Product Specifications

Ever since the November 2007 digital release of the hilarious, zeitgeist-capturing single "Ur So Gay," Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Katy Perry has been wowing critics and fans alike (including the Queen of Pop herself, Madonna) with her big voice, sassy attitude, and feisty, confessional songs. Katy's debut album, One of the Boys, is a sharp, witty pop-rock gem filled with candid tales of neurotic ex-boyfriends ("Hot N Cold," "Ur So Gay"), crazy road trips with friends ("Waking Up in Vegas"), and figuring out who you are along the way (first single "I Kissed A Girl," "Fingerprints"). While the album displays Katy's feisty, girl-power swagger, it also reveals her more vulnerable side on such regretful ballads as "Lost," "I'm Still Breathing," and "Thinking of You." Although just 23, the Santa Barbara, CA-born native has been writing songs and playing guitar for several years, and possesses the flair and confidence of a veteran storyteller. Catch her in all her glory this summer when she joins the Vans Warped Tour for its entire coast-to-coast run.

[+] 6.0 Mixed Bag
There's a few killer, bouncy dance tracks here including the first two singles, but the remainder is a mixed bag, not quite as catchy, but worth a listen.

[+] 8.0 Catchy tunes
This cd is pretty great for a debut album. Katy Perry knows her direction and she has her own style, and thats WAY BETTER than the other generic teenage pop stars who just pops pops pops.

Highlights of this album are (in order): Hot & Cold, Lost, I Kissed A Girl, One of The Boys, Ur So Gay, Waking Up in Vegas.

Recommended.

[+] 2.0 To Amazon: Please move this cd out from the music section
What's changed in cheap clueless teeny bopper market driven pop? Nothing. The more things change...

[+] 2.0 Total garbage!
I can't believe all the 5-star ratings for this CD, this has to be a joke! I would give this 0 stars if I could.
While somewhat catchy, the hyper-produced songs have a familiar radio-ready quality that becomes infuriatingly mind-numbing over time, and Perry's vocals sound like a less-soulful Kelly Clarkson at best, a drunken, spurned sorority girl at worst.
Madonna and Perez Hilton may be fans, then, but if you've got even a passing interest in actually enjoying a record, don't buy this one.

[+] 6.0 Not what I expected
Katy Perry is a great singer and has the right idea with her songs. However, the musical aspect of the other tunes besides the two radio hits kind of misses the mark. Such a shame for a talented person such as she.

[+] 2.0 BORING.....UGHHH.....
THIS IS TRULY THE YEARS BIGGEST SLEEPER....AND I DON'T MEAN THAT IN A GOOD WAY....DID I MENTION THIS IS THE MOST BORING PIECE OF MUSIC(IM NOT SURE IF IT SHOULD BE CALLED THAT). WHEN LISTENING USE CAUTION. COULD POSSIBLY MAKE EARS BLEED.

[+] 10.0 Katy Perry Tackles Gender Stereotypes
There are a lot of things that work here, unlike pop albums that are hodge-podges of hits and misses. Perry's unifying theme here is gender stereotypes. From 'One of The Boys' to 'I Kissed a Girl' to 'Ur So Gay' to 'Mannequin,' Perry satirizes popular conceptions of what it means to be female or male. Yet she sincerely paints a picture of loving and longing on other tracks on like 'Thinking of You,' 'Lost,' and 'I'm Still Breathing.' This album is very listenable, song-for-song, with lots of clever hooks. The production is solid, but Perry's capable voice is what really shines here. She is successful where the recent efforts of artists like Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears, and Alanis Morrisette fall flat.

[+] 8.0 Strong debut work
I held off on buying this CD too early because -- to be perfectly honest -- the public fascination with that whole "I Kissed A Girl" song really annoyed me even though the song didn't. I have to say that, now that I've had a listen, I've been pleasantly surprised with Katy Perry's work here, and I'd give it a 4.5 (on a 5 star scale) if Amazon allowed it. Her voice is animated and fresh throughout, even on the few lesser tracks, and she takes the kinds of risk that Pink has built a career around, although Katy's vocals may be more of an acquired taste than most pop/rock singers.

One of the Boys (5 out of 5): What do you do when one of the boys suddenly blossoms into one of the girls? This is a song about the tomboy grew into the Homecoming Queen. Something about the song reminds me of early rock from The Cars.

I Kissed A Girl (5 out of 5): "It felt so wrong, it felt so right ..." Gender-bending pop/rock'n'roll at its best. It's all innocent fun until you find out you like it. It's no wonder this song is a major hit for Katy.

Waking Up in Vegas (5 out of 5): Sure, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas only so long as you don't marry some young pop starlet who ends up writing a hit rock song out of it. Buyer beware, and have fun while you're at it!

Thinking of You (5 out of 5): It's the fourth song on the album (and fourth in a row ... do I detect a theme here?) dealing with the need to suddenly re-examine one's place in the world; how do you deal with your new love when all you can think of is your last one? Great acoustic guitar opening and ending to this track, soft, heartfelt, but still understated. Personally, I think this is one of the strongest tracks here.

Mannequin (3 out of 5): "I wanna hit you just to see if you cry ..." "You're not a man, you're just a mannequin ..." Somewhat predictable and overstated teen-style angst. If I were a 16-yr-old girl in love with a high school quarterback who'd have nothing to do with me, this song would probably rock my world. But I'm not a 16-yr-old girl, so it does very little for me.

Ur So Gay (4 out of 5): A (near perfect) perfect musical insult -- woman to man. Jazzy with great horns. Very catchy lyrics. I can only imagine that Katy has great fun performing this one. Again, a song penned with a youthful sensibility. Any song that somehow works in the word 'penis' really deserves some props.

Hot N Cold (5 out of 5): Electronica pop contemplating the timeless problems of hot/cold relationships. Danceably fun with a great rockin' refrain. "Someone call the doctor, Gotta case of the love bipolar ..."

If You Can Afford me (5 out of 5): Well, it's either celebrating love or prostitution. Take your pick. Either way, it's still a great, fun tune.

Lost (3.5 out of 5): A close impersonation of Melissa Etheridge musically if Melissa Etheridge ever wrote about puking and porcelain. A real candle-waving rock style song about being 'lost' in the world that makes great use of a music box style instrumental theme-line. Wanted to like it more than I did come the end.

Self Inflicted (4.5 out of 5): We all beat ourselves up over something. This is basically Katy's chance to tell us all about the habit. Well done.

I'm Still Breathing (3 out of 5): Love ends, but the individuals don't. The track ends a bit unexpectedly, like some relationships do. Is that the metaphor? You decide.

Fingerprints (3.5 out of 5): Attitude rock, at best, the kind of stuff The Donnas have been doing for years now. "Wanna break the mold, wanna break the stereotype," so why end the album with such a middle-of-the-road rocker? A good song, but I would've ended the record on a higher note with one of the more unpredictable 5 star tunes from above.

[+] 10.0 Very Entertaining Song Lyrics
I have a rule for buying CDS: I have to like at least four of the songs to make it worth my while...I took a chance and bought this after hearing only two of the songs played on the radio, but it turns out that I like almost every song.

There are a couple where she sings with a very high yet soft voice that I thought was kind of boring, but I enjoyed her vocals the rest of the time. Her style reminds me of the Go-Gos Beauty and the Beat, and Thompson Twins. (Yeah, I am an an 80s fan).

The lyrics are hysterical; she's very good at telling stories, and even though you might be tempted to think she is exagerating, I could relate to a lot of the scenarios she describes.

I love ALL KINDS of music - I have very eclectic tastes, but I have to say it was refreshing to hear a female vocalist who didn't create another hip-hop album or a whiny alternative album (you know, the ones where every single song is directed to some guy).

After hearing I Kissed a Girl, I visited her My Space page just to see what everyone was talking about and instantly LOVED Hot N Cold, so I bought the CD. Nearly every song is great, but Hot N Cold is still the best. So glad it's the next single. Don't judge Katy Perry just on I Kissed a Girl. She is a very underrated vocalist. She's much more than the novelty act some people think. Get this CD!

[+] 10.0 The first cd I have bought in a long time where I love ALL the songs!
Before the advent of iTunes I was guilty of buying cds for just one song. I would end up liking just that one song and that's it. I loved the song " I kissed a girl" so I figured the other songs on this cd would be good too. All I can say is WOW! I LOVE THIS CD!! I like all the songs and you can listen to the songs multiple time without getting bored with them! All the songs are different and Perry does a good job of entertwining her real life into her lyrics. I highly reccommend this cd! It's amazing I have it playing all the time now during homework, work etc. so BUY IT NOW!

[+] 8.0 great debut
This is surprisingly good. There is something about Katy Perry's voice that draws you in. She's not a great singer, but she is interesting and engaging. There is freshness and energy in her songs. Also check out Charlotte Sometimes.

[+] 8.0 Teenage rock, perhaps too much Avril Lavinge-ish.
Noisiy guitar riffs, loud vocals, risky lyrics and cheesy slow ballads made this album just perfect for lost teenagers who are looking for a new Avril Lavinge to follow.

Apart from a few good ones, including of course the hit singles, there's not really much new on this "Pink-meets-Avril Lavinge-wannabe-Alanis Morisette" experiment.

The good ones are really good and the other ones, well, are just not much relevant... Probably, rather than releasing full album, a Maxi-EP would have been better enough as one can feel how some of the cuts are in here just for filling.

Good, but not much more of it.

[+] 10.0 Love it!
When I first heard Katy's first single, I wasn't all that into it. A couple months later, the song was finally stuck in my head and I listened to the cd on Amazon to see if it was good or not. Then, on a whim I bought it--and I defnitely don't regret it! This debut album is simply fantastic and much more original than what has been coming out. From what I have listened to on the cd, Katy has a sharp, creative tongue and doesn't hold back for anyone. She starts out with the incredibly strong song, "One of the Boys," about being just another friend to the guy she loves, and ends with the incredibly inspirational song "Fingerprints," which is about doing your part to make history in some way. While there are a lot of cracks about "I Kissed a Girl," Katy is a truly great performer and her cd is much, much better than her hot single. She is definitely worth checking out and I hope she has staying power--we need more music like hers!

[+] 2.0 real gimmicky
after I kissed a girl there isn't much else you can go because that track caught on, but Kathy Perry is another artist who is trying to re-sell a 80's style hybrid vibe and while good on the eyes she is way short on talent.vocally she is weak and nothing on here speaks on lasting. cute slick Production, but short on material and songs.

[+] 8.0 Solid effort from an artist with huge potential
Katy Perry may have started her career in the Christian genre, but this alt-pop goddess soars on her mainstream debut in the form of One of the Boys. Her smash single "I Kissed a Girl" is one of the catchiest songs this summer, and surely received most of its attention due to its off topic subject matter. "Ur So Gay" is another gem, albeit not nearly as catchy melodically, but more so lyrically as Perry lists all the reasons her ex is "so gay" even though "you don't even like boys"; I personally don't find any anti-homosexuality remarks here, but obviously songs like this have grabbed attention from those in the homosexual community for usage of the "Ur So Gay" moniker. But "Hot & Cold" stands to be just as catchy, if not more, than "I Kissed a Girl." One of the Boys is simply a delight to the ears, a piece of rock-infused pop that displays a powerful voice intermixed with some great songs. Sure, not everything here can match the incredible heights of "I Kissed a Girl," and yet moments of brilliance permeate throughout: for example, "Thinking of You" is a powerful ballad of heartbreak with a driving bridge and knowing lyrics. Overall, One of the Boys can easily be considered one of the best pop albums of the year, and deservedly so.
