[+] 2.0 Not worth the effort
Our previous wireless G belkin router conked out by losing it's radio signal. The computer whiz son had set it up but he's off on his own now. I purchased a replacement and meticulously set it up per instructions. The LAN part worked OK and after an hour of putsing the wireless sprang into life - for a while. Now none of the household laptops can connect by wireless, including the unit I first succeeded in connecting. Power-off-resets of everyting in the building, re-configuration of the laptops and resetting the Belkin router have proven fruitless. I'm resigned to having a wired household until we can locate a product that operates better than this. The Belkin wireless G is in the garbage with a boot print on it. Adios.

[+] 2.0 "wireless?"
I bought a Belkin G wireless Router. I am not sure what is supposed to be "wireless" about it though.

Having an older house with just one phone line in the corner of the bedroom makes DSL very difficult. I currently use a 30-40 ft long phone cord dragged through the house to connect the actual CPU to the phone-line.
With the Belkin "wireless" router I would have to hook the Router to the phone line and hook the Router to the CPU still and both have to run through the regular DSL Modem.

So what the router did for me was cost me about $40.00. I serves no other function, and once you get it home and try to make it "wireless" you'll find that it is not wireless.

If you have a phone line right where you desk top computer is located you could set up the "wireless" router to run an additional computer or a laptop for example in another room. But for those of use that have older houses, the "wireless" router seems like the best route to go is getting an Air-card.

[+] 8.0 Good Router for the money
I bought this router when my D-Link died for no reason. I was a little hesitant because I've never owned a Belkin, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I've owned Netgear, D-Link and Linksys routers and have had mixed results when it comes to reliability, signal strength etc. My last router (D-Link) was very spotty when connecting wireless devices (laptop/Xbox 360), would lose signal strength and was always having to reset it.

I've had this router a few weeks and I'm very happy with this Belkin so far. I have a medium to small house, so the range on this router works well (IF YOU HAVE A LARGE HOUSE THIS MIGHT NOT BE THE BEST ROUTER). Upon receiving the router I noticed this was the lower model of the Belkin routers, stating it has minimal range and is best for Internet Surfing and Email. The signal strength is very good and doesn't drop off, which was a problem with my D-Link. I have 2 laptops (Mac & PC), iPhone and Xbox 360 and all of them connected without a snag. The only reason I gave this Router 4 stars is because the set-up was a little tricky. I have CenturyLink/Embarq and the router set-up program didn't have them listed as a ISP. I had to do an internet search to find out how to setup my router. Luckily it was as simple as changing the IP address.

I've also used this router for Online gaming with my 360 and it works very well. I have DSL Light and was impressed with how well the router worked playing online First Person Shooter games. This was a constant problem with my previous routers. You really can't beat this router for the price.

[+] 2.0 I HATE STUPID ROUTER!
I've had the same experience as the people who have to do power cycles constantly . . . like 4 times a day. I can't get it to work at all now that I've upgraded to windows 7. And there is no obvious fix or driver available! (I tried to update the firmware; worthless!) I'm fed up. I've only had this one year . . . but I'm off to buy a new one. I've had much better luck with other brands]. No problems like this! It's nonsense.

Awesome product and SOOOOOO cheap! Easy to set up unless you have Windows Vista and then you cannot use the CD provided. You must go to the website - I did not see the insert in the package until I had tried to use the CD like 10 times! Well worth the money!

[+] 2.0 A bad product and bad customer service.
I wasted $50 and 1.5 hrs of my time trying to install a wireless Belkin router and another 1.5 hrs of my time on the phone with tech support only to be told at the end the unit is defective and I must return it to Belkin.
At the very least Belkin should have offered to mail me a replacement ASAP. Based on this experience, I would never purchase another Belkin product.

Don't buy this router if you want to use the internet. If you need more information read on...

This router drops your connection every few minutes. It sucks and it will drive you insane. I had such a terrible experience starting with the installation, to the connection issues, to the trouble shooting that I felt compelled enough to come all the way to Amazon to give it a bad review. Please save your time and money and go buy something else.

[+] 8.0 Cheap, functional, lifetime warranty!
This Belkin Wireless-G router (F5D7230-4) is cheap (frequently found to be less than half the price of the Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router). It is easy to setup, and has robust security options (WPA2/TKIP, MAC filtering, no SSID broadcast, etc.). Firmware is easy to update. Belkin provides a lifetime warranty on it (no longer true for their latest generation of products like the F5D7234-4).

I have two. I use one of the as a travel router (yes it is small enough, although I miss my Linksys WTR54GS and I may consider moving on to one of these). The second I use as a WAP in my basement (my Actiontec MI424WR just can't deliver the signal I need in the basement).

[+] 8.0 Excellent value for the money...
I'm not really sure how much more there is to say about this little wireless router... It's small, easy to install, and so far reliable; and, for around $30, you really can't beat it (I think I paid $23 + Shipping). I will say that I am an average user, i.e. net surfing, images, videos, etc. I have the router connected on the first floor of my home and I get great connection from anywhere in my house... second floor, basement, etc. So far, I am very happy with it; and, if something happens to change my mind, I will be back here to post that too...

[+] 2.0 The worst router ever
I have been using wireless routers for about 10 years now, but have never come across a router worse than this one. It is totally unreliable, disconnects every 2 minutes, you need to reset it to make it work.

Stay away from it.

[+] 2.0 Repetedly loses the wireless connection
This router will work fine for a few hours. It will then lose the wireless connection and the only way to get it back is to unplug and plug the router back in, wait a few minutes and the connection comes back. I would not recommend buying it.

[+] 2.0 Not worth the time
I bought two of these routers about a year ago to be used in two different locations. Both of them worked terribly.

In location A, connecting four wireless computers, one wired computer, as well as various other devices that would connect from time-to-time, the connection speed was terrible. Watching videos online, for example, would allow about thirty seconds of the video to load, and then never continue loading. In addition, there would be random disconnects that could only be solved by disconnecting the power supply. How long it worked after that was a gamble. Sometimes it would be a few days, other times it would be disconnected again by the time I sat down from restarting the router.

In location B, it was slightly better, but would randomly not assign an IP address to the computer. The connection speed was very slow, also, just in in the first location.

[+] 4.0 The wireless on it is useless
As a wired router it works fine, though the wireless radio in mine died after about a month. It still "works" sometimes, though usually anything that tries to connect to it will simply fail, sometimes locking the router up in the process. If you're not going to be using the wireless aspect of it, go for it, otherwise just buy a linksys.

[+] 4.0 Cheap -- but not reliable
On one hand, these are cheap little routers. They work most of the time. However, I have now had 3 of these, and the first two have been very flaky -- dropping wireless pretty consistently. I will say that it wasn't a problem to get it replaced under warranty, though. I guess for a cheap unit like this, it's not worth their time to troubleshoot, they just send you a new one. So I appreciated that.
I've also noticed that the look/model of these changes rapidly. I wonder if they are OEMing different models from manufacturers making ultra-cheap hardware. I can't say I'm very impressed.

[+] 8.0 Easier than Linksys
Well it was a lot easier to setup than the Linksys WRT54GS router it replaced, but unless you have newer equipment with one of the automated setup methods it still requires either knowledge of networking or some trial and error. The range is about what I expected for a low priced unit. My wife's laptop shows 3 bars (out of 5) for signal strength from 25 feet away through 3 ordinary plaster board interior house walls. My previous Linksys router, which cost three or four times as much, showed 5 bars. So far it's a good buy, especially for the price.

[+] 10.0 Well Worth It.
Once I took it out of the box I was wirelessly surfing the net in about 5 minutes. The range is great. Great speed. The advanced setup webpage is very easy to use and supplies all the info. about your connection. I would recomend this router to everyone. The automatic setup worked very well, I did not have a single problem with this router. It has been on and running for about a month with not a single problem. Excellent product......

[+] 4.0 Reliability is poor - locks up alot
It's ok - I've had it a while and it is still kicking. It does lock up on a somewhat regular basis - few times a week - so it requires frequent unplugging and plugging back in. The cord and socket are robust enough to take it. When it is working it is fine. Customer service does not seem to be US based, but it is ok. I had better luck with Linksys.

[+] 10.0 Good product with good performance
I bought it a year ago. Though it took about 1 1/2 hour to setup(it's my fault not to follow the instructions, with overconfidence), once setup, it works without any issues. We have to use blue cable when asked to use blue cable and I used the other cable that I had, it caused the issue. So, I would say, setup is easy if followed the instructions correctly.

I use my laptop in various rooms of my house, never fails. Signal never drops to zero. By the way, why I chose Belkin againt Netgear is for one good reason. I have Dell laptop and netgear has compatibility issues with dell laptops. I saw it with at least 3 models Dell Latitude 610, 620 & 630. All failed to work with netgear.

I usually power it off when I don't use it. I used to forget yet times. And I forgot to power off 3 days ago, to find it dead by next day evening. I check the voltage from power adapter, it shows pretty less than what it should deliver. Used a different adapter, now the power light glows but nothing else seems to be glowing. I did my own tests and failed. Then called customer support, they asked me to few tests, all failed. They asked my details to send an e-mail confirmation for a replacement, they did it in 3 days. That's a fantastic service from Belkin. They have customer support and sales in India too! Now, I have ordered the same for a friend of mine from Amazon. I will recommend this product.

[+] 6.0 Worked ok at first
I have owned this for over a year. First year was fine. After that I started loosing signal for no reason. The only way to get it back was to do a hard reset. Im having to do it every two days. I've heard ppl say try changing the channel from auto to a static channel, that doesn't work, because mine has always been on a static channel and it is still doing it. Basically the router is done. Save yourself a headache and extra $$ and buy a good router or you will be shelling out even more $$ replacing this one every year.

[+] 10.0 Great Little Unit!
Great unit for the price. It was easy to set up, and performs flawlessly. Not much more needs to be said. The only cons might be that it has TOO great of a wireless range, and there is no On/Off switch, so I need to unplug it, whenever it is not in use.

[+] 2.0 Save yourself a headache and DON'T buy this
This router has been an absolute nightmare since day one. I thought got a faulty one, so I even had Belkin send me a new one, which was just as bad. On average, I lose connection to the internet every 30-40 minutes. At least 10 times per day. Typically, it just needs a restart by unplugging it and repowering it, but now, that's not working anymore. I have spent hours on the phone with Belkin's technical support (thankfully, they are all very nice and somewhat helpful) and no one can tell me what's wrong with this piece of junk.

Save yourself the time and frustration and DO NOT buy this product!

[+] 4.0 Disconnect Problems
I wanted to just echo what some of the other reviewers have said. When this router IS connected, signal strength is average and speed is decent. However, at least twice a day if not more, the router cuts out wireless to my laptop and desktop (set up elsewhere in the house). I have to go unplug the router, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in. It's annoying and makes me regret not looking at more reviews before making this purchase. I've heard the Apple Air Extreme has good reliability; that will be my next choice.

We got this ridiculously cheap on Black Friday a couple years ago. It sat around collecting dust b/c the Actiontec Gateway Verizon includes with DSL service is also a wireless router. I revived it today to share a 50 foot cable to the gateway between my desktop and a laptop. Disabling NAT Routing was a snap, and now it's a plug and play wired switch. Couldn't have been simpler.

[+] 2.0 Pretty Bad..
The setup and connection was pretty straightforward. The diagram was easy to follow.

Once it was connected here is where all the fun started.

While in non-secure mode, I had no problems. Once I enabled the security, it failed to provide the valid DNS or router information even thou it authorized the laptop. When it did recognized the laptop, it kept dropping the connection. In the beginning I thought it was my laptop (Sony), but then I tried another one (HP) and had similar issues.

A month ago I switched to Linksys and so far so good.

[+] 2.0 Do not buy - needs to be restarted every 6 hours
We bought this router from Best Buy and it worked fine for 5-6 months but then it stopped working suddenly. We asked Belkin for a replacement (as the warranty was still valid). Belkin sent us a "new" router that is a royal pain. It works in spurts and needs to be restarted via a LAN cable from a specific Windows laptop every 6 hours. This is a ridiculous excuse for a router. Do not buy. We should have stuck to D-Link routers, our last router from D-Link was fantastic, it worked for 4 yrs inspite of hundreds of physical falls.

As-received, the router would only stay connected to the Internet for a few seconds at a time and then drop out. I called Customer Service (yes, they're in India, but had no problems whatsoever understanding their English) and they were very helpful; they instructed me to upgrade the firmware, and that fixed the problem right away. That was maybe 3 months ago, and since then it's been working just fine. I only took a star off because a product should be expected work well right out of the box.

Reading some of the other reviews here, I was a little leary of this router. But the positive reviews swayed me to try it. And I am happy to report that my experience has been very positive. Easy installation, haven't had drop-outs, it looks good, signal strength is good and so is security. Bought this used from a Mac user who couldn't get it properly configured, so perhaps thats an issue for Mac users. I don't game, but videos stream no problem. Well it works now. I was expecting to just plug it in and connect the cables. We ended up having a field service representative from the cable internet company talk to Belkin customer service. 3 hours later new firmware was installed and it finally worked. [+] 4.0 Not what I expected...
While this may be a capable router, the configuration is relatively simple. I do have some significant issues. Having an older model of the F5D7230-4, which is the model number for this router. I recently ordered two, and the user interface for these two is different. Not only is it different than my older router, the UI is also different between the two new ones.

this may not be too much of an issue for most. But, I purchased them wrongfully assuming they would have the same features as my older F5D7230-4. there is significant difference between the versions. mostly for my use, I wanted to bridge my wireless connections to insure I had complete coverage in my large home. However, these do not support it. Customer support at Bangalore Belkin was of little help - they assumed I knew little or nothing of hardware, software, or firmware. They were clueless when I informed them of my intent and needed to pass me along to a supervisor and level 2 support.

If all you need is a wireless 4-port router for a limited coverage area. This is capable. Beyond that, go with something else. Despite the price.

[+] 10.0 If you just want a wireless router this is excellent
If you're not looking for pointless bells and whistles with blue LEDs then you cannot go wrong with this router. It is practical, easy to setup and extremely affordable.

I think the engineers at Belkin thought "Enough with all the unimportant stuff and flashy designs, let's just make a good product that does what it's supposed to."

Granted, other routers have nice features, but let's face it, you did not buy a router to use its features, you bought it because you wanted to be wireless. You didn't buy it to look at it in a daze and say "Oh, pretty!"

I'm sitting on my laptop downstairs on the opposite side of my house. This router is on my desk upstairs in the most distance corner. No problems. It only took me 8 minutes to set it up, but I used some advanced features such as opening my FTP server, Web Server and Database sever ports. (By the way, I work in technology for a Fortune 100 company)

Here are some facts. If you are using built in wireless on a laptop, you'll get nothing out of routers with "SPEED THIS" or "EXTREME THAT" because YOUR laptop doesn't support that. 10X the range of others! No, again, your laptop doesn't support that. You have to buy their cards for that and who wants to stick a bulky card or USB adapter on their laptop and then find out the nice router was testing outdoors with no obstructions and really only performs 40% as well as advertised.

Now if you are streaming video, using a slingbox or media center, you might want that. But if you're just browsing the internet and sharing information with your other computer(s), conducting normal business and maybe checking out something on YouTube, you only need this router.

Keep in mind, even wireless technology from 10 years ago is faster than your broadband connection. With this Belkin 54G I can go to the furthest point in my house and still have more speed than my broadband internet connection can use.

I decided not to give you the technical factors but real examples. That being said, this router just says "Hey bud, let's get real, do you want to spend $119 for flashing lights, neat logos and a fancy plastic case? No, you just want wireless and you and I both know I'll just be shoved out of sight anyway."

[+] 8.0 Does the Job
It took 2 minutes to set up this router. I used the Quick set up guide and did not load the included disc. Vista Ultimate recognized the connection immediately on all our Dell laptops. The main computer was connected via the ethernet cable on the Belkin Router's Wan port and the other 2 computers in the house were connected wirelessly, along with our HP wireless 6980 printer. Everything was perfect. A week later I set up a 128 encyrption Wep key. I then noticed that each morning I would lose the Internet connection for about 20 seconds while the cable modem would reset. After pulling the power plug out of the cable modem and then disconnecting the ethernet cable that connects the router to my main laptop and then putting them both back in while all the computers in the house were shut off, I was not able to access the web configuration page. I even tried to reset the cable modem, but to no avail. Belkin's online troubleshooting guide would like me to reset the settings on my IE browser, but I would lose all add ons if I do that and, at the moment, it's no big deal since I wouldn't change any of the settings on the Router anyway. (But it still bothers me that I cannot access the web configuration page.) A Wep key is essential (but not strong enough) and I made sure protected mode was off. When I did have access to the settings, I tried turning off the SSID broadcast, but when I did that, my Nokia Internet Tablet (N800) was not able to connect wirelessly. So, I had to enable or turn back on that feature. Outside of the daily morning reset for 20 seconds since I put in the Wep key, the wireless signal says excellent or very good all over my house and the connection is strong. I have owned this Router for 2 weeks now and know the signal is much stronger than the Linksys 54G router and the SMC wireless access point that Roadrunner offers since I've tried them.

Routers are strange creatures that work great for some and horrendously for others. At the moment, it's accepatable for $40, but one never knows what the future will bring in Router land. I have version .8000 of this Router

Update (8/26/08):

I was able to access the web configuration page a couple of days ago and changed the time zone under system settings (under Utilities) from Pacific time to Eastern time (US, Canada) and since I did that, the Cable Modem has not reset in the morning and the Router works perfectly. I'm in NYC so maybe that was the problem. The default time zone for the Router is Pacific time so I suggest you change that if you do not live in that time zone.
