should be labeled "disposable" dvd player
coby knows that this product is bad and that is why they only cover it for 90 days,
they know that is about as long as it will work them it will be going in the trash.
save your money.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS JUNK !!!
I found this item at BrandsMart on a table of open box/returned merchandise. I purchased this open box unit for about $9. The only way to make it work required unplugging the power cord almost constantly to make the unit reset. I took it back to the store after about 60-90 days and they would not take it back. Coby makes several electronic items, but I am reluctant to purchase any of them based upon my most recent experience.

Buzzed out of the box
Product was defective out of the box, it buzzed. Amazon was great about the refund and the return. You could not ask for a better vendor. The product was not, but Amazon took care of the problem immediately. Thanks Amazon, but I would dump this manufacturer.

Worthless piece of junk
I have gone through three of these DVD players and they have all busted within 2 months. The first player stopped ejecting the disc. On the last two the power suddenly would not turn on (yes they were plugged in!). I had to get a pair of pliers out and rip open the player to get my DVD out. This DVD player is not worth your time no matter how cheap and compact it might be.

The worstest DVD player in the market
This Coby-233 DVD Player is the worst one in the market. It is not worthwhile even if you get it for 1$. It is stopped working with in a week after I purchased. You will see a "No Disc" message always.

Defective Product, Great Customer Service
I didn't own this Coby DVD player for very long before returning it to Amazon. The only reason I needed: the unit would create long scratches extending across the data side of any DVD I played in it. One of the DVD's that it scratched I'd owned for a while, but another DVD it damaged had literally just been purchased and was being played for the very first time in this Coby DVD player. Obviously I wasn't going to sacrifice any more of my discs to a DVD player that had to scratch them in order to play them, and I soon contacted customer service regarding the unit's return and a refund.
I gave this DVD player one star, but Amazon.com's customer service deserves five stars. Amazon responded to my e-mail within maybe an hour and provided me with the help I needed as well as reassurance concerning a refund. I'm confident that I will receive a full refund before too long, and although I don't see myself ever giving the Coby brand a second chance I'm glad that it was Amazon's customer service with which I had to deal.

buyer bewareof this seller
item was used, advertised as new, player did not work. Item was shipped in original package. Seller knew merchandise was defective.
It would not play PAL dvd's as advertised. It will play region code 0 and 1. I tried calling COBY twice and after being put on hold for 10 minutes each time, I was cut off.
I did find a hack code online that works:
1. Turn on the player and open the tray.
2. Press MENU, 8, 8, 8, 8 on the remote. You should see 5 asterisks near the top left of your screen.
3. Press DISPLAY. A dialog box will show the current region code.
4. Press 0. A new dialog box shows 0 (region free) and a warning. Ignore the warning and don't press any keys on the remote.
5. Close tray using the remote control. Turn the device off and on again and enjoy your $30 player with any region code DVDs.
AVOID AVOID AVOID
Wish I'd read these other reviews before purchasing this, this... object at a store. I'd had a cheap Coby before, and it lasted a couple of years, so, boy, was I surprised when this one responded to the remote ONE time. After that, it responded to the buttons on it, but they don't do all operations you need by any means. I thought it was just the remote, but after reading some of these unflattering reviews, I see that it really is the machine.
Thank goodness my son gave me some money for Christmas! I'm going to buy myself a decent player! No more Coby! Let's start a boycott!
I was lucky. I had this DVD player for nearly a year before it suddenly stopped working. I had just used it recently, but today it refuses to power on under any circumstances. It was plugged into a quality surge protector, so I doubt a surge killed it. It just died. I decided to take a look inside, mostly to see if I had left a disc in the tray. The electronics and mechanical parts look surprisingly solid for a player this cheap. It's a shame the quality control is apparently lacking. When it did work, it was OK, but the motor was pretty noisy. The price may be tempting, but expect to be disappointed in the long run (or short run in some cases).

Temporary/Disposable piece of trash
Bought 2 of these Coby DVD players 4 months ago and neither of them respond to any input, either manually or by remote. The warranty has expired, mail to Coby has produced no results, repair is more costly than the original price. I am stuck. Please help me put this company out of business by not buying ANY of their products. What a COMPLETE rip-off.

Waste of money, even if you get it for $5
I got this unit on sale tfor $25, not so much bcause it was cheap, but because it was small and I don't have a lot of space in my apartment. As far as looks, COBY DVD-233 has little to offer: the plastic exterior looks very cheap and even unpolished in places.
On the first night, I played three audio CDs and one DVD. While playing CDs, there were skips that I had never heard from other CD players with the same CDs.
Next time I tried to use the unit two days later, it wouldn't play anything, with the message "no disc" or "invalid disc."
It is certainly not worth it for me to send it back (for $12) and try to get it repaired. This purchase was a complete waste of money and time, and I will never buy anything that has "COBY" on it.
Stay away from this company. You might get lucky and get a player that works, but then again, you might not.

Another Flawed Unit
Just as the above reviewer, my unit failed after about 2 months. I don't think it is worth the hassle of the $12 return to Coby, except in principal.
Do not buy this junk, unless you only need to use it a few times, then plan on tossing it.

Stopped working after 2 months, $12 fee to fix
This player stopped working after 2 months of very light use. The warranty is 3 months, but you have to ship the DVD player back to Coby and include a $12 money order to cover the shipping back to you. They will promise to ship you another unit in 4-6 weeks. So if you are willing to spend around $20 along with the hassle of getting the broken unit on its way back to Coby, you can spend the next couple of months hoping they actually send you a functional replacement which will last more than a few weeks.
