Product Specifications

A few decades ago nearly every country singer had at least one--often more--gospel albums in their catalog. Today, aside from gospel veteran Amy Grant, who balances the sacred and secular, and Randy Travis, that concept has long faded. For Alan Jackson, however, treating the musical past as present has been a way of life, as it is with these 15 timeless hymns from his youth. Recorded with just two acoustic guitars and a piano, it was originally a private Christmas present to his mother. The spare instrumentation is surprisingly robust behind his flawless readings of "I'll Fly Away," "Softly and Tenderly," "How Great Thou Art," "Are You Washed in the Blood?," and "The Old Rugged Cross," all as beguilingly unpretentious as any of his country hits. Instead of an all-star duet, wife Denise and daughters Mattie and Ali join in on "'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus." In the end, what began as a private bequest becomes a moving, eloquent gift to Jackson's entire audience. --Rich Kienzle

[+] 10.0 Alan Jackson Gets It Right!
I do not need to add much more to what has already been said, except this: I am not a country music fan whatsoever, but I love this CD! Alan sings with a humility that is not always found on other hymn collections. Sometimes it seems as if other perfomers want to "show off" their vocal skills and so the message of the song takes second place. It's not that way with Alan. You can actually sing along with him and the words of the song take precedence. It is a keeper!

I already owned the CD, "Precious Memories". Then I ordered the DVD and you sent me another CD instead of what I ordered. That is why I returned the CD. I then ordered the DVD again.

[+] 10.0 Precious Memories
I saw the GAC(or CMT?) episode that had Alan singing these on. I love old time Southern gospel, and being a Baptist, I still get to hear and sing most of these songs at church. Too bad most churches these days think they have to have a rock concert at church to get people to come... sorry, don't want to go off on a rant. Anyway, I love this album.

[+] 10.0 A Great Find of Precious Memories!
This brings back the joy of those "old-time" religions, and I'm really enjoying this Alan Jackson CD. His voice is pure, clean, and clear and the CD is top quality.

I don't normally listen to much country-western, though I like it and have lots of it. It's just that I like all kinds of good music and take it in spells and rotations. This is just a sweet and happy breath of fresh air, and brings lots of joy to the soul. Thank you, Alan Jackson!

[+] 10.0 Alan Jackson Precious Memories
EXCELLENT!!! Plain, simple, genuine sounding hymns sung like the singer really means them from his heart. Wonderful both just to listen to and also to sing along with. (Excuse the preposition placement.) I listen to it over and over. Thanks Alan Jackson!

[+] 10.0 Great unique collection
Wonderful recordings of traditional gospel songs. Many of these were sung in my country Methodist church. Unaffected, straightforward presentation that preserves the origins of the songs. My understanding is that Jackson recorded it for his mother, without plans to release it to the public. The collection was shared, traded and took on a life of it's own and was finally released as an afterthought. This could explain the wonderful lack of "producing" on the album. Great purchase.

[+] 10.0 Super Jackson music
While we like Alan Jackson, we don't closely follow his releases. We didn't know this CD had been out until reading about it in his wife's book. It sounded so good, I ordered one for my dad, since he likes the old Gospel songs, and one for myself. We both loved it. I've since seen the DVD too, and it's just as good.

[+] 10.0 Heaven sent
My sweet mother of 92 was a piano teacher and played every one of these songs, we also sang them growing up in the Methodist Church. She is in the best nursing home in Wyoming, in Rawlins Care Pavilion, where someone gave this music to her. She also has Alzheimers, now the for the GIFT, she sings each and every song with Alan Jackson, his music is heaven sent, and she is loving every song, over and over again. Thank you Alan Jackson!!!

[+] 10.0 Best album ever
I do not even like country music, but I absolutely love this album. Words cannot do this CD justice; if you were raised with these songs, or love the LORD than you need this album. The beauty of this record is the purity of a man and his guitar, and the timeless classics are done so well. If you like these songs you will love this album and buy it for others as I have.

[+] 10.0 What more can be said
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the contemporary praise and worship songs which are so popular in many churches today. In my church (as in many others) we have a praise band consisting of electric guitar, drums, keyboard and brass. I like hearing them every week.
But sometimes I miss the simplicity of the traditional hymns we always sang when I was growing up, accompanied by piano and organ. That's what makes Alan Jackson's "Precious Memories" so wonderful. His voice sounds so rich and clear. Knowing that Alan and his wife believe what they are singing makes it even more special. (Denise Jackson and their daughters join Alan on one of the hymns.)
This CD is a treasure.

[+] 10.0 Such healing words that helped me after loosing my Mother
Alan Jackson's Precious Memories was a Godsend at my mother's memorial service. She had wanted How Great Thou Art played and we stopped and bought Alan's CD on the way. When I listened to the entire cd on the way home I cried, laughed, and started the very beginnings of healing.
I later wrote a song based on how it made me feel called
The Music Lifted Me

I stand with emotions
Streaming down my face
Gathering with the others
In this motherless place

This day seems unreal
Such a sad, lonely day
But I'll lift up my voice
To sing and to pray

Because it lifted me
The music lifted me
When I thought nothing ever could
It lifted me, yes, it lifted me
And oh, the sweetness is good

"How great thou art"
lifted me
helped raise me from my grief

"In the garden"
touched my soul
made me sure of my belief

"Blessed Assurance"
comforted me
oh yes, "glory divine"

"Softly and tenderly"
evoked such memories
with just one perfect line

"Standing on the promises"
made me smile
even through the tears I cry

"I'll fly away"
ah yes, I will
hallelujah by and by

Because it lifted me
The music lifted me
When I thought nothing ever could
It lifted me, yes, it lifted me
And oh, the sweetness is good

[+] 10.0 Most bueatiful and moving CD I own
Some of these are songs I have been singing since I could talk and others are newer favorites. I just listened to this CD for the first time and it moved me to tears. Alan Jackson sincerity and wonderful country voice bring these favorite hymns alive again and remind of us of the simplicity of the Christian faith. With a doubt the best album he has ever made.

This is one of my favorite CD's by Alan Jackson. I purchased it when it was first released, donated that copy to my church, and then bought myself another one. The old-time hymns are wonderful, and when the accompaniment is added to Alan's voice, it makes an outstanding product.

After the loss of my grandfather, these gentle songs paired with the strong smooth voice of Alan Jackson really helped me heal after the loss. [+] 10.0 Precious Memories
For several months, I had been looking for a cd with many of the old hymns that I grew hearing and singing in curhch. I opened up dozens of cds on Amazon to listen to samples and just didn't find the "right" one until I heard Alan Jackson's "Precious Memories" cd. WOW! I'm not even a country music fan, but he sang every song in such a way that sweet, precious memories just filled my heart with joy. Each selection was done so simply and beautifully. I love it! slb

[+] 10.0 You will love this album
This album by Alan Jackson is one of the most inspirational ones that I've ever purchased. The way Alan sings these classic hymns is timeless and touching. I've loved this album so much that I obtained copies for friends at church who have all said that I had no idea of how much they loved this album.

One thing that I will definately recommend to readers of this review- you MUST buy the companion DVD in which Alan Jackson performs these songs live at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. The DVD includes 2 songs that weren't shown on the CMT presentation. Alan really gets the joint jumping during the renditions of "Are You Washed in the Blood/I'll Fly Away" The DVD is available through this website. Please get it!

[+] 4.0 Get Randy Travis instead
Not bad, but I still thought a lot of it was over-instrumentalized and some of the timing/tempo was awkward (too slow and/or had lost the rhythm). Randy Travis' _Worship & Faith_ is less melodramatic and easier to sing with.

[+] 10.0 Wonderful
This is the first CD that I have purchased of Alan Jackson. I love country/bluegrass/gospel music.

This is an exceptional CD. It offers a great selection of songs which are sung superbly with sincere warmth. It is one of those Cd's that you can listen to while you are relaxing or just doing your housework.

Please Alan, give us some more gospel recordings like this soon.

[+] 10.0 Very well done
After growing up in church and serving as church pianist for over 20 years, I feel the need to express my disappointment that the hymns are not sung very much nowadays. Today's church song leaders and choir directors prefer to have their congregations sing praise and worship choruses instead of traditional hymns from the hymn book. I'm not even sure that most young people have even heard many, if any, hymns. Worse, many people who do sing hymns don't sing them the way they're traditionally supposed to be sung. I was very pleased, therefore, when Alan Jackson recorded this CD. I saw his concert on TV, and immediately thereafter ordered the CD. Alan Jackson sings the hymns the way they were sung in church when I was growing up... the way they're supposed to be sung. If you ask me, this is worship at its best.
