Sony DVP-NS575P/S Progressive Scan DVD Player, Silver

I used this solely as a cd player because it is very thin and takes up little space on top of the receiver. I didn't love it while it worked, it took too long to turn on and to eject a cd, sort of slow moving. But the sound was fine and really for the price it was ok. But after 3 1/2 years it just one day stopped turning on. I had to break the cover to get the cd out because it only ejects when it has electricity. So I will look for something new, not Sony, to see if something else holds up better.

I have owned this DVD player for 4 years and most of the DVDs I played on this device worked great. No skipping or other annoyance. However, after 4 years, the device is starting to skip a little during movies, and most recently could not play 2 minutes worth of video without stopping the video/audio. While the video/audio is paused, it sounds like the device is trying to read the DVD. I played the same DVD on my computer, and there were no problems at all. So, time for a new device. This time it will not be a Sony.

This player is complete trash. It lasted only three years before its main chip begins overheating and shutting down the player. Sony wants me to buy a new one???? Rubbish. I paid almost eighty USD us dollars at Best Buy for this trash and they expect me to pay them more? Whatever happend to good craftsmanship? Are they not have no pride in their products? Sony has lost me as a customer. I will not pay Sony anything anymore. Sony, you owe me.

Bought this DVD player almost two years ago. Have never had any problems with it. We use it to play DVD's that we rent and are very satisfied with the picture quality and performance.

Just like the majority of the reviews, mine died after a year of very little use. I doubt that it read 60 DVD's. It played everything I threw at it until it died. This player is ripe for a class action suit. This is worse than Sony's old "Error 13" problem. This is the last Sony product I will ever buy. The quality goes out before the name goes on. Welcome to the world of Communist China's electronics.

The picture and sound on the DVD Player are top notch, you can't argue that, but the durability is horrible. Mine lasted only 6 months and now I get a buzzing noise from the audio. My (...) magnavox has lasted almost two years.

All of my electronics are Sony, but I think I will soon be switching brands. I purchased this player in 03/05 and it lasted until 01/06. We called Sony Customer Service and were told they had a 180 day back log of repairs and that it would cost a little over $34 to repair. I can buy a brand new one for about $5 more. The same week this DVD player went out, we had a second Sony DVD player go out that was purchased in 12/03. We have a third Sony DVD player purchased in 06/99 that's running like a top.

We've had this one for about a year now, I dont use it much but it hasnt givent me any problems. I was very surprised that it also runs data discs. But it's just a basic dvd player no bells and whistles, nothing special my favorite thing about it that is silver color matches with my vcr cable box and tv. It's a good machine.

Bought this brand new from Amazon for around $79 in September 2004. Watched many movies with no problems. Then January 2006, just stopped playing DVD's. VCR's seemed to last forever, these DVD players seem to last a year or so. I've been through 2 Toshiba's, a Panasonic and now a Sony. There's gotta be a DVD player that lasts more than 2 years somewhere.

I love Sony products; however this DVD player was a big disappointment. Broke after 6 months completely! It comes with 3 months warranty, so unless you are planning to replace your DVD player after 3 months, buy another brand!

when my old rca dvd player finally quit working after six wonderful years, i received this model as a gift. beggars can't be choosers, so i definitely can't complain about the intent, but what i will complain about is the quality of this machine. the number one thing that i don't like is that it takes way too long to load a disc. hey, i'm an american. when i push a button, i expect results a lot sooner than 30 seconds later. about the buttons - these have got to be the least sensitive buttons ever created. sometimes you'll have to push a button two or three times before anything happens, and with the delayed response, you could end up turning the unit right back off as soon as it finally decides it's ready to be on. the open and close button works occasionally. you have to directly point the remote at the unit. i mean, i feel like i need to have a laser pointer and use that to line up the beam from the remote to the dvd player. it's that ridiculous.

on the good side, it's got pretty decent sound, and the picture is good enough for me. i don't have any of the fancy frills that most people take for granted, so no progressive scan or anything like that. i like the zoom feature, and i like that it turns itself off after it's been idle for a while.

overall though, this system feels cheap. the remote is flimsy and all but worthless, and the menus and screen saver look pretty medieval. serves it's purpose, but only by the bare minimum.

if you're hunting for a new dvd player, keep looking.

I used to own this model of Sony DVD player. It played DVD's and CD's well for about two to three years and gave out. I replaced it with another Sony DVD player which lasted a little under two years.

I like Sony products, but I was disappointed to see it last such a short amount of time. I also have a Panasonic DVD player which has outlasted both Sony DVD players. Just make sure you fill out the warranty in case anything goes wrong. It worked really well when it worked. So Good Luck!

The Sony DVP-S575P is my smallest and lightest midi-sized, multi-voltage (works from 110-240 V) DVD player to date. The output on this player can be considered somewhat comprehensive: 1 set of RGB out (Progressive/Normal output), 1 set of AV (Video/Left/Right) out, an S-Video out, an Optical Digital Out plus a Coaxial Digital Out. The only thing missing is a DVI output for easier connection to LCD displays.

Disc type compatibility of this DVD player is somewhat better than my older Sony DVP-NC615, which occassionally refuses to play DVD-R discs.

As with most Malaysian Sony DVD players, the DVP-NS575P plays not just Region 3 discs but also American and European imports as well. Have yet to test the player for Regions 4,5 or 6 as I don't own any titles from those countries.

The remote control however was a disappointment: Sony has appearently decided no one reads English characters anymore and have replaced almost all the words printed alongside the buttons with symbols. Also, some of the more basic controls like Disc Repeat can only be activated if you have the player connected to a TV, as there are no direct buttons on the remote to activate them.

While My Sony 5-DVD Changer DVP-NC615 has lasted over two years as my day-to-day CD changer (and still kicking), I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this new model in view of the negative reviews posted here.

Fact is that this a very good dvd player for its reliability and money. It will play any dvd I throw at it; dvd-r/rw and dvd+r/rw as well of a bunch of my cdr's. I burn every dvd I rent from netflix and I still have not ran into any problems with this dvd player,and best of all its a SONY...

This product is "cheap" and you get what you pay for in this case. Sony has made the product "cheap" enough to make having warranty service more expensive than buying another unit. Be aware that if you have problems you will probably be forced into buying a new unit. I will say that Sony customer support was great up until they gave me the bad news. Most support you would have to just assume your only option is to buy another unit!

This replaced an aged Sony DVD player which lacked DVD-R or MP-3 playback. Got this at an attractive price and even got free shipping. Performs quite well although navigating the on screen is a tad less intuitive than on the older model. It also takes a bit loinger to detect the disc type, perhaps essential to good playback. No 5.1 analog connections as I had before, just optical so until I can get the correct optical cable (didn't need this before) I cannot take advantage of the built-in DTS capabilities.

Nevertheless, I can recommend this wholeheartedly! If you burn any of your own discs, this will keep you happy!

This unit worked for about 1 hour. Then the drive failed. It doesn't even spin up. It's the second Sony failure for me (the first was their slv-350 dvd/vcr combo, which failed within one week of purchase) I've previously owned two other Sony dvd players which worked well and a toshiba portable which also works fine. But if my recent experience is any indication, Sony had better start making some good movies, because their consumer electronics division is going right down the toilet.

This player does everthing a basic DVD player needs to do with respect to playing movies. Great. However, the lack of an optical out is a bummer when hooking up the system to a nice receiver. If I burn a party mix on MP3 and want to play it, the player has no options for random or shuffle (it does on regualar CDs, but not MP3). It seems like a very simple feature to add. Nonetheless, it is a quality DVD player, I'll just have to purchase something else to play my music.

I bought this a couple of months after I got my VHS Player. This is another Sony masterpiece. Sony makes the best picture quality in any electronical devices. Progressive Scan really works with my TV and you can see the difference. I love to use this but the only problem is that the disk drive came out after 2 months of ownership. I don't think this is a disappointment though. It is well worth my money and I think I invested in something good because I know I won't be buying another one for years. I have tons of Sony products including HDTV Television sets and my television in my guest room is fifteen years old. The picture is actually really good still. It hasn't diminished one bit. This DVD Player is just like that and I know you won't be disappointed.

As say the other reviews, the picture quality is very good. But SONY once again disappoints with lack of basic features and ease of use. I am basing my comments on my $29 DVD (Entiveo) player that died. While obviously its quality was poor (and thats why it died I am sure), the software was FAR SUPERIOR to the Sony. Go figure. I wanted a unit that would last for awhile, and the Sony hopefully has the quality to last for awhile. But, I got a warranty anyways just in case!

1. The beginning interface is very confusing. It shows a screen that says DVD and CD. What the heck is that? Do I push something or what? Pop in the disk and often nothing happens. Do I hit enter, play or what? Not user friendly.

2. The player will not player "file burned" DVD's. The Entiveo, when you placed a DVD or CD burned with a Windows file system, would attempt to "play" it. For example, if you burned some plain old JPG photo files (which I burn to DVD for backup), it would just play it as a slide show - very slick. The SONY stupidly just says "cant play disk". Sheesh SONY, C'MON, get with it, ey?

3. The remote is quite confusing and unfriendly, as are most of the SONY remotes. It's simple SONY, the MOST USED BUTTONS SHOULD BE LARGER and easily found. It's confounding how such a simple concept escapes SONY. The play and FF buttons are TINY and hard to find. Try it in the dark, very tough. Look at the TIVO remote - best one ever!

On the plus side, so far it has played everything else (video that is) I have thrown at it, including my home burned DVD's in both + and - R.


I say disappoints again because I have a Sony video recorder and Sony camcorder, and a Sony TV. All have some flaws that I find annoying. All the remotes SUCK. I will be rethinking any future purchases on Sony equipment, thats for sure!

I had the exact same problem as Dan Romig (see below), and at about the same time. Bought it in July, everything fine till New Years, now it "Cannot Play Disc," no matter which disc I put in. On to another brand!

This machine is connected via component video to an InFocus X1 projector. To date, we have watched about a dozen factory DVDs and several non-factory DVDs (DVD-R and DVD+R copies) without any picture freezing or other anomalies. It produces a very sharp and color accurate signal for the X1, which is also a fine piece of equipment. With its picture enhancement features and its pricing under $100, this DVD player is a bargain.

I bought this DVD player 5 months ago. Originally I was very pleased with the product. I liked the slim, sleek design and the quality of DVD Playback was great. However, just recently and without warning, I am unable to play DVDs. I can play CDs without a problem, but when I put a DVD (I tried every DVD I own) into the player, it attempts to spin the DVD, and then an error message stating "Cannot Play Disc" scrolls across the Display of the DVD Player. For years I thought that SONY had quality products. It seems that something has changed. I will never buy another SONY. By the way, it would cost roughly half the original purchase price to ship it back to SONY for a replacement. What a waste.

This seems to be an uncommon complaint, but I have found it in a few places and wanted to reiterate it here for my fellow drive noise suffers so they know they are not crazy. I just got one of these today and the drive is loud. I mean really loud. If you want to recreate the experience of trying to watch a movie on the back of a plane this is the DVD player for you. It may only be 1 out of every 1000 players, but from the online comments I've seen, when you get a loud one, you get a loud one. And I got a loud one. It's going back tomorrow. Otherwise, I generally had the same complaints, the interface sucks and the remote is cheap and missing a few obvious buttons. It's back to the drawing board I guess.

I made the mistake of purchasing this unit without knowing that it contained a major design flaw. I own a 16:9 widescreen HDTV. Most people have 3 types of DVD's: Anamorphic Widescreen (Inhanced for 16;9 TV's, Widescreen DVD's (not set up for widescreen TV's), and 4:3 pan and scan (full screen) format. When playing the 3 different types on one DVD player you need to switch from Progressive to normal for proper playback. My last progressive scan (Philips) DVD player allowed me to do this via the onscreen menu using my remote. But this unit only has a progressive/normal switch at the back of the unit next to the cable connections. In short, when I need to switch from one to the other to accomodate the type of DVD I am using I have to pull the Sony NS575P out of my entertainment center to switch the button. I mean, it is not even on the front of the unit. Nobody buys a DVD player to have to flick buttons on the back of the machine. Nobody that is, but me. I made a big mistake in buying this thing but think twice before you do.

I use component video on this DVD player and my matching 24" Sony WEGA. The quality is superb and looks better than the movies in the theaters in the 80s and 90s.

I haven't experienced the DVD+RW problems or the 16:9 problems that others have had on this model--the latter perhaps beacause I have a matching TV.

For the money this is a great value. It's also very short and doesn't take up a whole lot of room--fits nicely underneath a VCR.

This product had great picture, almost no skips- but broke for no reason whatsoever after only six months of use. Definitely would not recommend and will not be getting another, despite the good qualities. Not dependable enough.

I have bought a lot of Sony stuff over the years. Stereo equipment, phones, computer equipment, everything. It was always high quality and very reliable. I was definitly a die-hard "sony only" person.

Lately, it seems like they've been cutting corners and this DVD player falls into that category. It seems to play DVDs fine (at least for now), but regular CD playback is static-ridden. I tested the same setup using a 10-year old sony CD player and it played beautifully. Returned the unit and got a new one-- same problem. Sony just doesnt' have the magic anymore!

player. I got the 35 series Panasonic from amazon.com a few
years ago and the Panasonics let you use a "Users" setting for
picture, but the Sony allows you only two "Dynamic" and two "Cinema" settings plus "Standard." Beware of Sony, though, they
are not the quality company of say 15-years ago (I had a 14-year
old Sony 27" that was a performance beast).Oh yes, you can get this at Walmart for $69.xx plus tax and have the option of returning it within 90-days if you are dissatisfied with it (amazon only gives you 30-days, not nearly enough time to really evaluate a product; they should reconsider at least a 60-day return plan).

do a google search on sony ch:13 and you'll find 54000+ hits on complaints about their players. Their customer servise denies the problem too.

Buyer Beware!!!

I purchased this a few days ago and installed it into my system in about 15 minutes including set up. Unlike my older DVD player this plays my DVD+R and DVD+RW disks without any problem.. Audio is fine as well. Another that it is thin and fits into a small space above another component. I have no idea how long the machine would last, but if it is like my other Sony components, it will have a long life, perhaps replaced to allow use of some new modality in the future.

Well we have had two of these same models in 2 years. Each of them quit working within a year. So we are looking for a different brand now. Good luck with this one. Worked well for a short time.

This is my second Sony DVD player. I bought the first one two years ago, and it broke within two years. I bought the second one less than two months ago, and now this one is broken, exhibiting exactly the same malady. This is clearly a defective product. What's worse is that Sony is notorious for terrible customer service, so I'm probably out another $100. I can surely say that this will be the last piece of Sony equipment I ever waste my money on. If you want a quality DVD player, you should probably look elsewhere.

Well i must say in all my time with DVD technology, there is not one brand that doesnt even compare to Sony's PICTURE QUALITY
. But Versatility wise.... thats another story . I picked up this dvd player for the DVD+RW ability, the precision picture and progressive function, and have no problems with it at all in that perspective. In fact i love this player because i pretty much use it for the DVD+RW function ... But the one thing that it is missing that some of the other players have, and i dont think Sony realizes that its pretty much the standard when it comes to video encoding... and thats (DIVX) .. yes folks be aware that this player does not play DIVX files .. so with this in mind i rate this a 4/5 ... you almost had it Sony

I bought not one but two of this units. One happened to be made in Malaysia, the other in China. My impressions are as follows:

It plays home-made DVD's, no problemo. Plus or dash RW, it works fine. Picture quality is fine. I suppose if you got a high-end DVD player, you could get even better quality, but for a low price, the unit works as intended. The screen image isn't low in contrast or low in brightness, it's just right. The remote control has enough features on it that you don't need to go fishing in the on-screen menu to do things after you've inserted a disc. There's a zoom button so thatyou can get rid of most (but not all) of the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen when watching wide-screen movies on a 4:3 TV. But one thing I don't like is that when you do use zoom, there's a bright blue symbol indicating the amount of zoom on the upper right hand corner, and it stays there continuously. I would prefer that it disappear after a few seconds, since I have 4:3 TV's and prefer zooming in so that the movie fills the screen and don't want to see that symbol. Also, when you pause or stop or FF or RW, the audio cuts out (as it should) but there's always a popping sound when the audio cuts out. Since the popping sound occurs with both of my units and they were made in two different countries, it's built into the design. The unit plays JPEG's OK, a little slow going from pic to pic even when you manually advance, but the picture quality is good, actually better in contrast and colours than my 19" Sony computer monitor.

So all in all, a good unit, but I'm still bothered by the zoom symbol being on continuously. Most people still have 4:3 TVs and the tiny sliver of a wide-screen image isn't big enough and being able to zoom in to eliminate the shadaow box doesn't need to have an always-on symbol.

it's cheap. and support a progressive scan.but can't play super audio format... if you pay more (not much).

Let me start off by saying that I didn't buy this DVD player to play burnt DVDs or SVCD, I just wanted a good DVD player to play my regular DVDs when my old Sony died. The picture quality is very impressive and I DO NOT have mine hooked up progressive scan just S-video so I am sure that progressive scan would make it that much more impressive.

Bottom Line is that if you want to play everything under the sun with progressive scan get a Phillips DVP642. If just want something to play your store bought DVDs with great picture and sound quality this model is for you.

This player DOES NOT PLAY everything you throw at it as some have claimed. For example, it's very picky about media files, takes a long time to read or doesn't play them at all. There is no support for firmware updates either and only accepts Region 1. Despite the clean picture, it's going back to the store in trade for the Philips DVP-642 I picked up also. I hate limitations, and I got to say that the Philips DOES PLAY everything you throw at it.

Sony is a quality product, but they got to get on the ball.

Probably the best low priced player on the market now. It plays all burned DVD's flawlessly. It also played all my mp3 and jpg CD-R's I made years ago. Great sound quality. If you own one of the older Sony players from the late 90's you will notice a dramatic increase in picture quality. ***UPDATE 2/9/05*** Looks like this player went to crap after 6 months! Movies keep stuttering and pausing during playback. The picture was great but it looks like the design and engineering of the electronics are crap. I change my rating to 1 star.

I have this model 1 week ago and all I can say about this player is Awesome!!. I used to have a Panasonic RV32, I can't complain, it was an excellent dvd player, but technologies are always getting better things, so, now I can watch my pictures on tv besides the mp3 music. I compare the new Panasonic S35 with the Sony one, and Sony sounds very very clear, even if you don't have an amplifier or DTS or Dolby system, only using your own TV you can create a sorround enviroment. Good purchase.

first the jvc vcr, next the daewoo tv, now it's the sony dvd.

my luck is simply amazing.

i actually got this one on accident. i told my mom to buy me the cyberhome compact dvd player, but she got me this. don't really know why since it costs almost twice the price. it works great. the "traditional" sony remote is very workwell. the power button on the front is hard to press, but i don't use the buttons on the face of anything.

with my luck as good as this, what's next?

The good thing about this player is good sound quality,good clean picture but the bad thing is about every 4 hours the picture fades from light to dark for about 5 min.In order to fix this problem,just turn your tv and your player off for about 30 sec.Then u could get back to your movie,cd,etc.Sony is normaly a high-quality brand except for this player.i hope this review helps!

The player worked well for two weeks and then discs began to stall and skip. Repeated cleaning of the player and discs did not work. The picture quality on the Sony is below average when compared with the replacement. There were high levels of pixelation on my 27 inch TV even with RCA cables. For this price range, I recommend the Philips DVP642 which I bought to replace the Sony.

I love my Sony TV and VCR, but I would recommend against their DVD players until they get their manufacturing processes in order.

Got this player almost a month ago. It had been excellent. The Best picture quality I have ever seen with a DVD Player. The buttons are way to small and hard to push especially the power button. I was ready to give this player 5 stars until last night while watching a new DVD. The player about half way through the movie the drive started making a funny noise kind of like the sound it makes when it starts reading the disk before it plays. The picture just stop but recovered quickly. I was shocked! It did this every 5 to 10 minutes for the rest of the movie.What a huge disappointment! I really liked this player. Hands down the Best picture quality but skipping on brand new DVDs, NOT COOL! This player is going back.

I bought this DVD player because my old Zenith unit have difficulties reading the DVD's I burn on my computer. Sometimes, it skips some images and it is slow in the beginning of playback. I tought that a new unit with all the new technologies would help. Not at all !
This DVD player can play all my commercial DVD's... but when I put any of my own DVD's, it only return me the message "C 13 70 - the disk is dirty"... even on a brand new burned DVD fresh out of my computer... At first, I tought that it was my burner... So I put my DVD in my neighbor player: no problems. I tried it in my old Zenith: no problem. I put it in the new Sony unit: "C 13 70..."
Believe me, I'm a big Sony fan. My video cam is a Sony; my computer is a Sony; the burner in my computer is a Sony; my TV set is a Sony; even my telephone is a Sony... But all I could say is DON'T BUY THIS DVD PLAYER ! It is a big disapointment for me...

once again another sony dvd player with a superdark picture and all this precision drive 3 talk yet it skipped on 3 brand new dvd movies! and ive owned it 1 day lmao im very dissapointed this dvd player seems to be no better than the 40 dollar skip master by cyberhome its got a dark picture it skips on many dvds and its slow to load the movie and i know its not just me ive come to the conclusion sony makes junk on purpose to inflate sales numbers sony was accused by capcoms president of making playstation 2s with bad dvd drives so people would buy another and inflate there sales number i thought it was a joke until 3 of my playstion 2s all died my buddys sony dvd player had an awful dark pictures with ghosts and lines in the picture then it did 1 week later BEWARE THIS PILE OF JUNK HOMER SIMPSON COULD MAKE A BETTER DVD PLAYER WITH BOLOGNE AND BREAD

I've had this player for about a week now and am reasonably happy with it. I bought this player to replace my 3 year old Sony DVD player that couldn't read my burned DVD-R or DVD+R media.

Not a problem with this unit -- I've thrown DVD+R, DVD-R, and DVD+RW disks at it and it's had no issues whatsoever, nor has it had any problems reading the several Netflix rental DVDs I've thrown at it. So far, so good.

The picture on my 4:3 tube TV is excellent, as you'd expect, although it seems slightly darker than what I'm accustomed to, even after fiddling with the various cinema modes.

Startup time to read DVDs is definitely longer than with my 3 year old player although if it buys you the ability to read almost any disk format, it's not a big deal if you have to wait 10-15 seconds to get started.

The multi-disk memory is an excellent feature, allowing you to remove a disk and play others and when you put the disk back in, the player will take you right back to where you left off.

The only disappointment so far is that when presented with a moving, intricate picture with fine lines, the lines tend to 'wiggle' as the picture moves. (This is noticeable in the rails and fine lines of the buildings in the opening of Mystic River as the camera pans across them). My 3 year old Sony did NOT have this issue but my understanding is that this is a very common issue with DVD players.

Given that this is an (...)$80-$90 player that will do progressive video (which I'm not using yet) and seems to be happy with whatever media you throw at it, I'd suggest giving it a shot.

October 04 update -- the "wiggling lines" problem I noted in Mystic River turned out to be very unusual -- I think I've only noticed it in one other movie out of the 50 or so I've watched since writing this review. It's not a big issue.

Stay away from this product if you are buying it for use with a high-definition television. This player has the infamous "chroma bug" or "chroma upsampling error" which results in poor picture quality on a high-definition television. There is blurriness and digital artifacting around the edges of objects on the screen, and it makes movie-watching almost intolerable. The picture quality is similar to watching satellite during a storm, where the signal becomes weak and the picture beomces blocky. At first I though I just had expectations that were too high for the picture quality on HDTV, but my friend hooked up his Hitachi DVD player (it uses a Faroudja chipset) to my system and picture was beautiful..

If you're looking for a good DVD player, do some research on players which use the Faroudja/DCDi chipset. Manufacturers are using it less often these days because they want to keep prices competitive, but consumers lose out in the end. You'd think that with the booming number of HDTV sets out there that they would be more committed to making quality products, but they are not.

I bought a Sony DVP-NS575P today to replace my old Sony DVD player. It is an entry-level progressive scan DVD player and I would otherwise recommend it as a nice, easy-to-use unit except for the quality of the picture. Perhaps I just got a bad one, but the picture simply doesn't have enough contrast. Everything looks dim no matter how I adjust my television. The picture also shows lots of digital artifacts (flickering, etc.) that I find annoying. The old player and the current VCR don't have these problems, so I know it isn't my TV. Needless to say, I cannot recommend this DVD player and I will be returning mine.
