Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 WebCam

I bought the camera less than 2 years ago and could not get it to work when I switched to Win7, even though there was a driver upgrade. Contacted Logitech and they gave me the run around of try this and this and this for almost a month. They finally came back and said my particular model would not work under Win7 and they would not support it. Since the warranty is 2 years they said they would give me another camera if I could provide the original sales receipt which I did not have. The same thing had happened on a logitec keyboard and mouse a few months before. I wound up getting a new keyboard and mouse but it was about half the price of my original. I had registered the camera on their site but that didn't seem to matter, I had to have the original receipt. Since I could not find they offered a 50% coupon for another camera from their overpriced site which they would provide when my camera arrived at their returns office. That made me mad so I bought a microsoft Lifecam HD for a lot less than I could buy a lesser camera even with their coupon. All I can say is thanks Logitech because the new camera is great, installed in less than 15 minutes and produces great quality. Their poor support staff which I suspect is overseas has cost them a customer. No more Logitec in my future, ever!!! Thanks for teaching me a valuable lesson.

I have an older PC running XP, the processor will not keep up with the demands this camera has, when its working its great, I just need an upgraded PC, this one is nearly 10yrs old.

The USB powered web camera works extremely well on video chat programs or other IM programs that offer video. This camera can also be used for taking snapshots of yourself to save on your computer as well as recording a video for e-mailing as an attachment. This camera works relatively well under relatively dim light condition because it has Logitech's Rightlight 2 Technology. It also utilize Intelligent Face Tracking which has to be enable each time by going into the user interface, otherwise it defaults to a fixed position. The Intelligent Face Tracking also controls auto zoom. Since this is not a motorized webcam the face tracking ability is limited to the field of view. It does this by adjusting the zoom and then pan to capture a face in front of the camera. Also if you have an another microphone plugged in to the computer, it is best to go to the user interface to check to make sure that the built-in microphone on the camera is selected. This is especially true if you just ran a speech to text word processor program using a headset. Speaking of the microphone, this system utilized its own electronics in other words a built-in sound card powered by the USB bus which utilize Right Sound Technology. This system is totally independent from the computer's microphone sound system. It does an extremely good job of providing excellent sound quality as well as reducing echoing and sound feedback between the speakers and the microphone. The sound level is also adjustable in the user interface.

It is probably best not to utilize the provided CD but to go to [...] to download the latest driver software that they offer to make sure that all the bugs has been mostly ironed out. Worthy of note: there are explicit instructions to install the software before plugging in the camera, or else the camera won't be recognized by your computer and you'll likely be in for some headaches. You would then have to uninstall the program and reinstall it over again the proper way before plugging in the camera. The software pack includes some fun stuff for the camera such as avatars, face accessories and disguises. After you install the camera and programs, you can also look for new disguises and face accessories that you can download from Logitech from the user interface. This camera utilizes a CCD sensor with a true 640 x 480 pixels and for still images it is capable of up to 1.3 megapixels utilizing software enhancement. Although on the box, it is listed as fixed focus this camera's focus remains crystal clear from about 1 foot to infinity. Typical of practically all web cams, the lens system is very small from the appearance in front of it on the outside. This camera is really nothing more than a pinhole camera utilizing high amplification in order to provide high-performance under low light condition. The Logitech LightLight Technology works relatively well but there are still some short-comes under medium dim light condition. Under that condition the color density and brightness appears to be fluctuating causing the face to appear more red one moment and then less the next. The flexible camera base mount on LCD monitor extremely well less so on CRT monitors.

I have been using this web cam on a constant basis for several years and I find it to be easy to use, easy to set up and of good value. Other reviews delve into the technical aspects of the product. I can only say that this web cam delivers what it promises. It "works".

After doing some research, I purchased several Pro 5000's for family and professional colleagues. As long as the systems was Windows XP or Vista, no one had any problems. One person was using Windows 2000 Professional nad had driver problems. The Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 WebCam works very well in variable lighting conditions and the built-in micke provides good audio.
Some of the "bling" software special effects provide excellent engagement for younger children, encouraging them to use and to communicate with others. No problems getting it to work with Skype.

I actually bought this cam for a friend whose husband is currently deployed, so my main concern was to purchase an efficient plus useful device. So far she has been completely satisfied. The picture and audio reception has been perfect for her needs. No software problems at all; the updated drivers I dled work fine. I would recommend this product wholeheartedly.

We purchased the Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 WebCam specifically to chat with friends in China over the holidays. Previous reviews of this product were helpful in choosing. Now I can confirm them. The Pro 5000 generated a clear image and worked well with Skype, with minimal lag. We downloaded the latest software from the Logitech website instead of using the one that came with the product. No problem, very handy, very affordable.

I purchased the Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 WebCam on December 3, 2008. The shipping was extremely fast and I couldn't be happier with the product. We use it on the yahoo instant messenger to talk with family in the Philippines. The broadcasting is clear and the mic receiver is excellent.

Ordered as a gift for a friend who wasn't even too excited about having a webcam until she received this one and used it. She instantly loved it! You can use it as plug and play (without loading the software) or take a few minutes to load the software to have the extra features. I was able to talk her through it over the phone and using Skype (free download), we were video chatting in a matter of minutes. She then emailed all her friends with her Skype name and told them to get a web cam too! I had previously purchased a Logitech webcam for my elderly mom so we could video chat and was impressed with how well it worked and how easy it was for her to use. This one is has great picture quality and again is simple to use. Great purchase for yourself or to give as a gift, even for someone who isn't very computer literate. My family lives all over the US and it's great to be able to stay in touch by video chatting, especially on holidays. I even use my webcam and Skype to stay in touch with friends in Brazil and clients in New Zealand and Australia. (using with Windows XP without any problems at all)

Originally I bought this to use it with Skype in linux (gentoo 2007.0). It is supported to a minimal extent (by a 3rd party driver, not logitech), and wouldn't work with Skype. The various hoops that had to be jumped though to get the small amount of functionality out of it that I did were certainly not worth it.

I ended up trading it with someone who had a QC Pro 4000. That camera uses the pwc driver, and works just fine (skype, mplayer, whatever). If you are using linux, I would suggest going for a 3000, 4000, or a 9000.

On the upside, this worked fine in windows (XP), so my trading it was no big deal. He didn't even have to change the driver/software from Logitech to make it work. We have used it in skype from windows many times with no problem.

Purchased this for my girlfriend so that we could skype while I was away at school. The camera was great an fit well on top of her 19" flat panel monitor. However with all the technological advances in web cams (eg. the web cam in my mac book) I do find this camera to be a little unnecessarily large... Good product for the price.

Our son lives and works in Costa Rica, so we needed a webcam to help us communicate with him. This device was very easy to install and works flawlessly.

I consider it a very good value for the price. Highly recommended!

This is the first webcam I have ever purchased. I bought it solely to communicate with someone that is long distance. I have a relatively new iMac G5 with Mac OS X 10.4.11 software running on it. After downloading skype, it was plug and go. Easy to use and sufficient for communicating with friends, especially for the reasonable price. Because it is on a mac, any of the additional features the camera may come with do not work, no zoom or anything, so if you are looking for something with a lot of features this is not for you. I am happy with the purchase as it does what I need it to do but it would be nice if it did more. It sits fine on my flat panel monitor but sufficient lighting is important as it otherwise tends to be a little dark. There is a slight delay when I move around... as I said good for communication with friends and family but that's about it. Also, sound is fine with the built in speakers but if you desire to speak privately - you may wish to look into headphones so everyone else isn't in on your conversation. I have not tried any out to know which are compatible...

I agree with an earlier review about "good hardware, bad software." Never got this to work reliably on my XP system and ended up returning it. It would forget it had a camera installed after reboots or come up in applications as "In Use" when nothing else was using it. Never got it to work successfully with Skype.

After researching the Logitech support forums it appears there are some serious problems with a fair number of customers. It either installs and works fine or it doesn't. And if it doesn't, the forum basically states "unresolvable" for most of the problems raised (like the 'in use' and 'loses device between system restart.' It also appears there is only one solitary engineer supporting the software.

In summary, it may be worth a try *if* you can return it. If it works for you it seems to be a nice camera, if it doesn't, don't waste 3 days like I did reinstalling, switching usb ports and boards, trying different versions of the drivers, etc. Just send it back.

this is a awesome product for the low price good image quality,I used it in my video editing program to cature a video at 720X480 and the quality was awesome

Purchased this web cam as an update. Have had and used many web cams. It works well on the Mac but on the PC I can not get the INF file to initialize. Worst part is the very cryptic support web site (after spending 30 minutes carefully providing the problem along with screen shots, the Web site invalidates due to a faulty Phone number format (3 times until I simply gave up).

Lastly, the drive CD was so warped it would not read (or spin)requiring me to download the drivers.

I have used many web cams and have had no problems - now this one is in the rubbish bin as I now purchase a different make. Fool me once, shame on you.

Smooth operation with some of the best video i have ever seen from webcams. None of my higher priced recent webcams match this quality. I have to use this version on military supported computers and I have gotten only great comments back from those webcamming with on my quality of video. You wont regret this purchase.

I use the QuickCam Pro 5000 on my Ubuntu Linux desktop and use Skype to communicate with friends and family in far off places.

The camera works very well for what I use it for. If it wasn't for the fact that I recently had the opportunity to use a QuickCam Pro 9000, I would probably be more enthusiastic about it.

The 9000 was running on a Mac (running version 10.5.1) and offered considerably better video quality. I was instantly jealous that I had given this away as a gift.

Note that in both cases I was running the camera without any of the Logitech software installed, they worked "out of the box" on both machines.

If you are looking to just get your feet wet with a web cam, I would whole-heartedly recommend the 5000 but personally would not hesitate to spend the extra dollars on the better quality 9000 if I was making a new purchase today.

The camera quickly installs to your machine and is up and running in no time. With great features such as face tracking, bright light technology and intuitive features this camera is sure to make you proud.

Excelent image quality, great microfon but it worked for only 2 weeks. After that the system and the program don't see a pluged camera anymore.

I think this webcam is very nice. I have had nothing but good luck with it.

i was looking around for a decent webcam for videochat with people overseas and i saw a great deal on this camera during the black friday sale i was able to get it for $[...] with a mail in rebate for $[...] . I ve only had it for a few days; here s what i found so far:
- the crispness of the picture was acceptable, with no blurring occuring even when i would move my hand or my head fast
- sometimes colors seem to wash out, which happened to me when i was using it in a blue room with lots of natural light coming from the window. other users say that you can fix the hue and saturation of the computer but i yet to find those controls.
- the built in mic is a great plus if your computer doesnt t have a built in microphone like my laptop. it only picks up minimal background noise
- the stability is not that big of an issue if your computer is flat on a desk or any flat surface. it can be problematic especially if you re like me and you use your laptop on the couch or in bed, since it is just perched on your monitor very much like a bird on a wire
- installing the cd took around 15 minutes, then i ran into some problems because initally i couldnt get the microphone and the speakers to work. my brother had to fiddle around with my computer settings. At least it didnt crash my computer 1.73 pentium, 1 gig, vista basic like it did with some other users
- it worked well with skype audio and yahoo video , however the image was kind of laggy, with the picture freezing every 5 mins or so the person i was chatting with was in asia and on DSL . it might just be because of my computer though, so i m going to try it on my sister s computer and on our desktop. i have also yet to try it on videochat here in the US.
- the extra features like the avatar and the on hold pictures are kinda fun, but can slow down your computer
- the camera also comes with a plastic privacy blind thats looks like sunglasses for the camera lens which you can attach and swivel up and down. it was kind of flimsy and was easily removed.

overall, its an ok camera, and one that i would probably keep, however i wouldn t have bought it if it weren t on sale.

It's a really good product. Very crisp image, good for low light.
After a several automatic updates of the software, it started to restart my PC. It works a few minutes and then restart.
I reinstaled the software, but the problem remains.
After pre-installation of my OS->XP - there was still the same problem.
I don't know what the reason is, but it is nasty.
Otherwise, it's a Great WebCam.

This webcam is a fun piece of equipment to have. I use it to "visit" with my daughters. I bought one for each of us. The picture is still a little jerky at times, but the technology has certainly improved for 4 or 5 years ago, when we got our first webcams.

My wife likes it cause it is easy to use and the video looks fantastic.

It was easy to set up and I'm really impressed with its audio quality. I use it for video phone calls to Korea and the sound quality is much better than the real phone. Video quality is acceptable. I'm sure it's not the camera but the Internet connection that makes the video not so smooth. It's still great to see each other and chat! Highly recommended.

Finding information on what web cams will work on a Mac is not simple. Apparently Macs with OSX 10.4.4 and are compatible with any web cam that is UVC configured. Finding out what is UVC configured is not easy either, but this Pro 5000 is. Apparently not all Logitech cams have this configuration. I have a Mac Mini with 10.4.10, and the cam worked right out of the box with no software installation necessary. As indicated in other places, the mic on it does not work on the Mac, but I have a mic anyway for use with Skype. I suspect that this cam would work better on a PC with the software that comes with the cam. On the Mac, there is no capability that I can see for adjusting white balance, light sensitivity, etc. I have no way of comparing this cam with others, but it does what I want it to with Skype, giving an adequate picture in a room with average lighting. Daylight gives a better picture.

With a newborn baby on a different coast from its grandparents, I knew I'd have to upgrade my webcam for the best video quality. We communicate over Skype so my wife's parents can see their first grandchild "live" more often. The quality of both video and sound are impeccable. Highly recommended.
Also takes very good videos you can save on your computer to send or upload. I am very surprised at all the great features for the price...

I love the built in color correction technology and the bult-in mic. Setup took less than 5 minutes.

I bought this camcorder because I knew that it was supported by Mac. I use it with Yahoo Instant Messenger on my Mac, and everything works fine. I liked so much that I bought one for my mom, too. Since the Mac version of Yahoo IM doesn't support audio yet, I haven't had a chance to test the microphone.

Well, I don't have experience with other cameras... so I just browsed amazon's reviews and bestsellers... And came to this one.

However, I am very happy with my Logitech 5000. The quality is perfect, except for fast motions, where it gets too blurry, but I think this is the problem with any web camera.

The white balance and color correction are pretty well designed too. I made pretty watchable movies in almost dark room.

I also liked the placement thing (although it looks strange) - it is very flexible and you can put your camera either on top of your laptop, or anywhere else you like, very convenient...

I bought this Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 for my Mac Pro. It gave me an excellent image but I couldn't use the microphone. After checking with LogiTech, they confirm that this model is not supported on certain Macs, and the Mac Pro (Intel processor) is one of them.

It's great. I like the tracking system. It's good for the value (especially when I get $20 back.

After reading numerous other reviews highlighting habitual problems with Logitech software, crashes, bugs and related issues were my main concern of owning this webcam. However, I did not have any issues nor did my girlfriend, who also got one. We both downloaded the latest software from Logitech, which I would recommend.
As for the product itself, the stand that comes with it seems to work well and it very adaptable. The picture quality is ok, but it is hard for me to rate since I have only owned 1 webcam. I would like for it to be better, but perhaps current technology and the limits of internet connections limit it. Perhaps a webcam without fixed focus (i.e. one with auto-focus) would work better. Auto white balance can be patchy. In terms of lighting, unless you have a decent light setup, the best thing to do is just work off monitor light. The camera picks this up well (better than other webcams I have read) and monitor light produces about the best quality of light you could want- soft, directional, front light.

Terrific product has a great image we use it to visit with our daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter that live in Alaska. We occasionally use it to visit with our son-in-law in Iraq. I would recommend this product to anybody.

This webcam is a huge improvement over my 3 year old basic webcam. I installed this webcam on my Windows XP system using just the basic application I downloaded from Logitech and it was able to install without a hitch. I have a TV Tuner installed which has screwed up previous webcam installs including the basic Logitech webcam , but this model worked ok. The monitor stand seems robust, but I think I might have to tape the bracket to the back of my PC to prevent it from falling off. The image quality is great compared to many basic webcams, although I still see a little bit of flicker and exagerated blue tones from the reflection on my monitor. Although my previous webcam showed mostly black outlines in the same level of light. Sound quality is as good as a telephone. This webcam uses software face recognition instead of motorized pan and tilt. This is fine for me, but some extra $ will get you the real deal in face tracking. Software is easy to use for basic features and integrates with Skype well.

This product was easy to install and setup. The camera works great! The overall picture of the camera is nice and full of color. I'm glad I got this camera.

We bought this several months ago and we love it! The picture and video quality is excellent and using the avatars and fun filters makes it VERY fun to use. We just can't stop laughing when we use them and it makes for some great pictures for myspace, christmas cards, whatever you can think of! With the USB plug in, anyone can use it (even non-techies!) because it's so easy to set up. You can download a ton of new avatars, filters and stuff on the logitech website for this cam. Get it to keep in touch with friends and family while having a hilarious time. :D

I had an older Logitech camera, this one blows it out of the water! Sharp clear pictures.... The way you are able to zoom is just great! Well worth the money I paid!

This was plug & play on my Mac. I'm running OS X 10.4.10 & iChat AV 3.1.8... Required no software or drivers! Excellent image & sound quality. I'm super happy with this Logitech quickCam Pro 5000 after a disappointing experience with a Macally IceCam that had low picture quality and no mic. Albeit the IceCam was very lightweight & portable which would be convenient for notebook travelers.

I purchased this webcam so I could see my family while I am away at school. I have a sony notebook and needed something that would stay on the screen. Webcams are pretty much the same when you look at frames/second so that was not a determining factor. However, I was drawn to the echo-free audio, the face tracking, the rightlight, and the picture capture that is right on the camera.

This camera is great! It is easy to setup and use. I would recommend this camera to anyone.

Picture is clear. Have a little bit problem with auto backgroud lighting(may be my computer is a bit old for it. I am still using PIII with less than 500MB of RAM). I first installed the webcam driver only because I did not like all the junk in the logitech CD. However, discovered that the driver alone did not work well(color looks aweful) with MSN Messanger. Reinstalled the logitech software and had a much better picture. The mic works well. A very decent product for the price.

comes with a built in microphone which captures sound in 5 feet radius and nullifies voices farther than that. Image quality is far much better and you can see crystal clear pictures and somewhat clear when its dark. Overall a good product.

This is the worst camera that I have ever purchased. I had a Logitech before and so went with the brand name. From the getgo I had problems. First the software wouldn't load properly. After that, the camera continuously malfunctioned causing loads of computer problems. After five days, I realized that I had to return the product to Amazon. I have since bought another webcam and it works beautifully proving that it wasn't my computer or incompatibility issues, but a defective product.

It works well, but opened Pandora's Box for spams and junk mail Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 WebCam via IE, which I detest and do not use.

The picture is pretty good, it adjusts to light very well. The follow-me feature (it zooms in on your face and follows you to an extent) isn't great and neither is the avatar feature. But, for making video and pictures and video calls, it's pretty good.

The camera performed as specified and was a real treat to use. All of the adjustments are available to be used as required.
