Product Specifications

Is there anything that simply screams the 1970s' most indelible pop cultural clichés--the sunny romanticism, perfect vocal hooks, feathered hair, stacked heels, and flared sateen britches--more than the Swedish pop phenomenon Abba? And while many a pundit snootily dismissed them during their prime as some sort of prefabricated aberration, their worldwide popularity peaked somewhere just south of Beatlesmania. Indeed, Abba's music was as finely tooled and crafted as anything to come from a Volvo or IKEA factory--if occasionally more economically potent. This double-disc, 37-track anthology comes neatly on the heels of Mama Mia!, the smash, if unlikely, Broadway show based on the band's hits, and documents every single released by the band's Polar label in their home country as well as key tracks released internationally.

This is the canon from whence the term "Europop" sprang. With a continental sense of vocal neoclassicism, informed by just the right ethnic clichés (and oft wed to the era's insistent 4/4 disco beat) to make songs like "Mama Mia," "Fernando," "Chiquitita," and "Voulez-Vous" work on a global scale, the writing team of Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson and their respective partners in music and life, Agnetha Faltskog and Frida Lyngstad, developed the seamless, wall-of-sound productions contained herein. The Definitive Collection features a rare single remix of "Ring, Ring" and a 1979 promo-only extended mix of "Voulez-Vous" as bonus tracks, as well as a concise, illustrated history of the band and each track. --Jerry McCulley

[+] 10.0 I'm impressed with this music
When I first bought this CD I knew that I would be pleased, in which I was. Come to think of it, there were quite a few songs that became newly favorites of mine, such as "Honey, Honey", "Angel eyes", "Under Attack", and "Thank you for the music" are very good. I thought ABBA Gold was inspirational, but this CD is impressive.

From what I've learned the name of ABBA actually comes from the singers first initials themselves. As in the following:

Anni-Frid
Benny
Bjorn
Agnetha

I recommend this album and music group to anyone, especially to those who are seeking good and decent music.

[+] 10.0 wonderful collection
This really is the ABBA definitive collection, al the songs I remember from them are here, the quality of the sound is wonderful. I know that after releasing Mamma Mia some other collections are selling, but this one contains more than 30 songs, and it's great.

[+] 8.0 Very complete collection
While this is an excellent CD collection which even includes some rather unfamiliar tunes, I thought the DVD of the same title was by far superior. The DVD was GREAT, and I highly recommend it for any ABBA fan!

[+] 10.0 Amazing ABBA
This product was spottless. It had no scratches, no markes, no skips. It was just as brand new as if you would of bought it at the store. I was pleased.

[+] 8.0 Amazing Collection
When you get all the Gold & #1 ABBA songs in one collection the only thing that can beat it is a live concert from them. Amazing collection you should go for it.

[+] 10.0 Fun, Catchy, Splendid Songs in the best CD Format!
ABBA. The name conjures up nostalgic feelings of glittery, sequence-covered costumes, 70s dancing, and clean and catchy pop songs. Who created these genius songs? ABBA. Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andresson, Agnetha Faltskog, and Anni-Frid Lyngstand (they're Sewdish) made up this sensational band.

Most people love the songs. Some people don't. I do. You might not. [...]

But if you do, this is the CD for you. This CD contains 37 pure-gold songs, most of which aren't featured on the much hyped-up ABBA: GOLD CD, which only includes the songs from MAMMA MIA! and a few others. This is the best CD to get, and I completely agree with the reviewer who said: "If you get one ABBA CD, this is it".

This is a good buy.

[+] 10.0 Great music
After seeing Mama Mia it revived my interest in Abba music, which I had on LP's. I wanted the original music, not the movie soundtrack and this contains all the songs + many others with the wonderful voices of Abba. It's a great 2 CD set and a real bargain!

[+] 10.0 Abba Remixed! Why Not???
The collection listed here: Definitive Collection is very true to it's name. It starts off with their early work, and takes us on a musical journey through the 70's and 80's. The bonus to owning this collection is the fact that all the tracks are REMASTERED.

If you are a die-hard fan or just getting into the group (Mama Mia) movie watcher, you won't be disappointed with this collection at all! The sound is great, and the music is timeless. What could be better?

Well, what really needs to happen (NOW!) is for Bjourn and Benny to take this opportunity of popularity from Mama Mia and expand one more time their creative genius. WE WANT AN ORIGINAL ABBA REMIX!!!

This doesn't mean that they have to get back together and sing (although that would be a miracle) we just want an ABBA remix of their greatest hits using the original artists. There are too many Abba tributes, and remixes by people who sound nothing like Abba, and the instramental or piano versions also make us sick...

ABBA needs to stop putting out countless "collections" and give us something we can really dance to again, and with a little bass added! The A-Teens did a really nice job, and it is actually worth listening to, but if would be even better if the "sound/beat" of A-Teens were mixed with the real Abba voices, it would be a work of art. However, it needs to be done by the professionals. It really needs to be done by Bjorn and Benny... and there is no time like NOW!

Many artists have done remixes, it doesn't mean that Abba has to "re-invent" themselves at all, their music "as is" will be around for generations. WE JUST WANT TO DANCE!!!

If your wanting to dance to the real Abba too, then keep buging the music companys like I do, and let them know I am not the only voice here who wants to see less compilations, and a c.d. we can dance to!!!

[+] 10.0 Return to the 80's!
After seeing "Mamma Mia" on stage and in the movies, I began reminiscing about ABBA's music and how much I loved it. This album is everything I could have hoped for. A few songs I don't remember but most of them are wonderful. I listen to the album almost everyday. For anyone who loved listening and singing along with ABBA in the past, this is the album to buy. It's GREAT!

[+] 10.0 ABBA!!!!!!!! Classic Hits

Many of us are very familiar with ABBA's songs because we have heard them often over the years. Personally, I knew of them from a distance and never researched them until recently. Living in Germany placed me in the thick of the ABBA Fan Club as they are revered here in Europe. There are enough ABBA fans here to pack any venue where they would perform, believe that. Already familiar with tracks such as "Dancing Queen", "Take A Chance On Me" and "Mamma Mia", I can now associate ever so closely with their string of hits. As a DJ, it's imperative to have a worthy compilation such as this on hand at all times. Best believe if you are doing an old school set, an ABBA fan will reveal himself to you. More importantly, this music is nostalgic and full of great, feel good vibes. For that reason alone the Definitive Collection is worth having in your collection. Maybe you already do or maybe, like me, you already loved them and didn't even know it.

Enjoy

[+] 10.0 Fantastic
What can you say about Abba except that it's too bad they are not still recording. They were one of the best singing groups to hit the market. I bought this as part of a three-album purchase - can't get enough of them.

[+] 10.0 All the hits, but too many missing album tracks
While The Definitive Collection does have all of the hit singles, it is missing some very good album tracks like "Dance (While The Music Still Goes On)", "Hasta Mañana", "When I Kissed The Teacher", "Kisses Of Fire", and "Happy New Year". Why waste space on remixes of "Ring Ring" and "Voulez-Vous", when there's many more great ABBA tracks that could've been included?

[+] 8.0 I actually like this
I first got some interesed in them by seeing Pracilla Queen of the Desert and i like the songs i heard from them like Ferando, Dancing Queen, and Mama mia. But it took me years to get enough courage to buy a cd of theirs. They are so chessy and kind of embrasing to admit to liking. I deciede to get this over the single disk Abba Gold because it was a good price and i wanted to hear more songs besides the ones that everyone knows. I also have no desire to buy another ABBA cd. The first songs on here are not that great but they get better. People think of them as a disco act but they acutally did some folk, pop, new wave and some songs like The winner takes it All that are very Broadway. This is actually one of the better 2 cds best offs i have ever listen to. I say to the people like me that dont want to admit that they like this band to check this out. I read that this is suppose to come with liner notes but my new copy did not.

[+] 10.0 ABBA IS THE BEST!!!
La mejor recopilacion de uno de los mejores grupos de todos los tiempos, y todas las canciones ordenadas de forma cronologica, y un folleto donde se resume muy bien toda su historia, con muchas fotos de todas sus etapas de modo que uno puede ir siguiendo toda su trayectoria como grupo musical; las canciones, simplemente INCREIBLES, desde la sencilla "RING, RING" hasta canciones mas complicadas como "THE WINNER TAKES IT AT ALL"; sin faltar piezas inolvidables como "CHIQUITITA", "I DO I DO I DO", "WATERLOO", "DANCING QUEEN" y "TAKE A CHANCE ON ME"; incluso hay canciones que yo no conocia, como "HONEY HONEY", "ONE OF US" y "PEOPLE NEED LOVE", muy buenas tambien; SIMPLEMENTE LO MEJOR!!!

[+] 10.0 Mamma Mia Its Abba
I can recall this band when i was a child having alot of hits. Some of the songs i remember from those days were S.O.S. and Waterloo. My mum bought some of their albums and i just loved a heap of their songs.By the late 70's i started ignoring them as they got so much attention by the media. But i still liked alot of their tunes.Radio stations seemed to ignore this band alot in the 80's here. But i heard some of their songs and after so many years of not hearing them they sounded damn good,so i went and got a few albums. This was 1989 and i got right into them again.I always hoped this band would get back together, but the news is that they will not.Thats a shame, but there is so much music to reflect on.Every now and then i play their songs,Some of my favorites are the 2 i mentioned and Honey Honey,I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do ,Mamma Mia ,Fernando ,Ring Ring ,The Winner Takes It All ,Under Attack and Thank You For The Music. There is also a stack of other songs i like. This is a good collection of their songs.

[+] 8.0 Excellent Collection
If you were in Australia in 1977, then you were certainly subject to "Abbamania." Not since the arrival of the Beatles in 1964 had the Land Down Under scene such a phenomenon. It seemed like all of Sydney lined the streets to herald the arrival of the "Super Swedes." I was 12 years old at the time and I quickly fell under their spell, as did most of the nation's youth. Over the next couple of years they soon conquered the rest of the world, America to a much lesser extent, but the group eventually fell victim to over-exposure and by the early 80's it was clear that ABBA was to go down in history as a super group of the 1970's. It's interesting to me now, listening to this well-chosen collection of ABBA hits, to think that many of these songs have had a second-wind with the hit musical "Mamma Mia." Songs that didn't even originally make a splash in the U.S. are now being hummed across the country as a result of this worldwide stage smash. I love this particular collection. I think it will appeal to those of us who were ABBA devotees and those who are only now becoming familar with their evergreen material. The masterminds behind the songs, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Anderson, are only now being recognized as the great writers that they were/are, and the passage of time only serves as a reminder, at least to me, that once upon a time there used to be GREAT songs on the pop charts.

ABBA was a supergroup. Their music still lives on - I love this 2CD compilation - however it was a shame for the producers not to include 'Happy New Year' on this compilation!

[+] 10.0 ABBA DABBA DO
This is a very good collection of ABBA classics with wonderful mastering; and such a great bargain.

Abba were one of the big groups from the 1970's and with this collection you'll hear why. Now there were couple things I could have done without, the two remixes at the end of the second CD. There are a few great tunes missing that could have been included in their place, like "Our Last Summer" and "When I kissed the Teacher." Also, on disc one, I could have done without track four, "Love Isn't Easy," and replaced it with "Bang-A-Boomerang," but, the good news, all the essentials are here!

By the way, this reviewer also loves other styles of music as well, from the Hard Rock of Deep Purple, to the classical power of Beethoven, to the big band swing of Benny Goodman and Glenn Millers Orchestra. Good music is just good music.

Highly recommended.

[+] 10.0 Abba is Awesome!
I've never been a Huge Abba fan, but always liked 'mama mia', 'dancing queen', 'fernando'...and this cd collection has two cds chock full of songs that, while i don't know everyone of them, i really liked all of them! this is a great compilation album and i love it. I'm sure Abba has a huge fan base, to which i've never been a big part of but I always had a small yearning for their hits of the 70's and the movie Muriels' wedding peaked my interest even further.
I highly recommend this definitely definitive collection to anyone interested in any of their music. It shows a few different sides to their unique style of music.

[+] 10.0 Pure Pop Perfection
Say what you will about the decade that gave birth to ABBA. But anyone who cannot recognize the utter brilliance of these tracks is either a fool, a liar or just a musical snob afraid of what others think about what's in their cd changer.

[+] 10.0 They Don't Make Music Like This Anymore.....
It is a very obvious thing to see why ABBA has had so much success with their infectious pop songs. It's the melody that has been put into them along with great songwriting and two beautifullly voiced female singers. This collection covers the obvious hits of the band; including the disco smash "Dancing Queen", and the power pop of "SOS", "Waterloo", and "Mama Mia". Disc one contains the most memorable songs of ABBA, while disc two contains the Euro-disco beats of "Voulez Vous", "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme" and "Lay All Your Love On Me". It is easy to listen to these songs all the way through just because they are so good. The voices, the lyrics, and the music are just fantastic and utterly irresistable. ABBA has what most musicians today don't have; great melody.

OVERALL this is a fine and polished collection of a great band. A real treat for fans and lovers of 70s and early 80s pop/disco music.

[+] 10.0 For Those Not Yet Familiar With ABBA
It's hard to add anything new to what has already been written in other reviews, but I am approaching this CD as a new ABBA fan. I was in my thirties when ABBA was in their heyday during the 1970's, but wasn't much into music during this decade. However, with the release of "Mamma Mia" I had the chance to see the play twice in New York City and I became hooked on the music of ABBA. I play this CD repeatedly and just love the songs. If you are not familiar with ABBA give their songs a chance and I'm sure you will become addicted to their music just as I am. Their DVD's "ABBA-The Definitive Collection" and "Super Trouper" are equally rousing and sure to provide you with several hours of musical pleasure. Print out the lyrics from a web site and have a sing along with these very singable lyrics.

[+] 10.0 ABBA To Z!
This is one of the best career synopsis double CD collection ever put together. Needless to say I am an ABBA fan. They are quite the premier breakout group for the 1970's. They sure deserved the Eurovision Award for their hit single Waterloo. This double CD contains tracks that were popular all over the planet. It also contains some of their hits that never quite hit the US shores. Songs like Under Attack, & The Day Before You Came, really are the whipped topping of the Definitive Collection. ABBA is still my favorite group of all time. This is proof positive great things are Scandinavian. After all members hail from Norway, as well as Sweden. This is worth the money to sit back, and enjoy great memories of the late '70s, and early '80's. I was fortunate enough to see them in concert in Europe, and United States. The collection also contains some newsworthy backround as well. Wish they could reunite for a worldwide tour. Again, this is ABBA, A to Z!

[+] 10.0 Very Apt Album Title for Future Hall of Famers!
A victim of American ethnocentricism and stereotyping, the great genius of this Swedish band has never truly been realised in the U.S. even after all this while. Why this band isn't in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame as well as the Songwriter's Hall of Fame just beggars belief. Maybe with the Bee Gees recently getting the latter honour, things might change soon but it appears if you don't make music in the U.S. or England or are good-looking blondes, your music will never be taken seriously in the U.S.

Anyways, for those of us in the know, the greatness of Abba is captured in all its fullness here in this great 2-cd compilation. With very well remastered sound, the band has never sounded better too. The track selections are just great and if you've never heard the band before or have just become a fan after the musical but don't want to get all the albums, I guess this is just about the best alternative there is.

The tracks also have a very nice flow about them starting with "People Need Love" and ending very appropriately with "Thank You For the Music" unless you consider the two bonus tracks. After all these years of having grown up to their music, one thing this compilation makes clear is the truly great songwriting abilities of the group. If pop songs have ever come close to being works of art, much of the material in this cd must come close as working examples.

I hope that someday the band receives the just recognition it deserves for this great body of work. I forsee a lifetime achievement Grammy award....
