[+] 6.0 great picture, poor performance
I have owned 4 portable dvd players, and this was the second one I owned. I ended up giving it away because I was so frustrated at its inability to play DVD's. It was hit or miss. Sometimes it played, but mostly it just spun and spun and spun.

But what I really miss about it, now that I have owned two replacements, is that of all the portable DVD players I've owned, this one had by far the best picture quality. I really miss that. I miss it enough to be willing to buy another one and risk its poor performance again. I also liked the super long battery life and light weight. The Sony FX810 I'm currently using advertises longer battery life, (but it's only 3 hours compared to Samsung's 4+ hours), has poorer resolution, and is much heavier. I use it with headphones, so I have no opinion on sound quality.

Samsung, if you're reading this, please improve the quality of your product to read DVD's better, but keep the great picture and battery, (plus improve the sound), and you will have the best product out there.

[+] 2.0 Portable unless you move it, #2
I bought the Samsung L70 player from Fry's, I think it was about $180, much pricier than other 7" players at the time. But... the clerk talked us into it, claiming that the resolution was better than others. I now have a feeling that he just wanted a higher commission.

It worked a few times, then kept resetting when moved. I agree with the other review titled "Portable unless you move it" -- essentially that's the truth. By the time I went back to Fry's it was outside of the exchange period; I called Samsung, but neglected to ship it back before the warranty expired. Did I already mention that the player was gently used a few times (maybe 4?).

I guess I should have learned my lesson the previous year, when a Samsung 8mm video camera broke after three months. No more Samsung products for my family.

[+] 4.0 Increasingly frustrating
This is our second portable DVD player. We purchased a "cheap" one first and had problems you'd expect from a cheap one so we then exchanged it for this model on the salesperson's suggestion.

At first all seemed great, but as we used it for the second and third times, issues others have mentioned - the audio is very poor and if it even gets slightly jarred the playback stops - started manifesting themselves.

Not only that, but the laser is so sensitive that if there is even the smallest scratch on the disc, the whole thing locks up and you have to power down and try to find your scene again.

We bought this machine to enterain my son on car trips and it has completely and utterly failed us in this objective. If we can't play any of his DVDs because even if the DVD is completely free of even the tiniest scratch, and we were able to have a completely smooth car ride, and even then, if it can't then be heard, what's the use of it? It's an expensive door stop.

[+] 8.0 Pleasently surprised
I've had this player for over a year now and it's still operating great, especially for the amount of used and traveling it does.
I have found it convienent enough to slide into the back of my purse and bring to resturants or doctor's appointments for my 2 year old to entertain herself with. For that alone it's been invaluable.
She has also thrown it on the floor a few times with a hard enough impact to knock the battery right off. But surprisingly, it still works fine.
We use it almost daily and I have not noticed any problems with duribility (hinges, buttons ect).
The only reason why I did not give it five stars is because it is very frustrating in the car because it stop playing for the most random movements. I wish I had spent the extra $100 for the non-skip version, but at the time, this seemed expensive enough.
The battery lasts a long time, probably 4 hours. It outlasts my laptop! It also plays a couple of DVDs that my laptop will not, go figure.
I am glad I bought it.

Update: I have now owned it for almost 2 years now. I have a feeling that it might crap out soon. It gives me error messages every now and then and sometimes simply refuses a disc. It's had a great run though! Especially since we use it for our toddler at every meal and in addition to that we use it for car ride, resturants, etc. It has had A LOT of use.

I think this time around I'm going to get one with a smaller screen just to make it more portable and I will definitly get one with anti-skip! No doubt about that!

This Samsung Player exceeded my expectations really. I loved the crystal-clear picture and the sharp sound. It also looks very elegant with the stainless surface and the black cover. It's definitely worth the money.

[+] 2.0 Samsung DVD-L75 Portable DVD Player
Buyer Beware! This portable DVD player was purchased as a present with the purpose of using it while flying on long trips, unfortunately you cannot hear it even with good headphones over the plane noise. I took it to Best Buy today to see if there is something wrong with the unit. The salesman in the tv/dvd department was not surprised by my complaint. He said the Samsungs have a low audio output compared to other models. He suggested I ask the Geek Squad in the front of the store to get their opinion. The person I spoke with was very helpful and said this appears to be a problem with the Samsung portable DVD players from information he had found on the internet. I ended up buying a booster for $34.00. When I got home, I called Samsung and that was a waste of time. Samsung tried to tell me all the manufacturers are having this problem with the portable DVD players and basically they do not care and will do nothing to insure customer satisfaction. I asked him if Samsung would reimburse me the $34.00 I spent on a booster since their system's sound is inadequate. I was told not to waste my time. So much for customer service. I will never purchase a Samsung product ever again and advise other consumers to do the same.

[+] 4.0 Very low output !!!
I have a DVD-L75 which is exactly the same as L70 except it comes with a 4.2 hr extended battery instead of the 2.5 hr battery that comes with this model.

PROS:
Sleek & lightweight

CONS:
(1) VERY low sound output (in headphones as well as in-built speakers)
(2) Does not play other file formats such as MPEG, AVI etc..

I had a poloroid DVD player before this, it played practically any file that was burnt onto a disc. And had an amazing sound output.

[+] 2.0 I can't hear you!
Sound output is terrible, you can't hear it in a car or airplane(with high quality, noise cancelling earphones). When I called customer service they told me it was not intended for use in a car or airplane. Picture is very good, but I have heard better sound from much cheaper players. Don't waste your money.

[+] 8.0 Alright
Length of Usage: approx 5 months, minimum 1hr/day, 5days/wk

Pros: - Extremely light and portable even with battery
- LCD great to side viewing for family, adequate screen size
- Good color quality, sound quality depends on headphones (I use Coby CV-110, cheap and works well)
- Bettery length good for commutes

Cons: - Fastforward and rewind, difficult to figure out.

[+] 2.0 Portable unless you move it
I purchased the DVD-L75 from BestBuy to entertain my young children on long automobile and airplane trips. But from the moment I first powered it up, I noticed a major flaw: the slightest bit of movement would cause the unit to freeze-up, requiring a complete power cycling to restore it. If the unit is placed on a sturdy surface such as a table or desk it worked fine, but if I so much as placed it on my lap while laying in bed, the motion of my breathing would cause it to crash.

And my main usage for this unit, inside an automobile, was completely futile. I'd start up a movie, my kids would be getting interested in it, and then it would lock up. I'd have to restart the unit, go through the menus to get back to where we left off, and then within five minutes it would be frozen again. I tried everything to work around this sensitivity to vibration, even awkwardly holding it in the outstretched palm of one hand while driving with the other, but that would only extend the freeze interval to about 10 minutes.

I had a very bad experience with Samsung customer service. 5 weeks ago I sent the unit in for repair after explaining the problem. 11 days later they promptly returned it to me with no action taken - saying that they couldn't find a problem. But within 20 minutes of starting the unit up and using it in my home, it again froze up as I moved it from one table to another. So I immediately got back on the phone with customer service and they instructed me to send it back in, and if they could not find the problem this time, they would replace the unit. I was concerned about this since I was leaving on vacation in 3 weeks and did not want to face a 6-hour airplane ride with two kids and no entertainment. They assured me they would expedite the process and get me a workable unit in time. The unit went out the same day and two days later I received a call from the technician asking me to clarify the problem. In theory he should have tested the unit that day, and either repaired it or sent out a replacement unit the next. Instead, 8 working days went by where nothing happened, despite my daily phone calls inquiring about status. When finally I was a week away from vacation I got insistent that they do something and a customer service agent assured me the replacement unit would be shipped that day and to call later for a tracking number. The next day no tracking number was available, so I gave them another day. The next day no tracking number was available but they assured me it would be shipped momentarily. Later that day I called back and spoke with a different customer service agent who gave me a completely different story: the REQUEST for a replacement had been submitted to a queue, and would take over a week to be reviewed and processed. Then, if approved, the order would go into a queue in shipping where it would take another week to be processed, and finally it would be shipped via UPS ground. So the whole process was going to take over two weeks and it was unlikely I would receive the new unit until AFTER I retured from vacation. After an hour on the phone with customer service trying to find a satisfactory solution, they basically told me I'm screwed.

I don't know whether the replacement unit will work or not, but so far the $220 I spent on this unit has in no way provided the solution of entertaining my children on long trips.

But if like watching DVD movies on a 7" screen in a stationary environment like your living room, this unit will be just fine.

[+] 10.0 A great, portable DVD player
I really liked this player!

It has many good features and I've only one minor negative comment...let me elaborate.

The pros;

1.)light weight and small (but appears to be solidly built); easily portable for travel.

2.)comes with car plug adapter so it can be used in your vehicle.

3.)has 2 ports so you have the option of using one port for headphones with the main speaker on, or the second port for use with the main speakers muted. (Really useful in the car or motel room when you want to watch or listen to something while someone else uses the radio or tv)

4.)comes with an a/v connecter cord so you can hook this unit up to a TV set.

5.)LCD image is very clear...screen angle is adjustable (by tilting forward or back) to give the best picture.

6.)There is a menu button that gives you control over such things as type of stereo output, subtitles and the ability to go directly to any cut on the DVD.

7.)It also comes with a fully functioning remote.

8.)Comes with a lithium rechargable battery that reportedly will give you about 2-3 hours of use.

The con; (singular)

The only negative point I've come across with this unit is the fast forward or rewind function (using the >> keys); the key is small and must be held down it order to fast forward/rewind, making it easy to misjudge how far forward or back you wish to go. However, that being said, this is only a small annoyance in a otherwise well made product.

All in all, a compact, portable DVD player and, as with most Samsung products I've purchased before, a well built, reliable piece of electronics.

[+] 8.0 Good value but speakers need some work
I bought this player to entertain our young family on long trips. I tried watching a movie while driving on a noisy road while my husband listened to the car stereo. I ended up turning it off because it was inaudible with cheap headphones. I found a pair of noise canceling head phones and haven't had a chance to try those out yet.

Besides the poor sound quality speakers, this has been a great machine for the price. I've had no problems. It played two childrens movies and started on a third before the battery died.

The remote control is handy when you are in the car. For such an inexpensive player, it came with quite a few accessories such as the car adaptor.

It cost slightly more than the other players that I was looking at-in the $100-130 range. I bought a Polaroid brand with more accessories at a club store and ended up returning it immediately because it was defective. I'm glad I waited for this player to go on sale for about $135. Plus I won't be too upset when the young children drop it.

[+] 4.0 Unhappy and frustrated
I asked a co-worked what was a good DVD to purchase. He recommended the DVD L-70. I purchased this DVD player January 18th from Circuit City. Every movie I watched, the picture would freeze up and then go black and I had to go thru scene select to try to get back to the place where it had left off. Also the sound was not loud enough if there was other noise in the background. I took this DVD player back to circuit city and they exchanged it for another one. Exact same model. This is doing a similar problem. When you watch the movie, after a time, the picture starts to wiggle and then you see different colors going across the screen. If you hit the lid of the player a little, it sometimes stops and continues with the movie but who wants to do this. Also this ones sound isn't very loud. I believe I have until Feb 18 to return this one and get my money back. If this is possible, this is what I am going to do but then I'll be in the market for a new player. I am now leaning toward Target's polariod.

[+] 4.0 Unsatifactory Performance
Positives: Nice screen, very good picture. Nice control layout. Good information package.
Negatives: Poor audio control. The volume is nowhere near enough to use in a traveling vehicle (car, bus, train, airplane, etc.)even with headphones or ear buds. However, the biggest problem is the unexpected power shutdown that can occur anytime in any condition. I found the longest I could play a movie continuously with the a/c adapter attached was 70 minutes and average was about 30. With the battery alone powering the unit it would go 50 minutes max and average 20 and with the car adapter it would go 45 max and 15 average. Leaving it on a table undisturbed or holding it made no difference. I replaced this with another unit for the same cost that works much better although the video isn't as sharp.

I got the Samsung DVD-L75 for Christmas this year, and I love it! I don't understand what people are saying about the sound being too quiet. The sound is fine! Maybe it could be a little louder but I have had no trouble hearing it. The picture is amazing and the player is light and portable. I also love how they include the car adapter as well as the regular power adapter. The remote is also very cool. It is small and easy to carry with the player. It was also nice to see that when I hooked my player up to my TV, I could use it just like a normal DVD player. Overall, this product is AMAZING!

[+] 6.0 really enjoying it!!
I just bought the Samsung DVD-L70 this week at Best Buy in Canada. I had decided to get this player over the Toshiba SDP16000 because in the store this screen quality looked much better.

Airplane Use: The dvd player is really good for airplanes. I shared it with my brother sitting next to me and he had no problem seeing the screen. It views really well during day flights and night flights in terms of the sun reflection but of course its best visually in the dark. It didn't skip at all in any plane and at one flight we were in a little express plane which is more turbulant because of size. It's also good when you are waiting in the terminal and want to watch because they usually have plugs around and you can just plug it in to watch and save battery life. The only problem I was a little frustrated with was that the volume is hard to hear in the plane. But honestly what do you expect when the engines of the plane are super loud in the first place? The noise reducing headphones didn't work so well so I'm going to return them. However, I found that using the ipod headphones that go right into your ears work better. Also I put on the subtitles so I could catch some dialogue in case I missed it. I don't have a problem doing that though I'm sure some people might. All and all it is very good in the plane you just might want to put forward some extra money and get really good headphones with volume adjusters on them.

Car Use: The dvd player is really good in the car. It didn't skip at all with the bumps and jolts of highway driving. The car adapter is a great function also. The volume is much easier to hear in the car than in the airplane. The only problems are that if you get a bit nausiated in the car watching then obviously don't watch in the car cuz you're focusing on it the whole time on your lap. What I suggest is getting one of those cases that it can hang from on the seat in front of you so you don't have to hold anything.

Regular Use: When using the dvd player as normal in a quiet room hearing it is not a problem at all. So far with all the movies i've played on it (most of them being dvd-r) it only had a problem skipping with one of them. I didn't mind because i think it is just a problem with the dvd itself.

Battery Life: The player on full volume with stopping, pausing, rewinding etc, lasts for about a movie and a half. I was able to get through The Bourne Idendity (which is fairly long) and half of One Hour Photo before it shut off. The only thing that is a bit frustrating is how when it's plugged in you can't charge it while you're watching a movie, the power has to be shut off. Over all i'd say it lasts for about 2.5-3 hrs on battery with use of features. If you leave the buttons alone I'm sure it'll last a bit longer.

Amenities: I really like the two headphone jacks. It's really benifitial for use in the airplane or in general. The screen quality is very sharp and good from most angles. I find the remote a little pointless becuase you're sitting right infront of it anyway and are most likely going to use the touch buttons. The buttons can get a little annoying because the fastforward/rewind buttons are not the first funtion if you press >> that first then it skips to the next chapter so in order to ff you have to hold it down so you might end up skipping your scene by accident. It's not that bad though you get used to the right ammount of pressure that's needed. The menu/title buttons are also easy to use and figure out. The quality of the text on the screen for subtitles is also easy to read.

All and all it's a great player to have with minimal faults. I recommend it to everyone since it's cheaper than most other players and comes attached with the reputable samsung name.

[+] 4.0 Great picture, but can't hear it!
I bought the newer DVD-L75 at Best Buy for use on airplanes (I travel a lot). I took it with me on a trip to Kansas City but could hardly ear the audio when in flight, even through my amplified, noise-cancelling headphones. With the volume control turned all the way up, the sound level through headphones is acceptable in a quiet room, but not in a moving car or airplane.

Even in a crowded airport terminal the sound is too low to hear and understand voices reliably. I tried several different headphones, all had similar results.

The picture quality is great, even though no contrast or brightness controls are provided, and I'd keep the player if only I could hear it! Samsung really missed the boat on this product--it's simply unacceptable for use while traveling.

[+] 2.0 Completely Unacceptable
I purchased the Samsung DVD-L75 at Best Buy, along with a 2 year extended warranty (always a good idea with portable DVD players.) We purchased it for use on long car trips and the first time we used it, the player stopped and restarted itself from the beginning of the movie. My children complained after the 2nd or 3rd time it did this but I assumed it was due to my son jostling it or even from it getting overheated since he held it on his lap. A month later on our next car trip, it did it again. This time we tested it on a stable surface at home and it did it again. I took it back to Best Buy and they sent it off to be serviced (it was after the 30 day return period), but of course found nothing wrong with it after having it for 4 weeks. We took it out to the parking lot to test it and 5 minutes into the movie, it stopped and restarted itself. I took it back into the store and since they didn't actually see it happen, they refused to do anything about it. I will try again tomorrow to take it back and get some sort of resolution but my advice is DO NOT BUY THIS DVD PLAYER! I wish I had read these reviews first.

We just bought a cheapie Target brand DVD player (TruTech) and it works great - it may not look as cool or have the brand name but hey, it works and that's what counts! At the price of the TruTech ($99), we can buy two for the same price as the Samsung. And Target has a 90 day return policy (keep original packaging) which is far better than Best Buy's 30 day policy.

Moral of the story - I am through with Samsung and with Best Buy.
