Coby DVD-224 Compact DVD Player

We bought this dvd because it was the cheapest multizone dvd. Indeed, sometimes when you try to save money you end up losing money. It took me some time to find the code for removing the zone limitations, but I finally managed it. However, after a while I noticed scratches on some dvds. I was unsure for a while until I put in a brand new dvd and took it out scratched!
Stay away from this dvd player!

It's cute and compact, easy to set up, and works fine. Don't expect something really high-tech and fancy and you won't be disappointed. The remote control is overly complex, but is easy to figure out.

Coby DVD-224 Compact DVD Player

I received two of these and with a little help from other reviews I was able to deregionalize them. I like the size and light weight because they are used by our Modern language department professors, who take them around the campus for use in their language classes. I plan to order two more this week.

The title says it all. I didn't buy this from Amazon, it is going back to the store it came from.

It is fine, but I only got it to watch UK stuff. The manufacture did not make it clear that your TV has to be able to see UK too. So it is a fine DVD player but I can't use the UK setting, too bad.

I purchased this player - worked great for about 3 weeks & died - was able to get a replacement from Amazon (very quickly I might add) the replacement lasted about 30 days...not so good.

This product is the cheapest piece of junk. I've had the thing for barely a month and the crappy buttons already feel like they are going to fall off. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. Just spend the money and get something that will last. It gets jammed constantly and you have to unplug it so it doesn't over heat. TOTAL waste of money!!

I wish I would have bothered to read these reviews. I thought the price was great on this thing, but mine is also havign all kinds of problems. It doesn't read any of my converted DVDs and sometimes it doesn't work at all. Arghhhhh!!!!!!

I bought this coby dvd player, and it came broken. Didn't work, waste of money.

I was so excited to get this dvd player to play items from the BBC store ...it did not play any of these from other regions...I think the remote must be different because the suggestions(and there are many on the internet) to get it to unlock for other regions include a stop button etc. not present on my remote...Coby tech support just sent me a cut and paste job from internet and didn't seem to want to be bothered that the remote they sent was different...it is a cute, easy to set up player but I already have one in every room and just needed a region free...I am still on the quest to unlock regions.

HORRIBLE PRODUCT!!!! WOULD NOT OPEN WHEN I FIRST REC'D IT. I GOT IT TO OPEN FINALLY - IT WORKED ABOUT A DAY THEN DIED. I CALLED THE COMPANY TO GET A REPLACEMENT & THEY WOULDN'T DO ANYTHING UNLESS I PAID $14 FOR SHIPPING (THIS DVD PLAYER WAS ONLY $20 TO BEGIN WITH) I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT OR THIS COMPANY TO ANYONE!!!!!!!!!!!

I liked the compact size and the simple setup. HOWEVER, after less than a month it froze up and wouldn't play DVD's anymore. Amazon is super easy to exchange stuff so I did that but the replacement unit they sent me did the exact same thing. :( I ended up just returning it for a refund.

this is the second colby dvd player i have purchased. it is an outstanding product for the price. i like that it is compact and easy to hook up. i see no reason to get another dvd player untill i want to get one that also records.
I checked out several sites to do comparitive shopping, overstock.com had the best product for the amount i wanted to spend.

I bought this DVD player to replace a DVD/VCR combo in the bedroom. The setup was a snap and removed the country code on the second try. It played all DVDs that I tried. However, the issue I ran into was the how loud the motor was. I was probably more sensitive to it because it was late at night and located in the bedroom with everyone else trying to sleep.

The return was easy. I wouldn't hesitate to buy something from BuyNow or Amazon.

I bought this dvd player it worked for one day and so I threw out the box and reciept and other paperwork on the very second day the player only spins the disk but would not play the disk whatsoevery looks like I got a piece of junk --- I am not at all satisfied with this player now it is just occuping the shelf space on my entertainment system

I check the reviews before buying this product, I said to myself "they must be exaggerating" and bought it, It stopped working after watching 3 movies ... I took it to the recycling facilities. I have now a Phillips, bought it in Target for 30 USD.

For the price, the feature set is pretty unrivaled... It's all good... Up until it dies.

Output quality is really good, especially considering the tiny price... Build quality is another thing, though. After about a month, it started having reading errors, quiting playing and going back to the idle screen. A couple days later, it wouldn't even spin anymore, unable to read any disk. In the end, pretty much disposable...

Maybe our unit was defective, or got manhandled during shipping, but in the end, I'd have a tough time recommending this unit to anyone who needs to get more than a month's use out of it.

After several days of searching for the right DVD player for the right price to use as my secondary DVD player, I chose this one. I read the reviews and decided that this was the right DVD player based on my needs. I am happy with my purchase, because, after all, you get what you pay for; however, there is something I wish I had known before I bought this player because it might have changed my mind.

When you watch a DVD and decide to pause it, be prepared to hit pause again after a few minutes. Like some old models of VHS players, this DVD player resumes playing after a brief pause (about 10 minutes) even when you have not hit play. The same thing happens when you hit stop; after a short time the DVD resumes playing. This is not a good quality and one I dislike immensely. This really wouldn't be a problem, if I could just stop the player and turn off the power. But no! When a DVD is stopped and the power turned off, the DVD restarts itself, which means you have to skip ahead to get where you were when you stopped it. This is very annoying. Thank goodness the DVD player is equipped with an excellent remote that makes skipping around easy.

This is not a huge problem, but I as I watch a lot of TV on DVD and cannot possible watch an entire disc at one time, it does eventually become quite annoying. For anyone who watches a lot of TV on DVD, I would not recommend this player if you plan on pausing or stopping your player a good bit.

I had a problem with this DVD player. I hooked it up to a TV/VCR combo.
The instructions said that I might need coaxial cables but they did not
improve the situation. The picture fades in and out on all but one of my
DVD's. Very disappointing. Don't waste your time or money on this one!

I had to return the first one as the sound went out after watchiung just two movies on it, could only get a whisper type volume level. However I returned it for the same model as it was everything I was looking for in this DVD players location. I can only hope that this one lasts.

I purchased this DVD player only a month ago, and a week and a half ago, it stopped reading the DVDs.
I would recommend spending a little more money and saving yourself the hassle.

I got this player to replace an old one my Mother had. I noticed it is easy to connect (uses the standard RCA connectors for video, R and L audio), and easy to use. It is very small and portable; therefore, it would be great for travel. It seems to be a fine player for the price. It is a player that if the kids knock it off and break it, wouldn't be hard to replace. As I said I did NOT get it for myself, but my Mother is using it with no problems. She says it will play any DVD she puts in it. Oh, if I needed a player, I would get another one for myself.

It's not happening often to me but, this little box performance did exceed my expectations.

We have a 9-10 yr. old 27" TV in the bedroom and we have no intention of replacing it because it does what it's expected to do - help me fall asleep while watching C-Span or maybe a Columbo episode or something of that kind. Up until now, we had problems with various DVD players, some more sophisticated than other, but all demanding that we clean our DVD's and, in many instances, refusing to play some even after repeated cleaning.

I am happy to state that this little $25 player is playing ALL the DVD's I've thrown at it so far, including those that its predecessor, a relatively expensive machine that I threw into the trash after less than 2 years of service, refused to recognize. I've been using this device for almost 2 months now.

As far as features... well... it plays DVD's. It has stop, fast forward/backward, pause... does it really matter? The remote control is not very well designed but, again, [...] it works well.

This DVD player died after two hours (one movie). It has an awful spin sound when it does work. After a short use, the screen freezes and getting your CD out of the machine after it dies it no picnic. Beware of this cheaply made, useless product.

this is a second player i bought. I owe 1 and just bought 2nd one for my parents. had no problems. its cheap and works great if you need to play ntsc or pal dvds

I bought this DVD player in late May and was away for the summer. I started using it two weeks ago, probably 3 to 4 times till now. I haven't been able to played any DVDs since last night. This really sucks!

I refused this product and the money didn't came back in my credit card yet. When are you going to do that? I'm waiting...

I was looking for a simple DVD player primarily for watching movies and space was limited in my entertainment center. This unit is small, easy to install and very simple to operate. Picture quality is excellent for a DVD player in this price range.

Worked for 1-2 weeks, after that it stopped working. The unit started humming and discs wouldn't play anymore. Complete waste of your time and money. Invest your money into something that works.

I bought this one and it worked for a week and stopped working after a week. When I put the DVD it revolves and revolves for ever. I wont buy this product again and I dont recomment to buy it.Its waste of time and Money.

I like the product so far. It's a bit too bulky but it's just as described of course. The price is perfect for the unit so I like it a ton.

Perfect DVD player for the casual DVD watcher. It's small, so it doesn't take up much space, easy to read buttons on the remote, very easy to figure out. Good for yourself, or as a gift to anybody of any age that you know! Fantastic.

I bought this because we were looking for a cheap, 'no frills' DVD player. It won't play at least 1/3 of the DVDs I own- discs that have never had a problem in numerous other players. The ones that it WILL play, it skips around a lot. Really inferior product. I would warn anybody off of this one- drop the extra 10 bucks and buy ANY other DVD player, or you will be sorry you didn't.

The NTSC PAL conversion on this model doesn't work properly, I've tried it on several different units. If you play a PAL disc and convert to NTSC, a pulsating blurriness affects the image. Spend $20 more and get something better.

This DVD Player arrived within a few days and is working out well. The size is wonderful being 6lbs and small enough to look clean and blendable with the t.v. Thank you with appreciation, Amazon.

The Colby DVD player was my choice because it is a simple design and fits in my wall unit.

No bells. No whistles. Does what was expwcted/stated. I am satisfied with what my limited resources afforded me. I am happy that Amazon could/chose to provide it. (Sorrento , FL)

I bought this unit for guests and for people to watch while ill. It had less tan 10 hours of use before it died. It was plugged into a power strip desiged to protect it from power surges. Unfortunately the warrenty was only 90 days. Tried to use it today and it was completely dead. No power light and no response from the remote (installed new batteries). In my opinion you get what you pay for. I went cheap and got cheap. Made in China.

I was looking for a DVD player that will play DVDs from Asia. This one does play them. I did try to change the region code according to one previous review. I am not sure the instructions work, I think it plays right out of box. I am satisfied with it.

I had heard that the Coby 224 DVD player plays region 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 DVDs but wasn't ready to believe it until I saw it. Sure enough I buy it, set it up, stick a DVD in from Europe and instantly the DVD played it, recognizing it as a region 2 DVD. I tried my DVDs from Australia and Japan and they too played like a dream. I didn't need to convert or follow instructions like a previous reviewer posted here; it played any region DVD right from the start and out of the box.

If you've been putting off buying an expensive region-free DVD player (the ones that cost $140 up) look no further. This under $30 DVD player will do the same.

The Coby 224 has a great picture but a lousy remote control. But who cares. It plays any DVD from around the world and that's good enough for me.

I got this to replace another inexpensive coby DVD player for a workshop. This one is fair. Very slow response time. From one to two seconds to act when buttons are pushed. It came with an unsightly sticker from the manufacturer applied on the top regarding troubleshooting. Very flimsy construction on both the unit and remote. Probably won't last long.

I got this DVD player for working out. No hard use, no intense visuals, no huge demands of it. To that end it performs wonderfully. I've had no problems with it being finicky or selective in what DVDs it would play. As it is a very simple player it is lite in controls and tweaks, but for the price you can't beat it. It is what it is and I'm very pleased.

I bought this dvd player back in March. A few weeks ago it stopped turning on completely. It's turned on once since then but has not turned on again. It's a waste of money. It would be better to spend even a bit more money on a dvd player that is going to last. Unfortunately, it stopped working after the return period so I'm stuck with it and can only buy a new one. I am not pleased with this product at all. Don't waste your money!

This is a great product. It's small and easy to move from T.V. to T.V. as well as being able to sit on top of our cable box without being some bulky DVD. This is our third Colby we own and we haven't had a problem with any of them. If we were to ever buy another, Colby is the the way we would go!

After a few months, this DVD player stopped recognizing that a DVD was inserted. Maybe it can be fixed, but for the price its not worth the bother.

This is my 2nd coby dvd player, the reason I got this new one is because the remote died on me from the old player, and without the remote, you cannot control anything from the player itself. This 224 remote has the worse design, it has many buttons that are not useful on it and is not the same as it showed on the picture. The main button like play, fast forward, rewind and pause are on the very bottom of the remote, which are way inconvenience.

Tips: Fast forward and Rewind is the same button as previous and next chapter, you need to hold the button 2 to 3 seconds for it to start fast forwarding (x2, x4, x8, x16, x32), however, it is very sensitive that you always end up skipping to the next chapter.

Overall, the player itself is good, but the remote control sucks!!! I like the previous model remote control better!
