Slowwwwwww Hard disk
I am taking the time to review this item in hope it will prevent someone from making a wrong decision. This netbook is EXTREMELY portable. I bought it to carry around my motorcycle trips and use Skype when in wifi range. Battery performance is medium. It should last for 2.5 hs tops. Most notably the SSD technology incorporated into this model makes using it extremely tedious. The hard disk light hardly ever turns off. Read and Write speeds are extremely low, and can only be improved by replacing the internal SSD hard drive with a new one with better performance (approx 70U$S). Anyways, the price is very attractive, and if you only want it to wacth videos or browse the web when in no hurry (turning it on and gettig to browse the web can take 3 minutes or more) you may be ok with it

ASUS Eee PC900 adventures
First let me say my Eee PC (Linux configuration) did all that it claimed.
Word processor (complete office package), web camera plus support, Internet
support, Fire fox web brower and more. I wanted to have C++, gcc and octave.
I was able with little effort to get c++ and gcc but my efforts failed with
adding octave. I then replace Linux with xp. It worked OK but was very slow.
I then replaced xp with disk encrypted fedora 10. Once disk transactions are
finished the speed is OK (this fits my xp experience also.) I am happy with
the current setup. I would recommend this for anyone who wants a very mobile
with word processor, spreadsheet, presentations, browser, e-mail (with web cam)
support. I would expect the software additions to increase as time goes on.

Great for school
I bought this mini laptop because the school asked me to get a low powered laptop for my 7th grader. He only needed MS Word. This was a great choice because the size and weight was easy to carry. There is no moving parts so I do not have to worry about the laptop bouncing around in his back pack (My son tends to run). The price was affordable [...]. The size did not take up the whole student desk and the power cord was very long (nice). Basically he only needed the power cord for the afternoon class because the battery was sufficient for the morning class. I especially liked having Open Office pre-installed. It was compatible with MS Word. The laptop is also pre-installed with some games and a dictionary. It also has a math tutorial which came in handy for me when I had to refresh my knowledge on fractions (what a relief). This machine powers up fast and the 16G memory is plenty for my son.

Cute Laptops for a great Price!
This Laptop is the best! If you want a portable computer then this is the laptop to get. It is small and light weight! I can take it everywhere I go. I love it! Only thing is I had to get a friend to load XP on it since it came with Linux but not that XP is on it I can do anything! I do wish it had 1 PCMCIA slot but what can you do:)

Excited to get it!
I haven't received mine yet. It comes to me next week as I expect and that is fine for me. My delivery time is greater because of where I live.
One reviewer mentioned that if you need IE to see some websites you are out of luck. Well, not really because you can get Crossover Office from Code Weavers and it will allow you to run Office and IE on Linux w/o a Windows license. I have it and it works great on my desktop systems. I see no reason why it wouldn't work on the Eee 900 with Linux.
Can't wait to get mine. I do financial planning and am creating a website and move about a lot doing consulting and taking notes. This will be perfect. I went to a local store before buying so I know what I am getting. I have a big MacBook Pro as my main work horse. It is fantastic but heavy to bring to my client meetings when I don't have to do major work. The Eee 900 will be a great benefit.
I will post a review when I get mine next week.

Small yet powerful
This laptop is one of the best new technologies out in the market right now. With the display of about 8.9'' and approximately about 3.0 pounds, it is perfect for a student to carry along to class to take notes or can be used for searching the net with wireless capabilities. Even though, understandably it comes without DVD/CD-rom drive, it featured USB capable ports for memories storing devices. With enough power to run Microsoft windows XP, it is perfect for office works and convenient for group meetings. With 6 cell batteries, it could lasts up to 7 hours for extended working times and entertainments. It has options including 1.3 mp webcam that would be ideal for long distance conversation and built in microphone for that same purpose. I strongly recommend this as a first laptop/PC and since it is powerful enough to handles heavy works, it can also be use as tools for students and office works. This is the new technology and the new generation of personal computer.
This computer would not connect to the internet for very long. It also arrived with some of the keys popped up and we were told we had to contact the company to fix this. It made it look very cheap. This item was returned.

Nice Little Machine
This is a very nice little machine. It comes with Linux, so keep that in mind if you're super dependent on Windows or Mac. It runs quick and is excellent if you're just looking to do some word processing, a little web surfing, listening to tunes, you know, any low-impact computing activities.
The only gripes are the keyboard and the battery life.
First the keyboard definitely is small, and you will probably have difficulty typing if you have large hands. Also, the keyboard is somewhat unresponsive sometimes, especially the spacebar. Deliberate keystrokes are necessary to ensure that all characters and spaces are actually put onto the screen. Also, take a look at a picture of the keyboard to see if the tiny right shift key will bother you, especially with its proximity to the "up" arrow.
The battery life is pretty low. If you plan to take the leash off this thing and go tooling around on the internet wirelessly, you'll probably only get about 90 minutes off the battery. But you can greatly increase the battery life by turning off the wireless and dimming the screen a little bit to get a couple hours out of it.
It's a few hundred bucks for a fully functional little comp that can take care of what most of us use computers for: diddling around.
This is the computer I've been looking for. Small, light, cool, SSD storage, and the price is right. I'll never go back to a large laptop or to Windows. Linux is my OS of choice, and the Eee is perfect for it.

So far I am pleased
I have two good laptops already, and usually take one or both on our many vacations. The older is a 15" windows from hp, and it works just fine, and has slots for our camera flash memory. Since we are mac people, we also bought a newer macbook, which is really a delight. Now we leave soon on a trip by sea land and train and we want to travel light, which is why I bought the ASUS notebook. I chose this model because it is the cheapest. After reading reviews, I was glad to note that my unit came with the 5400 MAH battery and the 1,3 Mpix camera. I rather favor Linux over windows because it is UNIX-like and I have a lot of professional experience with UNIX. However, the guts are well hidden by the ASUS GUI which makes the usual tasks easy. It accommodated my mouse, printer, SD flash, USB hard and flash drives without intervention. The only peripheral it would not work with was a Bluetooth dongle. My tests on the battery indicates loss of capacity if left in, but no loss if taken out. I was disappointed that gcc was absent as i wanted to add a GPS interface. A procedure from a eee-pc forum did not work. I may have more to write after I have used it on the ship, car , bus, and train.

Just an fyi on Xubuntu 8.10 and this netbook...
This is not a full review, just a informational post on Xubuntu 8.10 and this netbook.
I switched from the Xandros linux that the eee pc 900 came shipped with to Xubuntu 8.10 to run a USB727 modem through Verizon. It works great but I had to add another script to get wifi working on Xubuntu, as the original distribution would not recognize this computer's wifi.
I previously installed Windows XP and it was so much slower than Xandros or Xubuntu, so I reinstalled a linux platform (Xubuntu) and it works great. Even the internet and browsers work faster. What a difference! I do prefer Xubuntu/Ubuntu over Xandros.
This netbook does exactly what it's meant to do. Light, portable, nice GUI. Three USB slots which is a huge plus. And lots of free and very useful applications because of linux. The 1.3mp camera is a great addition and Skype comes in a linux version as well. You can install other platforms through the usb drive if you don't have an optical drive to plug into the usb port. Try Fedora's Live USB Creator, available for free.
I agree with other reviewers that the battery life could be longer. From what I read recently, Asus will be phasing this screen size out next year and concentrating on the 10" displays.
Long live Linux!
Oh, and don't get suckered into buying the $299 version from Target. It is NOT the same netbook - there is no camera built-in and it only comes with 512 Ram, ick!

Review of Asus Eee 900
The Asus Eee Pc 900 is a wonderful product. It works well, is strong and the Linux version works great. You do not have to know Linux to operate this great machine. Everything that I use is just as easy or easier than a Windows machine. I highly recommend it for daily use and for traveling as its such a small form factor that you can easily slip it in to your back pack and it as a pretty good battery life.
My experience with Amazon.com is nothing short of superb. My machine was just as advertised and was kept informed of shipping status and it was delivered on time.
Thanks,

Bought this to replace a larger 17 inch laptop. Other than slightly smaller keys and getting used to Linux operating system, I would say this is one great little machine especially if you dont need to do a lot more than internet surfing and email. It does come with open office but I have not needed that feature yet.

Defective headphone jack and poor warranty
I love the computers portability, but when you sell a computer, you have to be responsible for the manufacturing. The headphone jack is unusable. When contacting the company, they give me a number to attach on a package that I have packed myself and paid postage on. This is unacceptable when it is the manufacturers fault. I know for a fact dell sent me a shipping label with the RMA and included shipping. Do not buy ASUS. Although their response time is good, it is irrelevant when all they say is to just send it to us at your own cost. Its the idea of the situation that kills me, not the amount of money it would be for shipping.
other problems, batteries die when the thing is off. Lag proabbly due to flash hardrive is very pronounced when loading any program. Linux version basically supports nothing usb other than flash drives without any barbarically intense linux commands.
mouse buttons feel extremely cheap and I hate using them.
My recommendation is to look into the other brands as there are many now that were not around when I bought my eeepc

If you're not a linux expert, buy the XP version.
I commute by bike and train, and have found this notebook quite useful. The small keys take some getting used to, but that's why humans are adaptable.
Then the wireless stopped working on my home network. After three hours of turning things on and off, searching web forums, and messing with my home router, I'm ready to buy a USB cdrom drive and a copy of windows XP.
The wireless DHCP issue is all over the net, with 3000 different solutions, and in some cases, no solution. Save yourself the headache and go right to XP, unless you're a Linux expert.

Love the purchase AMAZING service from Amazon
I purchased the Asus Eee because it is functional for documents, the internet and more. Although it is not the same as a regular well featured laptop which is was very much aware of, I am quite happy with it. Most of all, it's portable! It fits in my purse and I can take it with me anywhere! New shoes hurt and asus eee just needs getting used to and it doesn't really take too long.
Lastly, amazon's amazing customer support made me calm at the thought of having an electronic item shipped. It got here on time and I will definitely be ordering my electronics (and more) through Amazon. I am now a certified loyal customer.
Thank you, Amazon!

It is lightweight and easy to take with me anywhere
I am very pleased with this laptop based on the needs I have, which are mostly for internet and word processing. A big plus is that it only weighs 2 pounds and I can take it with me anywhere and compared to my other computer which was heavy at 5 pounds. I do not have internet at home and take it with me wherever there is free wi-fi and it is a pleasure. The screen is wide enough for me and it the text appears too small and can increase the size and the problem is resolved. I've recommended this computer to others, as well.
I will be using this computer for many years to come

I love this tiny computer
I have wanted to try Linux for years and finally bought this little ASUS EEE PC 900 because it comes with Linux and because it is tiny. Being able to use SD cards for storage is working well for me as I now have 1996 international folk songs on one 8 GB SD card and the computer easily plugs into our folk dance club's amplifier. The included media handling software has a wonderful search function that allows us to bring up dances by name, country, type, or source.
A problem for me has been the software and operating system that comes with this computer is so transparent and easy to use I haven't learned anything about Linux!
A second problem is that the computer seems to be sensitive to the order in which it is turned on and my DSL modem is turned on. Once I am connected it works perfectly on the Internet.
Right now the computer is mostly used as my MP3 and WAV player but the included Open Office seems to be very similar to MS Office.
As an added bonus it comes with the ability to create Chinese characters by typing in Pinyin.
I had my eye on the eee pc since before the 701 was released. I was just about to buy one when the rumor on the street was that a newer one was about to hit the market. I'm glad I waited. The 900 is perfect. I don't think i would have been as happy with the smaller screen. I also chose the machine with the linux as I have been curious for years about that OS. So easy to use and the open office software lets you read, write and transfer documents to/from Microsoft Office and PDF files as well.
To be clear though, this isn't a laptop for high volumes of data processing. I have an IBM laptop as well as a desktop computer for that. But I have left the IBM at home when traveling and it is so much easier, smaller, and lighter. I highly recommend the 900 to all of you not doing a lot of typing but using your laptop to surf the net and keep in touch while on the the road.
In additon it has all the little things that you need...webcam, movie viewer, media player, games (tetris fans, look out!), SKYPE.
Battery life is to be expected with a 4-cell battery. This is a non-issue for me as I am rarley somewhere without an outlet. If I was it would because I am camping, skiing or canoeing and don't give a hoot about computing!
It comes with a black neoprene sleeve so save your money there.
The product seems to be good but take care if you are looking for a notebook with
webcam, although you see that in all pictures, only some models it is installed.
I had to return back one EEE PC 900A because there is no webcam.

Compact and handy machine
The asus 900 is a very handy machine. I liked the touchpad, the screen is very sharp, WIFI connection is quick and easy to setup. However, I was expecting a a faster booting, mine is taking about 50 sec, where people were claiming 20. Anyway, is not a big deal, it is still very stable and useful to surf the web.
I use it mostly at home to watch videos and news, then battery is not a big issue for me. However, for outdoor usage, 3 hour operational time may be very short. Then in that way, I kind of regretting not have bought a 901 with 6 cell battery.

Better than expected!
Before my purchase, I thought the Eee PC 900 16G was a good value, but after it arrived that was more than confirmed. It's a steal!
The hardware is solid. The microphone is a little cheesy, as is the touch pad rocker switch, but the rest is great. The speakers and video are especially fine for such a small package. Battery life is a little limited, but I find that no handicap in my use.
The user interface and included software are much better than I expected. Asus' Linux package is wrapped in a solid GUI that is VERY beginner-friendly. You can give one to your grandmother for email use, setup the account and pretty much let her loose without getting a million questions a day about it. (Sorry, all you tech-savvy, Linux-driving grandmas.)
Beneath the GUI, there is a full featured Linux implementation that will serve power users and can easily be tweaked and individualized.
The software (Firefox, Thunderbird, Open Office, etc.) has all the functionality I need, and Asus provides desktop links to hundreds of other software options, both free and for trial.
Best, and most surprising of all, is the Asus support for the Eee PC line. The support websites are well organized and easy to use. All my questions have already been answered in searches of the user forum.
And then, the topper. Three weeks after my Eee PC arrived, Asus offered 20 gigs of Internet storage for free. That's enough space for a full backup of my 16 gig netbook, and my Outlook and Docs on my desktop.
Now, that's a bargain! Thanks, Asus.

Better than I expected.
I am very impressed with this little laptop. At first I bought it strictly for traveling due to its small size and light weight. Now I use it regularly at home for the internet, work, and to access e-mail. The keyboard is large enough to comfortably type. I have and recommend the Linux version as it is quick to boot and runs very efficiently. If you're sick of your computer constantly needing updates, its Virus vulnerabilities, and taking too long to boot up and shut down you will be very happy. The OpenOffice was completely compatible with any MS documents or files I opened, and you can save files in whatever format you need. At some point I realized this computer does everything my heavier and more resource hungry Windows Laptop does, and with much longer battery life. The simplicity and quality is very good. I do recommend the 8.9" over the smaller 7" version for comfortable size and quality. If you need more storage or memory you can simply add a portable hard drive or SD card. Great product!
this computer is so easy to use. it took longer to take out of the box than to hook up and start using it. i love how light it is. i travel quite a bit and my 15' laptop was just weighing me down, literally, and was making my trips less fun. you don't need to install windows or anything unless you have specific requirements for the work you need to do on it. openoffice is less functional than microsoftword, especially the powerpoint equivalent. other than that, it has all the programs i need and then some. i thought it was strange that the speakers were underneath the computer, which muffles the sound, since it is often on my lap. but you can use earphones. overall, it's still the best thing i've bought in years.

cute but not functional
I purchased this for a grand daughter to use with her college classes. She was very dissapointed with the computer. Her remarks "Grandpa, this is really cute but it doesn't work nearly as good as my old laptop."
My kid loves this little one. She carries with her on the weekend and plays game in the car. No problem so far, everything runs good, we don't have to buy antivirus program. We brought this one for our kid to know how to use basic notebook at her 1st grade. We are very surprise that it is very easy to use. She sets up by herself and star using it without our help except for we have to help her connect to our dsl system. One mirror bad is that it doesn't have dvd drive to put our dvd movie in it.

Amazon tricked me into buying sleeve
I just got this in the mail and it's exactly what I expected -- light, fast, easy to use, except the keyboard and mouse, which will take some getting used to. The only annoying surprise: It actually comes with a sleeve, which was the only thing not listed under the "in the box" section. I suspect this is because Amazon sells its own sleeves for $20 plus shipping, and it came immediately. Now I have to figure out how to return it even though I already threw out the box. Really annoying.
I've had it for about a month and have not been disapointed. I only use it for internet though.

Installed windows xp home on it, the speed was OK until I installed an antivirus (AVG 8 cause its free), then the netbook became too slow for heavy skype use. The battery doesn't last long either, in spite of the SSD 2 Hs. 30 min, best case scenario (with the antivirus soft).

Fantastic Machine when Tweaked
I purchased the Eee PC 900 a few days ago and have had a chance to put it through its paces.
Simply put...out of the box it has a fantastic screen, easy to use touch pad and a very usable keyboard.
However, It is is a bit slow as configured out of the box (XP version). The great news is that there is a list of very simple, free tweaks that can be found easily using google that turns this into a fantastic, fast machine. It is now about as fast as my full size laptop. An amazing device. I stream lots of talk show audio and the speakers sound excellent for their size and placement.
The battery life on my machine was 2hr 20 minutes streaming audio and surfing the next with the screen brightness at 100%. Perfectly fine for my use.
I tried the Acer mini with the atom processor. It was fine...but I didn't like the form and style of the unit ( It is fatter than the Eee).
Get this machine...tweak it...and you are set.
The computer was a bit to small for me and I didn't like the Linux OS.
What I am not happy with is, I returned it for a refund a month ago and to date have not been credited. I am paying interest on an item I returned. Not a very good experience at all.
Don't think I will be purchasing electronics from Amazon anytime soon.

this is a great product... a "regular" computer takes me about a day to get set up and working.. the eee linux is easy to turn on and took about 10 minutes to get set up..
our company uses this for instore audits and simple tasks.
as long as you use the many great built-in applications, then you will love this computer, too.
the only difficulty is having other app's not designed to work with linux work with the eee. there is an eee user's
forum which helps with this.. but success is not assured.
if you are looking at lots of other app's, then look at the windows xp version and shut off updates as they make the computer longer to shut down.. i prefer linux as it's simpler and a bit faster..
i am very impressed with the eee.. and so far love it even more than its competitors..

You turn it on and in about 30 seconds , it is up and running. You just select the area you want to use ( ie, like email) and it presents you with the most popular choices, like hotmail , gmail and yahoo. Click on Yahoo and you are signed on and ready to ready your emails. The machine is very light and easy to carry. It is a good looking machine. It has all of the functions that an average user will need for normal activities. I liked the idea of this and anxiously awaited its arrival. Unfortunately, the screen size and keyboard were just too small for me to get used to. EEE PC 900 16GB Linux
I researched this buy for about 2 months - looked at reviews and compared prices. I've had the computer for a couple of weeks, used it every day, and am writing this review on it now from my hotel room. It has done everything as advertised. It is functional, easy to use and LITE!! I travel extensively and it helps me to stay connected. I hunt and peck as I type, so the keyboard is no real problem for me. I was intrigued by the Linux OS and it provides everything a basic user needs, though I will likely upgrade to Ubuntu in the near future.
Only problem I have noted is battery life. (If the battery lasted longer and it had Ubuntu as the OS it would be a 5).
I have no problems recommending this sub-notebook, I'm extremely happy with it.
I have owned a bunch of laptops. This one is the coolest. I have the 16gig Linux box.
Works great, boots in about 28 secs. Pretty much all you need on a basic level comes with it.
Word processing etc... I have not even really touched on all the free apps.
You can do some serious geeking out with this thing or not. It can just be simple.
The wireless is a bit funky to make work at first but if you do have issues there is a ton of info online. Oh, for what it is worth I am a Test Engineer. I test games. Hardware and software...
I break stuff for a living. :o) I can tell you the eeepc is solidly built no issues so far after using it for about a month 4 hours a night at least. One thing I was surprised about was the sound. It is way better then you would think such a small system could do for the price. I use streaming radio a lot and drag this thing all over the house. Its like taking a small radio with you. So cool! The camera is great too. Really one of the few things I have bought in my life that I have no real complaints about.
