[+] 8.0 BIG help for bad speller!
I've had a franklin speller for more than 25 years, they are great! Last one I had was very small. I wish this one was a little bigger. It seems the older I get, the smaller everything gets. I still love it.

[+] 2.0 An Improvement That Is Not An Improvement
I had used the Franklin MWD440 since the 1990s. It was simple and direct. This "improved" version is awful. It is difficult to open. You can't go directly to input a word (it's "home" page is a clock). The input is all caps. It is really a waste of money. My 440 died after MUCH happy use. Now I'll just do without and use a hardcopy dictionary until I find a better electonic version ... like an EXACT REPLICA of the Franklin MWD440!
THREE CHEERS to Amazon.com for a decent return policy!

[+] 2.0 222shopper222
I am very disappointed with my Franklin MWD-460. I bought it to use for looking up unfamiliar words encountered while reading. The device is almost useless for this purpose because the words that I try to use it for are not stored in it. It appears to be usefull only for very common words which I already know. It is useful as a spelling aide.

I continually find that a letter that I had typed was omitted because I did not press it hard enough.

[+] 10.0 Franklin Electronic Dictionary.
I really like this product. It most of the time saves me from fumbling through the unabridged print version. A nice tool for crossword solvers.

[+] 10.0 I greatly appreciate the Franklin Bookman (MWD-440).
I purchased my Franklin Bookman (MWD-440) more than 10 years ago and it is just now beginning to show wear and tear. I am currently looking to be a repeat buyer because my display screen is not allowing me to view complete letters and words. I like it because of the convenience and practicality. I have no negative reviews to make. It totally served its purpose for me. I use it when I read my Bible, magazines or other materials. The Hangman game was also fun to play. I did not utilize the Bookman Cards Insert located on the back. I am sure I denied my self the opportunity for more exciting learning adventures.

[+] 2.0 Horrible spell checker
I bought this MWD-460 and is the poorest quailty I have ever seen.
Opening the case is the first major challenge. Then trying to set the time and date is a nightmare, I was never able to do it. The screen is lousy and poorly lighted. To use this as a spell checker you need to know how to spell pretty good to start with or you can forget about finding the correct word. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS ONE.

[+] 8.0 It's a great product!
This is a great product, especially at such a low price.
The best feature for me was the list of SAT words and flashcards. It was more efficient than making index cards or studying definitions from a regualar dictionary.
The time it takes to define a word is fairly quick as well.
Some definitions include funny etymologies toward the end that really help the word stick.
There are a few drawbacks to the product. For instance, the screen doesn't light up, the word list can't hold more than 40 words, and the buttons sometimes tend to be unresponsive.
Still, for about $30, you get more than you'd expect. At least if you're in high school. If you're an adult, then a dictionary with a larger word capacity would be a better buy.
I definitely recommend it! :)

[+] 10.0 I'm back *****
I have had my Franklin Spanish/English Dictionary for several years and use it often, if it was lost I would buy another of the same... As it is, I'm back for one, minus the Spanish, as a birthday gift...

[+] 2.0 Does not work as a spell corrector
I bought this for my daughter to help with spelling. It was useless for that purpose. For example, typing in the word "becus" came up with "basis" and "bassos" but not "because."

[+] 10.0 handy dictionary
I leave it on my nightstand so I can look up words without pulling out the giant dictionary everytime. So useful for a quick definition. Exactly what I wanted.

[+] 10.0 High utility value
Excellent functionality. I'm very satisfied with the next-to-bed-lamp and on-the-bus service it provides. Am considering adding an English to French translator to my repertoire too.

[+] 2.0 Disappointing - MWD-460
Hard to use.
Hard to open.
Thin, soft rubber keys have to be pressed hard to work. So when entering a word, one or more of the letters usually don't show up. Have to press the keys hard and directly.

To turn it on, you have to hit TWO keys. I expected to just hit the power button, like my older Franklin electronic dictionary.

Too many buttons that just get in the way.

Most of the words I looked up when reading are not there.

Don't buy this unit. Look on....

[+] 8.0 Franklin Dictionary and Thesaurus electronic
Great product for those kids who hate looking things up in the dictionary. Makes it faster and easier to them and they still are getting the correct information! Thanks for your prompt delivery as well.

[+] 8.0 Reasonably good tool.....
The features are more than enough for a person like me who needs a handy tool to look for word meanings and spellings. The only thing that needs improvement is the key pad. Although it works good, its very soft and one may miss a letter in a word, and its very painful to go back and correct it or type the whole word again. It may be my personal limitation but it would be good if if the key pad were sturdy like that in most of the calculators. The other models may be better in this respect but over all I think it a reasonably good tool.

[+] 2.0 bummer keys
I purchased this product for school. First, I was unable to get the cover open, it is very sticky and not easy to open at all. Then, the keys are rubber and kept getting stuck. I dont need to know the definition of "oooooooooooooooooo". It is really too bad this product had potential, if they would fix a few of their "problems".

[+] 2.0 I can't believe, it worked just for one month!
The product I bought is new, however it did not even work for one month! I did not take the service plan. Not sure what to do! This is really disappointing!

[+] 6.0 Disappointing
I bought this dictionary as an aide to studying on the train. Unfortunately, it doesn't have all of the words that a standard dictionary or the online dictionaries have.

Great space saving desk top reference. Don't know why I waited so long to buy one. Sometimes the cover is hard to pop open. Overall it is a snap to use.

[+] 2.0 Not a good produce
The dictionary and thesaurus is too limited to be of much use. Any odd word gets a "correcting" process and gives you other words . I would not recommend this unit above a fifth grader.

[+] 10.0 great product for bad spellers on the go!!!!
I've had one of these for over 14 years now, when they first started coming out. My brother has the original one I got freshman year in high school, and I have one I got junior year. This item is still very much the same as it was 14 years ago, just a little sleaker and smaller. Very easy to use, turn on, type the word, and search. It still has thesaurus and games, and as reviews below mention, occasionally still brings up entertaining words if you are as bad of phonetic speller as I am. This item is excellent to save you from digging through pages of a dictionary in search of just a spelling, and not the definition. A must if you can't even get the first 3 letters square like I do looking up words. Most of these models will also play hangman with you, amongst a few other games to try and work with your spelling skills. The spelling ace my brother still has actually contained many definitions. These little machines are worth their weight in gold for highschoolers and college folks writing paper, even with spell check on the computer.

[+] 10.0 Another Great Gift
SHE LOVES THIS ITEM AND CAN'T BE WITHOUT IT, ALWAYS AT HER DESK

[+] 4.0 Amen, and beware the keyboard!
I agree with all of the negative comments made by previous reviewers, particularly the difficulty of opening the cover. I would add that the keyboard is very difficult to use. When a key is pressed, it gets stuck on one side or the other under the faceplate. If you push it again to unstick it, you generate the same character again.
I recommend that anyone interested in this product handle one in a store before purchase.
Reviewer [A3LT18HMLX3TIJ] | Date [January 22, 2007]
[+] 6.0 Helpful, but . . .
Just wish it was a bit more complete. Didn't have as many word options in the thesaurus as I'd hoped.

[+] 4.0 need a dime to open it
The construction of this unit is really bad. It is so hard to open the cover. So if you have open it, don't close it untill you are sure that you won't use it for a while.

[+] 4.0 Dictionary for toddlers
the first three words I typed in to find definitions for it didn't have. Need I say more?
Reviewer [AIJCPPXBPR691] | Date [January 10, 2007]
[+] 4.0 Mixed
I am very happy with the dictionary and Thesaurus. However, the lid is poorly manufacutered and difficult to open, making me wonder if the reduced price of the item was because of the cover difficulty.

[+] 6.0 Pocket Dictionary & Thesaurus is OK
The keypad is easy to use and it's pretty easy to figure out without having to read the entire instruction book. However, the choices on the thesaurus are not that numerous. The auto correct is a nice function. This would be great for someone in junior high or high school, but will not meet the needs of a college student.
Reviewer [A3IDZAT993LZXN] | Date [January 4, 2007]
[+] 2.0 Not for big kids....
I'm a college grad and I bought this dictionary thinking it would be convenient to look up words I didn't know in novels and the like. So far it seems to only have about 50% of the words I've looked up in the memory. Not too helpful, now if you are looking for word definitions like "hedge" - this is for you :)

[+] 6.0 size?
I am not sure this unit in inches or centimeters? can somebody clear this up. Or maybe this is a smale lap top?
Reviewer [A3F5ERFJ6M3UQY] | Date [October 30, 2006]
[+] 4.0 More incomplete than what it claims
The package says it has 274,000 words in its dictionary. I checked it against a very large dictionary I have at home that has 180,000 words. I pulled 10 uncommon words out of my dictionary, and none of them were in this one. Beware! This product is a basic dictionary at best.
