[+] 2.0 Sucks because it doesn't suck
I got this yesterday, put it together, and tried to use it...NO SUCTION. I thought I must have done something wrong, so I went through the booklet, no, everything was set up as directed. It picks up NOTHING. There is NO suction from the attachments either. Waste of money! I ended up taking apart the old vacuum and fixing it; I'd bought this one because I only needed it for a few months until I returned to my home...I figured, cheap, sure, but it's for a few months...it would have to work for that long. WRONG. It does not work AT ALL.

[+] 6.0 Hoover Tempo Widepath U5140-900
I ordered this vacuum, believing that it had a headlight and a full bag indicator light as was shown in the product information. When I received the vacuum it had neither the headlight or the full bag indicator light. It looks like a much cheaper version of the vacuum represented in the advertisement. The vacuum works fine, but I still feel as though I have been ripped off, by false representation.

[+] 8.0 Hoover tools easy to use.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that the hose is permanently installed in the vacuum and makes using the tools quicker and easier along with good suction. My old Hoover's hose was separate and had to be inserted at bottom of machine. Good change. Did not find the noise level offensive. Good buy for the money.

[+] 10.0 Great vacuum
Very powerful suction, easy to use, probably identical in quality to much more expensive machines. The tools are convenient, the cord is long, even the switch is convenient. A really great deal.

[+] 10.0 Great vacuum for the money
You could say dirty floors are my pet peeve. With that stated, I also say this vacuum is a great value. I have had this vacuum for about 8 months and now use it as my main push vacuum (I also use a Roomba). It is easy to maneuver, cleans the carpet well, and is lightweight enough to use on stairs. In addition to the Hoover Tempo and Roomba, I also have a 15 year old Hoover WindTunnel which is too heavy for me to use on stairs and a 6 year old Kenmore Elite Canister vacuum (rated a best buy in Consumer Reports when I purchased it) which does not pick up dust and dirt as well as this Hoover Tempo.

I have a lot of tile in my home. The Hoover Tempo tends to sling as much of the dust and dirt as it picks up when I run it on the tile. So I use the Roomba instead.

As a busy mom, I do delegate chores to my kids. Vacuuming is one of the easier chores I delegate. My kids tend to be rough on vacuums. My Kenmore Elite Canister vacuum has been "broken" by my son several times - requiring several hours of repair by a disgruntled husband. This Hoover Tempo however has been used by my kids since we got it and is still working perfectly.

The cord is a little shorter than most and that can be a nuisance. I either change electrical sockets frequently or add and extension cord. Problem solved.

[+] 2.0 This is not the product you think it is!
This is not the product you think it is. The picture and schematic for this item are both WRONG. Hoover has changed the product but left the model number the same. The new revised unit is not the same old beloved vacuum to which all the reviews prior to 2010 are referring. This version is a cheap imitation of the former. This "revised" model features:

- NO Headlight
- NO Bag Indicator
- NO hose coupling dust cover
- CHEAPER plastic
- CHEAPER carpet brush
- CHEAPER hose
- SHODDIER construction
- INCORRECT user manual

It still has the same amount of suction but because of the cheaper brush it doesn't really get down into the carpet like the old one. It just glides on top over the carpet. The cheaper hose is a real problem, because if you ever suffer the misfortune of kinking the hose once you will never get it un-kinked again. The lack of headlight is not a big deal, but the picture shows it has one and some people may need this feature. The missing bag indicator means you have to keep stopping and checking the bag to see if it's full. The plastic parts are made from a cheaper flimsy plastic. This makes the unit lightweight but it also means not everything fits together properly, for instance several of the attachments are misshapen. The old unit used to have a dust cover so when you used the hose it would not spew dust into the room (because the brush keeps turning). The "revised" model has no dust cover so you better get ready for a face full of dirt if you pull the hose out over a dusty area. The general construction of the unit is sub-par compared to the old version. In fact, the user manual is still from the old version, meaning the assembly instructions are incorrect for the revised version. You will have to figure out for yourself where to route the power cord on the rear of the chassis.

The vacuum does still work, has strong suction, and works well on carpet if you put it on the lowest height and really dig into the carpet. But you can probably find something better for your money. And Amazon should update their product photos!

[+] 8.0 Great for the price.
We picked this up after reading that this was recommended by Consumer Reports. It works way better than my old vacuum and is not that much louder than the old one either. If you've researched this at other places like I did, you may see that it comes with a check bag indicator...well, it doesn't. I expected a check bag indicator and called Hoover when the vacuum arrived without one. The Hoover rep said that the newer models don't have an indicator. This vacuum has the switch on the body, I never realized how convenient the foot switch was until I got this. I usually have a baby in one arm so a foot switch would be more convenient.

[+] 8.0 Hoover Tempo
It works great, good suction. The on/off switch is located on the body instead of the handle. This makes you reach down to stop, which is not good in tight spaces. With one hand holding the handle and the other holding the cord, you can suck up the wrong things easily. The cord does not go up high on the handle, it is high on the body so you have to hold in one hand to keep it out of the way. You have to assemble the handle to the body when it arrives. No big deal, but you can tell that Hoover is saving a few bucks on assembly and shipping size which results in a inconvenient switch and cord. It is light weight and handles well. I got a great price on Amazon.com.

[+] 10.0 As you get older
My mother-in-law is in her 80's so I try to help out where I can. A while back I offered to vacuum her place. She had a bagless dirt devil that she was unable to use due to limited mobility in one of her hands. The cup that held the dirt was even hard for me to change without significant effort. We bought her the Hoover Tempo U5140-900 upright and solved her problem. Yes, she again has to change a bag once in a while, but at least she can use it. It is light weight and easy to use. The price was very economical too. She has regained a little measure of independence.

[+] 2.0 disappointed
I just bought this vaccume cleaner and delivered yesterday from Amazon. I ordered new one but it looked like used item which was returned from customer.
This vaccume cleaner leaves little hairballs and fuzzballs in its path so I tried to clean them using a hose but hose is way too short! When I turned it off, I see little stuff like cat litter and dust on the floor dropped from Vaccume cleaner.
This is useless so I just returned to Amazon today.

[+] 6.0 Mixed Opinion
The vacuum cleans up really well... But, it is all cheep plastic. It would be great for a small apartment without kids or animals. It is an inexpensive machine so I was expecting ad "disposable" vacuum anyway. I just thought the parts would last for more than six months. My biggest complaint is that the hose is very, very cheep. It bends so that it blocks all suction and it stays that way even after the vacuum is turned off. It just needs a better hose.

[+] 10.0 my favorite vacuum ever!
We purchased the vacuum roughly 2 years ago after reading the Consumer Report that ranked it third, behind Kirby and another ridiculously expensive vacuum "system"... This is a really good vacuum without all the frills (ie, i don't think that mine has a light...). It gets the cat hair well, and the original belt just broke a couple of days ago. This replaced the $150 vacuum that we got just a couple years before - we are much more pleased with this than the more expensive one.

[+] 10.0 Worth every penny
The old vacuum died, a 10 year old Dirt Devil I think. This is the new Vac. Either this one is that good or the old one was that bad. Even when new the previous vac didn't get 2/3 of the clean I get with this Hoover. Really amazing.

I've done very few reviews, but I do read them to help with my decision. The review quantity / quality for this machine seemed to mandate clicking the buy button. 1600+ and over 4 stars? Are you kidding? With that in mind, this is my 5 star review. The crowd is right, this Hoover really works.

[+] 10.0 My Search Is Over
I have owned a small motel for the past 8 years and have tried way too many vacuums and wasted way too much money. I had some of the priciest. I've had bagless and bagged. None of them did the job. The Hoover US140-900 Tempo Widepath is the best yet. This is my second one. The first lasted 1 & 1/2 years at hard labor before the wheels fell off. With the heavy workload I subject it to, that is a miracle. It performed well the entire time. Great suction, self propelled, easy to change bags and all the attachments one could need at a terrific price. My trial & error days are over. I'm sticking with this one as long as Hoover keeps making it.

[+] 10.0 WOW!
The Hoover Tempo is a Little Powerhouse.
I was shocked especially at the price.
After reading all the reviews and going back and forth on bag or bagless I decided on this model.
I had been thru a ton of Vacs in recent years and was largely very dissappointed at the results.
Not to mention the money spent on some real very expensive vacs that really did not perform as advertised.
When I purchased this vac I did not have high hopes,it is a Hoover and the reviews were for the most part very positive.
It arrived within a few days all in order and after putting it together I started it up and "WOW" this little machine ROCKS. It does a better job than most Vacs I have had ever.(Exception my Old Hoover my Mom gave me)
It is powerful sucks up dirt in a single pass does both carpet and bare floor and it is lightweight for going up and down stairs.
The only downside is the hose attachment is a bit short.
But who cares as the performance of the Vac itself has sold me on yet another one soon.
For the price and the features this is in my humble opinion a "WorthWhile" purchase.
Of course everyones tastes are different.
Being a Single Guy with not a lot of time to clean I Love this Vac.
Try it YOU WILL LIKE IT!

[+] 10.0 Hoover U5140-900 Tempo upright vacuum
I have had this vacuum cleaner for approximately a month and have been very impressed with it's cleaning power and ease of use. The first time I used it, I thought of a self-propelled lawnmower as it was so effortless to push. I had just vacuumed with a different vacuum and was so surprised at the difference in appearance in the carpet. I found it quite easy to use and effective on my tile flooring also. With former cleaners I had felt a reduction in suction when using the attachments so was amazed at the cleaning ability with the attachments on. I couldn't resist vacuuming the sofas and lampshades, just for the fun of using it.

[+] 10.0 Cheap, simple and powerful
I've had this vacccum cleaner for a little over a year and I have to say it's one of the best investments I've made! I had a more "modern" vaccum prior to this but after reading the reviews, I wanted to try this one out. It doesn't have any "special" features but it is so powerful and it really sucks everything up on carpet and hard floors. I ended up buying my parents one for Christmas as well, and they're really happy with it too. For being under $100, it is worth every penny!

[+] 6.0 Product Pictures Incorrect
My wife has used the vacuum several times and is satisfied with its cleaning ability. However, using the hose attachments is almost useless due to the shortness of the hose.

I was disappointed in my purchase since the pictured vacuum cleaner had a light. When I received it there was a black cover where the light should have been. I acknowledge that the information did not specify a light but the picture did. I called Amazon and their representative offered me several options to rectify the problem. I was extemely pleased with the representative's offered options to correct the problem.

I would also like to point out that I have looked at another product and again the pictured item and the model number were incorrect. The picture was for a more expensive model and the price for the model number shown was considerably more than I could purchase the item locally. This made my think that the model number was incorrect and the picture was correct. Hoping to resolve this discrepancy I called Amazon and was told the picture was incorrect. The price was for the model number shown. When I told the representative that I could purchase the product significantly cheaper at a local store, I was told that not all products offered on Amazon would be cheaper than could be purchased locally. This has caused me to question every product offered on Amazon; is the picture shown what you will get or is it of another model and you will not know this until you receive the item.

[+] 2.0 Awkward with no suction
This is an awful vacuum. The vent is placed right by the ridiculously short hose, ensuring that any time you reach with the hose, the air is blowing on the exact area you want to pick up. Floor vacuum part is virtually useless, with no suction at all.

I thought I could work around the length of the hose, but you really can't.

[+] 6.0 The missing part
This vacuum came quickly and was pretty easy to put together. The first time I used it, the belt snapped within 2 minutes. I had to buy new belts before I could see if it really worked. With the new belt in, it has run very well, so far. It did come with a missing piece that prevents me from using the hose and attachments. I hope to get that soon.

[+] 8.0 Great purchase
Have a small apartment with hardwood floors. Was looking for a vacuum that I could rely on, and found this one with such great stats. The machine will definitely pull you along. It has great suction power. Wish there was more flexibility with the tube. Otherwise an excellent purchase for the price.

[+] 2.0 Worst Vacuum I've Ever Owned!
I move around alot - pretty much yearly - and end up selling most of my belongings and buying new when I get to my new destination. I've been doing that for 12 years. This is about my 10th vacuum and it is by far the WORST I've ever owned.

On tile floors it spits debris right back out at you! I tried vacuuming up some spilled oats and it made it worse!

On carpet it's not any better! I live in an apartment with new carpet. That means lots of carpet fuzz, right? This vacuum, as you use it in a room, will leave little hairball or fuzz balls in its path. No joke. I thought at first maybe the bag was full or that the spinning things on the bottom were jammed - so I cleaned everything and tried again. Same result every single time. It's just a pathetic piece of junk.

If you don't really want your floors cleaned, then buy this.

[+] 4.0 Significant problems
No way to turn off the spinner while using hand-held attachments. The heat from the spinner partially melted our area run in three places while my wife was cleaning the sofa. Good deal on this vacuum cost us a $300 rug. If you're careful with it, though, it may be adequate.

The belt broke on third usage, but hopefully will work better with replacement.

[+] 10.0 Great deal
This is a great vacuum. I am very pleased with it.
We live in a one-bedroom apartment, so the short cord some people complained about really doesn't bother us.

[+] 10.0 A very "sucky" vacuum :)
As everyone else has reviewed, this is a solid vacuum. My only issue is that the suction is so good it tries to suck up rugs, cords, etc! Cord could be longer, but my place is small so its fine for me.

[+] 10.0 Great vacuum for the price!
I've been using this vacuum now to clean up at our church for a year and a half.

It picks up better than the comercial vacuums we had before and has been just as durable.
The only drawback to this vacuum over a commercial vacuum is the length of the cord. It is standard length for home use. I have to use a 10 foot extension cord when I use this at church so I can vacuum without having to move to a new plugin every little bit.

I wish I had bought 2 of these as the price has gone up on these little gems.

The hose attachment works OK... probably not quite as good as the commercial vacs but close.

I hope they keep making this model as I fully intend to buy another to replace the one I am using now if/when it finaly breaks or dies. At 1/4 of the price of the commercial vacuums we were using this is a no brainer.

[+] 8.0 it sucks pretty good
Consumer Reports rating and Amazon's low price definitely made this a best bang-for-the-buck buy!!! We've had it for several weeks now and are VERRRRY pleased with its cleaning abilities - so far, so good. Does a very good job on carpet and rugs, which is what we bought it for. Typical upright problems with getting under chairs, tables, etc. but not moreso than others we've had. A little cheaply made in areas of no stress but still definitely worth the price, definitely would buy again and definitely would recommend it.

[+] 10.0 Great little vaccuum!
With three spaniels running about my house, regular vacuuming is a necessity. Having had it with our mini vacuum from college, my husband and I set aside a few hundred dollars and started our research into the best model. We were SO surprised that after reading quite literally thousands of reviews on Amazon, consumer reviews, and blogs, we were left with this reasonably priced model and the, somewhat less reasonably priced, Dyson Animal. Once we realized that for the price of the latter we could use our budget to get both this Hoover vacuum and a carpet steam cleaner, we knew the decision was made.

And now? Couldn't be happier with the Hoover Vacuum (or the Steam Cleaner for that matter, but that's for another review)! Pushing my old vaccuum across the floor used to be uncomfortable, but this one is lightweight and almost self-propells across the carpet; I feel like I'm holding it back from racing across the room! It also takes about a third of the time as my old vacuum and does a much superior job. The Hoover's enthusiasm for cleaning my floors has actually given me more drive to vaccuum more often, as it is pretty fun to 'drive,' and leaves my floors looking flawless.

I purchased replacement belts and bags when I bought the vacuum, both of which are so cheap that it will be a very long time till it ever reaches the price of the dyson, and, call me old fashioned, but I find the bagless vacuums generally end up awkward to empty, where unclipping one bag and putting in another is a ten second ordeal that doesn't spill any dirt on my newly cleaned floors as was a problem with my previous bagless model. It is fairly light weight, carrying it upstairs hasn't been any trouble. As for the pet hair, it's gone. My old vaccuum used to clog with hair every time it was used, and generally several times during the session, but this Hoover has never clogged, stopped, faltered, or done anything other than energetically race to clean my floors with minimal effort from me. I can't remember ever having purchased an appliance that made such a big improvement in my house that was as matinence free as this vacuum.

[+] 8.0 Good vacuum for the price
This seems like a pretty good vacuum cleaner so far if you don't want to spend a lot of money. My previous Hoover that I purchased in 2001 worked very well for 8 years and I only remember that being about $90-100, so I figure if I can get that same time out of this one or even a little less than it will be worth it. I did a lot of time consuming research on vacuum cleaners only to end up more confused as for every good review, there is a harsh negative one. I even went and tested a top rated Kenmore that was much more expensive and it was so heavy, I hated it. I hate the bagless type cleaners b/c the dust flies everywhere and is disgusting. So far, I can't think of anything really negative about this vacuum, the price was right, seems to do a good job (how do you ever really know???), and amazon shipped it super fast.

I love to vacuum since getting this. New vacuums are so powerful, I like to take advantage of it while they're new. Yes, the hose is short and I have knocked it over a few times. It's heavy (for me). The power switch is in a weird spot.

Powerful suction. I wish the tube were longer and the tools fit each other tighter.

[+] 8.0 So far so good.
I guess I know I am getting old because the last time I bought a vacuum it still had heavy metal parts. I've been using an old heavy Hoover with a transmission for the last 7 years but it just doesn't turn on anymore. I guess for the price this Hoover product does what it is supposed to. I am just not used to the feeling of cheap plastic and wonder how long it will last? The packaging was done well and I was able to find all of the pieces required from the manual before allowing my cats to take over the box. I was pleasantly surprised when I turned it on because it does have very good suction and a cool little headlamp to see in those dark corners. Perhaps I will vacuum at night now. Another reason I feel I am getting old is because I was a lot more excited about the new vacuum cleaner than my wife. She could not use the old Hoover because it was way too heavy to move around. This new Hoover is certainly much lighter and easier to move around if you are 5'4" and 100 pounds like my wife.

[+] 10.0 great for the price
I've bought two of these (both from amazon.com), gave one to my kids at college. It is simple, inexpensive, and does a great job. About 15 years ago, I had the predecessor to this model, really liked it, and it finally just wore out after many years of service. I looked for another but was disappointed that it had gone out of production. This was the closest to it (had just a few more features), and I have not disappointed; it's actually better than the previous model. The replacement bags are cheap and easy to find too.

[+] 10.0 power and value together
I am very pleased with the power and manuverability, the low price is an added bonus. The vacuum almost moves itself with such ease, that even my six year old requests to do the vacuuming, and unexpected bonus.

[+] 10.0 Perfect, For What I Needed
I only have about 300 sqft of carpet in the whole house and needed something simple to vacuum up the cat hair, no bells and whistles. Just a plain old vacuum.

[+] 2.0 Failed after one month. Warranty and customer service are poor
Bought vacuum from Amazon in December 2008. Vacuum worked fine for a little bit and then the motor started to slow down. It eventually stopped altogether. I had to unplug it for a little while before it would work again. Could not vacuum whole house without unplugging it several times. Sent vacuum at my expense to service center listed on Hoover's website in January 2009. I've been waiting for a response ever since. In March and April 2009, the service center said my vacuum had been repaired, but they had to be reimbursed first from Hoover before they sent my vacuum back to me. Now the service center doesn't return any calls or answer their phone. After I called Hoover customer service, they said I had to take it up with the service center even though the service center is listed on Hoover's website. Hoover's warranty and customer service are amazingly poor. I still don't have my vacuum and I'm out the shipping to the repair center too!

Stay away from Hoover.

[+] 2.0 Tempo Widepath is not worth it
This vacuum (purchased on Amazon) did not live up to the positive reviews here. The belt broke within a few weeks, could not get a replacement from customer service. Motor started to die down as well similar to another reviewer's experience. The suction was poor and the only way I could pick up anything was to manually use the hose with a small 3-inch wide attachment to clean the whole room with--backbreaking, inefficient, and wastes electrical (as well as my own) energy since it takes longer and makes me not want to vacuum as much. It never picked up pet hair or human hair acceptably, it was horribly loud (wear ear plugs to protect your hearing because it's piercing), and overall felt like a piece of plastic junk. It was only $40 less than the Eureka vacuum I researched and just tried today and it really beat the Tempo Widepath in terms of performance all-around. Funny, when I bought the new Eureka vacuum at Best Buy today, someone else was returning the Tempo Widepath. It did not surprise me one bit. The only thing I regret was that I did not switch out vacuums sooner and lived in the state that my carpets were in all this time. Trust me, you do not want this vacuum (my old one has been promptly dumped).
