[+] 8.0 Great to Have Two of Them Now!
Can't believe in this day of iPods that I finally needed two of these great 400-disc CD changers to hold my collection. Have used my first one for over 6 years without problem. And it has never been hooked up to an uninterrupted power supply and all the album info is still intact! Only downside to this product is a faulty description that I used to buy the second one because it had to hook up to the first. Namely, the text that says: What's in the Box - CD changer unit, RCA audio cord, Control A-1II cord, remote control, two AA batteries, and owner's manual. There is no such a control cable in the box nor is its inclusion printed in the box's contents. That control cable is absolutely necessary to get two of these bad boys connected together and to get them to talk to each other (so two players can share one CD player input on the receiver/amplifier). This cable is the best kept secret around (try searching for it). Very simply, this is a 1/8" double male connector cable - MONO not stereo. You only need one, although there are two holes. Now, if Sony would find a computer interface to allow faster titling of the discs!

[+] 8.0 Better with two
The Sony 400 Disc Juke Box is a great way to clear up some shelfspace and give yourself hours and hours of interesting random play. The product really shines if you cascade it with another Sony multi-disc player. We have ours hooked up to our 200 disc player and that permits us to do random play without any gaps in sound. One player plays while the other is selecting and queueing the next song. There is even a feature to fade down one song while bringing up the next for the real DJ sound.

There is a port to plug in a keyboard so you can enter album and artist info easily. However, we discovered that all the info we had laboriouly entered into the 200 player is unreadable by the master player and must be re-entered. It is the only fault we have found with the product thusfar. Also, the 200 came with two CD wallets with the numbers 1-200 already on them but the 400 did not come with any way to store the CD info. We had to buy our own organizers and we have yet to get the numbers. Another shortfall.

All in all though, a good product.

[+] 10.0 Always a pleasure
This is my 6th one. Why? Because they are so dependable and a great storage place for continuous music output. I have a pair (3 pairs total)connected together as to play continuous uninterrupted music. Each pair represents a particular genre (or year) of music that I especially enjoyed. That's approximately 8,000 songs per pair or a total of 24,000 cuts of music from all six CD changers. I really enjoy listening to each connected pair depending on which type of music I'm in the mood for. Some pair of changers play non-stop all night alternating between discs and randomly selecting cuts.

Problems- Absolutely none. Not a second of malfunctions since I started purchasing this product back when this model first came out in the early 2000's. 100 per cent dependable anytime and all the time. I highly recommend this Sony CDPCX455 if you have lots of CD's, need storage space ( no more cracked or breakable jewel cases) and into lots of musical eras.
I use my computer keypad to input artists and titles for easy location and when I need to remove a particular disc for separate play elsewhere. It surely beats looking for that one jewel case among the 3,000 in my CD collection.

[+] 2.0 Absolute garbage
Today, two years after my cx455 odyssey began, I have finally rescued all my cds from this shoddy player. After I finish writing this review, I will be taking the unit out back and destroying it with a sledgehammer. Yes, I hate it that much.

I received the player two years ago as a Christmas gift. Unfotunately, I didn't hook it up to my system and load it with 400 cds for some six months. It worked ok at first, but then the problems described by so many other reviewers began happening. Tracks began skipping on brand new CDs that had gone straight from the jewel case into the player. Soon after, it stopped working all together. Of course, because I had waited so long to set up the unit, the warranty had expired. I thought about having it repaired, but then read some of these negative amazon reviews and decided it would not be worth it given the CD scratching-and-scuffing problems others have mentioned.

I'm back to using my old Sony 200 disc changer, which is still running strong after 8 years. When I get around to buying a new 300 or 400 disc changer, I can assure you it will be anything but a Sony. They have lost a formerly loyal customer for life.

[+] 2.0 WARNING! THIS CD PLAYER RUINED MY CD'S
This CD player started skipping badly on almost every song I tried to play. When I pulled out my CD's I noticed that they were badly scratched all around the edges. Don't even think about buying this CD player unless you want to throw away thousands of dollars worth of CD's.

I was once one of those people who loved this machine. I didn't realize that the entire time I was enjoying it, it was ruining my CD's. The damage doesn't occur immediately. The mechanism that pulls the CD's out of their slots and into the playing area leaves crescent-shape gouges all around the edges of the CD's, and once you have enough of those, the songs start skipping. UNFORTUNATELY, BY THE TIME YOU NOTICE THIS, IT'S TOO LATE.

I also contacted Sony several times and they refused to take any responsibility for the damages that occurred from using their machine. I have gone to the Better Business Bureau and filed a complaint against Sony Corp and I strongly recommend this to everyone who has had the same problems with a Sony CD Player.

I have had to replace 300 CD's at a cost of thousands of dollars. Please read all of the one star reviews, and for your own sake, do not disregard them.

[+] 2.0 Product should be removed from the market
My husband and I bought this CD changer two years ago and it has scratched about 100 of our 400 CDs. When we called Sony customer service, they told us that they were not aware of the problem. After spending $400+ on a changer that we can no longer use (or return), we have removed all CDs that are usable and purchased a new CD/DVD player. We are now in the process of replacing all of our damaged CDs. I would not recommend this product to anyone and I was very disappointed with Sony's customer service regarding the product.

[+] 6.0 Buy an MP3 player.
Aside from storing your CDs, an MP3 player offers all of the same features as this beast of a machine at a similar cost, but they are portable and more user friendly.

The review "Not For Audiophiles" written by 'antropy' really covered the bases, but I wouldn't rate it with one star. I bought this unit eight years ago, and I've never had any problems with it... with todays technology, I find it unneccessary, or nearly obsolete, but I still use mine, and I like it.

[+] 10.0 What a great machine!
I bought this item with some degree of trepidation after reading some of the reviews. However, the price I found via the Amazon Warehouse Deals website presented me with an offer I couldn't refuse. The unit was listed as refurbished and was less than half the price of a new unit.

I received it within two days and it looked new to me, except for a slightly tattered box. Because of the reviews, I was so worried about whether or not it might damage my CDs, I made copies of the ones I cherish the most and put those in "just in case." I have loaded about 110 CDs into it (I can't really see the day when I will fill it up) and have run it fairly solidly for several days. It works like a charm; great sound and it has not harmed my CDs at all. Like others have mentioned, I also put together an Excel spreadsheet to track which CDs are in each slot as I inserted them and I categorized them by type (jazz, rock, pop, etc.) My next step will be to enter these categories as the artist names so that I can have it randomly select those tracks to stay within the same music "mood" (the manual actually offers this approach as a suggestion for randomly playing music).

It does not really bother me, as some have complained, that I cannot also have it randomly select tracks from the same artist as well; if I want that I'll just keep playing those particular discs myself, no big deal. I have also put together quite a few of my own music compilations onto discs and I like the fact that if I want to throw in a few MP3 formats, it can handle those as well.

I find it interesting that some have complained about these type of machines only lasting five years. If I can get three years out of it I will feel I (easily) got my money's worth. The sound is excellent and I also have no issue with the disc changing time. Although it is fairly large (hey, it holds 400 CDs!), it has a really nice appearance with a soft blue light that is lit in the background when it is on. It does tend to get you play CDs more than you normally might simply because they are so much handier.

Anyway, for me, so far so good. I am not really a Sony fan due to their proprietary marketing strategies (e.g. Memory Stick and Blue-Ray)which I think are bad for the consumer, but I have to give them credit for this one....I couldn't be happier with it. If things change in regard to its performance or quality, I will update this review. I am not sure if I would be quite as thrilled if I had paid the full price, but as for the Warehouse Deals deal I couldn't be more satisfied with my purchase.

[+] 10.0 Great CD player
Some friends have told me that this CD player is old fashioned 20 th century stuff and that MP3 etc.. is the way to go in the 21 st century. Perhaps, but I have over 400 CDs and this box does everything I expected it to do. Sounds and works great, easy to operate. I heard rumors about destroying disks but have seen no hint of that in the month I have been using it. I think you should do as the instructions say and NOT move it once it is loaded. I have moved mine VERY CAREFULLY!

[+] 8.0 A good purchase
Now I don't have to go through my cd cases anymore, I just turn the MegaStorage CD Changer on and scroll. I especially like the shuffle mode; depending on your music collection, you can listen to an array of music in one sitting. The only problem I have with it is it's time consuming to load up, again depending on your music collection, and the cd's sit so flimsly(they must to be moved around), that you're not able to move the CD Changer as a whole, but I think that's a minor fault. Over-all A good purchase.

This is the 3rd Sony I have purchased in 10 years. After three years, the player starts to skip and I have to buy another one. However, I love the feature that it holds 400 CDs. [+] 10.0 Organized Storage Solution for an extensive CD Collection
This is an upgrade for our Sony 300 disk changer that worked fantastic, we finally outgrew the old player and this new one has proved to be reliable during these first few weeks of ownership. I should add that we use our changer about 12 hours each day, 7 days a week. I have coupled this unit with a Receiver that has Digital Optical Inputs so the clarity is sweet. I don't use the mp3 functionality, but I understand that the mp3 signal is not routed through the Digital Output. Something you may consider as it may be a problem for some folks. I have also found the History feature on the remote useful as I often get asked what was played a few songs ago. The History mode stores the last eight disks played, viewable by pressing the up arrow on the remote.

[+] 10.0 Not a Lemon
Less clutter, inexpensive, & versatile - this is my second unit. Sony mega CD holders are necessary for anyone with a large collection. I suggest typing all your CD info in MS Excel and forego the task of entering the data in to the unit. Thus, you will never lose it and you can sort easier. Electronics always have lemons, mine was not, and you will see many reviews of folks who had one mixed in a batch of good ones. Please, never move the unit with any CDs in the case, you will damage it, crack, and scratch a few CDs. This is from an unfortunate moving experience so set it up in the place it will reside forever. Enjoy.

[+] 4.0 I guess you get what you pay for. I should have bought two Pioneer Elite PD-F27s!
I have two of these machines, purchased 1 year apart from each other. They are both linked and I am also having problems with it creating scratches around the edges of the discs from retrieving and return them to their slots. There also seem to be slight circular scratches forming in areas in the playing area of the disc, to the point where they finally are rejecteed and will not play. Luckily I have not put my originals in the machines, but copies made on TDK CDRs. I just ordered a 100 pack of Imation ForceField CDRs which supposedly have a anti-scratch coating on them. We shall see what happens. The GQ 'Great Quality' CDRs from Fry's last about 6 months before they are no-longer usable from the random action of the changer.

A smaller problem with features which I discovered and Sony had no answer for. The timer switch does not memorize the Mega Control, X-fade or No-Delay functions. It also seems that the replacement model DVPCX995V DVD/CD combination player has no linking ablility to take advantage of the Mega Control feature on the CDP-CX455 CD changer.

The only answer to this I discovered is I must run them with the $140.00 Sony RM-AX4000A remote control and program it to operate the changers to turn on the units, activate the Mega Control function to link the two machines and start random play. Here we have it, Sony has either dropped the ball or it's just a ploy to get you to spend more money on something which could have easily been done without?

[+] 10.0 So Far, So Good -- Happy CX455 Owner
I haunted the web for a good month reading everything I could find about these mega-changers. I found epinions, audioreview, and Amazon to have the most useful reviews. I have a couple friends who have Sony mega-changers, but they do not live nearby so I couldn't test their machines. I did trade a lot of e-mail and phone calls, though. It was interesting and re-assuring to learn that neither of them has had trouble with their Sonys, and both have had them for over 3 years.

I could not find much information about any of the changers Other than the Sony models, and few opportunities to buy them, so: I headed for Sony. Based on price, I ordered my factory-fresh CX455 from Amazon. My experience with Amazon -- thus far limited just to taking my order and shipping it -- has been perfect. I highly recommend Amazon. Completely hassle- and error-free.

You can get these cheaper on e-bay, but based on my reading I was afraid to order one without a warranty. As my experience with my new '455 unfolds, I might find myself shopping for a used one to add to my system. But, I'm still suspicious that the volume of Sony Mega-changers selling on e-bay means something bad.

I've had my CX455 for about a month. It worked perfectly right out of the box, and it's still working. I say it that way because it's readily apparent to anyone who can read that a fair number of folks have had issues with their Changers, some of them right out of the box. I've had no issues so far.

I struggled with my entertainment center to prepare it for the 23" deep space this Sony requires (if you include space for the cables...which you Should). Also, I have developed a suspicion, more deeply held now that I've watched this thing work, that these changers require a level shelf. The manual clearly states not to tilt or prop this unit up, but I think 'not propping it' is insufficient. Give it a Perfectly level shelf to work on.

I have Not used the software -- the ability to name and categorize disks -- yet, and I may not, Ever. This is the very least interesting part of the changer, as far as I'm concerned. I had my Cds in their cases, in a rack, alphabetically. As I loaded them into the 455, I wrote them down. I later transcribed my writing to an Excel file and printed a nicely formatted list in both alpha and slot-number order. I may someday assign certain CDs to groups, so that during a dinner party I can play a bunch of jazz music, perhaps, but basically, I find the whole naming and sorting thing foolish. I figure I can make it to the living room every 40 minutes to change a CD if I have to. I'm not running a radio station here.

As others have said, it Does help you rediscover disks you have not listened to in a while. And between loading and listening, it might help you cull your collection a bit, too.

My changer says it was manufactured in April of 2007 (sticker on the back). It replaces an older single-disk Sony (CDP-XA-something or other) in my system. I'm guessing the old unit was built in '98 or '99. I was prepared not to like the sound of the cx455 however... wow! This silly thing ain't bad! The bass is Much better than my previous deck. I won't get all flowery with audiophile lingo but, Yes, if you are using an older and average CD player, the output of this unit will probably be a pleasing surprise.

I will probably opt to buy a coverage plan for this, going back to my fear that it might be fragile, and I think I will eventually get an additional unit, as well, for the rest of my CDs. I think what I will do, though, is buy a Beresford DAC, connect each changer's toslink to the DAC, and listen to my music That way, rather than link the two changers to take advantage of cross fading and random play. Probably not a common method of use.

All in all, I Do recommend this unit. Good luck in Your shopping!

[+] 6.0 Mega storage cd changer
1st., The things I like about this CD player: It holds 400 CD's, so I can have easy access to all the CD's, some I haven't played for some time: You can play all the CD's by the same artist with the touch of a button: On all disks shuffle, the unit plays continously: A great storage unit.
2nd. The things I don't like about this unit: You have to enter all the disk info my hand including the name of the album and the artist, using the jog, it takes for ever, using the computer keyboard helps but it is still a project. For the 400 hundred CD's, which I have, probably took me between 15 and 20 hours to enter the info. If you don't use the unit for a month, all the info is deleted, I can't imagine having to through all the time and effort to re-enter the info again.
3rd. Would I purchase this unit again, probably not, for the reasons stated above.

[+] 10.0 Instead of Reg CD's Convert and store MP3's
I've been converting all my cd's to MP3 on my computer. Then I make up cd's using MP3's and storing them in this changer. I'm only up to 160 cd's in MP3 format, that's like 9600 songs if an average cd holds about 60 songs, some more some less. This changer reads ID3 info encoded in MP3 format so all the info reads out on the display. This is no ordanary cd player. It's also a great way to back up your cd's. Plus I use light scribe and use that to record exactly what cd's are on the cd in MP3 format. This changer is awesome.

[+] 8.0 Does a Good Job for Price
Almost gave this 5 starts. I think just based on value that would be rating. Went with 4 because the changer is not perfect. Definitely slow in switching discs, and data entry and retrieval is not perfect. But you shouldn't be expecting a media server when you are buying a $200 CD changer. Want to get 400 CDs off your shelf? This is the ticket. I've had zero issues.

This product is awesome. It's actually a replacement for my 10 year old model that bit the dust. I ordered a NEW one from Amazon and it didn't work properly out of the box. I returned the unit and purchased a refurb from Wharehouse Deals (Amazon Owned) for $100.00 less than the new unit and it works great. The unit has a programming option for Artists , but I actually use it to program the type of mucic on each CD. IE:Instrumental,Oldies,Christmas,Contempory,Country, and Classical rather than artist. This is the unit for you If you need a place to store and play up to 400 CD's.

My dis-like about the changer is, if you carry it with cd's in it, they will slip out of track if the unit is tilted.

I am a mobile DJ and I can't see myself unloading 400 cd's and reinserting them at a gig. I don't unload it but carry it very level and with caution.

[+] 6.0 cdp-cx400 400 cd changer
I bought 2 of these about 6 years ago..My orginal intent was to connect both, etc... however, It's alot of work to program...one of these days..lol.anyway, i orginally hooked them up together, then i moved about 5 years ago and only hooked up the 1. The other is on a chair in bubble wrap. The one I have been using now skips on everything all of a sudden. I brought it to an electronix fixit, say i need new optical reader or something for $195. Instead, I told them to scrap it, hooked up the spare, (which is working), and now will by a cdp-cx455 for $225, so that one can sit on the chair in bubble wrap. Im afraid they'll discontinue them, since these units came out over 6 years ago, and have no upgraded versions (except the dvd/cd combo). and one day, I will i decide which 800 of my 6000 or so cd's ill put into the units. FOr the reviewer that said the 200 unit machines used to come w/ a book to put your inserts in from Sony, what I have done is bought those big simulated leather zipper CD storage wallets from Case Logic... each one hold 264 cds. I have 4 of them (these i also bought 6 years ago), so that when i have a free month, I can do all this..lolol.. The reason for this review is that I saw one from February 07 from Edwards, who said that his machine started skippping after 5 years on everything, and basically, so did mine. I also wonder what the difference is between the cx400 and the cx455...

The unit failed right out of the box. When trying to play any cd, the music plays for anywhere from 14 seconds to 25 seconds and then starts all over again. It did this with any and every cd. I have had many Sony products and this is the first time I have had a problem. The real problem now is trying to get the unit replaced. I did not install the unit right away and when I did and realized there was a problem, the 30 day return policy had expired. I am waiting to see what the seller, Etronics, does for me.

Etronics agreed to replace the unit and I shipped it back at my cost ($45). USPS says it arrived at their location 4/16/07 after I mailed it on 4/13/07. I have sent numerous emails to determine the status of my replacement and today (5/14/07) I get an email from them saying the unit was destroyed and I need to file a claim with USPS. Unbelievable. So now I have to fight the Post Office to recoup my insurance money in addition to the money I have already spent for the cd playaer and shipping the unit back to Etronics. What ever happened to customer service? Needless to say I am not happy and won't be doing business in the near future with Etronics.

Etronics shipped the unit back to me and I filed a claim with USPS for the insurance I purchased. Etronics also offered a $50 refund for all my trouble, but ONLY if I removed this negative review. I told them I wasn't sure if it was worth $50 considering all the aggravation and lack of customer service. I decided it isn't worth $50 to remove this review and let Etronics off the hook. If they want me to remove this negative review then they can refund my money. Thank goodness they are not the only company out there doing business.

[+] 10.0 Great CD Changer
I have read some of the reviews and this is the reason I'm Writing this. I purchased two of these units almost 3 years ago and they have operated flawlessly for me. I have them connect together and with the no-delay feature there is no gap in the music. As soon as a song ends in one CD deck another song starts in the other. I have about 390 CD's in each unit. During the christmas holidays they are full, 400 each. The reason I take the christmas CD's out is sometimes I like to play both units on full random, all disc, shuffle. And who wants Christmas music all year long. Both units operate as advertised. So if you are like me and couldn't decide which CD's to put in a smaller CD changer (I had a 5 Disc changer), or though of another CD you wanted to hear. Now the problem is solved, I have access to 800 CD's.

[+] 2.0 Similar problems to Andy Rosenblum
I had been having difficulties with my Sony CDPCX455 as well, everything from odd misloads to discs skipping, and decided to inspect all of my discs. This thing has, so far, damaged about 25% of my collection significantly, and left another 40% or so with mild to moderate scuffs and scratches. I know for a fact that these were inflicted by the player itself, as I am an audiophile and extremely meticulous about handling my discs. I will not be buying Sony again, this is the last straw, and if I could sue them for the damages, I absolutely would. Buyer beware of this extremely faulty product.

[+] 10.0 400 Disc CD Changer
This is a perfect answer to the typical CD storage problem. This unit replaces a previous 100 CD changer and is basically the same size. It works well and the remote makes using it even easier. Controls and instructions are a little difficult to understand, but the overall concepts are the same as other similar units. I would recommend this for those who cannot store all their CD's in a reasonable manner and are a little too lazy to insert them one at a time for playing.

[+] 10.0 Great CD Player and Transaction!
Previously I'd purchased from E-Bay a "used" Sony 300-disk player for a fair price. It worked rather well for several months and then all sorts of problems arose and I couldn't even use it. I purchased this unit brand-new and have enjoyed listening to my music once more, with the bonus of having 100-disk extra capacity.

One thing I don't like about this unit that's different from the 300-disk player is its ability to easily categorize music into 8 fields. It's a little more tricky to perform and the manual is not all that clear on how to do it. A small issue that I've since conquered and now can "All Discs-Shuffle" within a category now that it's all setup.

The quality is fantastic and have not had even one slight issue in the 2-months that I've owned it. It gets daily playtime and seems a great unit.

[+] 4.0 Sony CD400 CDP-CX400
Had this model above for 5 years. Started skipping during playing any CD ..not scratched. My CX300 model is 8 years old, and works great. When you check the sony site for service, if not under warranty, it's about 195 bucks for an exchange, and 122 for service.

I sure would like to know what's the problem with these? Don't exchange! Buy a new one for about 220, and smash the old one....make sure you video it and post on YouTube!

[+] 8.0 Sony CDPCX455 400 Disc MegaStorage CD Changer
I had great hope for this product. It has, mostly, so far, lived up to my expectations. Here are some caveats...

I was hoping for the ability to set up music catagories...easy listening, dinner music, light jazz...etc. You have to "cheat" to do this, and using the manual is daunting. Instead of using the "Artist" as artist, I used it as a catagory code, ie making one artist light jazz, etc. This works, but you do, of course lose the artist registration ability.

So now, I can select "artist" "Dinner Music" and then "All Discs" and "Shuffle", and the unit will play a track from one "Dinner Music" CD then shuffle to another track on another "Dinner Music" CD, etc, making a delightful, mix of music that never is repeated exactly the same way.

I am still in the loading phase of coexistance with this machine, so longetivty, and flawlessness are not being reviewed here. That remains to be seen.

The manual is purely awfull. Just dig in and try things. That's the only way to get a handle on things. Hope this helps....good luck!

My wife has never been happier than to have all 375 of my discs in one small spot. It is so easy to change discs. I highly recommend this changer.

[+] 8.0 "The Last of the Mohicans"
Sony is the only one I could find with a mass storage CD player but that's okay since I was replacing an 8 year old Sony mass storage unit. Unfortunately, the first one AMAZON sent me was defective. They could not have treated the situation better though. They immediately sent out a replacement and had UPS pick up the defective unit. The replacement works great. Sony could improve this unit a lot by having the "store bought" CD's display individual song titles. That is done on the MP3 copies that you install into the unit. Other than that, I find the unit just what I need. The MP3 capability is the biggest single improvement over the old unit I had. It takes a lot of time to convert a bunch of CD's to one but that's not the unit's fault and it's well worth the effort for the sake of increasing storage capacity.

Mega storage units are great in preventing CD handling and keeping the music where it's intended; in the player. with hundred's of album choices it's quick to find the ones you want to hear. Plays and operates wonderfully. This is my 3rd Sony Mega purchase (as well as a JVC some years ago) and although it's like a giant MP3, I find it to be exactly what I need for all of the CD's I collect and listen to.

This unit is just what I needed. It has performed flawlessly and is easy to program, i.e., disc names/genres. I plan on purchasing a 400 disc DVD player by Sony in the near future. You can't go wrong with this CD Changer.
