[+] 8.0 Easy to use technology
I have had my codefree DVD player for some time now and use it regularly. It is very easy to hook up and use. The remote is basic and the DVD player doesn't have more than a couple of buttons. That's ok though because I am not looking for a fancy gadget to play my international DVDs. I got a useful tool for a very reasonable price. The only drawback is the disc slot, which sometimes gets stuck and has to be manually nudged. No big deal though, it's a minor inconvenience which occurs once in a while.

[+] 10.0 What a great find...
I actually didn't buy this player on Amazon. My mom had it.

After buying some Region 2 DVD's (of ER. They happen to have all 15 seasons out on DVD, while they're still only at season 11 here in the states), and being assured that I could set my old player to a "region free" status, I became frustrated and annoyed that yes, I could set the player to that status, but the picture was terrible, and they played in black and white. I tolerated it. Then my player broke (not because of the Region deal, but because it was a piece of junk in the first place). While looking for Region Free players, I stumbled across this one here on Amazon. It looked suspiciously familiar, so I called her and asked the model code. It was the same one. So I asked to borrow hers (she rarely uses it). I brought it home, hooked it up, and lo and behold, it played the Region 2 DVD's perfectly (yes, you have to enter the code, but as this is specified as "region free", it won't harm the player or your TV) AND in color! I've been doing a happy dance ever since. I'm right now watching ER Season 12 (which isn't available here for another month), my favorite season. I also have the next three on deck.

This player is a great value, and if you're a foreign film buff, or just want to get around the frustration of not having shows or movies that have already been shown or been in theaters here in the states (the main reason for this "coding" was to prevent other regions from having "in theater" movies available on DVD before they were "in theater"...since ER has been off the air for a year now, and the US side of the pond has been slower than molasses in getting the DVD's out, I think it's only fair), get this player. It's extremely easy to use, and the video/sound quality is great.

[+] 8.0 Very good but watch what year yours was made!
Make sure it's made within the 2 year time frame Phillips will replace anything defective! The remote I got with this broke after a few uses so I have to order a universal to use with it because its outside the time frame and they will no longer replace the broken one. Other than that it plays eveything wonderfully, a little bit off with PAL format but hardly noticeable. I love that I can put any DVD in it with no troubles.

[+] 10.0 fantastic!
I was pleasantly surprised with this DVD player. As I was just replacing my old One Region player, it was as easy as plug the new one in and go. No codes, no programming... I simply plugged the player in and pressed play. I was worried about soundtracks vs. movements, but the voices lined up perfectly with the talking and I honestly could NOT be more happy :) I recommend this one to ANYONE who's a technophobe like me. Hey, if I can hook this up, anyone can.

[+] 10.0 So pleased with this player, I bought a 2nd one!
I've had no problem switching from my US DVD's to those purchased from the UK. I thought the DVD player was such a good value, that I bought a second one for the bedroom. Very pleased with the purchase and would recommend it for the price and ease of use.

[+] 10.0 Perfect for Multi-Region SD viewing
DVD players don't seem to last very long these days. We've been through 3 over the last 6 years, in all cases the loading mechanism broke. Fortunately, they are much cheaper now.

We wanted a DVD player that would play PAL and multi-region discs and also be reliable. While the latter of course will remain to be seen, the universal play part seems to be working. It plays Russian restricted PAL DVDs right out of the box. I did not need to enter any code from remote. Note of course that I only tried Russian DVDs, so YMMV with those from other regions.

DVD players keep getting smaller and smaller each time, and this one came smaller still. It feels weightless, although does not look especially cheap. The picture is very good, through component video on our old-fashioned SD CRT 27" Toshiba. Please note that this player *does not* have a HD output. However, because it fits the description and its task in our home perfectly, I am not knocking off any points. For now, well recommended. I will be sure to post an update in case it breaks prematurely.

[+] 6.0 Stock cables useless
With a caveat:

This works great; has a very good quality image, plays all the discs from different regions with no problem and no coding or preparation, but...

The cable set supplied with the DVD player is completely inadequate. Three cables are supplied with the set, and you need the five-cable setup with any new television.

I have a two-month old, top-of-the-line Samsung LCD widescreen (very large screen), and plugging in this DVD player using the three cables produced only a very grainy, B&W picture. The three cables just weren't transmitting enough digital information to the new TV.

So, I swapped out my five-cable Monster set from another device that goes into the television, and,

Voila! Perfect picture.

I guess the three cable setup would work OK with an older TV, but not with the big new ones. They have larger data needs.

A set of good cables (like the Monster brand) for this DVD player costs at least $40, and can go up to $75. There is no other connection available on the DVD player (like HDMI), so it's cables or nothing. So, my "bargain" Phillips DVD player just got a lot more expensive, since I had to buy new cables to get a good picture.

The new high-quality cables, however, produce an excellent image.

Still, a word to the wise - big new plasma or LCD television? You're probably going to need another set of cables beside the ones supplied in the box with the DVD player. Add that cost to the cost of the DVD player to get your real overall cost.

[+] 10.0 Great Region Code Free Player for very little Money
July 28th, 2009 Monterey Peninsula, California USA

I own this Philips DVD Player and couldn't be happier. It plays my European Pal Disc's without any problems. I purchased my Unit from Ebay and the price was very inexpensive. I own several Multi Region Code Free DVD Players. Two of them are Cyberhome. One is an Akai. The other is this Philips Unit and then I have one made by RCA....
The Cyberhome Units are ok, but sometimes skip parts of the DVD and freeze up... My Philips DVD Player and the RCA and Akai do not freeze or skip. I have done much research by reading reviews and they are always helpful.
Anyone looking for an inexpensive and well made Player would be very happy with this Philips Player...

[+] 10.0 Worked right away
Found some super deals on DVD's in the U.K., came home knowing we'd need to get a new DVD player, bought this one, and it works great! Didn't even need to put in a code. And, in answer to another review, it does have Fast Forward and Rewind on the remote- just use the arrows on either side of the OK button. Now I'll be able to catch up on all my favorite British shows!

[+] 8.0 Great All-Region Player for the Price. No Fast FWD/REV
Very pleased with this DVD player. Set up fast and easy. Only thing I'd like to add would be fast forward and reverse. You can skip ahead by preset stops - acts if you will - but not frame by frame. Otherwise, great picture clarity, wonderful sound, easy to use.

[+] 10.0 Does the Job
I didn't even have to read the booklet it's that simple. Just connected it like any other DVD player, inserted my Region 2 PAL foreign disc and it played. I could even play it through my VCR and use my video enhancer with it. It is a good little machine and well worth the price.

[+] 8.0 So far so good!
My DVD collection spans several regions, so a region-free player is a must. This was one of the cheapest I could find. I've had it for several months now and so far it's working just fine. The only reason I've rated it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the build "feels" a bit flimsy. Having said that - nothing has broken with careful treatment.

[+] 10.0 Need a Trouble-Free Multi-region Player?
PHILIPS DVP3140 - ALL REGION CODEFREE MULTI SYSTEM DVD PLAYER WITH DivX. PLAYS PAL/NTSC DVDS FROM ANY COUNTRY ON NTSC TV. REMOTE INCLUDED.
This product does just what it says! I'm a big fan of many British TV series such as The Onedin Line, When the Boat Comes in and Joking Apart which have been ignored for USA release. Right now I'm enjoying a Siegfried from the Bayreuth Festival conducted by Barenboim in full surround stereo which will not play on a Region 1-only player. Heartily recommended and worked for me right out of the box. If you need a region-free player, this is your perfect choice!
Reviewer [AFEN9M1OC80MU] | Date [April 10, 2009]
[+] 10.0 Great, but watch out for component format
The composite output looks very good on Region 1 and Region 2 disks (the only ones I've tested so far). As with most of these thin units you need to make sure the disk is actually in the tray properly so it won't be grabbed by the door.

Beware: The component output is YPbPr so I was unable to use that on my TV, which has RGB inputs.

I'm giving this 5 stars anyway, because a) it's not the unit's fault that I misread the component format, and b) for $43 I don't expect much from the tray mechanism. Put simply, the return on investment is good.

We bought this to play region 2 DVD's in the States. It worked well right out of the box, we didn't need to punch in codes or anything. Slim design is a nice touch- doesn't take up too much room. Also like the option of playing DiVX files.

Well worth the price, plus shipping. Thanks

I bought this DVD player in November '08 and ordered some British DVDs online that weren't available in the US. The DVDs finally arrived (another story) and I excitedly put them in. [+] 8.0 Plays Region 2/PALs Perfectly
I just bought this for Christmas '08 so I can watch region 2/PAL DVDs -- hooked it up to my TV in 5 minutes, changed the color setting to NSTC, popped a region 2 DVD in and it played perfectly. No need to enter any codes at all. Great price, too -- so don't miss out on region 2 DVDs! Get this and you'll be good to go.

We purchased several DVD's from our trip to China this summer but did not have a multiregion player to view them with. I purchased this one, just pluged it in, and it worked great! I did not have to enter any special code, it works with both our US discs and the ones we purchased in China.

I couldn't be happier!

[+] 4.0 B&W picture
I read all the glowing reviews about this DVD player. I purchased one. I dont' know if the player is defective or not, but it played back in Black and White picture. After about 20 minutes the picture went to color.
I tried to adjust the controls with the menu button. I had no success. It did play the PAL format perfectly. Because of the effort I had to take to return it I decided to junk it. All othe DVD Players worked fine on the TV I was using.

[+] 10.0 seamless transition between regions...
I bought this item in Nov 2008. Could be the other reviewers have an older version. THERE ARE NO CODES TO TYPE IN. Pop in any dvd you want, it just plays. No drama, no technical issues. It plays regions 1-6, NTSC/PAL. And it DOES eject - just press the stop button for 5 seconds. READ THE MANUAL dude!
Highly recommended. Maybe not the fanciest player, but I'm guessing you're looking at this for the multi-region feature, and that feature WORKS.

[+] 10.0 Great Region-Free DVD Player with Great Price!
I've been in the market for a great quality region free dvd player for years. Since I always buy DVDs from Asia(I travel a lot), also DVDs from Japan, Taiwan, and Europe. I have a huge collection of Pal and all region dvds.
I used to have Apex DVD player which works for multi-region. But it has hummble big noise when it plays. You can even hear the disc spinning... Then I got another one Lasonic multi-region, works without noise but the remote controll barely responsive and it's very fragile...
Also I'm tired of watching DVDs on my laptop, or even some dvds you have to switch region from 1 to other then have to switch back and forth - only works for 4 times on laptop...
Finally I got a Region Free DVD player so far I did't see any flaws and it really works - for any DVDs I have from China, Japan, Europe, Taiwan...
I'm so excited and I'm also ready to try to get rid of my PAL dvds since I can barely watch them... Now they are all works perfect on my 46in HDTV!
I only have one concerns: since I hooked up the Coadixal cable with my AV-receiver to get a better surround sound. I still want to use my previous Sony 5-DVD players to watch just NTSC and Region 1 movies.(I just want the Philip one works on import dvds and the machine can last longer) But it seemed the AV_receiver only has 1 coadixal imput. So what can I do without change the digital sound cable?

[+] 10.0 DOES THE JOB
Having lived in the UK for several years, I had many DVDs from Region 2 that I got tired of watching on my notebook computer. Investing $80 (with shipping) in this nifty little machine was a great idea. Following the instructions to change the region setting to region free, (that another reviewer helpfully posted), I then inserted my disc and hoped all would be well. It was. Haven't used it much yet, and I must say that when I turn on the power the machine makes some rather disconcerting noises, but so far so good!

this player has many issues... ours stopped working about 8 months after lightly using it. Just would not play discs anymore. also the forward and reverse is horrible you seem to always forward a chapter bc the button does not seem to tell the difference if you want to forward through a scene. so it is hard to do that and fustrating. I would not buy this again.

[+] 10.0 Good ROI
We bought this player for a 13" TV/VHS unit. Because we have several European region DVD's with cartoons, the region-free capability was important to us. Appears to work fine with US and European DVD's. This is a very good choice for a region free player and also works well as the "everyday" player for your movie watching as well.

I think everyone should have a Multi-Region DVD Player, Because some movies that aren't avaialble here in the USA but are in Great Britain. When I got mine I didn't have to put in any codes for it to play different regions, I just put in my Pal copy of "I, Monster" starring Christopher Lee and it played as if it was region 1, I was thrilled
the picture was "PERFECT" I would recommend this model. Also I ordered it on the 24th and it arrived today, talk about fast shipping. Yippee

[+] 10.0 Awsome Product!!!!!!! WOW
I was really impressed with this DVD player. It does work with all the region, Also has great picture is great on the TV.. I live in the usa and it works perectly. )The only think that I found out is that I couldnt find the button if it has one on the remote to open the dvd play but other then that is very awsome).. If you want to play DVD from different region get this one anyone. Like the first review you have to open the try on the dvd player and hit the numbers from the remote 9879 then enter 0 that will play all region. A box dont come up that you see at all an you might think it didnt work but it does it will say somthing about set to all region then just pop in the dvd from the different region and it will play no problem you might have to adjust the pic to full screen then it will cover the whole screen. But it does work and great picture on it.. IF i need another I will buy this one.. I got my for 39.00 at Circuit City they sell then thats the only retail store that I found that found them around me an they also on there web site too. So if you need a multi DVD play get this one you wont be disappointed at all. I wasnt at all

[+] 10.0 Philips DVP-3120: An in-depth review
I have this DVD player and I love it. Now I watch all my movies and TV shows on it. It's a shame it doesn't play HD-DVD or Blu-ray Disc formats, I really want to enjoy the new technology.
I have over 3,000 DVDs now including movies, a Britney Spears concert in Las Vegas and some TV series like, for example, Alias, Lost, Heroes, Desperate Housewives, 24, etc.
As I said before, it's a shame it doesn't play HD-DVD or Blu-ray Disc formats, I really want to enjoy the new technology.

[+] 10.0 Multi-region playback is in!!
I could hardly believe that my new DVD player actually plays all regions until I hooked it up to my letterbox TV after coming back home from my European vacation. It appears that it actually came around the first week I was gone, just when I though it would come before I left. What a relief!! Believe it or not, it works really well on my American, German and Chinese DVDs. In fact, I was able to watch the DVD I had bought almost 3 months ago and I love it. I give the Philips staff all the best and have faith they can make their next line of equipment even better.

[+] 2.0 A Waste of Money
The performance of our DVP3140 was spotty right from the beginning. At first we blamed an occasional disc, but over time it has become obvious that this player has "issues." Even brand new, flawless discs -- both commercial releases and PC-burned content -- will yield anything from random artifacts to intermittent freeze-ups. In terms of enjoyment, the DVP3140's worth quickly goes right through the floor. I don't plan to buy another Philips product ever again.

[+] 8.0 Plays well-like the other Phillips DVD players
I bought this player for my best friend as a birthday present. I had bought two region free players last year--both were the discontinued Phillips 640 model--and they have worked fine. I bought this one from a dealer as a refurbished model; when my friend opened it and when we put in the DVD (that I'd purchased from the UK) it did not play. I immediately checked the Amazon website and thanks to one of the reviews I was able to get it to play the UK discs and the ones bought here in the US as well. I know my friend is happy because she can now see the Bad Girls series without having to wait for it to crawl by every week on one of the cable channels. This is a very good choice for a region free player and also works well as the "everyday" player for your movie watching as well.

[+] 8.0 Easy to use, does what it is supposed to do!!
I was struggling with my old Coby multi-region player which had the cumbersome requirement of having to take out the disk and punch in an on-screen code to get it to accept region 1, 2 or 3, then put the disk back in. If you got the code wrong, your TV picture got corrupted and kept scrolling. Also, subtitles kept dropping off the screen during dialog. Needless to say I was very unhappy with the old Coby. I bought this Philips to replace it, and I am happy and amazed that I don't have to enter a code for a different disk region. It plays the DVD without losing the subtitles, exactly the way it was intended. It is reasonably priced, light-weight and easy to use. After playing a region 2 DVD, I tried a region 1 DVD (with subtitles), and it made the transition with no problems at all!!! Highly recommended if you have disks from different countries in different formats.
The only slight drawback is that the remote control does not have a button to open/eject the disk. But since you have to manually insert or remove the disk, it's not really important. You can shut the player off from the remote control; you just can't eject the disk.

[+] 8.0 Multi-region is hidden!
I bought two of these and was disappointed to find they were both Region 1 only...until I did this:

1. Make sure there is no disc in the player.
2. Turn power off and on again.
3. Open the tray.
4. On the remote, hit 9879 and then 0. This changes unit to Reion 0, meaning it'll play all regions.
5. Hit OK on the remote.
