We wanted a portable mount that would be easily accessible and transportable from one vehicle to the other and that could be easily hidden from site. This one fit all criteria and works great. We are very happy with our purchase.
This is a great solution to the suction cup that sometimes can leave marks on your window or having to permanently mount the suction disc to your dashboard. Its great to move from car to car or lending it to a family member or friend. It works great. I've never had it fall or slide from its original position. Its totally worth the extra five or ten bucks than the other cheaper stands.
A little bulky, but it doese a good job at not moving around, and it breaks down so that it can be stored for travel.
I needed something to hold my gps since the windsheild in my car is at such an angle that I couldn't get the suction mount to work properly. This is wonderful stays in place no loose parts. good price

Stable and secure...
My Garmin 265WT portable GPS unit arrived last month. Included with it was the window-shield suction mount. I tried it and it worked OK. It was a stable mount, but somewhat of a security pain-in-the-neck. Since security is an issue nowadays with portable GPS units, I had to remove the suction mount from the windwhield in order to hide it away each time I exited my car. Then, I had to re-attach it to the windshield again upon re-entering. I subsequently searched the Internet for alternative mounting devices. Nearly every user product review recommended the portable friction mount because of its ease of use and stability. I purchased one, and have been using it ever since. It has great stability due to its lockable "bean-bag" base, and I am able to install/uninstall it in seconds. It definitely is the way to go.

Much better than the Garmin window mount!
This friction mount is easy to use. It also doesn't leave any ring on my windows that would alert would-be criminals to a Garmin being in my car. It also makes it easy to store my Garmin under my seat. And it's legal in states where the window mount is not legal.

Friction Mount Review
Very stable. I used it over pot hole laden roads on Saturday and it stayed firm. I am happy with it and so easy to take from one vehicle to another.

Its Big. Make sure it will fit on your dash.
This item works great but it is very large. Make sure it will fit on your dash before you order. If it fits it works great. If not, not so much. Amazon should put the size on the web page. Its about 8" across.

Excellent Mount!
Forget the windshield device that comes with a GPS for mounting. When it comes to lasting an entire ride, my GPS loves this portable friction mount. It knows its place and provides stability for easily viewing the GPS. This mount also allows for positioning the GPS easily within reach, anywhere that is convenient on the dash. Don't take your GPS on the road without it.
Grips my dash really well. It is a great alternative when you don't want to "stick" the suction cup to the windshield.

Great addition to my 265WT nuvi.
This nuvi portable mount works great and is pretty stable. The only time I had an issue was taking a curve a bit to fast. This is also easy to hide under my driver seat. Well worth it and much less expensive than the Garmin site even with a 20% discount.

It actually works
I was a little sceptical of this when we first got it as a gift. It looked to bulky to actually be practical, so we didn't actually use it for a few months. But now after using it for almost a year, my wife and I are very satisfied with the product. We use it in two cars (Honda and Subaru) and and it has worked perfectly every time. No slipping, easy to use, and not as obtrusive as it appears. When not in use, we just stash the beanbag part under the seat or in a door pocket and put the GPS and plastic hardware in the glovebox. Thus, the tell-tale wrings from the windshield mount are gone, and potential thieves are none the wiser.
Very nice mount. It does move slightly when I am driving on curvy roads, but I am a very spirited driver. I like that is easy to move from car to car.
We used this on vacation and it was so nice to put it on the dash.
I have a Mini Van and used to put the GPS on the windshield, then
to check or change the screen, you have to reach and can be dangerous.
This is very convenient when changing the screen, with-in arms reach.
Easy to put away and no marks on your windshield. Love it so glad I
bought it, you will not regret it.
I was a bit skeptical about this mount but after using it for the 1st time, all I can say is amazing!!! It does not move from where you place it, not mater how fast or tight a turn you take. The only problem is that it is a bit big and bulky so not easy to hide.

Looked in Stores...found it here cheaper.
This is the exact same thing that most stores sell for $39.99 or $49.99. After the sticker shock, I looked on-line and found this for $10-$20 less. It keeps your GPS on the dash and doesn't slide around. You also don't get the suction cup mark on your windshield. It allows you to easily toss it under the seat and out of view of potentional theives. All-in-all, a good buy.

Works great in Avalon, Odyssey, Ford E150
Great product - does just what it says, and eliminates the frustration in cold weather climates of the suction-based mount falling off the windshield. Very nice. Now if I could just come up with a snowmobile mount...

This works so well. I also bought one for a friend. It is super easy to locate and relocate your Garmin on the dash, and it stays securely in place. Highly recommend this addition to your Nuvi.

Not great but there aren't many options
This is a lot better than trying to use a windshield mount, but still. This thing slides all over the place on my dash. Its four "toes" curl up and result in the mount not staying in place. It's big and hard to conceal - if I don't want to remove the GPS from it every time I park, that means I have to tuck the whole thing as best I can under the seat and hope nobody sees it. It's not terribly hard to remove from the GPS if you do it the proper way, but it's very easy to do it another, improper way (removal of the ball from the "GPS holder") which after a few times results in broken plastic strips on the "GPS holder" and the mount no longer mounting to the GPS holder (which I've now had to replace twice).
But, I don't know of any other options - there might be some generic ones. And it's a lot better than using the default windshield mount, which is awful and results in your GPS repeatedly dropping onto the ground or dash. I just can't say that I like it.
This is a must have in conjunction with the Garmin nuvi. Firm, stable platform, allowing for different contours.
I bought this because I didn't want to leave a mount on the windshield. It stays put even if you put on the breaks. I bought another one for my daughter.

Excellent, does what it should, but be careful with the locking latch
I have this paired with a Nuvi 285WT, and have had no issues with it at all.
It isn't as big as some seem to indicate it is, which had me a little worried until I actually received it.
The locking mechanism is a little odd in 2 ways:
1) It really only prevents the mounting arm from rotating in the base, doesn't prevent the GPS from being turned/moved on the arm.
2) You only need to move the latch/handle part of the lock some of the way in the lock slot to lock the arm. There is about another inch of slot that you could try to push the latch into, but since it won't actually move further, and because the latch has a bit of "give", there is a good chance that you will snap the latch/handle off. Basically, the locking slot is bigger than it needs to be and is misleading. I almost found this out the hard way...
While this would fit in either the glovebox or the center console in my car, due to other things filling them up pretty much to the max already, I opted to put this under the seat when not in use. The only thing is that I decided to put it in a plastic baggie before doing so because I have a suspicion that the base might end up picking up dust/dirt/crud from the floor and over time losing some of it's non-slip qualities.
Highly recommended for any GPS that will fit it, although I am suspicious that the locking latch may easily break if stressed beyond where it should be.

Garmin Portable Friction Mount
This mount is the best one that I have tried. So far it has worked real well. It does not leave a mount ring on the windshield and it has been real stable on my car's dash. I usually hide it in the trunk when I have used the Garmin Novi 285WT. Although on a few occasions I have pushed it under one of the front seats (But it doesn't fit well). I would by again if I needed another one!

It' O-K but for my needs but I prefer Garmin's flexible friction mount
I started using this bean-bag friction mount when I bought my first serious Garmin GPS (the 2720) and continued to use it on my subsequent Garmin GPS units (2830, nuvi 350, 750, 285, 500, etc.). It worked but it wasn't perfect for my needs.
I travel often and needed a mount that I could put in my briefcase and although I could with this one there were a few drawbacks:
* Since it is full of lead-shot it showed up as a dark mass when I sent my bag through the scanners at airports and they had to manually search my bag unless I took it out first
* The mounting arm and bracket has to be taken off of the mount before storing in a bag (the little pieces tended to move around in my briefcase making them hard to find). Not a big deal unless you are looking for them at night while standing in the cold or rain at the rental car lot
* I found that it was not very stable when used in certain vehicles (I rent all kinds of cars on my trips, most were fine, some weren't)
When Garmin came out with their flexible friction mount I bought one right away. I found that I could fold it flat without taking the arm or the bracket off; it is lighter and has no lead shot so it was not a problem at airports; since it conforms to the dash it works better for me on a wide variety of cars and SUVs.
Some people will like this one better and some will prefer the other one, either way they are both good units and you should be happy with whichever one that you chose.

excellent GPS holder
This is a great product. Stays right where you put it and doesn't move. Allows you to rotate it to your desired angle. Can be moved from car to car. Love it....
I bought this from Amazon to use with my Garmin Nuvi 1490T GPS. Took me longer to open the bubble pack packaging with my knife, than it did to figure out how to mount my GPS on it and adjust it for easy viewing.
I drive a mini-van, so I put this up on the dash next to my suction cup mounted old GPS, and used it for a 300+ mile rount trip about 30 minutes after opening the package. It never budged at all, staying exactly where I put it at all times. Now, I'm not a race car style driver in my mini-van, but I've had to make quick stops, etc, and it didn't move. Would it move if I slammed on my brakes while doing 70mph? Probably.
I've discontinued using my old GPS and cleaned my windshield of that left behind suction cup ring mark for the last time. Now, nobody can walk past my mini-van with the sun visors in the windshield, and be able to point to that ring mark on the windshield as evidence that I had a GPS or radar detector for them to steal.

Quickly hide your GPS
Excellent. Small enough to lift up and place under the seat (without disconnecting) when leaving the car. Reverse the process when returning.
The mounting unit, purchase thru Amazon, is quite versitile and due to friction and adequate flexibility it seems to fit all dashes that we have used it on. Probably a little over priced but worth not having to hassle with a window or non-friction mount. Should be included as a cheaper alternate when purchasing the GPS unit.

Excellent Product..
This dashboard Garmin GPS holder is exactly what I was looking for.
Its very stable, not too big, and can be conveniently moved on & off the dashboard. Plus the price is right.
I was surprised how stable the friction mount is on my car dashboard. It is much better than having my GPS hanging from my car's front window. At first I was a little sceptical because the mount looked bulky, but I loved it once I tried it.
I really love this product. It works so much better (and cleaner) than the suction window mounts which always fell off while driving. Great price too (half of what it cost on Garmin's web store).

Very Handy GPS Mount
This friction mount is very stable and easily removed from view when we leave the car. The GPS is easily attached and detached. The fact that its is a bit bulky is a necessary result of its effectiveness as a portable friction mounted device. A gas station attendant asked where we got it (Amazon) and complained that his suction-cup mount left a mark on his windshield. When this mount is removed from the top of the dashboard, there is no evidence that a GPS might be in the car.

Wouldn't be without this Garmin accessory!
This Garmin friction mount is our second and was purchased for my car because my husband always seems to have our first one in his car. Many of our friends have seen our mount and purchased one for themselves. This is the perfect way to easily mount your Garmin and it NEVER moves. When I leave my car I can take the Garmin with me at the click of a button and the cable remains connected to the mount...it couldn't be simpler. Thanks you Garmin!
This keeps my Garmin in perfect position on the dashboard wherever I want it -
and to think I nearly used tape that would have damaged my dashboard because I
was so frustrated over the Garmin always fallng down! This is really a great
product.

Perfect Beanbag Mount Especially for Garmin GPS Receiver
The Garmin Portable Friction Mount is the perfect companion for Garmin GPS Receivers. It's design is very well done, in that it is exactly the right height, doesn't interfere with the angle at which you want to view your Garmin Receiver, includes the matching support bracket and ball on which to mount your Garmin Receiver, and especially, it doesn't rely on a suction cup to hold the bracket to the base. Using any beanbag friction base with a GPS Receiver is better than using the windshield suction cup mount, both because it doesn't leave a telltale ring on the windshield when you hide it when you leave your car in a public parking place, and it enables you to place the unit in a more desirable viewing position than stuck to the windshield (for instance, where the unit isn't in the direct sunlight). While it might fly off the dash in a really violent accident, so might a windshield suction cup mounted unit, especially if the windshield is broken in the accident. As a final thought, it is not only well designed, it is constructed with quality workmanship and made of quality materials.

Better than the suction cup!
What I like mostly about this product is that it makes the Garmin even more portable! We can easily switch between cars without concern about stabilizing the GPS.
This mount works very well in both of our vehicles and you don't have to worry about loss of road view. It can be set anywhere. Is very stable and has not moved through sudden stops or quick take offs.
The Garmin Portable Friction Mount is essential for using with the Garmin and then being able to hide it, so that the Garmin or any indication of a Garmin is not visible to anyone who would try to break in to the car to take it.
the plastic piece that attaches to the unit keeps breaking in the cold weather....this order only gave me the mountind bean bag for the dashboard....not included was the piece that ataches to the unit. now i have 2 bean bags and one very broken attachment.

GPS Useable Friction Mount
When I got my GPS unit I didn't like the idea of having to permanently mount the unit on my windshield. I found this unit but I was skeptical that this unit will stay put while driving. To make the story short, I was wrong. I tested the unit by installing my GPS on it. Drove the vehicle with this mount on my dash, intentionally make hard left and/or right turns. This dash mount stays put. The backing of this unit is tacky enough to hold the mount in place.
I purchased this mount for my Garmin Nuvi 1450 and it works great. I was really irritated with the window suction cup that my GPS came with because it would constantly fall off the window, and I would be unable to re-stick it to my window while driving. I place this to the left of my Jetta 2010 and it sits securely there and does not move. This product rotates 360 degrees allowing me to move it in whatever position that is needed. I am very pleased with my purchase, and it is priced just right.
