Filled with soothing and relaxing tunes. He will always be in my top ten of singer-songwriters...with his beautiful voice. However, there is a sameness to his music....one of the reasons I follow a new emerging SS Arrica Rose who truly takes risks in her latest album, La La Lost with a variety a musical styles...lyrics that are quirky but with depth and insight...each song... more powerful than the other.
I love this CD and so does my 3-year old daughter. She loves "If I had Eyes" and she makes me play it over and over. I really like all of the tunes - an overall solid recording. Although, I do have to say that I liked Jack's last CD a little better.
Great CD, I am having a hard time listening to anything else at the moment.
Easy listening with new thoughts... Jack J. is one of those artists that one can listen to in any mood and will bring you back to the now. Good stuff!
I love Jack Johnson!! His music is wonderful! this CD came in just a couple of days so I did not half to wait long to hear his sweet voice...
Thanks a ton, Laura :)
This is actually my first album purchase for Jack Johnson. Up until now, I only had a bunch of misc downloads. I have put off buying an album because usually I find that I never like the whole thing anyway. This album had to grow on me at first, but now I love, REALLY love every single song. It needs to be played from start to finish over and over again. It also helped that we took it along to Hawaii (his homeland) and it was about all we listened too. It's just so relaxing, moving and very easy to listen to. I can't imagine how anyone could not like it.

Sleep Through The Filler
This is a funny album from Jack. There are some beautiful songs here. The first two cuts set the mood nicely, but the album gets a bit bogged down after that until we hit the gem on the album, which is 'Go On'. I can appreciate the fact that the band needed to evolve and adding a key boardist full time has help create a newer sound. I loved Jack's first three studio efforts, but this album is full of forgetful filler. It feels like Jack was pressured to just get something out in order to maintain the fan base and ultimately sales. I'm happy to have some new Jack in the collection, but hope this is not the beginning of the end for a great artist and band.
Man, I'm a big fan of Jack's, been following him since way back, but I must say this album just disappoints. Was soooo eager to get it when it came out, but first run thru was not impressive. Like his other albums, I hoped it would grow on me, so I listened for probably a good 20 times, still nothing stuck. Put it away for a few months, tried it again, sorry JJ, still kinda lame.
No songs stand out on this one. You could skip to anywhere on the album and I wouldn't know what song number it was nor the name. Nothing like his other albums, which is a BAD thing.
If you're new to JJ's stuff, DON'T get this one! Any of his other albums, including Curious George, have more soul and creativity in them which makes his stuff truly special.
What's cool about Jack is that even his most depressing tunes are relaxing in that laid-back Hawaiian style. There's a lot of disappointment in the state of the world on this album, and a lot of interesting commentary, but the tunes themselves are still calming and uplifting. I love Same Girl and Angel and oh, too many to list. Bonus: my kiddos love it too, and it's so good that it lulls the littlest one to restful sleep on long car rides...
Very cool to know about the solar energy recording sessions, but I would've bought it anyway. I listen to it every day!
I'm a new fan of Jack Johnson and this CD took three or four complete listens before I got it but, after that, I was hooked. Listened to it many times since and after putting it away for a couple of months, I took it back out to listen to chill out.
I like the music. Mellow and, as someone else said, thought provoking.
Our children introduced us to Jack Johnson several years ago. His music is contagious, thought-provoking and mellow. There is no screaming or swearing -- it's relaxing and upbeat. Some of the songs have lyrics that are repeated...and repeated...and repeated. However, we enjoyed the CD so much that we sent copies of it to my 5 brothers and sisters. Highly recommended.
This is Jack Johnson's best and most complete album. If you like Jack Johnson this CD is a must. If you like acoustic rock and relaxing music, this album is a must. I highly recommend this album.

Dette er musik som virkelig kan anbefales når du skal legge deg nedpå og nyte. kjøp,kjøp,kjøp
I was never a huge fan of Jack Johnson until I saw him performing at the Coachella Festival 2008. After that, I bought this album and just listened to it for days. I'm more of a rock and electronica listener, but Jack's soft voice and his beautiful lyrics just made me fall in love with this album. The more you listen to this, the more you will love it. Now, I own all of his albums, and am still listening to his music avidly. It's a great buy. See him in concert, he performs great live!

Jack Johnson is fantastic
This is a fantastic disk...only made better when you see him live. Yes, he can get a little preachy, but outside of that this is a great chill album from a terrific artist. More mature than previous work - includes some great jazz piano riffs, harmonica, etc.
This is not at all what I expected from jack johnson. it really is disappointing, but overall still listen-able.

Not as good as his previous ones
I love Jack Johnson. I live in California and have seen him in concert four times (twice in Hawaii - that's how much I love(d) his music). This cd was disappointing - mellow to the point of boring. I love his mellow, yet catchy tunes -- this just didn't seem like his style of music.

every song in 4 quarter beat--every song, same song
Yikes, how boring. You can speed it up or slow it down but his same riffs and that impossible-to-ignore 4 beat rythymn will about put my 'lil babes to sleep. I guess it's good for that; not so much for the active mind. All his songs are the same song. Anybody else really annoyed about that?

Warm Glow When It Spins
I visited a buddy of my in Georgia and stayed in his son's room overnight. On Keegan's dresser was "Sleep Through the Static." I bought Brushfire Fairytales and had "Bubble Toes" go to #5 in my personal top ten. I loved that tune. Then I bought In Between Dreams, listened and enjoyed it, but nothing really popped out at me. Keegan really likes this CD and gave it a glowing recommendation; so I ordered it. I'm glad I did. The laid back acoustic sound appeals to me, although some added emphasis on memorable bass lines would have spiced it for me. Johnson's voice is pleasant and touches on gentle emotions. The weakest part of his work is his sense of melody that isn't distinctive and tends to make one track bleed into the next. "If I Had Eyes" & "Monsoon" have good energy. My favorite track is the soft "Angel" with its celebration of love, "You've got to be careful when you've got good love cause them angels will just keep on multiplying." While "Sleep Through the Static" may not demand front and center on my changer as often as others, it creates a warm glow when it spins. Enjoy!
If you like Jack Johnson you will love love love this new cd!! Highly recommend!
It's about time I write a review for one of Jack's albums. Several years ago, before I knew about Jack as a musician, I bought September Sessions on DVD. My wife came home, looked at the DVD case, and said, "No way. Jack Johnson? I went to high school with him." I didn't think it was that unusual for someone from the North Shore to make a surfing movie, so I was only slightly impressed. I don't usually like music by surfers-turned-musicians, but I really liked the music on September Sessions and Thicker Than Water, which I bought a short time later. So I started buying his albums. I was a few years behind everyone else, but I caught up rather quickly. I bought Brushfire Fairytales, loved it, bought everything else, loved it all, including Curious George.
I'm not sure, but it's possible that Sleep Through the Static is my favorite album. All of his albums have a different feel, in my opinion, but they're all Jack. Not only are the lyrics clean (unobjectionable), they're also clever and thoughtful. The melodies are simple and beautiful, sometimes mellow, sometimes lively, always fun to listen to. My five-year-old daughter even sings along in the car. Plus, we moved from Hawaii to a very cold spot on the mainland a couple years ago, and Jack's music helps me remember sunshine, sand, and saltwater.
I doubt this review is very helpful to anyone, but I support Jack, like what he stands for, and love his music. This is an excellent album, every track has something to say.

Sound clips do no Justice!
This album is not as rambunctious as some of Jack's other stuff. But I was getting a little tired of the predictable Jack Johnson. This album was what we needed to hear from Jack. This album has more melody, soothing riffs, and will stand the test of time. For acoustic guitar lovers this album won't let you down. I am listening to "What you thought you need" right now and it is sweeeeeet. The album has a much more personal feel to it, as though he's perfoming live.

Not his best work
I am a big Jack Johnson fan. Love his CDs and have seen him in concert, which was great. However, this cd was his weakest performance to date. Don't get me wrong, i still enjoyed it, but i just don't feel it keeps up with the quality of his other CDs.

Masterfully Quiet
This is one of those albums you listen to when no one else is around. It's late at night, you want something to calm you down right before you go to sleep... Let this album seep into your brain for an hour and slip into pure zen. This is such a beautifully written and soothing rhythmic album that it should not be missed. For as quiet as the album is, it never gets dull or boring. Every song is a well conceived idea full of emotion. This masterpiece should satisfy both fans of Jack Johnson and those looking for a well written work of art.

Is This Pot-Smoking Music Or What?
If someone in 2002 had asked me, Have you heard of Jack Johnson? I would have been like Schultz in TV's Hogan's Heroes: I know nothing. But back then I remember going to Tower Records where his Brushfire Fairytales CD was being featured on a listening station. I put on the headphones, punched in the album and then, well, I projectile-vomited straight across the store. My first impression was not a good one.
Fast-forward a few years. I'm standing in Starbucks, looking at the CDs they're selling when a friend of mine who works there asks me, Have you heard the new Jack Johnson? Is it good? I asked. Very good. Very good.
Thinking I have a few friends who like Jack Johnson's work and one or two who literally swear by him--despite the fact that they're $30,000 millionaires--I decided to give Sleep Through The Static a chance. Considering that so much music on the radio these days is static, I've been having trouble sleeping. Maybe Jack Johnson would help me.
I took it home and listened to it all the way through two or three times. I liked what I heard, but the music just hadn't reached me. I just didn't "get" it. But I was still attracted to Johnson's mellow sound. The stuff seems to hearken back to the 1970s era of easy listening, back when the big-time performers all wore white suits on stage, people like Livingston Taylor and Stephen Bishop. Interesting, eh? Jack Johnson, sharing similarities with two now all-but-forgotten performers from a period in musical history that, even today, is looked-down upon....
After listening to Sleep Through The Static quite a bit, and discovering one or two stand-out songs like "Go On" and "They Do, They Don't," I put the CD away for a month or so when I got into this big alt country kick. Then, two days ago, my curiosity got to me again and I put the CD back into the player. It hasn't left the player yet.
I was sitting on the front step, watching heavy rain clouds roll across the sky as wind whispered through the branches of a great big tree that sits outside my apartment. Johnson's "If I Had Eyes" was rolling along and suddenly I got it! I started catching the idea of what the singer/songwriter is doing, although this is difficult to describe in words. Johnson has a nice way of putting simple instrumentation together and the fact that this is the first time that he's added electric guitar and organ to his songs makes for a mellow alternative to some of the quirky stuff I've got in my collection. As mentioned, I took a little time with the album, mainly because the stuff seemed so abstract to me at first. Which is a good thing. Nothing like getting an album of simple material that gives itself up after only one or two listens. But this CD is a CD of relative depth, very lyrically-based and full of interesting twists and turns. There are allusions to a number of performers such as Amos Lee, but Johnson outclasses almost all of them.
You do have to be in the right mood for this one. If you like easy stuff that doesn't demand too much of you, then this Jack Johnson CD is worth trying out. There's an organic quality to this recording in that it tends to grow on you in time. I add that to counter some of the pop-off reviews here that indicate that listeners quit the album after only one or two listens. Things of depth, however, sometimes demand a little committment. This CD is one.
Like I said, I had trouble grokking this CD. At first listen, I thought, Maybe this is music better enjoyed on drugs or something. Half the surfers in Hawai'i would probably agree.
I did through some cosmic intertwining buy this baboon's first album (I got back .50 of the $11.99 I paid for it). I think it was played once and then sold. I bought it mostly cause of the hype and I was living in California at the time so it was huge among the surfer community (I am not a surfer).
I guess most of us have varying degrees of quality expectation when it comes to certain things, namely music and film, so my question is this, what is this stuff? It's not easy listening really because it's so unrelentingly boring that it grates on your nerves. It's definitely not experimental music or anything that even remotely pushes any boundaries. It's not well arranged or thoughtfully composed, even lyrically it is infantile at best. It is not intimate or revealing, the guy doesn't even have the balls to bare his soul. And as for the music itself, it's so broadly drawn and lacks any kind of engagement that it may not even qualify as "actual" music, more incidental vignettes if you will.
What's left is a product clearly designed to appeal to a particular demographic (his buddies are some of the most stellar wave riders in the history of the sport i.e. Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Bruce Irons, Andy Irons, etc.). This guy has a built in audience that probably accounted for the bulk of his initial sales.
Jack Johnson is a mediocre musician with absolutely no tricks up his sleeve, instead, he's reached into other people's sleeves and stolen what would seem like the most simplistic and obvious bits that even those artists would've gladly thrown away. He may be a nice guy, but this is music folks, it's serious business! You know what they say, "If you ain't gonna s@#t, then get off the potty!"
Sorry Jack, you just got flushed down the toilet, don't worry though, you'll have company!

Appealing to Son & Mom Alike
My son, 20 at the time, turned me on to Jack Johnson while we were vacationing together on Kauai in 2006. I had forgotten to bring my Iz CD's and was quite bummed, so in order to calm my post-menopausal nerves, he bought an Iz CD and Brushfire Fairytales. Two years later I bought Sleep Through The Static and In Between Dreams. I love them both and rest assured they will be the first two items in my suitcase when my son and I reunite (he's stationed in Iraq) and take our third trip to Kauai this May. P.S. My son also loves Rammstein, Korn, Smashing Pumpkins, and all the popular headache-causing music as well, so the fact that Jack Johnson also appeals to him is quite the testimonial to his very broad-based appeal.
This CD is aptly named because it is a REAL SNORE! Very boring songs and very monotmonous. Same old thing over and over. Listened to it once and probably won't again.
Should have used real power, because obviously his focus on HOW the album was made has impacted WHAT album got made. This is as bland as recycled cardboard, boring as tofu and has no energy at all. Every song sounds like something that ended up on the cutting room floor from his last album, which paled in comparison to his first 2. Worst outing yet. It's the Phantom Menace to the Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back of his first 2 fantastic albums.
I'm a Jack Johnson fan, and this album, while branching out in his subject matter, and the same beautiful style and was thoroughly enjoyable. I have listened frequently since my purchase
I'm a big fan of Jack Johnson, and was super excited to ge this latest CD. Although it's not my favorite of his and I was slightly disappointed, it's a great CD to pop in and listen to as background music.
I hear Jack and I feel relaxed, happy; the kind of music without any special effects, without exaggerations, that makes you feel good. Just feel good.
I also love the fact that he has this enviromental view, the album was recorded with 100% solar energy wich says a lot about Jack and the way he sees life, earth and music.
Get it, you won't regret it.
Just not as catchy or hooky stuff as his other albums (even the kids one).
I like everything I've heard by jack Johnson, however I liked his previous releases more due to the variety of the tempo and type of music. Most of his previous material varied from folk-reggae to acoustic funk folk to surfer/calypso with a solid bossanova foundation, which made a unique blend with a fresh and enlightened perspective. This release seems to back off the variety and concentrate on the songwriting...I still like it a lot, I just miss the "staple it together" more uptempo selections! Hopefully his next release will provide a mix more in line with the hard rythmn/laid back approach. After all its the highs and lows that inspire desire!

The MAN around our house
I have loved Jack johnson now since 2005 and this album is a winner for me. I have to admit that I loved both Curious George soundtrack as well as his other albums. This one is mellow, easy going, and simple. These are the things I need when chasing my son of two around the house. I don't need any over stimulation here lol!! He is great and it is a album I can listen to with my kids around...unlike alot of contemporary music!! I would recommend this to anyone!!! Another great album...thanks Jack!!!

This cd is classic Jack Johnson and if you are a follower you will love this disc.
I had five of his earlier albums in my CD player at the office and would listen all day to them. When STTS came out, I loaded it on the computer and I'm doing the same thing. STTS is different from the earlier albums, but you will most likely enjoy STTS just as much.

It's difficult to top this Jack Johnson Album
My goodness, it's always been difficult for me to rank the best Jack Johnson albums and even with Sleep Through The Static I still feel that way; however, after almost exactly three years since his last album (not including Curious George in 2006), Jack Johnson came back with an extremely powerful and feelgood album. I have two young daughters who absolutely love Jack's music and he has some powerful ability to create a ring in everyone's ear regardless of their music preference. I dare say that Sleep Through The Static is my favorite JJ album thus far. Of course because he is such a gifted artist, that could change back to Brushfire Fairytales, On and On, or In Between Dreams at a moments notice.
Buy this album, turn the stereo up, sit back in your living room with the lights out, and enjoy. I'd place a 1000% money back guarantee on this album!
Jack Johnson... Not a new singer, obviously. in his new CD, he combines his music with a little bit pop element, so little that you can't really feel it, but makes you comfortable. for sure I get lost in his new album every time I listen to it.

STTS is pretty good
I have been a big JJ fan ever since I heard Brush Fire Fairy Tales back years ago. I have all his stuff, so I was stocked when I heard that he had a new cd coming out, so I got it. After listening to it a few times, I have decided that I really like it. I kind of liked it when I first put it on, but it took me a few times to really listen to it and really like it. I like all the tracks, ecxept the title track. I understand how Jack and others feel about the WAR, but Im tired of it all being shoved down our throats like it is all the time these days. YES, WAR SUCKS, WHO likes it. If you do, you are insane. But war happens unfortunately. I dont support the war, but I do support the troops. The men and women over their fighting for whatever. I rather it be over there then on our soil. Anyway, I like this cd, except for the title track. Everything else is beautiful, as only JJ can deliver....

Sorry, Jack, you know I love ya.....but this album is a drag.
I was, of course, a victim of my own expectations ( which are always the roots of the Tree of Disappointment)....I had read you were going a little darker, a little heavier....alas, it was not so, brah. This is a boring album, and not only because of the pre-release hype/jive.
My wife and I have seen you live, and I have 3 of your CD's in my changer as I write (On and On, B.F., and Thicker Than Water....)
Where is the next level?
You were there with your awesome "Fall Line", the gnarly slide riffs on Brushfire..The bitter-sweet groove and lyrics of "Symbol in my Driveway" (a very underrated song), "Taylor" (Awesome).....Your lyrics are still much deeper than reviewers ever give you credit for (That moron Peter Travers, of Rolling Stone, for example, has quite obviously never even listened to your stuff), but the music has suffered on this disc, man...It's just not very....interesting.
We're still gonna buy your next album, (as always), because you and your take on this life means a lot to us, but we (selfishly) hope to see you crank it up a notch.
See you at the Kokua Festival...
Probably not my favorite johnson album, but definitely great stuff. it's a good mix of on and on and in between dreams with some new elements added by zach gill and the more electric focus. the title track, angel, if i had eyes, and what you thought you need are all immediate favorites, and i'd recommend this cd to anyone and everyone.

Good buy, but outshined by past albums
In theory, this should be a slam dunk for Jack Johnson, incorporating more eclectic instrumentation and still writing chill island-inspired melodies. But when I sit and listen to Sleep Through the Static, I just find myself wanting to switch albums and listen to Brushfire Fairytales, Posters, Taylor, and so many of his other past hits that so outshine his recent album that I almost regret purchasing it. But, on the other hand, I wouldn't have missed buying Sleep Through the Static, if only to support one of my favorite singer-songwriters of all time, and to glean what little inspiration it does have to offer. It is still a really solid album.
I love the idea of this CD being "green". It just seems like a half hearted attempt at a great cd. The songs are just OK. Not bad but not great. Jack's music is all starting to sound the same. He needs to change it up a little. Get creative.
