[+] 2.0 book cover
I returned this book cover because it was totally inadequate-the kindle just DOES NOT stay attached securely. Unfortunately, they charged me a restocking fee which I feel was unjust since the product did not do what it was supposed to (i.e. hold the kindle securely)

[+] 8.0 Happy Kindle Owner
I bought this replacement cover because I just plain wore out the original. I have looked at the M-Edge & other covers, and they just look like they will make my Kindle more bulky. The cost of the other covers compared to the replacement cover was not the issue. I like the size & weight of the original cover. I added 2 velcro dots on the original, and have done the same thing with the replacement cover as well.(One in the upper left corner & one in the lower right corner & they hold my kindle securely. Additionally, I find that the plastic "catch" tab in the cover does nothing to secure the Kindle to the cover.

[+] 4.0 Great idea BUT.....
The cover is a great idea --- security for the device and planned ease of management of the book when reading. BUT, the little clip inside the cover is not big enough to hold the Kindle in place. It takes the slightest joggling of the device to unseat it from the cover and basically makes it more of a danger than a help. Surely either Kindle can come up with a better notch on the back cover or come up with a more secure fastening into the cover. I LOVE my Kindle. Due to the ability to use large print on the screen, I have read more lately than I have in years. Fix the cover problem and it's a near-perfect device!

[+] 4.0 What were they thinking?
I got to put my 2 cents in on this lousy cover. Sure it's well constructed but it' performs so poorly that it is obvious to me that it was and after thought. This cover is a huge disappointment and it has driven me crazy from the first time I tried to use it. It sits slightly crooked when engaged and I feel compelled to try to straighten it out every time I look at it. And I guess they never supposed that you may need to get to the on/off switch or whispernet switch when the device is installed in the cover. Plus, isn't the speaker in the back too...also, covered up. Sure you can slip your finger in there after memorizing which switch is which, but then the puny little locking thingy clicks off and it's free in your hands. So stupid! I've come to the conclusion that the only good use for the cover is for storage when not using the device. I just take the thing out when I want to start reading. Weight? Too heavy at 5.9 oz making the device a full pound when equipped with the cover. The strap is as tight as a rabbit snare practically squishing the little scroll wheel down to its max. I'm afraid it's going to damage it by keeping it depressed all the time. Take my advice Amazon, try again, this cover blows.

[+] 10.0 Reread the instruction manual
Iam shocked that so many kindle owners have problems with this book cover.I do have to admit I had problems at first but then went back and read the instruction manual. It clearly states to insert the two left sided corners of the kindle into the book cover and push all the way in and then lightly press the two right sided corners of the kindle down. This will lock the Kindle into the cover securely.Just to double check to see if the Kindle is locked I push on the left side ever so slightly to see if it is lose and it never is.I have only had my Kindle for about a month so I cant say if this cover holds up to normal usage fairly, but it can be replaced.Although I do think twenty five dollars is a bit high for a faux leather cover.

[+] 6.0 Forget the plastic tab
Don't concern yourself with the plastic tab. And certainly forget all about velcro. Just place the K into the cover as seems intuitive, and then slip the attached elastic band down around the lower right corner. Voila, secure.
Reviewer [A1Q5ITF9ESYV19] | Date [November 15, 2008]
[+] 2.0 Sadly disappointed in this beta test cover
What were they thinking when the designers created the "corner pockets" to hold the K into place in the cover? Moreover, the plastic "clip" onto which the K is supposed to sit is so totally mis-engineered that it is funny. Watching the K fall onto my lap/bed/floor has become an adventure.

Woe is us who have suffered through this book cover experiment. I only hope that Amazon will compensate us with a new cover/kindle when the engineering department admits that it made a mistake and decides to market the K with a newly generated design and cover.

Is there is anyone out there who can effectively turn on the rear mounted on/off switch without "dislodging" the K from it's cover?????

Oh yes, the leather has a nice feel and the elastic strap does keep the K tucked away safely when not in use.

[+] 6.0 It needs to secure better
I love the size, it looks like a quality product, I like the strap. I like how the cover wraps around like the cover of a book.
What I do not like is that the Kindle will not stay in the cover and it's so frustrating. I have read that some people use velcro which is what I will have to do.

[+] 2.0 lousy customer service
Based on the recommendation of a couple of friends whose opinions I valued I purchased a Kindle particularly for a planned trip to Europe. The biggest draw for me was not having to carry 40 pounds of books with me. On the flight to New York the lady in the window seat asked to be allowed to go to the bathroom. I, of course, gallantly arose and as I did so my new Kindle slide out of the Amazon provided case (as nothing fastens the Kindle to the case) and it fell about 18 inches to the aisle. Upon retreiving my beloved Kindle I found it inoperable and nonfunctional. Fortunately I was able to buy 40 pounds of books at JFK and went on to Europe. Upon my return this week I called the so called Customer Service number and was told that the product warranty did not cover my Kindle but that Amazon out of pure generosity would sell me a remanufactured product for only $180.00. I was incredulous. A poorly designed case and a poorly designed product that cannot withstand modest jarring will not be repaired or replaced by the manufacturer? This is probably the worst customer service policy I have ever experienced and I plan to tell everyone I know and can reach on the internet what a crummy product and lousy service policy Amazon his foisted on the public. I'm done buying books from them too. Larry Luke (lukeatlaw@gmail.com if anyone woudl like to share a similar story)

[+] 2.0 Kindle Cover Sucks
Listen I love my overpriced Kindle, but I am ticked off EVERYTIME I use it when I see the junk that Amazon threw on at the last minute on the Kindle and call it a cover. It is flimsy, it does not stand up to average use of Kindle - which in my case is not even every day but rather several times a week. I have had my Kindle for a few months and the flimsy cardboard bracket for the cover has broken. Honestly Amazon the cover makes me feel like you were just out for the money for the Kindle and as an afterthought or to cut cost you figured okay we'll cut cost with the cover. I really am ticked off about this because I feel like the cover alone takes away a sense of value for the money. Amazon needs to offer a better quality cover to all current Kindle owners without incurring any additional cost because when it comes to the Kindle cover, what we got for the money is a bunch of junk!DO NOT PAY MONEY FOR THIS PIECE OF JUNK IT NEEDS TO BE GIVEN TO YOU FOR FREE!!!

[+] 2.0 Extraordinarily Poor Cover Design
I just got my Kindle and, like most folks, love it! But the cover is poorly designed... remarkably so, as it is intended to hold and protect such a sophisticated, expensive device. There is a flat, 1.25" plastic tab inside the right-hand side of the cover that is designed to fit into a niche on the battery cover (located on the back of the Kindle). However, the niche is only a shallow indentation and there is no "catch" or "locking" mechanism that fastens the Kindle to the plastic tab. The niche itself could have easily been designed with a v-shaped indention that would grab the edge of the plastic tab, but that is not the case. The Kindle easily falls out of the cover.

Inside the spine of the book cover are two corners that fit over the left-hand corners (upper and lower) of the Kindle. They fit around the Kindle nicely, but do nothing to hold the device in place.

My solution was to use a small piece of adhesive Velcro on the back of the Kindle. I placed the Velcro on the white plastic upper back portion of the Kindle - not on the battery cover as the stress of holding the device in place will pull the battery cover off. I wait to see if I will regret putting an adhesive material on my Kindle or on the suede interior of the book cover. I find it extraordinary that this cover was so poorly designed that a user is forced to "rig" it or risk having the Kindle fall out and possibly break.

On the positive side, there is a nicely padded portion in the inner left-hand side of the cover that cushions the screen well. When the left-hand side of the book cover is folded back and secured with the elastic strap, a small ledge forms on the left-hand side that makes a decent hand-hold when reading the Kindle.

All in all, just a small adjustment in design would have made for a much more effective book cover, even using the exact same materials. If I had purchased this cover separately, I would return it immediately. I agree with the reviewer who said that Amazon should feel obligated to redesign the book cover and replace the defective design at no charge to all purchasers.

[+] 2.0 Kindle Cover
The cover that comes with the Kindle is dreadful. I had problems with the Kindle falling out of the cover. Sometimes it was so difficult to hold that it would cause distractions while reading. I replaced the cover with a much better one and I no longer have a problem.

[+] 2.0 Worthless piece of junk!
This book cover is pathetic by design.

OK, I am not a "moron" as one owner called another.

I can get the thing clipped into place.

The problem is keeping it in its place.

If you don't sit in just the proper style the thing comes out of its case.

I also tore the back cover of my Kindle off trying to get it back into its place.

For $25, why should I have to go out and purchase Velcro to justify Amazon's poor design?

This holder is a recipe for disaster and ruining your Kindle.

The elastic strap used for closing the Kindle is destined to wear down and break at some point.

It is not leather, which does not bother me in the least.

It is the shoddy design of this case.

Amazon should be ashamed to sell or even include this junk in conjunction for the Kindle.

Surely, the expensive price of the Kindle merits a quality case.

[+] 4.0 Cover falling off
I bought the Kindle for my wife as a wedding present because she loves to read. We are both very pleased with the product (not so much with the experimental internet browser, but that's not what I bought it for, so I wasn't expecting too much out of it...actually, it froze the first time she tried to use it and so we just avoid using it at all) but not so much with the cover. She's not having the problem everyone else is complaining of...If you bend the plastic tab a little, it holds the Kindle perfectly. The problem she is having is that it constantly making the back cover (where the SD card and battery are, not the back cover to the case) come off when she opens the Kindle cover or closes it. She doesn't have a problem when she is reading usually, but the back cover to the Kindle is constantly coming off. So the little tab is causing her a different kind of problem that you should also think about before buying this case. I would say just store it in the case and take the Kindle out to read. We love the Kindle, but they should have put more time into designing a much better case for it.

[+] 8.0 Good cover
The kindle cover is a fine cover and worthy of far better reviews than most are giving it. It works as prescribed for me and I have needed no tricks like velcro, etc. My kindle is secure and has never fallen out. The back cover also has never been caused to come off from this cover. After about two weeks of use it actually got better and better as it sort of melded to my kindle. I love it. The design could be improved upon yes, but I hear there are flaws with those other, more expensive covers as well.

[+] 10.0 I like the original cover
I like the original cover. It has held the Kindle in place when I am reading. I fold it back upon itself, and it works just fine, I can hold it either with my right or my left hand by the folded back cover. Honestly, don't know why some many people are bawling about this cover. I have been reading this eBook everyday for the last ten months and the cover that came with it is really okay. If you leave it on and use it like it's meant to be used, then it will stretch and shift to look even more like a real book cover. The funny shape that the devise looks like, well, it was designed to look like that to resemble a book..............funny coincidence! NOT!!!!!!! This was deliberate. I love Gabrielle, my Kindle, and hope to someday get a lovely cover from that wonderful man Strangedog, But damn, he is always sold out!!!!!! But I still love my original cover. And the elastic goes over my forearm to hold it close to me when I go places with the GrandKids. That is a feature that Amazon did not bargain for, I guarantee it...and I have looked at the stitching, I can fix it up if it breaks down. Thank all of you for loving the Kindle so much. It's worth it........

[+] 2.0 Not worthy of the kindle
This cover is simply not worthy of the kindle. The kindle is a wonderful, almost magical device. This cover is worthless. I fiddled with it, I read all the advice on modifying it with velcro and the like so that it actually performed the intended function. I gave up. I bought a cover that is wonderful. It is the cover that should have come with the Kindle, if Amazon hadn't been so cheap. The m-edge cover is superior in every way. Don't waste your money.

[+] 8.0 Two pieces of small velcro
I didn't like how easy this could pop out but it does appear to protect the screen better than most of the cases on the market (why is that?). I do like how you can fold the cover back so I figured I would do something to fix this.

So I put on two small pieces of velcro on the right hand side and that solved my problems. That was it.

[+] 8.0 Serves its purpose
I like my cover. It feels suspiciously like butter leather despite the fact that it is faux. It feels steady and protects my kindle well. It's not exactly pretty so if you're looking for a fashion statement try a 3rd party.

I don't worry about my kindle falling out, the tab keeps it secure unless I tilt it too far forward in bed, then it will unhook and jump out at me. However, as I typically hold it in my right and my hand keeps the kindle in place.

Now the not so good. The inside of the cover is a touch tacky (as in sticky) on the spine and over the padding. No idea why, but it isn't bothersome enough to me to see about switching it out. And if you hold the kindle in cover tilting too far forward it will fall out. A touch of velcro would fix that, but again, it's not a problem for me.

[+] 10.0 Arts and Crafts Cover
I am a contractor that loves to read. I build and install things and am not tech-savy, but I love my Kindle. It seems ironic that a high tech giant like Amazon is tripped up by a simple cover. I have read the reviews of the cover and share the experience. I am reminded of 5th grade arts and crafts class, "Now kids today we are going to upgrade a cover, don't spill the glue, be carefull with those sissors". If I was to leave my clients projects in this condition or quality ie: The $400.00 product is troubled by a $10.00 part, I would not be in business very long.

The replacement book cover (the first had flaws) is very adequate for my Kindle. Does it yet reach the level of what I expect Amazon to offer? [+] 4.0 KIndle Book Cover
There are better options than this book cover. If you do not "hook" the Kindle into the cover its going to slip out. When you do get it "hooked" in, trying to reach the on/off switch will unhook it. When you do want to take it out when its "hooked" in the back cover comes off also. Its better than nothing, but if your buying it, go for the more expensive types with the 4 corner tabs to hold the Kindle in place.

[+] 8.0 Kindle cover works perfectly with one small modification. (velcro in lower corner)
I agree with the comment that the kindle cover is very mis-understood.

If you fold the cover all the way back and then secure the elastic strap around the front cover you can ealily slip 3 or 4 fingers of the right hand into the gap between the front and back cover.

The elastic holds the book to your fingers, so you need to exert almost no force to 'hold' the kindle. This way, the elastic is squeezing your fingers between the covers to support the book so you do not need to exert any thumb pressure to hold the kindle. This leaves your thumb free to use the Next Page, Back and thumb-wheel controls.

I find that this is a very relaxed and comfortable way to hold the book and at this point I have hundreds of reading hours logged on the Kindle.

With the kindle in the case, there is very little chance of an accidental next/prev page click.

However, you really should add a piece of velcro to the back of the kindle in the bottom right corner (behined the font-size button). A small dot of press-and-stick velcro is sufficient.

This leaves the top right corner free so you can reach in and turn the radio on/off for air travel and battery conservation.

The velcro is essential. Without it, the Kindle can slip out of the case and get damaged - particularly if you have left the case open and you are not holding it. (e.g. I fell asleep on a long flight and after failing to close the case, the Kindle slipped out during turbulence.)

[+] 10.0 I'm hooked
the learning curve o reading with Kindle is short and easy. Once you have learned it the operation is easy as well.
I really appreciate the feature allowing larger text size.
I used it on a trip including several long plane trips. So much better then packing books in the carry on bag.
My only problem has been that the device freezes from time to time and needs to be re-set.
Great product!

[+] 6.0 Works but Could be Better
I've had my Kindle nine months now and thought I would give my quick impressions.
Pro's: I like the look and feel. I've had no problem with the cover's durability.
Problems: Like the Kindle, I got used the the cover over time and have had few problems. A problem rarely mentioned is what happens when other people want to hold your Kindle (a common event). You have to tell them to be careful or handle it a certain way for fear it will fall out and get damaged.
Second I don't have as much problem with the Kindle falling out as much as the back battery cover getting pulled off. You have to be very careful when lifting the Kindle out or reaching behind for the switches. It's not unusual to end up with three pieces in your hand - cover, Kindle, and batter cover.
All said and done the cover works ok but I'll probably try one of the new covers on the market when I have $50 to burn. Seems a bit unncessary.
As for the device itself? I love it.

[+] 8.0 Kindle Book Cover
The Kindle Cover is very sturdy and gives the Kindle a firm protection if you were to drop it. I am glad it is not leather because I am vegan vegetarian and do not use leather products. I would put this in a zip lock bag to protect it from rain, moist conditions etc because the cover does not give this protection or a microfab bag that would fit cover with Kindle in it. You can also use the cover's elastic to keep the Kindle securely attached while reading. This has to be placed on the right side and positioned accurately but it will hold. You will be able to use all the buttons.

[+] 2.0 Not an engineering marvel
I took me less than 24 hours to order a M-Edge leather cover. This cover is definitely not leather. Look at the Amazon Technical Details "Black cover with gray interior". Trust me, if it was leather, amazon would be touting that fact.

Here is why I paid $59 for the other after market cover:

1. My $359 kindle deserves protection and a classy case.
2. Elastic closure is clumsy and poorly designed. Depresses the click wheel.
2. Slips out of the cover too easily for my comfort. I fiddled with the grey plastic clip thing and got it to work better, but at its best it is not secure. I also had the rubber cover detach from the kindle.
3. Needs a place to keep a pen.
4. Needs a place to keep a paper clip or straight pin to perform a reset when on the road.
5. Overall looks cheap.

The difference between the original cover and the aftermarket cover is unbelievable. Anyone who thinks the original cover is so great should take a look at the other options available. The original cover is better than nothing, but not by much.

[+] 10.0 Works perfect if you know how to use it!
First things first..the cover works flawlessly to hold the Kindle in place. There is a small gray tab on the inside flap which SNAPS onto the groove on the back of the Kindle. You have to insert the Kindle at a slight angle, and then push it to the left with the tiniest of force and it will snap onto and off the Kindle in a split second. You do not need much force to snap the kindle in place as the proper angle will snap it in place instantly. Once the tab is connected to the Kindle, the Kindle will be held in its place no matter how much you try to shake it. it does NOT fall out when PROPERLY placed in the cover.

You might need to lift the tab up slightly if you haven't been able to get it into place as it probabaly came flattened all the way down when it was shipped to you.

The Kindle does not use much power when it is on, and only consumes power when flipping pages. You do NOT need to turn the Kindle off. There is no burn in, and you can leave it on for days without charging it if you are not using it. The adapter plug fits in the Kindle on the bottom so you can leave it on, and have it charged while in the cover.

Before you get frustrated with the Kindle cover, take the battery cover off the Kindle, and learn how to snap it onto the gray tab. Without the kindle inside, you can get a better look at how it works. Once you get it right, you will laugh at how brilliant the cover works and laugh about all the bad things you said about the cover.

[+] 2.0 Very Disapointed
I agree with what all the negative reviews say. I love my kindle, hate the cover.

Overall: You'd be nuts to spend money on this cover but for the price (included with the kindle) how much can I complain... oh look quite a lot ;-)

Negatives:
1. If you are trying to read the kindle falls out of the cover
2. To turn the kindle on and off you have to take it out of the case
3. The small corners don't seem to fit the kindle correctly
4. The quality of the materials is poor... feels very cheap to hold a $400 product.

Positives:
1. When not reading the kindle, it's not bad.
2. Once closed the kindle does feel protected.
3. The elastic band, though cheap looking, does stay nice and tight.

Hopefully someone will come out with something much nicer that this in the future.

[+] 10.0 It's not rocket science!
I am amazed at some of the reviews. I use my Kindle with the cover 89.9% (yes exactly) of the time. 100% of the time I am using the Kindle with the cover, it stays perfectly snug in the cover and has never once fallen out even if I hold on the left side of the cover and let the Kindle dangle in the air. It's not rocket science, but it's pretty ingenius I say. And you do not have to "dislodge" the Kindle to reach the switches as someone said. You just reach your finger back there and flip them on or off.

I cannot understand the confusion people are having, or the bad reviews flying around. Perhaps Amazon should create an informational video entitled "Using the Kindle Cover for Dummies".

[+] 4.0 Kindle book cover - nothing special
I love my Kindle, but I'm not in love with the cover. Yes it protects the Kindle, but I wish they could design a more effective way of securing the 'K' than just that little flap inside the back cover. Every time lift the 'K' to switch it on, the flap disengages - most annoying.
The Kindle is a wonderful device and deserves a better designed cover; one the reflects the innovation and creativity that went into its design and development.

[+] 10.0 quality leather!
Great and easy to use. Soft, quality leather! Had it over a month now and no problems with the strap. Just don't use it like a regular bookcover. I only use it to store and protect my kindle. The kindle's much easier to read and hold without the cover.

[+] 10.0 Very functional cover!
I feel the cover works just fine when used properly with the kindle. It makes holding the kindle a lot easier and gives you the feeling you are holding a book. It also works great to clip a booklight onto it for night reading. I love it but would like it in different colors like pink, blue, green, etc.

[+] 6.0 A servicable device
I use this cover more than I don't. On the positive side, It helps give the Kindle a "book" feel and it definitely keeps the device more secure than it would be if it wasn't there. Also, the Kindle fits securely in there and stays in place.
The negatives are that the only way I can figure out to get the strap in a secure place is to cover up the last two columns of buttons on the right side as you face the device.
I think A better solution would be to create such an item that uses velcro and holds in by the back of the Kindle to the cover.
Either way, I'm mostly happy with this purchase.

[+] 8.0 Problem solved.
First off, the Kindle is meant to be used with the cover on so you can hold it like a book and not accidentally press the page forward bars. It is very well made and will work perfectly if you do one simple thing... just slide the elastic strap off the top cover when it is in the closed position, and when you are ready read... place it over the right side of the kindle, covering both right side corners and the next page and back bar. The elastic band will not exert enough pressure to depress the page bars, but WILL ABSOLUTELY hold the kindle in securely enough where you could even hold it upside down if you wanted to. To advance to the next page, or access the back function, simply press on top of the elastic band (the back button is exactly adjacent to the scroll wheel.) This solution to the kindle sliding out will work without any other alteration, and once you do this you think that it was meant to be used that way all along. Enjoy.

[+] 4.0 Kindle Book Cover
It's not a very good concept because I find that many times the Kindle slips out of the cover. It is not a secure fit. For $25.00 should come up with a better concept.

Thanks,
