Sony DVP-FX820 8-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black

I read the reviews, and saw that many reported poor sound or low quality sound. Perhaps mine is a newer model (2009), but I think the sound is very good, and plenty loud for my use. I have been pleased with the picture quality as well. I would agree that the battery life could be better, but you recieve an AC as well as vehicle power point chargers with the DVD player.

Always been a Sony fan and this DVD player reminds me why. Great picture quality and sound quality too. The icing on the cake was being upgraded to a 9" screen from the expected 8" unit. Thanks for that!!!

I love Sony products, but this one I got for my 2 years old daughter, It's small but very heavy for a 2 years old. One thing I dislike about this portable DVD player is it can NOT play copied DVDs, it's only play original DVDs. So if you have couple copied DVDs, this DVD player won't work!

we use it occasionally as an extra dvd player with the TV and used it once on a trip. Have not had any problems yet. it even plays my burnt DVDs

Love the dvd player but the battery did not last very long and costs $100 to replace. We have only had it a year and now I have to buy another one.

Battery life is as advertised. Screen resolution is fantastic. Easy to use and worth the extra dollars over cheaper, less-featured brands. Sony makes a quality product.

I bought this player for personal use and really like the red color. Soon after I bought it, I traveled from Houston to north of Dallas with my 21 month old grandson. He had just started watching DVDs like Thomas and Barney, so we brought it with us. Made the trip much less boring for him. I tried to find one of the holders to attach it to the back of the seats, but was unsuccessful in finding one that worked well in my car. So, we put it on the console between the seats. It worked well. We used it again for a trip this past week (he's 2 now) and my daughter commented on how it never skips. She also took it with them on a trip they took on a cruise. She said it really helped when he just needed some quiet, wind-down time. I would also add that it is very easy to use. The 2 year old knows how to open it and put in the disc. Not real good at starting it with the "mote" but I'm sure he will be doing that soon. Oh yes, the one thing I wish it had was a way to start it on the player without the remote. It's about the only thing you can't do. Minor inconvenience, but since you usually sit close to it, it would be nice to not have to get the remote out. I don't think I'm going to get my player back.

Like a small Bravia- the screen looks 3D. Watched Lord Of The Rings and it was the best picture we've seen. Better than the home tv's. Easy to work and a great product for the money.

Bought this for a cross-country road trip with our 2-year-old daughter who loves Disney movies. It worked great but I feel that it should be a good product for the price. I originally wanted to buy a cheaper brand but opted for this one b/c of the longer battery life. The car adapter is nice too but won't help on flights. All in all, we're happy with the product.

This a great product for the money. The video quality is excellent and the battery long lived.

As many have said, the image is beautiful on the unit. Unfortunately it doesn't play MPEG-4s, the format of many of my videos, nor accept USB drives. And the unit is quite heavy compared to a different brand I used previously. It looks sturdy, but if weight and range of formats is important, keep looking.

It has a sharper picture, better sound, and easier-to-see and reach controls than its predecessor, the DVP-FX810.

This is the perfect little DVD player. Perfect screen size and the flexiblity of the screen makes it accessible from various angles. I take it with me everywhere. It also comes with a remote and car charger that keeps you powered up on the go. And the red color is awesome!

BOUGHT THIS FOR MY GRANDSON, AFTER TRYING SEVERAL OTHERS. NO COMPARISON. THIS DVD HAS GREAT SOUND AND A BEAUTIFUL PICTURE. I HELD BACK ON MY REVIEW BECAUSE THE OTHERS TOOK A FEW WEEKS BEFORE THEY QUIT PLAYING ,OR FELL APART. HAD THIS ONE A YEAR NOW. NO PROBLEMS, COMPLETELY SATISFIED.USED IN CAR FOR TRIPS. This is a great deal for a portable dvd. The picture is excellant and the sound is ok but better with headsets. Have fun running dvds in bed and outside on a hot summer's day.

I am very satisfied. The picture is very clear. The video does not skip like my other DVD player. The screen is big enough. The sound is good. Love that one can put 2 headphones. I recommend this to everyone.

Compact, great picture, long battery life. Looked at lots of players and Sony definitely has the best features and quality. Spend a little more and get one that you'll actually enjoy. Works best with headphones.

I love the DVD player. It has an 8 inch screen, is very portable, and has a great, clean picture. I travel a lot and it's great for plane travel, just pop a DVD in and enjoy. For me, it works better than a laptop, as you can carry it in a travel bag, throw it under the seat, and pull it out at your whim, rather than jhaving to get up and access your laptop. The control panel is easy, and I love the swivel screen. It makes it easy to watch in my hotel on the bed.

I have had this product for only a few weeks but I am very happy so far. The picture is good on the actual portable dvd player and the adapatability to my TV is great - my home dvd player died, we hooked this player up and it was perfect.

Great so far. Setup was quick and easy - great picture quality - haven't checked out battery life yet, but I'm optimistic!

This is an excellent CD player! Child lock prevents little wondering hands! My daughter loves it! She will watch it while in the airport. Priceless investment. Best DVD player with great features - Sony never dissppoints!

My husband bought this player in US as a gift. The seller hasn't warned him of the fact that it would only play region 1 stuff. It is useless for EU users.

I bought this after reading the reviews. The screen is really sharp, just as others have said. I didnt think I would need the swivel part, but when using on a plane it is a must. I took this to a trip that involved a 5 plus hour plane flight and watched hours of movies. The battery life held up and the swivel screen was very handy in the cramped seats because you can swing the player portion around to slide back while the screen can be tipped back and slid back.

Works perfectly and battery life is amazing.
Only down is that you need the remote to fast forward it... You can skip scenes, but as I use it to pre-screen movies, it is slightly annoying that I need the remote for that....

I bought this as a birthday gift for my husband to use on airplanes, in particular. It's compact, has a great screen and sound...very clear and easy to use.

The battery died on the way home from a trip...guess we should have charged the battery in the hotel room. Now that we know, I{m sure there won't be any problem. He used it to listen to some CD's, too. I think the battery lasts about 6 hours.

I recently purchase this Sony DVD Player. It has an excellent picture and the sound is ok but the thing that worries me the most is the battery. I only watched 1 movie and was just about to start another one and the battery indicator light showed up. It says 6 hours battery time but I only got about 3. That is kind of disappointing. I guess the only way I can really like this player is if I always have it plugged up to the car adapter.

Awesome DVD player! The best of it: when the playing is paused then the machine goes to sleep after several minutes, saving energy. I go back after a few hours to continue watching the show when I press 'play' the movie starts exactly where it was paused before. Love it.

I bought two of these portable Sony DVD players for my Explorer. I hade an single audiovox TV/DVD player that I mounted in between the seats for my two kids but it did not work well and eventualy failed. I mounted each one on the headrest of each seat with a mounting system/carry case I bought from Walmart. It is mounted verticle taking up very little space and not in the way. They both work great. Picture is excellent and speakers deliver plenty of volume. I hooked up Gamecube to one which worked great. During a recent drive to Florida from Massachusetts, my kids had a traveling entertainment system with no complaining as they each had their own unit. ALL the dual systems in stores are made cheaply and will not deliver like this Sony unit. I did a lot of research before buying these. I am glad I paid the extra money for a quality product.

I really like this DVD player. I have had it 2 weeks now. Great sound, especially with headphones and great picture. I also get one pixel that stands out occasionally, but it seems to be random. Doesn't happen all the time.

I looked high and low for a quality DVD player. This is the best one I found. Good picture quality, good sound and really easy for the kids to use. Very happy and would buy Sony again.

DVD movies do not size well on the wide screen. So now my daughter is watching movies with two black bands on each side. If good sizing options are not built in, what is the need for a wide screen?
By the way, LG portable is lot easier to size in 3 or 4 formats, but the built quality sucks. My old one died about one year and 3 months later.

The DVD Player works really well. The picture is really good. The sound works well. I am really pleased with this purchase.

The Sony DVP-FX820 is a great product. Excellent video quality and outstanding battery life. It is also built to last. My 2yr old daughter has dropped it several times and still it operates like it's brand new.....I highly recommend this portable dvd for those who are searching for one....you won't be disappointed...

The picture quality and the sound quality are great. I like the general design and this one is slim and sleek. However, I do not like the button controls. There is no easy on/off button, which is really disappointing since I wanted to make it easy for my 4-year-old to manage herself. Now I have to be involved in helping her. The on/off switch is on the side, and it is more of a sliding function. You have to press it really hard to make it go on, and it takes several attempts before I get it right. HATE THIS. I also don't like the menu selection buttons. Again, difficult for my daughter. The last one we had was easy for her to navigate.

I also use this as a DVD player to plug directly into a TV. It was not a quick plug and play. It took me 1/2 hour to get it to work by pulling out ALL the cables to everything, replugging them in and then getting it to work somehow.

Other than the buttons and the cable situation, it's a nice unit.

I was looking for another portable dvd player with a longer battery life and I'm so glad I went with this sony one as the picture quality is outstanding. I didnt find any problem with the sound, it does not come with headphones or a carry case but as I already had acessories it was no big deal, and having a six hour battery can't be beat for the price,I have always loved sony products and have not been disappointed,my previous dvd player was a polaroid and it was okay but couldn't compare to sony!

The Sony DVP-FX820 is a truely great product! The Battery Life is exceptional as well as both the picture and sound quality. Get this item on sale since the Sony DVP-FX930 came out. It is essentially the same product but with a 9" screen.

My wife purchased this for me as a birthday gift in the fall of 2008, after doing considerable research. I used the DVP on several flights for work, and absolutely feel in love with in. This is a great looking display, and the remote works well. Battery life is pretty good as well. After my home DVD player gave up the ghost, we started using the DVPFX820 for general home use. Unfortunately, with about 60 hours on it, a horizontal line appeared in the display. Sony has offered to replace the unit with a refurbished unit (with cosmetic blemishes) instead of replacing the display. They claim the display is not covered in the warranty for parts!!! I sent it off for repair; we'll see if they keep a customer or lose one for life.

After researching many portable DVD choices, we are so pleased to have selected this one! It has everything and more. I never thought we'd need the remote, but we do. The picture quality is stunning; the screen size is perfecto; and the sound quality it superb. We scored when we selected this one. We are very happy campers! Great price too!

We drove from SF and LA for spring break. This DVD player has provided my daughters in-car entertainment for the long drive. It works great.

The picture, sound and battery life, like all of the reviewers have stated are great. overall I am pleased with the unit, so I will point out the few annoyances...

there is no way to lock the case closed, and the "open" but is on the top near the power/hold switch, so more than a few times I have accidentally popped the unit open trying to put the thing on hold so my kid didn't start pushing buttons.

The other buttons (play/ff/rew/volume) are all flush with the case. However, they are NOT membrane. Therefore, on (several) occasions, the buttons get stuck and you have to massage them to have them pop back out.

Overall you cannot beat this unit for the price. It is tiny and totally portable. (As one reviewer said, if I wanted to lug around a laptop, then I would buy a lap top).

Overall, thumbs up.

We got this DVD player so our son could watch something while we drive - he hates being in the car. It's durable, despite several drops in the car, and very ease to use right out-of-the-box.
The battery time is good and the speakers are pretty clear sounding when not used with a headset.
For the price, you can't go wrong!

We've had this player for a few weeks and used it a few times. So far, the performance has been good, as well as the durability with a 3-year old using it. The screen could be bigger, but the picture is pretty good. Wish it came with a bag or case to mount on a seatback in the car.

I purchased the Sony DVP-FX820/R 8-inch Portable DVD Player about a month ago, and it continues to amaze me with the ease of use and quality of the video -- without question the video quality is better than anything I own that is displayed on my television set.

I'm not kidding -- I can see very subtle pinstripes on a man's suit and can tell what kind of knit stitch that's on a woman's turtleneck dress without even looking for it. The video is that clear.

I certainly HIGHLY recommend this product -- I even managed to get it in my favorite color -- red -- and I know the product is available in lots of other colors as well.

I have only two criticisms -- the sound really is a bit "tinny" -- but you don't notice it much once you get "into" what you're watching. More important re a criticism is that the unit is awkward to open. The unit folds up in a very neat, compact form, about the size of a trade paperback [or slightly larger than a boxed DVD set], but there's nowhere for your fingers to go to make opening it easy. I always get it open, but it's more difficult than it should be -- and given that the unit has a plasma display, you really have to be careful not to damage the screen -- so don't use a nail file or the end of a screwdriver to try to make it easier to open.

But on the whole, I'm enjoying this product more than I have any electronic gadget I've picked up in a good many years. The pictures are always VERY crisp and clear; if you freeze the picture to get a better look at something, you never get a blurred "freeze" -- even in that mode the picture remains incredibly good.

And it's easy to tote around -- I can pick up the portable DVD unit, several boxes of DVDs, and the remote all in one hand without it being awkward at all. The battery pack hooks on to the bottom of the player, which makes it a bit heavy, but nothing to worry about -- and the battery pack remains on the player permanently, which makes recharging very simple.

The minute you turn the unit on, you get a display that shows you how much charge is left in your unit. A full charge gives you 6 hours of disc playing; to recharge all you need to do is plug in the adapter that's hooked into whatever electric outlet you choose to use, and it charges quickly and easily -- no fuss. Of course it takes longer to charge the unit initially once you've unpacked everything and hooked things up -- about a 3 minute procedure [and I'm NOT good with hooking up electronics], and it does take several hours to get a full charge the very first time.

My practice is that once I'm through viewing, I go charge the unit back up right away, and there's a handy charging light on the front of the player that tells you while it's charging [the light is on] and when it's finished [the light goes out], so it's very easy to tend to recharging while you go do something else.

Perhaps when a newer model of this unit comes out, the sound will be less tinny and there will be just a little curve on one or both sides so you'll have somewhere to anchor your fingers when you're opening the unit.

Otherwise, I recommend Sony follow a maxim that seems to [sadly] be much forgotten in recent years -- "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

So if you're looking for a portable DVD player, I don't see how you could find anything better than this Sony player. I think it's terrific!

We bought this to take with us on vacation and although we are really only using it as a dvd player and using a separate monitor for viewing, it has worked great. When using it for viewing, it looks great and the audio is great too for a portable player.

We have been using this player for about a month now.
We are happy with everything: great picture and sound quality. Picture is better than our big HDTV. I am a big fan of Sony and this was another great buy.

This is the best dvd player, the battery life alone makes it worth every penny I paid for it. The picture and sound quality are phenomonal, I look forward to be able to take this on long trips. My old portable dvd player only had a 2hr battery life to it, maybe 2 1/2. I love the lcd screen, it makes it so there is no glare whatsoever and the swivel screen is also great. D.Coughlin
