[+] 10.0 tell me who actually likes cleaning a litter box?!
Okay, so I'm not into cleaning the litter box. Why not let electricity do it for you!!! So far this particular product is doing its job. My neighbor purchased 3 different versions of the LitterMaid automatic boxes only to return all of them. She didn't buy the "Mega" version and had so many quality control issues ( with the more expensive LitterMaid Elite, Ultra and Mega Elite?). Like I said, so far so good. I hate cleaning the litter box.

[+] 6.0 LitterMaid Mega 900
I initially purchased one of the new Littermaid Elite LitterBoxes from PetCo and was ready for a wonderful experience (since the previous one I had owned worked so well...and died after 7 years of hard use). It was awful! The metal tines were useless in getting the "poop" into the container.
I returned it to PetCo (they were very gracious and gave me no problems at all). I decided I wanted one just like my old one...with the plastic tines that were much closer together. I found this one on Amazon. It works wonderfully and is very reliable. Sadly...there are still "pick up" issues with small poops, which never seemed to be a problem in the past...but overall...I give this a 3+ stars. I would have rated it higher...but the replacement of the trays is very difficult and the lid is impossible to put in place. I also find there is "still" a great deal of spillage from the litter underneath the litterbox, which baffles me. I'd like to see that area somehow closed off, so my floor doesn't end up with a mound of litter under the device. However...the price is well worth he overall product value and I am happier with a less fancy version than the stealth model I initially purchased.

[+] 8.0 Littermaid Self cleaning cat box
I love the self-cleaning cat box. I have two cats, but unfortunately only one of them will use the box. When he does, its wonderful. However the other cat won't use it !!! Im going to try a new litter that has some herbs in it to attract them, a co-worker had the same problem and this worked for her. But when it's being used, its a great purchase.

[+] 10.0 Great product, big enough for multiple cats to use
this is the second one we bought. Our cats doesnot like to share litter. I bought the other one at Target, but the container was too small, and the cats ended up pooping on the rim and messy all over. But this one is great.

[+] 2.0 POS
This litter box is not worth the money. I have had to have it replaced three times because the motor has stopped. I use the premium clumping litter and follow the directions completely and still it is insufficient. Then my cat urinated on the motor compartment and the motor burned up!! It's a LITTER BOX! It should not break because a cat used it!!!! Now my "warranty" is expired by one month and the company won't do anything for me. DO NOT BUY THIS INFERIOR PRODUCT!

[+] 6.0 There is a cheaper option
I've purchased several different types of automated litter boxes over the years and they usually last between 1 - 2 years. The Littermaid product was the best one. I could usually go about a week between cleanings. You still need to clean off the rake and strain the litter with a scooper.

A better/cheaper option is to just use additional non-automated litter boxes. With one cat I use two litter boxes and clean them once a week with a straining scooper. If you have a really picky cat(s) or several cats and limited space this may not be an option - or you may have to empty them more often than once a week.

Good Luck!

LitterMaid LM900 Mega Self-Cleaning Litter Box

I have nine indoor cats and three boxes for them. If I didn't have the self-cleaning litter boxes, I'd be cleaning them all day. They save me the time and effort of having to do just that.

[+] 8.0 Great Time Saver
Replaced an older model that still worked fine, it was just nasty. This model has an included scooper which fits perfectly between the tynes - nice touch. Make sure you spray the rake and the bottom of the tray with silicone before first use. Leave it in the garage for a few days after to disperse the smell. The poop just slides off once that's done. I use regular grocery bags to line the catchment container - saves a fortune! Nice product. Wouldn't have indoor cats without it!

I am so impressed with this version of the littermaid. I previously had the blue one and it quite working after a few weeks. This one has kept going! I would highly recommend this product! Just be sure to get this particular model.

[+] 10.0 Should've bought it YEARS AGO!!!
I love the Littermaid! It saves me time and I should've bought it years ago! The only thing I strongly recommend is re-using the recepticals. I put a grocery size bag in the bottom of the receptical and tuck the handles of the grocery bag under the outside of the recepticle. When it is near full, all I have to do is pick up the recepticle, pull up the grocery sack, tie a knot and take it out to the garbage. Its wonderful and I dont have to spend $20.00 ever few months on recepticles! I've also figured out a way to use a grocery bag on the top lid of the recepticle! Just play around with it and you'll figure it out too!

[+] 8.0 Excellent product with minor flaw
This is our second LitterMaid. Our first is still fully-functional, but when we got a new cat that did not get along with our other two, we needed a second litter box. This model is certainly more roomy than our older model, and works just as well. I really like the pad on the front of the unit that traps some of the litter that would otherwise be tracked all around my house, however, I wish it were easily detachable as it makes changing/emptying the waste receptacle difficult. All in all, however, I find this to be a very good product, and it certainly makes my life easier (cleaning the litter box once a week instead of daily - how can you beat that?)!

[+] 10.0 Worth it
I knew when I bought this product that it does not completely take away from cleaning the box. What it does it let you not have to do it every day. Our cat is pretty stinky, so this helps keep the box nice and clean. We line the plastic liners with plastic grocery bags, and when it comes time to change the box you just lift that out and toss it. We use Arm and Hammer clumping cat litter and have not has a problem with anything sticking to the side. The entire family is happy we got this because the house doesn't smell like a litter box.

[+] 4.0 New but not improved
I bought my first Littermaid in 2000 when my cat was a kitten. It was a Mega Ultra and lasted 4 years. The motor was always a bit weak but for the most part it worked great. When it finally quit I bought a new Mega Ultra which also lasted 4 years. When it gave out I bought the new and improved Mega. When I unpackaged it I noticed the color had changed but it was essentially the same as the old Mega Ultra. After the first use I could tell the motor had more torque too. I thought great, no more rake getting stuck in the middle of the night. Well, that lasted for about 45 days. One afternoon I noticed the rake stuck at the end of its travel holding the waste receptacle open. I switched it off and back on hoping to reset it, but nothing. I unplugged it and plugged it back in, nothing. I unplugged it and left it for an hour, nothing. So I called up customer service, and they replaced but I had to send the battery box cover, a 3 inch piece of the wiring attached to the rake and a check for $10. So I did. About 2 weeks later the new unit arrived. Same exact unit as before. After 3 days of use the rake became stuck again, but this time when I turned it off and back on the rack returned to the storage position. After 1 month, same thing again. Only this time nothing would fix it. I'm very disappointed in Littermaid. They started out with a wonderful product. But the quality of their "New and Improved" products are sorely lacking. The last two I've owned (in just 3 months) have been junk. I would definitely not recommend it to anyone.

[+] 10.0 Excellent!
Five cats = Littermaid Mega. I actually have two Megas because there is always an after breakfast and after dinner rush to use the Littermaid and the unit does have difficulty scooping two large litter clumps at the same time, it can be too heavy and sometimes will take several attempts to succesfully scoop the two large litter clumps. Also, when you have two cats jockeying to use the Littermaid at the same time, well I just had to get another to keep everyone happy! As other users state, do not overfill the pan. Also, line the plastic litter hoppers with grocery store bags and you can reuse, reuse, reuse, reuse them many, many times. When the plastic litter hoppers crack, I reinforce them with clear packing tape and further extend the use of each one. My cats all love their Littermaid Megas and we couldn't do without them. With five cats, I usually find myself emptying the hoppers every other day and doing periodic maintenance on the litterpan to keep it free of flat clumps that stick to the bottom of the pan. Great invention, wouldn't do without it!!

[+] 2.0 horribly designed, horribly executed.
when i first bought this, i thought it was amazing. scooped the litter, wasn't too loud, and easy to switch my cat over to.

the longer i had it, the worse it became.

the parts become coated in cat waste, down to small gears and parts impossible to clean. the metal rake is just the surface for hard cat urine and feces to stick to (ew. really. ew.)

the receptacles are way overpriced (reusing them is hard to do since the thin plastic breaks and deteriorates in a few weeks,) and the receptacle lids are a joke-- they don't fit correctly enough to stay in place.

the bins get filled up quickly, even though small bits of waste are being constantly left behind.

the thing that killed me was cleaning it-- much harder to do than a normal litter box that can be lined. everything seems to be coated in "cat feces attractor coating."

after sensors starting messing up a little over a year after purchase (rake wouldn't move for hours, then suddenly start moving back and forth constantly until unplugged), i decided enough was enough.

i have since bought a petsafe simply clean automatic litter box. the silence, efficiency, and ease of use (including cleaning) combined with the reusable receptacles make littermaids look like the cheap, ill-designed pieces of sh** i always knew they were.

[+] 4.0 Doesn't Last
I bought this in late June of 2009 and it gave out already. I had a liitermaid previously and had to get a replacement within 1 month. It gave out within a year and a half, so I decided to get the "Mega" box, since we have more than one cat using it.
Customer service is a waste. I called "Littermaid" and their response was, "They should last about a year, some less and some more." Not for that kind of money!
Please think about it before you might want to invest.
I'm not the kind of person who writes many reviews, but this is ridiculous.

[+] 10.0 This Is My 4 LitterMaid - I LOVE THEM
I am a very satisfied, repeat customer of LitterMaid Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes. This is my fourth purchase. I have loved them all except for the Elite model that would lose more litter then it used. I LOVE the older, original models like this. Having a LitterMaid makes owning a cat so easy! Your cat will appreciate always having a clean litter box. I have suggested them to friends and they all love it, too!

[+] 10.0 Great Litter Box!
Litter box is as-advertised, if not better. This is our third litter-maid automatic scooper. That says two things - 1 - they don't last forever. 2 - they last long enough and do a good enough job that we've continued to come back to them. Each litter box has lasted at least 4-6 years, and this one has a deeper & longer pan in it, and the motor is quieter than earlier models. No complaints, and with Amazon Prime, it showed up about 2 days earlier than I expected - on a SATURDAY with free shipping! Can't beat that!

[+] 6.0 Stronger motor than the elite, but still not strong enough for large clumps
I have used this and the Elite, and they worked fine until my 12-year old cat developed renal insufficiency. Now she drinks a lot and pees a LOT. The clumps of pee got so large that the motor wasn't strong enough to move them any more. Conventional cat boxes were difficult to clean, and it HAD to be done daily. So I tried the Omega Paw rolling litter box, and it has done well. Yes, the plastic connectors do break easily, and litter leaked out from the edges until I bought some wing nuts at home depot (2 on the side with the tray did it) and that solved that problem. Now I roll the box and dump the tray every 2 days, although I do have to bang on the bottom with my fist to get some of the larger clumps to detach. Still, it beats the alternatives. The noise of this box was also very annoying, esp. when you have a sleeping baby.

[+] 4.0 Not for skittish kitties
I paid way too much to find out that the motor makes a lot of noise when cleaning the box. My cat was scared of it even though the timing was set to delay the cleaning. The box takes up a lot of room and has to be plugged in so placement is limited. I also did not like that the soiled litter would stick to the bottom, break into small pieces that the comb would not catch, and often missed the receptacle. I ended up having to clean it out manually to fix the mess left behind. I would rather just scoop it the first time myself and save the hassle....and money. I gave mine to a friend and she eventually had the same complaints about the cleanliness. Her cats used it just fine without fear.

[+] 10.0 Make sure to use the right litter!
I had one of these years ago I had given away and then recently bought another one. Initially, it was a big mess as some other reviewers have experienced - the litter would stick to the bottom, get stuck in the rake, just make a gunky mess and nothing would help - I used silicone spray, cooking spray, took the rake off, etc. I knew I didn't have these same problems with the Litter Maid before and *finally* I figured out I was using the wrong litter. I was using Fresh Step clumping, which I used in my other boxes, but after reading other reviewers recommendations I switched. Now I use Tidy Cat Scoopable for multiple cats (Walm@rt) and it works fantastic. With one cat, I dump the waste 2x a week - it's takes less than a minute. A different litter has made a *huge* difference - even the clumps in the receptacle dump out easily, very little left sticking to the inside vs. the other litter. I know Litter Maid also sells their own brand, but I you don't need to spend the extra $. Spray the interior of the box and the rake with cooking spray, then put your Tidy Cat in and do not overfill.
I researched this, the Litter Robot and the other automatic litter boxes before getting this one. For the price, I think this is the best value at 20 percent of what the Litter Robot is selling for. The Litter Robot has a much higher percentage of reviewers giving it 5 stars, but for the difference in price I decided one this model. From everything I've read, this is the best performing of the Litter Maids, as well. I definitely wouldn't recommend anything with a smaller waste receptacle, even with one cat - the point is to clean the litter box as little as possible, right? Also, the price has really come down for some reason - 2 months ago this model was selling at [...] for twice the $77 price tag that Amazon.com is selling it for now.

[+] 2.0 Not worth it.
A few years back we owned a litter maid and it didn't last long, only a couple of months. It wasn't long after it broke our indoor cats left so, we didn't worry too much about it.

Recently though, we aquired two indoor cats again and my wife purchased another litter maid. I'm not certain of the model I think it's the above mentioned one. Our cats went to using it with no problem at all. We have been very careful with this unit keeping the rake clean and being certain not to overload it with litter. Alas, around a month and a half into owning it the rake became stuck in the dump position. We have tried everything that is on the forums. It won't reset. My wife contacted the company and the went through everything with her over the phone. It's dead they said. They had her cut a few parts out of it and are sending us a new one. The customer service agent was very helpful so that is a plus there. I'll try to update this review when we get the new box. For the time being and with the experience we had with the previous litter maid I would say dont' buy it. It likely won't last long.

[+] 2.0 Not as good as older model Litter Maid
I purchased my first Litter Maid 10 years ago and it worked fine for a number of years with our 3 cats. Naturally, when the time came to purchase a new one, I purchased a new LM. I was delighted to see what I thought were improvements to the product - removable comb, with metal teeth. This LM does not seem to have the "horsepower" or strength to push the litter up and over into the receptacle. The litter gets stuck in the main pan and I have to scoop by hand. Somehow, I think the new design comb has something to do with it. While its great to be able to remove the comb to clean, it does not move the litter. For the most part, I end up scooping the litter by hand anyways. It was a waste of money.

[+] 4.0 Not Worth the Hassle
If you want something that works all the time, use your hand. The LitterMaid is nice when it works, but so far it has gotten stuck every other day. I've been using Arm & Hammer cat litter, which is recommended by the manufacturer. The main problem is that it doesn't give the litter enough time to harden up, so when it rakes the box, "stuff" will get stuck and will cause the machine to either run non-stop or will stop running altogether. You will wind up scooping litter from the LitterMaid box about as much as you would a regular one.

[+] 4.0 Littermaid, Not a Long Term Solution
Having had 4 Littermaid units and performed many repairs on them I think I can offer some recomendations about them. (1 first generation, 1 second generation, 2 third and latest generations) I am also an Electronic Engineer with 30 years experience in the field.

First let me give the details, Usage: on average 2 cats with the Littermaid performing approx 5 cycles per day. Litter, Top quality premium clumping litter. Cleaning, 3 times per week including emptying the unit 2 to 3 times per week and completely cleaning (dissembly, wash, reassemble) the unit every 2 months.

Observations, the littermaid is a cheaply made mass produced unit that is not designed for longevity. The unit consists of the following: inexpensive motor, poor quality electronic/micro switches and cheap plastic gearing. Most of the time unit failures are the result of micro switches failing to operate properly and small wiring or ribbon cables failing. To repair the unit would not be a major problem is parts were available, unfortunately Littermaids position is "No Parts are available", just buy a new unit. This can be a bit distressing when you consider you might have paid as much as $180.00 for what is now a worthless excrement recptical.

How about some additional things a Littermaid does not do well or has problems with. Cats that have loose or soft stools will cause problems with the Littermaid. The soft stool simply clog up the rake and are dragged through the litter sticking nicely and requiring manual removal. Cats that like to back the back ends up to the rake and go pee will also cause problems. What happens is that the litter will absorb the liquid and when the rake begins to move it will jam. Basically, one side of the rake will move and the other won't.Overtime this repeatedly jams the assembly, causes a high torque situation and the gears will finally strip. And since no parts are available and the unit will probably be out of warranty it will be time for a new littermaid.

Additional poor design issues, the unit's waste receptical is very small requiring lots of emptying. Littermaid has addressed some of the problems with new generation units but have not done anything with the small receptical. My guess is they did not want to have to offer multiple waste recpticals for different units. I submit this would not be a problem because getting a Littermaid unit to last more than 3 years is just about impossible.

Final Impressions: Will I replace failed unit #4 with another Littermaid the answer is NO!!!! I am currently reviewing the CatGenie 120, the jury is still out on this unit and it will require more research before I make the decision. If you are dead set on a Littermaid I can tell you how to make them last longer and reduce the expense.

1. Use Tidy Cat litter, it is cheap but still a good quality litter that provides good results.
2. Forget paying top dollar for the replacement recepticals, buy 4 gallon small trash bags, place them in the recepticals, lift out when full and replace. Believe me you will save a fortune with this suggestion.
3. Fully dissassemble the unit (based on usage) and clean it carefully. Clean the litter out of the gearing, wash and wax the base. Yep, you read this right, was the base where the kitty litter normally occupies. The wax will make a difference in the reduction of load on the rake assembly needed to move the waste into the receptical. As a result the motor does not work as hard (reducing current flow and extending electronics life) and the gearing will last longer (reduction of torque on the cheap gearing). The micro switches will be less likely to absorb liquids and work longer.

I guess you have to look at it this way. The reduction of scoupage is directly proportional to the amount of money you are willing to spend! IMHO

[+] 6.0 Littermaid LM900
Order the online repair manual if you order the LM900.The older models are far superior to this one. We have 4 cats and our old ones (2) lasted 5 years before repair. We bought 2 of this model and they both broke the first month. They don't clean nearly as well either. The rakes don't push the waste completely into the box, leaving the lid blocked open, consequently odor escapes. We constantly have to step on the lid to close it, and keep a hand rake beside the box to complete the job. What's so automatic about that?

[+] 2.0 Flimsy unit with terrible customer service
Just got two new kittens and this looked like a great item. I wish I'd bought it from Amazon, I paid about $150 at a local pet store.
After less than two weeks it started jamming. Even the smallest "deposit" would cause it to reverse and it would not do its job.
I called the customer "service" number that came with it, and was queued #17 in line! After some time I finally talked to a man who was no help at all.
About then I read the reviews on this piece of junk, both here and online.
I threw it away and bought a "Litter Robot". MUCH more expensive, but you get what you pay for!
Don't buy this unless you enjoy frustration!

[+] 10.0 Great product, a godsend for cat owners.
I have four of these and they are a great help. Some of my cats a are a little finicky about their litterboxes and will stop using them if they're not perfectly clean. Since I work all day and the cats are on their own, I can count on these self-cleaning litter boxes to keep the box up to my cats' high standards.

My only complaint is LitterMaid's quality control can be a little inconsistent. Over the years I've had defective units right out of the box a little more often than I'd like. I don't think it's unique to LitterMaid, I've seen similar QC problems with just about anything made in China. If LitterMaid has a choice, they really should reconsider where they're doing business. It's at the point that if I have a choice between products either made in China or elsewhere, I choose the product NOT made in China just because I've been burned too many times by shoddy workmanship, even from supposedly name brand products.

[+] 6.0 They break often
I have had three of these and they all last about a little over a year. You have to keep them very clean and it is much worse than just cleaning out a cat box now and then. The plastic trays which catch the waste are not too expensive but they add up. Just be aware of that.

[+] 8.0 pretty good, hope it lasts.
we bought our first LitterMaid 4 years ago, a LM700. we didn't take special care of it really. I cleaned it well enough to keep it going and it avoided having any of the issues most people complain about... keep good litter in it, clear any jams, use bags in the trays.

that one broke some time this last summer, it would turn on and the motor would try to run then immediately stop and would just stay in the park position. so we bought a LM500. the LM500 would jam and fail about every 5th time so I took the opportunity to inspect the mechanism (since it was new and clean, working on an old one is no fun) and found that the LM500 was significantly cheaper than the LM700. the old one has dual stop and return sensors and a pretty strong motor. taking what I learned I cleaned out and fixed the front sensors on the old one and it started working again and I returned the horrible LM500.

well, the LM700 finally broke for good, sensor or motor, dunno, it won't return or go in reverse. so we "upgraded" to the LM900 which only seems to differ in that it has higher sides making it a little quieter. on inspection also noticed that the new one also only has sensors on one side. other than that "downgrade" the motor seems stronger and doesn't jam at the same full levels that either of the other two boxes did.

we're pleased so far, since it works better than the trusty LM700 did. we just hope it lasts as long.

[+] 4.0 If your cat is neurotic......
I was absolutely IN LOVE with the automatic litter box idea. Having 5 cats, I was looking for some help with cleaning. Unfortunately, due to the fact that I DO have 5 cats, there is no "good" interval for cleaning. The revolving door to the litter box room meant someone is always actively USING the litter box or WAITING for their turn. I joke, but inevitably one of my cats would enter the room just as the box would start cleaning. One day this happened to be my black cat, who is stereotypically a little skittish. The preposterously loud BUZZSAW volume of the cat box freaked him out to the point where he would not even enter the room NEXT TO the room where the litter box was.

Naturally, he still needed to use the restroom, so he made a point of telling me so, at 7am on my leg as I slept.....twice.

We got rid of the box but the damage was done and to this day, two months later, he still doesn't want to go into that room. We had to get another litter box and put it into the complete opposite end of the house.

The product seemed to be alright, except for two things: 1) the rake got filthy even though I only used the box a few days, 2) the volume and grating noise of the motor as it drags the rake across the litter.

If you have a cat that is a little skittish, this is not the product for you. If your cat is laid back, you'll probably get great success out of it.

[+] 10.0 1/2 the scooping
I have owned a LitterMaid Litter Box for several years, until it finally broke down about a year ago. Well, the number of cats in my house doubled (from 2 to 4, with the addition of 2 kittens) ... I decided it was time for it again. The kittens took to it without a problem, and the other two were used to the old one, so they have no issues either. I keep it, and the other litter box in my spare bathroom, in the tub; so that scattered litter is easy to clean and sanitize. I am very tempted to get a second one, so that maybe I can get away without having to scoop for 3-4 days, instead of every other day as I do now. the cats use both boxes so I scoop the non-mechanical one, which gets old quick. My only issue with litter boxes now, is how do I keep them out of them while I'm trying to clean them?

[+] 8.0 LitterMaid LM900 Self Cleaning Catbox
We had to get it because we got the second cat--we really should have had it for just one, since it's so much cleaner. So far, it's been great with only a couple of drawbacks. That litter fill business can be tricky. If you overfill it, it will keep running back and forth, back and forth--perhaps all night long if you don't hear it. True. So you have to keep an eye for awhile after you put litter in to make sure you didn't put too much litter in. After a couple of months, I have to say I'm finally getting the hang of it. And the other unforseen drawback is that the waste container pretty much has to be emptied every single day or it starts to overflow. I might say that I wish it was at least twice as big, since this unit is supposed to be for multiple cats. Hard to go away for the weekend and ask a neighbor to deal with that. Overall, I think it's a great product, and it's definitely much better than having the stagnant litter box in here. I would definitely recommend this product.

[+] 10.0 GREAT
I HAD THE SMALLER VERSION WHICH WAS GOOD BUT MY CAT GOT BIGGER AND WOULD NOT FIT ANYMORE. SO I HAD TO GET A BIGGER ONE. THIS IS GREAT NO MORE SCRAPING THE TINES OR SIDES. VERY QUIET. THE RAMP DOES MAKE IT HARD TO EMPTY THE WASTE CONTAINER. I USE THE CONTAINER OVER AND OVER UNTIL IT GETS SOILED.

[+] 2.0 failed on so many levels
This is FAR from a glowing recommendation. After having TWO, yes TWO littermaid boxes fail in the exact same manner and having to spend money to not only pay for postage on my equipment's parts to the company but also for their postage back I am told (after I call them) that it will take up to two weeks to get my replacement. This does not include the two weeks for them to even process the replacement.

I owned a littermaid product nearly 10 years ago that was exceptional. This company has failed in its product quality, its customer service (an altogether different fiasco of not only a flat out lie but also erroneous information that would have placed my return in limbo had I not confirmed with another rep) but also complete and total customer dissatisfaction. Not worth the time, effort, or money.

[+] 8.0 Own two LM900s for over 2 yrs: I'm happy so far.
There are definitely tricks and techniques listed in other reviews that will maximize the effectiveness of the litter maid, such as:
- keep the litter level within the correct range.
- use a marker & draw the fill level guides around the entire tray: makes filling to the correct level easier.
- use only fine ground premium clumping litter for best results.
- mixing with 1/3 of flushable litter will make the substrate lighter and easier for the machine to handle.
- deal with any clogs or blockages that build up on the rake right away.
- every couple of months, scrape the rake tines clean with an old butter knife to keep from building up residue.
- a bit of baking soda or cat box deodorizer in the catching tray will further reduce odor.
- ideally, you should have 1 box for every cat in the house. (We have 6 cats so; 4 regular and 2 LM900s)
- don't toss the catch boxes, just dump them out in the trash and you can reuse them multiple times. (saves money)

The littermaid boxes won't solve all your cat box issues but it will scoop more frequently, minimize smell, save time, extend the life of the litter and keep things a lot cleaner and easier in general.

The unit is a bit noisy, takes up a bit more space than a regular box and requires a power outlet to be close by.

[+] 2.0 HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This machine never worked the way it was advertised to. It cannot handle urine, the urine clumps and scooper gets caught on it. This stresses the motor out to were it resets itself, thus not scooping anything. Or if it does break through it, the clump crumbles to small enough pieces where it slips through the scooper and quickly starts to stink. I tried five different types of litter, nothing improved the machines performance. I ended up keeping a hand scooper and plastic bags available as I had to scoop and clean it myself. The plastic mounts on the scooper ended up snapping of after two months of use. The box is just messy and useless and hard to wash as you have to disassemble it. You might as well buy litter tray for $5, it will function 100 times better. I use a plastic concrete mixing tray you can get at home depot for $6. It looks just like a litter tray except it is about 2' x 3'. If you got the room this is the way to go.

If you decide to buy this auto-box save the receipt. You will need it

If you want a good auto-box, get the one that uses the disposable trays with the blue crystals. That is a good auto-box.

[+] 10.0 Worth every penny
I was given an older model LitterMaid litter box and I was hooked. It finally died after about 6 months of use. I decided to order the larger one and I am so happy with this model. It makes it so much easier to manage a cat's pan and it uses less litter compared to convential pans. I check it once in the morning and once in the evening and have to change the waste container about once a week. It is so much more convenient to deal with compared to convential pans. I will never use a convential pan again and if this lasts at least 2 years, I will gladly purchase another one when this one finally wears out. I would definitely recommend this pan to any cat owner.

[+] 2.0 Save your money and this piece of junk!!!!
After having this piece of junk for 2 months it broke. I contacted littermade and there is no option for a refund or a return. Even when this worked, it was a hassle and did not clean the box, and the unit smelled! Stick with a regular box, I had to clean this box more then the regular box!

[+] 10.0 Purrrrfect for Multiple Cats
This LM900 is replacing a 6 year old 500 series LitterMaid that finely started to die. It was suggested in other reviews that a larger LitterMaid would work better for multiple cats and I have to say they were right. Since installing the LM900 three weeks ago there have been no jams or clogging which occured on a regular basis with the LM500 and three cats.

The larger litter area (tray) allows more room for clumping since the three cats all have to "go" right after each other. The LM900 motor is powerfull enough to move three to four clumps at a time without having to reverse and try again. I have also noticed that with the large tray the cats are not breaking each others clumps whiched caused jams and soiled litter. The litter is staying much cleaner longer.

The only thing you need to keep in mind when choosing / upgrading to the LM900 is it's larger size. It is wider and longer than "non-mega" versions so if space/size is a concern double check your measurements.

[+] 10.0 Making the littermaid the perfect litterbox
I've got 3 cats and have been using littermaids at least 10 years. It's true that they don't last forever. I think I'm on my 3rd or 4th, but it's definitely well worth the cost. I've tried all kinds of adaptations to the receptable:

1. Cheapest and easiest is lining them with those plastic grocery store bags, but to be honest, we only get around to dealing with the litter box 1x/wk and with 3 cats, the receptable would overflow (gross!). If you change more frequently or only have 1 cat, the bags are a good, free solution to buying receptables.
2. To create a larger receptacle, you can raise the littermaid on top of 3 plastic empty litter buckets. Place one of the buckets underneath to collect litter (obviously, you need to take off the disposable plastic receptacle or cut a hole in the bottom of it, so you have a chute). My cats didn't like this, though. Didn't seem sturdy enough for them.
3. You can also keep it on the floor with one of those shallow rubbermaid plastic bins or a lined carboard box instead of the disposable plastic receptacle. Again, creates a larger receptacle.
3. I think the best solution is the litterworks system. I realize they are costly, but it will never need to be replaced. If you are handy, you can build one yourself. I think they sell just the chute, if you DIY, but you could also just cut a hole in the bottom of a disposable receptable. We have it set up so that the litter goes into a regular 13 gallon kitchen garbage bag (you do not need to buy those expensive continuous bags from litterworks). At the end of the week, all we have to do is change the bag, make sure there's no litter stuck to the rake or the bottom (Pam is helpful at preventing this), and pour in more clean litter. Some baking soda in the garbage bag helps with odor. Takes no more than 3 minutes and is great for people who travel or just don't clean out the box that often.

In summary, with some simple modifications, I think the littermaid is the best option there is. It's not going to last forever, but amazon sells this model (which I've found pretty reliable) for a reasonable price and I think it's worth the expense to not have to get up close and personal with the kitty litter.

[+] 2.0 Terrible - died after ONE MONTH
I don't have very much to say, but wanted to offer another negative review of this product to hopefully steer someone away. We bought this just before a week long vacation hoping to both ease our weekly chores and to help our cats' caretakers while we were gone. It worked great . . . for a short time, and then before we knew it, it just stopped. And I mean stopped cold. I came home one night to find the rake poised above the little plastic bin, just stopped, doing nothing. I flipped the on and off switch and the rake jutted forward and back a quarter of and inch, and then no more. I got down and pushed it - very hard - with my hands and finally got it to move while flipping the switch, but again a bit later I found it stuck over the plastic bin. And this time it was clearly DONE. No amount of coaxing would get it to move. Luckily we still have a week left on our 30 day return with Amazon so it's going back. I'm upset because it seems like a great idea, but the product itself is far too touchy - we are certainly not alone in having a problem with it. We'll go back to the old school, manual method, I suppose. This, clearly, is not the answer.

[+] 8.0 LitterMaid LM900 Mega Self-Cleaning Litter Box
Works great, but the litter cleaning ramp for the kitties to step on after doing their business is useless. I'm sure it works beautifully for cats who'll actually walk down the ramp, but mine go to extra lengths to avoid stepping anywhere near it. Good thing it's detachable because I took it off. Also, this model doesn't seem to accept my permanent litter receptacle as well as my previous one did, but it still fits with a little jiggling. Other than that, it's great.
