Product Specifications

The SAMSUNG LN40A550 delivers the sharpest, most realistic picture quality you've ever seen. Full HD (1080p) contains 1.5 times more scanning lines than conventional HD TVs. That means more pixels, more details and a better picture. A resolution that is approximately twice as much as conventional HD TVs creates the most perfect picture imaginable. Contrast and brightness levels achieve new heights in this LCD TV. Watch movies and shows come to life with enhanced details in very dark or bright scenes. Enjoy a more realistic, sharper picture quality that's sure to catch your eye with 30,000:1 contrast ratio. One of the most important features for an LCD panel is the pixel response time. Response time refers to the amount of time it takes a pixel to "refresh" itself-to go from being active to being inactive, (ready to be re-activated). The lower the milliseconds, the faster the response time. A very fast 5ms response time virtually eliminates any blurring and gives you smooth-motion action scenes. Want to get more entertainment out of your TV than movies and shows? With our Wiselink USB connection, you can easily and quickly hook up your MP3 player or digital camera and entertain family and friends with a photo slideshow set to music. [+] 6.0 Samsung LCD Picture in Picture doesn't work for composite video source
My parents bought the Samsung LN40A550, which has good reviews in consumer reports. This TV has only 1 tuner, so picture in picture requires another source. In the manual it does states: You can view Analog TV broadcasts on the PIP screen (sub-picture) when the main picture is from an external device connected to HDMI 1,HDMI/DVI 2, HDMI 3, Component1, 2 or PC.
So if you only have an external device which is composite video (yellow RCA jack) you will not be able to do PIP.
When I got my Samsung 50" DLP years ago it had dual tuners and PIP was a simple PIP button on the remote. However the current Samsung LCD and DLPs along many other new tvs appear to have this limiting ability to perform PIP. Even if you do have the required source (componet/HDMI/PC) the process to active the PIP is not just a PIP button click on the remote. Other than the PIP issues the Samsung LN40A550 is a fine tv.

[+] 2.0 terrible television
I've owned a 1080p samsung television (LNS4041) for approximately 2 years now. After fifteen months of operation the thing went on the fritz (turn it on and purple and green vertical lines appear with a black background - no pic.). Samsung claims I'm a few days outside my warranty and won't back up the product. I've called to have it repaired and it will cost $130 just to have somebody look at it. I'm thinking about smashing it into tiny bits an posting the video on YouTube. Overall, I'm very disappointed in samsung and regret the purchase. If you must have this television, buy the extended warranty. As for me, I'm getting my next lcd at Wal-Mart - perhaps a sanyo.

[+] 8.0 It's a winner, except for the sound
Purchased this from Warehouse Deals by Amazon as re-boxed unit for a deeply discounted price and it arrived on time in like new condition. As we're new to High Def. we found the picture in HD stunningly great. Blades of grass on an ESPN HD college football game were plainly visible. Even though the refresh rate is only 60hz and we have no HDMI cable there is very little of the "smearing" that supposedly is a problem with LCD TV's. The non-glare screen on this model is also appreciated in our many-windowed living room. Although there is a website ([...] with tips to calibrate the picture we found it acceptably pleasing right out of the box on the brighter setting. Standard Def is mediocre, but after reading online and talking to the Comcast installers it's really not the TV's fault. The TV just accurately reproduces the faults in a low resolution broadcast. What is the TV's fault, and hence only 4 stars, is the subpar sound. Even after equalization the only two options seem to be boomy boxiness or grainy harshness. Still, since the picture is so good, better speakers can be hooked up, and the unit is fairly user friendly, it is enthusiastically recommended in the +/- [...] price range. Look for a deal in the Warehouse.

[+] 10.0 very pleased
I did a lot of research before settling on the Samsung LN40A550. Samsung is one of the top brands, and the only thing that worried me about this TV was the possibility that not being a 120hz machine would leave sports and action movies unwatchable.

I found a website called tweaktv that offers picture calibration settings, and these made a huge difference on the picture quality out of the box. Changing the sharpness down to 2 and setting the mode to "Movie" make for a huge improvement in picture quality. Jaggy text went away, and the picture got a lot cleaner. I used the tv for a week without HD, because I didn't have time to go get the box. Picture quality was OK with regular cable and component cables. Better than the old regular tv it replaced, and dvds played with S-Video from a standard DVD player looked crisp and good.

Today I finally got the HD box from my cable company, hooked up with HD cables. HD broadcasts are just stunning on this tv (keep in mind that when time you change input sources, the first time using that new source all the settings are back to the defaults. Each new input source will need the picture settings messed with the first time. HD looked pretty bad on the default settings until that sharpness got turned down)... Non HDTV channels look ok, but no better with the HDMI connection, and maybe slightly worse in a few cases.

ANYHOW, heres the skinny. Loving this TV. The menu's all make sense and are easy to navigate. The remote is also intuitive and easy to use( it is NOT a universal remote, btw). Sound is pretty good. Connecting to it is easy, and all the connections are well labeled and easy to use. It looks good, and seems much bigger in my living room than in the showrooms. We see a lot less glare on the screen when the sun comes in the window as well.

And, the thing that worried me- almost no problem with motion blurring. Sports and action movies are all very watchable on HD (somewhat less so on the regular cable). There is a slight amount of blurring during extremely fast action, but its not distracting at all.I was scared that this would be the dealbreaker, but like everything else on this tv, it exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend this tv! If you find a good price on it, buy it without fear.

[+] 2.0 Big dissappointment
I had purchased this tv from 6th Avenue with high hopes and because I believed Samsung is a good brand. However when I recieved it today I was gutted as the picture would not display full screen. I went into the "menu --> Picture options --> size" and set it to 16:9 and yet the picture wouldnt display on the fullscreen. Only when I switched the size to wide display did it display full screen. I had a lengthy discussion with a customer service representative of samsung and somebody is going to come to my house on the 2nd of December to try and fix this issue. Unfortunately 6th Avenue doies not have a return policy for tv's 37" and above. I feel like I am stuck with a defective tv :( . Don't commit the same mistake.

I will update my review with how the repair experience goes...

[+] 8.0 Murph
Samsung LN40A550 40-Inch 1080p LCD HDTVI purchsed this set about week ago and it was delivered in about 5 days- much quicker than Amazon had indicated- delivery person was very accomodating and had called the day before and then 2 hours before he actually brought it. Price was considerably less than big box stores or on line with other vendors-
I am very pleased with the set even with watching just analog as I don't have HD connected yet.-Maybe not quite as clear as old analog set but format & size is different also so this probably accounts for that. I'm sure it will vastly improve with HD.
I really don't have any complaint about the sound but I am not a real audiophile so I think it is pretty good without any enhancing equipment.
I recommend this set to anyone as a very good 40" starter hdtv.

[+] 10.0 Incredible hi-def picture but what about non-HD?
1. Delivery--flawless and timely (ordered from Amazon). I connected it to our Comcast HD cable box, plugged in in, and haven't stopped watching since.

2. Hi definition channels look INCREDIBLE. The much-feared glare from the polished black frame turned out to be a non-factor. It doesn't get any better than this (of course, this is my first step up from conventional old fashioned TVs, so what do I know?).

3. BUT...non-HD stations pretty much look blah. Foggy, snowy, ghosted, continually refocusing, some better than others, but none of them up to par. With some adjusting of contrast, sharpness, and other options, I have been able to "thicken up" the display so the flaws are less obvious, but this isn't the way it's supposed to be.

So the question for those in the know is: What up? Is it a lemon (I doubt it)? Is it typical and we all have to live with it until all stations are HD (that would be suprising since I have been on digital cable for years with flawless display on regular TV)? Is it a bad cable box? Or is there a setting I have overlooked?

[+] 6.0 Returned TV Because of Faulty Seam at Bottom of Set
I don't know if this problem is related to Samsungs in general or just this particular model, but after I turned the TV on, I noticed a small glowing light just below the screen. At first, I thought it was part of some "cool design feature", but after taking a closer look, I realized that this was caused by an improperly sealed trim at the bottom edge of the set that was allowing light to escape through. Naturally I was disappointed because this was my first HDTV. I ended up returning the TV for a refund because I didn't want to take a chance on an exchange having the same problem. On a positive note, because I purchased the TV from Amazon and not one of their vendors, I was able to get a full refund including shipping. Otherwise, I might not have received a full and prompt credit on my card.

[+] 8.0 This TV is Awesome !
I ordered my TV on Wednesday and expected it to come around Thanksgiving.. the thing was delivered and set up by the delivery guys Saturday the week I ordered. IT is amazing, I popped a blue ray, Get Smart, with the rock and steve carrel into my PS3 and the picture was incredibly clear. I used coinstar to get an amazon egift card, and it knocked the price of my TV down to around 850 $ great deal for such a great TV! I also signed up for the Amazon Visa Card and received free financing for the 1st three months. Can't get any better I love my new toy. I have used it for only a day now but I already understand what others were saying about the speakers.. they are a little on low volume side even if i crank it up to an above mid level volume. So I think Im gonna invest in one of those soundbars and Subs that Sony makes they got good reviews on CNET.
Overall I am very satisfied with my purchase.

[+] 10.0 Very Pleased Customer
I purchased this item 11/17/2008; I received it the morning of 11/22/2008. I would have to say I'm very pleased with the amount of time it took to get to my front door. This TV came with free shipping so I couldn't go wrong. Like all of you I read many reviews and do countless hours of research before I purchase something, especially something I have not seen with my own eyes, so I count on all of you. I'm hoping my review will help the inquisitive people out there on this product. I used to be a huge Sony fan, I mean huge!! I was at Best Buy one day several months ago a bought a Panasonic plasma. I was very excited it was a 46" Vera, or whatever they are called. I hooked it up, put it on the wall and I was so disappointed with the picture. I took the TV back the next day. I was looking at Samsungs (LCD) and noticed the LN40a650. I was very impressed, but not with the price. I learned something new that day. I learned about 120Hz fresh. Little spendy for my blood, but fell in love with it. I decided to purchase it, but of course it was not in stock, but they found it at another store. I jumped in my truck and drove to it. When I got there I saw my TV in a box sitting under the 52" version of mine. It was marked about $400 less then the other store. I had to get it. I got this TV home (LN52A650) hooked it up threw it on the wall and I was complete. My girlfriend purchased a blue ray that day. Sony BDP-300 which made picture jump out at me. I was so impressed and I'm pretty much an electronics geek. I was finally pleased. Anything I plugged into this TV I was happy. My point is Samsung rock. I would have to say better than Sony. Sony is good, but way over priced. For the person that is looking for a great TV grab the ln52a650 you will be pleased. Ok, Back to this TV. Its not 120 Hz refresh, but it does a great job. I am very pleased with it. This TV went right in my bedroom. I have to express the importance of going to Samsungs web site and updating the firmware right away. Be sure to follow the directions. There are currently two updates for this TV. 1005 and 1006. Grab a flash disk and get it done. I have read people having issues with things in the past models. Get the TV to date. It will work great. I just added a firmware update to my 650 made the film mode more realistic. This TV is just as good minus the 120 Hz refresh. If your looking for quality grab this TV if you're like me you will be very content. Oh by the way back to the blue ray. DO NOT get the 300 series go up to the 350 with the Sony its alot faster start up, you can hook it up to the internet for the firmware updates and it will put out in HD Audio.

[+] 8.0 great picture quality for such a large screen
this is my 4th LCD TV. I didn't think anyone else could top the 2 Toshiba's I've been using. I love the durability of my Samsung cell phone and Amazon was selling this model out at a very good price so I bought. I am very happy with the picture quality, especially the channels I get in HD. You will need to have an HDMI connector cable to mazimize this quality, however. They sell for $30 at Walmart. My only disappointment is in the mounting of the speakers UNDER the TV so that the sound projects DOWN and bounces off the surface you have the TV setting on. My Toshiba's project the sound out into the room where you get a true stereo/theater effect. It seems Samsung has done this to maximize the screen size for a given space which was my priority, but it it a puzzle.

[+] 6.0 Great display but frustrating experience
I had done a lot of searching and for this price range this is the best looking display I have found. Some other displays that I looked at handle motion and de-interlacing better than the Samsung, but to me the difference was not enough to justify the higher prices. The sound however is really horrible. Like others, I saw this in other reviews and thought how bad can it be? It's really bad. You don't have to be an audiophile to notice the lack of bass and hollow feeling coming from the speakers.
Dealing with CEVA for delivery had to be the most difficult part of my purchase. They never contacted me to arrange for delivery and I came home one day to find a notice on my door that they had attempted delivery and to call them. They would not deliver on the weekends and I had to arrange for a friend to meet them because I could not get home from work within their delivery hours. After enjoying my new TV for three days the thing just died. The status lights came on but no picture. After about 10 minutes of troubleshooting I called Samsung support. They seemed to know right away what the problem was and that it would require a service call. I had to call another company to arrange for service but the only appointment I could make was weeks away. At this point I had had enough and called amazon and told them I was returning it. On Sunday morning I decided I was not going to be denied another Sunday of football in HD so I drove to Best Buy, got them to match Circuit City's price which was about $130 more than amazon, put it in my car, drove home and set it up. The entire process took less than an hour. I then had to call CEVA and arrange for pick up of the dead TV; the earliest they could come was two weeks later on a Saturday and they could only tell me some time between 10am and 5pm. The Friday before they called to say they could not come on the weekend. I now have to take a day off from work to stay home and wait for them to come pick this up.
I have purchased Samsung TVs and monitors before and have always had good luck with them so I was surprised by the dud that I got. But I did end up purchasing the same model and I am very happy with it. I would never again order something from amazon that requires delivery from CEVA. If you don't have a job and can stay home all day to wait for delivery you can save some money, but for me the ability to deal with a brick and mortar store in the evenings or weekends is worth the extra money that I paid.

[+] 10.0 The most amazing investment in my entire life...
This TV is simply an amazing piece of engineering. It looks good, performs good and is definitely my best investment by far!!!

Before I had got this, I was researching a lot about the various specs that this TV has.... It had a good Dynamic contrast ratio(30000:1), a response time (5ms) and the best resolution available as of today (1080p)...

Boy, I'm glad that I went for this set. I compared this with a few other TV sets that my friends had( all were 1080p, brands: Vizio and Sharp 42" TVs) and only then did I really know why every one insists on Contrast ratio.. Man the black in this TV are so black and the picture quality is crystal clear. Sound, out of the box was definitely an issue, however, with a few adjustments (search google for "best sound setting on Samsung LN40A550" and you can find a few links that have images of their custom sound settings. Believe me, it makes a huuuuuuuuuuge difference and now I'm more than happy with my TV's sound quality)

I went for the Verizon's FIOS TV for cable and the clarity of the channels is just out of this world.

After seeing all these things, I just wonder how the higher models in Samsung would perform (one with 100000:1 contrast ratio). People who own those should be ever more luckier and satisfied. If I ever think of getting a bigger TV, I'll close my eyes and go for a Samsung. Kudos to Samsung for making millions of their customers happy.

Don't even hesitate buying this TV.. You wont be disappointed for sure.

Have fun....

We are very pleased with the 40' HD TV we got through Amazon. Two minor exceptions are the sound quality and the loss of quality picture when viewing from an angle. Otherwise, the set is great. I was aghast at all the wires that are behind my set, but I guess this is true of any such TV,

[+] 8.0 Samsung TV's have different quality
There are big differences in quality among Samsung HDTV's, even among LCD's. I have bought 2 from Amazon, and shipping etc. was wonderful, but this model is definately not up to the quality of the other one (which was more expensive). This model give a lot of "shudder" to figures which are moving, as in football players in a game, especially in closeups.

I recommend paying a little more for a better quality product, but I think Samsung is still the best quality and value.

[+] 8.0 Great TV, Great Price
I am not a TV expert. I did my homework, and this came out to be the best TV in the range I was looking at ($1000-$1200). I originally intended to buy a bigger TV, but the quality of the Samsung product swayed me. My only complaints are that it attracts dust, it is slow to turn on (or give you any sign that it is in the process of turning on), and there is only a VGA connection for your computer, not a true DVI input. But the picture is great, sound is fine but it is only internal speakers.

[+] 10.0 Fabulous experience !!
Have had the TV for a month now. Experience has been great so far. Delivery was timely and setup was done promptly. So far the performance of the TV has been immensely satisfying specially HD.
The only problem I'm having is - some of the DVDs I'm playing using my up converting Sony DVD player are producing bands on the top and bottom, even with 16:9 setup. Setting the p-size of the TV to 'wide-fit' fills the screen, but picture's out of proportion.

[+] 10.0 very good TV
This TV is by far more bang for your buck. In comparison to it's sony 40-inch counterpart this is the better of the two. Be aware though that you will have to spend like 30 min. calibrating your tv like all 1080p tv's this specific link will tell give you 3 calibration options that are equivalent to professional services but is free. Amazon is really stepping it up, no taxes and free white glove shipping is ridiculous. This same TV at other stores go for $1,300 without tax included and a 1 year service plan. I paid $180 for the 5 year service plan so in the long run I saved myself like 400 bucks through amazon. TV was ordered on Sun. and I received the tv on Friday of the same week. Also the delivery service calls you to set up a delivery time which is really convenient.

[+] 10.0 WOW!!! Gamers, Buy this TV now!!
I couldn't be more happier than I am with this TV!
All the research I did in finding this TV was well worth it! I play my XBOX 360 on this and it's show the graphics at its best! 1080p really does make a difference and the 30,000:1 Contrast ratio is off-the-wall amazing! I haven't played with much more of the settings it has but as soon as a plugged everything in I didn't have to do anything more. This thing has a mind of its own! just Plug n Play!

There's a lot of bad reviews about the sound. I must be deaf or ignorant to detailed sound, cause I am pleased with the sound quality on this system! I guess if you really want to get amazing behind-your-ear sound you can get a surround system.

So, if you're still wondering whether to buy this, you better do it before the free shipping is out and the White Glove service! I ordered this on a Wednesday and it got to my house on Saturday! I didn't have a rush delivery at all.

[+] 6.0 Awesome picture, warranty service disappointing
After months of looking at a variety of LCD tvs to replace my Sony XBR CRT, Samsung was the clear choice due to the phenomenal picture and great price-value equation. The television is great, but I have knocked off two stars due to delivery and warranty service problems.

I have mixed feelings about the delivery by Ceva. Six days after placing my order, the Ceva dispatcher called to schedule delivery. Unfortunately, the "local" (actually based in another county) Ceva only offers two options each week for deliveries, between 10am and 2pm on Monday or Wednesday. I had important client conference calls scheduled at 10:30a.m. on both those days and asked the dispatcher to put a note requesting delivery after Noon. She refused to do so. Ultimately I had to wait an additional week for delivery due to their limited options for delivery windows. While I understand and am used to delivery "windows",to only offer delivery during two timeframes a week does not give you many options. Once the driver called me to get directions,he was very flexible and in fact made the delivery on a Tuesday, which the dispatcher had insisted was not possible.

After 5 weeks of enjoying my new LCD, suddenly it stopped working (had power, but no picture and no chimes). I went through all the trouble-shooting steps then called Samsung, who said they would schedule a service call. The Samsung rep also gave me the name and phone # of the designated repair facility and recommended I call them myself, which I did the following day.

The earliest appt.they could give me for repair was more than a week away. We scheduled the repair for a Friday and I arranged to work from home that day. At 11 am,the dispatcher called to tell me they were canceling the repair appt.because the part they suspected was the problem (power supply) had not arrived from Samsung. Even worse, they said that Samsung was backordered on those parts and could not provide an estimate of when more would be available!!!! She said she had a dozen other appts.to cancel that day for the same thing.

So I waited another week. Finally I received a call from the repairman letting me know he was on the way to my house. No one had notified me in advance so I left work to meet him there. Once the repairman arrived,he repaired the tv (turns out it was the main board) quickly and efficiently.

Overall summary:

- GREAT television picture and beautiful set at an excellent price
- Many have complained about the sound, but I adjusted the audio settings based on the recommendations at the AVSforum, which made a significant improvement. Also sounds great running through my Sonos system and external speakers.
- Scheduling inflexibility by Ceva and the Ceva dispatcher's attitude did not feel like "white glove"service to me. The attitude and professionalism of the deliveryman, once we were put in direct contact, was great
- The local repair service was friendly, although communications could have been better.
- Samsung's inability to communicate when they would have more power supplies available is unacceptable. From what the repair service said,it sounds as if they're having to replace a lot of power supplies on these tvs. However, since it turned out to be a completely different part that required replacement, the repair service should have kept our original appt. Their "guessing" delayed the repair by a week.
- The fact that the main board failed after only a few weeks of use concerns me....
-All that said, the tv repairman said the A550 is the model he is planning to buy.

[+] 8.0 Great picture, lousy sound
Great picture, easy to use menus.
But the sound is horrible.
Had to plug in a PC 2.1 speaker system as the built-in speakers were not listenable due to distortion.

[+] 10.0 DO NOT LOOK ANY MORE- YOU HAVE FOUND IT!
My husband and I are just regular people looking for a replacement TV for our living room. We don't know or even understand all the fancy terminology or the inputs, cables, components, etc. that now come with buying a TV. We are actually "old school" people that just watch our TV, so understand that our expectations are for picture quality and value alone. We stood in front of many TV's and searched on-line for months before purchasing, and we are absolutely thrilled with the quality and the cost. My sister has a Samsung 42" 720, and I cannot believe how much better it looks than hers (plus they bought at a much, much higher price about a year and half ago)!! So get it and enjoy!!

[+] 10.0 Great TV
I have had the TV for almost two months and it has worked wonderfully thus far. The clarity of it in comparisson to other major brands is what sold me. No complaints here.

[+] 10.0 Great balance between price and performance
As a budget-conscious college student with a newly acquired PS3, I spent the better part of 6 months researching TVs with one goal in mind: get a great picture within a $1000 price point. Ultimately, after reading online reviews, I settled on this TV for a few reasons: 1) GREAT contrast ratio, darkness level, and color 2)1080p (although the difference from 720p isn't particularly noticeable, unless you HDMI the TV as a computer monitor) 3) 40" is plenty of size for a dorm room, 4) the non glossy screen. In my dorm room, sometimes it is impossible to turn off all of the lights or cover the windows. Thankfully, the matte finish on the screen makes the tv look great, even in normal or even brightly lit rooms. Samsung is a great brand, the 550 series is a great series.

The only thing that has bothered me about the TV is the reception of the remote. The remote itself is great, but sometimes the TV does not respond to the remote unless you point it in just the right spot.

[+] 10.0 MB
This is a great TV. I agree that the sound could be better, but it can be improved if you make adjustments with the onboard equalizer. I got it ahead of schedule and had no problems with delivery even though I live in a fairly rural area. OK, I'll admit my red-neck delivery guy didn't wear white gloves, but the set got here safely, and is working perfectly!

[+] 10.0 Perfect Television
I did extensive research before I bought this TV. Went to Best Buy to view some different models, checked out Consumer Reports for ratings, and read many reviews online. I'm very happy with it. Amazon shipped it quickly...the shipping company called the day before to make sure someone would be home. (Always have the shipper open the package before leaving your home so you can look over your TV for any damages.) There are plenty of adjustable color features to fine tune the picture to your space...which is something all stores do to optimize the picture under the store lights. If you're looking for a 40" LCD this TV is a great choice.

[+] 10.0 Nice
Its nice. I wish I could use the PIP for more than just basic channels though. I expected to be able to watch two components at once.. but I am only able to watch "TV" through the PIP and since I have an HD cable box, I cannot watch anything but static. If any one knows a way around this, I would love to hear. My email is: Murda Was Da Case 187 @ Yah Oo.com without any spaces.

[+] 10.0 A Wonderful Product
This Samsung LCD HD TV was relatively easy to set up. It has an amazingly brilliant picture. Side-angle viewing is surprisingly good. The sound quality leaves more to wish for, but is acceptable for its built-in design.

[+] 8.0 Screenwise a gamers delight
Cable isn't available to me, and I found satellite TV to be very unreliable and costly. So its just me and my game systems (all 3 next gen + Dreamcast, NES etc..)and my collection of DVDs and Blurays that will be giving this LCD a workout. Incorrect as I now get stunning HD reception on channels that previously were unwatchable (compliments of PBS HD and CBS HD) for free with an old UHF antenna. I call this set the natural enemy of the couch or a gamers best friend either way its hard to tear your eyes off the 1080p image. Initially I tried out my 360 through the COMPONENT and SVGA connections available on this set, component cables showed ghosting compared to the VGA input, and HDMI proved to look the best. Next up was the Wii and without a set of component cables this system looks a little blurry in its non HD display, but the widescreen makes the Wii and it's games more playable and appealing. Finally I hooked up the PS3 with HDMI and, WOW this system looks and plays great on this TV, 1080p can tend to show jaggies sometimes but the resolution is overwhelmingly superior to anything I have experienced that I find myself playing better, and for longer lengths of time (particularly with FPS games). I recommend a PS3 or Samsung upconverting DVD player for old DVDs, as the image particularly with animation and CG is vastly improved. The weaknesses of this amazing monitor/TV are the somewhat weak 10 watt speakers (they still have decent seperation/depth but they are little puny for the size of the image), also the super glossy finish of the frame may bother those with very brightly lit living rooms or lots of interior lighting, but in my batcave I don't notice this at all. The OSD and remote take a little getting used to, but are laid out well for the most part.
This television is a solid value, with the right amount of care put into its design, (stand, light, input options) and a superior image to most HD sets I have seen. Side note playing with the settings(contrast brightness, backlight) on this TV will result in a much better picture out of the box as factory settings are way too bright IMO. Same goes for the speakers equalizer settings.

[+] 10.0 Wherehouse purchase, wouldn't know it
Purchased this Samsung LCD for under $1000 (including tax and shipping) from the Amazon Wherehouse. This highly rated HDTV (a Consumer's Best Buy) sells for hundreds more at other sites, it's presently on sale for $1299 at a well known local retail outlet. It arrived in original new unopened packaging. The delivery was "white glove" so the set was uncrated, placed and made optional by the delivery team. As for the Samsung itself, it is all one could hope for. The picture is perfect. It allows for three HDMI inputs, more than competitors in the same price range. I can not only recommend the TV but the Wherehouse purchase as well. This was our second purchase from there and both were more than satisfactory, better than expected.

[+] 10.0 Great TV! Great Price!
If you want a great tv for a great price, buy this TV now. I have basic cable and mostly use this TV for Blu-ray movies. But, when I plugged it in and did an auto channel search, my basic cable picked up HD channels... weird, still trying to figure out how. Anyway just buy the TV you'll love it.

[+] 10.0 Samsung 40 inch
I received the product in less time than I was originally told, and that was a pleasant surprise. Installation was easy and straight forward and the TV is everything I expected. I would recommend this product.

[+] 8.0 Smaller than exected.
I have a 36" sharp regular t.v. that is huge in my small apt, so when I ordered this 40" I expected to be as large or larger, but it wasn't. The television was smaller but the picture is great and so far so good on unit quality. I've had the t.v. about a month now with no problems. Sound quality is perfect for me, but I think if you are planning to place the set in a large room, you'll need a sound system.

[+] 10.0 Exceeded My Expectations
Amazon was an amazing company with which to work. The price was the best around and the product terrific. I was especially impressed with the delivery service. My TV was delivered in absolutely perfect condition. I would not hesitate to recommend them.

[+] 10.0 Excellent purchase, great shipping service
After a lot of debating, this was my first online big ticket purchase. I bought this over a Vizio from CC, which was over $300 cheaper! And I do not regret the decision. The picture quality is amazing. The sound is also very good. Lots of inputs at the back. What more can you ask?

The shipping service, CEVA was a mixed experience. The called the day they received the TV and I setup a time within 30 mins for them to come to my house. The guy opened the TV and put it where I wanted it. He then had me inspect the TV and switched it on. There were no defects, needless to say! However, 3 days after that I received a 2nd call from CEVA asking about scheduling an appointment for delivery of the TV!! How can that be, I had already received my TV. Maybe they were giving me a 2nd TV?? I told them I had already received it and hung up!
The only weird thing about this TV (and maybe others, or maybe with my cable box - TWC) is that when changing channel from (HD <-> SD) it blanks out for a sec. Kinda similar to what a PC monitor does when you change resolution. Dont know if others have noticed this, or is a 'feature' of HD TVs.

[+] 10.0 Great Deal, Great TV
Ordered this TV on Sunday and it was delivered to me on Wednesday with the delivery men bringing it upstairs to my bedroom...and shipping was free. Wow. I have to say that I feel like this is one of the best purchases I've made in a while. The TV is great; exactly what I was hoping for. This is a great deal on a great TV.

[+] 2.0 DO NOT ORDER FROM 3RD PARTY VENDOR
I've ordered from amazon.com for about 3 years. I am a prime member. I ordered this TV because of the other users ratings on this web site. This TV has pixilation problems. When there is fast motion, you can see the pixels for a brief period less than 1 second. I have a plasma TV with the same Fios connection with no such problems. If you are not a videophile this will not bother your. If you however pay attention to it like I do, this will drive you nuts. I tried to return the product to 6th avenue electronics (3rd party vendor), and they will not take it back because TV is larger than 37 inches. They claim this was in the fine print when I ordered. Their rep. told me all LCD's pixelate with fast motion! Come on, I thought this technology had improved. I don't care about it being bright, next time I'm going back to plasma. Amazon.com rep. was from overseas and was useless. I'm done with ordering electronics through amazon. I'm very disappointed.
