a great small laptop
I had this netbook for nearly 5 months now. it is very fast and portable. the main disadvantages are that the key board is very small in a way you will hardly get adapted to it. it is very difficult or nearly impossible to download windows xp on it once it is not preloaded ( it tried with five copies of windows until now and failed). the battery only lasts 2 hours when you have the wifi on. I had no difficulty on connecting to any network. it connects to all printers with no difficulty. it switches on and off very fast. I recommend it to anybody who moves a lot as it is very portable.

This computer has made my life sooooo much easier
I bought this computer about a month-and-a-half ago and I think it is one of the best purchases I have ever made. I bought it because (a) my kids have started using our computers and I wanted an extra laptop and (b) I wanted a computer that I could take on the Metro (DC Subway) with me, so I could work on my way to work.
My kids are really happy with the computer and it has turned out to be so much better than I imagined. It's really portable and easy to use, so now I can work anywhere! This is great for me because I waste a lot of time commuting, I work a lot of hours, and I work out every day too.
It is incredibly light. I can actually work holding it in one hand and work out on a stationary bike at the same time.
It's also really durable. I put it its sleeve in my backpack every morning and ride my bike to the metro (the DC subway). It doesn't weigh me down at all and--despite the heavy bike lock in my backpack-- the computer doesn't look the slightest bit worn. I have another laptop, but it has been impossible for me to take on my bike and I don't like to take it in a laptop bag because it is really heavy and I am afraid it will break.
I haven't really noticed that the Eee is any slower than any of my other computers either (I also have a desktop Mac) and I have not run out of storage space on the hard drive. I have the 4G version. You can also use sd cards, like you would use in a digital camera or a cell phone, to increase the computer's storage capacity.
Using Linux is also a lot easier than I thought. I actually installed Linux on both of my other computers shortly after I got the Eee. There is definitely some software you can't get on Linux, but the flexibility that Linux has as an open source operating system makes it work giving up a little Windows software. If there is a Windows app you can't give up, then there is an application, Wine, that will play a lot of Windows programs on a Linux system. You can check out the Wine homepage to find out if a Windows app will work on Wine: www.winehq.org.
I don't currently have the Eee version of Linux on my computer. I installed Linux Mint because it is easier to modify and add new software to. If you want to install another operating system on the Eee, then you will probably have to use a usb thumb drive. There are instructions explaining how to do this on www.pendrivelinux.com.
There are a few downsides to the Eee though, it is really small, it can get a bit hot, and the battery doesn't last more than a couple hours. First, people are correct when they say it is small. I would not try to use this as a substitute for a large computer if I was going to need to use programs requiring a lot of screen space. It was a bit difficult to type with at first, but I have gotten used to the keyboard layout now. If you really wanted, you could probably hook up a usb keyboard to the Eee and plug in a monitor (there is a plug for it). Then it might serve as an adequate substitute for a desktop.
Second, it does get hot if you leave it turned on and put it in its sleeve. I don't think it's hot enough to be concerned about though.
Third, the battery does not last as long as I would like (under two hours). I am not sure if this is only since I have installed the Mint operating system.
So, the long and short of it is that the Eee is great in terms of portability, the Linux operating system that comes on the Eee is easy to use (and it works well with Linux Mint, which is even easier to use), and it is pretty darn fast. If you are looking for a desktop substitute though, I would give it some extra thought before buying an Eee.

Not bad but not for me. Linux kills this thing.
The EEE PC is a good traveling laptop, or a good starting computer for children but buyer beware the "Surf" editions of these notebooks are not upgradeable.....so if you get one make sure it doesen't have surf written on the box. The Sd card reader is cool, the desktop is acceptable but not nearly as functional as needeed by an avid computer user such as myself. The harddrive is insanely small 4GB which holds next to nothing, the processor is slow 800 HMZ w. 512 mb ram which gives you the bare ability to run the internet and watch videos online, evne then they are choppy. The OS on this unit is Xandros Linux which is my biggest complaint. My first point of advice, if you can buy it pre-loaded with Windows XP or install it yourself with an external cd drive. Linux sucks and give you no functionality what so ever. I tried Ubuntu on this Eee PC and it's just as bad except with ubuntu it doesen't have wireless ability even after wasted days of configuring all for nothing. Get XP on it to actually use it to it's full potential or better yet get an Acer Aspire Vista Laptop for almost the same price with a fully functional OS, great wireless and lots of ram/hard drive space.
A true carry-on laptop. Lightweight, small-fits in a purse. Great for travel. It's quick, easy & lightweight. Less than half the size & weight of my Toshiba laptop. No CD/Dvr, but who cares-it's soooo light. Travels easily. Charges quickly. Great for e-mail, documents, etc. Great buy.

Great for College
Very good for using during lectures, taking notes, and pulling out whenever you want to. It's small enough to fit in a DVD player case. I've also dropped my EPC a few times from about 4 feet onto carpet, and it survived. The battery life for me is around 3 hours, but I try to maximize my power savings. The sound isn't that loud, but there should be no need to use the speakers for anything important anyway.

Great basic setup and super portability
This little PC is super light easy to transport. The keyboard takes a little getting used to for touch typing, but once you get the hang of it it's not too bad.
The preloaded Linux OS comes with enough to perform all of the basic necessary tasks including browsing the web with feature rich content including Flash animation. It also has all of the standard Linux utilities to enable whatever level of customization that is desired within the hard disk size constraints. The default desktop is easy to navigate as well even for a computer novice.
The wireless works great, I average about 650' (with non-metallic obstructions) from the wireless source with a decent connection. It picked up the nearby networks just fine and connected easily.
For the price this is definitely a great little PC for kids or even people that are really on the go and don't want the hassle of larger lap tops.
OMG this is the best thing I've bought in a long time. I love it!
It's lightweigth, it's really fast, good sound, good video playback, with little keyboard (maybe u will need an external one, i use one), long battery life. Really good option for mobile work.
The hard part is the hard disk format and installation of XP. I follow the guide, but i must enter to some web forums to find solutions. The first thing that i had to do was restore the linux installation and hard disk. after that the windows installation did finish (previously it shut down without finish it). After that all was rigth.
Enjoy it.

Just right for travel
Love my Asus! Got the 4G in white. I travel once a month for business or vacation. I use the Asus for simple tasks like checking email, surfing, and light viewing/editing of MS documents. So much easier than lugging my 10+ lb work computer that I have to protect with my life. I can just drop the Asus into my purse for easy access when traveling. Turn on the Asus, and it's ready to go out of the box. No problems connecting to the Internet or viewing/editing MS documents. Screen could be bigger; speakers take up space. Keyboard is hard for my small hands to use. No way to easily play DVDs on the plane. I'm just waiting for the next generations that have all of the above for under $500. For now, this 4G is awesome!

Love my mini lap top!
I did a lot of research and read many other reviews before deciding to make the investment in one of my own. I can say I am very happy with my purchase. I bought it to use for traveling. It's so light & easy to take along! It does take some getting used to the smaller keyboard, but it does everything I wanted it to do with ease. I thought I would need to learn a new software program or purchase one with Windows XP. How wrong I was! If you know Windows XP, you can use Linux exactly the same instantly. Everything is completely compatible with XP and user friendly. You WON'T be sorry your purchased this little Gem!

More Functional Than You Think
I bought this eee PC right here, from Amazon.
I am an entrepreneur, a writer, a slight computer geek. I also have an extreme need to have portable items; I refused to purchase a laptop for a long time because I couldn't afford the level of technology that I wanted and I couldn't find something portable enough.
However, this purchase is one of the smartest I have made concerning technology in a long, long time.
The only drawback I saw coming was the lack of a cd drive...it has not mattered because any necessary software can be downloaded...or you can simply use an external drive.
I also read many complaints that the wi-fi was difficult to use. I found it flawlessly simplistic.
The included programs are more than enough for personal, school (I am also a college student working on my accounting degree), and business use. The linux operating system is convenient, and especially important is the absence of the multitudinous Microsoft errors and issues.
I would recommend this product to anyone seeking a truly portable computer.
This might be the greatest machine in the world, but it was useless to me because a modem is "optional." To top it off, I wasn't able to find out how to get this option added by the manufacturer; the best I could find out was trying to use a USB modem. I had to return the unit, and I thought other dial-up users should be aware of this issue.

Great notebook for its price and mobility!
I've had my Eee PC 4GSurf for 3 months now and am pretty pleased with it. I love how lightweight and portable it is, as I'm a student and I carry enough bulk around campus without the added weight of a standard size notebook. For basic internet and wordprocessing tasks, it runs nice and speedy. It doesn't have enough RAM to handle much multitasking, but for on-the-go surfing and email its resources are more than adequate. The wireless works well, but the set up is a little buggy. If you don't do it right, the setup can get stalled on "pending" but once you figure it out it's fairly easy to work around. The small keyboard can take a while to get used to as it's too narrow for most people to touch type on, but it's manageable. The battery life is decent, though not as great as I'd like. I typically get about 2.5-3 hrs from it.
My only real complaint is the tiny screen. I knew what size it was before I bought it, but I don't think I realized how much I'd miss having a larger resolution. The width isn't bad, I can tolerate the sidescrolling, but the screen is so short it can be hard to watch video content on the web. Some of the dialogue boxes for the programs and games that come preinstalled on the machine are even too tall for the screen and that's sometimes problematic. I tried installing GIMP on this computer but couldn't get past the installation process because all of the boxes extended beyond the limits of the screen. Again, given that I knew the screen size before I bought it I can't complain too much. But if I had to do it over again, I might choose to shell out the extra money for a newer model with a bigger screen. Overall though, I'm still happy with the purchase.
I find this a useful little machine; however, I find it hard to log onto some wireless connections sometimes. I thought it would be a bit easier that it is!
I love this little machine! I'm hardly a techie, so I'll leave it to others to comment on the very stable Linux operating system, but as an everyday user here's what I like:
The screen is bright and easily read in sunlight, indoors, whatever
The 8G hard drive is tiny by today's standards but more than enough for everyday non-technical uses.
It comes preloaded with OpenOffice software, a PDF reader, spreadsheet software, etc.--really everything you need for everyday use.
It's very, very fast with plug in or wireless internet access
Weighing in at a shade over 2lbs. with battery, it fits in a small backpack, large purse, etc. The compact black neoprene case is more than enough protection, but the power charger and mouse are carried separately. I carried it around Europe for a couple of weeks no problem.
The only negatives are a smallish screen that cuts off some windows so you have to scroll horizontally at times. The screen size is dictated by two one inch wide speakers, one on each side of the screen. I wouldn't be surprised if future models downsize the speakers. Also, the keyboard is pretty small--it's fine for kids and adults with smallish hands like me; if this is a concern try it out before you buy.
The biggest plus of all is PRICE! I am happy to trade off super-duper game playing, loading up with a lot of music, etc. for portability and affordability. This probably wouldn't be someone's main computer, but as a very portable second machine with basic high quality capability, it's a winner.
The asus eeec laptop is the best investment I have made this year. The laptop is not cumbersome to carry around and it gets the job done. I have made skype calls on this machine without a problem. I give it the marty two thumbs up.

Works as expected
First of all, this "mini laptop" is not intended to be a high-end mobile system. This is not its purpose at all. If you're looking for something in the mobile category to author/encode music and video, compile lengthy source code, do intense number crunching, etc, this is not for you. The Celeron CPU inside this unit is not intended for such tasks to begin with. This system is intended as a mobile general purpose computer for daily tasks for an average PC user. In this category the eee PC excels quite admirably. The eee PC blows away any PDA I have worked with. Its claim to fame is that it is a real computer. It works great for browsing the internet, email, word-processing, as a document reader (PDFs, text files, etc), work with spreadsheets that don't require heavy number crunching, and other mobile office tasks.
The Xandros Operating System it comes with is just as powerful as Windows XP (more powerful in my opinion). You will need to disable the "easy-mode" and install a kernel that supports more than 1 GB of RAM. This is the first thing I did when I received the unit. I purchased additional RAM, installed the RAM and a kernel to support it. Alternatively, the eee PC works perfectly with Windows XP. If you're more comfortable with Windows XP you will want to wipe out the Xandros install and install Windows XP. If you aren't computer-savvy, there is plenty of documentation online on how to do that. I kept the Linux Operating System because I have been working with Linux for many years so I feel comfortable with it. The good thing about the eee PC is that you have a choice of what Operating System you want to have since both Linux and Microsoft Windows XP are supported. You can even dual-boot the two if you really want to go crazy on it. I originally had it like that but I wiped out the Windows XP install because I needed the storage space.
Ok, having stated the technicalities, I'll mention the only negative that I have found so far: battery life. The battery that ships with the unit could have been much better, especially considering the size of the eee PC. You'll probably not get more than 2 hours on each battery charge. The only way you'll get close to 3 hours is if you turn off wireless, which most people won't want to do under normal circumstances. That's a big negative right there. I have heard some people complain about the small size of the keyboard. I don't consider this a negative since you know what you're getting. As previously stated, this is not intended to be a computer for primary use. The eee PC is meant to be the bridge between a PDA and a laptop. In this category, it is an excellent device and well worth it. I'm a systems engineer and I use it on a daily basis to do simple administrative tasks to send email, browse the internet, read ebooks and write documents. When I need more power than what the eee PC can offer, I still use it to connect to my workstations and servers. I used to bring a laptop to all my conferences and meetings before I had the eee PC. Not any more. I take the eee PC to meetings and conferences now instead of the laptop. It is much easier to carry around and I don't need a big laptop case or bag.
I highly recommend this computer for anyone who is looking for something portable yet powerful enough to carry out standard computer tasks.

Works for Mac Users
I am a Mac user and consider myself technically challenged. I bought the 4G Surf model to use mostly for a portable writing device and for emails. I wanted something with a keyboard that was bigger than any
PDA on the market. (I hate thumb texting.) I also wanted something that would easily fit in my daily-use tote bag. I hesitated ordering this device, because I wasn't sure if I could easily transfer Word documents between my Mac world and this little device (Open Office word processing). It works flawlessly. I save a doc to my jump drive and plug it into my Mac, click to open and No problems. I can edit a doc on my Mac, and later open it on my Asus, and again, no problems.
I agree with other reviewers that it really starts up fast, and is super easy to use, even for the technically challenged. The ONLY reason I didnt give it 5 stars, is that Im sure I dont even know how to make the most of all its features. So this is really more about my ignorance than about any fault with the PC. I LOVE this little PC and wish I hadnt waited so long to purchase it.
We love our Asus, and carry it with us most of the time. It sits on the kitchen counter ready to go whenever I need it. Great to have.
This item is great for someone who wants to access email while on the road, surf the internet and work on some files. It is very light weight. If your not familar with Linux then there is a learning curve. That for me was the only down side. Battery life is approx. 2 hrs on a full charge. Boots quickly and screen quality is great.

Fantastic Product...with one minor drawback
I bought this product for my wife (she is in sales) and she loves it. The only drawback I can find deals with my complete ignorance of the operating system (Linux). The system runs great...but I have no idea how to update it or even link it to my home network (windows). Each time I try to read up on it...I come away more confused.
Don't get me wrong..the spreadsheet, and word processing is extrememly similar to Excel and Word. Easily saved and sent wirelessly through email to our home computer. The thing works seamlessly...but as soon as I try to deviate from those simple task I run head first into not being familiar with Linux at all.
This is really a criticism that deals with my lack of knowledge...but if I had realized how hard it would be to run (or not be able to run) and executable file...I would have opted to have it pre-loaded with windows XP.
For now...she will keep using it (and loving it) and I will have to hope I can find time to figure out the operating system.
I've had this little computer over a month now and I LOVE it! It's ultra-portable and so lightweight. The keyboard is small, but so am I. I can see, however, how it might be difficult for someone with bigger hands to type on the small keyboard. It doesn't have much extra room, but I bought an 8gb jump and that works fine for storing my pictures and documents. I mostly use the computer for internet, email, and some homework. I have had no problems with the wireless connection. My classmates think it's really cool. So do I! I would give it 5 stars, but because it doesn't have much storage I'm giving it 4. By the way, I also have a MacBook Pro, but I don't ever carry it to school because it's bulky. I can put this computer in my purse, or in the small front pocket of my backpack.

Wow, excellent computer, I can fit into my purse and take it everywhere. The perfect laptop so far!!!
I love this laptop that fits in my purse. Perfect for traveling. This would not be good for a main computer, but for emails and checking accounts, map quest on trips-its terrific for that. The keyboard is small so probably not good for chubby fingers.

Great for travel!
I recently purchased the 4G Surf for use on a vacation. In the past, I have traveled with a traditional laptop but I decided I wanted something smaller and lighter. Having now returned from a 2-week vacation, I can say that I LOVE this machine! It's smaller and lighter than a Harry Potter book, making it VERY easy to put in a totebag or day-pack. It boots up incredibly fast and pretty easily finds WiFi hotspots. (I did find that unclicking and then reclicking the "Enable Wireless" button basically acted as a refresh and made finding a connection much faster.) I had plenty of room to store and organize over 600 photos. I had never used Linux before but found it easy and intuitive. Also, the Office-like software that came loaded essentially worked like the Office versions. The only hang-up I encountered was when I cut and pasted a Word document into a blog, I had to erase some html code to make it recognizable by Blogger. The keyboard is a bit small but I consider it a minimal inconvenience. Overall, I highly recommend the 4G Surf.

Really wanted to like this product!
I am sorry I have to give the Asus EEE PC two stars. I was equally sorry that I had to return it! In some ways, it is not the computer's fault. It is small, and I wanted something I could easily take on trips. It was also reliable, and inexpensive. But in the end, it didn't work out. The keys are so small and cramped that I found myself avoiding answering emails and composing a document was out of the question. Further, the screen is so small, that I found I was constantly tweaking webpages so I could read the content. Asus, if you could make a laptop that was equally light, inexpensive, and reliable as the pc eee--and make the keyboard and the screen bigger, I would be an enthusiastic customer!
me parece un buen diseño y funciona muy bien con internet

Great Notebook for the money!
What I like about this notebook is that it has lots of features that regular laptops do not have. It is very light, handy, slim, and performs fast and very well. If you want just to surf the net this gadget is perfect and with Linux it makes everything very simple. If you want to make it perform like a regular laptops with multiple tasks you can run XP as your OS and it is just fine. It boots fast and shuts off even faster. One very good thing about this tiny PC is that it can handle SDHC memory cards making it more a tiny but powerful device because you can use as much GB capacity you can to store either a program/sofware, photos, or even videos without a mechanical Hard Drive. I am using a 16 GB SDHC card which makes my ASUS Eeepc a 20 GB tiny notebook with powerful use! Good wifi reception too and it can easily connect to a wifi network. Audio quality is also amazing. Tiny yet sounds clear and crisp. Battery life is about 2-3 hours when fulll and properly charged.

Neat little computer
I've had my ASUS Eee computer for about a month. So far I like it but it has some limitations that I expected. The keyboard is small so it takes some getting used to. I'm typing this on it so it does work. The screen is also small but usable.
It is great for what I bought if for, a small computer that is easy to travel with and keep up with e=mail. It works fine with my DSL internet connection (ATT) and I've used its wireless internet capability both at home and traveling and it works fine. Not much different from my much larger Dell laptop that I'm leaving home.
I added a small travel mouse since I don't like touchpads. I plugged it in to a USB port and it works.
I really like the fact that it doesn't weigh much and that the charger is more like for a celphone instead of one of those brick things. Much less weight and size to carry.
Over all I would recommend it as long as you need the virtues of being small and can deal with the shortcomings of being small

A brilliant little computer!
I'm a businessman on a mission: I need to travel, present and work (which in my case means ready access to the internet), but I don't care to lug my whole office along with me to do it.
So for years, starting with the combination Handspring Prism paired with a Sprint plug-in card (what I'd come to call the Handspring "Pre-o"), I've been experimenting with the latest mobile technologies that let me stay connected and get work done.
In recent months, these technologies have taken a big leap forward with Nokia's N800 and N810 Portable Internet Tablets, sporting in-pocket convenience and standards-compatible web browsers. Plus, when Bluetooth-paired with my Sprint Treo 755p, these handy little devices get me on the Internet in seconds from anywhere I have cell service. Truly, these are completely portable and discreet ways for me to check and manage projects, handle email, address financial concerns, and manage contacts ... in addition to anything else I need to keep abreast of my business interests. In fact, I rely so heavily on my N800 that I would have a tough time managing for even one day without it.
But these devices lack speed, and if you need to do a lot of typing, you still need a flat surface and some sort of keyboard, like the Think Outside Stowaway Universal Bluetooth Keyboard (which I also own). Moreover, there's no on-board or reliable third-party application support with these devices for reading and editing Microsoft Office documents (you'll need to use Google Docs for that). They also have no facility to connect to a projector for presentations.
With all that said, this is where the Asus Eee PC fills a very useful niche. Smaller and lighter than Apple's MacBook Air, it's also one-fifth the cost and does all the things the Nokia devices don't. With a full-throttle Intel Celeron processor, and Linux pre-installed it starts from full-off to desktop, in less than a minute, and wakes from sleep mode in under 5 seconds.
Moreover, with a full-version of Firefox on-board, it blazes through AJAX-heavy web pages and web apps (like Gmail, Google Docs and Google Calendar) with all the speed of a desktop computer. Likewise, the integrated keyboard, though smaller than a full-size keyboard, is a huge convenience; plus, you can actually use it on your lap. The integrated OpenOffice suite makes editing Microsoft Office documents a breeze. Best of all, when connected to a projector the on-board 800 x 480 pixel graphics hardware expands and projects a full 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768 presentation on any wall or projection screen. Combine this with the Mitsubishi PK20 PocketProjector and you're ready to present to a room full of people with less then 7lbs of gear that fits neatly into any briefcase and costs under $1,000 total. (It's worth noting that because of the extreme portability this presentation solution offers, most of my accounts and prospects at first assume that I've spent much more than I have for such convenience. They're shocked when they learn how inexpensive it is.)
If you're willing to spend a little more and sacrifice some portability to get an even better presentation, the Hitachi CP X300 LCD projector is another exceptional projector, that never needs bulb changes.
Need Internet access? Just camp on to your nearest open WiFi hotspot and you're good to go!
Truly, this is a great little system and for what I use it for, I wouldn't trade it. But as with all great bits of technology it also has a few shortcomings.
Firstly, the 800-pixel screen size is narrower than the 1024-pixels that many web designers (and their sites) accept as the current standard, and the sites my firm creates are no exception to that standard. Consequently, there will be some horizontal scrolling or occasional distortion of many of the websites you visit.
Secondly, the integrated WiFi and connection interface doesn't begin to approach the ease or seamlessness of the Nokia products. Saved WiFi profiles often mysteriously stop working, and though the Eee PC always senses when wireless networks are in range, it frequently takes a tap of the "Refresh" button to see and connect to the closest (and therefore strongest) ones.
Also irksome is the complete absence of Bluetooth integration. Even after purchasing the Cirago BTA-3210 MICRO Bluetooth USB Adapter, I was utterly unable to get our Sprint Palm Centro to connect for Bluetooth dialup networking (or BT DUN), despite over 10 hours of research, experimentation and trial-and-error while mucking about in the Eee PC's Linux terminal mode. By comparison, the Nokia N800 and N810 paired-up and connected with the same Palm Centro (using MobleStream's USB Modem application) with under 10 minutes of setup; on successive occasions it takes just a simple tap of the Nokia's touch screen to get online.
In the end, we had to accept the Eee PC being tethered to the Centro through the USB port, using the same MobileStream application. However, this configuration works absolutely perfectly for "Internet anywhere" access. Better and more reliably in fact, than the on-board WiFi.
The final "shortcoming" is battery life, but I consider it more of a trade-off than a deficit. Since the Eee PC uses a desktop-level processor for better performance, you can expect between 3 and 4 hours of unplugged freedom before your little buddy demands an active power source.
Others might complain about the lack of disk support or CD/DVD drive. To that I say, "buy a regular notebook and accept the additional weight that comes with it, if that's what you want." For portable use, the integrated SD Card slot accepts up to 16GB High Capacity (SDHC) Cards and the sky is the limit with 3 USB ports, where you can have up to three 16GB USB Flash Drives at once.
In my final assessment, the portability, speed and cost factors far outweigh the shortcomings.
So, if you're like me and need (or love) to travel to see your accounts, but hate lugging around the gear to get your management tasks done, and/or make professional presentations from one case that weighs less than 7lbs projector and all, then this great little computer is the perfect device for the job.

ASUS does it again.
Small, fast and easy. The EEE PC has a lot going for it. Out of the box you wonder how something this small can work. But after the 15 second boot, you know you have something cool.
While the installed Linux Xandros Distro is effective and easy to navigate, I found myself wanting a little more. So, I installed Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. [...].
Battery power is about what you'd expect from one so small. I seem to average slightly less than 2 hours.
The RAM is adequate at 512 MB but for @ $40 I upgraded to 2 GB.
The SSD is small, there's no getting around that. But, if you don't load a bunch of apps and keep all your docs on SDHC cards, you'll be fine.
If you weigh the disadvantages against the obvious advantages of the size, you'll see the EEE PC fills a valuable niche in the portable computer field.

Great machine while it lasted
I got this computer for use as a secondary computer, not as my primary machine. I want something light, portable, inexpensive, reliable for basic wordprocessing, presentations, email, surfing, with good wireless access. I planned to take it to meetings and conferences that didn't require the presence of my much heavier Gateway TabletPC. The ASUS EEE PC 4G arrived within several days of ordering it. Upon opening the box, I discovered that it was shipped without any packing material. None. Not an auspicious start. However, once the battery was charged, the ASUS EEE PC 4G was up and running, ready to go after only 2-3 start-up steps. I *never* owned a computer that did that! So unlike my experience with Windows machines, all of which required hours to get them working right. I got the Linux version, thereby avoiding the headaches of constant updates, virus attacks and other XP related pleasures. It was my first non-Windows machine since the ol' Mac PowerPC of the early 1990s.
To test it out, I took the ASUS EEE PC 4G to a major conference, and it ran my presentation (via Open Windows) flawlessly. It connected to any and every WiFi I desired without a hitch. Open Windows worked with my MS files with no problem. I did add a few modifications to the basic machine. I replaced the 512 MB ram card with a 1GB card, and added external 8G SD card for additional memory. Worked great. The battery life was a bit disappointing. Only about 2 hours. However, it ran much cooler than my TabletPC, and quieter too.
I should also mention the great user group [..]). You couldn't find a friendlier, more helpful group, especially for newbies like moi. All in all, I love the Asus EEE PC!
Well, loved it. Unfortunately, the hard-drive malfunctioned two weeks after I got it. Saddened, I sent it back, and they gave me a full refund without question. I will probably get another one, as soon as I save up enough cash.

Ultraportable laptop for under $400-great for students and travelers
I bought mine back in October. I waited for months for it to be released in the US, and I researched and read reviews from every possible source. I was tired of lugging around my Dell Inspiron laptop that weighed around 6.5 pounds. That plus books, makeup bag, and general things I carry every day made my bag way too heavy on days I had classes. And I really need to carry a laptop to classes. Without typed notes, forget about studying. I can't read my own writing. The Eee is super light--lighter than many books I have to read for classes. I almost immediately loaded XP on it, which created some problems of space, but I dumped a bunch of useless stuff, and the speed returned. There's no hard drive; it uses flash memory. I keep any nonessential programs on one flash drive, and all documents on a second flash drive. The Eee turns on and shuts off more quickly than my Dell ever did, even when it was new, which is very convenient in school. When I'm running Word and using the Internet, one class (2 hours) gets the battery down to 30%, but I try to sit near a plug whenever possible. I sometimes have problems when the Atheros and Windows programs fight for the wireless connection, so neither connects, but I can usually fix it. The tiny screen size is my biggest gripe. A good proportion of the screen space is taken by the speakers, a really dumb design idea. The new Eee 900 fixes this flaw for $149 more. Not enough of an issue for me to spend that much for a new one, but maybe a reason for someone to get the 900 over this one. Built-in webcam is great! I can fit the Eee in my purse and it's barely heavier than a paperback. Everyone who sees me using it has to come over for a look, even our IS people (Good way to meet people). My husband is a big guy and has large hands and he HATES the tiny keyboard. I don't have many problems typing (and I don't know how to touch-type), except I often hit the caps lock key. I love my Eee. For a gift, I would buy someone the Eee 900 with the larger view-screen.

wish battery life was longer
I really like this computer.except for the battery life is very short! except for that this mini computer is top of the line in my book. It does all that it claims and more. if only the battery life was better I could have given it 5 stars instead of only 4. but I still love the compact, portabilities that it has and The price was very reasonable. So I would still recommend this mini computer to someone who needs portability as well as reliability.
This is an amazing gadget. It will do almost everything an ordinary computer can do. Certainly it does all one would need to do while traveling
especially. keyboard is tiny. Long reports tedious.
I really like it. Martha

Amazing little solution
I cannot understand why more people do not use this item, with all the hype about other PDAs and smart phones. It is just the right size - bigger than a phone, smaller than an ordinary laptop, and does everything one would want of a full size laptop. Using Google keeps all your data and photos safe and handy in their memory. Perfect solution for portable computing at the right price.
Tiny computer using Linux is much easier to use than one might expect. Twenty instantly available software applications onboard from the outset. At about 2 lbs. easy to carry, indeed to almost forget in a backpack. Sturdy, fairly quick, wireless, it makes for a quick reference source in wifi, and an excellent note-taker.

Eee PC exceeds my expectations.
The Eee PC has all the functionality I want for web surfing and web-based email, as well as the ability to open or create any kind of word processing, spreadsheet, personal information management (the equivalent of Microsoft Outlook) and presentation file. It came fully loaded with all the software I need with a minimal setup and configuration process. I was worried that the screen would be too small for useful web surfing, but it actually seems bigger than it really is and is quite enjoyable. The cool touch pad scroll "thing" is brilliant and a big part of why the screen size isn't a problem for most web pages. I bought the Eee PC for travel because I got tired of lugging my laptop around and I am delighted with the Eee PC.

It works with SDHC cards, too!
Excellent, and after trying it, I can report that it works with SDHC cards, too - something I had hoped for, but which was not explicitly mentioned either on the manufacturer's web site or on Amazon.com.
