Don't beat him kick his ass
This movie blew my mind. I was a little hesitant in buying, but figured what the heck I might as well it's like six bucks, That was one of the best decisions of my life. This movie has made it's way into my top ten for sure. It's so good the story the right amount of humor, drama, and action make it an instant classic in my book. It's like the hustler on steroids. If you have ever played pool, like Christopher Walken, or just in the need of a few laughs then this movie is for you.

Poolhall Junkies DVD Review
In my opinion, specially if you're a billiards player, this is a MUST for your movie collection. Acting all round is great, there are a couple iffy parts from the lesser known actors but for the most part the movie is put together great. Great plot lines, aesthetically pleasing throughout the whole movie, like I said, great acting, and of course an amazing cast. I'd most definitely recommend this movie!

Do the hustle, the hard way
The game is the vehicle by which the characters are developed and their selfish, greedy approach to life is demonstrated by the level of their desire to succeed; even at the cost of the future of a youthful key player. Walken is superb as the instigator of a big money game, however, his role is not the focus of the story. Great billiard shots and dialogue consistent with that found around most pool halls. Fun to watch, this movie will send you to your local pool hall.

Christopher Walken is the MAN!!!
This movie has every making of a "Cult Classic" and the stars to carry it on. Christopher Walken is a great actor and I enjoy him in everything he is in...including JOE DIRT.
Christopher Walken happens to be one of my favourites, and it was a nice surprise to see him in this film - but even without his charismatic acting, it would surely have been worth the time. Excellent showing of the game at it's brilliant best, it is also pretty funny, mostly believable (even tho a couple of times the hustling was made a bit too easy) and has more depth than Color of Money or the old one which had Minnesota Fats in it.. forgot the name of that one.
I'd double rate this film 9-10 for pool players, 7-9 for others.

Great "Guy" Movie
This is one of the best "Guy" movies out there. Definately not a "chick flick". It is entertaining, funny and just makes you feel good. It is well written and moves along at a good pace. Mars Calahan is excellent in this role and who doesn't love Christopher Walken. Go out on a limb and watch this movie. You'll love it.
just buy it, trust me it's cool! great story line, cool action ,funny too!
pluse it's got walken in it!
I purchased this for the second time!! I love this movie. It is a great movie--plot kinda lame, but full of clever one-liners and great billiard action! Christopher Walken is great in this movie. The primary star is also the writer and I believe he directed. There are a couple other big stars in this 'B' movie, such as Michael Rosenbaum-from Smallville, Chazz Palmenteri, Rick Schroeder, and Alison Eastwood- Clint Eastwood's daughter. Poolhall Junkies lives up to its name featuring a lot of billiard action. Love this movie! I get all my friends and even family to watch it and they all love it too!

Watch this movie and your life will improve. No, really.
If you dig the whole interaction of a well oiled machine-like crew of witty, bantering guys too young to yet be jaded but playing in grownup world then this is for you. I LOVED the back and forth in the dialogue between the buddies. And they're just the backdrop material. The conversations between everyone were just gutter poetry. Chazz and Christopher are right on the money with everything about themselves that I like to see in a movie. The lead character is in control even when he's OUT of control. There is a smooth flow to this flick that makes me think of the perfect Seven and Seven. Goes down easy and you're glad you ordered it. Had a nice seedy feel to it whenever the action was in the poolhalls. This film makes you wish you could hang out with these characters for just one night.
Has all the elements you'd expect for this type of movie and does them all really well, a good movie even if you've never picked up a pool stick

This movie rocks!!!
This is great movie about pool hustlers and scumbags. I liked it. I think you will like it. If you like this one, check out Double Down. There are a lot of the same characters, and actually that is the better of the two movies.
My son (age 18)asked for this movie for Christmas. It was a good movie with morales and the teenagers like it; I liked it as well.
I thought it was a good movie its got a little bit of every thing but the average person might not like it if they are not into pool. But if you like pool then you need to add this movie to your collection.

Junk in a Poolhall
Finally viewed this one after everyone hyped it. It was an okay movie, nothing exciting and certainly not worth the cult status it supposedly has. If you've seen one pool movie, you've seen this one. Mars Callahan should either get acting lessons or quit altogether because his character and the way he portrayed him was the most unbelieveable thing in this film.
"The Shooting Gallery" was a better film in all areas compared to this one in my opinion. Of course there is always the "Color of Money" and the unbeatable "The Hustler".

Excellent Cult Favorite....Highly Recommended !!!
The story of how this movie got made is almost as entertaining as the result. A talented pool player, Mars Callahan, wrote the script and sold it, much like Quentin Tarrantino and True Romance, but the script languished on the shelf for ten years. At this point, Callahan decided to take personal control and get the movie made. Somehow, he persuaded noted stars like Rod Steiger, Chazz Palminteri, Christopher Walken, etc. to appear in it, while he would assume the role of author, star, and director. How he accomplished this feat would be an excellent subject for a documentary film (like Overnight, but this time with a heroic principle character).
Mars Callahan has remarkable swagger and presence for a relative newcomer, especially in the company of such a distinguished cast. His personality and appearance remind me of a young Christopher Walken, and their scenes together are riveting.
Regardless of the history, the resulting movie is a bit uneven but overall very entertaining. The roles are cleverly written (possibly why noted actors were willing to play them) and very well portrayed. The pool shooting is first rate. Indeed, they accomplish the difficult task of making the pool games dramatic, original, and suspenseful. There is a lot of humor, very little violence (by today's standards), and no skin/sex. Instead, the movie relies on a generally excellent script and skillful characterization to thoroughly entertain rather than shock, nauseate, or deafen....an accomplishment that is becoming increasingly rare.
The weakness, in my opinion, is that the younger brother (Michael Rosenbaum) and his three pool-playing buddies are a little juvenile, with banter and antics reminiscent of American Graffiti or American Pie. This is out of character with the generally sophisticated overall tone, but was probably included to broaden the appeal of the movie to include a younger audience. It does not really damage the film, but simply dilutes it a bit....at least for me. A younger viewer may feel the opposite is true.
The bottom line: this is an amazing piece of work. Amazing for the fact that it ever got made....amazing for who appeared in it....and amazing for its overall quality. Even if you are not a great fan of pool, you will be knocked out by the superb dialog, plot, and performances of Mars, Rod, Christopher (an absolute genius), Chazz, and the gang. This is a gem !!!!

A surprisingly GOOD movie
This was a really great movie. There was a really good job of keeping the movie realistic (not far-fetched), while still being suspenseful and exciting. The way some of the pool shooting was captured/shot was really cool. The movie will make you want to go play pool after you watch it. It sort of has a bit of the "Rounders" movie feel to it with the storyline and all.
I gave "Poolhall Junkies" five stars because I love pool. I have spent $60 in one day playing (not gambling, just paying the hourly rate). So I can identify with the characters. If you're not that into pool, its probably just an alright film. I guess its exciting and whatnot, and some of the shots are just incredible no matter who you are, but its also cheesy at times. And playing for $100,000? I'm sorry, but that just doesn't happen. Oh well. Its still a favorite of mine.
Very entertaining. A good flick.

fun movie, nevermind the film students
i remember when i first watched this film...... it made me want to go down to my bar and shoot pool. the people who gave bad reviews for this film must be kids who just failed out their first "intro to film class" and are bitter that quentin tarantino, david lynch, or john waters wasn't mentioned, or people that take pool way to seriously and spend every waking moment at their pool hall. remember kids its just a game. regardless of all the technical aspects of the film, if you enjoy just chasing around that little black ball around for a night, check this movie out. you're not gonna see any crazy explosions or ultra violence, but its just entertaining. sometimes people get way too involved with stealing a movies credibility and ripping it to shreds only because the director should haved panned left when he panned right. its a fun movie, and if you get past trying to be "Johnny Film Expert", or "Johnny Pool Shot" you wont have regreted watching it.
The only thing worse than the dialog/acting is the shooting/hustling. This movie makes Whoopie's "Kiss Shot" look like academy award material.

Poolhall Junkies
This film was an excellent film, without question. Although there were a few shaky elements at times (the acting was faulty for only several scenes, but good for the rest), the movie still manages to maintain a perfect level of attention. The pacing is well set, the storyline is believable and well-guided, and the dialogue, while possibly not utterly sophisticated, was believable as well. Coming from a first time director (maybe second) who also wrote and starred in the film, it is an excellent effort that deserves attention. And to say that this film was a rip-off of "The Hustler" or "The Color of Money," as someone wrote earlier, is ridiculous. Just because it's about "pool" or "hustling" doesn't make it the same. Go to film school and learn something, or else stop writing reviews.

4 or 5 stars for this film? Some of you guys ought to leave the poolhall and hit the Cineplex every once in a while. The movie is not unwatchable, and that's about as far as I can go. Some of the characters are likable enough, and the pool scenes interesting enough, to salvage 2 stars for me. Of course the movie is derivative to an extreme, but that doesn't have to be the kiss of death. It's just not a well-made film. Some of the acting is abysmal. The editing...I gotta believe it's the editing...some scenes just end with no apparent reason for being there at all, no connection to the rest of the film. Chazz Palminteri...what the heck was he doing in this movie? I can't imagine what drew him to what had to be the most poorly-written character he's every played. Rick Schroeder wasn't abused that badly, mainly because they mercifully gave him little to do. Curious choice of roles for him as well. No mystery about Walken; he's made a career now out of having one memorable scene in otherwise forgettable movies. The pace of the film...wow...we leave key points in the film to hang out with the boys in the poolhool again. And then we get the obligatory Reservoir Dogs "walking in slow motion" shot of guys we don't care about going nowhere in particular. No shame at all. I learned from people here that the director / writer / star actually is an accomplished pool player. This was good to hear, because he's got no future in these other things.

Much Better Than Expected
I was truely impressed w/ Mars Callahan's protrayal and Christopher Walken, Chazz P. were amazing. I liked how the squized in a side plot romance, without being gushie about it. I am a Pool aficionado and I thought the movie was played out very well! I watched it twice the first night and have seen it 8 times since.
I let a friend of mine borrow the movie to get his take on it, and he loved it. My friend was a true Hustler, he made his living for 3 years hustling pool.
