Elton John - Hits no Misses
Like the title says Elton John always sings a good song. I can't think of any song that he has sung that has been a dud. He is one of a kind and truly a genius of his time. He sings with great passion and his music is good to listen to when you are feeling up or down. Don't get me wrong, he is not my favourite musican but one that always comes up with a hit. Greatest hits album? Why not take it through to 2008 because the hits just keep coming. Knowing what songs is on the CD helped me want to buy it because each one holds a special place in my heart for different reasons. This CD will be in my collection forever because a legend is a legend. Want to know more about this CD or Elton John, then buy it! You will find out what I am talking about and you will be playing it over and over again.

Truly magnificent!
My first Elton John CD and a double one at that! Why have I waited so long to sit back and be able to enjoy 34 of his unbeatable hits? He is now referred to as Sir Elton with a capital 'S' but I'll go even further and describe him as an Entertainer with a capital 'E'! His style and delivery result in a production number in each and every one of his songs, all of which entertain from beginning to end. You will be glad you added this double CD package to your collection!
Great songs just as I expected. EJ is always and without hesitation a great performer. The very reason that he will always be able to demand the best price, the best stage or whatever else he wants. Never fails to deliver.
Bought as a gift but ended up ordering another one for myself. Every song brings back great memories!
Elton John,...is terrible on this disc. The songs, "Melou, Melou", "Bride with Red", "Threaten Love Bast" and etc, are just too tedious to non Elton Fans. A complete waste of time if you don't read his books first.

Missing Hits and Flawed Mastering
The song "Daniel" is an inexplicably messed up master that fades out just seconds before the actual ending. Never heard that before... Another reviewer also mentioned that Honky Cat and Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting were edited (early fades). Other reviewers complain about the flat or EQ'd mastering problems. The credits say "various songs" remastered by Gus Dudgeon - this would explain the uneven quality (unacceptable from a major label like Universal/UTV).
As many have pointed out, this set is missing the #1 hit "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" (unforgivable) as well as the top 10 hits "Mama Can't Buy You Love" and "Empty Garden". There's several lame 90's tunes on disc two to make it even worse.
Universal's Gold series has done many new collections that had EVERY hit by major artists - so it can be done.

They Are All Here!
Every great Elton John song from the 'glory years' is right here in this CD. A while back it occured to me that pop music had undergone a subtle yet very real change, and to me it wasn't for the better. In fact, today, you will find bands re-recording these classics with their own type of imprint and if you are like me, you cringe. Seems they are running out of talent.
Almost every Elton John song is a classic. From the better known "Daniel" or "Rocket Man" to the lesser known but still great "Sad Songs", they are all filled with depth and style. Elton John's music is signature-by that I mean you know immediately when you hear even the instrumental parts before he actually sings, that this is one of his songs.
I came of age listening to these classics. It was great to find them all in one CD and to sit back and reminisce about the time that AM was real and music was truly music. This is a collection you will enjoy for years to come.

Good, but focuses too much on the later years
Elton's 2-disc greatest hits package is a good place to start if you're getting into Elton John, even though it falls short in some areas.
The Good: A great deal of Elton's best hits from the 70s and 80s are here: "Tiny Dancer," "Daniel," "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting," "I Don't Want To Go On With You Like That," etc. The first disc and half of the second is toe-tappingly listenable.
The Bad: Around the middle of the second disc is where this collection loses steam. It focuses too much on Elton's adult contemporary period, where frankly, his music declined in quality.
What I would have changed: I would have ditched the songs from The Lion King, Aida, and "This Train Don't Stop Here Anymore," for starters. In their place I would have included 70s standards like "Take Me To The Pilot," "We All Fall In Love Sometimes," and "I Think I'm Going To Kill Myself."
Overall, a good collection that could have been stellar if not for the second half of disc 2.
I got into Elton a couple years ago, and since I didn't have any of his stuff, I started out with this cd. It's great!! I could listen to it over and over again. The last few songs I'm not too fond of, but that's only because I'm not crazy about his newer stuff.

Elton's Best at a Single Package
In the sea of existing Elton's "Greatest Hits" compilations, this 2-CD set is the one that better resumes his career's highlights in my opinion (surely not considering the post-2002 releases). No need to wonder which one of all those available today to choose from.
Personally, I found this release more complete than the others since includes not only his most meaningful hits (although I know a "Greatest Hits" doesn't necessarily include his best songs), but also a booklet which tells interesting facts about his career, including a bunch of photographs from his early years. By the content found both on the CDs and the booklet, one might think - not without a reason - that this release was made targeting specially the US market.
My favorites are: "Your Song", "Crocodile Rock", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", "Philadelphia Freedom", "Little Jeannie", "Sad Songs" and "Circle of Life". Today, this compilation costs a little more than the price of a single CD, contains 34 songs, so it's an interesting purchase from the cost-benefit standpoint. It's worth the investment.

Good compilation.
This is a really good compilation of Johns'hits, but a great compilation should include several more 70's songs, as previously said by some reviewers.
There are just to many really great songs from Elton John's 70's period. Just to name a few not included: "Mona Lisa And Mad Hatters", "Tonight", "Sixty Years On", "I need You to Turn To", "Madman Across the Water", etc, etc.
Nevertheless it's a great introduction to Elton's career. But if you want make yourself a treat, please buy "Elton John live in Australia", it's maybe his best CD released ever, all of his hits backed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Live In Australia With The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Now that CD is just brilliant.
PS: in disc two, where is Blue Eyes?! Great song.

Dollars and (common) cents.
I'm going to rate this CD based on a $1 per song cost to total cost for the entire CD (Apple and Rhapsody charge $1 per song).
Elton John is good. This CD is even better. I was disappointed to learn that he didn't write a lick of his own lyrics (Bernie Taupin did). Elton John just wrote the music. And I guess we need to hear great music before we'll listen to the lyrics of a song.
Amazon is currently selling the CD for $15. The good news is that there is $20 worth of great music on it. This CD is worth ever dollar and them some. The essential Elton John songs are: Disc 1 - Tracks 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,11,12,13,14,15 & 16 (and I guess Candle In The Wind). Disc 2 - Tracks 1,3,4,5 & 6.

Elton lovers rejoice
I've got lots of old Elton on vinyl (yes, I'm old) and was delighted to find 37 Elton tunes on CD for such a great price. This is a wonderful collection with some newer songs I didn't have. And I can play them in the car! (vinyl is not so good for that).
I am really enjoying this one. How can anyone dislike anything done by Elton John? Highly recommended.

NOT THE GREATEST HITS!
Greatest Hits collections have almost always disappointed me because they invariably leave out a number of songs which were major hits of the artiste concerned. This Elton John collection is no different as four of his top ten hits are excluded. They are "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds" (no.1 on the Hot 100), "Mama Can't Buy You Love" (no.9), "Little Jeannie" (no.3) and "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That" (no.2). Although this album is superior to previous collections I'm afraid I can only give it a 4 star rating because when it's title says "Elton John Greatest Hits" I expect every one of his BIGGEST hits to be included!
Sir Elton John has always been a favorite for years. I'm glad I had to opportunity to purchase his greatest hits to this date. Sir John rocks!

Very enjoyable easy listening
I really liked this cd but there were two songs I think should have been included on here. The first is Lucy in the sky with diamonds which is one of my very all time favorites of his, the second song is Pinball wizard. These are two gems missing from this wonderful cd. Like I said though, the song selection is great considering all the hits he's done it would be impossible for 2 cds to cover them. Buy this cd if you are interested in getting familiar with Elton John's music or if you are a fan of his music at all. Aside from those two songs this is a great addition to any music collection.

Pretty good if you don't mind . . .
GREATEST HITS 1970-2002 lacks three essential Elton John singles: the number one smash "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds," the top ten hit "Mama Can't Buy You Love," and the Princess Diana tribute and another number one record, "Candle In The Wind '97."
Two other big songs do not appear on this collection, albeit duets: "That's What Friends Are For" with Dionne Warwick and others, and "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" with George Michael.
If you don't mind missing any of those songs, GREATEST HITS 1970-2002 comprises the rest of Elton John's biggest hits.

A GENUINE Greatest Hits Compilation
The song list speaks for itself on this double CD set. I won't get into the debate of concept albums versus complilations, other than to say that a CD set like this is perfect for filling up that iPod or other listening device with certified hits that easily withstand the assault of the "random" play function.
True fans of Sir Elton probably have all of these hits in one media or another, but this collection puts them together admirably.

Elton John Your Song and Doheny Boulevard
More than thirty years ago I was walking down Doheny Boulevard in LA, made a try for Sunset and ended up walking into the Troubador where they were featuring a virtually unknown UK singer pianist named Elton John. He was surprisingly taut and sculptured then and he had the round rimmed rawhide colored glasses on. Man when I heard him sing Your Song, one of his signature tunes since then and on this cd, I couldn't get over the unique and positively brilliant aspect of his compositions. I had no knowledge at the time of his writing partnership with Bernie Taupin and ofcourse no possible ability to forecast Elton's sheer dominance of the music business nor his eventual outrageousness on stage, fights and controversies and uncomprable density of near perfect work. I just know now what I could not have known back on that LA walk I had in a warm pulsating and euphoric drizzle-rain-Sir Elton is and was always either the best or near there when it comes to emotionally stirring music and enviable musicianship. On this cd, Elton John Greatest Hits 1970-2002 there are two other memorable selections that I have always found to be touching and introspective, Tiny Dancer and Levon. Taupin's lyrics are very UK and Elton's piano and vocals just make these two entries the types
of songs that you never get tired of because they bring out the nostalgia and warmth that all comes within you when you listen to special music. I purchased this cd because at its price point it represented a great value, it never hurts to get the best for less when it comes to buying any media. Don't forget I am one of those cd reviewers who seems to remember the entire career spans of all the artists still touring because at my age, I was there when they started. Based on my appreciable longevity in critiquing music, this cd is one that you must get at the risk of compromising in quality any personal music collection where, for some, reason it is missing.

Is the Guy on Disc One the Same Guy on Disc Two?
Elton John is a great piano player, one of the best. If you are an average fan, this is for you. The packaging of this CD set is nice, and the booklet is great!
Disc one is absolutly great! Every song is a great Elton John gem.
Disc two is another story. Elton has so many great songs, why put out a CD of the songs from when he was NOT at his peak. You could have filled that CD with other great 70s gems.
Now, the first six songs, and the last songs on disc two are very good and deserve to be there, but nothing else does. The other 10 songs are not good at all. They are all really slow and boring, not like Elton at all.
All in all, wortrh it just for the great disc one!

From what I can tell, Disc 1 should have been 2 discs.
I'm an old Elton John / Bernie Taupin fan. That time was Elton's most creative period, and where the most hits came out (both on AM and FM radio). Disc 1 has a lot of great hits, but has a lot missing (including entire albums). On a minor point, there is nothing from Empty Sky (this is OK - it wasn't that great of an album, but should have been represented by something). On a major point, nothing came from (the incredibly great) Tumbleweed Connection. That album had (at least) 4 great hits (Amoreena, My Father's Gun, Country Comfort, and Burn Down The Mission). With those 2 omissions, lets go through the rest of the John / Taupin library.

Honkey Chateau - Is it just me, or didn't anyone else think that Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters was a great song
Don't Shoot Me - Was there something wrong with Elderberry Wine?
Yellow Brick Road - The greatest omissions were Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding, and I've Seen That Movie Too.
Caribou - Pinky was missing. Not to mention the hard rocking Stinker.
Capt. Famtastic - What happened to the title track?
Rock Of The Westies - I can't believe they left the Yell Help Medley out.
All other albums were well represented (although, if a 3 disc set was being made, I would have added the songs Madman Across The Water, and Can I Put You On (from the Friends soundtrack - which wasn't represented at all).
I have not purchased this album, but from what I can make of the reviews, there seems to be much ado about very little (at least where disc 1 is concerned). Then again, maybe it's just me. I didn't pay much attention to Reg after he and Taupin went separate ways. As far as I can tell, the second disc is fine the way it is (although, I might have added Return To Paradise).
Others may disagree, but this would have been better as a 3 disc set.
I simply LOVE this album. Elton John is a phenomenal artist. His lyrical flow soothes my soul. This album is definitely my comfort music when I'm sad, and my fun music when I'm happy. I pop in my cd while I'm driving down the road and it feels as though I'm taking a stroll down memory lane. These songs fill my heart with wonderful memories and I find myself putting certain songs on repeat. I recommend this CD to anyone who wants to hear some good music.

The Best Elton Collection available today.
There's no way you can reduce Elton John's career to one cd and do it justice. So we have this beautifully remastered collection of hits on two cds. The first cd is devoted exclusively to Elton John's Greatest Hits from the 1970s. This is all right, because many of Elton's long time fans will agree that this was his most creative and prolific period. You get Bennie and the Jets, Crocodile Rock, Honky Cat, Good bye Yellow Brick Road, Philadelphia Freedom, and much more.
The second cd starts out with a few hits from the 70's, and then covers the 1980s comeback and the 1990s Disney film hits such as "Can You Feel the Love Tonight." It concludes with This Train Don't Stop Here Anymore, which recalls Elton's musical style from the 1970s. It is a fitting closure to a wonderful tour through John's career.
I have two very minor quibbles: One: I would have liked to have seen Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters, Border Song, Last Song, and Madman Across the Water on here, but I realize that there was no room and that these songs can be readily downloaded off of the Net. Number two: Honky Cat and Saturday Night's All Right For Fighting are presented in slightly edited versions (the songs fade out earlier than their original incarnations).
But these small complaints aside, this is the best collection of Elton you can buy, with the best remastered sound.
Not much was left out. This is a great collection of Elton's public and personal hits without buying every album.
Like someone else said, Elton John and Bernie Taupin "did" have the midas touch and no, you can't put ALL the great hits from those years on only 2 CDs but.....this is a must have for all Elton fans. I became a fan as a small child in the 70s and i collect "everything" by him.
