Dymo LabelWriter 400 Turbo
I use several of these to print barcoded product labels. We print a large number of labels monthly and have never experienced a problem with these printers. The print is clear and always readable with our barcode scanners.

Good Product But With Software Shortcomings
Generally speaking I am a big fan of DYMO label makers and have used them for years. But the 400 is my first foray into postage, which is why I bought it.
Generally performance is good but the product has limitations based on its software. Specifically the limitation is that postage amounts are based on a drop-down menu, rather than allowing the user to simply type in the postage amount due. Drop-downs do not allow for the vast variety of postage options out there, such as surcharge for square envelopes on international letters.
Example: you want to send a square envelope to Germany. The drop-down only has options for sending rectangular envelopes to Mexico, Canada, and the rest of the world. So you're stuck. Either you send it without the surcharge postage amount (and it comes back to you) or you have to print out a guzillion 1-cent stamps, which you would never do because of the cost of the labels. If the dang think would simply allow you to type in the amount of postage you need, this wouldn't be an issue. The only way for me to get around the international surcharge issue is to use the $1.17 stamp for 3-ounce packages, but this means the post office unnecessarily eats a free three cents every time I send a square envelope to Europe. Really dumb.
I would say this product is ideal for anybody dealing with largely domestic postage but becomes awkward when dealing with a largely international audience. DYMO can make this a perfect product by allowing users to type in their amount postage amounts.

Decent hardware and software
Unit works relatively well, I had to run the installer a number of times to get it to work correctly on Windows Vista. The software seems fine and indicates it is supported on the Dymo site, but the installer is antiquated and needs help. Once I finally got it installed it works fine.

Amazing device - just works
We purchased the 400 Turbo with the intent to use it to replace our outdated mailing label system that required us to keep multiple copies of labels on hand. The reasons we purchased the 400 Turbo were 1) QuickBooks integration and 2) speed of printing.
I took the printer out of the box at 8:30am and had it integrated with QuickBooks and printing our logo and return address on every label in under 45 minutes. The printer itself was working faster than that.
Highly recommended.

Great Label Printer - Software is So So.
We bought this for our office to quickly print labels for signs we create. The printer was faster than we expected! It blazes through label after after label. The breadth of different types and sizes of labels is also great, as it allows for growth and diversity.
The included software is the only downside to this printer. Ugh, no ability to create a box or text and CTRL-click-drag to copy those elements. There's also no way to set guidelines or snap-to areas to properly line elements up. You actually have to "eyeball" your design to line things up, which is amateurish at best.
You can use more powerful software (like Photoshop) to design and print your labels but it's slower and I've found the print quality is actually lower when you try to use software other than the one included with the printer.
All in all, it's too good and fast of a printer to let the poor quality of the included software bring me down. I still recommend this printer for fast reliable and versatile label printing.

Labels Yes . . Postage No
Pleased with the ease of formatting and printing labels. Very fast and the quality is very good. Easy installation and set up.
However, I was not happy to see that stamps run about $.08 per blank, meaning your $.41 stamp is actually costing you $.49. Also, as other buyers noted, you cannot pick the exact amount of postage you might require, unless it is one of the presets in the program. The solution would be to print two stamps coming close to, but exceeding, the exact postage required on larger, heavier envelopes. Of course, this means you are now using two blanks for $.16, and paying more postage than you should have to. These are probably not big draw backs for the casual postage user, but if you do any mass mailings or mail a number of larger items, the costs can add up.
There should definitely be more than one provider for the blank stamps to have some competition and bring the cost down. And, you should certainly be able to choose the exact amount of postage you require.

An Amazing Printer
This is a great printer. You can pretty much create a label to look like anything you want by selecting desired fonts and inserting graphics. It's easy to install and set up. When I had a question on how to print a large number of addresses, which had to be pulled off a spreadsheet, I called Dymo and they were very friendly and helpful to tell me how to do it. I highly recommend this and it's a great price.
This has saved me so much time over going to the post office. I can mail everything right from home now. It's great! Easy to use & not that difficult to set up.

This is a great addition to a small office
Ive had the Dymo LabelWriter400 Turbo for over a year now. It works great. Im glad we found it. It's a lot easier than the old method of printing an envelope in the printer- which didnt work well at all- or printing the name on a label sheet. This printer creates and spits out a self-adhesive label very quickly and easily with no fuss, adds the correct zip code/street name and postal bar code, and makes letters look very professional. The software it comes with is simple and straightforward. It has a thermal printer and requires no ink refills. You can creat simple address labels, postage for packages, return address, and large shipping labels with custom logos, graphics, etc. There are dozens of label choices. The labels are cheap- especially since many vendors sell identical label replacement rolls for 40% less than the Dymo brand labels. If you mail 5-15 letters a day as we do, this is great way to go.

An Indispensable Tool for Any Frequent Mailer
As an avid ham radio operator, I sometimes send out dozens of QSL cards in the mail on a given day. Being able to quickly and easily address them makes my hobby much more enjoyable. I bought this LabelWriter after previously having owned its predecessor. That label printer gave me a long, reliable product life, so I didn't hesitate to buy another similar Dymo product. I haven't been disappointed. This printer prints quickly, quietly, and reliably, and is bundled with excellent label printing software. Labels are readily available. What more could I ask?

Good printer and good service.
The first unit that we received failed after 3 days. Fortunately, a quick call to Dymo's support line had a replacement printer to us in just a few days. So far it's working as advertised.
I wish the printer had an on/off switch. This unit is always on. If you have to reset the printer, which we did several times when the first one failed, you must pull the power plug. The power plug is very inconvenient to access.

Good hardware but terrible software
The software for the labelwriter is truly awful and some of it damages other applications. If you use Microsoft Word with other applications that share startup manipulation of the Tools menu, you will find that the DYMO startup file, DYMOWordAddin.dot, will destroy all the other starup commands of applications such as Adobe pdfwriter, Endnote, and others. These applications will no longer appear in the menu, but the DYMO application will. This is doubly insulting because the DYMO addon is itself dysfunctional. The only safe way to create labels is to use the DYMO label application, which works reasonably well, although it too is unable to position graphics and writing with the necessary flexibility.
If you run into problems after installation, find the word startup folder and remove any addins with DYMO in them. This is a cross platform problem that involves Win XP and Mac OSX. Once the DYMO files are removed, Word returns to proper function.
The software is terrible, but the hardware is excellent. Although the labels are rather expensive, the printing is clear and crisp and one has access to all of the fonts on your computer. If is hoped that DYMO will put a greater effort into the software in the future so that their total product is as good as the hardware they sell.

Love this little label maker
This label maker is awesome, however, the software seems to have interferred with the ability of word perfect to automatically send envelopes to my HP deskjet 6122.
I love that we're able to network this label maker..something we could not do with our SLP.
So far we've used only one size of lables, but I love the idea that we'll be able to use other sizes.
I love it. It is so quick and clean. Have had no problems with it at all. A bonus to be able to print stamps from it as well. If I was to buy another, Id by the duo, so I wouldn't have to keep switching the tapes from labels to stamps, but otherwise a terrific little gadget.

Buyer Beware if you ship packages
The Dymo LabelWriter 400 Turbo works great. What doesn't work well is the "No-Monthly-Fee DYMO Stamps(tm) postage labels." Everything works great until you want to purchase postage for your package you are shipping. With the free software provided you can print a wide range of pre-selected postage amounts, but you cannot print a specific dollar amount. To ship your Priority Mail package with the correct amount of postage, you will still have to go to the Post Office or purchase a $9.95 monthly service plan. Of course, this is not explained to you until after you purchase the unit and set up your account. In my opinion the "No-Monthly-Fee DYMO Stamps(tm) postage labels" is clearly bait and switch. If you ship a few packages a month, the monthly service charge is not worth the cost.
The Dymo is a big improvement over the dot matrix printer it replaced. The labels look better and are easier to read. We saved $80.00 getting it though Amazon.

If you bought the old Dymo Labelwriter 330 Turbo you will be disopointed
I have used the old Labelwriter 330 turbo, for our veterinain praktices for 3 years, when finally the first one broke down last month the choice for the new Labelwriter 400 turbo was a no brainer atleast we tought. How disapointed did we get.
First of all is was nolonger possible to put the labelwriter off, when we went home (not good for environment). Then it became clear that it was no faster then the old Labelwriter 330 turbo and even worse it pulls the label forth and back before printing, which makes changes of labels gettting stuck in the machine very high (which happend to us a lot). Also when printing to it from another computer it stops just before the end, then after a second pushes the last peace of the label true. Which means for us that we pull the label of the machine to soon and then it gets stuck in error mode. The software has lots of problems, for example if you repress bad labels in the software it won't print at all. My advise look for a diverend labelwriter!

Ok for light casual use
At first I thought this was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Then I had to keep switching labels to print postage and mailing labels. If you just need something for casual labeling this printer is great. Very easy to use - in the marketing material of Geico, "So easy a cave man can do it". Otherwise get the Turbo Duo.

Postage When I Need It!
I purchased the LabelWriter 400 Turbo and then read the reviews. I was a bit scared that I had purchased a lemon. However, it arrived today and I couldn't be happier.
Setup was easy for both the LabelWriter and Endicia Stamps. I printed my first stamp within 10 minutes of opening the box. It took 2 tries for the machine to align the stamp labels properly but after that it's on target. Notice, I said the machine aligned the labels; I did not have to do anything except for ask it to print a test label. Yes, you can print test labels both in the setup and on the Endicia site before you actually print your postage.
Endicia offers a large variety of denominations for stamps. If you need a larger denomination, it is not necessary to purchase multiple 39 cent stamps, just combine larger denominations. If you need media mail, buy that denomination and then Write Media Mail on the envelope. Don't make it harder than it has to be.
The LabelWriter has a 2 year warranty and that should be sufficient to replace anything that goes wrong. After 2 years, I should hope that the company is innovative enough to have improved on this product.
I almost bought this machine a few months back but I walked away. I am so glad that I own it now and that Dymo has partnered with Endicia to offer postage without a monthly service fee.

Deceptive marketing at its finest
The one and only reason I purchased this label printer was for the highly touted Dymo Stamps feature, supposedly giving you the ability to print your own postage stamps onto thermal postage labels for no monthly fee, only the cost of the printer and the thermal label refills. According to the Dymo Stamps website, Dymo Stamps gives you the ability to "Print Exactly the Amount of Postage you Need" and "Eliminate the Need for Costly Postal Meters." What the consumer is not told upfront is that these "precise" amounts of postage can only be in denominations of the Dymo Stamps software's choosing, not any amount you want. In fact, the only postage denominations that can be printed are those already available in stamp form at the post office, basically just your run-of-the-mill $0.39 stamps, $4.05 Priority Mail stamps, and postcard stamps. This software also does not give you the capability to print postage for Parcel Post, Media Mail, or Express Mail, and doesn't allow you to add additional postage for services like insurance or certified mail at all. How this saves you any trouble over buying stamps from the post office is beyond me. Conveniently, you can only overcome all of these limitations by subscribing to Endicia (Dymo Stamps' backbone provider) for a monthly fee. Heck, you can't even go to an office supply store to buy the thermal postage label refills that you need to print postage on; they can only be ordered online through a link in the Dymo Stamps software. Especially given the fact that even the least expensive Dymo Stamps capable LabelWriter model is over $100, this will NOT save you any money in postage, will NOT save you any time, and ordering stamps online from USPS (or getting them from the local post office) is just as convenient, if not more convenient, than ordering the stupid thermal refills online from Dymo and waiting for them to arrive. Thankfully, Amazon is great at accepting returns.

Great once you get it working...
I spent a long time figuring out why it wasn't working right. If you have problems with it not working at all, use the customer support at Dymo and search for USB or however you connected. It will then give instructions on how to reload the drivers which worked great. Also, make sure your label roll is TIGHT on the spool. Mine was a little loose and that really fouled it up. Now that I have it set up right it is great. You can add graphics and such to your labels. The labels also come in other colors.

I love it so far
So far so good. Very fast printing with excellent text quality. The software is very easy to use. I just hope it lasts longer than my Dymo LabelWriter 300 which died after 3 years of normal use. This printer uses an external power supply which is an improvement over the model 300 which used an internal supply that failed.

Beware reliability of power supply (based on earlier model 330)
I have been a big fan of these printers. I own one vintage unit from when they were CoStar LabelWriters, and 2 LabelWriter 330 units. I still love the functionality, BUT ... now both of my 330s (one at home, one in the office) have suffered power supply failures. Dymo's solution is to send them back for a $75 repair (each). That's a large fraction of the purchase price. The power supplies lived through the warranty period, but not much longer ... so the calculation you must make is whether a unit that lives just about that long is worth the purchase price.
It is possible, of course, that current models are more reliable. Or not.

Beware of DYMO Stamps
I purchased one of these printers in order to make use of the DYMO/Endicia joint venture dubbed "DYMO Stamps" because I was under the impression that doing so would save me a lot of trips to the post office without a lot of exorbitant monthly fees. I got taken.
They very cleverly prevent you from running their DYMO Stamps application at all until you actually purchase and connect one of the three most expensive printers DYMO manufactures, thereby ensuring that you will never see just how horrendously crippled and useless it ultimately is.
You can't print any denomination of postage you like or require, you must choose from a list of about ten options, and needless to say, those options are all just 39 cent increments; nothing you couldn't accomplish with a roll of stamps for less money and less hassle. Heaven forbid you should need to send a Priority package that weighs 1lb 2oz, it simply cannot be done, so you pretty much have to go to the post office for everything anyway. The only real difference is that now you have a $150 gizmo on your desk that consumes $20 rolls of paper with a pretty blue light on it.
And what's worse, the printer itself didn't even work very well. It was incredibly loud, and had a really difficult time handling graphics; everything was horribly streaked and text was nigh-illegible. I got better performance from dot-matrix printers 20 years ago.
If you need to print shipping labels, get yourself a cheap HP LaserJet and a huge pack of generic labels instead of this heap. If you need to print postage, go to Pitney Bowes and don't fund Endicia's shady little operation.

Very useful tool to have at your side
I bought a Dymo 400 Turbo several years ago (also at Amazon) and decided to get another one for a separate business computer. There were some really nice improvements in the equipment and the software. Big compartment for forms is big enough to just drop a roll in without putting on spool which saves time. Also, the form feed button on the front is new which is a fast easy way to align forms to make ready for use.
I highly recommend this very practical product.

Very Good Printer for Home Use
Does every as advertised. I had no problem installing or running this printer. The software included is sufficient for printing many types of labels. The only gripes I have is finding various labels, even Dymo has a back order on labels and the cost of spare spools ($10.00 each) to simply changing label rolls. Still overall it is a good little machine for the home or home office.

Not compatible with other labels
We have been very disapointed with this printer. If you plan to use your own labels with it, forget it! This printer requires that the labels have a small hole between them, so that the printer's sensor recognizes the end of each label. Unfortunately, our labels don't have a hole between them. When we called Dymo, they told us we could only use Dymo labels, they apologized and said that they didn't know why this wasn't advertised with the product.

Dymo hid this information from their customers hoping to monopolize on the label market. I would not recommend buying from them!

Back in the day, I had 8 Costar LabelWriter Turbos, they were incredible. Dymo can't seem to get the USB interface right. On EVERY computer I hook one up to, I get garbled printing and can't every seem to get a label to print reliably. I think they've sold out, started manufacturing in China and what was once a terrific product is a complete piece of junk. 55 labels per minute, yes 55 WASTED labels per minute. I would be please with just ONE good label per minute. Strangely, I have this problem with all Dymo USB LabelWriters on all computers I hook them up to, yet there is no reference to it on their pathetic knowlege (or lack there of) base. Stamps.com, gimme a break. Another way to suck bucks out of your wallet. Is it really that hard to put a stamp on an envelope? I would rather get what I paid for, a label printer.

Great! Saves time & space!
I have been using Stamps.com for my online business for about 2 years. Up till now I have been printing postage using a standard laser printer. Using this method I had to load individual sheets to print just 1 label, and often had paper jams, which sometimes resulted in lost postage funds. Not anymore! This dymo 400 turbo works flawlessly with stamps.com and prints individual postage labels in seconds. No more messing around with label sheets and loading trays. Best of all it doesn't use any toner, it uses thermal label rolls. (Laser toner is expensive) The 3-part postage label rolls are quite inexpensive, and the print quality is excellent. This baby should be paying for itself within 6 months. Cut my packing & shipping time almost to half. BTW, it also includes it's own software for making custom labels.
