So far happy with this product. Have some trouble Skyping with my family using webcam - significant delay. Can't figure out if it's my slow internet or the router though.

I know very little
I know very little about routers. Set this up using the instructions and have never had a moments problem. Wi-fi for latop, ps3, 3 itouch, other stuff. Been 9 months and not an issue. If you have little or no idea what you are doing, here is your router.

Great router/switch for the home. Don't listen to the detractors.
I have had my Linksys WRT-54g version 5 for I can't remember how long, probably since the version 5 originally came out and I will say this, if you are having problems with it, you are going to have problems with just about every router/switch/hub you will ever get. I have flashed it to the latest firmware available and have had virtually no problems with it, ever. If anything, I very occassionaly have to unplug it and wait 6 seconds to plug it back in and everything is back up and running within second flawlessly. I have NEVER had any issues that ANY other reviewer has claimed to have. I setup my wireless network and wired network with little to no issue and I am NOT a network/IT person but I am very good with computers.
To all those having problems, I have to disagree whole-heartedly with you on how bad you all are saying version 5 is of this product. I love mine and while I would like to have wireless-n technology, this router gives me utmost confidence in Lynksis equipment. As far as my experience has been, this is a rock solid product and you can't go wrong with it. As long as it works, wireless-g will be fine for me. I have customized my setting and security and just plain had no trouble.
I did see one persons claiming to be an IT person and taking 3 hours to set this router up, I have to laugh at them because if they had that much trouble, they shouldn't be in IT. I set this up in less than a hour on no formal schooling and not working in the computer industry in any capacity. I also saw people talking about how this version is not modder friendly as a reason this version stinks and I say big deal unless you really want to waste your time doing that as the average user does not care about that, plus the fact that is your own fault and not a manufacturers problem or issue and hence is not a valid reason to bash this product. Don't let the bad reviewers who "claim" to know what they are doing fool you, this is a rock solid product that has worked from day one with minimal problems.

Save your money and buy something else.
The main problem with this router is that the connection inexplicably drops. When this happens, you have to go through some ridiculous ritual to try and get your signal back. Sometimes unplugging the router for a few seconds does the trick. Sometimes restarting your computer does it. Sometimes disabling the wireless connection and reenabling it fixes the problem. And other times, you have to waste 1-2 hours talking with technical support. The online setup/admin screen is also difficult to use because the passwords keep resetting. When this router is working without any hassles, it is a decent product. But because of its lack of reliability, I honestly cannot recommend it. The time wasted trying to reestablish a lost connection makes this purchase more trouble than it's worth.

Easy to set up, reliable product
This product was easy to set up with the Installation CD and is easy to use once set up. It occasionally breaks Internet connection, but can be easily re-connected by going to the Wireless Networks window.

make sure you read the compatibility information
It worked great - but when I bought I had an older computer and OS and needed to buy an extra piece to link this to it. I didn't know that in advance so there was a significant delay in being able to put this to use.
Other than that it worked great. I switched to a different provider so I don't need/ use it now.

Hope you never need their Customer Service
I bought this router twice. First time it I started having trouble after 13 months and the store where I bought it wouldn't exchange it. Second time it started disconnecting me periodically from the Internet after 13 months and then I tried contacting Customer Service. Not only they requested money for their assistance but the first representative hang up on me when i requested to talk to a supervisor and when i got to a dead-end with the second one and I was tranferred to a supervisor I was hung up on by the supervisor himself! Cisco- Linksys provide Customer Service from India. Some of the representatives are impossible to understand and obviously the culture allows them to hang up on the customer.
I suggest you buy it only if you are extremely computer savvy and can fix it yourself.

Does What I Bought It For
Although it wouldn't immediately work, a call to Linksys put me through an automated system that timed out as I walked through the steps to set up my router. I was transferred to a representative while waiting for the router to reset; after his instructions were followed, everything worked as expected. I have a typical ethernet jack from my motherboard and my fiancee has a newly-bought wireless card. We were playing WoW together the next day with no problems from the router.

Not reliable, difficult to setup more than one wireless device
First if I had to call there support to get it to work with my mac and my internet service provider. I was on the phone for over 3 hours (lame). I've had this router for a couple of years now and it constantly needs to be turned off and on to get it to work. I've got a low dollar comtrend wireless router at my work and it's ten times better than the linksys . Booo i hate this thing,
This is the exact router we needed. Just going through a divorce and needed to set up wireless internet for my older mac laptop. Works like a charm!

Very disappointed
I purchased the Linksys WRT54G router a couple years ago. There is no way i have found to remove old computers once connected to the router. I wanted to remove a roommate that had moved out and an old work computer - pretty minor, but i dont understand why this isnt a feature. A much more important concern; I use my router for streaming Netflix to my tv (wireless) and for gaming on my computer (ethernet cable). I have run into frequent problems with my router locking up during my gaming. I have also run into streaming issues with wireless connects to my TV. The tv issues have been both quality and losing connection. When i reset my router and computer the problems corrected. Rebooting my computer alone does not fix any of these problems. Time for me to buy a real router. If you dont like to reset your router every week, dont purchase this one!

Good Stable Wireless
I've owned three of these, one was damaged by a power surge during a thunderstorm, one I unplugged and moved to my father's and the one I replaced that with is still going strong. Easy installation, setup and use...the one I moved to my father's required no reconfiguration at all and suffice to say, he is not technologically savvy but still manages to connect with no problems. Reliability is good, does sometimes lock up and require you to cycle power to "reboot" and while it does offer ability to spoof a MAC address and can be made to work in settings where that is required, it isn't very well documented.

Unreliable. Find something better.
From my experience, this router does not work well. When I was the primary user, I had to reboot the router quite often to get it responding again. This was very annoying, but I could deal with it. As soon as my girlfriend and I moved in together, and the router had to deal with the extra connection from my girlfriends Mac, we both started experiencing frequent dropped connections along with the regular reboots.
I have since purchased the Linksys WRT54GL and installed the Tomato firmware. It's been running 4 months without any issues. I haven't touched it since the day I set it up.
I don't know why the WRT54G runs so poorly in comparison to the WRT54GL, but I will never go back to that model again.
This is a belated review. I actually bought this router 4.5 years ago. It was a Version 2.0. It was an awful first experience for a home wireless network. Initial setup wasn't too difficult. But, it would drop its wireless signal every few days and need to be completely reconfigured. I spent numerous hours on the phone with Linksys Tech Support (India) over several weeks to get my network going again. I finally gave up, but the return period had expired.
After on-line research and word-of-mouth recommendations, I bought a Netgear WGR614. It has just failed after 4.5 years and I have purchased the same Netgear model as a replacement. It has never dropped its wireless signal.
It is possible Linksys has improved this router over the years. I know this is probably the most common router out there. But, I would never consider one again.
This router is great for home or small office. Easy configuration through your browser makes it very versatile.

Works...most of the time...
I don't have a lot of experience setting up a wireless computer, so I don't know if what I had to go through is just Linksys or if it is common for other routers also. My problem is that I have only one cable outlet in a very inconvenient location, so I wanted to get the wireless set up so I could use my desktop where I wanted it. So to me...WIRELESS should mean that I do not need to connect my computer with the mondem at all with wires. However, you have to connect them initially (which meant I had to disconnect my computer where I had it set up, bring it downstairs, connect it while sitting on the floor, set it up, then disconnect and take it back upstairs and set everything up again). So I did all that, and it worked great for a few weeks. Then I turned off the computer...and now I'm connecting to the network, but can't get on the internet. The troubleshooting with the Linksys system wants me to connect the ethernet cable with my computer again...this is really not going to work if every few weeks I have to dismantle my computer and take it downstairs and get everything working again. Not really my idea of a WIRELESS system. Maybe I'm doing something wrong because I have talked to others with wireless and they had no problems...or maybe this particular system is just not very great for desktops, I don't know. But I probably would not get this one again.
Very easy to set up and use. I own an older model of this same unit and was pleasantly surprised at the length of time required to set it up (less than 30 minutes).
It's good, they guy who sold it to me worked with me to set it up so he is good to go too.
No problems as usual- A good all around router very flexible- this one is acting as a wireless network expander.
Lost internet within a couple of months, tech support got it back up. Then it lost it again passed warrenty so no help. Also interferes with cordless phone. Weak signal in small house (1600 square feet)with product in the middle.

Good wireles G Router with No Linux support
I purchase this on December 2007 at the time Wireless-G was the fastest in the market. I still use this Router on a daily basis and after a year and a half I can honestly say that it is one of the best Routers I ever own.
Last year I update the firmware as recommended (did not see any improve after that)so anyway. Wireless have a good range and strength. Set it up was pretty easy without the software. Using the software only makes it really complicated since the software itself is quite sluggish and buggy.
The only thing that I regret is not to purchase the Linux compatible version since this is totally useless for the Linux user. I have to use wire networking to connect my Linux home server since the wireless never quite work properly on my Linux box. Windows XP, vista, and Windows 7, work just fine right out of the box.
I pay for this router $45 in Dec 2007 so the $64 they asking now seems expensive more so if you realize that most Wireless-N Routers sell now for $60. Unless you have really old laptop or PC I recommend you get latest Wireless-N technology (chances are that you going to upgrade anyway in the next year or so since Windows 7 is coming out strong).
Some Wireless-N Routers do have legacy support so look into the specs before you make the purchase to find out if that specific model will support your hardware(some models have Wireless-a, b, G, and N)
I don't know if this problem has been fixed in newer versions, but version 3 has a problem with port forwarding where it tracks old connections for 5 days which cause it to quickly stop working when you use any P2P app such as uTorrent or Limewire or anything else that creates a lot of connections. After I had this problem and my wireless internet stopped working, I tried upgrading the firmware to DD-WRT but that made it worse so I tried changing the firmware back to the latest linksys build but it still won't broadcast the internet. (I can see and connect to the network it creates, but the internet doesn't work even when I'm connected.) I'm done trying to troubleshoot this stupid thing and will never buy this model again. But like I said, mine is v3 and newer version may not have this problem.

do not buy version 5+ if u use torrents
Even with DD-WRT firmware, Version 5+ of this model keep crashing when using torrents because the memory has been reduced to half from version 1-4 models.
The only reason people buy this model is to reflash the linksys standard firmware with DD-WRT (google it) one. So, if you're not sure on how to flash the firmware then do not buy this model and instead buy WRT54GL.

No Disk/No Instructions for reinstall for Macs
I bought the highly recommended WRT54G last March. It has been an excellent router, but "stick it to ya" is the quality of customer aftercare! Today I needed to reinstall it on my iBook and called Tech Support as previously instructed. Because my warranty had run out, I was told I had to buy $29.99 Support for the incident or $39.99 for 6 months. NO CD HAD BEEN INCLUDED AND I WAS TOLD THAT I DIDN'T NEED ONE when I called upon delivery from Amazon last March! BOTH Amazon and LinkSys told me that! The first response I was given was that LinkSys could not help that I had not gotten a CD. After many minutes of being put on hold and wrangling over this, I had to raise my BP and my voice to get instructions as to where I could find guidance to reinstall(IF it even addresses iBooks!). It is on their web site; it is a download. Getting that info was like pulling teeth! The Router is the first and last LinkSys product I will buy or even consider! LinkSys is going to go out of business if they keep up the "lies ' n lines!" It is not the employees' faults - it is LinkSys Policy!!!!!!
I've been using it for about a year with my Dell laptop & works great! Just put a wireless PCI card in my OLD school Dell desktop & added a Canon MP620 wireless printer last nite... everything works swell! I'm not a huge tech nerd & don't know if it's the best router out there, but I certainly don't have anything to [...] about. VIVA VIAGRA!!!
This router works great, no complaints. Hassle free setup with my Mac. Small and compact. Good strong signal from anywhere in the house.

worst software ever
I have had this router about two years and have had to re-do it twice. This has got to be the worst software and web support ever. I don't know what has happened - it's never been easy to set up but now it is absolutely impossible to connect using this router, the same computer and wireless adapter...everything is exactly the same. One day last week I just got bumped. Now the website associated with this particular router is no longer in existance. Is this a perfect example of Cisco products...certainly designed for obsolescence. They have never offered a single update and force you to use Internet Explorer for the initial setup. Part of the problem is may be MS and my wireless G constantly fighting for control. I can't believe I've spent four days trying to set this up again. I absolutely will never buy another Linksys product as they don't stand behind what they sell or update. This one is going in the trash. I wouldn't want anyone to waste as much time as I have fiddling with it.

Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router
Product worked great. Set up was easy. Had my WPA secured wireless network setup within 20 minutes.
The product works really nice...For mac users, do not follow the instructions that come with the package since they are for PC. For a mac follow these steps (they worked for me)
Switch OFF your modem, router and mac.
Connect Modem to Router and Router to mac using an ethernet cable.
Switch on the modem and wait for a minute.
Then switch on the Router and wait for a minute.
Then boot your Mac.
Go to http://192.168.1.1 and set up the router....

I installed it in one corner of the house and covers the full 1000 sqft house + backyard with no problem.
Initial installation took a bit, I did not need any help.
The Easy Link Advisor is slow but I never actually needed it.
When connected it is fine. For some reason My connection drops , this happens while my laptop is in sleep mode. I just power down and it reconnects. I called Linksys support, they are not much help, hard to talk to.When I first installed it I could not get it to see my Internet , when I called Lynks they told me there was a glitch in some software versions, not much help, I finally resolved it myself.Otherwise it works ok, I am using for this opinion.

Works with Mac... relatively easy setup if you know what you are doing
I'm a Mac user, and at home I use the Apple Airport and Airport Express wireless routers. However, I needed a 2nd system to set up at work, so I bought a used version of the Version 5 WRT54G router to save some money. The install/setup CD had PC-only software, so I took some initiative to figure out how do set it up on my own. I just looked on Wikipedia to get the IP of the router, pointed my browser there, and set up the router and security in a few minutes. I was also able to download the latest firmware from Cisco and install it in a few minutes without any problems. I wouldn't consider myself too tech-savvy, but I know enough how to get started and find help online. If you're the same you won't have any problems setting this up without the setup software available.
I suppose the Version 5 and later of the WRT54G is inferior if you are interested in uploading 3rd party firmware. However, for my purposes the Cisco firmware is fine and runs a simple network smoothly. For the $30 I paid for a used unit, it is a good deal.
This fine unit is easy to set up (as routers go) and powerful and reliable and can have its firmware replaced. The Linux foundation of this fine router gives the user access to several remarkable products that can be used to replace its already good firmware with outstandingly complex and useful professional grade software developed by the open source community. So, an already excellent product gains from the efforts of gifted folks that toil away to produce excellent additions.
Too bad we do not yet have the same software for the faster replacement unit WRT610N.
If Wireless G is fast enough for you this is the most "bang for the buck available."
i have owned this router for years now (i would say about 5) and it still works like a beauty, always on, always going strong! it is an earlier version of the firmware because i dont care about the updates (if it runs like a champ why change it?) i went through a netgear in about 6 months, i immediately realized how much of a fool i had been for giving money to someone to take their trash (yeah it was slow and constantly dropped signals) im looking to get a new wireless n router but lately linksys has crapped out.... now i dont know what to buy, i may just stick with this wireless g router until it dies (which i doubt will happen in my lifetime, even though im only 19) and linksys is still the best and i would recommend all their products, especially their older one (still better than anything netgear or d-link has put out)

The worst customer service ever
This product does not remember its settings. My home has relatively frequent power failures (about 6X per year) and every time my power goes out, this gadget forgets its settings. Each time I need to re-set the settings, Linksys and I have to work on it for at least 1.5 hours and sometimes up to 3 hours. The first hour I spend with low-level tech support who can only tell me to turn the model and router off and on again or re-set them, which we repeat about 20 times. After an hour of this, they finally turn me over to higher-level support who usually can help me get it going again (but not always - they also like to blame my internet provider but the problem always lies with the router).
It's pretty common for their tech support to disconnect me rather than admit failure. Then I have to start the whole process over again.
Over time, I have gotten very familiar with the Linksys set-up screens, and figured out something myself that I WISH their tech support had told me years ago: In the Administration-Configuration Management tab, you can save your configuration file. SO I tried saving the file once I got it working again. Now I have started re-setting my router by opening this file from the Admin-Config Management tab, and it works like a dream - but nobody at Linksys thought to tell me about this!
Works fine but it took the Geek Squad to install so be careful of the "just press here to install" in the promotion material.

This router is garbage!!!!
This router worked OK when used with a wired network, but beware if you go wireless! First I tried it with a Wii. Worked ok for like 2 days, then the internet connection on the PC the router was connected to kept going up and down and then finally stopped all together. It is a DSL connection. So I reset the whole router, reinstalled all software and it worked ok for another 2 days connected to the Wii and then the same thing happened. So I eventually stopped using the Wii wirelessly. Wwll, 2 months later I bought a new laptop. Connected to the router fine for a while. Now the same thing is happening with that as with the Wii and I know the DSL modem is fine after testing that. DO NOT BUY!

Biggest piece of garbage EVER
I have owned this product for over a year and it is truly, bar none, the biggest piece of garbage ever. Customer service is non-existent. When I was using DSL for my internet connection, I had to reset my connection at least 3 times a day. Now that I changed to cable internet, I still have to reset the connection at least twice a week. I would give this product negative 10 stars if I could. Truly an awful product.
Linksys has done it again! Great documentation - better than the doc for the last router I purchased from them. And this time the setup disk worked and everything got set up the first time, right out of the box. Outstanding product!
