Master Lock 5400D Select Access Key Storage Box with Set-Your-Own Combination Lock

A lock really only needs to do 2 things, lock, and unlock, mine would unlock ok but would not lock until i hit it against something, which is not easy to do hanging off a door. And yes, I used the switch thats supposed to cause it to lock. I'm sure I just got a defective one, but amazon doesnt allow you to request a replacement only return it, so I think ill try another one this time.

I entered what I was looking for and it immediately came up.
Checked Master Lock and found what I wanted and bought it.

The product is easy to use and works great! Why find a hiding spot when you can get one of these?

I use this when I go surfing to put hide my keys.

My "smartkey" from a 2008 prius isn't waterproof like my old Ford keys and the key fits into this storage box perfectly.

Then I attach it to a hook under the rear fender of the car (this exists on many cars) and lock it up while I catch some waves.

Much better alternative than other people who try and hide their keys in various places in or around their vehicle.

Can set your own combination.

Has a removable latch and can also fit on door pulls.

Seems water resistant but I've never used it in the rain.

Would strongly recommend.

I like this style best. Plenty of room inside for more than one key. It's easy to change the combination number even if you loose the directions. The only thing I don't like is the plastic packaging. Too hard to open.

Product works good I have hanging on a fenced in property that has gates and I keep a key in box hanging so I have easy access. Only one problem with box, some small amount of water will get into it after heavy rain.

I strongly suggest you choose a different product.

Generally, this thing failed with very little use.

From day one, I had it attached to my back deck. I opened it once when I first got it. I had a contractor open it once. And I opened it again a few days ago. Since then, it doesn't work anymore. Now my key is stuck in it and it's attached to my BBQ(I moved it from the deck just before it broke).

I went out to test it the other day to see if I could remember the combination and got it on the first try. I removed it from the deck because of concerns that it was a bit cheap and it might break and figured the BBQ isn't a permanent fixture. After attaching it to the BBQ and locking the key inside again, I immediately tried to re-open it and it wouldn't work.

When I did have it opened, the key (which was new when I put it in because I just had all my locks changed) was all weathered from the moisture that had gotten into the chamber of the box. I kinda half expected that to happen though.

I was mostly shocked how few times I actually opened it before it broke. I assume it is mostly due to being out in the elements all year around. I ordered it Sepetmeber 11, 2009. And today is July of 2010. It didn't even last a year before it failed.

We live somewhere where we don't really know our neighbors that well, we don't have any local friends or family to leave an extra key with, and our landlords live 30 minutes away...so we needed an option for "hiding" a backup key.

We wanted something easily accessible but a bit more secure than the fake stone type of thing. Then it hit me--a lock box! I'd worked in a real estate office for four years and I couldn't believe it took me so long to think of the solution! A quick search on Amazon and I found this combination lock--perfect for us because we didn't want anything permanent (since we live in a rental). We have it attached in the back yard on the main electric line going into the house (see user photos).

It was VERY easy to set up with your own combination (the instructions are very clear, and after doing it once, I don't imagine needing the directions again). Basically, there's a metal switch on the inside that you flip (see user photos), set your 4-digit combination, then flip the switch back. This also means you can change the combination any time you want. To attach it to something, there is a second metal switch on the inside that opens the lock (see user photos).

The internal box is large enough for probably at least 10 single keys (although the description says five) or a few keys with tiny key chains...so there is definitely room for a larger car key or key fob. It is NOT big enough for a credit card (see user photos).

We have only had it a few weeks, so I can't yet comment on the longevity of the unit, but I will come back in a few months and update my review.

I was a bit concerned about buying something that would hold the key to my home while I was away, since that is a potential risk to security. However, when I realized that the Masterlock Access Key Storage box is securely made and secure, my concerns faded away. I am very pleased with the design and security of this lockbox. I would recommend it to anyone!!

This lock works well as a lockbox for a house. Its easy to setup and use. There is not a lot of room for a keychain or multiple keys.

This item worked perfectly and was about half the cost of buying it at Home Depot. There is plenty of room for multiple keys on the inside.

I was very happy with how quickly this arrived. I have others like it that I've purchased in the store. This one requires you to hold the open button down in order to close it, where the others will just close and you spin the dials to secure it shut.

I am in Real Estate and these lock boxes work great. Very easy to manage. Holds several keys and has a padded backing so the lock box won't scratch my sellers door. Best price I have seen so far.

I had owned the lockbox for 2 months, used it 15 - 20 times, and then the black piece that you slide down to open it jammed up. The numbers could still turn but the black piece wouldn't move. Called Master Lock and they said to call a locksmith.

When I bought this it worked great. I used it for bed and breakfast guests and the cleaning staff for two months. A couple of days ago I had to remove it from the gate temporarily. When I tried to set it up again, the key door wouldn't close. I think the spring inside the key area that allows the handle closure to lock got stuck when I removed it and began blocking the key door. Considering it was the very first time I had tried to take the thing off the gate and put it back, that's not very reliable. I'll be trying something else.

We bought this to use outside our house. It's held up wonderfully in cold air/rain storms. Would definitely recommend.

We have been using these for real estate purposes, and they work great. They the perfect size to put a few keys and possibly a small garage remote. Amazon shipped these very quickly; I was pleasantly surprised at how fast I received them.

Great product. Very sturdy. Lock was bigger than what I thought I was ordering but am very pleased with it.

This lockbox works fine except the combination needs to be set in order to close. I go to work while a cleaning crew cleans our house and I need them to lock the front door when they leave. The idea is to have them then put the key in the lockbox and close it. Unfortunately, I have to rely on them to scramble the combo as well and reset the combo every time they come. Oh well.

The lock box works great. It appears to be well built and the mechanisms seem to work well and appear durable. My only issue is that the box is not large enough to hold a standard sized key card (credit card sized) as I had hoped for.

This was easy to set up. I set my combo, tried it a few times - no problems. Seemed like a good idea (i'm afraid of locking myself out.)

One day later, and the dials will barely turn. When I finally forced it into its combination, it won't open. What gives? I can hear something rattling around inside. And try as I might, I can't turn the dials any further. I expect much better from a "master" brand lock. Maybe they don't make 'em like they used too.

I would return it, but I already used nail polish to mark it to distinguish the lock. (I live in an apartment complex - was planning on putting this in our package room in case of emergencies, but a few other people have had the same idea. A spot of polish would have set it apart.)

I'm just glad I hadn't attached it to anything yet. You can only get the "arm" (the loop thingy) open and shut if you have the lock open ... so if you can't get at your keys, you also can't take the lock off of whatever you've affixed it to.

A few other commenters have noted that they can't get theirs open, either. I would recommend trying another option - there must be some other brand out there to try.


(PS - Just in case you were wondering, no, didn't forget my combo. It's the same as my voicemail code. The thing is really broken after one day.)

Bought two of these to use outside with house keys so no one would ever be locked out again. Much more secure that hiding the key under a rock. Not just for realtors!

Whether you're looking for a place to store a spare or trying to sell a house, this lock box fits the bill. True to their reputation, Master Lock has made an incredibly tough device. As one would hope for in a product such as this, no would-be thief is going to have the time or tools to get at the contents in this case. The whole gadget is very heavy for its size, obviously a plus in a security product, and feels utterly solid. As for the compartment size, you could easily fit several normal house keys or even one of today's over-sized car keys/key fobs.

Using the device is easy as well, with simple instructions for setting your own unique 4-digit code. The code dials have a sliding plastic cover to keep out the elements, although I doubt it's entirely necessary given the quality of construction for this tool.

Even the price is right, currently about $17 from Amazon. (Local hardware stores might try to charge you twice as much!) You might find a cheaper option out there, but it probably won't be nearly as sturdy.

Overall this product does its job perfectly with no complaints, major or minor, and is a great value!

I knew I was going to lock myself out sooner or later, so I bought this gadget. And a week or so later, I was glad I did. I've resorted to it several times over the course of the year and it's worked in all weathers. Good for your peace of mind.

Although this Master Lock appears to be well made, after about two weeks of daily use the first digit in the combo became stripped and the lockbox would not open. Had to take the door knob off, denting it in the process. I've decided to purchase the GE/ Supra KeySafe this time. Hope others have better luck with it.

Being a realtor, I have used many different types of lock boxes. I like this one, it is easy to operate. Unlike the push button boxes, you don't have to reenter the code to close it up. The little door on the front keeps the rollers clean and the boxes look nicer on the houses. Check the prices at several different retailers on Amazon. They vary greatly. I think I paid about $18 per box. Well worth the price!

I have used this to let friends and relatives into my home as opposed to leaving a key under the mat or hidden outside. It seems to work great, holds multiple keys and seems very sturdy.

This is the best key storage lock on the market. Why buy ugly real estate locks? Works great, looks great and you can change the combination. Recommend.

We invest in real estate and use lock boxes all of the time. This looked like a good buy. It even worked real well for a while.

Then one day it just would not open for my property manager (PM). She tried like crazy to get it open, then it finally popped open. After that it would open for ANY combination. One down...

Now I'm trying to sell my house so I put another one of these on my own house. I used this box every day to gain access to my house as it was MY key in the box. Well this one died too. I had a termite inspector coming to the house that day and he was not able to get in either. I had to climb through a window to gain entry to my house. I then removed the door knob so I could take this thing to my work bench where I was able to break into it.

That is another bad point about this lock. I hit it no more than 20 times hard with a normal hammer on the hinge at the bottom and it just opened right up.

So all around this thing is just a hunk of junk. I would avoid it.

This Master Lock 5400D Select Access Key Storage Box is the best lock box on the market that is a combination type lock box. It has a drop down hinge and is impervious to water and the elements.

This product does what it supposed to do. I put spare keys in it and if I lock myself out of the house, TA-DA! I have keys to get back in. Isn't that great!

I bought this for my oceanside vacation rental last October. I placed it on a protected patio area and placed the key in it. It worked fine until last week when a guest absolutely could not get the key out. I sent my handyman over, who knew the combination. He tried it. Didn't work. Tried it again. Didn't work. Sprayed WD-40 on it. Didn't work. He never got the key out of there. Fortunately, I had a back up lock box that did work. My back up lockbox was a cheapo that had been sitting out in the tropical rain for 18 months. That had to be sprayed with WD-40, too, but it opened. I have no idea what went wrong but my guess based on previous reviews is the following: 1) it rusted, or 2) it was inadvertently reset.

This is a great realtor lockbox especially if you have larger high security keys. It is fairly hard to jam by clumsy brokers.

Its glaring fault is it is totaly NOT water resistant. In the winter expect it to be frozen solid, even if the sliding cover is up. Even in a protected area the cold can kill it. I keep deicer in the car.

It needs a detachable rubber cover for the whole lock for winter use.

As a property manager for over 120 homes, I have used many different types of lockboxes on my vacant properties. This is by far the easiest to use. We change our combination code often and with these lockboxes it is so simple.

It's definitely nice to have when it works. I won't repeat the advantages of this lockbox in my review since they are listed elsewhere. When one got used relying on it and it doesn't work all of a sudden, then the consequences can be really bad. This is what happened to me. I came home the other day and tried to get to my key. Well, the lockbox wouldn't open. I know my combination is correct, no doubt. It's easy to remember and I'm good with numbers. But the lockbox refused to open. Just picture yourself by your frontdoor trying to open your own door. Unfortunately there is no after-sale service in this case for this item. I could return it but why would I? My key is still inside and the thing costs $20. Just not worth it. Thanks a lot to the manufacturer for all the trouble they caused me.

It worked great for my purposes. My daughter kept locking herself out of her condo. This brings peace of mind knowing she can access the extra key without having to call anyone to let her in. It sits on the back porch away from prying eyes and very convenient.

"Master Lock 5400D Select Access Key Storage Box with Set-Your-Own Combination Lock" is something that you really cant find in most stores just laying around next to other locks. This is actually a nice semi-rare buy on the internet that really can be applied to anything your imagination can put its use for. Keys, useful trinkets and pretty much anything that can fit in there (see product description). The dual "U" lock and combination dials make it really easy to use. Nice product. Sturdy and strong.

Works as well as any realtor lockbox, solid construction and reasonable price. Only downside might be that you can't use a realtor key to open it. But I did my own MLS listing and didn't have any problems, just gave the code to realtors when they called asking to show the place. On the plus side, it can also be used for workers doing renovations that a realtor key lockbox can't be used for.

This safe works perfectly for what I bought it for - namely as a safe place to leave my motorcycle keys while I swim in the ocean. The hasp fits nicely around the motorcycle's handlebars and the keys are secure inside. One thing I particularly like is the fairly large numbers on the wheels, which I can easily read without my glasses.
