[+] 6.0 Ear Protection with FM and MP3 Input
First of all, these keep out sound levels. Why I use them.

Secondly, they have a 1/8th inch audio input. Why I like them. I patch my mp3 player into my protected sound space.

Thirdly, I live in the middle of nowhere. I have no idea whether the FM receiver works well or not. Sorry.

But, I like them.

[+] 2.0 Great! Don't hear someone yell out "Heads up!"
There is a basic problem with this product. If you on a site where your ears need serious protection, you are probably on a site where safety is a big issue. Audible distractions are bad enough for a driver (as NHTSA and others are now saying). On a construction site or around a jet engine, the distraction of music or talk radio could get you killed. My guess is most safety-conscious sites would ban something like this (except in New York City, where Mayor Bloomberg enjoys seeing construction workers killed).

[+] 2.0 LISTEN TO THOSE IN THE KNOW, DON'T BUY
I BOUGHT THESE TO LISTEN TO MOSTLY TALK AM RADIO WHILE MOWING AND WORKING IN A CABINET SHOP. SINCE THESE ARE FOR HEARING PROTECTION, THE VOLUME CONTROL IS LIMITED. SOME AM STATIONS THAT ARE NOT PICKED UP AS GOOD AS THEY SHOULD CANNOT BE HEARD VERY WELL BECAUSE YOU CANNOT TURN UP THE VOLUME QUITE ENOUGH. I FIND MYSELF TURNING MY HEAD AT TIMES JUST TO TRY AND HEAR THE TALK SHOWS. FM IS SOME BETTER, BUT IT TO WILL BREAK UP WHEN YOUR FACING IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION.I WILL NEVER BUY A SET OF THESE AGAIN BECAUSE OF THE WEAK VOLUME. I JUST BOUGHT THE Sangean DT-210 AM/FM Pocket-Size Digital Radio, BECAUSE THE REVIEWS ARE MUCH BETTER. I WILL KNOW THIS WEEK IF THE MUCH BRAGGED ABOUT POCKET-SIZED DIGITAL RADIO WILL GET THE JOB DONE FOR ME. IF YOU MUST, GO AHEAD AND BUT THE AM FM PELTOR ON THIS PAGE...WE TRIED TO WARN YOU!!!

[+] 6.0 Decent...But Not Great
I work in the lawn care industry and have owned several of the worktunes units. I have owned two of these particular units and, although I am not impressed with them, I think they are decent for the money. The first one of these I got last year, and it developed a short in the wiring after using it about 4 months. I have had the one I am currently using for about 6 months, and so far, so good. I realize I am fairly rough on them in my line of work. Overall quality is decent.
FM reception is good for the most part. I also like the mp3 jack. I enjoy listening to my mp3 player sometimes while mowing. The main problem is that the AM is almost useless. I do enjoy talk radio, and much of the time you can't get AM reception decent enough to hear anything. Maybe if I am out mowing in a large field and the wind is blowing just right I can listen in.
So, if you want to use it for FM and mp3 music, it's not a bad deal if you can get it under $50. If you want to listen to AM radio, save your money!

[+] 10.0 Better than ever now with MP3 input.
I really like these, I have 3 pair. 2 are the older analog tuning style which are at best OK, and 1 that has the digital tuning. Now with the MP3 input too I am sure they rock.

[+] 8.0 Work tunes review
I work for a machine shop that was purchased by a bigger company. They applied some new rules and one of them was hearing protection. So I did some research and found this headset had a fm radio and mp3 player plug. The fm radio doesn't work in about 10% of the building because of shelves and machines which causes a lot of static. But i found the mp3 player works great. I bought a 6 in wire plug that fits right on top of the headset. The radio and mp3 player sound good but not excellent. The work tune headset is definitely a good choice. It works for firing a hand gun also,it muffles out about 70% of all sounds. OH the earmuffs fit just perfect over your ears and I have semi large ears..LOL

[+] 8.0 works well
This product works great and I am very pleased with it. The only concern I have is that I have not had a chance to use it on my tractor and I do not know if will be loud enough. I am hoping it will cancel enough ambient noise and I will be to able hear it above the engine and equipment noise.

I purchased the Work Tunes for my father-in-law. He loves listening to the radio when he's out in the yard. These give him his music, and talk shows all in safe levels from using any power equipment. Thanks for a great product!

[+] 4.0 Poor quality sound
I bought this item so I could listen to my iPod while working in a loud spray booth. Unfortunately, although the muffs are comfortable and effective in blocking outside noise, the sound quality of the speakers is very poor. Five dollar Aiwa headphones sound much better. I've started wearing earbud-style headphones underneath basic ten-dollar AO hearing protectors. While this is not quite as confortable, I can actually enjoy my iPod. Also, the maximum volume on the WorkTunes is pretty low, but not too low and quite understandable given the purpose of the item.

[+] 2.0 GREAT NOISE PROTECTION!!
I have had these for awhile now and was not impressed with them. Volume is not great and the AM reception is terrible. They are extremely directional in the AM mode, I listen to talk radio alot and find it extremely aggravating to listen to. You subconsciously find yourself turning you head to compensate for the poor reception. I live in the outskirts of Atlanta and we have some pretty strong AM stations but you find when you mow the lawn they work great in one direction and not the other. The FM band is much better if you are a music lover, but you will be disappointed if you like AM. I guess they are better than nothing until something better comes outs. You would think with all the technologies out there they could produce a radio with good reception for $70.00.

[+] 4.0 Fine For i-pod Use But Digital Tuner Quality Really Lacks
This is my fourth Worktunes, third version and the first "digital" incarnation. All of them have offered good hearing protection and reasonable fidelity. But this last pair's tuner really lacks. While walking about my shop these go from 5 by 5 reception to pure static with just a turn of the head. Doing the same walk with any of my analog sets might produce some fuzz but you'd never miss a word. Even outdoors the static issue is present. If you plan on using your i-pod as the primary sound source then these are fine. Otherwise the tuner in these are unacceptable. If these were some off brand that cost half what I paid I'd still rate them poor. Guess what AO Safety - When I need another set I'll be looking at other brands.

[+] 10.0 A Really Great Product
I read the reviews before I ordered this product. Some said it was junk, others said it was good. I usually read the reviews of others when I purchase products on line and usually wind up making my own decision and when I get the product I wonder how the other came up with the opinions they have. This is really a great product. As I type this review I am listening to a FM station out of New Orleans, La some 85 miles away inside my home which has a metal roof and I am getting perfect reception. I am extremely pleased the AO Safety 90541 WorkTunes. I can't imagine why anyone else wouldn't be. Again, A REAL GREAT PRODUCT.

[+] 10.0 AO Safety Work Tunes
I've used an earlier version of the AO Work Tunes for several years and I've loved them. My older Work Tune wires deteriorated to the point where they shorted out and killed this pair. The current pair are a replacement. I am very pleased at the improvements in tuning, programming of stations, and the new display for the AM or FM station.

[+] 10.0 Great addition to the shop
These muffs work great in my shop. I have an XM receiver that transmits a FM signal to a radio, but when I'm grinding or doing noisy work I slip on these ear protectors. I can walk all over with the sound coming through. They are very comfortable to wear for a long period.

There isn't anything I don't like about them. A friend tried them and he's going to get a pair for his shop.

[+] 4.0 semi-acceptable, to tight
too tight on head. It hurts my jaw bone after an hour. It does block surrounding noise , but then I can't here my phone or people sneaking up on me, even when they are not sneaking. Because of the tight fit, I can hear and feel every step I take.

[+] 4.0 Controls poorly designed

I agree with the majority of the reviewers about the quality of the FM receiver -- it's dismal. However I'm fortunate in that there's one tolerable station with a very strong signal nearby, so I get reception (on that one station) with very little static. All other stations are hopeless however.

The product wasn't designed with a great deal of thought as to the controls. The on-off volume control is located so that if you wear the headphones with the volume control on the right (as most right-handed people will do) it will hit your shoulder or collar as you work, changing the volume unpredictably. This is pretty dangerous as your instinct is to immediately correct the volume, not necessarily a good thing if you're working power tools. The solution it to flip the headphones so that the controls are on the left. I don't think the stereo quality of these headphones is such that flipping the left/right channels is going to make much difference to the listening experience.

A third and final note -- when the batteries get low, the earphones give off an earsplitting beep at random intervals. Given that these headphones are intended as HEARING PROTECTION, what designer thought it would be appropriate to generate a 90 decibel tone in the user's ear?

[+] 10.0 Well worth it!
I do a lot of things outdoors and these come in handy often. This is actually my 2nd pair that I have owned over the past 5 years. My last pair didn't have the digital tuning like this one does. The only reason why I replaced it, was because my buddy complained his ipod hurt his ears when he cut the lawn or when he used the snow blower. Although he got my used pair, he absolutely loves it. These are comfortable to wear, radio stations come in clear, and they really protect my ears. I use them almost everyday. I promise, you won't be disappointed!

[+] 2.0 As bad as it gets
I refused to believe the reviews. This is Peltor right? People that complain must be in lousy reception areas, right? I have a number of Peltor products including the first dial tuner Worktunes, which work great. But I wanted digital tuning to make it easier to change the stations.

These are absolutely awful. The construction is a step down from the original Worktunes and the sound is horrible. I live within 10 miles of the stations I listen to and both the FM and AM were fuzzy and weak. They tuned in but had so much white noise it was unenjoyable.

Some products should be removed from the shelves. This is one of them.

[+] 8.0 Overall I'm happy because....
A). The price was right. I wasn't prepared to spend over $50 for something to mow my lawn with.
B). Although the radio is garbage (35 miles from NYC) I only wanted to use with my Sirius so I don't care. The volume output is low, but that is the point...to protect your hearing. These are not in-home stereo headphones so the sound is also "tin can like". However the hearing protection is excellent!
C). Comfortable to wear for the 45-60 min it takes to do my lawn.

[+] 10.0 So far so good.
This is my second pair of WorkTunes. My first lasted for a year until the apparently common problem of the wire breaking from the inevitable flexing of the unit putting it on and off my head.
This is my first digital unit, and the ability to quickly find a preselected station is appreciated. AM and FM reception is good, but I do live close to the transmitters.
The noise protection is really appreciated when mowing the lawn, and yet I can still listen to the radio.
The earset is comfortable enough that I'll often wear these rather than a different type of radio with ear buds when I'm doing work outside that is not noisy. That's because this set doesn't easily come off when moving around.

[+] 10.0 This was perfect!
I purchased this headset radio for my husband, who spends a lot of time out in the garden, but especially mowing our lawn & running a noisy leaf pick-up wagon- & he couldn't be more pleased with it. He can now listen to his favorite radio host while working outside, with it blocking out almost all other sounds- with great sound clarity as well.

[+] 8.0 Pelter Headphones
Ass far as noise cancellation these headphones work fabulously. I work inside a government building with tons of walls and machinery and I think this is detrimental to the reception I get with these headphones. They work better in some parts of the building than others. I was hoping the reception would be better. I would buy them again tho.

[+] 6.0 Hearing Protector - Good - Radio - fair
I purchased the Peltor 90541 WorkTunes AM/FM Hearing Protector with Digital Tuning for a specific purpose. I wanted to re-transmit TV audio and be able to adjust the volume for myself and leave the main control on the TV as-is for my spouse.
My plan has not worked well. Not the fault of Worktunes, though.

I must say what others have said. This is a fine product to protect your hearing while out riding the lawn tractor or using a chain saw. If you have too many strong stations closeby it may dissapoint though. The selectivity is not really great. Stations bleed over. The sensitivity IMO is OK. Can hear distant stations trying to come in... (maybe still not a really good thing). But what kind of radio do you think they are going to fit into such a small space? lol It won't be a $300.00 FM tuner, will it?

[+] 6.0 A little disappointed, but...
I bought the Peltor 90541 so that I could listen to ball games while mowing the lawn. I live in a somewhat rural area, yet it didn't occur to me that I would NOT be able to get all the stations my car radio does. Unfortunately one frequency I do not receive well is the one I listen to the Red Sox on. For the FM stations that DO come in, about 6-8 of them, it is great. The hearing protection works fine, and I enjoy listening to the music. So, they are good, but have limitations. Maybe there is a way to get a better antenna?

[+] 6.0 Good for noise reduction
I purchased the Peltor AM/FM Hearing Protector at Amazon primarily for use while riding my lawn tractor. I found it to be very comfortable and superb at reducing the engine's noise. Where it is lacking is in radio reception. I live in an area where strong radio signals are customarily available and the unit does pick up several stations. The problem is that all exhibit poor sound quality and considerable static. I have resorted to using ear phones (ear buds) that run off a small portable radio in my pocket. I wear the Peltor over the ear buds and the sound is perfect. If I were to purchase again, I would buy the model without the radio.

[+] 2.0 Don't last
I have purchased over 20 pairs of these headphones for my employees. They have a specific defect related to the crimped wires that travel between the headphones (At one point in my life I was a quality manager for a power electronics company). They always fail in the end 3 months to 14months of normal use can be expected. I have spoken with Peltor at length about this defect they give you a run around.

[+] 8.0 Does the job
I purchased these to use while mowing the yard and doing noisy tasks around the house. I use them mostly with my iPod connected to the auxilliary input jack. This works ok, but the lack of a volume control on the Aux input is a bit of a disappointment. Instead I have to use the volume adjustment on the iPod which is not as convenient. The FM tuner works quite well even in areas where signal is weak. This may be due in part to the large antenna. Which is my only other complaint. The antenna does get in the way when I am mowing under trees and such> But it does seem to be very sturdy. After several encounters with low hanging limbs, it shows no signs of damage.

[+] 8.0 Just what I needed
I've used the standard ear protection for quite a while. I wear them when I mow, weed trim, chainsaw, grind, and sand with the big electric sander. For years, it was just a muffled drone while working. Now that I have the WorkTunes, it really has made a number of these tasks more enjoyable. I love being able to listen to a game or music while I'm working. The batteries seem to last...I'm not sure how long since the first set have lasted for a couple months already.

The only complaint I have is that the radio volume is a bit limited. There are times when you have something playing that is too soft to be heard over the drone of the machine. Otherwise, the the sound is decent, the fit is good, and they work great.

[+] 2.0 The WORST sound quality I've ever heard!!!
After accidentally breaking my old Sony Walkman digital AM/FM headset/radio, I found that there is really nothing available like them anymore. When I found these, I decided to try them since I could also use them while mowing the lawn, working in the shop, etc.

While I didn't have reception issues as some have reported, the SOUND from the Peltor 90541, either AM or FM, is so hollow, nasal, and unpleasant that I cannot tolerate them. No bass, no treble.

Imagine the worst sounding radio you ever heard... OK, then try these and you'll discover your new worst-ever sounding radio! With fresh batteries, maximum volume is very limited, and distorted at that. I'm sure that's by design, so you don't ruin your hearing with extended use, but listening for more than 3 seconds will induce projectile vomiting, in me at least.

I had hoped to be able to use them for news, sports, and talk radio, but they sound soooo bad, all I heard was my inner voice repeating "you paid $60.00 for sound this repulsive - what were you thinking?".

The noise reduction is OK (My 40 year old David Clark protectors are far better), but the radio is useless for me. In my wildest imagination, I didn't think these would sound so awful!

[+] 2.0 AM reception much worse than older model
I have the older Worktunes which has manual tuning. I was interested in this model because it adds an IPOD jack and digital tuning (it is a pain to manually tune stations when mowing). The new model has one massive problem: the AM reception is markedly worse than the older unit, to the point where I strongly recommend you avoid this if AM reception is important to you). I compared this to the old model by standing at various points in the lawn. When turning in different directions the AM sound would go in and out, even with the largest local stations in our city. This was not a problem with the older unit. The manufacturer must improve the AM reception to make this a valid upgrade to the older model.

[+] 6.0 Nice product, bad soune quality
The product is comfortable to wear and rugged, but the sound quality could be much better. I only use it with my ipod, and you have to turn the volume way up to hear anything, and then the sound quality is bad.

[+] 10.0 Earphones are wonderful
I have owned a pair of these for about 4 years and always wear them doing yard work. They decrease the noise quite a bit. Battery life is incredible with these. I use good batteries but probably get between 75 to 100 hours of use before having to replace the batteries and the reception is very good. They are worth owning just for the noise reduction alone.

[+] 10.0 Love these headphones!
I bought these headphones for my husband who is a farmer and therefore spends a lot of time out on the tractors. He had an older pair that he had misplaced so i bought him this pair. HE LOVES IT! Says it is much better than the older model because you can preset the radio stations you want to listen to rather than fumble around with a dial. Of course, we live in a rural area but he has been amazed at how clear the stations are picked up and how good the sound quality is. Excellent hearing protection as well....he never hears the cellphone when i call to tell him it is time for dinner, but oh well....you cant have it all i suppose! A GREAT PRODUCT! BUY WITH CONFIDENCE!

[+] 6.0 ehhh!
Peltor 90541 WorkTunes AM/FM Hearing Protector with Digital Tuning I had the old analog tunner before. After owning this one for a week, mowed the lawn twice and sat around the house with it. The antenna has not improved, but in a positive light, it does return to the correct station after it floats between two others (I don't have to manually dial the station in again). I can understand this with an AM station, but why does it happen with the FM stations as well? I can not whole heartedly indorse this headset, but I need it primarily to protect my hearing - does a great job at that task, just not a great radio.

[+] 10.0 Worktunes lives up to my expectations..
I'm a radio junkie. I have always enjoyed radio whether in my home, driving in my car or at the office. When I saw these Peltor Worktunes online I thought to myself that they would be great while working in the yard or excersizing, walking, etc. I felt that they would even give me a little more motivation to do those mundane chores because this way I can hear my favorite talk shows or listen to music of my choosing while performing them.

Well I was right. Even sitting on the lawn tractor and mowing 2.5 acres of lawn, I listened to all my favorite radio stations with no problem hearing them. The noise reduction from the enviroment is tremendous and the 17 hp gasoline engine two feet in front of me was a low muffle. I live 10 miles outside of the city in a rural area and the radio stations I like to listen to broadcast anywhere from 20 miles (local AM oldies) to 200 miles away (FM rock powerhouse) and of course at night I get the long range AM stations from hundreds of miles out. The reception is what I expected. After reading some of the reviews I was a bit concerned that they wouldn't pull in the stations I wanted to hear. This isn't a GE table radio with 10 tubes from the 1950s, it's a portable headset, yet I can still pull in my favorite stations. The digital display leaves no doubt as to the frequency the radio is tuned. Setting my five favorite FM and AM stations was easy enough and fairly intuitive. It might be tricky for some but it's certainly way easier than programming a vintage 1980's VCR.

I'm off to the recumbant bike now to make sure I get my cardio excersize and these babies will be on my head keeping me company. Well done Peltor.

[+] 10.0 very good hearing protection
This product was made my a company that specialises in hearing protection equipment, so it's definately first rate hearing protection. As far as the radio is concerned, I'm not all that fastidious. As long as I can get the stations I want and understand what is being said, that's ok with me. The radio can store 5 of your favorite stations which can be changed by pressing the button on the outside. A product like this is much better than a walkman or any kind of radio where something is dangling on your belt. Just don't use it where you need to hear others because it blocks out sound very well.
