twentysomething-grow up
Twentysomething about sums it up Listen to the orginal Jimi Hendrix "Wind cries Mary", a slow, beautiful and painful expression of loneliness. Feel the twinges of emotion that a musical artist can evoke? Now, Listen to a twentysomething bobbing along like a happy idiot as he parrots the words of a great song. With the possible exception of Michel Bolton's tortured version of "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding, it would be hard to find a more immature, clueless interpretation of an artist's work.

Great cd for any mood you might be in
I received this cd as a gift after hearing a few of his songs on other various compilation cd's. I liked his voice from the first time I heard it. I am a big fan of Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Michael Buble, Diana Krall, Ella Fitzgerald, etc., and Jamie Cullum's music fits in perfectly with my taste. I think the biggest surprise on this cd (and my favorite song on it) has to be his cover of "Wind Cries Mary." I didn't know a Jimmi Hendrix song could sound like this, and I love it!
This cd has slower, more relaxing songs, as well as more high-tempo songs that put you in the mood for singing and dancing.

Better than the next ...
This CD is a good, solid jazz vocal album. It seems to lack something, however, and with his follow-up CD ("Catching Tales") it hit me what it is: If Jamie Callum would get his compass on, he could outshine some of the best, including Michael Buble and Harry Connick Jr. He's got the voice, the timing, and the piano chops, but he seems to lack a real sense of what he wants to do. When a singer gets a recording deal and studio time, I suppose the temptation is always there to poke around in various genres, but, personally, I'd like to see him do what he does best: SWING.

What I expected - different; refreshing
Saw a profile of Jamie Cullum on Sunday Morning on CBS a few years ago. Took note and am glad I invested in his work. Probably add another CD in time. If your looking for some good piano playing and a unique voice this would be a sound investment.
i picked this up after hearing his version of "frontin" on bbc sessions. little did i know that i would have this disc on repeat for a looooooooooonnnnnnnnggggggggggg time, even til today. his voice & style i love. the re-arrangements (after all, this is a disc of standards) are brilliant. perfect for chilling, driving, tea time, wine time, working, or whatever. ENJOY!! I sure do.

Jamie Cullum Jazz singer
Jamie has a voice like silk and considering he is at the beginning of his career, well he's definately one to watch.
I've been listening to his album for months and there are a few songs that grow on you and you end up loving even though the initial impact isn't earth-shattering. On the other hand there are a great many songs that just bowl you over the first time you hear them. The covers he does are great and doing covers is always risky since they are rarely better than the original... but not a problem for Mr Cullum. He just breathes new life into them.
Having also seen him live at Kenwood House (and anyone there will tell you)- I haven't walked away from a gig feeling so inspired and with such a huge grin on my face. Now how can that be bad? I challenge anyone to go and see him live and not fall under that spell. He just has so much energy and enthusiasm that you'd have to be a rock not to be touched by it. I mean does that boy ever sit still???
Jamie Cullum's album is a gem (especially when you look at a lot of the other cack that's around). You may not be completely bowled over by it at the first listen... but trust me, it's just a matter of time. There is no escape... soon you'll all be doe-eyed too.

Amazing - get it!
Just a few albums on my whole collection deserve the big five stars so clearly as this one. It's simply amazing.
This is pop, but this is also jazz, and then it's back pop... If you don't like any of them, or if you think that because you like one of them you will not like the mix, then refrain from grabbing this CD.
Otherwise, no more wating - go and get it!!!
Love Jamie Cullum! I usually don't like contemporary jazz b/c i just love the standards so much. He has great songs with intersting lyrics. I truely enjoy Cullum's jazz with an attitude.
My brother turned me on to Jamie Cullum's music and I actually bought this as a gift for a friend. His sound is fantastic!
This is a CD for anyone who enjoys fun lyrics, amazing piano play and arrangements. Jamie Cullen is young, but he's at the top of his game.
Jamie Cullum has an amazing voice and this particular CD has an incredible mix of songs, from Jamie's own writing to classics like "Singing In The Rain". Absolutely my favorite modern jazz artist, ranking among the likes of Jack Johnson and Michael Buble.

This is a great cd. Jamie has a great voice and a very different style. Because I found this one I bought the rest of his collection.

Words cannot describe well enough...
...how wonderful this album is. I love it and have been listening to it often since I received it 2 days ago! Fun, original, get-your-feet-tapping jazzy tunes. Jamie Cullum enjoys doing what he does and it comes through the music. His energy is contagious! Definitely a must-see if he were ever to come to this part of the world.

A male version of Diana Krall
I guess the review's title says everything. Jamie Cullum is a wonderful artist, he combines jazz, rock and pop in a perfect manner. His performance playing the keyboards is excellent and his distinct voice is the last element of his success.
Great CD.

Almost as good as his live show. This guy is a cross between Harry Connick and Elton John in their early years. A must have CD.

ONE OF THE BEST YOUNG ARTISTS
Jamie Cullum, in my opinion, is one of the best young artists around right now. And, Twentysomething is the best of his three CD's that he has released. If you have never experienced his music before, listen to a few tracks. You will think you are listening to a guy who has been around the block a few times and has been playing Vegas piano bars since the Rat Pack days. His songs are of the life experience and show a maturity well beyond his years (he is currently 26 and he was about 24 when he made this album).
All of the songs are very good, an eclectic mix of covers and riveting originals. The covers include a great rendition of Sinatra's "I Get a Kick Out of You," a different take on "Singin' in the rain," and fantastic renditions of Radiohead's "High and Dry" and "Wind Cries Mary." These last two stand on their own as seeming original, not as copies or imitations. Also, he takes Pharell's version of "Frontin'" and turns it into a fantastic song with a much better rhythm and feel, at least for the people of my generation.
His originals are what I really love to listen to. They are funny, sad, toe-tapping, and about modern life with a 1940's jazz-pop feel. The song "Twentysomething" is a fun song about a modern guy who is trying to find himself in a bit of a superficial way, but the music could have been Cole Porter from his hey day. The best song on this CD is "All at Sea." It is a stand out and if you listen to the words a few times you will gain a greater respect for this Jazz-pop-soft rock "star."
All three of his CD's are great and worth having in your collection, I often on Saturday nights just put all three in and let the party go. The music is also fun to drive or work out to. Especially great in the gym on the head phones if you have a bit of a hang over from the previous night.
I saw Jamie Cullum which promted me to buy the CD. The CD was not as electricfing as his concert appearance.
I was very impressed with this album. I love the way he mixes jazz,hip-hop,and adult contemporary. I found his voice easy to listen to and relaxing. The songs were all great. I love the single "ALL AT Sea". That one is my favorite on the cd. I also enjoyed his version of the Neptunes' "Frontin". He put his own jazzy spin on a hip hop tune. I look forward to great things from this artist. I will continue to listen to this cd for years to come. I found it timeless.

A voice and style that seperates him from a world of annoying pop music
This is my first review and I am only taking time to write this because I believe everyone should know and listen to Jamie Cullum. His music is by far my favorite, his emotion is so raw and powerful you don't know whether to laugh, cry, or just start dancing. He writes his own music but what I think is unique about him is reinvention of older classics, like songs by Jimi Hendrix, Radiohead, The Doves and one of my personal faves Frontin' by Pharrel. Get this cd you will not be disappointed and if you ever get the chance to see him live you must his show was the most energetic and stand up performance I have ever seen.

Do Yourself a Favor
Jamie Cullum's "Twentysomething" is the best sweet jazz to come out of the UK since Cleo Laine. His choice of material is masterful and the arrangements and backup are superb. He's playful, sultry, whimsical and passionate. I can't stop playing this guy. Do yourself a favor and buy this CD and also his "Pointless Nostalgic". Okay, he doesn't have Sinatra's voice but you'll play his music just as often. What a treat.

Best twenty-something musician in decades
OK, so I'm not 20-something, but it means I've heard music spanning decades and this is the most exciting stuff I've come across in an awfully long time. To criticize this kid is really silly; just listen to his very personal arrangements of those cover songs he's being trashed for and tell me you've heard anything similar? I mean, c'mon? Singing in the Rain? Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers would be thrilled to hear this kid's rendition. It also serves to bring old school music to new audiences. And how can anyone not take notice of his fusioning beats, rhythms and sounds from around the globe? He modulates from rock, pop to salsa and African percussive beats that can't help but make you feel so good inside. I just saw him at the Paramount Theater in Oakland; watching his fingers fly across the keyboard and his energy bursting from the seat of his pants through his body and out of his mouth was a real treat. So, I say bollocks to any of you pooh-pooing Jamie--he's a gem and I for one am thrilled he has burst on the scene. Welcome to the US, Jamie...I get no thrill from cocaine either but your music gives me a serious kick. Thanks.

Not Jazz. More HYPE than anything.
Oooo...what a disappointment. The first song I heard was "These Are The Days." I hear that tune almost everyday on the Muzak in department stores. It's kind of a catchy tune. I thought there might be more to go with it.
WRONG!
Problem is, that's all he's got. Every song sounds like that tune. He isn't a JAZZ player at all, not at all!!! WHY does the press call him a JAZZ player? There is no "jazz" in anything on that album.
He isn't a jazz singer either. Why did the press stick the label "jazz" on his music? Sounds more like a lounge singer who is really tired.
His vocal range is very, very limited. There is so LITTLE POWER in his voice that, to me, he sounds like he is singing while lying down. If there were an audience, you might think it was recorded in the Holiday Inn lounge one night just before closing time. It almost sounds like he took "Music-Minus-One" soundtracks and added the vocals in his living-room.
No power, no excitement, no dynamics, no soul and certainly no jazz. The songs don't "go anywhere." Dull vocals, dull instrumental backgrounds, no arranging to speak of.
Personally, I think "elevator music" has been given a bad rap. But if there is such a thing as vocal elevator music in the most negative sense, this hyped-up music personifies it. Not worth the time or money. But it's proof what how a recording contract and tons of hype can make people see/hear what isn't there.

not worth your time
a friend of mine recommended jamie cullum, and i loved These are the Days and the cover of Frontin'. Everything else on here was pretty lame. The cover of The Wind Cries Mary bordered on sacreligious.
Another overrated new singer those snub critics love to lavish all the praise they can master. Last time I remembered it's Peter Cincotti, hmmm, wonder where he is now.

This young man is amazing. He's cd, is great no track to skip and he's got such depth on each track.
What A Difference A Day Makes: This song has a really nice, relaxing, jazzy feel to it, great for rainy days.
These Are The Days:This song is relaxing, great background music.
Singin In The Rain: I thought this was a really neat way to change this song without making the song unrecognizable. I hadn't heard another re-make of this song, this is the first, and it is really good.
Twenty Something: The song starts slow, and then this jazzy, catchy tune starts playing, and it makes you want to smile, which is a good thing.
But For Now: Is a nice calm song, his words are soothing and the whole slow jazz feel is nice to listen to when you are trying to fall asleep.
Old Devil Moon: I think this song is fun, you dont think it will be, and then the drums break out, and the instruments truly make this an enjoyable song.
I Could Have Danced All Night: This song has a catchy tune, it really does make you want to dance.
Blame It On My Youth: Here is another song that you could fall asleep to, or even forget your stress of that day. The words are really pretty, its an original love song, one that says alot.
I Get A Kick Out Of You: This is a great song, the piano is fun, and the sound effects he does later on in the song are really great, and I find myself chuckling when I hear him do so.
All At Sea: This is a really pretty song. Makes me want to grow old at sea, where no one can bother me. "I need you more then ever." Its really beautiful.
Wind Cries Mary: Not my favorite song, but it nice when you are in the mood for it, and it does have a nice beat to it.
Lover You Should Have Come Over: This is one of my favorites. Jamie voice is really nice on here, it is filled with so much emotion and longing. I could listen to this song over and over again. The music makes you feel what he means, and his voice is so clear, you can tell he doesnt just memorize the words and sing them.
It's About Time: Good song too, just not my favorite.
Next Year, Baby: I really like this song too. It starts off all calm, and then this fun beat comes on and makes you want to dance. It always puts a smile on my face.
Everlasting Love: Not my favorite song. But it is nice when I am in the mood for it.
Frontin: I really like this song too. Its really jazzy, I have put repeat on this one as well. Its an easygoing song, and you cant help but like it.
Can't We Be Friends: This is a fun song, something that you could find yourself singing.
High And Dry: I really like this song. A great ending to a great album. There is some amazing piano playing here. Jamie is talented, which sums up about everything, its not very often when someone so young has a nice voice and can play some great piano.
I have listened to this C.D often, and I dont find myself bored of it yet.
I am not disapionted with any of his songs, which is pretty good because nowadays you buy C.D's and you find out you only like a couple of the songs. All of the songs on this album are really good, and there is a variaty so you dont feel like you are listening to the same song over and over again.
I really recommend this C.D, its great for late evenings, when you have guests over, or for whenever.
Be ready for a great listen.
To say that Jamie Cullum is an edgy raw nerve is a good definition of this hot talent. He has a smokey raspy voice that comes across as experienced but when you see him you think, damn! how does someone that young sound so old. Jamie defies pigeon holing he swings with the best of the old and the new jazz singers. Listen to the tracks "I Get A Kick" and "Can't we be Friends" you hear a voice of a jazz singer at its best. He puts his mark on the Jimi Hendrix classic "The Wind Crys Mary". I didn't think they made singers of his ilk anymore, I was wrong. He is hot in pop, blues, and to me best at Jazz. Keep up the good work Jamie.

Not bad by any means
He's not the world's greatest singer. His voice gets a bit irritating in the higher register. I like the feeling he conveys, he's having fun, he's young, all that. I didn't think that it was a very consistent album. But when he's on, he's on. "I Get a Kick out of you", "Frontin" and "I could have danced all night have great piano solos, with "Frontin" having my favorite solo. He really knows what he's doing on those ivories. I could do without four or five of the slower songs, again his voice gets to me on those. I hope his next albums feature less singing and more instrumentals. He's not exactly jazz, and he doesn't try to be. The potential for great things is there.

♥*~*~*♥ Jamie Rocks ♥*~*~* ♥
My mother actually owned the CD and she's not known for her good taste but she really surprised me when she put this on at one of her family meals. Many words describe this - dull, boring, rubbish and bad - are all words that don't!
Whoever says Jamie's music is bad clearly doesn't know what they're talking about and more to the point - if they don't like it they don't have to listen to it! Nobody forces them to so why should they complain that they don't like it?
Cullum knows what he wants out of his music and his new CD `catching tales', he sounds more like a young man and I feel that, that's the sound he craves and he succeeded!
Twentysomething is a joy from start to finish and `all at sea' and `these are the days' are absolutely my favourites!
I love this CD. My favorite song is "All at Sea". Jamie Cullum is such a talented person. I highly recommend the dvd showing concert footage as well. Can't go wrong with this guy - he is great!

I don't like it, but you might...
I don't want to judge his talents or style. I think he has his very own style that isn't just a copy of some legendary singers. All the songs in this album are my favorite, but I really dread his version of the remakes. I can't stand the way he sings. I skip his songs everytime it's played on the radio (internet radio, of couse.) I was surprised when I learned how famous he was in UK. I suggest you try some of his tracks before buying it. Don't just buy it because someone told you that he's good.
