[+] 6.0 Decent For The Car...But...
I bought this about 5 months ago to entertain my infant son on long car rides. It does a pretty good job...but not great. The unit has frozen on me a few times, thankfully we only use it on long family trips though, so I'm able to climb in the back seat to reset it.

The picture is bright and crisp, and the sound is great. It's a little cumbersome to change out the CD's because of the headrest holder, so I try to put long running disc's in (or I just replay them, my son's too young to know the difference).

If you're looking to use this for anything more then occasional entertainment, or have older children that will be watching movies, I would recommend maybe looking around for something else. While the screen size and picture clarity is wonderful, it does freeze up more often then I'd like...and that's with extremely gentle use. I really don't see this holding up too well for someone who uses it more frequently. Either way...good luck with it!

[+] 4.0 Started out ok, then both units became complete junk!
We bought this and initially loved it. Then a few months passed and we discovered what a piece of junk it was. Sure it comes with a lot of great stuff and it's well priced, but you get what you pay for with this player. We bought the replacement plan and I guess it's good we did because after a few months when the first one wouldn't play anymore, we sent it back and received another one. This one pooped out in a different way, but led to the same result--no longer usable. We had to pay for the shipping to send in the player and we had to re-buy the player from amazon and then be reimbursed. So I suppose we got our moneys worth (?), but now a year or so later and $100 plus the warranty later, we are back where we started--no portable DVD player. Buy at your own risk and don't trust a review from someone who has had it a couple of days. We'll definitely be buying something different this time around.

[+] 2.0 Two Defective Units!
I wonder if these players were good in 2005, but now they're just plain old and don't work anymore. This is 2008! I ordered one and it arrived defective -- no audio. The picture was fine, but no sound anywhere. I ordered a new one and this one had no picture! Unbelievable! Needless to say, I will not be ordering another replacement for this one, I'm finding a different model and brand. Too much work on my part for junky products.

[+] 10.0 Great Picture, Great Sound, Great Accessories, Great Buy!!!
I was hesitant after reading some of the not so favorable reviews on this product, but I went ahead and purchased it anyway. Boy, I am sure glad I did!!! It was a lifesaver on our 1,000 mi trip to MT this summer!!! Our 2 year old daughter was tickled pink that she could watch her favorite videos in the car. We didn't play it constantly, but gave it a pretty good workout. No problems whatsoever! Comes with all the accessories you'll need in a travelling DVD player.

[+] 2.0 Wrong Disc message and screen goes dark
I have bought this player back in March for my 3 y.o.
I was satisfied with it at first. It fits nice in the car.
We only used the product few times.
The DVD will spin the disc for the a minute or two and then display "Wrong Disc" message. After a while the DVD screen flashes and then goes dark. I have called the COBY and ask then to repair it. The said it is out of 90 days warranty and I have to take it to the local repair shop. Which will cost me the same money as a player.
The customer service was rude. I told then that I am not going to buy anything else from them they did not care.

[+] 4.0 Stopped working after 4 hours of use
I bought this to replace the DVD player my kids use in the car. They watched a movie at home and it worked great. We were ALL excited it had two sets of headphones. They used it in the car to watch one movie and it worked fine. Then they went to watch another movie and it stopped playing about 10 minutes into the movie. The screen just froze and nothing would work. We changed DVDs and it gave an error message of "Wrong disc". We tried disc after disc and it never worked again. I was going to get the same player again, b/c I really liked it, but upone further reflection, I think I won't buy this one again.

[+] 2.0 Nothing but junk!!
I bought this unit for my grandaughter. It quit after 6 months. She is 29 years old, so it was not because of abuse to the player. It had a one year warranty on parts, but, guess what!! Coby doesn't stand behind their warranty. She called their customer service with the warranty in hand, and was told that the warranty they had in their computer files was totally different from the one she received with the unit. She also was told that she would be better off just to purchase another one. Also, a repair shop stated that parts are virtually unavailable for Coby products. Please, DO NOT BUY ANYTHING COBY!!! TOTAL JUNK

[+] 6.0 Does NOT play recordable DVD's
The box has a list of supported formats which includes DVD+-R and DVD+-RW, but I have two of these Coby 7050's and neither one will play a recorded DVD. The user manual inside the box does not indicate that it should be supported, although the outside of the box is explicit that they are supported. I have tried 5 discs and they all come up with "Wrong Disc" errors. The player does support Video CD's on a CD-R, though I have problems with VCD's with menus. Auto-play VCDs play correctly, but I was unable to select a title inside a menu. I've only had the players for 1 week, but they seem solid and both work fine. The picture and sound are average or perhaps slightly above average. I purchased these with the 2 year warranty because I do anticipate they will break within the next 2 years and I'll want my money back when they do. Plenty of extras are in the box: 2 sets of headphones, car charger, AC charger, video cable, mounting straps for a headrest (which I haven't tried yet), remote with batteries, and the player battery. I'd rate this a good investment, but not if you need to play recorded DVD's.

[+] 2.0 Very Disappointing
We recieved this product as a Christmas present this past year. It was a great gift because we have a 1 year old and it pacifies her while we drive around town and take trips. I can't say that I was disappointed with the performance for the first 3 months. About the 4th month we started receiving a "Wrong Disc" error. We bought a DVD lens cleaner which seemed to help but continued getting the error about once a week. Last week while we were vacationing, we got the wrong disk error with no recovery. I called COBY and they recommended the disk cleaning. I told them that I already did that. They recommended that I take it to Circuit City and they could fix it. I asked if they would reimburse me for the costs to get it fixed and she said no. They only have a 90 day warranty. How ironic that this product starting acting up on the 4th month of use.

I am very disappointed that COBY doesn't stand behind their products better than this. I will go out and purchase a name brand product that will stand behind their products.

My recommendation is to do the same. DO NOT BUY FROM COBY.

[+] 6.0 Great picture, compact, battery built in
I was very pleased with the screen clarity and size for such a compact player. The battery is impressively part of the machine instead of hanging off the back. The black face adds to the picture's appeal. A substantial list of accessories is included: 2 headphones, a cassette adapter, cigarette light adapter, AC adapter, remote control, AV cables and headrest case. Jody Bissoon

small con- battery life is very long.

[+] 2.0 Wrong Disc Error after 1 month - Seems too common with this product
Had the product only 1 month. Worked great until started getting "Wrong Disc" error. Now the thing won't play any DVD's. Never dropped or exposed to extremes. Stopped working for apparently no reason.

This seems like too common a problem based on my quick scan of other reviews on Amazon.

Now I've got to try to get some service from Coby.....doesn't look like others have had good results with their customer service. Be Warned.

[+] 4.0 It worked for 40 days (Wrong Disc error). Warranty coverage is close to useless.
It worked for 40 days, then got the "Wrong Disc" error. Warranty coverage is close to useless.

Within warranty period: it takes 4-6 weeks, plus you have to send money order for USD$12 in addition to paying for sending it back. If you add what it costs to get the item serviced under warranty (~USD@20) it is 20% or so what you paid for it. That seems pretty high not to mention you have to wait a long time.

Overall, it worked fine for 40days, then even though it is "covered" by warranty, it is too expensive to get it serviced. It is now garbage.

[+] 8.0 Coby Deal
We purchased the Coby Portable Tablet DVD player after returning a folding (laptop style) DVD player to a local store. The Coby has given us all we wanted for the car and more. I read the amazon reviews on it and they convinced me before we got it that it may be what we were looking for because it said there was a head rest cover for mounting the unit. We received it and are very pleased. The player can stand alone with a built in stand or can easily be attached to the head rest on a carseat. It attaches well to the car seat no worries of it falling or flying in an accident. It comes with all the attachments you need for the car, or to plug in at home, a battery (lasts three hours) and battery charger. Two head phones. Only downside I see is that with the screan on the outside of the unit I have to find a good storage bag so it doesn't get scratched... Not much to complain about! Good product, good screen clarity, don't think you can beat the price. Quiet trips with the kid...... priceless! Arrived in less than 9 days.

[+] 2.0 Get the replacement plan
It was great to have these, we liked the additional cables etc... but we bought two of them. The first time they both died, one would not recognize disks, and the LCD went out on the other one - oh, and it wouldn't charge anymore, and the battery swelled up and stretched the case. Halfway through an 8 hour trip with a 1 year old and a 3 year old, and only weeks after the warranty was up. The actually died within the warranty period several times (one only lasted a couple of weeks before bugging out periodically), but started working again, so we couldn't return them, because nobody beleives that your unit 'is' dying. It finally died 3 days after the warranty was up, and despite the previous service calls, COBY seemed happy that it was our problem not theirs.

We made a Coby-enstein of the two, combining the screen of one with the DVD reader and charger of the other. This monstrosity worked well for a few weeks, then got buggy, and now doesn't work periodically. So, I liked them when they worked, but if you really want one, you kind of hope it will just work all the time. No more COBY's for us!!!

[+] 8.0 Life saver
This portable DVD player now gives me sanity on long car trips as it occupies my little one with videos. The sound is appropriate in loudness and of good quality. The picture is excellent. The tablet size is just right-it fits perfectly on the back of the front seat headrest. I have not run out of battery yet. The device is as described in the promotional materials. The product is reasonably priced. My only suggestion for improvement is a flap that would cover (and lock down) over the operational buttons to discourage toddler curiosity.

[+] 2.0 Not worth the low price
Purchased this unit from Amazon just prior to Christmas. It crapped out end of March (just after the 90 warranty, of course). Now fails to recognize any DVDs.
Coby support has been wholly unsympathetic. They indicated they used to make exceptions to the 90 day warranty, but this exercise was discontinued (can't imagine it was because the products were so good). I couldn't understand how a company won't stand behind a product longer then 3 measily months.

I also purchased a Coby Digital picture frame for a Christmas present. It came out of the box with a black line right thru the screen. Amazon refunded me for this, not Coby.

All-in-all, 0 for 2 for Coby products this holiday season.
Here's the advice, spend the extra $50 or so and get quality.

[+] 8.0 great product for the price
This was purchased as a replacement and i was very pleased. My grandchildren have no problem operating it (they are 4 & 2) and the picture quality is great. The product description leaves out that it comes with the case to hang on the car headrest and headphones, etc. The only drawback to this product is unlike my original it is not able to change movies without taking it of the case. But that is minor. For the price it is worth it.

This product is a TOTAL junk. I purchased and had to return it the next day because the screen did not show any image. I made the mistake to change it for the same item. [+] 8.0 Excellent quality for price
I researched for a very long time for tablet-style dvd players and these are the best priced ones I could find. They are excellent quality and I haven't had any problems with them. They came with headphones, although uncomfortable ones, which I wasn't expecting. I love that this attaches to the headrest and I use it almost everyday for my 2 year old. My only complaint, is that there isn't any way to turn off the dvd player and have it start where you left off. You either have to leave it on, which runs down the battery, or just turn it off and start your movie all over when you get back in. But overall, this is an excellent product!

[+] 2.0 Changes Made for Poor Performance
We purchased a TFT Tablet-Style DVD player for our daughter to watch while riding in our Jeep Wrangler three years ago. It worked great. We even worked up a suspension rig for it so she could watch it on four wheel drive trails. We moved it to the headrest of our FJ Cruiser when we purchased that and it still worked like a champ. We used it every time we were in the car. We used it in hotels, took it on several airplane trips, on the train. There came a point(understandably)where the rechargable battery wouldn't hold a charge anymore, and the screen was getting scratched so we decided after three years to purchase a new one. EVERY DVD WE PUT IN IT SKIPPED. It was very frustrating. We did return it for a full refund, but miss the original desperately. There was some type of change in the vendor because when you turned the unit on a new name besides COBY showed up, it was maybe VOSTROS (I apologize I don't have the unit any longer to reference). This was the only difference I could detect in the product. Did we get a lemon??? Not willing to try another one at this point. Even though it did hold a charge for hours!

[+] 2.0 HANDS DOWN the WORST product I have EVER spent my hard earned money on
I can't begin to explain my disappointment with the quality of this COBY DVD player. We spent $100 of our extremely limited supply of money on this product as a gift to our kids. It worked for a couple weeks. It had been strapped securely to the headrest of our vehicle the entire time. No misuse, no mishandling what-so-ever. It just started saying "wrong disc" every time you try to play a dvd. To me, that doesn't even make sense. "wrong disc"????? What does that even mean? It's the same disc that worked every other time we used it. Or maybe it's just that the player scratched the dvd - it sounds like it's done that for many other users.

This is without question the WORST purchase we have ever made. This company is BAD. They have done nothing to reconcile this. They take NO responsibility for robbing their customers blind.

PLEASE - PLEASE - DO NOT EVEN THINK OF WASTING YOUR MONEY ON THIS PIECE.

Spend a few extra dollars and buy something that will actually play a dvd.

The biggest waste of $100 I have EVER spent.

I wouldn't recommend this unit to ANYONE.

[+] 8.0 Still plays DVDs after 18 months, a few problems
We purchased this DVD player for a road trip in June of 2006. My son was almost two years old and we drove the coast of California. We let our two year old (now 3 and a half) use this DVD player. He was extremely rough with it over the last 18 months and it's still playing DVDs. I did not expect much from it, but this DVD player it worth what I paid. I have noticed the buttons are not always responsive.

[+] 10.0 Dropped it twice and it's still going after 20 months.
Like the lead reviewer says, I can't believe this is the same company that sold poor qual tape decks in 1989. I love it. It looks great and came with more accessories than you can shake a stick at. As my headline says, we have dropped it (at least) twice. The second time was off the kitchen table onto the parquet. Amazingly, there is no perceptible change in the device. The only thing that happened was that a tiny tab broke off. It was a rather important tab - it told the player that it was closed. But I jammed a plastic bead into the slot, and now it thinks its always closed. Another plus: the battery still routinely gives us two-three hours.

[+] 6.0 Ok for the price..I guess
I purchased this dvd player since it was one of the only ones that come in a tablet format. it is very uncomfortable to change the dvd's since you have to take it out of the carrying case. The one that i got did not want to turn on so i returned it and i received another one from amazon within 2 days. it works fine just sometimes if you press too many buttons at once it will freeze and the screen will go white and you have to turn it off then on again. the movies take really long to load. other than that the screen looks great and the sound is great specially driving in the freeway. i thought it would be a much better quality than what it is. It looks like if you drop it, even on a carpet it will stop working. Its ok for the money. if you want something that is going to last a long time, look somewhere else. Hope this helped

[+] 2.0 Just worked for 30 Days!!!
Hi, at the beginning the DVD worked fine, I really used it like twice a week in the car to entertain my son, after 20 days it started malfunctioning sending a wrong disk error occasionally, after a month suddenly it stop playing any DVD at all. I wrote an e-mail to the manufacturer and until now I haven't received any answer, I tried to return it to Amazon but since the 30 days return policy has expired I can't. I tried to return it knowing that a discount will be applied because it's after 30 days... and I can't. So, you can be paying a $100 bucks for a one month DVD player. I DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL THIS ITEM.

[+] 10.0 I LOVE THIS!!
I fly a lot and love tucking this DVD unit into my carry-on bag. I usually rent a few favorite movies before I leave home, then watch during the flight. (I can usually see one full movie before the battery starts to fade...I plan on buying another battery to take along with me.) I have also loved having this unit in my hotel room. It even has dual earphone jacks so my husband & I can listen & watch together in bed, and not wake up the house when visiting out of town family. I've taken it on car trips and plugged it into the cigarette lighter, too! The captions are great (if needed), the quality is wonderful! The only drawback for me is that the symbols on the remote are not obvious....but it wasn't a big deal. I used a Sharpie pen and wrote "Play/Pause, Next/Prev. FR/FF" along the side so I could figure it out quickly. I can't say enough about this DVD player! Highly recommended!

[+] 4.0 NIce while it lasted
As I have gone back and read more reviews, I realized I should have read more of the negative reviews instead of just one or two from each good and bad, then saw there were more good reviews so decided to give it a shot since the price was right at the time.

I bought this pretty much for my husband to take on his Navy Deployments. I am glad we tested it out before he actually had to leave. Like many others our unit lasted barely 6 months. I chucked it up as a loss since hubby got a laptop. But We used in the car a few times to entertain our little one and hooked to the TV. After awhile the screen turned out and the remote quit working. Which was fine at that point I just decided to leave it hooked to my bedroom TV. Well after a little while of that the discs quit spinning at all! No error messages, no picture, no producing sound, the remote and player buttons no longer worked.

So I say wait an extra payday or 2 and save the money for a better unit.

[+] 8.0 Really good for travel!
This is a really good portable dvd for the car. The sound is great. With one exception. It's difficult to slide the on/off button when the dvd is in the portable bag used to attach to headrest. The on/off button is actually covered. Other than that, I really like it and would recommend it.

[+] 10.0 For all who get "wrong disc error"
I read forums online and here is one person that I found with a solution:

"I have a coby as well and recently gave me wrong disk error as well , with any burnt disk , that previously used to play . it would play oringinal disk . i eventually found this to be the problem =/
the bit that actually spins the disk can actually move to an incorrect position , more likely than not downwards , so putting the disk too close to the lens. I found by having the top level with the steel pin thingy ,( it seems not to be attached and can slid up and down after siome use) it would again read all disks . Eventually i super glued this in place . Supplier said it was caused by misabuse so would not cover by warrenty."

Here's a response from another reviewer:

"Luke, you are a genius. I put a paperclip behind the "bit that actually spins the disk" to pull it forward -- now it works.

Absolutely nothing else worked at all. Thank you! "

[+] 2.0 Poor Quality from a Poor Company
Buyer BEWARE of this product and Coby. I did my diligent research on Amazon and other websites for a decent quality portable DVD player and ended up purchasing 2 for our SUV. The Coby DVD7050 product fit the bill from a cost, functionality and accessory perspective. I was warry of the quality however and read some of the Amazon reviews prior to purchase. In the end I took the leap that a decent percentage of these would be okay. Initially the product functioned as advertised. After 3 weeks of intermittent use, these little gems started reporting "Wrong Disc" errors on the screen. The DVDs I had been using were fine, some brand new. What's more I treated these units like babies; they weren't scratched, dropped or otherwise physically abused. I called Coby service to ask for trouble shooting and assistance. I got this rather cocky gentlemen by the name of Darrel (ID#3005) to "help". He told me to buy a laser lense cleaning kit at my local electronics store and pull the battery for an hour to drain the capacitors on the circuit boards. If this didn't work, I could return the products to Coby's repair shop paying for shipping there and an $18 money order for their processing and return shipment. MONEY ORDER! Are you kidding me? This has pure profit for Coby written all over it. I happen to be a Mechanical Engineer at a large hightec American company working in quality on electronic products. Needless to say, I understand how both the hardware works and shoddy customer service at a half baked company.

Not being very optimistic of this solution, I tried draining the caps. Same error occurred. Then I inspected the disc read assembly for debris with special attention to the top of the laser lense. It appeared clean. I would have tried the laser lense cleaning kit had I not been under Amazon's return policy window. Thank God for Amazon! I called Amazon, returned the units and got my money back. I'm sorry to those who didn't. I read a few more of the 1 star reviews and found that several of the folks never got a functioning unit back from Coby's chop shop. I won't ever, EVER, be purchasing a Coby product again. Congratulation Darrel and the Coby R&D department! By the way Darrel DOA means Dead On Arrival. No, It's not a Colorado thing, it's a quality thing.

After more extensive research it does appear that even the big name portable DVD player manufacturers have some quality issues. I guess these portable DVD players are inexpensive for a reason. Even though I am fundamentality opposed to the concept, I will entertain an extended service plan in the future.

[+] 2.0 Terrible!
We used this DVD player 3-4 times, and it no longer works. But, since it was past the 90 day warranty, Colby won't do anything for us. It was very frustrating to only have it last this long.

[+] 2.0 NO!!! DO NOT BUY! BROKE IN ONE WEEK!
DO NOT BUY THIS MODEL FOR ANY REASON. I will never by Coby anything again based on this experience.

I bought it. At home it looked snazzy, in black and "intensive, sporty use" rubber coating. The salesperson at J&R had assured me that this model was "a bit more tougher" and was more appropriate for use by children.

However, the one I bought never survived to the point that it would be tested by my child. In less than a week, it simply burst at the seams, and I could see the internal components, the guts. There is no "welding," just badly designed parts, i.e., snaps that don't stay snapped together. The thing just spontaneously burst open!

This item sure looks like an example of good design. A tablet, how clever. The picture quality was pretty good. However, it could not withstand extremely gentle, in home handling because of utterly defective manufacture and/or hopelessly cheap, inferior materials. Design or manufacturing defect, either way, what a piece of junk.

I am bitter that I had thrown away the receipt and box too soon.

I went back to J&R and bought the heavy, all metal Toshiba SD 1700 which cost $50 or so more than this junk Coby model. Dorky looking, but my, how sturdy! It just works the way it's supposed to, you don't have to worry.

Coby is BAD, EVIL, UNTESTED. Never again.

[+] 2.0 sadly disappointed
This is the second Coby I have owned. I bought the first one a year ago. It lasted about 6 months and then died on me. It said wrong disc. I had the 2 year warranty and so I got another one. This last one didn't even last 1 month before it started saying wrong disc. I really like the dvd player when it is working. I am very sad that it quit. I am not sure which one I am going to get to replace it, but I sure hope it works longer then this one. If you do decide to buy this one definately get the 2 year replacement package!!

[+] 10.0 Best Tablet style DvD player!
I bought this to use at the gym, and it's been great. The size is perfect for placing on the machines where books and magazines usually rest. It's not as thick as many other tablet styles I've seen. Best of all, it's been sturdy and works great even after 2 years of use! Add that together with simple controls and a low price... it equals a can't miss DVD player!

[+] 10.0 A very good buy
I have been using since almost a month. This product feels of very high quality. The picture quality is very good as well as the sound. I am using it in my car. It helped me keeping my 1 yr old busy in his car seat.

[+] 8.0 Quirky....but good
The price on this unit is great and I have to say the picture quality and the sound quality / volume is very good.

My only complaints are: 1 - that the unit occassionally shuts down. This has only happened twice in 4 14hr trips. I will say this wreaks havoc with a 5yr old at 75mph lol. 2 - the case that the unit goes in that then velcros to a headrest is a bit cheaply made.

What I will say is that there is ALOT included in the package. It has everything you need in one box. Headphones, power supplies, cassette adapter..all of it.

Overall I would recommend the unit.

[+] 8.0 Coby TF-DVD7050 7" TFT Portable Tablet-Style Portable DVD Player REVIEW
This is a very nice machine for the price. I was able to purchase it on sale for under one hundred dollars. I have found two problems with this player - first, it is kind of loud. I wish it would be a silent player and second, the volume isn't all that loud. I guess they are hoping that most people will use the two sets of ear plugs that come with this player. The carrying case that comes with this model, lacks a bit and doesn't really protect the unit. On the plus side, it has a rubber type bottom which is nice and the value for the money is very high. I checked out over twenty different players and feel this player was the best of them all for the price. I would buy this unit again.

[+] 2.0 Absolute rubbish
As is the case with so many, we wanted to save money on a portable unit for the kids to watch while on extended road trips. I guess we've used it maybe ten times in about two years. Now all we get is a blue screen although the disk plays sound. Are we being too demanding to expect a DVD player to last longer? I've read other reviews where folks got zero help from the manufacturer so we'll not waste our time. This item is just typical of the modern manufacturing mentality of "planned obsolescence" where products are made only good enough to just barely slip through the warranted period and then fall apart, leaving the purchaser no choice but to buy another unit that won't last any longer... ad nauseam... ad infinitum. Save whatever you might have spent on this crappy Coby DVD player and buy books.

[+] 4.0 Cute, but doesn't last
My 3 year old son received this as a gift for Christmas last year. I loved all the features, great sound, great picture, nice for trips to visit family two states away. The only thing I didn't like is that I had to take the player out of the case to change the disc. Would have been nice to have some way of rigging it so I didn't have to completely take it apart. Unfortunately, it only lasted about 6 months. Brand new DVDs started reporting "Wrong disc" after playing for only a few minutes. Now it constantly freezes up, or reads "Wrong disc" and won't play at all. Maybe it's just too sensitive and needs to spend all it's time indoors...not out on the highway? I will not buy Coby again after this.

[+] 4.0 Stay Away From Coby!
Although it feels like it's build quality is good, it really isn't. I've had two of these players over the past 1 1/2 years. I used them at home for my child (usually playing out to a TV) and when we're on the road (a few times a year). Both broke down in a similar fashion, the controls became inoperable. Of course the warranty (90 days) had expired. Again, although this item feels like it's solidly built it always craps out. The only reason I purchased this twice was I figured the first was a fluke and it really is inexpensive compared to the others out there. I guess you could look at it as an item that needs to be repurchased every 6 to 10 months. What a shame. Perhaps it's worth spending the extra dollars for a better made item.
