I've had this product up and running connecting my DVR to the internet without running wires all over my house. This
product does work as stated but, If I had known then what I know now I would of saved about sixty dollars or so by
ordering the linksys wrt54g router and downloading DD-WRT firmware and wala after about 5 minutes, you'll have a
four port bridge for a fraction of the cost, so simple a cave man can do it! Linksys won't tell you this, Amazon wont tell you this, so I will. You don't need a masters degree in computer science. The firware download is free!
all you need as about 10 minutes of your time, Manually insert the SSID and WPA key and Channel your current router
is using and the router will do the rest, Tested this with my xbox 360 and and it thinks its hard wired to the Internet! Yes you can run up to four different wired devices off your new router converted to a wireless bridge.
you can purchase a wrt54g router off of amazon for about 25-30 dollars, or you could purchase a 5 port linksys bridge for about 160.00 or a single port for about 90.00.

This simple device saved the day
Our iMac 20" internal wireless card failed. After working with Apple to get it corrected, they said "sure we can get it fixed for $$$$". Shipping + repair costs got me thinking about other ways to solve this issue. How can I used my wired interface to connect to the mac to my network?
Fortunately, linksys pulled through with the solution. The WET54G did the trick without software to install and very little fuss. The entire setup process took only a few minutes to setup. Using the web interface, I was able to configure the WET54G to talk to my hidden WPA wireless network. After that, there has not been anything to do. When the MAC boots, it has no idea it is talking through a bridge to the internet. The behavior has been seemless.
I recommend this for anyone that has a lone workstation that needs to talk across a reasonable distance to a wireless hub. It is easy to use and works as advertised.

The Bridge to Nowhere
I spent about 6 hours trying to get this bridge to work and still was not successful.
The installation CD assumes that you have a Linksys default network, which my DSL router is not. So, the setup program cannot "find" the Bridge. I had to reconfigure my home network to access the IP address of the Bridge just to configure it. The online help at the Linksys website gave the typical useless information if the setup program could not find the Bridge; e.g., "disable firewalls".
After gaining access to the configuration page, I programmed in the wireless security configuration. The Bridge was never able to make a wireless connection to my DSL router. (My laptop has no problem.)
I disabled all security and the device locked up my router. All activity lights on the router lit up and connected computers gave warning messages that another device on the network had the same IP address. This lockup was repeatable.
I wanted to use this device to connect my satellite receiver wirelessly to the internet via my DSL router. I'll opt for a HomePlug solution and one NOT from Linksys.

Works as expected
I needed to connect my kid's playstation2 to the internet, and I got tired of running a cat5 cable to my Linksys router every time he wanted to play online. Installation was easy, and I configured it by connecting it to my router via the supplied cable, and running the software it came with. I did have to change the default ip address, as I had a conflict when I used the auto ip configuration. I even hooked up my satellite receiver to test the connection and it worked as I expected it to.

Exactly what I needed
Perfect bridge for hooking my Blue-Ray to my wireless network to access web options on devise.
The unit only works for one computer. I wanted to use to couple to a splitter so I coulld have two computers working and it does not do that and customer service at Linksys was mostly useless and they recommended getting this device without telling me it was so limited in functionality. I returned the product for credit. I do not recommend using linksys products. The 3Wire wirless router works very well. I would use the 3 Wire and Belkin receivers for all your needs.

Linksys Bridge WET54G
I purchased this bridge because I had previously purchased the LG Blu-ray player with Netflix streaming. I didn't realize the Blu-ray had to be physically linked to my router or modem to work.
Long story short, this did the trick, but not without the wonderful support person from Linksys. I'm not the most highly technical person when it comes to networking, even though I spent years in an IT department. I tried to setup the router without help but I made a couple of mistakes and didn't know how to correct them. I tried running the setup again, but it wouldn't let me change some of the crucial settings. I contacted Linksys through their live chat. I got right on with a tech person and we had the settings corrected and the bridge up and running in about 45 minutes. I've always had great support from Linksys in the past and this was exceptional service. And best of all, now my Blu-ray player can work with Netflix streaming and I have a stronger wireless signal when my computer is downstairs near the bridge.
A complete dud. I spent all day trying to set it up, to no avail. Don't waste your time. I normally have had good luck with Linksys products but there's always one execption. On the bright side Amazon made it very easy to return and credit was issued in days.

Using WET54G for "BD Live" Feature with Sony Blu-ray Disc Player
This is definitely the product to have for using the "BD Live" feature of your Sony Blu-ray player, which requires an internet connection to the player. It is likely that you will not be able to get the wireless bridge programmed correctly with the installation disc that comes with the WET54G. No problem. Just call Linksys tech support and they will guide you through the installation with no fee. This may take an hour, but then you're done. Be aware that in order to use "BD Live", the disc you buy or rent must have "BD-Live" bonus material as distinguished from bonus material embedded in the disc. NOT ALL BLU-RAY DISCS HAVE THE "BD LIVE" FEATIRE. Be sure to look on the disc box for "BD Live".

WET54G Wireless-G Ethernet Bridge
TiVo is the real tag/topic here. TiVo HD box and SONY Bravia are upstairs. Linksys WRT54GS wireless router is downstairs. With WET54G the TiVo was on the network / internet in 35 minutes from "configure on PC-to-plug in to power upstairs-get TiVo to recognize the network IP-watch the slides on downstairs PC on the wide-screen HD TV upstairs." That included the time messing around reading the directions, etc.
Im very happy with the wireless g ethernet bridge...it was easy to program through the computer, then attach to my direct tv receiver in my basement. It run effectively and is reasonably fast and doesnt slow down my network at all.
I got my Linksys WET54G Wireless-G Ethernet Bridge v.3 today and it took me 10-15 minutes to set it up. I used "easy setup". I put my network name and security code in, restarted my bridge and router and hooked it up to my dishnetwork receiver. It's working fine.
didn't configure out of the box. Had to call support.
It died in about 6 weeks. Linksys quality has gone straight downhill since they were bought by Cisco. Routers last about 18 months, and cable modems last about 24 months. This lasted 6 weeks.

Works, but not easy to setup
Technically this product works, and once you've setup it will just do its job and you'll forget that you have it.
But to get there is quite the hazzle. The install instructions are incomplete, and whoever designed the product made a lot of assumptions about your environment, which is most annoying.
Unpacked the device - all the usual, device, network cable, power adapter, separate antenna, CD with software. Put everything together and installed the software, ready to configure the device. As part of setup the bridge needs to be connected via wired network to setup the WiFi parameters. But the software can't find the bridge and the error message is useless. Tried all kinds of things, no luck. A few Google searches later found out that the device defaults to a different subnet than my network is operating on. So had to go to my network settings and temporarily change my computer to a different static IP address and netmask to get the setup working. Then once configured, reset everything.
End to end to get it working, 1 hour.
There aren't many reaonably bridge bridges out there which support WAP encryption. But this is not a device for folks which aren't good with advanced network configurations.

Not a bad piece of equipment
I bought this when I moved into my basement apartment to avoid having to run ethernet cable from one side of the 3 bedroom ranch to the other side of the house. So far I am very please with the performance of the bridge. I normally get over a connection rate over 90%, which is normally higher and more stable than the wireless PCI card in my Mac G4 Tower. The setup was a little troublesome as the booklet they include is next to useless, but there are some very simplistic directions to be found online. Currently the device is attached to an Xbox360 for online gaming and I am very happy with the results and performance over-all.
I have a WET11G that works wonderfully, but I needed to upgrade to get support for WPA2 security. Unfortunately the Linksys WET54G could only make momentary connections to my Linksys WAG160N wireless access point, making it completely useless. I returned it. Many people seem to have the same problem.

I purchased this Linksys WET54 Bridge for my boat and it was defective out of the box. Linksys was a pain in the keester. I was on hold or referred to someone else for two hours until they finally determined that it was defective (typical made in China junk). They would not replace the item, and insisted their policy was to require me to pay the shipping for its return. I returned it to Amazon for a refund and Amazon paid for the shipping. This thing is crud
I like linksys products typically. In fact I was really upset when Verizon FIOS switched me to their proprietary router. But this wireless bridge was ALWAYS acting up. I could never get it to stay connected to the network for more than 24 hours. It's like everytime it tried to renew it's IP, it died. And the weird thing was, I couldn't cycle the power on the surge protector; I HAD to pull the pluc out of the WET and then plug it back in. When it DID work, it worked as advertised. But it was always killing the connection.

It does just what it claims and does it well!
I am using this bridge as a wireless bridge from my wired network in one room of the house to connect to my WRT54G wireless router in another room. It works perfectly. I have 1 computer and 2 printers connected to a D-Link DGS-2208 Gigibit Switch which is connected to the WET54G Wireless Bridge which is connected WIRELESSLY to the WRT54G router. That's right, no wired connection between the wired network in one room and the internet which is from the WRT54G router/modem/switch in another part of the house. My wife's laptop connects wirelessly to the home network through the WRT54G and is able to print to either of the two installed printers and we can share files between my computer on the wired network and hers wirelessly through the WET54G and the WRT54G. If you need to connect your wired network to the outside world and don't want to run wires all over the house then this is your answer!

Great product, lousey tech support
The product is great. Enables me to upgrade firmware for my electronic components and allows me to connect Wii to the internet from another room. BUT, about 85% of the time you can't just plug it in and it works so you have to call tech support. They had my network, my computer, my laptop, my router and the bridge so messed up that it took three days to get me back online on just my PC. Everyone I talked to had a different fix and by the time they finally sent me to the "advanced" person, it was such a mess I couldn't connect to the internet at all, from any of my connection points. I still can't connect to my network from my laptop. They've got it so messed up that my ipconfig reports one set of ip numbers and my router reports another so when I enter IPs for my HD player to download firware, it gets confused. Instead of sticking with it, they told me I'd have to call my laptop maker and my HD maker for fixes. Fixes that wouldn't have been needed had Linksys not screwed it up so badly.

Works well after the setup
As many other have said in their reviews the documentation is extremely poor. However after having read many of the reviews and all the tips people left I was able to get the device set up fairly quickly. The performance of the bridge was actually better than I expected. My main use was for an XBox 360 for online gaming. I was surprised to have a solid connection and no noticeable lag during a large multiplayer game on a Friday night. I also have a switch hooked off of the bridge and have no problems running several devices.

Tricky to setup -- but then it works fine
I had to replace my trusty old D-Link DWL-810 bridge with this Linksys WET54G when I upgraded my wireless network from 11b to 11g.
I'm an experienced computer professional and even I had some trouble getting the WET54G configured properly. By all means try running the Setup program that comes on the CDROM, but if it fails to detect the bridge then you are going to have to roll up your sleeves and set it up manually:
1. Make sure the Ethernet light is lit solid and the Wireless light is flashing. If they're not both on, then you need to recheck cable connections. Do not move to step 2 till this is fixed.
2. On the computer the bridge is connected to, open a web browser and try entering the "URL http://192.168.1.226" in the address bar. If prompted for a password enter userid "admin" / password "admin". Then the Linksys administration web page should appear. If so skip to step 6.
3. OK, the magic URL on step 2 didn't work for you, but don't panic. On the same computer open the Network Connections window. Right click on the LAN connection you normally use and click Properties. In the protocol list highlight "Internet Protocol TCP/IP" then click Properties.
4. On the General tab click "Use the following IP address" and then enter the IP address 192.168.1.101. Click OK twice to close the open dialog windows.
5. Return your attention to the Network Connections window. Is the LAN connection enabled now? If not, right click on it and choose Repair. Close the Network Connections window and return to step 2.
6. Once you're in the Linksys browser administration console, select Wireless and click Site Survey. You should recognize the SSID of your home wireless network on the list. Note the signal strength, then select it.
7. If your network has WPA2-PSK security enabled, click Security Settings and enter the shared key passphrase. If not, and your router supports WPA2, then go to the router and turn it on! Older WEP security no longer works against hackers.
8. Open a web browser on the same computer and enter the URL of a web site that you have not visited in the last month. If it comes up then your bridge is working! If you get an error then continue on to step 9.
9. Try right clicking on the LAN connection icon down in your system tray (lower right corner by the clock display) and choose Repair. Then close all browser windows, open a new browser window, and once again try the web site from step 8. If it comes up then your bridge is working! If you get an error then continue on to step 10.
10. Restart the computer. While it's rebooting, press the Reset button down on the WET54G and hold it down for about half a minute. Then try the web site from step 8. If it comes up then your bridge is working! If you still get an error then I'm osrry to say it's time to call Cisco / Linksys tech support. :-(

This was easy to setup.
I really don't get why so many people are complaining about how hard this bridge is to setup, I got it working in a couple of minutes. I am going to guess that the windows software that comes with it is must be really bad.
I have a rule on all networking products : If you can configure it over its web server do so ( telnet or ssh are good also ). I plugged it in hooked up the ethernet cable then used the static ip that was printed on the only printed manual that came with it ( 192.168.1.226 ). At that point I clicked on the site survey and picked the network, if it is a secure network you have to enter a passphrase/key and you are done. Most linksys web interfaces are pretty simple.
There is WPA support but only TKIP encryption ( no AES ). From what I read before I bought this, the only way to access WPA settings is over its web iterface.
I run a mixed network with windows, linux, and game consoles, so this was a great solution. I even plugged my WET54G into the lan port on my WRT54G ( changed its subnet ) and then hooked my machines into it and it all works great.

Setup more difficult than it should be
Setup for the device was more difficult than it should have been. The device comes hard-coded with a 192.168.1.* static IP address, so the install program was repeatedly unable to find it, even when I patched it directly to my PC. I had to manually assign a static IP in that range to my laptop in order for the setup program to detect the bridge. The quickstart guide was rubbish.
Also, mac owners beware: you won't be able to run the setup CD.

Fair, you really need to play with it
Simply put this works but you have to play with it. I found that it was terrible at holding signal when there was anything in between the bridge and the source. Sure it will connect but drop outs were frequent. Now that there is a mostly clear LOS to the source I'm not having nearly the same amount of issues.
For regular browsing this unit is great. You shouldn't have any major issues. For gaming I think there may be better alternatives. This will work but make sure you have clear LOS or you'll be having some serious packet loss issues and disconnects.
I am very disapointed in this companies performance. I am a soldier in Iraq and I spent almost 3 weeks waiting for the bridge to get to me witch is fine I know it takes a while for mail to get here. Once I did receive the item it never worked. Freash out of the package and it would not even turn on. I requested to return the product and was denied because I was not in the U.S.A. This is just not good customer service if you ask me.
This is a great "put it where you need it" wireless access device. Works perfectly with my home network. It lets you extend wireless to devices that aren't wireless access equipped.

(Setup zero stars)
Works great once setup. Setup is a nightmare. Shipped model in April 2008 had 2005 firmware that did NOT support WPA2 (support never figured this out). Setup disk failed instantly on my Vista laptop with an obcure 2 word error message. Tried running setup on my XP Desktop, didn't immediately fail but could not find router even when plugged into the router and firewalls turned off (2wire 2701).
Solution after six hours of work.... Move WET54G to laptop for configuration. Reset WET54G by pushing reset button for 30 seconds. Setup static IP on laptop within default WET54G range of 192.168... so that laptop can find see WET54G. Bring up manual config web page by entering default IP of WET54G. Update firmware. Setup WET54G SSID, WPA2 security manually using web interface. Change my entire home network back to 192.168, since it was easier to do this, then try to get the WET54 to actually run on my 172.16 range I was using. Only after the above, could I move to my Slingbox setup which requires punching a whole in my firewall for port 5001. WOW, can "normal" people really do this stuff????
MAYBE, if you are lucky the setup disk works, but if not, and the above scares you, just return the unit. Support knows just enough to get you into real serious trouble.
But heh, if you can do this, the device works great, streaming all the Slingbox video I want seamlessly.

Negative reviews are outdated - ver 3 is great
I needed to connect two networks located in separate buildings about 60' apart. Each network had two Linksys WRT54Gs, several wired PC's, and a broadband Internet connection. The objective was to eliminate one of the Internet links - accomplished by installing the WET54G on one network and a wireless access point (WAP) on the network in the other building dedicated to the bridge.
I used the web interface for setup. Two areas that initially caused me some problems:
- DHCP didn't come through the WET54G with a weak signal from the WAP; reducing the distance to about 75' improved the signal to 70%, which solved this.
- When configuring the WET54G, it was necessary for me to explicitly set the IP address of my PC to something in the same subnet as the WET54G. After completing setup, I had to change the PC back to DHCP.
The existing wireless routers were on channel 11, so I configured the bridge-WAP to channel 6. As hoped, the bridge was transparent to users of both workgroups.

Works great. Instructions are confusing.
We have purchased two units. Initially we had a problem with a set up, since the instructions are quite confusing, but ones we found out how to connect it, it was a breeze.
You do not have to use the utility CD, just type in the assigned IP. For the same application, you can also use a game bridge. We found the game bridge worked faster and better, but you have to use a provided utility CD, since it actually does not have its own IP. With WET54G you have more flexibility, but you have to have an extra router in order to program the unit.

Excellent product, lousy documentation
I bought this for my desktop. In my home I run WPA2. Documentation is so poor (and wrong), I almost return this bridge. Called Linksys support, the didn't have any clue. Then I found an email from Linksys support and it is now working like a champ. Linksys should add this in the documentation. My WET54G is running ver. 3.2. Here is the documentation. I modified couple of places to make it clear. Good luck.
You are trying to setup your network bridge. Please try the following steps in setting it up.
1. Connect the cable supplied with the bridge from the Network Bridge to a computer.
2. With the device on, hold down the reset button for 30 seconds. Then turn it off for 10 seconds.
3. Assign a static IP on your computer.
a. Click on Start > run > type "ncpa.cpl"
b. Right click on the Local Area Connection and select Properties.
c. Select Internet Protocol TCP/IP and click Properties.
d. Click on Use the following IP Address and assign the following values:
IP Address: 192.168.1.5
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1. 226
DNS: leave these blank
e. Click OK and Close.
4. Open the Internet Explorer and on the address bar, type in 192.168.1.226
5. Leave the username blank and type admin on the password field. You can also try typing admin on both username and password.
6. On the setup screen make sure to have the following settings:
a. Configuration Type: Static IP
b. IP Address: must be on the same range as your router's IP Address.
Example:
(i). If the Router's IP is 192.168.1.1 then, IP Address here would be 192.168.1.226.
(ii). If the Router's IP is 192.168.0.1 then IP Address here would be 192.168.0.226.
As you can see, first three sets of decimals are similar to the router's IP Address.
c. Subnet Mask: the subnet mask that your router uses. For most routers, it is 255.255.255.0 (leave the Gateway to 0.0.0.0)
d. SSID. This the Wireless Network name of your router. It can be checked on your router, or you can also check this on your working wireless computers as it will be displayed under the available wireless networks.
e. Network Type: Infrastructure.
f. Security: this should match to the wireless security or wireless encryption of your router.
7. When the settings are all set, hit apply.
8. Set the computer back to obtain an IP address automatically and the Network Bridge should be working now.
a. Click on Start > run > type "ncpa.cpl"
b. Right click on the Local Area Connection and select Properties.
c. Select Internet Protocol TCP/IP and click Properties.
d. Click on Obtain an IP Address Automatically and Obtain DNS Automatically.
e. Click OK and Close.
Turn the WET54G off and on again. After 10 seconds, the computer hardwired to the WET54G should be online. If you connect this to your Playstation, the Playstation should be online, too.

Pain in the butt lousy documenation
I live in an old house with thick brick walls. My wireless router is downstairs and I have 2 PCs upstairs. Rather than getting a wireless network adaptor (3 years ago, USB network adaptors were a dream and the card type were/are very expensive) What better way to get my wireless upstairs than to use a Bridge! The results over the past 3 years have been frustrating. I know, I know, why put up with something that disconnects all the time while you're using it. The next step up the ladder was too expensive. So... I put up with it. Now, last week as I was going through the throughs of another disconnect, after reconnection (going into the Bridge's admin console and rebooting the unit and waiting 30 seconds for it to come up was my twice or 3 times a day ritual), I decided to see if there was new firmware available at Linksys/Cisco's website. Yes there was. All my problems may vanish, I thought with excitement. So I downloaded the img file for my Bridge. Good enough, before installing I took some screeen shots of my wep key entries and other configuration screens. Then I installed the new firmware. The process of installing the updated firmware was easy. What was not easy was trying to figure out how to reconnect to the thing as the firmware upgrade wipes out all the settings. The hard part was figuring out what the bloody default IP Address was/is, so I could connect to it. I scoured the index, the table of contents of the pdf guide and could find nothing. Finally, somewhere in an area of the manual that had nothing to do with setting the Bridge up, there is a mention of IP 192.168.1.226 being the default address the thing is set with. So I set it up back to back with my laptop and set it up until I could see that there was a good connection to it by going to the "Status" menu in the web interface.
Phew... nothing is easy, however, some vital information up front in the manual would be nice. Likely, I'll forget the address and in 2 years (the dinosaur that I am... if it ain't broke or you can continue to live with it, why change it?), when I decide to upgrade the firmware, I'll have to go through the same drainbamage to find the default IP Address again. More likely, though, I will have lost the will to try to figure this crap out, and just call the Geek Squad and verbally harrass them as to what's taking them so long to get thd new thing to work.
I debated between investing in a used Airport card and the recent version of the Linksys WET54G (version 3.1) in order to have my old G4 iMac connect to a wireless network. After reading the information on this particular website "[...]", I decided to take the plunge and buy the Linksys product. The instructions from the website were great, and my G4 was connected to the network within minutes.
The only modifications that I would make to the instructions on that website is to ensure you enable the encryption if it is present on your network and add the network's password. One issue that I had with the adapter after it was running was that I needed to reset the adapter after I had turned off the computer and my wireless network when it was not in use. Once I upgraded the firmware to the most current version (found on the North American website), this problem went away. If you upgrade the firmware, you have to click on the "help" tab during the installation process, which directs you to a page where you browse for the updated firmware file that you have already downloaded onto your computer or key drive.
I gave this product only four stars because the company should have provided instructions for Macintosh users, and the process of upgrading the firmware was not as straightforward as it could have been.

It worked for me for my home stereo
I have seen the future and the future includes home theater amplifiers with Ethernet ports. Recently, I purchased a home theater receiver, the top of the line Pioneer Elite. One of the features I wanted to have was the ability to stream internet radio stations through the receiver. The one issue I had was how to run Ethernet to the receiver. The Internet in my house comes over the DSL modem in the back bedroom - far from the living room where the receiver lives. Fortunately, we use a Linksys wireless router, although I think that any wireless router will work with this bridge. Why the bridge? It's a lot easier to hook up the wireless bridge than run an Ethernet cable under the house and through the walls to the living room.
I would give this item 5 stars except for the lack of help setting it up in a non-PC world. I have a macintosh and I had to search the internet for instructions on how to set the bridge up.
I found this link and found it worked just fine for me.

There are better options
I pretty much tried this device for a week, before opting for a more reliable option.
This device is another wireless product that only works competently under low strain. What do I mean? Well, if you use this device in an un-encrypted network or a network that uses WEP, you should receive reasonable results. I used this to give a credit card terminal internet access, and due to this I was using WPA to secure the network. This device was extremely unreliable with WPA encryption - to the point of it being broken.
Frequent disconnects, slow transfer rates... etc. Obviously this is not acceptable for a credit card machine, because if I'm charging a card and the WET54G decides not to connect, then I have to run the card again - annoying the customer.
Anyway, as far as setup goes, this device performs like expected. It can be a little confusing to setup for those who are not particularly comfortable with networking technology (you will generally have to have the device connected via ethernet to your network, or a computer during setup, before connecting to the intended device) , but otherwise it works like advertised in that respect.
As far as alternatives...
The number one alternative would be the WRT54GL from Linksys. You might be thinking "well that's a router". And it is. But, with a custom firmware (DD-WRT) the WRT54GL can become one of the most reliable consumer level networking devices. And it has a bridging mode. So it is able to give you the same functionality of the WET54G, but also give you much more functionality if your situation ever changes.
Now a fair amount of reviews recommended a bridge from Buffalo. I'm sure it's good, but the WRT54GL offers much more features and costs about $50. Yeah a device that does a ton more costs less...
The only downside is that it is a little more than twice the size of the WET - but since it works, and works reliably, I don't care.
On a final note, Amazon was great about refunding me on this device. Since this device was broken functionality wise, the refund process was no hassle at all.
-Oh, one final thing. If I remember correctly the device was at revision 3.1, which is apparently the European model of the device. The only reason why this is relevant at all, is that when searching for firmware updates you will need to visit Linksys's European site.

difficult to install
After spending over 4 hours with tech support that does not speak English, it was determined the unit I bought was defective. Received another unit from Amazon. I also bought a Linksys router so that equipment would be the same hoping to simply installation. Still no luck. Followed the instructions manual to the letter and could not get the bridge to work. I refuse to call the tech support again.
I have a PC running linux which I wanted to connect to my wireless home network. I tried using a USB adapter but because there is no available driver for linux I could not get it to work. So I ordered this ethernet bridge hoping that it will work since in the description say "no drivers needed." When I got the unit I followed the instructions on the quick set-up guide ( I used a windows laptop ). Then I connected it to my linux PC. It started working as soon as the PC had boot-up. It was the easiest set up I ever experienced. I hope manufacturers make more stuff that are as easy to set-up as this one. I am not a techie yet I had no problem at all. Another plus is that now I have another PC connected to it using a hub, (maybe this is why the manufactorers do not want you to know about this, so they could sell more of those USB adapters where you could only hook up only one PC or laptop) and I get better speeds than with the other PC's at home connected through a USB adapter! I am planning to buy another one of these great item!
I wanted an Ethernet bridge so my Replay TV can access my wireless network. First bought SMCWEBT-G EZ Connect because it received great reviews. Sadly, that product didn't work for me. I did all I can do to make it work and was about to call their support when I saw the Linksys bridge. Was worried at first because it didn't get good reviews but after checking it out at Linksys' web site, I thought that it will work for me. And it did. The set up was very easy - I just followed the quick install guide. Once the device was configured, I connected it the Replay TV and that was it.

Worked like a charm
Bought it for enabling my slingbox to work wirelessly (which was a major pain and challenge) but muddled through it. The WET54G though worked as advertised and is flawless.

Is it bad hardware, or bad support?
This thing was squirrelly out of the box. The documentation is really, really poor. The set up software didn't find the device, and I changed into my networkman cape. Called support and they had me changing all sorts of network settings before they decided that it was "defective". I suspected that was just an excuse to get me off the phone, so I cycled the hardware a few times and got it working long enough to start the configuration process. After I uncabled it, it disappeared and when I recabled it reappeared, briefly. In the end I couldn't find it at all.
Numerous calls to support, and a missed dinner have me at the question: Is it bad hardware, or really bad support? Thing is, I don't care, it cost me too much time to sort out. And it ain't cheap! I'll have an RMA in the morning and a wireless bridge from someone else in a few days.

Linksys WET54g WiFi ethernet bridge
I've read the bad reviews this product has gotten and can not comment on performance with video streams. I use it with low-bandwith applications and it works reasonably well. So, I will likely buy another. I have tried other vendor's products and keep going back to this model, even though it is expensive relative to the competition because (1) I can administer and monitor it from the Access Point side of the wireless LAN - ie. I don't have to be physically plugged into it (2) it hasn't given me any trouble with alternative external antenna configurations; BUT, all 3 units I've purchased require periodic power cycle - ie. I have to unplug, and replug them in (or use a timer) because performance degrades over time, or just plain stops; when reset daily using a timer, I have no problems.

LAN Printer / Wireless Workstation
Scenario: Had a wireless workstaion running Vista that would not connect to a OKI printer via USB. By acquiring this Linksys device WET54G(hardware version 3.1) I successfully got the job competed for the client. Attached the WET54G to the Linksys WRT150N router. From a wired workstation configured the WET54G to talk with the proper SSID, WPA security and setup the proper gateway. Move the WET54G to the Wireless workstation and connected the LAN port of the printer to the LAN port of the WET54G. Pinged from the Wireless WS the IP of the WET54G and Printer 192.168.1.103 successfully. Installed the printer under Add printer and chose NETWORK printer. Vista found the printer but received a Sub Spooler error message. Time to think out of the box: Deleted printer from Printer section and set it up as a LOCAL printer using a Standard TCP/IP port with proper IP address of .103. All successful. This product saved the client as she wanted the OKI printer to work in her WiFi environment at her desktop. Linksys support was oustanding to say the least using their Tech 2 Tech line (we are a VAR for Linksys). Can't say enough good things about their staff in assisting in getting the job done.
