New Jack Swing at its best
The late 80s and early 90s will forever be remembered as a time of great musical innovation. The best we can do with the past is reminisce and this CD is a great accompaniment of that. Teddy Riley and the guys set a trend that been hard to follow. With this particular CD they went so far where no other has gone. For all those past 20 years my favorite remains to be "Piece Of My Love", I can never get enough of this track.

New Jack started with this album
New jack started with this album. I don't even know where to start to explain how great this album is.....teddy riley is such a master of this genre and THE new jack swing pioneer of them all.
Listening to this album brought back all the great memories of my childhood: just simple things like sitting on the backseat of a car with my nephew and friends while my uncle drove us to the beach, BBQ background music, summers at swimming pools and lakes while taking a cassetteplayer, mini boxes, and the actual cassette of guy of course, with me. Ahhh. That was nice. And now, after all those years, I finally had the opportunity to purchase this album and listen to it on my discman. I literally didn't hear all of them songs for oer 15 years!!!! And not even once it crossed my mind to check whether or not this cassette had been digitalized casu qua transferred to CD.....Hm, I could have enjoyed it sooner....Anyway, great stuff!!!!

One of the GREATEST R&B efforts ever made
This right here is one of my all-time favorite r&b albums EVER..this is where the legend of Teddy Riley also known as T.R. and the creator of the new jack swing really began to define itself or in this case himself..Teddy is completely brilliant here, mixing the r&b and hip-hop beats perfectly and showing us how the new jack swing is done...released in 1988 Teddy was working with everyone and had the music industry in an uproar...he was the hottest producer at the time and this album showcases that and Aaron Hall's vocals as well...Aaron Hall is why R.Kelly even existed..R.Kelly completely bit this man's swagger, vocal stylings and riffs...and I'm sure this album was a big reason why...the stuff is mostly up tempo although the ballads are incorporated to give the album some balance..this is the type of album that would make you sweat at the club because you were not moving off that dance floor until the DJ changed the record...a 10 star classic...my top five off of this one are:
Groove Me
I Like
Goodbye Love
Teddy's Jam
You Can Call Me Crazy
I would definitely do business with you in the future.
I received my package on time and in great condition.

Three talented GUYS. 3 1/2 stars for the genesis of NEW JACK
Call Teddy Riley a mastermind for creating what would become one of the most popular sounds in R&B history, New Jack. Guy's self-titled debut is where that sound generated from. With their hits from this album which included "I Like", "Groove Me" and "Piece of My Love", there is no wonder why this sound became as popular as it did; the public just ate it up. This album is filled with songs that you can dance to and also resurface a slew of positive memories. In fact, the vast majority of these numbers are fast in tempo. Teddy Riley seemed to focus more so on the production of this album than the lyrics. What makes me say that? Well, some of the songs don't have many lyrics, but all of the tracks are very experimental (especially for that time, circa 1988). This album sounds dated from start to finish, but that doesn't necessarily serve as a problem because times do change, and believe me, The "New Jack" era had its heyday.
There is no filler on this compilation, but there are good songs and there are some songs that exceed good. "Spend the Night" and "Goodbye Love" are good at best. "Goodbye Love" is one of the few ballads found here. Aaron Hall has an incredible singing voice and he shines on every number. He does well with the lead vocals on "Goodbye Love." In fact, the other members don't hold a candle to Hall's vocals here or anywhere else on this album. They knew what they were doing when they made him the lead vocalist. "Don't Clap...Just Dance" and "You Can Call Me Crazy" are pretty good moments on the album, but the best songs were definitely released to radio. My favorite song is "Piece of My Love" because I love ballads, this song was not over-produced, and Hall sings the heck out of this song. The hook is great as well. "I Like" was a huge hit; I can still remember hearing it on the radio constantly. Teddy was very, very experimental on this track; I don't know how many instruments he toyed with on this song, but, somehow, it works. "Groove Me" was also very popular in the late 80s and early 90s. This song is so easy to dance to and the hook is simply infectious.
This album is a must for music lovers. It is by no means a perfect album but because there is history connected to it, your music collection would be remiss without it.
Mikeisha's Top 5
1. "Piece of My Love"
2. "Groove Me"
3. "I Like"
4. "Don't Clap...Just Dance"
5. "Teddy's Jam"

Longing for old school...
For years I've been wanting to collect songs from the early 90's. I just happen to be browsing through Amazon and saw this Cd for a very reasonable price and I could not resist it. The Cd came quickly and I have been jamming every since. What I also love about buying from Amazon they tend to tell you what others bought when they make a purchase; which put me in touch with songs I had long forgotten! I am very pleased with both the product and the services of Amazon. Don't pass it up!!!!!

The Birth Of New Jack Swing
Back in the late 80's early 90's New Jack Swing was dominating the R&B charts, a subgenre blending R&B with Hip Hop beats. We all owe it to Teddy Riley that invented the genre one year prior to this when he produced Keith Sweat's debut album Make It Last Forever but he would be perfecting his invention with Guy's debut album from 1988 with a band that were singing far too more uptempo's then Sweat ever did which worked better with it's tough sound. He was also a member of this trio together with Timmy Gatling and Aaron Hall and thus having more impact on the sound then before. Like aformentioned, most songs are uptemopo's here, and who can forget "Groove Me" and the super catchy "Teddy's Jam" or "I Like" but that's not all this album has to offer, sweet ballads like "Piece of My Love" or "Goodbye My Love" pretty much make up for the abundance of uptempos. The rest of the songs are all good aswell, infact It's listenable throughout without skipping anything.
Although New Jack Swing is yesterdays's news and most of the songs are very retro it would have a huge impact on music at the time and inspiriring countless of copycats aswell as Riley expanding his genre and populizing it with Bobby Brown'sDon't Be Cruel that became a major crossover, something that Guy's album never managed. However, it goes back to the time when R&B really was R&B and not Pop and it's consumers mostly being of the same race. This album is a blueprint and would be recommended for anyone interested in exploring New Jack Swing or is a music collector. So what happened after?, Guy released another album The Future in 1990 before disbanding (later reuniting) that album wasn't bad but there were simply too many simular sounding bands out there at the time that it didn't stand out. Riley continued producing and founded Blackstreet, produced MJ's Dangerous and also discovered producers the Neptunes. 5 stars. Check it out.

Nothing but a good time
Guy first album without a doubt is one of the standard's of New Jack Swing. Along with New Edition's Heartbreak, Bobby Brown's Don't Be Cruel and Al B. Sure's In Effect this is an essential album. The up-tempo party numbers Groove Me, I Like and Teddy's Jam defined new jack swing at it's best and both of the slow cuts Goodbye Love and Piece Of My Love are classic.

The album that defined a genre.
Producer Teddy Riley with Aaron Hall and Timothy Gatling invented the New Jack Swing genre with this album. Pick it up and see why. Teddy Riley as a 19 year old produced the hip-hop classic; "Doug E. Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew featuring Slick Rick: "The Show" using the Inspector Gadget cartoon theme song as a hook laced over a jazzy funk shuffle beat and with the raging success of this 12" hit Riley invented a new type of jazzy shuffle funk that became known as the new jack swing. Riley further established his new style with the huge hit record from his r&b group Guy's debut, a single called: "Groove Me."
This album is simply fun, enthusiastic, and great urban music. The only sub-par tracks are: "My Business" and "Teddy's Jam". The remix of "Teddy's Jam" was much improved and was released as a single and was a hit back in the day.
Nevertheless this is a classic album that defined a genre. "I Like", Groove Me", and "Merry Go Round of Love" are phenomenal in the arrangement and song-writing, and both come alive with very strong vocals from lead singer Aaron Hall. Hall singing in a style heavily influenced by Charlie Wilson of The GAP Band of whom Hall was and is admittedly a huge fan of really shines on these three tracks.
Slow cuts: "Goodbye Love" and "Piece of my Love" are very nice efforts too but later slow jam's like: "Tease Me Tonite" and "Let's Chill" show much improvement in this area and are on Guy's second album.
To sum it up there is magic and inspiration in each track. And Riley went on from this album to become one of the most in demand and influential record producers and songwriters in the R&B industry. Even Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and L.A. and Babyface started to use swing and shuffle beats in their productions after this album became a huge triple platinum success. ENJOY!

It aint over.....the party's not over !
Im the sole controller of this merrygoround baby - merry go round of love!
Once you get on there's not tellin' what's gona happen baby....so ride this ride with me !
Brother's and sisters I am still playin these sounds in my car every day 18 years on. Guy, Bobby B, Today, Basic Black, Heavy D still going on!......there is no doubt the stuff coming out today is totally mainstream and has no soul - just trash. So I live in the past and it keeps me alive inside. I'm just so glad I grew up with this. This was the album which started it all for me......sure there was B Brown, but the GUY album took it to a whole new level. Groove me is still my ultimate track......The party ain't over for me - and it never will be.

Hello New Jack Swing!
This is a great CD for a party! Nearly all of the songs make you want to dance. It's beats are infectious and Aaron Hall's vocals are the best!
One of the greatest R&B albums ever. Teddy combined all the elements from James Brown, Gap Band, Jam & Lewis, and the D.C. Go Go movement to create a sound that defined an era. Actually the "new jack swing" beat was created by James Brown, but later brought to the forefront by Janet's "Nasty". So technically "Nasty" is actually the first "new jack swing" song. The ballads on the album are just as great as the uptempo songs.
This is the blueprint album of a majority of New Jack Swing, with all tunes being original and catchy that cover uptempos down to ballads, in a God-like fashion. A definite first purchase.

Music that brings back memories and tears to my eyes...
So I was checking out the Billboard Top 100 site and started listening in on snippets of songs from certain eras. One of them was the 80s and I luckily came across Guy's "Groove Me". Holy Sh*t!!! I had been wondering who the hell sang that song for the longest time since I was a little kid. I was in 3rd grade when I first heard it on the radio and rarely heard it thereafter.
Its a shame that the younger generation does not appreciate the New Jack Swing sound that was spawned by Guy (nor do they even know who they are) because they really paved the way for Urban Dance Music today. Call me a "hater", but I'm just not a fan of the dirty south/crunk stuff the media considers "club music". You want to talk about real club music...its all about the G-U-Y. BUY THIS ALBUM! I bought the album and singles on wax.
To this day, I still roll down my windows driving down the street blastin' Guy ..."and you can groove me...
Groove Me! Baby! Too~night!!!"
GUY, as everyone should know, is the group that started this New Jack Swing SHHH, and this is the motherfluckin thanks they get?!?! GUY: Teddy Riley, Aaron Hall, Damion Hall...the trio of all trios displayed their talents and then some on their debut album. Besides starting a new era, they created a unique blend of sounds that still sounds classic today almost 20 years later. Every song is great but Goodbye Love, Piece Of My Love, I Like, and Groove Me are the best. You Can't go wrong with this classic masterpiece.

Set the standard for the New Jack Swing sound of late '80s!
Guy's first album is so funky in many ways! This trio of Aaron Hall, Teddy Riley and Damion Hall made some solid R&B numbers. Most people say it doesn't have a live sound and is keyboard-heavy, but it has loads of melody and rhythms to it. I still love Groove Me 17 years later, even I keep saying It ain't over when the music stops, then starting dancing like crazy when Teddy Riley brings the music back on! Other favorites are I Like, You Can Call Me Crazy, the ultra funky Teddy's Jam, the smooth Piece of My Love and Goodbye Love and others. Most of them were hits, but one other song I like is Round and Round, which I followed its run up the charts from No. 96 R&B to its peak at No. 23. Round has just as rollicking a sound to it. And it came right after that huge hit Groove Me. This album's heavy on the beats, as Teddy brings his signature sound to the group! It would be the same sound he would later give to Michael Jackson's Dangerous album. Aaron Hall has such soulful singing over these challenging songs. This is still a favorite to this day and has influenced a lot of the R&B and hip-hop artists that are out today. I hope that Guy makes another funky album in the future and get past their group issues. The music is what matters and they succeeded with this debut!

It's a 5 star bonanza!!!
(True Story) I first discovered the R & B Extraordinaire Guy when I purchased my 88 Buick Lesabre from an Impound lot in DC. It was in the trunk in which I also found the book The Way of the Ninja: Secret Techniques. Needless to say I am now a highflying kick ass ninja who listens to Guy in his Leisure time. I modeled my flat-top after all 3 members, except i customized the back with my initials M.C.W. and I even wear colorful attire when it's just me and the cats. Let me tell you the key to a successful date
1. wear something that stands out, bright in colors i.e. a Le Tigre rainbow stripe V-Neck will really 'wow' the ladies.
2. On the drive to Mcdonalds play the slammin track "Groove Me" and you will have her in a state of extasy.
3. Sing along (if you have a great singing voice such as myself) or lip along and look her in the eyes while you do it.
4. let her know your haircut cost $68 and that you are a very important business man (I am, but you'll probably have to lie)
5. Buy her an apple pie and a sunday to show her how much you care.
Well fellas, If this doesn't get you to home plate then you are probably uglier than Joey Buttafuco and I can't help you there, might I recommend plastic surgery? Guy is better than R Kelly, Usher, and Keith Sweat x 10000000000. Do yourself a service and purchase this record.

Where New Jack Began.....
When I was 20 years old, on a trip to Canada, the radio kept playing this toon, which was slammin'. After I had found ouy that the group was called 'GUY', and the toon was called 'Groove Me', I went to the Mall and brought the LP. Thus began my Love affair with Swing Beat(better known as New Jack Swing). In time I would pick up any single/LP produced By Teddy Riley(From Jane Childs'I don't wanna fall in Love, to Hammers'Pumps'N' Bumps') Musically this is a great CD,and time has not dilluted it's appeal. In an interview I read teddy said the New Jack Swing sound was a mix of Gospel, Blues, R&B and Jazz. If you listen to 'Groove Me' you can hear the Gospel sounding hammond like organ pounding away in the background. From this we go straight into Teddys Jam, which is a great dance Instrunmental.(If you can find the remix, cop it, as this is extended, and funkier!!!)Apart from the musical funk on show, this CD introduced the world to Aaron Hall, and even the detractors of this genre would have to concede that most of the singers in this field could SANG(not this sing...eg:Basic Black!)
Lyrically, there nothing much going on apart from the normal'Girl I need you, Spend the Night wit me' kind of thing, but the whole point of New Jack was the Groove.
If you fancy some 90's funk, go on.dive in
