[+] 10.0 replacement battery
I purchased a replacement battery because I wanted on on hand. I haven't tried it yet as I still have no need. Thanks again.

[+] 4.0 Battery Problems
I love my Kindle and was looking forward to taking it with me out of town when unexpectedly as I was reading, the pages no longer turned and it just froze. I tried to charge it but it still would not function. Having had it only a couple of months, I couldn't understand what was wrong. Then I realized from reading the comments from other users that it was the battery. I hurried to order a new one but got a message that they were out of stock. This is really a let down. Surely they will not allow poor battery performance to undermine an otherwise very good product. I have no idea when I will receive the new battery they said they would send an e-mail when it is available.

The spare battery works as advertised. I didn't want a Kindle that could die because the one battery for it expired.

[+] 10.0 works fine for me
i received my kindle 1/08, read more than 2 hours a day consistently, & turn on the wireless function daily for a minute or so to download my NY times latest news blog & occasionally to look up a book. it was time to replace my battery by the end of 10/08. that seems reasonable to me.

[+] 6.0 Battery Life Less
Since I travel extensively with my Kindle, I thought I should have a replacement battery. Unfortunately, the replacement does not seem to have as much stamina as the original. I recharge my Kindle once a week, and have had it for 7 months, but I when I use the replacement battery, I have to recharge every 4 days. Disappointing.
The good news, however, is that the price is very good, so it won't break the bank to replace it often if needed.

[+] 10.0 Battery
I bought a second battery for my Kindle just in case something should happen to my original. I had heard people were having problems with the original battery dying after a few months, so I wanted to be prepared because I'm pretty attached to my Kindle. Plus, it is nice to have in case something keeps me from being able to charge the original battery (e.g. a power outage). This battery charged up quickly and I used it in the Kindle for 2 weeks to make sure it worked.

[+] 10.0 Batteries will be Batteries!
As with any battery, they must be used and rotated to stay healthy. If you do not use or rotate your spare, it will die prematurely. Batteries seem to charge better and develop a longer use time by draining them down to near 0 and then recharging fully. "Do not store a discharged battery for an extended period of time, death (of the battery) is the result!

Enjoy your Kindle and happy reading...

As long as it works I am happy. Haven't had to use the replacement yet.

[+] 2.0 less than hoped
Kindle Replacement Battery - Less than I had hoped for in that it was very difficult to take the old battery out and even less than that was the service I received when I contacted Kindle for help. The service dept was less than gracious and not helpful.

The Battery itself, fine.

[+] 4.0 Replacement worked - but for how long?
The original Kindle battery I had lasted at full capacity for maybe 3 months. By 6 months, it was completely unusable. What's more, the battery casing itself was bulging out so that the back of Kindle couldn't even fit... which made me worry about leaks and things inside the battery.
This replacement battery made an instant difference, all of a sudden the Kindle lasts the proper amount of time on a charge. But I won't trust it to work for too long. Luckily these batteries are cheap.

[+] 8.0 keep a spare on hand
I got this for a spare on hand. I have not yet to replace my original. It says in the instructions when I got my Kindle that to give the battery a long life, NOT to let the battery drain out before recharging. It is better to recharge frequently. When I see my battery at the half way mark, that is when I recharged it back up. Also, when you use the wireless service, it does drain out your battery faster so if you are reading, SHUT THE WIRELESS switch off as you don't need it on and you are just wasting your battery. I don't have any problem with my battery as the previous reviewers do but I wanted a spare on hand so I can replace it right away and not interrupt my reading.

[+] 10.0 Kindle Battery
My oringinal battery lasted 9 months and I use my kindle daily in Alaska without whispernet. I'm not sure if it would have lasted longer or not with whispernet. I am very happy with my kindle and will keep a new battery available just in case this one doesn't last as long.

[+] 6.0 Kindle backup battery
I have had my Kindle for a couple of months and wouldn't part with it. The battery is another matter. I wish the Chinese and Japanese manufacturers would settle on a battery standard and that the batteries would be easy to remove and insert.

While it is not brain surgery, having to take the Kindle out of its folder (especially since I have Velcro'd it in so it wouldn't fall out), remove the back, pry the battery out of its nest and unplug it and then having to do the same steps in reverse to install the backup is a royal pain in the neck. The Kindle battery holds an adequate charge for everything except a long airplane trip and if you aren't lucky enough to have a power supply at your seat, you must have a backup battery.

Why do so many engineers design beautiful products and then run out of brain power when it comes to batteries?

So far the replacement battery works fine and it is reasonably priced but I gave it a 3 star rating for the above reasons.

[+] 10.0 Nice to have a spare battery for my Kindle
I was having problems with short battery life on my Kindle, so I ordered a spare. The spare appears to better than the original battery. So I always have one battery in the Kindle, and a spare to carry along in case the first battery runs out of juice.

[+] 2.0 h
i am completely unhappy with this product. i bought the battery because i was going overseas and wanted it as a spare in case i had voltage/electricity issues so wanted to charge it before i left. $20 seemed a small price to pay for the insurance of knowing i would always have a book to read while i was away-i was going to a lesser developed country. i got the battery and could not figure out how to get the old battery out. it seemed obvious until i tried to actually take it out. i looked in the user mannual-no help. called the Kindle 800# and the guy who answered admitted he had no idea how to get it out. he couldn't find instructions either. to his credit, he went to find a kindle to see the issue for himself. after several attempts, he couldn' get it out either. to get the current one out it quickly became clear that you would destroy the battery in the process. he had to agree it was a poor design and he couldn't get his out. he promised to let the knidle people know this was a problem so i would advise that unless you are ready to destroy the one you are taking out, don't buy this as a spare. as much as i love the kindle and i do, is as much as i hate this battery housing design

I now manage my Kindle battery better than initially and am experiencing better longevity than with the original as a result.

I use its internet only whenever downloading subscriptions or books and I turn the device off completely whenever it is not in use.

[+] 8.0 Battery Life
I do not own a Kindle but I want one. I wont buy one until the issue with the battery is taken care of. I have read the reviews and when I'm spending over 300.00 bucks on an item I do not expect to be inconvienced and then have to pay for it (you have to be kidding me you're ok buying a battery just because it costs 20.00 bucks? it shouldnt cost you anything). I want to thank everyone who wrote about the battery issue. I was going to get one of these for my dad (and myself) who is 75 for his birthday but he is not going to know what to do if the battery fails. I will rekindle my desire when The Kindle is ready to accomodate me.

I have not used the spare replacement battery I purchased with my kindle,
but having it on hand for that day when I will need it eliminates any
concern that an interruption in the use of the kindle is going to happen.

[+] 2.0 Need a Better Kindle Battery!
I love my Kindle, but the battery is pathetic and lasted only 4 months! After paying $400 for the Kindle and $9.99 for each book, who wants to pay $20 two or three times a year? Very disappointed!

[+] 4.0 The Kindle Battery
First and foremost, Kindle is an exceptional product. That being said, the battery provided for it, is not. After less than three months of moderate use, the battery that came with the Kindle went from working great to flat dead. I would definitely recommend that you buy at least one extra battery to have around just in case you find yourself inconvenienced by this poor product. Fortunately for us, the pricing on this battery is fairly low. Hopefully, the manufacturer is looking into this and will be providing better batteries down the road. {ssintrepid}

[+] 8.0 Don't leave home without it
I travel a lot (20 days a month or more) and always travel with my Kindle. Even though the Kindle's battery will last for several days, it seems to run out at the worst of times (like on a 4 hour plane ride). I carry the charger with me but this extra battery has helped me out more than once. I am giving it four stars due to the fact that it doesn't just slide or snap in, like most batteries do now. Still, I highly recommend it for anyone who owns a Kindle.

[+] 10.0 excellent-easy to install!
THE KINDLE BATTERY WAS SHIPPED VERY QUICKLY AND WAS SUPER EASY TO INSTALL!
GREAT TO HAVE A BACK UP ON HAND! I'D LIKE TO BE ABLE TO CHARGE THE BATTERY DIRECTLY WITHOUT PLACING IT IN THE KINDLE ITSELF...IS ANYONE AWARE OF A CHARGER I COULD BUY WHICH WOULD ALLOW THIS?

[+] 2.0 Short Battery Life
I don't consider having a swappable battery a feature - as much as a common sense engineering decision. I can understand to some small extent why the iPod doesn't - as they are shooting for extreme size reduction. However even in their case - it was a mistake.

The issue with the Kindle battery is that they die too fast - I'm getting 3-4 months before the battery fails to hold a charge - I just ordered two more because my last one after charging all night held the charge for almost 15 minutes - not useful.

I suspect this is either very poor quality control in the Chinese made battery or a design flaw in the charging circuit. In any case Amazon really needs to look into this.

[+] 2.0 Most annoying feature
I bought a replacement battery and it may prove useful BUT a longer lived battery is badly needed. When I connect to download, I can see the charge decreasing while I wait! Otherwise, in the course of ordinary reading I don't get much more than 4 hours (estimated) . The replacemant battery performs the same way. A longer cord on the charger would be helpful.

[+] 10.0 C'mon; it's cheaper than a watch battery!
Imagine my chagrin when I went to read a book on my Kindle and it was dead. I was SO sure that this was another product which had failed the test of time. Imagine my relief when my spare battery promptly fixed the problem and it cost me under $20. There is no fee for the whispernet; no continuing fees at all for the Kindle. (Hey, Amazon folks, if you are listening that is a compliment- not an invitation to think up some fees ). As well, it DOES have a replaceable battery. I am buying two more and thanking Amazon for making it possible to simply change a battery and read ON..................

I have not used my extra battery but just wanted one on hand in case and when it was needed. At $19.99, I felt I could afford to have a spare on hand. I just could not go back to the time before Kindle. I will always keep a spare battery but have had my Kindle 6 months and have not needed it yet. My Kindle has opened up a whole new world for me.

[+] 2.0 Keep a spare one handy
I was only able to read one Stephen King book (Duma Key - big book). I started to read another book and never got past the 3rd chapter. This Kindle is such a great machine, why can't it handle the simplest expectation - a battery with a longer life.

[+] 2.0 what's with the battery?
I've had my kindle less than a month and the battery won't recharge. Now I see I can't get another one for a while. What is wrong with you people? Didn't anyone ever tell you the product has to work for more than a few days before the battery fails? If you can't get me a replacement battery, and the battery has such a crappy life, what use is the Kindle to me? Seriously guys.

[+] 2.0 Is something wrong with the charging circuit?
I have a ton of products with Lithium Ion batteries, but I don't think I've ever seen one die quite this fast. 3 months, and maybe 20-25 recharge cycles and I'm down to an hour or less of battery life.

[+] 4.0 Out of stock?
I note this item is now out of stock. What planning. I hope it's not going to be a many-month wait as it was for the Kindle itself. Maybe we Kindle purchasers should conserve battery power by shutting off the wireless connection on the back and not buying any new books until Amazon finds a battery supply. Pass the word. It would have been more convenient for customers if the company had designed this thing to use a battery that's available -- or in this case not available -- from more than one source.

[+] 4.0 Short lived battery for an expensive Kindle!
It was only two months before my battery would not hold a charge for more than a day. I would charge the battery and then when I went to turn it on later in the day, it would show only about one third full, then last only an hour. Very frustrating! This device was too expensive to have such a basic problem like this. When buying the Kindle, you must buy a backup battery! The reader is awesome--the battery--not so much.

I love my Kindle and use it almost every day. However, after 3 months, my battery just died. I expected it to last longer. Luckily I had a spare. I was reading and the text froze. None of the buttons worked. When I turned off the device the page I was reading stayed on. It did not go away until I took out the old battery. I love my kindle but it looks like I need to have spares all the time.

[+] 8.0 Thee Kindle Battery
Here is thee Kindle battery. Original battery that comes with the Kindle. You can't go wrong with ordering an original. It's not a knock-off.

Personally I purchased three extra batteries. Say for a long flight, power outage, etc.

I've read other reviews, and my Kindle battery last just as long as it has back in December. It does go faster when I'm on the 1x side rather than the sprint speedy side where it lasts longer here.

[+] 6.0 Not really plug n play
I was excited that someone thought ahead and provided for a battery swap. Problem it is not exactly just pop out and pop in like many cell phone batteries are designed. This requires pulling on some cables that are fragile to unplug it. Sort of like the older home phones. It should have had the contacts hardwired so it was a quick swap.

I guess they really designed this just for one the old battery dies, you can replace it without sending it back to the factory.

I guess the next version of the Kindle will be better:)

[+] 2.0 I think the batteries might have issues
My battery is dead after only 3 months as well. Based on the comments I have read others are having the same issue. Is Amazon looking into this? Are they going to make good on the replacement batteries for customers who have this problem? It's a shame, the device is great. I hope they don't let this issue overshadow the device's good points. Take a lesson from Apple when the iPod had battery issues when it first came out. FIX IT!

I ordered the Kindle six weeks ago and just received the Kindle unit. I ordered the battery as a back-up just in case at the same time. I am glad I ordered the back-up battery when I did...it takes a month or two to receive these items and you don't want to be stranded without a battery. I still have not received the back-up battery, but the unit is working fine with the original for now. But you never know....
