Book drags it down
I think this is one of the least successful Harry Potter movies, but's mainly the book's fault. Rowling was trying to copy the success of PHILOSOPHER'S STONE, but hadn't figured out how to scale it up to a big series yet. So once again we have a story that ends up with
(1) Harry and a best friend figuring out how to get in a trap door
(2) The best friend getting waylaid halfway through and sending Harry away.
(3) Harry confronting an evil wizard underground.
Other problems:
To an adult reader/viewer, Lockhart is an obvious fraud from the start, yet it takes everybody in the story forever to catch on. Branaugh fleshed him out a little, but he's still tiresome.
So Harry and Ron think it's OK to put drugs in candy as part of their investigation?
So Hermione turns herself into a cat by accident and it takes several weeks to wear off. And nobody in the school administration asks how it happened (if they did, and found out about the drug angle, the trio would probably be expelled)
So Ginny is depressed and alienated, and neither her brother Ron nor the perceptive Hermione notices anything. Doesn't that make them look insensitive?

Better than I expected.
The box arrived on time and in perfect condition. The artwork is beautiful and the extra material is very addicting. I cannot wait for the other movies!
I got this for my Fiancé for Christmas to replace her old VHS. She was really happy to finally have the DVD copy. It was shipped quickly and for free since it was from Amazon and I was signed up for the free shipping thing. You might want to look into that if you buy a lot! I think it was something like $75 for the year for free shipping for everything from Amazon and you can usually find whatever you want from them and get free shipping and if it's $5 each time that will add up quickly!

Chamber of secrets Ultimate Edition
This is a review for the ultimate edition. My biggest complaint is "Why didn't this come out sooner!" I love it. I was waiting for a few years to buy the movies hoping an extended version would come out. Last year I caved and finally bought hp year 1 and 2 but I was hoping that eventually there would be an extended version. I love the books a lot more and I was hoping any extended scenes would make it closer to the book. My hope was right. The scenes that were added did make the movie closer to the book. Why in the world did they take them out in the first place?!!! It's only 13 minutes more but so worth it. And I could be wrong but I am pretty sure I detected some touch ups. The first touch up was in Diagon Alley when Hermonie magically fixed his glasses. Also my favorite touch up was when Malfoy called Hermonie a Mudblood for the first time. At last I hear some gasps from the Griffindor Quiditch team. I would get so annoyed at my copy during that part saying "in the book the team is outraged why didn't they show that in the movie." Now they seem to have added some gasps that are not in my other version.....These touch ups are in the extended version...I have not viewed my theatrical version and nor do I intend to.
My sister bought year 1 and 2 when they first came out in the special edition formats. I realized right away that this special features disk (3) is the same as her special edition disk which came out in what 2003. I reviewed everything on that disk I could and tried to access the dvd rom play version of the disk. I don't understand dvd roms...I never have. I tried to access it and it would not work. As near as I can tell, it accesses a site on the internet which may not be around anymore. That is what my hubby said and he's the computer wiz. But he never looked at it he only went by what I told him. I was very sad that I could not get it to work though. I have not reviewed the very last disk which I'm assuming is newer information. It looks like there is a show about creating the world of Harry potter and it's going to be split up for each year/version. Like I said I haven't reviewed it but I look forward to it. Warner Brothers Why didn't you come out with this earlier?!
Excellent movie-it took a while to get to me but it was worth the wait

Disappointing plot and effects
This second installment in the Harry Potter series has some fun moments. I love the character of Gilderoy Lockhart. He's well played and adds humor to the movie. Hagrid's character also gets some more development.
I'm not as crazy about the plot. It's a bit too convoluted, and much of it is never really explained well (even after watching "Half-Blood Prince," I still don't understand how Voldemort could have controlled Ginny Weasley or lived through a book). Dobby was really annoying. He's way too dramatic and a sadomasochist to boot. Would anybody really believe that programming a ball to attack and almost kill Harry Potter was really going to succeed in keeping him away from Hogwarts? It just doesn't add up.
Also, the basilisk and spiders were somewhat disappointing and pretty dull. The spiders aren't as exciting as Shelob in Lord of the Rings. The basilisk was somewhat believable, but sometimes looked like a big movie prop. Maybe a special edition could be released with better monster designs.
Overall, this is probably tied with "Half-Blood Prince" as my least favorite in the series. It's definitely worth watching if you like the Harry Potter movies, but should have been much better.

A better experience.
I bought this for my girlfriend who is a total Harry Potter fan. We watched this together and I was immediately struck by the sound design, which is superior to the previous blu-ray release. The video transfer is exceptional as well, as good or better than the previous release. The extra scenes in the extended edition were interesting and did not take away from the film. In fact, I thought they provided more depth and I found myself enjoying the film more than previous viewings. It's nice that you are given the option of choosing between the two versions of the film. The other added benefit of this ultimate edition release is the documentary. The second part of the documentary is fantastic and more than what I was expecting. Excellent release and well worth the cost!

A Collectors Edition worth collecting!
I first bought the Sorcerers Stone BluRay collectors edition. After watching it I immediately went back to the store and bought "Chamber" in the collector edition. Its is worth every penny to me!
In today's BD/DVD world where everything has extended, added, edited, special features, director's cuts etc... this movie is actually an improvement on what is already a very entertaining movie. There are additional scenes that actually add to the story. Those of us that have read all the books often get a bit caught up in the differences between the books and the movie. The additional footage fills in a bit of what was missing.
The additional footage will be of interest to those that would like the movie to come closer to the book, and will add a little help understanding the details for those who have yet to read them.
In addition to the added content, the BluRay version is a superior visual and audio presentation. I already had the first, older BluRay edition and was instantly impressed with the video quality of the new release. I don't know what they did different but the new BDs are superior to the disks that cane in the BD "trunk" set that came out a little over a year ago.
The added (non-movie) features are entertaining also. I especially like the deleted scenes and the interviews with the main characters, but found all of the added features and the included book to be interesting and add to the experience.
If you are a HP fan, you will love the collectors editions. If you aren't yet, you just may become a big HP fan! I can't wait for the rest of the series to come out in collectors editions!

A great Blu-ray set for your collection
The fine people at Warner Brothers have done a very good job with this box set. I have both year 1 and year 2 as they were released at the same time.
The picture and sound quality are great. The main feature is on the first disc (theatrical and extended versions) and it is a little confusing that some of the material is on standard dvd, and it is EVEN more confusing to read that some of the extras which are very well done are not on any of these discs!
But the special documentary created for the Blu-ray ultimate editions is wonderful and well worth it.
If you are a completist this set will leave you scratching your head. But if you just enjoy the films then these boxed sets should find their way into your collection at some point.
Notice I did not even mention the extra booklet, or trading cards which are also in the box.

Everything I have ever wanted in a Harry Potter home video release
I made a much longer review about the Ultimate editions of the Harry Potter films in the review I posted for the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Ultimate Edition) [Blu-ray] so I am just going to go over the highlights concerning this specific film in this review. For full details on why I think the Ultimate Editions are awesome, see my Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Ultimate Edition) [Blu-ray] review.
The HD video and sound are excellent in this version of the film on blu-ray, just like they were for the other Ultimate Edition release. Yes, they are double dipping on this release (which is one of the reasons I think the price is relatively low), but I think it is worth it considering the fact that we are getting the extended edition of the film in blu-ray HD, plus an hour's long documentary with never before seen behind the scenes stuff as well.
The blu-ray disc contains both the theatrical release, and the new extended version with cut scenes put back in. This film has 13 minutes of extra footage (most never seen before). The extra footage makes a *LOT* of scenes make more sense with those scenes back in! For instance, one of the new scenes shows Harry meeting Hagrid on the stairs on his way up to his dormitory. Hagrid is holding the dead chickens which were being killed in the book. Minutes later Harry stumbled upon the Hufflepuff boy who has been petrified by the basilisk. Minutes after that, as Harry is in Dumbledore's office explaining himself, Hagrid bursts in saying he knows it couldn't have been Harry, and that he would be willing to swear so to the Ministry of magic. With the extra scene back in showing Harry and Hagrid meeting on the stairs, it suddenly becomes clear how a.) Hagrid got there so fast, b.) how Hagrid knew Harry was in trouble, c.) that Hagrid was so SURE Harry was innocent. You will encounter scenes that expand your understanding of the films like that all over the extended edition.
As for the extras, the blu-ray special features disc is the reason to buy this set. Specifically, for the hour long documentary included in each ultimate edition containing all of the behind-the-scenes stuff I have been wanting to see for such a long time now! They also do in depth interviews, and show stuff we have never seen before. I LOVED watching all of the green screening stuff they showed concerning Quidditch, the flying car, etc.
I love the set, I love the price, I love the quality of the films in high definition blu-ray, and I love the extras. 5 stars, for this edition, no question.

Review of Chamber of Secrets ULTIMATE EDITION Blu-ray
To start off this isn't a review of the movie itself, by now you should have already formed an opinion of the movie for yourself or from other reviews of just the film. This is a review for the Ultimate Edition.
Two words: Absolutely Amazing!
This isn't just some scam from Warner Bros to get a few more dollars squeezed out of the Harry Potter movies, this is brand new and refreshing. Warner Bros packaged this set to be (or what appears to be) the last Harry Potter set to be had. Everything that you could want in a collectors set it included here.
The booklet included is surprisingly well done. The book keeps with the theme of the special feature exclusive to the ultimate edition. For example, in the Chamber of Secrets edition the booklet is all about the characters and their development, both at the beginning of the series and how they have evolved through the years. Included are stills from the movie, pictures of the theme (ie. characters, buildings, sets), and my favorite... concept art.
As for the character cards that are included they aren't anything super special but at the same time they aren't cheaply done. The cards are solid and printed well. I could see where some people will find them very satisfying and a highlight of the edition.
The thing that I was most impressed with, however, was the presentation. Finally someone released a special edition of a film and made it presentable and convenient. The boxes are made to look like books that fold open and are neatly packed on the inside. Also on the inside of the book there are images from the film, making it look very much like a collector's item. Warner Bros has really set themselves up nicely for the release of the next six of these.
Overall I was extremely pleased with this edition of the movie and cannot wait for the rest to be released.

Harry Potter Scores a second O
After the first succesful movie Harry Potter has again got a perfect score. With new magic and new friends, such as the slightly obnoxious Colin Creevey, and Ron's youngest sibling Ginny Weasley. The movie starts you out with Harry again with the Dursleys living his days wishing time would go faster when a slightly annoying but fun little elf named Dobby comes and visits and gets Harry into a load of trouble in an attempt to keep him away from Hagwarts. His attempt is thwarted by the Weasley brothers who save Harry from the Dursley's oppresion. It was hard fro me to comprehend that Dobby was a CGI for he looked so real and lifelike. The animators are really talented succesfully animating a pheonix and even a giant serpent. Radcliffe is back and as good as ever as Harry Potter. Richard Harris has also returned with a slightly hoarse voice but his performance is as good as ever. The special effects are amazing I don't care what magic they do it's amazing. this movie has again surpassed the book in both action and story. Director Chris Columbas truly has the knack for this making a great adaptation once again. The fight with the basilisk has been redefined and made a full amazing battle instead of a fast swing the sword battle as shown in the book. Now for the bonus features I just got to say. Thank you so much for improving it. I had no trouble whatsoever finding what I wanted finding the deleted scenes with great ease and even some interesting interviews. they seem to have decided to actually put in things that people actually care about as opposed to things no one cares about. Again great movie keep it up!

Director Is Still Trying To Adapt the Book
Like the first, the sequel suffers from being too long and literally trying to adapt the book. It worked for Lord of the Rings and they STILL cut out a lot from the books (though they did embelish a little in Two Towers by bringing in the Elves at Helm's Deep but I digress). The young cast has aged a little, clearly for the young men (they're voices are starting to get deeper). Though, to me anyways as I haven't read the books in a while, it gets a little tiring of Ron Weasley being reduced to the comedic sidekick. I know he is one, but not all need to be used for comedic relief. The elder cast is still perfect for their respective roles and Kenneth Branagh is excellent as the ego-centric Lockhart. Again, they could've trimmed up a few things; Harry didn't need to look at every little thing in the Weasley's home (despite the fact that he's not used to magic homes), Ron's slug scene could've been eliminated, some characters that're important in the novel (like Justin and Colin [who at least is important in later books]) are glanced over and are only petrified as that's what happens to them in the book. Still no Peeves (the one character I'm glad they decide to cut out as he adds nothing to the story) and instead of they're ghostly Magical History teacher giving the speech on the Chamber, its McGonagall, which I think is a better switch as they're history teacher is hardly ever mentioned once or twice in the books anyway. Action scenes and CGI are better in this than the last, Dobby and the Basilisk being the highlights of the computer charcters. And hardly any new music from John Williams, who's music from the first film is pretty much tracked to this.
The item in question arrived here on time and in one peice. They were prompt and no problems arose

Not bad if you can moderate your expectations
This is a fun movie even though it suffers from some of the vices of the first movie in the series and not participating in the virtues of the subsequent films.
There are some things that are better in this film than the first. In particular, Daniel Radcliffe evidences enormous improvement as an actor. And because there is less set up in this one than in the first film, they are able to delve more directly into storytelling. And as in the first film, Hogwarts is rendered memorably. Still, the film is in many ways a disappointment. Chris Columbus's direction was as weak in the second as in the first and either he or the film's editor had to take responsibility for the terrible pacing in many of the film's scenes. On every level, all subsequent films would be better directed and edited. One might quibble over the script, but not the direction and editing. Future films would not drag in individual scenes like in this one.
I do, however, have a lot of problem with the script for this film. Any adaptation of a novel by a movie has to make compromises. Still, ultimately the script has to function as an independent entity. The problem here was the abrupt and inelegant shifts from one scene to another, with no foreshadowing of what would come later or thematic repetition. Few parts of the screenplay resonate with other parts of the screenplay. Now, this very possibly is not the fault of the screenwriter. Directors and editors can radically alter screenplays during the course of filming. so unless we could see the original screenplay and to what degree it was preserved in the filming it is hard to blame the screenwriter. We blame the director. If what was filmed was the writer produced, a writer should have been brought in to fix it. I suspect that the director made changes. Who can say for sure. But one thing is for sure: the film has almost no narrative flow. And as an adaptation of a novel is does a poor job of maintaining its key themes.
Luckily, the movies got much, much better. THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN is by any standard a great film, the best directed film in the series, while the later films were buoyed by very substantive stories. The movies are not nearly as good as the books. That is pretty much par for the course. There have been very, very few movies in the history of film that were better than the novels upon which they were based, except in cases where the novels were not very to begin with.
One of the more humorous sidelights of the film was that some Russians took offense at the film, imagining that the elf Dobby was intended to look like Vladimir Putin. Some Russian lawyers for a while even contemplated taking legal action. There appears to be little justification for such an action. Whatever resemblance between Dobby and Putin would be strictly physical and Dobby in no other way would appear to refer to Putin. I personally think the easily offended lawyers needed to bash their heads a few times on their desks as penance for their silliness.

A solid follow-up that hits high on Blu-Ray!
A year after Harry Potter (Daniel Redcliffe) has found the Sorcerer's Stone, it seems like another year for Hogwart's is coming out. It seems a house-elf named Dobby (Voiced by Toby Jones) has warned Harry not to go back to school but the boy doesn't listen as he goes back to Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardy for another year for he is reunited with Ron (Rupert Grinn) and Heromine (Emma Watson). But it seems some of the students have been petrified magically by something dangerous and mysterious, some bloody threats are written on the wall and of course a creature is on the loose. However despite all this stuff, it could lead to a mysterious Chamber of Secrets where the stuff of the past has been hidden from students for many years yet Harry has to find out.
A superb second installment of a fantastic fantasy saga from Chris Columbus is quite faithful to the J.K. Rowling Book. The film reunites Maggie Smith as Professor Mcgaragle, Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid, Alan Rickman as Professor Snape, and Tom Felton as Malfoy with the other cast of the first movie including new characters played by Jason Issacs as Malfoy's father, Miriam Margoyles as Professor Sprout and Kenneth Branagh as Gildory Lockheart. Here this installment improves over the first one with bigger pacing, more suspense and better storyline including some darkness abound as the series evolves into a bigger adventure series then ever.
This Blu-Ray offers the sharpest picture and sound quality you can imagine like being in a theater with extras like additional scenes, Interviews, Building a Scene featurette, A fun interactive classroom, trailer and film recap of year one.

One of the weaker ones
Like the first film in the series, Chamber of Secrets is one of the weakest of the six so far. Yes you can excuse them for being young, but there are other issues as well. The acting in this movie is somewhat forced, and always just a little off the mark. You can tell the actors are really trying to pay attention to their cues...reactions and lines are not natural, but either delayed or rushed.
This you can all put down to experience. I admire the HP movies for keeping the actors and letting them grow with the films...and in that sense it makes their earlier work more bearable. But unlike Sorceror's Stone, the overall filming is not that great for this one. Scenes seem choppy and cobbled together.
The movie is still quite enjoyable, with its fair moments of humor (watch for Ron and the spiders!)...it still doesn't measure up to the films after, but that's okay; in the end I find I just cannot watch the first two films as frequently.
A fun sequel to the first, this one continues to show the main characters and their growth in magic and friendship. The flashbacks, mysteries, and twists in the story make for a fun movie (especially for the first time and considering you've not read the books). I enjoyed the involvement of magical creatures, the introduction of new characters, and the fact the same actors/actresses are still here (nothing worse than someone else trying to pull off a character when you've already identified that character to someone else).

Imagination, excitement and surprising depth - Chamber of Secrets takes it up a notch!
Have no fear (unless you don't like snakes and spiders). This one is superb.
Everything about the Potter film adaptations improves in this sharp, well paced sequel to 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'. Radcliffe builds on his previous performance and reaches truly impressive heights as Harry. Emma Watson is impressive as always as Hermione. It's a tour de force of spellbinding special effects, fun turns from top notch British actors as Hogwarts employees and a cleverly plotted mystery that at once intrigues, excites and forwards our knowledge of Harry Potter's world. This film is surprisingly watchable at 160 minutes and definitely raises the stakes for the franchise, meeting the challenge on every level. This is, in some regards a kid's movie, but there is a lot going on to keep mature minds engaged - not the least that the film is genuinely scary - even with it's PG rating. If you can't handle spiders, you might want to look away for around 10 minutes in the middle. The most intriguing aspect of the film is the way it develops the depth of Harry's character sharpening our interest for future installments and the clever commentary on racism in the 'mugborn' subplot raises the themes in the whole series to a new level. In short, the ideal combination of J K Rowling and the filmmakers combine to produce an exciting and authentic translation of her novel.

Brilliant sequel!
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) is an excellent follow-up to a great film. It's fun and more entertaining than the original!
The film stars Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint (whose voices have lowered since the last film) and Emma Watson. Many familiar characters return and a handful of new ones appear for the first time. Kenneth Branagh is especially funny as the egotistical Professor Lockhart.
The story continues and is more engaging. However, it still maintains the familiar atmosphere of the first film. It is very good entertainment! 5 stars.
The movie works just fine, I hate the special features. It leads you into games instead of the actual special features. I should've just bought the one disc set if I knew this would happen.
When I had ordered this item I was a little hesitant because it was used. I didn't want to pay full price for it and figured I would give it a try. After receiving this item I was very pleased. It comes to you as if it was brand new. No scratches or anything. Very pleased will order again especially from the particular seller.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Widescreen Edition)
The DVD was in good condition. The plastic case it came in is very thin and not the typical DVD case that you would find in the stores, but although this is disappointing, I had expected this as it was a complaint I had read in the Customer Reviews before I made my purchase.
The whole harry potter series of books and film is all about witchcraft. This goes against Jesus and the Bible. If you want to read a book, read the Bible. For a film watch "The Gospel Road"(1973)This great film stars Robert Elfstrom as Jesus and Johnny Cash providing narration and song. Best of all there is no flying brooms or witchcraft of any kind. Veggie Tales is also good, but you must edit out any scenes of the cucumber. This is too suggestive for children.

Entertaining, And Ranks Fairly High Among The HP Films
I thought this was better than the first Harry Potter movie because it didn't overdo the action scenes as the first film did, and the special-effects were better. It's not "Lord Of The Rings," of course, but it's still decent entertainment, even for us older folks. It got even better with the third installment, which has been my personal favorite of the lot.
The special-effects are fun to watch and it was interesting to see how the three young stars - Daniel Radcliff ("Harry"), Emma Watson ("Hermione") and Rupert Grint ("Ron") have physically matured since the first movie. All of a sudden, the boys have reached puberty and their voices are changing. "Ron" squeaks half the time he talks!
As with many modern-day, big-budget films, the visuals, the special-effects and the surround sound are all astounding. It's definitely entertaining for all ages with no worries about language, and the Blu-Ray editions eleveate this DVD another star. The transfers on all of them, from what I've seen and read, are fantastic.
Thanks for the great service, as I had lost my other copy of the DVD, and this is a good replacement.
