[+] 10.0 Great mp3 player---survived washer and dryer---still sounds perfect !!
My wife has used her Sansa m240 for over 3 years now. She uses it while jogging 5 times a week and has not had any problems with it. Until she accidently put it through the washer and the dryer!! She heard a thump--thump sound in the dryer. Turned out it was her Sansa m240!! Anyway I figured it was "toast" but opened it up and took out the battery---then let it dry out overnight. It would start up but acted very strange-----would not respond to most of the controls etc. etc. So I decided to do a "reset" followed by a complete re-format using "fat" in "msc" mode. Once I reloaded the music it seemed to work----I couldn't believe it !! It seemed to respond slowly so I found someone's forum post which suggested to make sure the custom equalizer settings were all set "flat" (no special equalizer settings)----make sure to check that the custom is checked in the equalizer . The volume then increased noticeably----the unit started to respond much quicker and the sound quality was the best I'd ever heard on this unit. I would highly recommend this Sansa m240 !!

[+] 8.0 Good for first MP3 player
I bought this for my nine year old daughter and she loves it....it is good for someone who does not want to go out and purchase an expensive one or if they are not going to be using it much. The biggest problem with the device is that once you put songs on it, you can not delete them....so you better really like the songs you put on there. Also, the headphones went out on her about a month after she got it....so we bought some new ones for about $10, which ended up being louder and better than the orginal ones. Other than those things, it is a good MP3 player for the younger ones or someone new to using them.

[+] 10.0 Fantastic mp3 player at a great price!
I bought this player about two years ago, and I still love it. I listen to it while running several miles a week, and it has even kept me motivated while running two half-marathons. I haven't had any problems with it whatsoever. It's lightweight, reliable, easy to use--and the price is right.

[+] 6.0 Backlight won't work with rechargeable batteries
I've had the Sansa m240 for about a week. It plays my recorded podcasts just fine and battery life seems much longer than with the Creative Nano it replaced. One annoyance, though: I use rechargeable AAA batteries (1.2v), not alkaline AAA batteries (1.5v). I seems the lower voltage rechargeables keep the backlight on the display from working. Also, it feels kind of cheap in hand..but still worth the $20 I paid.

[+] 10.0 Deceptively good
I felt a little foolish praising a $20 MP3 player, but now that they have more than doubled the price, I feel better.

The Sansa M240 is not a cheap sounding player, and the reason may be because it doesn't have the usual cheap chips. Sansa is now selling M240s with version 4.x, which means they have changed the electronics four times. I found a website that listed the chips used in the M240, as of 2008, and they were the same as used in much more expensive players, and the main chip has FLAC and video capability, which this model obviously does not use. So, for some reason, Sansa found it convenient to dump some fine chips into a dirt cheap player, perhaps because they were left over from discontinued models, or they got a good deal?

I have the Sansa E250, version 1 and version 3. This M240 sounds almost identical to the discontinued E250 version 1, but not at all like the version 3 (it sounds much better). I tested this by putting the same MP3 of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, fourth movement, on both and AB'ing with a first rate stereo system. Both had excellent stereo imaging and detail. The E250 sounded a bit smoother, the M240 a bit brighter.

I am now listening to Beethoven's Triple Concerto over a stereo with the M240 as a source. If I didn't know, I would not have guessed the source was a $20 MP3 player. The solo instruments are vividly distinct and positioned, even with the orchestra going full blast.

Mine came with a soft vinyl case and armbad. The earphones are sufficient for audiobooks.

I use Nimh batteries, and the backlight works fine. It's got an easy to use sleep timer, too. The voice recorder is good enough to record meetings. Firmware updates are available through SanDisk.

Cons? I wish it had FLAC capability. There is a slight gap between tracks. The track time counter is impossible to read without magnification, and fast forwarding is slow. Battery life on Nimh AAAs is probably less than 10 hours. I wish it was a 2 gb, but I solved that problem: I bought two.

[+] 8.0 Does the job!
It may not be classy looking or offer all the latest features but for functionability, easy of use, practical and doing what it was designed for, it's great. Inexpensive, reliable. I bought one for my wife 1.5 years ago and just bought another one for me.

[+] 10.0 Rockin' to my Favorite Tunes
The SanDisk Sansa MP3 player is AWESOME! It's totally plug and play. I can listen to my favorite song or listen to my local FM radio stations. Both come in amazingly clear. In other words, the sound quality is AMAZING. One of my favorite features is that I can easily choose a particular artist and listen solely to their songs if I want to. It's zero hassle. So if you're bored with what you currently have, or it's just too much drama to listen to your favorite tunes buy a SanDisk Sansa. You'll never regret it.

[+] 6.0 It okay...
Works well but takes battery which is not convenient and needs a clip so you can work out with it. It does not transport well. Otherwise, it holds enough songs for me and its reletively easy to use.

[+] 8.0 It's good, for the price.
I got one of these when they first came out, 1-2 years ago.
Still works fine.
A sturdy player, it came with a wristband, so I'm guessing it's meant for exercising.
Not that I've used it for that, but it's a fine player nonetheless.
The bundled headphones are pretty bad...they lasted a few months before they started to die out.
The storage space, yes, it's low, but if anything, the FM radio compensates.
Running on an AAA battery can be better for traveling in some cases. I'd imagine that an AAA battery is more available around the world than a compatible power socket. You can always lug around a pack of AAAs.
My only concern is that they don't do well passing through x-rays...it'll mess up the firmware a bit, but resetting the battery fixes that.
The custom equalizer is a plus as well.

Overall, a decent player for the price, although by now, outdated.

[+] 4.0 Too complicated for me.
This is my third SanDisk mp3 player. I still do not understand how to use it. I have asked for help from the company before, but the language barrier did not help. You must know what you are doing before you purchase one of these. I do not like the earbuds and so purchased my own headphones. I also purchased an FM transmitter from SanDisk that doesnt work at all. This should be for people that already know how these devices work. I am i computer programmer and it was too hard for me!

Thanks

[+] 8.0 Good for the money
I bought this back in Nov 07? And it is a good player and everything worked fine.
It had a problem for the last month were it tries to play every song twice. When out for a walk must push the forwad button every stinking time to go the next song. Given all that, I like the fact that the aaa battery is replaceable and lasts about a month or so. Mine got lost (me thinks someone had sticky fingers) and want another player. I don't need that many songs so the 1Gig seems like plenty for the money. I am going to try and get another since the unit lasted so long and was lost?
I'll have to keep in my sight better. I wonder if I am going to have to call the Amazon people in order to buy this as they will insist on asking me if I am sure as I already bought it but then will not let me add it to my ccart. I have this same problem when buying a duplicate as a gift for someone. Amazon will insist on not letting me buy something twice ? Well - wish me luck.

[+] 2.0 Did not work with downloading audio book
I specifically bought this in order to listen to audio books downloaded from the library (free) or rented from a company [...] but after almost 3 hours on the phone with tech support, it still was not able to download and play audio books in the "wma" format. So, I had to return it. I did, however, purchase another MP3 player from Sansa called "Sansa Clip" and that works perfectly. They were about the same low price, so if you need an MP3 player for the purpose of listening to audio books, get the Sansa Clip [...]

[+] 8.0 Third time buyer
This is a great product for someone who is new to MP3 players and wants to get started. It's easy to use to load your own music, podcasts, MP3's. However I have not found an easy way to load new music - such as itunes, etc. It does not seem as compatible but that may be my fault for not researching more. You also have to make your playlists before you load your music - you cannot edit it after you have loaded it. But once the music is on, it's an easy use and I use it several times/week. Great product for the price!

[+] 10.0 2nd one of these, works great.
I had to finally replace my first one after 4 years because the hold button broke. I used this thing in the cold, heat, in a machine shop, running, and anywhere else I could bring it. This thing takes abuse and continues to go!

Those with the freeze issue -- there are some issues with older firmware that I had the first few months with my old one. Just make sure to update it right away, and no problems from there.

One of my favorite features is the resume feature. I listen to some podcasts that are an hour or more long -- so it's nice to be able to shut it off in the middle of one and when I turn it on ir resumes at the point I shut it off.

Great product, great price.

[+] 8.0 Great little MP3 player!!
These SanDisk Sansa are a great little MP3 player for seniors. You don't have to worry about a picture or video on a small screen. You just input your favorite music through your computer hookup (click and move music files) and listen for hours. Very light and basic. The screen does show you what music is playing. We have 3 of them with different music.

[+] 6.0 Fine for music, not so good for audiobooks
This player is easy to use, has decent sound, and comes with a plastic case and armband. The AAA battery is convenient and lasts pretty well, and NIMH rechargeable cells work fine.

It's a very basic player, in that it doesn't have a lot of options, but does all the basics such as sorting your music by artist, album, etc. Simple drag and drop works fine for transferring wma and mp3 files, and it also synchronizes with Windows Media Player, if you prefer things being done automatically. I'd say for playing music, this is an excellent player.

However, if you intend to use it for audiobooks, there are things to know in advance. It does play DRM-protected media fine. While it resumes playing where you left off, if you plug it in to a computer, it loses its place and starts over. This is compounded by having no bookmark feature, and the fast forward is VERY slow if you are going through several hours of audiobook to get to your spot. It would be a real nightmare on NetLibrary files, which are one file for the whole book. A simple bump of the skip-fast forward button will take you to the next file, so in theory you could spend a good hour holding that fast forward button down searching for your place. Even with the smaller ~1 hour Overdrive media files, it can take a long time to get to a certain part of the file.

All of these players seem to have their glitches, and this one's lack of bookmarks and poor fast forward are the main ones. The "skip forward" button can't be set in the menu to only skip a minute ahead...it goes to the next file, which is fine for songs, but really bad if you're in the middle of a book and accidentally bump it. If you want it for playing music (4+ stars for that), you should enjoy the player; for books (2 stars), keep looking. Beats an iPod, but there are better players with many more features available.

[+] 6.0 Great, once I got it going
This thing is so tiny. It's only 1 ΒΌ" x 3" and weighs 1.5 ounces with the battery. It actually comes with AAA battery. No need for charging.

I had a hard time getting it to work. The driver wouldn't install on my Windows XP system. Something about an invalid INF file. As I searched the web for a solution, I found that was a common problem. I finally installed a file named Microsoft_User-Mode_Driver_Framework_Install-v.1.0-WinXP.exe (sorry, links to other sites aren't allowed in our reviews) and Windows Media Player 11 (I had 10); and afterwards, I was able to install the drivers. Maybe that will help others.

There are lots of nifty little extras. The player came with stereo earbuds which are comfortable and the music is clear. I can listen to the radio and record my voice. It comes with an armband and a plastic case.

I wish I could load music with a card. Instead, I have to connect via USB port. Shuffling the music around has to be done via the computer.

Still this is a great little mp3 player. I wouldn't recommend it nor buy it again because of the problem I had with the INF file, but I like what I have now that it works.

Perfect product to bring to the gym and work out with. This is a durable mp3 that I've used for five years. The storage capacity is approximately 80 songs and you will not be afraid that this product will be stolen or damaged at the gym due to its value. I paid $30 for this 5 yrs ago so I am sure that you will find this at a much cheaper price. Easy to download songs, drag and release songs using the computer's mouse.

[+] 10.0 enjoyed product, not purchase
I ordered three of these for kids in the family, and liked them so much we ordered two more for the adults. Easy to use, battery life good, able to use rechargeable batteries, SO easy to download music. Even the 6 year old can use it with ease and find what he wants to listen to. Unfortunately the order process was a nightmare from Tigerdirect, so while I would highly recommend the product, I would highly discourage the supplier we first used (and had to return them and order new ones through someone else).

[+] 10.0 sandisk sansa mp3 player
this is one of the cutest mp3 players that i have ever seen.Ive tried to get them from local stores like target or walmart but i was constantly having issues with the products they sell there.I found this one on amazon and figured i would give it a shot.It turned out to be one of my best purchases because this product is lightweight, small and compact, it holds almost 400 songs and the screen lights up.I like the fact that it runs off of a triple a battery because i feel that charging it constantly ruins the internal battery that some of these mp3 players have nowadays.I reccommend this product to parents who want to get their child something that will not break or bend...something that is fun to look at and holds a large capacity of music for such a great price!

[+] 10.0 Great little MP3 player!
This is the first MP3 player I have ever owned, so I have nothing to compare it to, but so far I am very pleased. The one I ordered was refurbished, so it did not come with an instruction manual, but I found the player to be very easy to figure out. It's easy to turn on & off (just hold the power button for a few seconds), it's easy to figure out the menu (everything is there on the screen....which is very easy to see & read), the buttons/controls work great & are easy to figure out. And it was very easy to download music to it. I had music already on my computer, so I just plugged in the MP3 to my computer via the USB cable the MP3 came with, and viola, it opens up in a window, and I just open up a folder to store music in, and I just drag & drop. It was so easy! Also, I am very pleased with the sound of the music & with the earphones & also with the FM reception. The only thing I haven't tried yet is recording my voice, so I can't review that part of it. Overall, I would recommend this product. It small, easy to use & figure out, and works great. Does what it's meant to do, and that's play music! No need for all the frills of watching videos & whatever else the more expensive ones do. I just wanted to listen to my music on the go, and this MP3 does a great job of giving me what I wanted!

[+] 8.0 It's a good player for the $$$ - Freeze issue is not what most think it is
It is a good player and the FM radio is a nice touch. The player is easy to use and I really have no complaints.

The "FREEZE" issue is this: If the battery gets low, the unit tends to shut itself off when you try to power up and it freezes - or looks forzen. What you do is just let it sit overnight and the power runs down all the way. Then you can recharge and all is well.

Is this annoying? YES - but keeping the player charged stops that anyway.

[+] 2.0 I'd give it 0 stars if I could
This is the worst mp3 player I've ever used. I had a creative nano before which was decent and I also have the nano gen 3. I got this to play ebooks which were protected WMA files from the overdrive media console. On power up again it plays the track from the very beginning and not where I stopped before and for this reason I always have to remember where I left off. To make matters worse it doesn't even remember how long a track is and an hour track sometimes shows as only 30 min and 1 hour 30 min at other times. I wanna put this sansa mp3 player in the trash. Keep away and look at the competition. Get a zune or an ipod.

[+] 2.0 Failed to work exactly after one year
I rarely used this. But it failed to work exactly after one year. Do not buy any Sansa MP3 players. They are not reliable.

[+] 6.0 An OK MP3 player
The player is OK. It uses up a lot of memory so you can't use AAA rechargeable batteries, or else you have to them keep constantly recharged. There isn't that much memory, so if you put a couple of albums on there, it uses most of it up. I tend to use it for the FM radio, which works well in a metropolitan area with stations close to me. The sound quality is good. I got it because my iRiver got water damaged (my own fault - duh!!) and I wanted a cheaper replacement. It comes with the arm strap, so I can avoid the water damage like I had with the device. I don't regret getting it, but I wouldn't recommend it if you want a high-end player.
