Diana does it again with her saultry vocals and great music background. Worth listening to over and over again.

[+] 2.0 Horrid
Breathless and pitchy. Trying way too hard. It sounds like the band has to hang around for her to get it even close to together. I wouldn't mind having a cd of the band without Diana however.

I love it and highly recommend that you purchase the cd. Diane Krall is a very smooth songstress and sets the stage for a dynamic expereince.

[+] 10.0 Best ever by Diana
This CD is one you will never stop playing. The DVD has a beautiful final track with Diana's husband Elvis Costello and Elton John joining her. You can see what a great family life she has. Diana often mentions how she misses her husband when she is performing overseas on one of her international DVDs. A happy home life has contributed to Diana's maturity as an artist. This CD is just perfection.

[+] 6.0 Quiet Nights Is Not Up To Krall's High Standards
I have been a fan of Diana Krall since When I Look In Your Eyes (see my review), and I also really liked The Look Of Love and From This Moment On. On these past recordings I thought that she played and sang with a rich emotional depth that just doesn't seem to be there on Quiet Nights. Also on most tracks her voice seems thin, strained, and airy compared to past recordings. Krall also uses a different vocal delivery on songs such as "Walk On By" where the rhythm and pitch just don't sound like her. I've also really enjoyed her piano playing too, but it comes off sounding trite on "So Nice". The opening of the song sounds more like the theme to Three's Company than something a classy jazz musician would record.

The silver lining on Quite Nights is the final four songs that come closest to traditional Krall. I found it odd that likely the best song on the CD "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" is listed as a bonus track. While her vocals don't quite hit the bar that she set on previous recordings, her emotion seems more natural.

I hope that Quiet Nights is a blip rather than a trend for Diana Krall. I am anxious for her next CD to see if she returns to form. For Quiet Nights I would recommend picking and choosing songs to download rather than buying the whole thing.

[+] 8.0 Much like her Look of Love
I'm not a Jazz purists but I know what I like. When Look of Love album came out I loved the smooth Brazilian touch to many of the selections like 'Dancing in the Dark' and 'I'll remember you'. I wished then that there were more. I got my wish in this one. If her voice was any smoother and sexier she would have to be lying down.

[+] 4.0 Love Diana Krall, disappointed at her voice this time
Diana Krall has given us so many wonderful moments and she deserves to be as popular and prominent as she is.
This CD was a real surprise. Her voice sounded harsh, lacking the smooth subtlety and sensuality of her former
work. I guess it is just her age, but wow, after a while I couldn't listen, it almost made me weep. Some performers
manage to hang onto their youthful voice, others transform their offerings to suit their mature voice. Krall
must realize that time is robbing something sweet and wonderful from her instrument. She can surely adjust
and I look forward to taking a chance on her next CD. I had to give this one away to a friend who doesn't
seem to notice or care about the difference. I hope to be pleasantly surprised next time.

[+] 2.0 Great cover, but Poor Performance
I own most of Diana's CDs and bought this one on an impulse (great pic). However, what a disappointment! I couldn't believe her breathy singing style that was a complete turn-off. And, her piano playing lacked any excitement or drive. I find her best with her small group. She was terrific at Red Butte Garden in SLC last summer and it was clear she hadn't lost any of her earlier vibrancy. Time to go back to the jazz roots.

[+] 10.0 Soft and Excellent
Is something wrong with me? Why do so many reviewers dislike this album? I don't care for the majority of Ms. Krall's previous work but decided to give her new alubm a chance, and was immediately delighted. So soft, so relaxing - so soothing that I fell into a delicious mid-afternoon nap midway through the first time I heard it. It's lush without being smothering and beautiful without being pretentious, and has become one of my favorite albums. Besides the cover, I can't find much not to like.

[+] 8.0 Old Fan
For the most part, I like this CD. She seems to be returnng to her "roots." For a while there her husband, who became her manager/director/whatever, had her doing some strange things and I didn't like those releases. But now on this CD she is back to her smooth jazz genre, music I can enjoy driving the highway as well as at home "kicking back."

[+] 10.0 Beautiful
Diana has this low sexy voice and sings some of the romantic love songs I remember so well from my youth. A dramatic departure from the cacophony of "modern" music.
And for jazz aficionados, piano is the primary instrument played like you remember.

[+] 4.0 Another Diana Krall CD
I've been a Diana Krall fan for a long time. And I'm sorry to say this is not her best effort. Lots of lush strings. Interesting songs. But it just falls short of past efforts. Sorry.

[+] 4.0 Recipe falls a bit flat
This is one of those records that looks great on paper: song selection, orchestration, appealing singer. What's not to love. It's the singing, really. Diana sounds slurry and indistinct, coy and phony at times.

I recommend "Bossa Nova Stories" by Elaine Elias instead. Ms. Elias doesn't have a "belt 'em out" voice either, but does have an actual feel for the material that completely eludes Diana.

[+] 4.0 Diana krall-Quiet Nights
If Diana Krall's "Look Of Love" album is the standard of excellence, then this new album falls short as her vocal delivery on the tunes are very far off from her previous albums.

[+] 8.0 More of the mellow /torchie stuff
Love the way Krall does the soft, oldie love songs and this is more of the same. Full instramentation. Good selections - but a bit a copy cat of first hit. She is just as good/better on piano, I would buy two of her CD's if she did only mellow Jazz piano. Worth it. Buy it and relax.

[+] 10.0 Quiet Nights / Diana Krall
As my wife and I feel that Diana Krall is one of our favorite artists, the CD is great.
I was very disappointed, however, that the CD case was cracked when the product arrived, as this CD was a birthday gift for my wife.
I don't know whether the fault lies with the mail service or the packers at Amazon.

Diana Krall vocals are just stunning

While I enjoy all these songs "how can you mend a broken heart" is just stunning!

I often will play this album while at work. It blends smootly into the background providing a audible place to focus other than all the noise of cubbie land.

[+] 10.0 Romantic, Sultry & Perfect
An instant favorite album! If you liked The Look of Love, you'll love this. The string arrangements are more of the gorgeous and lush Claus Ogerman magic. Everything he touches becomes transcendent and ethereal. I don't care how many times I've heard these numbers growing up, he makes them anew. Very romantic, mellow and sultry. Diana's voice is intimate and sexy, rraarrrr! I've read the few critical reviews on Amazon and categorically disagree with each point made. It's easy for me to ignore their diatribe. Suffice to say everyone is different. If Diana and Claus teamed up to produced 20 albums like this, I'd order them unheard. Honest, it's that good!

[+] 10.0 It's entitled "Quiet Nights" for a reason
On the bonus features from the DVD "Live in Rio," Diana describes this CD as a love letter. She expresses that on this CD. It's a love letter from the other artists and arranger, producer, and everyone else involved too. The lush, lazy, quiet spaces in this music resonate with me and my wife. If you're looking for high energy bop you need to look elsewhere. This CD is entitled "Quiet Nights" for a reason. Give it a chance--it grows on you with multiple listenings. It helps if you listen when in a quiet mood.

I met Diana Krall in person WOW! after the, Ann Arbor, Hill Aud.show 6/26/09. She was very sweet & kind, had I listened to her new CD Quit Nights before hand I surely would have ask for a hug :)

At first the songs seemed a little to slow and quit but that all changed as I replayed & replayed "Quit Nights" hearing more and more fine details only Diana can bring to the music.

You will love this CD, I give it a 100%........... she is pure magic.....what a gift to the arts! what a gift to the world!

I am amazed at the others that do not like this album. I feel like we are not reviewing the same album. These reviews prompted me to write mine. It is super album, and she has shown me another side of her singing talent. The songs are a wonderful selection that brings out her true talents. I hope she does more. She makes these songs feel!! Her renditions are both moving and touching. I do not know what others were looking for but to me all I can say is WOW!!!! If you like Diane then " DONT walk on by "

[+] 2.0 Diana Krall should sing standard of jazz
Diana Krall is a good artist and performer, but the songs she is more capable to sing are jazz standard, as she does in her best albums ("The look of love", "When I look in your eyes" and "All for you"); bossa nova standards have nothing to do with her music and with anything she has done in the past.
Forget this album.

[+] 4.0 Quiet NIghts Quite a Disappointment
As a longtime fan of Diana Krall, I am always excited when one of her new albums is released. I am sad to say that my enthusiasm was not rewarded. To be honest, I feel that this album is lacking in every respect, from programming to production to performance. I hope that future albums will have the electric vitality of albums that preceded "Quiet Nights".

[+] 2.0 Amazing how things change
After reading some of the reviews, I couldn't believe what I was reading! At first thought they must not know what they are talking about, as soon as I listen to this CD (samples), I was surprised! I thought what a bad CD, I thought I'd buy it, but I've changed my mind. I never thought I'd stop liking Diana Krall, but this CD is very boring, it does not excite me, I felt I was listening to Kenny G,. Diana should've thougnt twice about it before doing it. It lacks a lot, no originallity, nothing great or worth getting, I'd have to skip this one, hopefully she comes up with something better next time.
Reviewer [A30JYPUDZ0JGP2] | Date [July 27, 2009]
[+] 4.0 Disappointment and surprize
This is a disappointing effort from Diana Krall. The selection of songs is good, but something's amiss with her voice. It's hard to believe that she would have recorded a CD with a cold or laryngitis, but that's how it sounds. Her voice is strained, listless, and at times off key. Hopefully this is a temporary condition.
Reviewer [AC0EYJRN23T2D] | Date [July 27, 2009]
[+] 4.0 Over Orchestration
On this effort, Diana Krall was lead astray by her arranger, Claus Oberman. Mr. Oberman's excessive orchestration weighs down every song on this album. The long droning violin lines, in an attempt to add a 1940ish romantic embellishment, get heavily in the way and render each bossa nova or moderately up tempo classic into a almost tearful dirge. With a nod to the orchestration, Diana tries to deliver a more throaty sultry attack to each vocal but it just doesn't work. Verve should issue a recall on this disc, destroy every copy, and reissue it with Ms. Krall backed only by her usual drums, guitar, and bass.

[+] 8.0 More Piano Chops With The Beat Please
I am a fan of Diana, but I especially like her earlier releases. Once I heard her piano chops on Stepping Out, there was no turning back. What I wish for now is to bring back more of those chops to her CD output.
On this album though, I was mesmerized by her subtle styling on the You're My Thrill track. There, the orchestra added the perfect mood to emotion being put forth. Sometimes, the orchestra gets in the way when used for other songs she does.

[+] 4.0 Worst of her Cd's
I am a Diana Krall fan. I own 9 of her CD's and her "Live in Paris" DVD. Her playing (piano) is great. Usually, her singing is ok, not bad, not great. However, on this CD she doesn't sing. She just whispers the lyrics. The best one word evaluation of her non-singing on this CD is bland. The music is low key (as in slow and unenergetic) and with the lack of any actual singing, there is little to praise on the whole CD. Like I said, I normally enjoy Diana Krall, but I recommend passing on this CD.

Not sure whether she is just trying to do something different but, if so, she has gone in the wrong direction. Perhaps she thought this was safe and, just maybe, she was was right, but judging by the reviews on this site; not.

Bland, uninspiring and certainly not what we have become used to. "Walk on by" and "Ipanema" are particularly insipid.

Diasappointing.

[+] 2.0 If She Looked Like Susan Boyle...
If Diana Krall looked like Susan Boyle instead of Diana Krall, she might be making a comfortable living as a competent jazz pianist, because she really can play. She wouldn't be rated as a great singer, because in truth, she can barely sing. Her signature phrasing, halting and broken, speaks (literally) of a person who can't sustain a note for more than a second and who has a vocal range of maybe an octave. Fortunately she's a smoky alto rather than a strident soprano, with a sexy timbre to her voice that substitutes for musicality. And playing the cleavage card has always been a smart move in show business. Hence, she's a star.

Before I continue, let me clarify my feelings about Susan Boyle. Now, there's a singer or, at least, a singer with potential, a woman with a real voice. Her average-Jane looks and powerful pipes may, and hopefully will, impress me one day in a manner that Diana Krall never could, given Krall's extremely limited vocal skills.

Usually Amazon fans are fairly unified in their opinion of a CD, but this CD is notable for the extremely wide range of opinions about it. The die-hards love it because they love whatever Krall does. Other Krall fans are puzzled by what they correctly perceive to be a lackluster, dull, insipid recording. Still others scratch their heads trying to figure out what the heck people see in Diana Krall. I gave this recording a chance because I fall in that last category. Never one to be influenced by a good PR campaign, I nonetheless felt that perhaps I've been too hard on Krall. Alas, Quiet Nights is so quiet as to be comatose. Do not mistake affectless, flat, dry non-interpretation for intensity. The Empress has no clothes, my friends. Oh wait, she does. It's a low-cut black dress, and a fan is staring down the bodice right now, listening to the echo of his own breathing and mistaking it for music.

[+] 6.0 Diana, Diana, Diana... where have you gone, Diana? PLEASE come back! :(
First off, the positive. The arrangements here are outstanding. Definitely her musical best since The Look of Love. I've pretty much loved anything she has done. Whether it be the jazzy, swingy feel of From This Moment On, to the Jazz-Rock feel of The Girl In The Other Room, or even the sultry feel of Love Songs, she is great.

Now like I said, this is musically her best. I wish I could say the same about her vocals though.

Either:

1. She recorded this album when she had an extremely sore throat
2. She hardly got any sleep while recording this album
3. She's just plain bored of making music

Because here, her voice sounds tired and strained. She REALLY let it all out on From this Moment On, hell, she even scatted. But here, she sings in that breathy, bored style every pop singer sings in nowadays.

Several songs here are missed opportunites. The Boy From Ipanema (pretty much the reverse version of The Girl from Ipanema") sounds BO-RING due to her bored voice. "Walk On By"... huh. The title is quite apt, because it describes what I feel like doing when that song comes on. Have you heard the chorus? She's REALLY straining her voice here. Had she just sung it out like on previous efforts, maybe it wouldn't have been so unbearable. Speaking of unbearable, Song #7... her attempt at singing an entire song in Portugese is terrible. My sister walked by my room and asked "Why is she singing in random gibberish?". Can't blame her, the way Krall constantly mispronounces words it sounds like gibberish (trust me, I used to go to school with this one Brazillian guy, and when he spoke Portugese it sounded great and really natural). And "I've Grown Accustomed To His Face"... ugh. "Aiiive groan accustemed to hes feeeece!"

What a disappointing outing. Such a good opportunity wasted here. I really hope next album she sings way better. As for the orchestration and what have you, well really, I wouldn't mind if she took a similar direction next time because it sounds FANTASTIC here.

[+] 6.0 Bossa Nova Bust
I pre-ordered this because I like Diana Krall's husky smooth jazz style and the fact that the playlist fesatured a lot of bossa nova classics from the 60's that have been neglected except for "The Girl from Ipanema." The arrangements all sound alike, the tempos all sound alike and the only way I can stand to listen to this disc is one cut at a time. Diana used to sizzle and pop - not here.

[+] 6.0 Here we go again
I love Diana Krall, I have all her albums and follow her career because I enjoy her music. This is a 'pleasant' album, and that is probably why I am only giving it 3 stars. She seems to really favour the orchestrated medium, and while that is no by any means a criticism, it has become a strong and recurring theme.

For me personally, I LONG to see a return to a more simple set-up like was had on "The Girl in the Other Room" (my fav) or her early albums. I just feel as though there is nothing overly new or exciting offered by this album (many of her others explore bossa and latin themes). However its still a nice listen and worthy of having on your shelf. I would encourage her to again explore her own writitng as on said fav album!!

[+] 8.0 Mr. Ogermann reigns
I have been a Claus Ogermann fan for many years and his arrangements and reharmonizations are incredibly beautiful, intense and serene. I have a sense that Jobim would have loved the subtle changes and interlude of "Corcovado", a song I played for years and could not stand listening anymore. Mr. Ogermann made me embrace this song again. I have almost all of his own works (a few I can't find) as well as some Diana Krall's recordings. The serenity and overall tempo of this work is not in the way of its eloquence and depth. If you are looking for Swing and adrenaline you will be disappointed. I don't care much about Diana Krall, but I thank her for serving Mr. Ogermann's art.

[+] 4.0 The Magic Is Gone
I am (was?) a big fan but what a disappointment this album is. It sounds like she is grudgingly going through the motions. Let's hope this album is a momentary blip in her otherwise stellar career and that she regains her footing in her next outing.

[+] 4.0 Couldn't Say It Better Myself
"It's a tough genre to pull off - to give it that cool, breezy, laid-back, I-wish-I-had-another-Mojito kind of feeling. If done well, the listener is transported to a gorgeous beach with beautiful women and cool mist of ocean spray, spawned by the hip grooves of quiet sophistication. If done poorly, the listener is pushed headfirst into the nearest elevator. I'm still punching the numbers looking for a more exciting floor . . .uh . . . I mean tune. Krall no longer seems to revel in the music. Instead, I get a sense she fell in line behind Tony LiPuma and headed to the studio with a few chords and one-too-many string programs."

I was going to do my own review until I read this one. Dead on. I love Diana Krall, but this effort is just uninspired, to say the least.
