Product Specifications

Moving to Los Angeles after an unproductive stint in Nashville, Kentucky-born Dwight Yoakam made a name for himself by reviving the more robust honky-tonk traditions of the Bakersfield Sound--a bold contrast with Music City's assembly-line approach. In 1984, his independently released six-song EP, Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc., added to the buzz and helped land him on Warner Bros./Reprise. Now, twenty years later comes The Very Best of Dwight Yoakam, a superb single-disc distillation of the four-CD box, Reprise Please Baby: The Warner Bros. Years. With 20 tracks spanning his recording career and sequenced in chronological order, the set rolls along with gusto and verve. While not covering every one of his releases (the Christmas and covers releases are omitted, for example), there are some singles and soundtrack entries that fall nicely into place. --David Greenberger

[+] 10.0 Great
I started paying attention to Dwight Yoakam not long ago. I think he is great and what country should be.

[+] 10.0 This is the one I listen too when I'm driving.
Oh yeah...and I sing along. This is sophisticated country. This CD will please your senses and awaken your imagination. If you think you don't like country music...listen to this one and you'll think again.

[+] 8.0 All his best stuff
Not that much into C&W despite living in Texas for over 30 years. To me, most of these acts all sound (and look) the same. Dwight Yoakam really is different. Good songwriter, unique style and takes his que from performers like Buck Owens who paved the way for him. Lots of good cuts on here: "a Thousand Miles from Nowhere", a great cover of Elvis' "Suspicious Minds" Well worth the money.

[+] 10.0 Not bad...
This is full of MOST of his greatest hits and some good ones I have never heard before... I listen to it constantly, and now my kids love it as well. The only criticism is that there are a few songs missing... Pocket of a Clown, Claudette, Always Late with your kisses.... where are these songs???? I thought this was a greatest hits CD?

[+] 10.0 A Great Introduction to Dwight
It's difficult to choose just 20 "best" Dwight songs, although I think this CD does an admirable job. It's a pretty broad overview of his career until 2003, and it is the CD that caused me to start digging Dwight. I had always preferred rock music to country, but that was until I heard Dwight. He covers some Elvis, Queen and Cheap Trick on here in his own inimitable style. Plus his own songs have a lot of rock aesthetic in them, such as "Guitars, Cadillacs" and "Fast As You." There are some true "country" gems as well, like "Honky Tonk Man" and "Streets of Bakersfield" (with Buck Owens, whom everybody loves!!). Beautiful ballads as well, e.g. "I Sang Dixie" and "You're The One." Overall, a really nice compilation and I heartily recommend it, especially as an introduction to Dwight's music. It does have my favorite Dwight song, "It Only Hurts When I Cry," which he co-wrote with the late, great Roger Miller. That said, it's still missing some other must-hear songs like "Miner's Prayer," "Fair to Midland" and "A Place to Cry."

[+] 10.0 Great for traffic
It was a nice mixture of songs. Dwight's singing has certainly made my commute to and from work more entertaining.

[+] 10.0 The perfect set
This really is the Very Best of Dwight Yoakam. I'd have picked almost exactly the same 20 songs if I had to pick 20, these really are the best of the best and not a weak (or even average) one in the lot. These songs are the reason Dwight is in my top 10 favorite artists of all time along with Lyle Lovett, Lucinda Williams, Robert Earl Keen, Jim Croce, and others.

If you are interesting in buying your first Dwight CD, this is absolutely positively the best possible way to start. If you just want a great collection from his other albums, again it's great. Can't lose.

[+] 10.0 Some Really Good Music
I listen to a lot of country music, but I always go back to Dwight's music. There's just something about it that's addictive. This CD has some of his best.

[+] 10.0 Now This is Country Music
Dwight is a true Country Music Legend already. His music is the kind of country music I would be forced to listen to in the back seat of my parents Pall Mall smoke filled Cadillac riding around the lake on Sunday afternoons. As good as the music I would hear on Hee Haw and later at the "Rosebush" on Saturday nights, kissing toothless woman on the cheek for their birthday. Awesome !!

[+] 10.0 Every song on this CD is great!
Dwight Yoakam is truly great! He and Steve Earle are the only two CURRENT country artists worth listening to, in my opinion. If you want one CD with all of your favorites by Dwight Yoakam, this CD has all of his best songs. It is truly worth buying.

[+] 10.0 Little Ways
I first ran across Dwight Yoakam as the menacing boyfriend in Billy Bob Thorton's Slingblade. I thought he was great in the role. It was much later in Asleep at the Wheel's tribute to Bob Wills that I found out he could also sing. He sang San Antonio Rose on the CD and I was hooked on his voice. This greatest hits CD is the first one of many that I have bought. It gives a broad spectrum of this man's talent. His voice has an inflection in it that is irresistable to me. This CD of his is always in my truck. "Little Ways" is my favorite on the CD and I have danced the cumbia to the "Streets of Bakersfield". YOU RULE DWIGHT!

[+] 10.0 You cant have the very best of Yoakam
This cd was my first introduction to Dwight. It made me buy every one of his studio albums. He is an amazing artist and has one of the greatest voices in the history of country music. I highly recommend his cds Long Way Home, Gone, and his acoustic cd. Excellent album, excellent artist.

[+] 10.0 Dwight Yoakam Rocks!
Okay, so I know that Dwight is country, but I still think he Rocks! I'm not a big country fan nowadays, but I like the old country like Willie, Waylon, Patsy, Johnny & Merle. Dwight, even though he's not old country, has that mix of old country style and rockabilly that really gets things going! This is a must have album if you are a Dwight fan at all, and if you like old country with a kick, this is the album for you.

[+] 10.0 An unexpected Gem !
Recently the music industry has begun to release greatest hits CD's with, well, the greatest hits for a change. And usually filling up a CD. So I have been back filling my CD collection with CD's of artists and bands from the 80's and 90's that I have followed in the press, but not purchased their music. This CD is awesome. I cannot think of a time that I have purchased a CD that I have enjoyed every song. The musicianship on Dwight's recordings is Very, Very good as is the material. And Dwight himself is exceptional. I would recommend this CD to any Rock, Pop, or country fan that has not heard Dwight Yoakam. I cannot decide whether to get the box set, or just get each original Cd.

[+] 10.0 Movie background music
As with most of my music cd purchases I heard a particular song or music as background music in a particular movie I have seen which I liked very much and marveled how well the music greatly enhanced the particular emotion of the movie or emotion of a single scene. Having said this the Very Best of Dwight Yoakam I really like and playing his cd with the memory of the movie really enhances the experience. "
