Audio Book Bugs Look No Further!
The SanDisk SDMX2-1024 Sansa e140 1 gb audio player is everything I wanted. Extremely easy to operate once I figured it out, runs forever on a single battery, great memory for audio books with an additional 2gb expansion slot. My friend got one that defaulted to Japanese but we fixed the problem on the menu. The price is stupendous for the amazing quality of sound. Radio pick-up is excellent. I don't download music and bought it for books and could not be more pleased.
This player is small and lightweight. I carry it in my pocket when exercising and you barely know it's there. There is an armband that comes with it + the cover if you don't have pockets. Adding songs is simply drag in drop in Windows Explorer. The screen can light up blue when you press a button and automically turns off. You can change the brightness of it too.
It works seemlessly with the SD card, but using an SD card means it powers up a little slower because it has to do a seperate "check" for the SD card slot otherwise it treats the card like internal memory. Plugging the player into the computer, the player will show up as two seperate drives 1 for the player's internal memory and 1 for the SD slot.
The best part for me is that it very handy for transferring files so it is very convenient since I transfer work from school to home and vice versa.
The bad part about this player is that it has no playlist function. You're stuck with either play by song name, artist, album, play all, etc. So you might find yourself skipping over several songs in your library because you might not want to listen to that particular track right now or maybe you just want to listen to tracks you've recently added. Overall, good player, but lack of a playlist function is inconvenient.
Screen too small and if you stop in the middle of a song it doesn't save your place in the song.

Cheap, pretty dependable, but sometimes...
The features on this player are outstanding for the price. I was impressed by the ability to expand the memory, the built-in FM receiver, and the size of the player. However, not being able to use playlists, no rechargeable battery are drawbacks. There are strange quirks with it too, mixing up tags on songs, and the sometimes very slow startup of the unit is annoying at best. It takes some time for the unit to respond and advance to the next song when you hit the forward button, but once you get used to it it's ok. I would rate this about a C-.

Good value, decent function. Bookmark really works!
I have been looking for a MP3 player with
(a) low price,
(b) expandable SD slot,
(c) low maintenance cost,
(d) sufficient operation modes,
(e) bookmark function for audio book listening,
(f) support various music file format.
Luckily, Micro Center is selling the refurbished e140 for only $30 a piece.
Pro:
1. No software installation needed. It's just like another flash drive to the PC.
2. Use AAA rechargeable battery, no proprietary internal battery.
3. Expandable with standard SC card, not the mini-SD or micro SD card. It recognizes the inserted SD card easily without any problem. With the inserted SD card, when connected to a PC, PC sees two seperate flash drives. When not connected to PC, the MP3 player treats its internal flash drive and the inserted SD card as 1 drive.
4. To my surprise, the bookmark function does work not only for audio book, but also for music as well.
5. The menu is easy to manuver around. I used the sansa Express before, it's such a pain to use the menu in the sansa express.
6. While connectting to PC, you can listen to music (on the MP3 player's flash drive) directly with your PC speakers.
7. Has a "hold" latch (not a buttom) to prevent other buttoms from activated when it is in your pocket.
8. Has auto-power down option.
Don't Know:
1. Has FM, but I don't use it.
2. Can record voice, but I don't use it.
3. Have equalizer. I haven't tried it yet.
4. Not sure why, but this MP3 player has a stopwatch function?
5. The package comes with wrist band. Haven't tried it yet.
Neutral:
1. The whole player is all plastic. So I am sure it's not scratch-proof. But they do provide a protective sleeve in the package.
2. You can set the date and time. Not a feature offered by some other low price MP3 players.
3. The enclosed earbud is OK for me.
Con:
1. No debounce spring to remove the SD card. It's great that the inserted SD card leaves only a very small edge out. But it's hard to take the SD card out. If you don't have long nails, you may need some precision tool to take the SD card out.
2. Difficult to insert (and take out) the MP3 player into the protective sleeve. So, I just don't bother to use the protective sleeve.
3. The ">>" buttom does not offer fast forward operation to jump to the song that you want to listen. I have to click the ">>" buttom 100 times to get to the song #100. In Sansa Express, I just press the ">>" and hold the ">>" buttom, it keeps jump songs (a fast forwad operation) till reaching the one I like.
Overall, I am happy with this purchase. A decent MP3 player for such a low price ($30).

Nothing But Trouble
I purchased the Sansa e-140 and a 2GB Sandisk memory card for it a little over a year ago. Right from the start, I had problems with the player. It was fine as long as all songs were on the player itself. However, once I got to the point of needing to put some music on the card, the trouble began. Although I had over 700 songs on the player (as verified when it was connected to Windows Media Player), I could access only 200 to 300 of them. The others simply did not show up in the directory. I worked with Sandisk customer support many times, getting conflicting information from the various reps. On their advice, I tried reformatting and adding firmware, and then transferring the music back to the player and card, but nothing worked. On their advice, I purchased yet another card to make sure that it was not the card itself, but the problems did not go away. Finally, Sandisk replaced the player with an identical player. Excited that I would finally have a working player, it was even more of a disappointment to find that the new player had the same problema. Again, I sought the help of the Sandisk customer support staff. This rep suggested that there might be a corrupt file on my player. So, in response, I checked every file, even going so far as to re-rip every one of the over 700 songs into a WMA format and transfer them to the player one at a time. Finally, I was able to see all of the songs. However, once I added another song at another time, I was again unable to access all of the music. This has always been the case. In frustration, I finally gave up and purchased an iPod. My daughter also has a Sansa e140 and she has had exactly the same problems. She, too, finally gave up and purchased an iPod. My advice is to steer clear of this MP3 player.

Small, Lightweight, & Expandable!
This Sansa MP3 Player is great! I like its size, ease of use, and its expandable to boot! I record various music themes or books to expansion memory cards and I can swap them out depending on what I want to listen to. With the 1 GB memory on board and the endless number of memory cards you can use/swap, the possibilities are endless. It's not as thin as the Apple but it does have a built in FM radio! It scans for the next frequency. I upgraded the headphones and am very pleased with sound quality, ability to search for genre, artist, etc on the lcd screen. The control buttons are easy to use with one hand. I use it for long road trips to block out noise on the plane or road noise. The crisp music in my ears is great!
I love the size and weight of the mp3 player. The sound is pretty nice too (with different, better headphones since the ones that came with it are pretty awful, I hate those stupid earbud things). As everyone has stated, there is no memory for this, none. You turn it on and it goes to the very first song or the very first fm station, which sucks because I always have to take the time to flip through the stations to find something to listen to. Also, I can't seem to get the 4 or 5 preset songs off of it, unless I am doing somthing wrong. Its quite annoying as I have to fast forward to get to my own music. However, it does the job and I all I really use it for is when I go to the gym, so its fine for me.

large step back from earlier players.
I bought this player because it has SD card expansion capability and because I liked my old SanDisk 512 MB MP3 Player (blue).
Now, when you put 3 GB of files into your mp3 player, you want them organized, right? How do your organize your files? Most of us do it by putting the files into different folders (directories). This player does not support folders. You can sort your files only by info in the tags (album, artist, genre etc.) You don't even see these tags when your rearrange your files on your computer. What were Sandisk engineers thinking when they took this function (viewing and playing by folders) away? How do they sort their files on their computers?
The resume function is gone. I have updated my Sansa with latest available firmware update on July 24 2007; and there is no resume function. The player starts at the beginning of the last track it was playing when it was turned it off. My old Sandisk player had the resume function. Why is it gone in a newer player?
The covers for USB and SD card slot are tiny pieces of rubber that are not attached to the player. You pull them off and unless you are really careful, you will lose them. On all the gadgets that I have had (mp3 players, cameras) the covers were attached to the gadget body. Why Sandisk engineers could not do it on Sansa?

The perferc MPS3 player for your workout.
I've had my SanDisk e140 for 2 years now and I prefer it over the iPod, especially if you're deciding on an mp3 player for your workout. It's small, lightweight, holds almost 2 hours of music (without the expansion card) and if you purchase a silicone skin cover you can clip it to your waist and never know it was there. It's simple features and large buttons come in handy especially if you're running/biking and don't want to stop to scroll through several menus when switching to another song.
The biggest plus over the iPod is that it comes with a built-in FM Tuner that gets really good reception. This is also a handy feature when you want to catch up on the latest news and current events during an early morning bike ride.
The only downside was that I had to power cycle the device twice. This happened when the device would not turn on even after replacing the battery. Since it was still under warranty I called the SanDisk Tech Support and they help me get the device back up and running on both occasions.
it doesnt work good at all! The scroll on the side gets all messed up long with the volume. It gets scratched up WAY to easy. I really dont prefer this at all!

No playlist management and a scroll wheel to throw out the window
I bought this one for my wife specifically because I didn't think she'd use it enough to merit an ipod. I may have wasted my money. How hard would it have been to add even the most basic "a folder on the disk equals a new playlist" level of management? Or m3u files? Since she listens in the van with the kids I wanted a way to put both her music and the kids on it altogether but still keep track of whose is whose.
And the plastic scroll wheel in the upper corner, forget it. You need two hands to use this thing since you can't reach the buttons, the menu and the scroll wheel in the combination that you need.
I will give it points for just being a simple USB flash drive and not making me run special software. That helps. And the expansion card is nice. But, honestly, I would have been better off with a Nano.

Has worked great for two years +
I've had this for over two years now and it has worked great and done everything as promised. I run and cycle with this daily and it has never let me down. I like the simple drag and drop file management which was straight forward to use. The earphones are great too and have only just broken.
Cons: the provided plastic cover is held onto the armband with press studs. This fits poorly and falls off if you try to use it with the armband. Solution- buy the optional $10 silicone case and it stays on fine with the added benefit of allowing you to slide an extra battery doen the side of the case ready. This works well if you use rechargable batteries.
I'm thinking of buying another model in case this onme ever breaks, but after hundreds and hundreds of hours witout problem there seems to be no need.

Great unit for the price
Overall, this is a great product for the price, but there are a few minor issues that I have with it. I mostly use the player to listen to a wide variety of music. I set it to shuffle, and for this particular use, the player works wonderfully and I have no complaints. I have only loaded mp3 files on this player, so I cannot comment on use with any other file type.
Pros:
easy to hook up to a computer and load with music. The player shows up as a drive letter in Windows (or two drive letters if you have a memory card in it). You can store any type of file on it (pictures, documents, etc.) so it can be used as a storage device, but of course it will only play music.
Displays artist, song, album, and progress bar on the main streen (provided that you have entered all this information in the tag)
You can choose to play music by artist, album, year, genre, etc.
I like the earbuds; unlike many, they are designed to stay in your ear, even when running, and they sound as good as earbuds can. This is the first pair of earbuds I've ever found that are comfortable.
Expansion slot allows you to add an SD card for a total of 3 GB of music
Takes only one AAA battery, and has pretty decent battery life
Hard to accidentally turn off - you have to hold the power button for a few seconds to power it off
Cons:
A bit slow - There is a delay when you tell it to move to the next song to when it actually goes to the next song; sometimes you think it didn't register. Also, for me, it takes about 30 seconds to start the player up with a memory card inserted. If anything in memory has changed since last time, it takes even longer. With no memory card inserted, it takes around 10 seconds to start up.
No playlists - you can store up to 30 favorites, and choose to play through those, but that's it. You can use the genre tag to fake it out; i.e. set the songs you want in a playlist to the same genre. However, this would allow a song only to be placed in one playlist. Besides, I don't like to use genre in the tag, since no song can really be classified in to one genre.
No AM radio - not a huge deal; there is an FM radio
I am unable to get the player to continue from where it left off when it was turned off. Sandisk tech support says to pause the player before turning it off, but that does not work for me. I'm still working with tech support on this. This could be a deal breaker if you listen to long tracks (full albums stored as one file, or audiobooks with long chapters)
If you have an album stored as separate tracks, there will be a pause between tracks. For most albums, this is not a problem as there is a pause between the tracks anyway, but for a few albums (Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon, e.g.) the album is designed not to have any pauses in it.

Nice player, good sound, a bit slow
I bought this player about a year ago. I like it very much, specially because I can use additional SD memory cards. The sound is very good, battery life is OK. I use rechargeable batteries and their performance is so variable that it is difficult to assess the player itself. The only gripe about this player is that it takes a long time to start up since it appears to recreate the song index every time it is powered. The logic relating organization of the songs is fine, but it depends on the ID3 tags being correct. Changing/correcting them is no big deal as you can access the player memory as a drive in your PC.

1 Gig and less than I pod. the ear phones are comfortable and the sound quality is wonderful.
It has an expansion slot too! I can add another gig if I run out of space. I use the FM radio to listen to NPR but the reception is, many time, horrible.
I picked the Sansa e 140 for running and it came with the armband and the SD card slot was a nice touch. What I found is it is made cheap and breaks easily and SanDisk will not stand behind it. My Bro has an ipod, it is made to last and will be what I buy next

Great when working but died after 11 months...SanDisk service redeems a star
I've had the E140 for just over a year, selected for the following reasons:
1) size/form factor
2) features (FM radio, SD slot, AAA power)
3) SandDisk reputation
4) price
It's done well on three of four of these. I really like the size; I keep mine in a tiny neoprene case I bought in Sweden, large enough to hold the player, phones, and a spare battery but still fit easily in a shirt pocket. The features are great, with one exception: there are no playlists, so you have to scroll through your entire music collection or select songs by artists, genre, etc. which can be a real pain when you have 2 gigs of music to sort. Otherwise it's well designed, has reasonable control over EQ, intuitive controls, decent headphones, and works fine with every PC I've connected it to. Price is also good, esp. when compared to packing about a heavy and expensive iPod.
The one major shortfall is that mine simply died two weeks short of the warranty period ending- it shut down while playing and was dead. It had not been abused in any way. To their credit, SanDisk was pleasant on the phone, sent me a prepaid RMA shipping label, and return a brand new (and complete) unit all within ten days of my call. But I'm left wondering how long it will be until the new one dies too, so my rating drops from four stars to three. SanDisk comes through for good service, but this product may not be as reliable as some of their others.
If you're looking for a tiny MP3 player with decent sound, FM radio, and expandable capacity there aren't many other options. You could certain do worse than the E140 for an even higher price. Recommended, with some reservations about longevity.

Awesome little player and SUPER EASY!!!
This was the first MP3 player I have ever purchased. I will admit that the technology scared me slightly and I wasn't sure if I could use one of these with my computer which is about 5 years old. However, after talking to a friend and watching them play with their iPod, they assured me that they are easy to put music on through the computer. So I looked at iPods but didn't want to spend that much. Also, an advantage of this player is that you are able to play Windows audio files on it, in addition to mp3's. I ended up actually purchasing the e140 off ebay from someone who also included the matching Sansa FM transmitter so I can listen to it in the car also. I highly recommend the transmitter also. The sound quality is great in the car and is identical to the sound from the CD player! You can select any FM frequency and set 3 frequencies in memory. 89.3 works fine in my area so I leave it there. Also, the e140 will run off the socket in the car and not use batteries when in the FM transmitter. I purchased the whole package for about $75 so I recommend looking at ebay first but be careful and review feedback on the sellers. I had no problems there.
Anyway, the player arrived and it comes with a tiny USB cord. The first thing I did was head to the Wal-mart electronics department and get a longer cord so I wouldn't have to program the player on the floor next to the computer. I also recommend buying the $10 Sony desk speakers that are there in the mp3 player department. They just plug into the earphone jack and work just like headphones. To get a good sound from them it is necessary to use the equalizer and SRS on the player but they are great additions. The mini CD that comes with the e140 is basically worthless and can be tossed, except for the e140 manual, but that is also available on the website so toss the installation CD, you don't need it!
Okay, to download your music from mp3 or WMA files on your computer, you go to Windows Explorer and just drag and drop the files from whatever folder you have them in to the 'Sansa e140' listed under 'My Computer' on the left side of Windows Explorer. If you want music from a CD, use Windows Media Player to rip the songs to a folder, then do the above drag and drop, that's it! I was able to plug in the player to the USB on the computer and start putting music on it without any instructions. One thing that is helpful is making sure that all the music you want available in one category on your player has the same "genre" before you put it in the player. I did this when ripping from a CD and made sure that the songs were in different genres such as Eighties, Hip Hop, Rock, etc. This is how the player will recognize songs and organize them and that's how they look on the player menu screen. Then it is easier to select "Play all" on the e140 menu screen and just get songs from each genre to play. I noticed the songs from different CD's appear as different folders in Explorer after ripping. Don't drag and drop the whole folder unless you want them to be together that way in the player. Deleting is easy too in Windows Explorer, highlight and hit 'X'. Using the controls is mostly intuitive and easy on the player, just like an iPod. Also, the player doesn't run off the battery while plugged up to the USB. Actually, I was astonished at how easy this was to use and wish I had bought one a long time ago now.
Now, I can listen to the 200 or so songs in my office using the $10 speakers and it sounds perfect as long as the volume is down which is the way it has to be at work anyway. It can get pretty loud too though! I also purchased one of the Sandisk 1GB cards to expand the memory 2X so I can put even more stuff on the little e140. I also highly recommend getting a battery charger and some good rechargeable Duracell AAA's but here's the kicker, if you use a Motorola Razr phone, you can run the e140 off the home charger and not use batteries! It uses the same 'mini-B' plug as the Motorola, at least I think it is called 'mini-B'. If you are going to play the e140 like I do in the office, get one of those if you don't have a Razr phone.
So, if you are looking at mp3 players and you want a good player that doesn't cost $$$$, is incredibly easy to use with Windows, sounds great, and has expandable memory up to 3 GB.....BUY THIS PLAYER!!!
It is F-U-N!!!

Unreliable...Stay away
I bought this item because I was looking for a low-cost, high capacity, Flash-type mp3 player with an expansion slot. I wanted a flash type so I could use it for other activities with minimal worry about damaging the player's moving parts. I had heard a lot of the Rio flash-players would turn into coasters, but nothing but good reviews about SanDisk players.
Unfortunately, the first unit died after 3 months. SanDisk replaced it. However, the protective cover they sent with the replacement unit was filthy; obviously a refurbished unit. Three months later (today in fact) the replacement unit died. I have an RMA request submitted but have not heard back from SanDisk yet.
When it operates, it's great. The only other issues I have with it deal with the Favorites folder. The documentation is very poor about how to add songs to the favorites group (navigate to the song and hold down the center button). Additionally, the favorites folder only has capacity for 30 songs.
Bottom line, if you are looking for a reliable piece of electronic gear, keep looking. If you want to pay less and are willing to play the RMA game, then this unit may be for you.

Good player with expandible memory
I bought this player mainly because I did not want to be stuck with the small built in memory of the others. I already have a Creative ZEN Nomad with 60GB disk for many years where I carry ALL my music. However, I wanted to have something really small and solid state that I could take around all the time without risking hard disk damage. Having a spare 2GB SD card from my Canon camera, the Sansa E140 was the perfect choice. I am pretty satisfied with it, though I agree there is room for improvement.
Pros: SD slot for up to 2GB cards (guess this limit may be increased with new firmwares).
Good sound quality
Easy of use
FM radio
Good earphones compared to other players of similar price.
low price
good battery life (though shorter when using SD cards)
Cons: Does not have playlists.
Slow start (33sec when using a 2GB card and a total of 400 tracks)
Does not remember track position after power cycle.
For me, the most disappointing problem was the lack of playlists. However, it can be "cheated" using the mp3 tags. Since the player sorts music by mp3 tags, to enable a collection of 170 songs I have as a selected playlist, I have set the tag of year to 2010 of all of them before copying them to the player. When I want to play them as a playlist, I just set the player to play the 2010 year songs. Of course the track order is arbitrary (alphabetically) and in this case I use shuffle. To play albums, just select the album and it will play it in track number order, provided the info. is correctly stored in the mp3 tags. (it also works fine with wma tags).
ALl in all, I am happy with it and I hope some of the issues will be corrected with future firmware releases.

OK for Music, No good for Audiobooks !!
This is not a bad player for music (mp3) but useless
for Audiobooks in mp3 format.
It will only resume from the start of the track not

(Some Audiobook tracks are over 20 minutes long)
I'm surprised as their earlier model resumes exactly

Not what I expected
I bought this player for it's ability to use removable media. Had it less than a month and am already having significant problems. Player turns itself off in the middle of a song or e-book, arbitrarily locks up while scrolling through menus, and frequently cannot recognize SD cards. The only way to delete songs from the player or SD card is to sync with your PC. Player will allow you to put more mp3s on it than it should and not leave itself enough room for the system files to execute rendering it useless. Poor documentation for operation and/or troubleshooting. All in all, very disappointing. Had to finally return it to Sansa after several attempts to remedy though the help desk. Maybe the next one will be better.

Most serious of these is the lack of a bookmarking feature and a very clunky system for navigating within and among files, especially as you begin to fill it up. I quickly abandoned it and bought a different player by the same manufactuer: The Sansa m240 costs less and works much better. The m250 doubles the memory for about $4 more.
For the price and for what it can do, this digital player rates a 5 star rating.
I made a mistake by not reading negative reviews about this product. I live in Costa Rica, so we get stuff purchased online shipped through a carrier in Miami. Now that my "Sansa" is not working ("Not enough memory, Connect to PC and delete 4M of songs for Sansa system file") and the troubleshooting does not work, I was told by Sandisk that I can get the item replaced, but I would have to pay for the shipping costs, I am thinking about throwing this thing in the garbage can and forget about it. Sending this item back to the USA costs about $80.
Conclusion: if you are not in the USA, think twice before purchasing this item, you may want to invest a little more and get a better product.

Works great small size
This wasn't my first MP3 player, but it is my favorite.
It works great. I love how small and light it is. Being able to add an SD card was the main reason I bought it. I have a 1 gig card, plus the 1 gig of internal memory.
I fly a lot and never run out of music.
The only reason for 4 stars is the sound quality is good, but not quite as good as my other MP3 player. It may be the headphones that come with it. I like the size and shape, so I haven't tried better ones yet.
I'd buy another one.

Overall pretty happy.
I like the price and the ability to use an SD card for extra storage. The navigation is not as convenient as the iPod and other players, but it does work reasonably well.
I purchased the FM transmitter and car adapter along with some better headphones and am pretty happy with this purchase.

Sandisk has a winner - Excellent value for money
I have this unit now for over 6 months, and I'm thrilled with my experience so far. I don't listen to too much music on the Mp3 player when I'm in town, but I often end up on long distance flights, and that's where I listen to almost 20 hours of music each way!! That's the primary reason I wanted an MP3 player, something cheap, with FM radio & an expansion slot, and most importantly - something with "commodity" batteries, so I was not stuck mid-atlantic with needing to plug in to recharge.
The e140 take a standard AAA cell, and the included Alkaline cell definitely lasted 14 odd hours! My 700 mAh rechargeable cells last 5-6 hours (maybe they're run down now?), I'll probably upgrade to 1000 mAH cells soon.
The included headphones are the in-ear type headphones - great for noise cancellation in noisy environments. I liked the phones, but wanted something slightly better - so ended up buying Creative's in-ear headphones. The end result is great.
I don't listen to audible books or podcasts, so don't have any issues faced by the rest of the reviewers.
NOTE: this unit does not support pictures/videos etc. It's just basic music & FM radio.
Cons with this unit:
* Slow boot up time when there's a 2 GB SD card - take upto 2 minutes to fully power up as it scans the card for all the music on it
* Not easy to turn off - need to press a button for 5 seconds!
* The UI/Controls are not very intuitive
* The volume control is not smooth, and seems to have become even more jerky in these 6 months
* Inability to add more than a few songs to the "on-player" favourite list.
* File transfers don't seem very fast - don't seem to be using the full USB 2.0 bandwidth. It may be due to a slower built-in SD memory. Of course I've now concluded that I might as well buy the slow speed SD card, since buying a high-speed (150X) card did not seem to speed things up.
Pros:
* Small & light
* Included in-ear headphones are great - the wire is a bit flimsy looking though
* Ability to add a 2 GB SD card - with theoretically infinite expansion capability using a bunch of SD cards.
* Uses a commodity battery - AAA size.
* Long playback on an alkaline AAA cell - great for long flights
* The equalizer and SRS WOW works well - definitely helps the sound output.
* The FM radio is great - picks up all 6 stations in BLR with great clarity. Does not work well in an elevator though.
* Worked great with a 2GB unbranded SD memory card - which are really cheap now - about $35 for 2GB!
* Integrates directly into the OS - so each time I plug it in, I just see 2 extra hard disks. Hence copying music is just a matter of drag and drop. In addition, I can also use this device to copy data and other stuff! No more need for my USB key.

Not compatible with to-go subscription music!!!
I bought this player after doing what I thought was research. I purchased it because I have a m230 that I am happy with, but the memory size was too small. I really liked that this had expandable memory, and bought all the accessories so that I could put different collections of music on different sd cards.
When I got the player and plugged it into Windows Media Player, I got a big shock/disappointment. It would not play my Napster subscription music. (You see there is a difference between being compatible with "Napster" as the product desription states, and being compatible with "Napster to go") So I called tech support at Sandisk and they suggested that I switch subscription services to Rhapsody to go, as that service supported both of my players. I was in a dilemma because I did not want to download all of my songs again, but I also did not want to return my player. Luckily, I called the Rhapsody help line before I made a decision and found out that they do not support the e140 either. I found this really odd because the player comes with a Rhapsody installation disc and a trial offer coupon for Rhapsody to go. Three different tech support people at Sandisk assured me that my e140 would play Rhapsody subscription music. Finally the supervisor that I asked for told me the truth, the e140 does not have the capability to play ANY subscription music. (Not Rhapsody, not Napster, not ANYTHING!) The supervisor offered to trade my player for the m240, but I really wanted the ability to expand, and see that trade as a step down. Plus, he was unwilling to buy back my fm tuner, sd cards, and sd card reader.
Buyer beware, If you intend to purchase tracks or compile lists from your own library, or even listen to books this will work for you...but, if you want to listen to subscription music on the go this unit will not work for you. Also, I have sadly learned that even the tech support people will give you the wrong answer if you try to research.
This player is the worst for the following reasons:
1. Slow to start.
2. No bookmark/audio resume feature
3. Do not play files by foler order. I have 10 folders, each has mp3 files named 1.mp3, 2.mp3, etc without albums or artist info. And I can't play them by the folder order.
4. It supports FAT32, but guess what, pop in a FAT32 4G SD, and it doesn't work
5. Amazon do not take mp3 player return
A great product. The interface and display are much better than the earlier models. Easy to use and sounds great.

Great concept, but the execution is disappointing
I purchased my e140 because I had a 1G memory card laying around unused and it seemed like a great opportunity to put it to work in what would become a 2 Gig MP3 player for less than seventy bucks. I previously had the 512 MB Sandisk player that was bulletproof.
Sadly, the e140 is very tempramental - it seems like every time I move (I wear it on my arm) it stops and re-reads the card, the back of which is exposed the case. It also occasionally stops for no discernable reason. The battery life is truly abyssmal.
I hope to still get use out of this unit as a music source on my boat, but as a wearable for the gym or working on projects, it's a failure. I'll go back to the basic 512M unit (and it's 18+ hour battery life) for everyday use. Good luck with whatever you choose.
