I have had this printer for a few years now and I wish I had bought something else. As a few other people have mentioned this printer is expensive to maintain. The ink costs a fortune. It printed decent photos for the first few months we had it, but now all the photos we print come out looking horribly. And I have been having the same smearing problem that another reviewer commented on. The pictures are of such bad quality that I don't bother to print photos anymore. I only use this printer to print documents now. I hope to replace it with a much better quality photo printer soon.

Very Expensive to Operate
I printed about 50 4x6 pictures and the cartridges ran low. The cost of new cartridges is just about the same price as buying a new printer. The iP6210D is not worth the money, a poor value.
There are no Linux drivers for this printer. If you have this printer and run Linux, please contact tech support about the problem. They might get some sense, and produce drivers at some point. I've had the printer over a year, and no sign of drivers.

not a good choice
The photos are nice (that is the only reason I give it two stars), but it uses ink like its going out of style and the cartrdiges are very expensive. If you replace both ink cartridges it is less expensive to buy a new printer. That's exactly what I did. This product is not recommended (if you can afford the ink you should be able to afford a printer with more features).

Good little printer...
This printer came free with a digital camera I purchased from Amazon, and I have not been disappointed with the printer.
The printer came with everything I needed in the box to connect it to the computer, and it came with ink and software as well.
It prints about average speed, and has various print quality settings to choose from when printing photos.
For text, I have a B&W laser printer, but I kept this one for the occasional color document and for photos.
If I were looking for a photo printer, this one would not be my main choice, but it does a decent job for the occasional family photos.
The picture quality on photos is enough for my uses, but it is not quite as good as a more expensive printer would give, but good enough for framing a picture of our son to give grandpa, etc.
I enjoy the fact that you can plug a memory card directly into the printer to print pictures.
Overall, I am happy with the printer, especially since it was free for me!
As everyone else is reporting, this printer is pretty expensive to maintain- the printer cartridges combined cost about $60 and that lasts me approximately 2-3 months. I print only a few pages a day, typically only in fast-draft. I heard about Walgreen's new inkjet refilling that costs a fraction of buying a new cartridge, but of course these cartridges are excluded from most of the Canon's being able to be refilled. Finally, I have had my printer for 9 months and after about month 5, my photos are often printed with smears on the front and back of pictures (even after using the printer's neat tools to fix smearing problems). Consequently, I highly reccomend not purchasing this printer, even if it is a good deal- in the end, it's not cost-effective or worth your money at all.
I GOT THIS FREE FROM AMAZON FOR BUYING A DIGITAL CAMERA. PRINTS OUT OK PICS, BUT RAN OUT OF INK FAST!!!!!!!!

Gross Logistics Tail
Not a bad printer; I like the quality of print... but as said elsewhere, very expensive to maintain... Ink cartridges don't last long and are, as far as I can tell, more expensive.

A little disappointed in my printer upgrade
I have been using a Canon i550 for several years now printing calendars for my family around xmas time. Each calendar is 13 pages and I print about 20 of them (13 x 20 x 2 sides = 520) at high resolution. I use a lot of ink and the Canon cartridges are easy to refill. The print head died on the i550, so I searched for a new Canon that had similar ink cartridges to refill.
Several of the PIXMA series have cartridges that look the same with the small difference that they have a chip on them. Instead of doing a visual check of the cartridge to determine if ink is low, the chip tells the printer driver after so many prints. Lame, but manageable !
The i550 had 1200 nozzles (if I remember correctly) and the iP6210D has 4800 (again, if I remember correctly). Anyway, I was expecting prints to be much better than the i550. The prints seemed to be about the same, so the extra nozzles didn't seem to make much difference.
The form factor is about the same, but there are a lot more buttons and features available. I don't ever print directly from memory card, so a lot of the features I don't use.
I was also hoping that the print speed of the borderless 8.5 x 11 prints that I use for the calendar would be faster. This printer doesn't seem to print much faster than the older Canon.
Overall it's a good printer, but the quality probably isn't much better than one of the lower end PIXMA printers.

RIPOFF!! Bad Deal Here
I got the printer only to find that it doesn't come with a cord to connect it to your computer. After wasting my time going to three different places, the cheapest one was for $50.
Amazon's advertisement that this is "free" with the purchase of a camera is misleading to say the least as it's not honest about the extra $$$$ you have to spend just for a connecting cord. In my opinion, this has been very frustrating and a TOTAL RIPOFF!!

Good Enough for Me
Works well for the purpose of printing photos as advertised. Happy with the product, even more happy with the cost...
I printed my pictures directly from my SD card and they turned out beautifully! High gloss photo paper and a good photographer make for gorgeous pictures when you print them out on this printer! Highly recommend!

Did not care for it
It was bulky and if needed to be plugged into a computer.
I just received this canon printer this week, i tried it out over the weekend with the new digital camera that i got. personaly i can say that this printer works wonderful on photos. I am not sure how much ink it will use yet since i just got it, so that could be the down side to this printer. I also haven't tried to print any documents from this printer either, so that could be another down fall. I have to admit though i was a little worried about this printer printing pictures but the ones that i tried turned out wonderful. It is really a great printer for the price for what i can see. It also has two memory card slots that you can insert your memory card and print right from there, the only bad thing about it is that you have to know what picture number you want to print sinse there is no screen to view the picture. but you can also choose the option on the printer to print all of the pictures on your memory card. I hope this helps.
This is a great printer for making quick prints of your photos or other documents. For what I use it for the speed is okay. The only thing you might have to watch out for on this printer is the ink cartridges. Since a few colors are in the same cartridge, if you run out of one color you will have to replace the whole cartridge. Even if the other colors are still full. Other than that, a great printer for quick prints.
I have this printer in my office and am considering replacing it with an Epson. I has a lot of features.. espcially for the price (i.e. direct input from a camera or a memory card),but it is very slow and noisy. The print quality is very good.. as are most ink jet printers in this price range. But it is very slow and noisy. Did I say slow and noisy?

The Best AND Least Expensive Inkject I've Ever Owned
The Canon PIXMA iP6210D Photo Printer is the latest inkjet I've owned and used over the past ten years. I'm about to order my third set of CL-51 / CL-52 cartridges and get a third printer -- all three printers at little or no additional cost.
If you've been practical about your information technology purchases, by now you know that the intersection of quality and price does not exist at the bleeding edge. That's why I've chosen to standardize my text and photo printing needs around the iP6210D over the next 3-4 years. You can do this if you learn the simple method of refilling cartridges [BUT ONLY WITH the proper inks and gear made available by top-of-line vendors].
Here's the process that I use:
1. Plan your printer purchase in advance, 6-12 months out
2. Find a printer that's come to market with favorable reviews from the "experts" AND individual users. Canon inkjets use cartridges that are by far the easiest to refill.
3. Take advantage of the printer manufacturers' tendency to frequently introduce replacement models, much as you or I would change socks.
4. When your target printer comes down in price to the $50-$75 level -- the typical price for a set of cartridges for that model -- prepare to buy your first set of cartridges -- THE ONES THAT ACCOMPANY THE PRINTER IN A FACTORY PACKED BOX. Voila! You've just acquired your printer at little or no additional cost along with a set of cartridges that you can refill 6-10 times for about $3-$5 per set.
5. Order up your inks and refilling gear. Fifty dollars should cover the cost for refilling 10-15 sets of cartridges with the same inks as the manufacturer uses to fill original and replacement cartridges.
6. Consider buying additional sets of cartridges (with additional printers included) when prices have come down to $50 or less.
EXAMPLE:
3 -- Sets - Canon CL-51 / CL-52 FINE Cartridges ...................$172.00 [Retail Price -- $225.00]
3 -- Canon PIXMA iP6210D Photo Printers ........................ NO CHARGE [one printer included with each set of cartridges]
1 -- Order - Compatible ink and refilling gear............................$53.00 [enough for 10-15 sets of cartridges]
_______
TOTAL COST [including shipping and handling]........................ $225.00
TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP after only three [3] sets of refilled cartridges ....................... $ 0
DISREGARD ALL REVIEWS THAT ARE CRITICAL OF INK CONSUMPTION FOR THIS
PRINTER -- THIS METHOD OF PURCHASING SOLVES ALL OF YOUR PROBLEMS
Pat yourself on the back. You've just beaten "the man" fair and square.

Very expensive to run
Dont be fooled by the low price. The printer uses combined color cartridges with very small capacity. These have to be replaced even if one of the colors gets finished and cost more than the printer. Not sure what canon was thinking - are we supposed to use the printer once and then throw it away instead of getting an ink cartridge.
ps : I have traditionally been a big fan of canon having used their photo printers for the last 3 years.

Not a text printer, for sure!
I bought this printer because it was exceedingly cheap after rebate. Big mistake. It MUST be a photo printer, because it certainly doesn't deliver on text. All text seems to be in shades of sepia, even at the darkest settings.
I can't tell you how it works on color photos, so I won't give it the worst rating. Neither will I give it the best, because I am presently trying to resolve a technical issue where it prints one job and then waits for a full 5 minutes before outputting the next one in the queue. So far, tweaking Printer Settings in the XP Control Panel hasn't worked.
On a positive note, I think the Canon Easy WebPrint toolbar looks like an easy way to print out full web pages; I'll have to try it when I get the other problem solved.
