Black and white printing issues
I received this printer as a Christmas gift a few years ago. It was working well until a few months ago. Color output and web printing works fine, but when I try to print a document in just black and white, there are gaps and text is missing. I'm going to try and leave the printer off for a few days to see if the hardened ink softens. If anyone has any tips or assistance, please feel free to contact me. I cleaned the nozzle several times, but went through so much ink that I had to purchase another ink cartridge. Customer service at Epson is average. This is my first Epson and my first issues with one of their products. Usually I buy HP printers.

not very efficient
We've had this printer for almost 2 years. The scanner works great I can't complain about that. The ink is expensive and if you try to refill the cartriges the printer prints out lines and does weird stuff. The paper feeder is horrible. It can't sense where the paper is very good and just makes a really loud noise until you move the paper to a perfect spot. This printer is annoying.

Worst Printer EVER
Since I bought this printer brand new, I probably should have waited until the product reviews came out. Everything works fine except the printer, which is the reason I use it most often. The photo and print quality are good, but it goes through ink too fast and when you run out, FORGET IT! You might as well throw the whole thing out. It won't register the new cartridge even though it's the correct one. I complained to the company and they sent a replacement ink cartridge, which didn't work and then they sent a new printer, which again only worked until ONE of the initial ink cartridges ran out. Once you replace it, it won't register the new one. I feel like asking for my money back and buying a brand that isn't Epson.

Fine, when it allows you to print
We've been pretty happy with the scanning on this printer, and the printing, when it allows you to do so. We've done photos and documents and, to my untrained eye, they all look pretty good. However, like other users, I find that I simply am unable to print when, for example, I am out of cyan ink and I simply want to print a black and white document. I feel terrible because this is only about a year old, but we're going to have to throw it out. I just can't deal with being bossed around by my printer.
Haven't used it as a fax machine, so I can't comment on that aspect.
This printer gulps through ink and when you run out, you cannot print anything else until the cartridge is replaced. The scan quality is marginal at best. Receipts and other non-traditional media are problematic for this scanner. Online support for this Epson model on their website has not been available or 'down' the last 2 times that I have tried to access it. I just replaced my black cartridge and the printer only printed in color. Basically, I need to buy a new printer and it won't be an Epson!

I'll Never Buy and Epson Again
I bought this printer to so I'd have an all in one and save the desk space and I really regret getting rid of my old Canon scanner and HP printer.
The old canon scanned with one press of a button, this one takes a few too many steps and the scanning interface isn't as friendly as canon's
I am constantly running out of ink, this Epson has the shortest ink life I've ever seen in a printer. And when one color runs out, the printer won't work at all. It is very frustrating. And getting to be very expensive. I will likely bite the bullet and buy a new printer soon, just because it will likely save me in the long run, considering the high cost of keeping this one in ink.

awful product, worse customer support
I have had nothing but trouble with epson all-in-one, save the first couple months after purchase. Photo printing has always been marginal, but recently I purchased ink cartridges from epson, and now the colors will not print. I have done everything they recommend, and sadly I have been left to an answer of "we are sorry this happened." That does not give me any faith in Epson nor the products they sell. Never again will I buy from Epson.

Item arrived covered with blue slime
I just received this item, used, and when I took it out of the box, the ink cartridge had broken and the whole item was covered in a blue slime. I put it back in the box and emailed the shipper. Hopefully they'll send me a call tag to have it picked up, and charge back my credit card. I don't know whether it works or not, but it shouldn't be shipped with the ink cartridge in the machine.

spend a little bit more
For a few bucks more you can get a decent 3 in 1 from HP that will probably work better than this. I thought it was cool that instead of one multi-colored print cartridge (cyan, yellow, & magenta) it had separate cart's, but the down side is that they don't hold much ink and when you run out of one color you are done printing until you replace it (i.e. if you're out of yellow, you can't print a black text document). There are 2 things that really bother me.
1. I wanted to be able to scan a page of text and import it into a word processing program, but according to Epson's tech support, you can't do it unless you purchase additional 3rd party sofware...my old HP would scan into MS Word right out of the box.
2. The fast print/low quality mode is SO fast and SO low quality that it's basically useless and I have to print even the most minor temporary prints in higher quality (using more ink which I have to replace more often).

Wow. Complete and utter WASTE of money.
I had this printer for about two months before it started flaking out on me. I got it for [...] after rebate, and it's one of the worst purchases I have ever made.
Don't get me wrong, it copies and scans wonderfully. But its primary function is to print - but it fails here.
I depend on good ink quality for shipping labels, resumes, academic papers - and ink splotches started appearing, gaps on the printout that repeated head cleaning and maintenance could not fix. So much paper was wasted in between 'nozzle cleanings' that would, at first, temporarily fix it before I would have to clean the nozzle heads again 10 pages later. And each time it warns you 'that cleaning the heads uses up ink, are you sure you want to do this?' No, but I had to. All the time.
Customer support was nonexistent, besides, I hadn't purchased a warranty - they were sure to remind me of that so they wouldn't have to lift a finger to help me after the 30 day guarantee.
The software that comes with this printer is batty - on one of its 'good days' when it worked perfectly and printed great quality, abruptly it claimed that it was low on ink and would not print another page. There was no override for this, even though I knew there was about a half of a cartridge left.
Then, after I replaced the half-empty ink cartridge with a fresh one, it prints out spatters and streaks everywhere. Stripes and gaps all over the paper. I clean the nozzle heads, which some times work. Three nozzle cleanings later, and it is saying that now the cartridge, which is brand new and 98% full, is now too low to print any more pages.
With a term paper to turn in, I reached the end of my rope. Four months after I purchased this thing, innumerable blood pressure spikes from helpless frustration, wasted paper and ink, I am throwing it out where I'm pretty sure it started - the trash pile.
I am never buying Epson again. Don't make my mistake and waste your money. Unless you want a printer for only 30 days, kind of like the disposable cameras of yore.

Epson Stylus CX3810 All In One
Great performance for the price. Print quality is excellent. Scanning is easy and again, the quality is great. The one-touch copying is very useful. Setup and installation was quick and painless.
This is definitely not THE best MFC printer on the market, but it is more than enough for the average user and an incredible value.

Warning Complete Junk Do Not Buy This Printer
Pros- Inexpensive Price, Compact Design
Cons- The whole printer is a CON job. The ink is more than the printer.
The cartridges are small. Will not print if one is empty. Complicated ink cartridge change out procedures. Ink clogs: unrepairable. I had to send one back because of ink clogs and the second one from EPSON did the same thing before I emptied the first set of cartridges. Software conflicts: big headache for some windows XP users. Slow scanner. Few scan options. Few print options. Actual prints are not accurate according to software pre-print image i.e. dummy software. I still have my Espon CX3810 sitting on my desk, I use it for a bookend now. Do not be suckered like me. I will never buy from EPSON again. Buy a Canon.

Cheap printer but expensive to maintain
I got this printer for cheap. That is the only good news. The bad part is it won't allow you to print any if any one ink catridge is empty. I just don't understand why EPSON designed a product like this.
I had a situation where I need a urgent printout. I thought I can print with color ink as blank ink is out. But the problem is it didn't allowed me to print. I am forced to buy the blank ink inorder to print a color page. This is absurd.
I used my Canon S300 for several years and it worked like a charm. I bought this because for the mutli-functionality. But you have to pay the price for the ink and maintenance.
I hardly printed 50 pages and the blank ink catridge is gone. Usually I use draft print to save ink but that didn't help.
I don't recommend this printer to anyone. I really want to give 0 stars but there isn't one.

Save money on the printer...spend it on the ink
Great print/scan/copy quality. Smooth lines and blending and the ink doesn't smudge easily. But be prepared to spend a FORTUNE on ink. I have a small home business, so I use it more than the average user, but not a whole lot. In the six weeks I had it I have gone through two ink cartridges, $40 worth. I printed about 800 pages.
If you want awesome prints with a good looking printer that is cheap and easy to use, this is your machine. But make sure you can afford to keep using it!
I got this printer after I was tired of spending $40 per ink cartridge for my Lexmark. Epson's were only $20! But that $40 cartridge would last me 6 months or more. Not three weeks! Needless to say, I'm returning this to the store and I'm going back to Lexmark. The printers are a little more expensive (I'm looking at the x7350 that's $129), but in the end the value is much greater. They get up to 5000 pages per cartridge, or so they claim. It must at least be better than 400 pages a cartridge! It also is a genuine all-in-one with a fax machine.

Very bad .. gulps black ink by gallons
Bought this printer in June. Printed about 10 pages so far. The black ink is now dry and needs to be replaced. Very bad.
Pros:
Awesome price
can print / scan / copy
pretty fast printing speed
good quality printing
Cons:
somewhat bulky
ink doesn't last too long
I've been loyal to Epson for a decade in part because of Mac support -- when no one else cared. We were looking for cheap little all in one, and I grabbed this off the shelf w/o thinking about it. Sigh. No Macintosh support. Better labeling -- ANY "no mac" labeling at all -- would have been nice.

mac users don't bother...
Does not work for the Mac! Can you believe that, neither could I until I contacted Epson and received the reply that it is indeed not compatible. Is it really that hard for dual platform use production. Im guessing this was designed in the early 90's and usb technology was just coming out. Mac users beware.

Good for scanning and full page printing...
...BUT, that is about it!! If you want to print ENVELOPES, FERGEDDIT!! this thing DOES NOT have a paper thickness adjustment lever and simply will NOT FEED an envelope without jamming!!
I only got it cause my CX5200 started having MAGenta (RED) printhead clogging problems for the SECOND time AFTER having been serviced by EPSON. I loved the CX5200 cause it never flinched even when I forgot to flip the "heavy stock" lever before putting an envelope in to print.
From what I have been reading on here, the entire 'CX' line has problems and does not meet the usual "EXCELLENCE" that I have come to expect from EPSON printers.

slow as heck, really big in size, but good price
you pretty much get what you pay for with this cx3810. software is great because you can choose to only install the printer's drivers, and not all the bloated propietary software that comes on the disc. easy to set up, easy to use. but it does print SLOW. so if speed if a necessity, dont buy this printer. and the copy function is only 1 copy a time, meaning u have to press the button each time you want to make 1 copy. so its fine if you want 1 copy, but would probably get annoying if you wanted 10 copies of something. print quality is good, scanning is fine. and the size is nearly ginormous. i had an hp 1210 that was like 5 years old and it was smaller than this behemoth.

Rage against the machine
I've had this all-in-one for about 6 months.
Positive: the scanning and print quality are very good.
Negative:
- It prints *incredibly* slowly; I'm comparing it to other inkjets here, not a laser jet.
- It goes through ink very quickly, and the ink is exceedingly expensive (do this math when you think about buying a printer; I'm pretty sure any HP inkjet I've had is more economical)
- It won't let you print *at all* if any of the four print cartridges are empty. At least with HPs, if I'm out of ink and desperate for a page, I can just pick a color that's still in stock and print with that. Right now, as I sit here with an empty yellow print cartridge and an entirely black-ink project that I'd REALLY like to get done tonight, this is a total dealbreaker for me.

Does what I need, EXCEPT...
It doesn't convert images to text. I didn't buy this machine, my husband did. We replaced another Epson 'all in one', a different model, and that one DID convert images to text. The old one still scans, we'll be reconnecting it for my project.
Overall the the CS3810 works very well. It's a little slow to print, but the end result is excellent, so I don't really mind if it takes a bit of time to do the job. It scans well also. For the money, it's a good machine that isn't complicated to use. If you want a machine that converts images to text, DON'T buy this. Otherwise, you should be quite happy with it.

I love it except...
I love everything about my Epson CX 3810 printer except just a couple things.
1. It will not scan text and convert them to word documents. It makes a picture of everything. Great for photos and creating pdf files, but not so great when you need to scan a text document and edit it.
2. It flies through the ink. I've bought two replacement black cartridges and one each of all the colors in the last six months. That adds up to roughly $100 and I've printed less than three reams of paper. My old lexmark is more economical.

Good printer for the money but "All in one"??????????
Good printer for the money, but it is not true when you say "All in one printer" this term we use with printers that can do
1. Print
2. Copy
3. Scan
4. Fax
This printer does 1st 3 so I might call it "Almost All in one printer", I mean EPSON could have add a small modem port while putting all this scanning and printing hardware, I am sure it would cost less then a $1 to EPOSN giving the margin of being printer manufacturing giant of the world.
Printer is fast but not fast enough as its peers like Canon, also printing speed mentioned in the book must be "Draft" printing speed otherwise if you could have more then one regular page in 30sec you might be printing a triangle or a single phrase per page :)
okay lets talk about quality, I gave it 5/5 period, for a dirt cheap printer (I got it for $30 from Staples.com) it does meet or exceed any expectation you might have for a printer in this category.
Scanning is good but software should have little more options but copy function is a killer, just press color or B/W button from the printer (whatever type of copy you need) and boom, you got a copy in less then a minute while sitting on your desk and without truing on the computer, cool isn't it? No more going to store for a stupid 5 cent copy and waste of 1/2 gallon of gas; not to mention the time wasted (on invested).
Complete waste of Ink as all EPOSN printers are; it does a little version of head cleaning every time you turn it on, better keep it on to save the ink, use only 3 Watts in sleep mode since Epson Stylus CX3810 has earned the ENERGY STAR by meeting strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.
Remember printer manufacturers make money from the sales of ink cartridges not printer so these suckers drink ink faster then your fish drink water. (this clich seems little far fetched huh?)
this printer use Durabrite ink but I don't :) , I use compatible dye based ink cartridges from eBay; the price and does the trick as per my requirements, shhhhhhh..... don't tell EPSON!!!
I mean come on; get serious here, why should I pay 4 times more for a ink that last 80 year? I am sure I might not last that long myself :) you know I am not maintaining historical archive for the library of congress using this printer :)
I use it for my every day work and most of my print out heading towards garbage bin after I am done with them; in some cases they go out to postal mail where I am sure I don't need them for next 80 years.
For Photo printing I always use 6 colors printing where as this printer has 4 basic colors so detail in photos are not that "detail" but again not bad either, if you print photos on good quality photo papers they came out as "keepers".

Great All-In-One for 50 bucks
Just bought and installed it , installation was a breeze. Ran my first print , good print results and extremetly quiet while printing.
Scanned a picture and it scanned perfect with great results but it was bit slow and the software lets you save in various formats like PDF JPEG TIFF.
Love the single button copy feature but a bit slow though. Can't expect more for that price.
Overall 5 stars, just wish the inks were a bit cheaper. Very happy with my purchase.

Great Printer....if it would install! :-(
I've read AWSOME reviews on this printer. For the price bracket it is in, I've heard it is a great printer that does the job well! After many months of research and reviews and articles, I desided to purchase this printer. I got it from officemax.com for about $60 after rebate. It was delivered for free 2 days later. I tore open that box like a kid on Christmas morning! Only to discover, after hours of trying, it would not install. First I was getting driver errors. Then I was getting communication errors. I contacted Epson tech support only to have them tell me to do the same steps I did 20 times before. I even went out and got a new USB cable incase that was the problem, no luck. So here I sit, 3 days after delivery, and hours and hours of work and frustration.....and no printer! :( I spent hours on google trying to find some nugget of information, nothing. Tech support is clueless. This evening I even went to Office Max and exchanged the printer for another one, and still the same exact problems! Im clueless! Im going to try CALLING tech support (previous corrispondence has been via email) in the morning to see if they can help. If I still cant get it installed Im going to have to find a new printer and return this one. Its a shame, I was really excited for this one!
If anyone has had the same problems, I would LOVE if they could tell me what they did to fix it! missangi@super-babies.com
Good luck for anyone else who is attempting to install this printer! I consider myself an advanced computer user, and this one has me stumped!!!

After faulty MFC-210C and blurry MP450, I bought this printer. I am very happy with this. All functions are simple and to my utmost satisfaction.
The first day, I printed 25 glossy letter photos and they are all vry good. So tried all other brands before Epson but No other can beet Epson for color photo printing.
I am just wondering now why I wasted my money and time on other brands. May be I heard and saw too much of them but finally I could find a good printer that is Epson.

I got what I paid for
I got this for $40 at Staples after rebates. My HP just died, and I needed something quick. For that money, it's a bargain. But you get what you pay for.
PROS - Inexpensive AIO
CONS - Stand-alone copier is disappointing, printing is a bit slow
Printer - Works fine, but quite slow
Scanner - Works fine
Photo printer - No experience
Ink - Uses 4 catridges, a plus. The cartridges are easy to load, and the software monitors ink level, that's nice.
Installation - Follow the instructions on the included "Getting Started" poster. Takes about 15 minutes at most.
Stand-alone copier - Useless. If you want 5 copies, you have to press the "Start" button 5 times!
DOS - Since it doesn't support PCL, printing in DOS may be difficult.
As a second printer, or for a dorm room, this printer is a bargain. As a day to day work-horse, look elsewhere.
BOTTOM LINE - The printer is worth $40, but doesn't meet MY needs. I knew it wouldn't, but as I said I needed somehing to replace my dead HP real fast.
Works well. It prints how I expected it to for a low priced printer. I picked it up at a local Staples for $59.95 after rebates and it does everything I wanted it to. I love having the scanner and with seperate inks, it saves me a lot of money on refills. I liked the software that came with it and it is easy to use to me. Epson is a great company and this is a great printer.
I do not recommend this printer to anyone. The speed is extremely slow. The advertised 20 pages or so per minute in black ink on draft mode is really misleading in my opinion because it does not provide a measurement of how fast it will print at a normal resolution.
The draft mode printout is very dotty and light, and is not really suitable for anything in my opinion. The next level of print quality (there are 5 levels) takes very long. I think it took about 40 seconds or longer to print a color page. For this reason alone, I give the printer 1 star rating.
I personally like the Epson brand and strongly recommend purchasing the next model up, which is the CX4800.
I was lucky enought to have a store that was willing to make the exchange without a restocking fee. I am pleased with the CX4800 and it is worth the additional money.

Poor photo print quality
This printer is a good buy for office work but NOT for photographs.
Have not used the scanner. Copier works fine but I did not like the print quality of any photos printed from PC files, memory card or even photo-copied.
Basically. this printer seems fine for documents and document type prints but not for glossy photographs. The pictures are grainy and show the dots. The ink colors on my prints were good but could have been better. Using the special Epson papers, my photographs were still not good due to the graininess. My digital camera is a Canon-7MP so my pictures are good to begin with.

Three-in-One All-in-One with Unique Photo Feature
Excellent value. Prints, copies, flatbed scans as expected. Uniquely prints photos that are smug and water resistant. No other multi-function manufacturer offers that.
Well engineered. Smooth and easy setup. Photos are excellent for a multi-function, nearly as good as my Epson Picturemate.
I thought about buying the more expensive Epson CX5800F because it offers fax. I seldom use fax so instead I'll just scan in the document, then either email or use internet fax.
My only knock is that this is marketed under the overloaded term "All in one" so I guess that makes the CX5800F an "All-er in one". It would be so much clearer if the industry adopted acronyms like PSC or PSCF to clearly distinguish major functions at a glance.
