[+] 4.0 Mediocre
I loved this vacuum at first, but less than a year later I am shopping for a new vacuum. I regularly banged out the filters to extend the life, but nothing helps. We have two kids and a husky, so we probably should have saved longer and bought something more tough.

[+] 8.0 Happy with purchase
I bought this vacuum cleaner in December 2009 after looking at various models on line. It's powerful, easy to use and tote around, and easy to empty. No complaints! It did nip the fringe of one of my area rugs, but that was really my fault. Great value for the price.

[+] 6.0 Brush roller starts grinding against unit
Pros:
-sucks in a good way
-dumping dirt is easy with canister
-auto retract cord

Con:
I've had 2 of these. Eventually both of them died the same death. The brush roller would start grinding against the housing. So it will be very loud, vibrating and pieces of the roller comes off from the grinding. I tried changing the roller band but that didn't fix it.

[+] 6.0 It looks like the product is not homogeneous
The vacuum arrived reasonably quickly, well-packaged and in condition as described. The reason I put 3 stars is the following. I purchased this vacuum because my boyfriend has the same and I tried it many times, it worked great. However the one I got seems to be extra-powered. It ate my cell phone charger (a piece of cord was on the floor), and it completely destroyed it in a second. It also will eat your carpet if you don't stay alert while vacuuming. I don't know why the same model works so differently. Both vacuums were purchased through Amazon.

This vacuum works really well. My parent's have a cat and my mom vacuums everyday without an issue. Picks up hair her old vacuum missed. The upholstery attachment doesn't work that well.

[+] 4.0 not great at all
at first i was happy with it but after a month of using it on normal conditions it just didnt pick up much and made a loud noise. took it to a service company and they wernt able to get rid of the loud noise. the connecting part for the canister broke so it has to be ducted taped and have to take it apart to clean it out. the only great thing about it, is the rewind cord. obviously im on amazon to look for a better vacuum. i bought hoover for the quality but its just not in this machine.

[+] 2.0 Deserves 0 stars
I hate this vacuum cleaner. After less than a year and a half, I'm throwing it away. There's a HEPA filter hidden inside the canister that clogs up and reduces the suction. It must be cleaned every couple of uses, which is a dusty, dirty 15-minute job. When you use the tools, the roller doesn't stop and it chews up the carpet it's on. The whole unit is flimsy and feels like it's going to fall apart.

[+] 2.0 DO NOT PURCHASE
I purchased this vacuum because...hello...it is a Hoover and I have had a fantastic Hoover for many years that just cut out on me. The problem is that this vacuum does not work well at all. I purchased it last year and intially it seemed to pick up some of the apparent and apporpriate sized litter on the floor, however, I watched as over time my carpet became more, and more bogged down and soiled looking. Now a year after purchase, it will not pick up anything. It never had enough suction to be very efficient. I am very disappoited and do not reccomend that anyone purchase this product.

[+] 10.0 Good Vacuum!
We really like this vacuum. We moved into our new house and it was amazing how much it sucked up. It is easy to use on stairs and has a nice attachment for that. It is also easy to clean and remove the bagless part of the vacuum. Really happy with this little red Hoover.

[+] 2.0 This vacuum sucks (and not how it should!)
I can't believe there are so many positive reviews on this vacuum. I have had a similar experience to others who disliked it--the vacuum worked fine for about six months, but now (1 1/2 yrs later) I spend more time doing maintenance on it than I do actually vacuuming! It has always been completely useless at picking anything up on wooden floors, it just spits everything back out. The carpets have been hit or miss--sometimes it does actually clean then, but mostly I'm left feeling like I haven't even vacuumed. When I contacted Hoover customer service, they were less than helpful, offering to send me a new belt (which I didn't need and also never arrived). I took it in for maintenance and was told that it was in perfect working order! So why are my floors still not clean? I wish I'd spent more money and bought a vacuum that actually works.

[+] 2.0 Waste of Money
While this vacuum may do the job, it is something I regret purchasing.I bought it as Costco and I did not research the product or any others before purchasing it, I bought it from a friend's recommendation. It is VERY difficult to take apart and put back together. When I clean it I get dirt all over myself (I don't understand this bag less vacuum craze, while it is environmentally friendly, it is in no way convenient or pleasant) To top it off, the burning smell that others have reported is something I have experienced as well. I would not waste the money, it is a very cheap quality vacuum and has a short life.
If I had another suggestion I would gladly give it. I do not have a lot of experience purchasing a vacuum, I can only assume it is worth doing a little research and investing more money.

[+] 8.0 Decent vacuum
We purchased this vacuum in August 2009 when we adopted a dog that sheds A LOT. The vacuum works great as long as we clean the HEPA filter every couple months. Every time I clean the filter there is plenty of very fine dirt, so I'm satisfied it's doing its job. The only complaints I have are 1) the vacuum itself is very heavy and can be hard to push after awhile, but I would assume that's just the trade-off for the amount of power this has, 2) the brush does run when you are using the hose extension so you have to make sure not to leave it on the carpet in one spot for too long to prevent rug burns and 3) the suction indicator on the vacuum doesn't really work - it's almost better to just empty the canister and/or clean the filter when you notice it's not picking up as much as it used to. This has been an excellent vacuum for the price.

This vacuum was good when I first bought it last August. I loved the auto-rewind feature, but the vacuum simply stopped working a few days ago. Now I have to figure out if it's worth fixing.

[+] 4.0 Keep looking
This vacuum really never did what i thought it would do. I liked the price and the wind up cord, but this vacuum didn't pick up any dirt. It sucks, and doesn't pick up any dirt. It really hasn't worked in over a year, it never picks up dirt, and stinks. Its messy, and constantly getting clogged. Keep searching for another vacuume.

[+] 2.0 It is not really that good
I purchased one of these vacuums based on reviews such as those here. However, this Hoover is the worst one I have ever owned, Yes, it is powerful, but it is also very heavy and hard to push around. The canister that replaces a bag often gets plugged at the top and must be cleaned manually. Because of the power, the roller brush is very hard to direct on carpeting and it will not clean against the nap of a rug. The hook that holds the cord off the floor is not strong enough so the cord is constantly falling under the unit, and the accessories regularly fall off the handle during vacuuming. And, when it is time to clean the paper filter inside the canister, the job is very messy. I had an Oreck before purchasing this unit and now miss it very much.

[+] 4.0 Wows you at first... but fizzles later
I bought this vacuum almost a year ago. At first, it amazed me with how powerful it was and how much cat hair it picked up. I thought the on-board attachment that had the motor was the greatest thing with how well it cleaned my couch and stairs. And I love the auto-rewind cord. My only dislikes were 1. the attachment hose is not very long, 2. the power cord was not very long, and 3. the dirt cup is a poor design that traps a majority of the hair around the filter so that you have to reach and pull it all out.

It kept up with my vacuuming needs for several months (with two cats, I vacuum about once a week). I feel like I keep the filter fairly clean - I empty the dirt cup out with each floor I vacuum and take the whole filter out periodically to wash and dry it. But the vacuum has lost so much suction power that the hose is pretty useless now and even the attachment with the motor that I loved hardly picks up anything. So I will likely replace it in a few months. Too bad... Other reviews warned me but I thought maybe it was a few isolated incidents. It seemed like a good vacuum for the price I got from Amazon but I guess you get what you pay for.

[+] 10.0 This vacuum is unbelivable!
After being sick of junky vacuums that would either fall apart, overheat all the time, or just fail mechanically in some way, I did tons of research on vacuums and ended up going with this one. The main factors that make it so awesome are the incredible suction power, the manly workman-esque color scheme which matches my tools, the see-through bagless cyclonic chamber, the hepa filter, and of course the rewind power cord.

Pros: Firing it up for the first time, you will see dirt and dust that are inches away getting pulled into it. Right away, you know this thing has great suction and isn't taking any prisoners. This is a seriously powerful vacuum. I learned the hard way not to get it near any small loose wires like phone chargers or shoelaces; it tried to suck up an entire sneaker and I had to shut it down because it wouldn't let go! Later on, I got the hose wand near a box of tissues and it started sucking them out of the box one by one! This thing will try to pick up anything and everything, even its own cord. It rolls well, has ample cord length, lots of attachments and other goodies which clip on, a very clean and easy dumping of the dirt container, and is easy to take apart in case you need to change a filter or something gets stuck and clogs up somewhere.

Cons: Alot of people complain about the belts, and I have to admit that this was an issue for me when I first got it. Not realizing how powerful this vacuum is, having the brush height set too low will grind the spinning brush into a carpet and it will get stuck, stopping the belt in place while the cylinder that rotates it continues to spin. It wears right into the belt and starts smelling like burnt rubber and will trash the belt very quickly. I burned through a belt doing this not knowing that's what was going on. However, this is a positive thing because it shows the vacuum will work full speed until failure, even if it destroys itself in the process, which is admirable.

Half/Half: The build quality on this is very good and is overall solid, although some might argue the body plastic feels cheap and lightweight; I've slammed it around several times and it's taken a beating with no broken parts so far. The weight of this vacuum is average, although I can see how some people might say that it's too heavy for them; this vacuum is a beast afterall and does take some strength to use. There are no bad features about it, however the only issue I have with its form factor is that the top main handle can't be made longer, and this vacuum might be uncomfortable to use by very tall people after a short time. Some people have said this vacuum is loud, but it is average for a vacuum of this size. I personally like the roar this thing lets out because I know it's doing its job with all that power.

As for those who've said they loved this vacuum when they first got it, but it somehow started failing, I guess they don't realize that this isn't a piece of furniture. It's a machine with tons of moving parts and needs to be maintained and taken care of. All of the negative reviews I've read about this vacuum point to user error or abuse of the vacuum; most of the time unaware they are using it improperly.

Overall, this is a great vacuum at a great price. It has all the features you'd want, can take a beating, and eats dirt for breakfast with brute force.

[+] 8.0 would buy again
For the price it WAS, not what I see now..... this is a good vac. It's not the most expensive so don't expect luxury. As long as you remember to regularly clean your filters, it should work like new again. I do hate, as on any Hoover I've ever owned, that the tools come off their storage area's when in use. A plus is it's a little smaller - which works for me. For under $100, I'd buy again. 2 cats/2 years or so, still using.
Would I buy my previous OTHER expensive beltless Hoover again? NO.

[+] 4.0 great....while it lasted.
It had great suction for the first couple of months but then it started to gradually lose that strength - but we found nothing causing any blockage. The retractable cord is a pretty nifty feature but I sort of loss track of that when wrestling with the top handle that kept coming loose from the base- due to screw coming undone. It's rather bulky. We tried to find a replacement screw but were unsuccessful. Then it just up and stopped working in the middle of cleaning the other day. It wouldn't turn on. We've had it much less than a year. Complete bummer. I don't recommend.

We give two stars for extra long hose, a good effort on suction(the noise makes you "feel" like you're driving a mustang when your suction is a pinto) and retractable cord nifty add-on thingie ---what can I say I like the sparklies ;)

[+] 2.0 Don't buy this!
This is by far the worst vaccuum I've ever owned! It picks up no dirt -- just pushes it around. If you have a dog, don't even consider this vaccuum. It takes me about eight sweeps over the same section just to pick up all of the dirt. Instead of three minutes to clean a small room, it takes nearly 20. Two months after I bought this vacuum, the belt broke. Four months later, the vaccuum completely died. Not worth the money.

[+] 4.0 Not good with long-haired pets
This vacuum has lost of great features, but I was disappointed to discover that it's not good for people with long-haired pets. My dog's hair clogs the hose and the canister and it's a pain to get out. Don't get this vacuum if you have a pet with long hair!

[+] 10.0 Amazing!
I have owned a few vacuums over the years and this one by far takes the cake. It is lightweight and heavy duty. It sucks up everything on the floor! It is amazingly easy to clean out the canister and the filters are just as easy to clean. The cord rewind is amazing, and it is so much better than having to wrap the cord manually. It allows me to pull just as much cord as I need. This vacuum works wonderfully.
The only down fall is the bristles still turn while using the hand attachment, and it would be nice to have an extention to reach the high up places. Other than that I cannot complain about this vacuum!

I purchased this hoover sweeper & I love it. Even my 15yr old daughter doesn't complain carrying up the steps in our split entry. We really love the auto-rewind cord. Dirt cup is easy to empty & see that you've really did a good job on the carpet. Would highly recommend this product.

[+] 2.0 Beaware of the positive reviews
When I got the vacuum I was really pleased with the purchase. It had powerful suction, and very convenient retractable wire. Trouble is it doesn't last. Maybe two months after buying it is stopped sucking in the dirt. Maybe all those positive reviews were left in the first few weeks after purchase. The one year warranty is worthless to me. I'm not going to drag down to some service center, who knows where to have it repaired.

[+] 2.0 Terrible!
I purchased this thing in August, used it ONCE, and the belt broke. No biggie. Ran to the hardware store and bought another. It worked the next 2-3 times I used it, and now it's overheating and otherwise useless. This thing is very, very cheaply made. It feels like a toy. There are better vacuums out there for the price.

[+] 6.0 What's up with the broken belts?!?
Got this vacuum in June 2009. Also ordered a replacement belt package (2 belts) at the same time. The vacuum has worked pretty well for us but we have been having nothing but problems with the belts.
By September the original belt and the 2 replacement belts had broken and I had to order another package of 2 belts at that time. Since then 1 more belt has broken.
Don't know if it is the vacuum design or just cheap belts. Of the 4 belts that have broken (so far!), 1 was the wife's fault. She ran over a scarf which got caught up in the rotating brush until it just stretched the belt out too much that it broke. I have absolutely no idea why the other 3 belts broke.

[+] 10.0 BEST Product for the Money
This is simply the best vacuum cleaner I have ever had. The best quality for money spent all around. The rewind cord feature is amazing as well as how easily you can empty the dirt from the canister. This vacuum also picks up an amazing amount of dirt into its canister. I have started emptying the canister after every room so I can see just how dirty the next room is. I'm always surprised at how much dirt and debris it will pick up on a carpet that looks clean already even. Another feature I love about this vacuum is the LifeTime Hepa Filter....no more buying expensive filters! Just wash and dry and you are set!

[+] 8.0 Good but shop for price
I have had one for about 3 months now. It works fine and I love not having a bag to replace or a cord to wind up (this one retracts into the vacuum). It's a bit hard to push on the carpet, though. So overall, I give it a good rating.

What really surprised me was the $299 price tag. I paid $95 and got free shipping from Amazon in July (09). Who jacked up the price since then and why?

[+] 8.0 Works Well --- Slightly Heavy
Have had this for just a few days. First impressions are that it is built well, has good performance, and has an ergonomic design. Bagless portion of operation is great. Besides getting to have a visual assessment of all the dust and dirt you vacuum up, its extremely simple to empty the dirt cannister. I love a product where I don't need to read the instructions, and this product definitely falls in to that category --- all aspects of the vacuum's operations are intuitive. My only disappointment with this unit is that its a bit heavier than I would have expected and as such can be a bit difficult to maneuver ... especially in dense pile carpets. On the whole, good value for the money.

[+] 8.0 economical and efficient
I thought at first that the vacuum was extremely hard to push until I realized that the lowest setting was for smooth floors rather than carpet. Once I adjusted the dial, the vacuum moved much more easily. It has great suction and picks up so much dirt and dog hair from my carpet that I'm embarrassed about my housekeeping. I really like being able to see in the clear cylinder what it's picking up from the floor, and it is very easy to empty the canister. The cord rewinder is excellent. The vacuum's a bit loud, but no more than most that I've had. It's definitely worth the money.

[+] 4.0 Not worth the box it's shipped in for carpets
This thing is completely useless on carpets. I barely got through half our living room rug before it became completely clogged and won't suck up a thing. Even worse, everything that I thought I had gotten just fell out when I turned it off. I took apart all the filters and cleaned out all the moving parts before realizing that the clog was in the hose. Now, every time I vacuum the carpet the same story! It's useless to me.

[+] 6.0 Mediocre suction, superior price
The price for this vacuum was certainly right, but the suction power left me wanting.
I was rearranging my kids' room and had to vacuum the dust that had accumulated under the beds.
It took 4 (yes 4!) passes for it to suck up most of the dust. There was a thick layer of dust covering the top of the vacuum cleaner. I thought it was supposed to suck dust up, not redistribute it all over itself.
Make sure you empty the vacuum outside, because it can get VERY messy.

[+] 10.0 Works great so far
Easy assembly, and easy use. It works great so far. The wife has accidentally sucked up animal toys and it traps in the top and allows the vacuum to keep working so you don't have to stop and clean it out until you're done. Emptying the container is simple, with a bottom release it really makes it a lot cleaner. Retractable cord works well, but its more of a novelty to me...I actually find it more annoying having to pull out the cord before use, so it's really a wash unless you have lazy family members who never put the cord back on a non-retractable. For the money, this is the best vacuum I could find, so I give it 5 stars based on the value.

Ok, I opened this vacuum up and assembled it with no problem. I started vacuuming and within 5 minutes the plastic main shaft snapped in two, the vacuum broke into two pieces and I couldn't even use the shut off to stop the motor. I had to yank the plug out of the wall socket to avoid sparking. What a POS! Maybe I got a defective unit but I will not reorder, refund please.

[+] 6.0 Hoover Elite Vacuum
Great Price, very powerful vacuum. The biggest fault is the brushes don't stop rotating when cleaner is in upright position to use hand tools. This can lead to carpet "burn" must leave vacuum standing on non carpet or a smell from brushes rotating in one place on your carpet. Why Hoover allowed this flaw is unbelieveable!!!! It is a quick fix to stop brush rotation. I have never seen this happen before on any vacuums, especially cheaper brands. Hoover needs to fix this, it had potential to damage carpet or even cause a fire. Other than this major problem, it would be a great vacuum at a great price. I gave it only 3 stars due to the brush problem.

[+] 10.0 Hoover Elite is a great buy!
I bought this vacuum from Amazon.com at about $40 less then what Walmart was selling it for. It was delivered quickly and without any damage. The vacuum performs VERY WELL, even when compared to the expensive models like Dyson. I'm not saying it's as good but it's pretty darn close. You can actually see all the crap that comes off the carpet with this vacuum and cleaning it is a snap. It's kind of fun to see how much dust/dirt comes off each time I vacuum. I can't speak for it's longevity but it seems like a sturdy/well built vacuum.

If you're on a budget and want a GREAT vacuum for the price look no further.

[+] 10.0 Haven't had any problems with it yet!
I live in a small apartment and although I've heard that this vacuum can't handle a 6 floor house, if you only need it for one floor or occasional cleaning, this is an excellent vacuum. the Auto Rewind feature, although sometimes a little quick and may whip you in the leg, is an amazing feature. Definitely a major plus. Very strong suction and gets the carpet feeling actually clean!
