Product Specifications

Even as greatest hits packages go, this is an utter gem. Every song is inspired, in a class of its own, whether the real version of "I Shot the Sheriff," the hymnlike "No Woman, No Cry," or the sheer joy of "Jamming." Even allowing that Marley never wrote any bad material, then Legend is still the crème de la crème, the heart and soul of the Jamaican people packed into one five-inch compact disc. He was unique, and the message of this record, more than any other, is that he died far too soon. --Chris Nickson

[+] 10.0 Falling in Love All Over Again
OK, I am dating myself...Even so, the very first 45 record I fell in love with was The Eagles, Hotel California with Pretty Maids in a Row on the flipside. The first 8-track was Mothers Finest. Then along came my boyfriend with a tape of Bob Marley's Legend album and I remembered what it was like to fall in love with music again. Since that first listen, I have been through MANY tapes (some melted in the back of my car, some suffered the undesirable fate of one too many listenings, which caused the ribbbons to snap, some sufered cracked cases and still others were 'BORROWED') and had several CDs of this album. Every time one is misappropriated or damaged, I find myself buying another copy. I could have made Marley rich just on the royalties I have generated over the last 25 years. No matter what the mood, Marley never fails to touch me with his music, his vibe and his raw emotion. I have loved many a band, many a song, many a musician, but will always be ultimately in love with this album and with songs lit "Stir it Up". No album can make me sing my heart out like this one, or sway in my seat so resolutely. It's impossible to believe anyone could not love these tunes.

great cd if all the tracks worked. I returned the first to amazon because track 7 just stops and won't play. I recieved a replacement and track 7 just stops and won't play. I have to forward it to track 8 to finish listening. My player plays all my other 80 plus cds fine. So the problem is in this cd.

"legend" has certainly come a long way from its 14 track vinyl format to its 16 track cd/ or cd/dvd configuration since its original release in 1985. if you want to appreciate his art in its entirety, you will have to get every album he's released. but if you're a novice and would like to get an overview of this great man's work, this is a great start (in any configuration).

[+] 10.0 The Best of Bob!!
"Legend-The Best of Bob Marley and The Wailers," is a great collection of the raggae master's finest work. I love all the songs on this cd. It came looking exactly as is shown above. Unlike a lot of Bob Marley CD's out there, this one has his most famous songs. Many other CD's claim to have his greatest hits, but only have a few. It also has a neat little booklet, explaining his life and his accomplishments. There are also lyrics in this booklet. I love this cd!! It is without a doubt the best of Bob!

[+] 6.0 Should Not be Marley's Bestselling
First of all, I do not own this CD, but I own almost every Bob Marley and the Wailers album, and have heard every song on this compilation. I'm also not a fan of compilation albums, because they do not give a good representation of the quality of the artist, it's just like listening to the radio. The songs chosen are all great songs, but where is Kaya, Concrete Jungle, or any song off Survival, which is his best album. If you are a new fan, I suggest to start off with one of his real albums, either Kaya, Natty Dread, Survival, or Exodus. Ultimately, looking at the track listing makes me disappointed that these are the only songs most people are hearing. If you start out with this, it makes less sense to purchase an album of which you already have a couple songs, this is a dead end album. I think if I had bought this album, I would have never bought all the other ones, which I never get tired of listening to.

Very disappointed! We had lost our old tape and thought this CD would be a great replacement. However, the sound/tempo of this CD is "off." It would have been helpful to know that this CD was NOT the ORIGINAL, but some type of reproduction. LET ME KNOW THESE DETAILS IN FUTURE, OR I SHALL FEEL THE NEED TO GO ELSEWHERE.

Thank you.

What can I say? I just recently started listening to more and more reggae. I find that reggae at least is cool and soothing to the mind, no reggae music more so than Bob Marley and the Wailers. Legend is an outstanding cd with a collection of the master and his group at work! Again I really just started listening to reggae, and I highly recommend that this cd becomes part of your collection!

I received my Bob Marley CD in the mail yesterday. When I opened the perfectly intact box to remove the CD I was very shocked to find that the CD case was completely broken in half! I was expecting to find the CD broken as well, although it wasn't. Being that the box was in perfect condition, the damage to the CD case had to have been caused before it was shipped. I am a huge collector of music & keep all my CD's in there original cases so I am very dissapointed that this CD arrived with the plastic case in pieces!

[+] 10.0 Bob Marley 101: Always best to start w/ this one!
I remember the first time I heard this amazing anthology, although it was over 25 years ago, I recall that night like it was yesterday. I was about 15 years old, and up to that time, I had never heard music like this before. My buddy played this record for a group of us and immediately I was completely absorbed and elated. The very next day, the first thing I did was race down to the record store to purchase this album. I then made it a point to play "Legend" to everyone I knew - fans of hard rock, punkers, New Wavers, classic rock fans, jazz, classical, - they all loved the sweet, serene sounds of Robert Nesta Marley (a.k.a. Bob) and really, how can any fan of music not?

"Don't worry... about a thing... cause every little thing, is going be alright..."

Sure, this compilation of hits is just a small sample of this legend's work. There are so many great recordings of his that I would highly recommend, but if you are new to Bob, this is the best place to start in my opinion. He is a legend, there is absolutely no doubt about it. Bob Marley is the greatest of the greats (i.e. Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, Bunny Wailer, Toots and the Maytals, Desmond Dekker, Burning Spear, etc...). He is to Reggae music, what the Beatles and Elvis were to Rock 'n' Roll, what Aretha Franklin is to Soul, what Louis Armstrong was to Jazz, what Run DMC and Public Enemy were to Rap, what Black Sabbath was to Metal, the Clash to punk, etc... etc...

As most of my friends know, I have become addicted to Jazz music over the past 5 years, but I still love Mr. Marley and I own just about every album of his. While "Legend" may not be my favorite, this recording will always hold a special place in my heart. This is where it all began for me and as I stated earlier, if you are new to Bob, then this is the place to start. It's impossible for me to even fathom how anyone can not appreciate just how truly amazing this legendary great was. His music could put a smile on anyone's face no matter what kind of sour mood their in or how much angst they are suppressing. Sure to satisfy your soul!

Enjoy!!!

[+] 10.0 Great selection of hits by Bob Marley and the Wailers
"Legend" features some of the very greatest hits of Bob Marley and the Wailers--and what a compilation it is! As always, one could have hoped that other items be included (for example, only one cut from "Natty Dread"?). Nonetheless, this is a dazzling collection.

Some of the hits are compelling to include, such as "No Woman No Cry," "Buffalo Soldier," "Get Up Stand Up," "Stir it Up," "I Shot the Sheriff," "Redemption Song," "Jamming," and a nice bonus cut, "Funky Reggae Party." One thought: Quite a few of these songs appear to be love songs or whatever, but--in fact--have political content to them.

Let's consider a few of the pieces in more detail:

"No Woman No Cry":

"In this great future
You can't forget your past
So dry your tears, I say."

This song has a softer sound to it. The band plays well and Marley is in peak form. Since this is a live version (over seven minutes long), it is fun to hear the audience's responses throughout. The upbeat line, repeated several times, "Everything's gonna be alright," sets a tone for the song.

"Stir It Up": This song was a hit for Johnny Nash, representing one of the first reggae songs to break out to a wider audience (but not the first). Marley's version is great! The I-Threes provide strong backing vocals; the band plays well. This is an infectious version of the song and genuinely rates as one of Bob Marley and the Wailers' greatest hits.

"I Shot the Sheriff": This was a worldwide hit for Eric Clapton (it seems weird that others had great hits with Marley's work, without him having the same success). Marley's version is very different from Clapton's (although both work). As liner notes point out, there is more of a political edge to Marley's version. Band, backing vocals, and Marley are all in fine form on this work.

The bonus track--"Punky Reggae Party": The song is about getting ready for a punky reggae party, but there are all manner of observations scattered throughout this song, some with political overtones. One interesting set of lyrics that caught my attention:

"Rejected by society
Treated with impunity
Protected by my dignity
I search for reality."

The musical line from the band is almost hypnotic and the I-Threes, as typically done, provide fine backing vocals. Marley sings with pizzazz and spills out through after thought at a quick pace. What a nice bonus track!

In short, a truly wonderful greatest hits CD. If interested in the range of Marley's work, this is a good place to start.

[+] 10.0 A Great Collection
Bob Marley is an artist of such stature that it's easy to argue that no collection could do fair service to him, but that's really beside the point.

This collection is a great starting point for anybody interested in the music of this great talent. Is it complete? Of course not. No one disk could be. That shouldn't detract from the fact that this album is an amazing selection of music, great song after great song.

Yes, the emphasis is towards Marley's most accessible, popular songs ... but that's how it should be. Every fan will have their own favorites that they'd love to see on a disk like this, but for somebody just getting started with the music of this amazing man, it's hard to imagine a better starting place.

You all know the deal. It's the legend, a Bob Marley classic. If you don't own this album, I really don't know what to say, other than it's a must own and should be in your collection. All of Bob Marleys albums are worth owning, but if your new to Bob, then this cd will help you get into his music, as Legend is a great starting point. Peep the songs "Is This Love", "No Woman No Cry", "I Shot The Sheriff", and " Jamming". These are all great songs, and they showcase Bob Marleys many creative sides. Purchase, and enjoy the Legend of Bob Marley.

[+] 10.0 A Part of Us
Bob Marley seems to be in our collective consciousness. I recently traveled from the US mainland to St. Thomas via North Carolina (to) and Puerto Rico (when coming from). In every stop and at my destination, I heard Marley playing - original or covered material. There is never too much Marley in my home. My son "borrowed" this CD from me. His baby sons are also now listening to Marley. My Mum loves the music and so it is now being listened to by 4 generations. I nearly forgot - my 94 year old Grandmother also recognizes the music. One love!

[+] 10.0 Great of little kids too
This is simply a classic that everyone should own. It's become one of our 1.5 year old daughter's favorites. We have tons of kid's CD's, but as parents, we can only take so much. So we went digging through our music collection looking for some music that wouldn't drive us insane, yet would still be appropriate for her. The smooth melodies and rythmes of this album quickly made it one of her favorites. She'll always dance when we play it. Hopefully she'll learn to appreciate some decent music, so her music doesn't drive us crazy again when she's 15. Ha!

[+] 10.0 Awesome, but...
This album is classic because all the songs on it are classics and its the best selling reggae album of ALL TIME. I just want you to know this before you get it: You are going to buy this album, you are going to love it, and then you're going to look for what else you can buy from Bob Marley. Every one of his albums is classic. You can't go wrong with anything by Bob Marley (can you tell he's my favorite artist?).

So, if you think you're going to want everything by Bob Marley, here is a list of his studio albums (in order from oldest to newest) Catch A Fire, Burnin', Natty Dread, Rastaman Vibration, Exodus (the album of the century according to TIME magazine), Kaya, Survival, Uprising, and Confrontation (released after he died). Get ALL of those. After you have that, you won't need Legend because you'll have every song. Then go ahead and buy "Babylon By Bus" and "Live at the Roxy 1976," his two best live albums. If your thirst still isn't quenched, buy a compilation of his Studio One releases (originally released as singles so there isn't one album to buy...I'd recommend the Dejavu Retro Gold Collection). The only thing you can get after that are rare singles, and I'd recmmend the "Songs of Freedom" box set for that.

That's how I'd go about it, but then again I love Bob. You have to decide for yourself whether you just want some Bob or everything by Bob. Either way, you CAN'T lose.

[+] 10.0 A must-have for any music collection
I will never grow tired of "Legend." This compilation is absolutely perfect, providing an accurate insight into the musical genius that was Bob Marley. This isn't just reggae at its finest, but it's music at its finest. The songs on "Legend" can be inspiring, uplifting, entertaining, thought-provoking, but most of all just purely enjoyable. The simple songwriting and talented musicianship provide a sunny, lighthearted musical setting, the laidback Caribbean style that would inspire a generation of reggae followers. But it's Bob's messages and lyrics that set him apart from the other great Jamaican musicians who were his contemporaries. Bob's music is at times politically and religiously charged, and sometimes just for fun. But everything he advocates in his muic is positive. He wants the world to be a better, friendlier place, and he advocates human treatment and equality, civil rights, and freedom. He portrays his ideas in a simple manner that makes them all the more effective. This compilation covers the most audience-friendly and appealing of his extensive discography. This is a smart purchase, because Bob's discography is huge, especially because there are so many various releases that have surfaced between different distributors in different countries. "Legend" is an album everyone should own, it's the one that every new Bob Marley listener should not even think twice about purchasing, and everyone should be able to appreciate the music here.

The compilation begins with "Is This Love," one of the most purely roots songs here, a lyrically simple, musically catchy tune. "No Woman No Cry" is my favorite song of Bob's music, and this seven minute live recording is beautiful. The lyricism of this song is simple but really moving, from his talk of growing up poor in Jamaica to his philosophies on life, and the break for the guitar solo and background vocals complete the beautiful arrangement. I absolutely love "Could You Be Loved," a clever production that's immediately catchy, with a great chorus and standard Bob Marley performance. "Three Little Birds," one of his most well-known tunes, is fun, light, and fairly uplifting. "Buffalo Soldier" is an ingenious look at the movement of peoples from Africa to the Caribbean, and Bob praises his ancestors. The politically-fueled "Get Up, Stand Up" is a very effective rallying cry for civil rights. Another of my favorites is the winding "Stir It Up," a laidback, enjoyable and fun song. "Easy Skanking" is included as a bonus on the new remaster, a welcome bonus to the classic tracklist. "One Love/People Get Ready" is a happy call to equal treatment and some light philosophy, one of his most definitive songs. If you haven't, you must hear his ingenious cover of Eric Clapton's "I Shot the Sheriff," which is followed here by the easy "Waiting in Vain" and the very inspired "Redemption Song." "Satisfy My Soul" and the incredible "Exodus" follow, with another of my favorites, the unforgettable "Jamming." The remaster also includes "Punky Reggae Party" as a bonus, a unique party track.

Bottom line, this album is a must have for anyone. People of all ages and backgrounds can love "Legend," even if they're not a reggae fan. This music is clever, catchy, and fun, and Bob Marley is really a genius. Make this purchase if you haven't already, you will not be disappointed by "Legend."

[+] 10.0 Truly a Legend
Obviously if you are a raggae fan you own stuff by Bob Marley, so this review is aimed at those who have yet to "get into" raggae music. For people like me, who just wander into a store and hope for the best, you couldn't pick better.

I usually listen to vastly different music than this, mostly in the hard rock/metal fields, but being a curious sort I decided about a year ago that I wanted to hear a little raggae. With that in mind, I wandered into a store and saw Legend. "Hey, I've heard of Bob Marley", and I happily took it home to see what this was all about.

AMAZING!!!

It doesn't seem to matter what kind of mood I'm in, what kind of music I just had on, or what I'm doing, this CD is always great. Every single song is worth listening to over and over and over, as I have done. Something about Bob Marley's music is able to step inside of you, so you don't just hear it with your ears, but your heart as well. I guess that's why he is a legend.

Songs like "Three Little Birds", "One Love", "Redemption Song", "Could You Be Loved", and so many others on this CD are simply amazing, worth owning if you like just about any kind of music at all. Also, "No Woman, No Cry" is a phenominal ballad, performed live in this collection, which has become one of my top 5 favorite songs in any genre.

In short, if you are looking for a place to start exploring the waters of raggae, its HERE.

[+] 10.0 The Best of Marley
Many reviews have pointed out the huge significance and influence of Bob Marley's music. I just want to say that even though I have many CDs of his wonderful music, including interesting collections of early songs, if I had to keep just one CD, it would be Legend.

Marley even did an album in an earlier style, called Rock Steady, with one of his greatest songs: "Caution." Collections of earlier music include some of Marley and the Wailer's covers of soul classics which are excellent.

However, Legends clearly has his greatest songs including "Three Little Birds," "Exodus," and many others which other reviewers have elucidated quite well.

I was surprised that the others did not emphasize my all-time favorite Marley song: "No woman, no cry." The live version in Legends is perfection in music. To sum it up, anyone who is at all interested in Reggae music must have this CD.

[+] 10.0 Up from Trenchtown
LEGEND is the splendid, aptly-named posthumous anthology of Bob Marley's most well-known works. The must-own reggae recording for those of us who know next to nothing about reggae, LEGEND showcases such songs as "Get Up Stand Up," "Exodus," and "Jammin'," among so many others. If you don't recognize the titles you WILL recognize the songs. If you recognize the songs, then get the message.

The universatility of Marley's reggae is demonstrated by this simple vignette: Having loaded the CD into my convertible's disc player, I was stopped at a light near the local High School when I happened to look left and look right. The drivers of both cars were keeping time to "Buffalo Soldiers," and a group of teenagers crossing the street started dancing in the crosswalk. This CD had united a score of utter strangers. If Marley is considered a Rastafari prophet, I can see why!

[+] 10.0 ESSENTIAL!!!!!!!
while this does not provide the whole story, it moves you enough to forget the story and jam no matter the feet of things. everything on here hits. everything on here makes you move. if you are observant, almost everything on here makes you pay attention. what stands out for me is every track on here leaves you asking the question WHAT IF............? at least it does for me.

[+] 8.0 Great CD
If you like Bob Marley, this CD is a good collection of some of his best songs. There are a few key songs not on the album, but overall what is there is good, and the recording quality is good.

[+] 10.0 Jammin' Music..
This is a great starting point for anyone who is interested in Bob Marley's music. Alot of his good music is on this CD. From 'No Woman no Cry' ,'I shot the Sheriff' to 'One Love', this is a great listen. One of the things about Bob Marley was that he merged alot of emotional effort into his songs. You can really feel the man's convictions when he sang. Well worth getting.

[+] 10.0 Fun music for all
Brought this CD up to our cabin to share with my son, 3 nieces and nephew. After listening to this CD every night while playing cards and doing puzzles, my son announced that it is his favorite CD! All the kids, young and old, are all "jammin".

[+] 10.0 The Legend Lives On...
In May, 1981, after his death of cancer at age 36, Bob Marley was given an official funeral by the people of Jamaica. Among those who attended were the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition. Bob Marley was that influential.

"Legend" brings together fourteen of the Rastafari Jamican reggae master's greatest hits, this version adding two bonus tracks. Bob Marley mixed reggae beats with poetic and meaningful lyrics. This collection is one you should definitely give a listen to. You will be influenced yet mellowed by the luscious sound of Bob Marley's brilliant music and lyrics.
