When I first set it up, the color cartridge that came with it was showing as an error and I could not print anything, even with just black. I had to go to the store to get another color cartridge and then it worked after I installed the new cartridge. Works fine now but that cartridge situation added frustration to the set up process not to mention the cost of the new cartridge and my time to go and buy it.

I swear this shortened my life
The frustrations I've had with HP printer are so great I cannot bear to list them all. And then, when I finally kicked the thing out of my home, it took forever to uninstall all their junk and doing so kept freezing up my computer. It was like getting the most horrible, smelly, loud roommate and then not being able to get him off the sofa long enough to change the locks. If I ever contemplate buying any HP product again, may lightning strike me dead first.
Bought my FIRST hp f4480 6 months ago and it worked fine over that period with the exception of high ink consumption and difficulty scanning (do not recommend use with vista). However upon my last ink cartridge replacement the carriage stuck and I worked with HP chat support to determine I did in fact have a hardware issue. They issued me a gift card two days later worth approximately 100$ to replace it through their website, so I purchased another with overnight shipping and received a defective unit with the same problem. Once again went through chat support and they tell me the replacement (SECOND) printer is not in warranty. Had to wait 4 days for that issue to get fixed before HP contacted me, then two additional days later shipped a replacement and this time I had to return the second unit. Went about two weeks without a functioning printer, all thanks to the piss poor customer support that is HP.

Hp F4480 printer
This printer has it all and is amazing. The price is resonable and is hard to find.

Worse than worthless
Got this thing for $1 with purchase of a new Macbook Pro. You get what you pay for. It jams about every third sheet of paper it attempts to feed. Scanner doesn't wake up by pushing the 'scan' button on the unit. Initiating scanning from software works sometimes, but often fails due to 'scanner errors'.

Shipping this without a cable is like shipping without a power cord.
Printer comes without a way to plut it into the computer. This is no different than shipping it without a power cord. Makes no sense and does not provide a good customer exprience. I am surprised at HP for such a cheap manuver.

Great little printer that scans!
This was the second one of these that I bought. I got the first one at a retail shop, not at Amazon. I liked the compactness and design so well that I decided to replace an old Epson scanner and Lexmark printer at another location with another HP F4480. I now have more room on my desk for external HD's and things. I had another HP deskjet some time ago and hated the software that they shipped with it, so I was hesitant to buy the first F4480. HP makes better hardware than they do software, but this software seems much better. I don't print or make many copies so for me the small ink cartridges are not a big issue. But if you plan on doing a lot of printing, especially photos you'll be replacing cartridges more often than you would like. But this goes for most brands of inexpensive inkjet printers.

So far, works like a charm.
For $60, this all-in-one is a good deal. I just needed a simple printer/copier/scanner, so it's perfect for me. No problems so far. The only thing I wish it had (as it does on the older model) is a size increasing function for the copier. Remember, you have to buy your own USB cable (A-B, male-male) to connect the printer to your computer.

Good All in One on Linux
I have not used it much, but it works very well so far.
I have not used the scanner, although it probably works just as well.
It is quite quiet and it seems to be very efficient at printing. It does not seem to make as many passes and it is much quieter than my previous printer (HP Deskject F380).
It is compact and has all the features I want. Works with Linux with HPLIP (see the site for it). I am using Debian Stable (Lenny, at this time).

Good basic printer
I wanted to let any one looking to buy this printer to be aware of when installing the CD there seems to be a problem with the Adobe Active X, we tried several times to install without success until I clicked on the task master and stopped the Adobe Active X from running. Even the technicians at HP did not suggest this as a solution.
The printer is a nice size as I don't have a lot of space on my desk. The ink cartridge's seem to be a better price then my last printer.

pretty good overall
I got this printer to go with my new Windows 7 PC which I bought the first day it was on the market. (forget exactly when that was, a month or two ago I guess).
For the low price, this seems like a great printer and I love having the scanner which I haven't had before.
I have had one problem which has to do with the ink status indicators. The ink cartridges that came with the printer ran out pretty quickly and I replaced them with high capacity ones I got off the internet, non HP brand. The indicator on the printer for the color cartridge showed no dots, i.e. empty, even though it was printing fine. It is now showing "E" (for error) I guess on the left display window related to the ink status. The printer is still printing fine.
Since this problem isn't affecting my ability to use the printer, I don't consider it much of a liability. Would I have had the problem if I had bought HP replacement cartridges rather than off-brand ones? Maybe not, but there is a big price differential.
I bought this printer because I needed one desperately after my HP Officejet 6100 series printer died. It had been a good printer. I considered having it repaired but thought it might be too expensive, so I gave it away. Now I regret that decision. The deskjet F4480, though relatively low in price, makes up for the low cost by sucking ink like a thirsty elephant sucks up water. With the 6100 I could better adjust the print quality both for normal printing and for copying. However, the F4480 does not have as many options. Futhermore, the printer has no feature to enlarge or reduce copy size. I am disappointed and have been looking for another printer since I set up the F4480. I want my HP Officeject 6100 back! :-(
This happens to be my second HP Printer. The first one lasted almost 5 years! (And, with all of the scanning I do...) So, I thought, "I'll buy HP again".
My old printer was a 3-in-1, and this is one of the many successors to my old HP.
* It installed easily, and it works fast.
* The scanner is faster, and eliminated an unnecessary scanning step from the old HP.
* The printing is faster too (Be certain to have the paper catcher-thingy open, or you'll be chasing the paper as it squirts out from the printer). I'm also surprised as to how good the "Fast Print" looks.
* There's a little pop-up window (only visible while printing) telling you how much ink is in each cartridge.
So, why only 4 stars? HP, as a company, is a little intrusive; throwing up windows wanting all kinds of attention from you. Fortunately, most of those can be disabled (though I had to get Windows involved).
Disclaimer - I did not buy it through Amazon - but who cares? I'm reviewing the product, not Amazon.

Works well enough for me
SHIPMENT: typical for free shipping (few days,,not too bad for free), retail box was the packaging (arrived safely though)
SETUP: no usb cable included but I used my old hp usb (usb head at one end and the other is more square with rounded corners on the top, 1/4" x 1/4" or so, if u need to go get one brfore your printer arrives), follow the quick setup sheet (it's easy/short, I'm not much for instructions but glad ?I read them), I have an older pc but the disk setup took some 20 minutes or so with a restart too.
PRINT QUALITY/SPEED: moderare speed, good quality text printing, will post follow-up when I print pics, also will post when I find out how long the inks last (I am skeptical about them, little and light cartridges)
RECOMMEND: at this point, yes...you won't find it cheaper retail
A nice printer rendered nearly useless by 2 reasons (so far) to hate this thing, had it about 2 weeks. #1: snatches paper like a starving man grabbing bread. Has snarled EVERY sheet of glossy brochure paper I've fed it! #2: Who wrote the software, a pinhead? If you remove a paper jam (see #1), or even do something as simple as replacing a cartridge, it signals "no paper fed" and then you have to print whatever it wanted like it or not, or fight with it by unplugging, turning off & on, turning pc off & back on, etc. etc. and it still doesn't always reset. I am just about to throw it through the wall!

Arrived DOA. MAC users beware of included printer install documentation
I bought this printer with all the good reviews on Amazon in mind. The printer arrived and I followed the setup the printer directions carefully for my quad core MAC desktop running Snow Leopard OS 10.6.1. I got the printer to print the setup alignment page fine but when I tried to print a document after the install nothing happened. I uninstalled and reinstalled the CD printer software three times. No luck. I switched usb cables no luck. After three hours of setup, in desperation, I called HP support and was put on hold for 45 minutes. I finally got a real live person on the line and spent we spent another 2 hours trying to get it up and running. Conclusion DOA. BTW, the instructions are outdated. Although HP set up instructions for MAC called for the installation CD to be used, I was told by customer support it was simply plug and play under MAC OS 10.6! I think I was less angry about it not working at all than time I wasted installing and uninstalling from the CD. BTW, the uninstall function does not completely uninstall all the software. So now I have manually trash the remaining printer software.

Not a Fan of the HP (my second HP)
I ditched my HP printer and bought a Canon instead and I couldn't be happier with my choice.
I'm giving the HP two stars, not one, because it is in many ways a good machine. It is quiet and the copies look good. I was somewhat happy with it. BUT THESE HP PRINTERS USE INK LIKE CRAZY. They are a ripoff.
The Canon system is MUCH better. The cartridges come full and are translucent so you can see the ink in them and watch it run out. They last about 1.5 - 2 months each at my rate of printing (fairly heavy home office usage, as I run a consulting business).
The HP cartridges keep getting weaker and weaker. They hardly put any ink in them, so I have to buy them in bulk at Costco and replace them every 3-4 weeks. And you can't see inside them, so HP seems to reduce the ink that each cartridge holds but won't tell you this. Even more amusing -- every time you change a cartridge, the printer goes through an elaborate routine of printing "test pages," using up YET MORE INK. You cannot stop these test pages or they print again as soon as you turn the machine back on.
What we *do* know is that HP is charging more for their ink per ounce than you would pay for gasoline, Dom Perignon champagne, or virtually any other fluid on earth.
This is their business decision to make. Every company seems to want a subscription model now and I guess HP has decided to sell cheap printers and then make a living off of high-margin ink. But I will pay off the cost of my new Canon in less than a year just by buying less ink. After that it is all profit to me.
And the Canon PIXMA is better for the environment and for my sanity. Plus it works great and the copies and photos look just as good as the HP.

Legit printer. Recommended.
After perusing through bunch of printers on amazon, I found this affordable printer.
Its capabilities are good enough for a college student for sure although it doesn't have fax.
I got it a few days after I ordered it. It's pretty awesome.
Note that it does not come with a cable that you need for the printer.
The cable doesn't cost that much so not much of a problem.
Also, the CD was cracked when I opened it, but I downloaded the driver from HP site so no problem there.
Overall, very good printer!
