A very reliable item at a great price!
A large proportion of my viewing these days involves discs of my own creation. Unfortunately my older generation Sony DVD player was either unable to read those discs at all or the discs would freeze at some point and then refuse to be played further.
Considering that my older player had cost much more than this newer one I was fearful that I might be wasting my money; nevertheless, I did like the fact that it had the ability to play mp3s and jpeg files, which my older unit did not, so I decided to take a chance.
Setting up the unit was a breeze. After two months of use, I can honestly say that I have never had a single disc rejected as being unplayable or even had one freeze during play. Unlike what I have read from some other reviewers I don't think that the unit takes too long to perform an initial read of a disc. I simply insert a disc and usually by the time that I have walked back to the couch and gotten comfortable, it is ready to play.
All in all, I would say that I am very pleased with this unit and the price for a "name" brand is hard to beat!
This unit works fine and is a snap to set up. It has the ability to start in the middle of a program. I would recommend it highly

GOOD UNIT, POORLY DESIGNED/MADE REMOTE
Yes the ability of this unit to read/play imperfect discs is better than most, but the design, programing and functioning of the remote is poor at best. To start, the buttons on the unit are too small and are in the wrong/less than convenient positioning. The keys function slowly/poorly. The actual programming is reqiures too many steps to effect desired actions such as slow play requires hitting of pause then then slow rather than just pressing slow key to effect desired reduced speed. The .6 slow play is unique and liked.

Great little DVD player!
We are extremely pleased with the Sony DVD player. It is a great little DVD player-we are using it in the master bedroom and it is a very sleek looking player with all the features we need for a spare DVD. The price was certainly a great feature!!
As with almost anything you buy, you get what you pay for. Sure, you can buy a less-expensive DVD player but it won't be a Sony. And the remote integrates nicely with my Sony TV so it doesn't add another remote to the many that I already have. Needless to say, the product was easy to set up and works great. Nuff said.

Insufficient output options
I purchased this unit because it was a Sony, and a replacment for an older unit that died.
When it arrived it did not have S-video output, or optical audio output for Dolby 5.1.
I was able to swap it for another unit in the house but now my big screen equipment does not match, and the RCA unit is not fully controllable by the Sony Remote Commander.
No big deal, but it would have been nice to have a description of the output options in the product description.
The more expensive models had some "new" type of output that my 60' TV does not support.
I bought two of those in different times, both of them worked fine and reliable, I would recommend it to others

Good but not great. Good price, though!
This unit wasn't expensive so I gave it a try. As other reviewers have mentioned, it is annoyingly slow to boot up, read a disc, and start playing. The other really annoying "feature" is that there is no eject button on the front of the unit. So, if you walk up to your entertainment center with a DVD, you can't open the tray. You have to walk back to the couch, find the remote, and open the tray. Then you can go put in a disc. Then you need the remote again to close the tray (a gentle push on the tray will NOT close it!) Seems like a simple thing I took for granted with my previous players, but now it's kind of annoying on this one. I guess I'll get used to it some day and remember to just pick up the remote before I get up to put in a DVD, but I haven't yet. Still worth it for only $50, but I wish they had added this simple feature.

Great for the price!
A standard DVD player, for a great price. I bought this because my room needed one, and we just wanted something simple, good, and cheap. It plays the dvd's I bought and has good picture quality. Really simple to use, and comes in silver or black.

Great inexpensive DVD player
I got this unit as an "open box" on amazon, and it has pleased us in every way.
Is it a high end blue ray player? No, but we sure didn't pay for one.
The remote works great, and it interfaced w/o issue with our Sony TV. Unexpected bonus.

For the price Excellent
i twont play all dvd types but its ok, soo far it hasn't played only one dvd out of 40 (more or less)... i'll say it's a fair price for an acceptable DVD player
Player has worked well since we got it; it's a little slow, but still more than adequate. Picture quality is very good as well.
This is a great DVD, we use it on the job to show training information.
works like it should. no sleep function. zoom buttons and slow motion with sound button. good features. slow loading, but no problems once it's running.
good for a cheap dvd player. might be worth spending more on a better version.
I got this one after our old one bit the dust !(I never liked it). I did a lot of research for specific functions, this one fits the bill the most. Easy buttons, fast forward without the chance of advancing the screen, more than one fast forward speed, subtitle button, my son can operate it without help from me. So far, this is one of the dvd players I ever owned.

Poor user interface
I would never buy this DVD player again, even if it were only $10. The buttons on this player are very slow to respond. Sometimes I'll press the power button and it doesn't even turn on. I often have to hit a button 2 or 3 times before it works, this goes for all buttons, power, eject, etc. There is a definite lag between button depress and response --- this may not seem like that big of a deal but it really is extremely annoying. This player also will not turn off automatically. I've had previous players that will automatically power down x amount of minutes after a CD or DVD ends, not this one, it stays on, wasting energy until you manually turn it off. (And remember, you may have to hit that off button twice...)

Works just great
Just close to having this new player for three months and I have been nothing but pleased with it's performance. I watch lots and lots of movies and most of them are rentals. My old player was having a real hard time playing beat up/scratched rental disks. So, the main thing I wanted with a new player was for it to be able to read these badly scratched disks. Mission accomplished. I have not had one solitary problem with any disk I have placed in this player, and I have put some real scratched up disks in it. No problem. If I can get another year or two of playing perfection out of this machine, I will be very pleased. I highly recommend this player. The price is just excellent, also.

I love this DVD player!
I have a small hdtv in my room upstairs. Normally, I watch DVDs on my laptop since I only watch during the weekends. However, I get tired of loading up the computer just to watch a movie. So I decided to get a cheap dvd player that can play at 480P. I got this model.
There are several good things and bad things about this player. Most of the complaint though, will probably not apply to everyone:
* The player is outstanding. It plays my scratched dvd fairly well.
* It comes with cables only for the sdtv, not hdtv. I had to spend an extra 20 bucks to get the cables for an hdtv. I am not very happy about that.
* No Closed Caption on hdtv. I'm not exactly sure if Closed Captioning is disabled for all HDTV or if this is the fault of my TV not allowing closed captioning on HDTV or if it's the fault of this dvd player. So I won't hold it against the player but instead warn users who wish to get a player for their hdtv. I know I can enable caption when I use the SDTV line, but when I got the HDTV line, I could no longer view close caption and have to rely on subtitles which may or may not be presented on dvds. It's a minor inconvenience, but I guess I just have to turn up the tv and hope people in the house don't get annoyed.
Overall, good dvd player. I will enjoy a lot of great movies upstairs in my room while others in my house hold don't have to worry about me taking up the main tv. Very good, cheap, and easy to use.
I recently purchased a $29 Magnavox and then tried to play a used copy of Rush in Rio on it. The sound was so horrible I ended up taking it back and trading up for this Sony. It has a lot more audio options than the Magnavox, or should I say, it HAS audio options! lol The sound and picture are phenomenal on my standard TV with stereo sound. I've only had it one day but the reviews here are good and I anticipate it will easily meet my needs. If it plays that Rush DVD it should play anything.

Ideal for 480p Res or less
Pros
Sony has no trouble playing problem disks that plagued my other players. But, it also doesn't play a few disks my other players struggle to play.
Sony menu functions are very well integrated compared to the hodge-podge look of lesser brands making it easier to use this player without reading a manual.
Installation is very easy. Plug the cables depending on what you use, component video, digital or line-outs. The power cable is not removable. There is no HDMI jack, since its maximum resolution is 480p via component video.
The case is all black, with 4 buttons difficult to see against the black case. The DVD tray opens slower, but is quieter when it runs. The ELD display is far clearer and more informative about the status of the disk or the chapter playing.
Images, sharpness and colors are superb on default settings. Sony includes manual or preset image adjustments to maximize its output.
When powered ON, the Sony will resume playback from whence you stopped for up to 6 separate disks.
It has has on/off and volume control for TVs in the DVD remote.
Variable play from 1.4x to 0.5x speed, but with sound.
Sony has sound function that takes the basic output of 2 speakers and tries to emulate surround sound.
Sony will create thumbnails of each DVD chapter independent of the DVD menus. This helps quite a bit in home made DVDs that have no menus.
Cons:
Remote is well laid out, with similar function buttons set near each other but in opposite directions for opposite functions, i.e., rewind left, forward, right. However, like many el-cheapo DVD players, the buttons are too small and one cannot differentiate functions purely by feel. You have to gaze at the buttons to read the function.
All advanced functions are controlled by the remote, so its indispensable.
Conclusion:
480p quality is good enough to appreciate on 32" or less HDTV sets until you upgrade to a 46" and over 1080p DVD player. Although Sony explicitly mentions it has support for copy protection schemes built right into the data [ e.g. the video file or image, not just the disk], I have not yet encountered data that would not play.
This is a great product if you're looking for a DVD player that gives you crisp & clear picture. I invited my family over for a day of movies & all were impressed with this Sony DVD player.
This was reputed to play beat up Netflix discs better than others. I've only had a couple of skips and not refusals to play since I started using it. It indeed plays discs that will gag my old Phillips player. I don't see a difference in picture quality.
For a reasonable price, our Sony DVP-NS57P/B Progressive-Scan DVD Player is a fine DVD player. Let's just hope that it lasts longer than our previous DVD player or at least until we move up to a high definition unit.

Good stop-gap until blu-ray comes down
I got this player when my panasonic spindle motor died (new motor $35, and I'd have to install it versus new player for $50). Does everything it is suppose to do, but you have to use the remote to bounce around cd tracks. I haven't tried the jpeg feature yet. It is odd that it does not have an optical digital hook up, but the coax digital works fine (cable not included).
So for $50 this is a good stop gap with many features until Blu-ray players reach a reasonable price.

Sony unit is a great price for excellent quality
I was looking for a good quality DVD player selling at a good price. Did I get a real winner. The Sony DVP-NS57P/B Progressive Scan DVD Player was perfect. Amazon's delivery was flawless and the unit was easy to set-up and worked like a charm. I do not yet have a wide/flat screen TV, so I didn't want to invest a lot of money in case the unit would not be compatible. I have used it for several weeks without a problem - just three clicks and the money is up and running. And, the slow fast forward is new for me and allows you to see the action not simply jump to the next section. At $50 this is a steal.
Just bought this player and it might be fine but it doesn't have the TOS link that is mentioned in the specifications so we need to send it back :(

It's ok I guess (Sony DVP-NS57P/B Progressive Scan DVD Player
Seems to play anything I put in it (regardless of how badly it may be scratched up), so no complaints there. Not sure if all the dvd's only play in widescreen (which I hate) but so far not a one has played in fullscreen. Have tried all different configurations in the menu...maybe it's the dvd's themselves. Not a bad buy for $50 though. It'll hold me over until I'm ready to shell out some real cash for an upgrade. Overall, I like it.

Very Disappointed, false advertising
We bought this DVD player because its advertised as being a Multi Region DVD player and even on the Amazon site it sais it plays NTSC and PAL.
Well... it doesnt.. it is a Region 1 DVD player only, PAL is not being played in this.
What a waste of time and money!
Save up your money for a better player.
This machine wouldn't play a disc with a hairline scratch on it. I was getting fed up with this machine BEFORE it broke.
Then it broke.
I hit the eject button to open the tray, I heard a click, then what sounded like the motor slowing down, then a loud POP.
The track broke off of the tray because the teeth on the gear and the track were misaligned. I called Sony to see if I could just buy a new optical drive, and I could, but it would cost $90.. I was like "The drive costs more than the player?" and they were like "yes"
Needless to say I have a new DVD Player now. And its much nicer.
Save up for something above $60.. you won't regret it.

The Sony DVD player works fine out of the box. I have had a few low end DVD players and they all start out OK but stop working fairly quickly. The Sony has been going for a while now with now problems. It is simple and elegant, stands up to kids and plays clear DVDs. What more c ould you ask?

We bought the sony because our Toshiba couldn't read any of the new DVD's and our Toshiba wasn't that old. Great player for the $$$
If you are looking for an inexpensive player, this is a great choice. After buying an off brand at a nationwide store, which broke after three plays, I bought this DVD player from Sony on Amazon and it works just fine. Standard shipping was fast and obviously the DVD player arrived in excellent condition.
This unit works well. I am simply using it to play workout videos, nothing more. It has a slim/sleek design, so if space is an issue for you, this unit is ideal.
If you are looking to build a state-of-the-art home theatre system, you will need a DVD player with more inputs/outputs. Of course, I would recommend the Sony Blu-Ray DVD player. I do have this player and it is amazing with a high def plasma or LCD (1080P) TV. But, I digress, since I am not reviewing the Blu-ray unit.
In short, if you are looking for a basic DVD player just to watch standard definition movies on, this unit will work just fine.
Looks great, easy to use, very inexpensive.
I'll probably pick up another for another room.
Product was received in a very timely manner and I have spent many hours enjoying my dvds on it.

Best I've found for scratched DVD's and DVD+/-R
My DVD player was several years old, and wouldn't play scratched DVD's, and frequently choked on my home-burned DVD's. After reading all the reviews about how well this model handles less-than-perfect DVD's and DVD-R/DVD+R, I bought this model.
I'm happy to report that this player doesn't miss a beat. It has successfully read ALL my scratched DVD's and home-made DVD's that my old player didn't like, without a single hiccup. I also have another decent DVD player that would choke on only 4 of my DVD/R's, and all 4 of those work perfectly in the Sony also.
If you use NetFlix, this is a great player since many of their DVD's are scratched by previous renters.
This is a great value for the money - since it plays all the DVD's that other players have problems with, it would still be a good deal if it cost twice as much. It doesn't have an S-video output, but it does have component output, which is better video quality than S-video anyway. One correction to a prior review - someone said this unit is not made in China - maybe that was true last year, but the new ones are made in China. It's hard to find ANYTHING which isn't made in China any more; as long as the manufacturer maintains quality control over it's products, it really doesn't matter in what country they place their factory.

Nearly Perfect DVD Player - Great Price!
I recently replaced my original DVD Player from July 1998, which cost me nearly $800 at the time. The price of the SONY DVP-NS57P/B Progressive Scan DVD Player is the first nice thing about it -- $55.00 -- sweet!
This player plays ALL of the DVD formatted discs I have that could not be played on the original player, which had been moved to my bedroom, following other DVD Player purchases, such as an ALL-REGION PAL-NTSC PLAYER, which I had purchased as an after-market mod.
This SONY unit plays CD's, CD-R's, CD-RW's, MP3 CD's, DVD's, DVD-R, MP3 DVD, and quite a few others.
This is a fantastic unit, especially considering the low price. This price show how ubiquitous the DVD has become in our media saturated society.
The remote is well laid out, and easy to use.
However, there is one thing about this player that I DO NOT like (although not enough to return it) and that is the on-screen menu system. It looks like SONY tried to keep this as simple as possible, but in doing so, they lost some menu features, which mostly deal with the time coding of the currently playing disc.
There are just not enough options and settings, as compared to the other players I have in my home, including the ones in my Apple Computer.
But, this small insufficiency was only enough for me to drop one star in my rating, as everything else is just so damn excellent.

I love this product! We had gotten a copy of a CD made by a friend for our parents for xmas of old pictures that we played once on our old DVD player. After that it was always distorted and would stop in several places. When I got this product, that was the first thing I tried playing in it. It played all the way through without one single thing wrong. I love it! The price is what got me to buy it, but next time I need another DVD player, this is the first place I'll go to get it.

Good choice, great value for the price.
NOTE: This review is a copy&paste of my review for the 2005 SKU/model/version of this player ... Sony DVPNS50P. After that it became the "55" model before this year when it became the "57" model.
DECEMBER 2005: I have only had this item for about three weeks or so. I am hoping that it "holds up" over time, unlike a lot of other DVD players on the market that apparently fail so quickly they are practically disposable in nature.
The "pros" on this item (so far) are:
* sleek, slim, uncluttered look of the unit
* comes in either black or silver, so you can match it up to your other devices.
* easy set up. There's a electrical plug, trip-RCA jacks and an S-video jack. Hook-up is a snap. Hardware-wise, the device, then, is really uncluttered.
* seems to be a good deal for the price.
The "cons" (so far) are:
* as said elsewhere by other reviewers... it IS slow. Slow to boot a disc. Slow to re-start a disc that has been stopped. Just slow.
* the display readout on the front of the box. It scrolls words like "welcome," "open" "close" and "no text." The firmware engineer was apparently out to lunch on this one. There's not even a clock display. It will display the time the DVD has played, thank goodness.
*the on-screen menu is pretty lame. Must have been the same engineer. The menu choices are only displayed as cryptic graphics, and the choices for each graphic are brief and uninformative (as in "on, off, auto" or similar types of statements). You will absolutely have to work through the manual to figure it out. And you won't find a lot of useful functionality after you do. It is a pretty bare-bones box.
* The remote control could use a good bit of improvement. The text is large enough to read ... but the buttons barely protrude from the face. You have to grasp this thing firmly, get your finger right on the button and apply a good bit of pressure to score. And a lot of the buttons can't be pushed while the thing is sitting on the coffee table ... the back of the device is beveled at the top, so if you press on the buttons near the top -- common usage buttons like TV on/off, box on/off and open/close -- while it is sitting on a level surface, the thing just flips up in the air. And the range is horrid. It can't handle getting its signal over the edge of my coffee table three feet away from the box. You've got to pick it up and aim it directly at the device if you want the box to respond. There's no facilitation for using the remote at night (no glow in the dark, backlighting, light-through, etc.) AND the remote came in silver. Who at Sony thought that I would want a silver remote if I bought a black box? Was molding cases for the remote in two different colors too big a challenge for them ... or did it just make it easier for Sony to manage its inventory?
* The box has already told me "no disc" incorrectly a couple of times. Jogging it opened and closed resolved the issue. Either the tray is not designed to align the disc 100% when inserted ... or this is an indication the device is going to have read problems down the road. Time will tell.
Still, IF it is quality, IF it is durable, then it's worth what I paid for it.
UPDATE: September, 2006. After owning one for almost a year ... and buying two more this summer ... I can still recommend this unit. Every once in a great while, it gets confused enough so that I have to unplug it from the wall to "reboot it." It has tracked flawlessly on almost every DVD ... just a freeze here and there on some heavily used Netflix rentals. I do not see any evidence of dual-layer freezing.
UPDATE December, 2007. All three units still working fine and still recommended.
NOTE: The "57" does NOT have S-video input; the "50" does. I replaced the remotes with a Sony RM-VL600 'trainable' remote. $20 and well worth it. Check it out.
I purchased this because of other reviews that said it played scratched DVD's and much to my amazement it does. My favorite one (The Right Stuff) is scratched at frames 18 and 23 and always paused there with my old Sony player. This one didn't skip a beat and played the entire DVD without a skip.
Great unit.

With the sole exception of NOT being DIVX compatible, this DVD perfectly met all my other needs and was under $50 too. The remote has nice buttons that stick up good and are found by ease with my fat fingers. Quality is good, with the sole exception that if you don't have the remote good luck using the buttons on the machine they are poorly labeled, flush set, and almost impossible to find. In my opinion they should have labeled them much better and made the buttons easier to press because lets face it, everyone loses their remote sooner or later.
