Miraculously healing music....
I have never heard "No Ordinary Love" played with such overwhelming charm. All tracks are wonderful, but "LA BELLE DAME SANS REGRETS" is my favorite, Sting's voice along with Chris Botti's playing was enchanting.
An artist like Botti doesn't need pictures of a beautiful woman with a fake mesmerized look on the cover of his album, but with an outstanding performance like that, some shallowness should be forgiven.

I have "fallen in love" with Chris Botti
I had always heard Chris Botti on the Smooth Jazz station here in Fort Worth, but it wasn't until I watched his special "Chris Botti and Friends" on PBS that I was totally hooked. I went to Amazon to purchase the DVD and started listening to samples of his other albums. "When I Fall in Love" was and still is the best one yet. I went ahead and ordered it. And to make the entire experience even better, it took less than 3 days for my order to arrive in better than "like new" condition. The CD is great. The ordering process is great. The entire experience was fabulous. This was not my first time using Amazon.com and after this, it surely will not be my last. Amazon makes it easy to navigate from item to item and their "Listen to Sample" feature is wonderful.

Chris Botti with some beautiful standards.
Nice mellow tracks. Chris Botti plays these old standards beautifully.
Restrained but very nice with some subtle reinterpretations.
Great if you like old standards. My favourites - When I fall in Love & Someone to Watch over Me.

A truly beautiful album...
A truly beautiful album for any jazz lover with a romantic persona and an appreciation for the subtlety of classic standards performed by a passionate artist. I have only listened to the album a few times, but I am most impressed - it is my first Botti CD - and the first of many. All I can say is...smooth...
This is one cd that I just leave in the cd player. when i get home from work I just hit the play and the music takes over. It has to be one of the most inspiring artist of this generation. Awesome renditions of my old time favorites. Im purchasing 2 more for 2 of my kids.

This Chris Botti CD is one of my favorites. Loved it so much, gave it as a gift. I now have a collection of his CDs (one more to go). I highly recommend Botti's music as it becomes addictive.
Absolutely awesome - it was a Christmas gift and recipient felt the same say.

If you like great dinner music and/or a romantic atmosphere this is one of the best and you will not be disappointed. The entire CD from start to finish is excellent and if added to a fireplace, great meal and some wine probably just short of heaven for atmosphere!!

Chris Botti - When I Fall In Love CD
I purchased this CD for my wife, as a present. She is a Chris Botti fan,
and although I do not go out of my way for smooth jazz, I found an exception for part of this album.
There are two songs on this album featuring Paula Cole, and for me,
these two songs are worth the price of the album alone.
Be your own judge, for me, they are incredible to listen to, when looking over the Ford River, in the Michigan UP, about 8 PM, near the end of June.

BOTTI Creates An Experience Of Inner Peace, Solitude And Personal Compassion!
When Oprah Winfrey engaged Chris Botti to perform at a private wedding she organized, a wondrous, musical door opened for the world! Botti's playing allows all of us to sit back, relax and forget about the troubled world we live in. His conception of Irving Berlin's "What'll I Do?" is a musical experience that touches the soul deeply. The added collaboration between himself and Paula Cole's laid back, bluesy, reflective voice brings us back to the songs and days of the legendary Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn and the many other ladies of song that illuminated their era! The entire recording is sensationally inspiring, and I only hope and dream that we will hear Chris Botti and Michael Buble creating something musically inspiring very soon!

Awesome easy listening music!
I play this cd to wind down almost every evening...it is so relaxing and restful. I'm not a music expert...I just know what I like and this one is great! I previewed many many cds before picking this one. I love the song choices because they are all gentle, relaxing songs-there is nothing to jar you back to reality as you are listening. If I had to use one word to describe the feeling it evokes it would be ...soulful.
The more I listen to this album the more it is turning out to be one of my favorites so far. The mix of pop and jazz done well really helps me relax. I just can't get enough of this music. You can get a good indication of what Chris' music is all about.

Botti is the Best
9/8/2007. My wife and I saw and heard Chris Botti last January 28, a Sunday evening raw wind and freezing rain and snow, at the Chicago Theatre just north of the Loop, and again with Diana Krall at Ravinia just north of Chicago last Sunday evening, September 2, in the Pavilion with clear blue skies above. Both sell outs. Also saw him on Ramsey Lewis's TV program "Legends of Jazz." He is the trumpet's "Frank Sinatra." We have given his CDs to friends. Whatever others may think of him, my wife and I are sold on his use of his trumpet with this music. Terrific! Inspiring!! C. Yopst, Chicago

People amaze me.....and oneday hopefully..they WON'T
This guy is awesome..I need not say more, but I'm gunna. I'm totally laughing at the reviews, particualry because Chris added a rendition of Sade's "No Ordinary Love". OMG, the song is so beautiful, just as "Ever Since We Met" is on ATKD. I understand how and why artist get jaded, when their efforts aren't well recieved when they do great work...example (Chante Moore), but I digress. Their really isn't in my awesome opinion to much critque about this Chris Botti's work. I'm pretty sure these are the same people that hate the company APPPLE and their products..Well guess what ," The intelligent crowd is always smaller than the mainstream" My question is..Where do you land? All you psudeo critics I compare to the "Holier Than Thou" crowd, whom make me shout "Let's here it for SIN!". Chris is awesome, although his first cd "First Wish" was tad on the SNUZ side. However, the day I find fault in one of his new cd's.... call me and I'll eat my words as we do lunch on the moon.

WHEN I FALL IN LOVE - CHRIS BOTTI
I'm a semi-professional trumpet player and so have reason to say this. Botti's laid back style is deceiving in that he makes it sound so easy as all the great ones do. Don't get this for a lot of "higher faster, louder" playing as many trumpet players do. I use it as a "must listen" for my students. Get it for his incredible breath control and interpretations of these classics (and yes at one point on the album he goes way up and makes it sound natural - at least an F concert)If you're of a certain age this is a great "date" album.

Haunting pop-jazz
This CD is identified as Jazz and I guess one could call it smooth jazz, which I do not like, being more a bop-cool edgy type jazz fan. But forget that it is labeled jazz, it is dreamy haunting music that captivated me. It provoked buying of other Botti CD's and although they are good, this is the best.

The man of the golden mood!
There are many ways to label the sentiment, expressive elegance, sumptuous tune, pristine musicality and peerless lyricism of this notable soloist, but the words mean nothing at the moment you listen him.
And the rest is silence.
In his later years, having long eschewed his cool-jazz past, Miles Davis was asked why he never played ballads anymore. He was reported to have answered that if he did, he was afraid he'd never stop. Miles' ballad style--a style and sound that made him famous--surprisingly had few disciples among his successors. Good for us, then, that Chris Botti finally and ably ressurects the Davis sound with this fine, mood-rich album. While one can argue with the occasional indulgence of the string accompaniment, Botti beautifully weds the phrasing of Kind of Blue with the lushness and romanticism of Clifford Brown with Strings. The album is top heavy with ballads, which is a good thing; Botti's up-tempo work needs a firm nudge toward the straight ahead. But all in all, this is a very listenable and compelling album. The title song is signature.

Soothing and entertaining
If you want a CD that you can listen to and be calmed immediately, this is for you. Botti has a way of playing his trumpet that sounds so refreshing and smooth. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys jazz music, but also those who enjoy easy listening music too.
I had this CD for a while and couldn't make up my mind wether I like it or not. I listened to it a couple of times and there's a lot to like about this CD even though you feel like this CD was manufactured for nothing but success, success with the average audience. Chris Botti's trumpet is lush and right on as far as pleasing the New Wave jazz crowd. It's very romantic and makes a real nice backdrop to a much anticipated Valentine's Day Dinner. And there's some real nice vocals by Paula Cole and Sting. The songs are old standards and familiar but done with such aromatic flavor that it might sound new to some. I like this CD very much for what it is and people who are hard core jazz fans shouldn't be too snooty and dismiss it as easy listening pop stuff. Chris Botti has some real talent and with the abundance of sax out there, his trumpet is refreshing, but don't be in a hurry to compare him to Miles Davis yet, let alone Lee Morgan, nice music though, gets you in the romantic zone.

Sail up to the stars
Ah, that perennial conundrum. Is it a smooth jazz performance or is it just instrumental pop? For years I've railed against artistes like Kenny G, George Howard, Najee and even Norman Brown (for a minute); artistes who not only think it's clever to play their instruments along the vocal melodies of pop songs and claim they're playing jazz but actually go on to have massive commercial success at it. They play just enough improvisation to substantiate their claims but not too much, so as not to scare the horses. Not that I've got anything against jazz artistes doing pop tunes. Even the heavyweight Pat Metheny did a cover on his last solo album, "One Quiet Night" but it was a Norah Jones song and it was almost a one-off. He certainly doesn't do entire albums of covers. I just think it's lazy and boring.
"As seen on: Oprah [and] The Today Show", proudly stated the sticker that came on this CD and indeed, although I had been aware for some time of his seemingly endless residence on the Billboard charts, it was on Ms Winfrey's show that I first heard Chris Botti. Oprah's no fool, I thought, and while nothing I heard on the show made me believe that this was anything other than what I thought it was, his appearance on the show was enough to make me want to find out more. I wanted to be sure before I dismissed him outright.
But the expected ennui did not come. Right from the first tune, I was taken in by the lush orchestration, which reminded me of great classic music and movies from the 40s and 50s. His trumpet playing is straightforward enough but it has a quality of tone to it that was mesmerising. I immediately imagined myself kicking back on a high-rise balcony looking out on the city, late at night or on a sea front patio gazing out to sea. I told my friend: "The music just lifts you up and you feel like you want to grow wings and go kiss the stars." All in all, it's pretty amazing stuff.
And while some of the songs, like "No Ordinary Love", do appear rather tidy, rather predictable, there are others, like "Let's Fall In Love", "Make Someone Happy" and "Cinema Paradiso" (which has a wonderful piano solo by Billy Childs), that are more daring and where he really kicks in some oomph and gets real jazzy. I think there's something here for everyone. Paula Cole sounds angelic lovely on "What'll I Do?" and "How Love Should Be" and Sting adds additional credibility and swing on "La Belle Dame Sans Regrets". "Nearness of You" is one of the most moving ballads I've heard in a while and "One For My Baby" just made me want to cry. Maybe because that song always reminds me of Frank Sinatra.
But is it jazz? Well, it's not quite as adventurous as Miles Davis or as complicated as Kenny Wheeler but on the whole, I think it is, and good jazz at that. It's incredibly accessible; hence it's chart success, but maybe jazz needs to be. Sometimes.

When I fall in Love
Another one i recommed highly for your collection. Even to give to someone special, she/he would love this one!
Mr. Botti has over the years continously up graded his sound. Less and less of the drab "Smooth Jazz" non-sense, to more of a definitive definition of what is Jazz, and what is "Junk". This Jazz CD, is likely his best work thus far in his musical career.
Mr. Botti has gone back and taken some Jazz standards, and introduced these standards to hopefully today's Jazz fans. I do hope this Jazz effort by Mr. Botti is given a fair hearing, by all Jazz fans, and not dismissed as "Old Style".
Real musical instruments accompany Mr. Botti here and less of the special effects. Even the vocal arrangement, is a joy to a Jazz lovers ears. Ms. Paula Cole puts out a very, very good performance on "How Love Should Be", wonderful is a tag I would put on this CD, oh and do not forget Mr. Botti's rendition of "When I Fall In Love".
All in all a well rounded CD, a Jazz lover's delight.
Mr. Botti, keep up the good work.

Botti is The Best
-
I came across Chris Botti's solo work through his association with Bill Bruford and Tony Levin.
If you haven't heard it already, I strongly recommend the CD "Blue Nights" (do a search on Amazon - it should be the first one that comes up).
"Blue Nights" is a live CD from the tour that supported "Bruford Levin Upper Extremities" (B.L.U.E.), and it is one of the best live experimental jazz sets you're likely to hear (2 CDs).
The thing I find most interesting about Botti's solo work versus his work with BLUE is that it represents such extremes: his solo work is hauntingly lovely romantic ballade covers, and his BLUE work is edgy, improv jazz.
Knowing both ends of Chris' musical spectrum only helps in a greater appreciation of his talents.
This is a diamond in the rough. Enjoy!

His way with the trumpet
The first time I heard Chris Botti was during a special on Oprah. It was good then. So I bought this album and when I heard the first track and from then on, it was like this guy has a way with the trumpet. When I listen to other trumpet players, it gets me thinking, "Yea, they play well. They play good." But with Chris Botti, there's just one thing I will say about his playing. It's almost like he is caressing the trumpet. The trumpet is no longer an instrument, it became a part of his being. Listen to this album when you've got a fireplace going, with a nice rug, on a winter's evening and just while your thoughts away.

Covers, but beautiful ones.
First off, I consider myself more of a classic jazz fan and often snubbed my nose at fusion and smooth jazz artists. But once I heard Chris Botti on the radio I've had to change my tune somewhat. Here is a master melody man who truly captures the subtleties of jazz, and the lush, wonderfully-produced tracks on all his Cds are a joy to kick back and listen to. While I was a bit disappointed at first to see the dearth of originals on his newest CD, When I Fall In Love, I must admit that Mr. Botti once again has won me over. This is a gorgeous collection of wintry-like love songs. Some of the standouts for me are the opening track, "When I Fall in Love," and the classic "Someone to Watch Over Me." But like his previous records, the entire album is solid, not a weak track to be found. My advice? Buy this record, pop it into your CD player, slide into a comfy chair and let the music wash over you. Thanks, Chris. But more originals next time, please.
