Product Specifications

The DVP-NS57P/S DVD player features Precision Cinema Progressive technology, providing sharper images for a better viewing experience. Unlike other DVD players that detect image changes atthe Scan line level-Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects them at the Pixel level. This results in images closer to the original source data, because separate, optimized algorithms are used to handle the differing Pixel behavior. Separate algorithms are also used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are free from motion artifacts. Sony's Precision Drive III mechanism is also included, which helps maximize the performance of DVD collections by reading data even on some physically "warped" discs. Other benefits include fast/slow playback with sound, and custom parental control.
  • Dolby® Digital Decoding Compatible
  • Multi Brand TV Remote Control*
  • Multi-Disc Resume -6 disc
  • Precision Drive, 3 System For Flaws in DVD Discs
  • Precision Drive¿ 3 System For Flaws in DVD Discs
  • Progressive Output (480p)

[+] 6.0 Disposable DVD player
This DVD player works great while it is working. The price is a good indication of it's true quality.

Mine failed after exactly one year and three days.

Treat this one as disposable.

[+] 4.0 Spend the extra 25 dollars for the more expensive sony dvd player
The player arrived with the dvd in the open position and it would not work when hooked up. The workmanship is pretty shoddy. I returned it to amazon and got a full refund. I then purchased the upconverting dvd by sony on amazon and am very pleased with the quality and the picture.

[+] 10.0 High Quality Low Price
I could not be more satisfied with this DVD Player. I admit that I had rather low expectations due to the price. I've owned a couple of DVD players in this price range and they were simply mediocre but I needed a DVD player for my office and didn't see a need for anything too high end. Boy, was I surprised when hooked this baby up!

This is where I have my biggest complaint - the lack of video cables. I received a set of audio cable (the traditional red/white ones) but there was nothing in the box for video! Whether this was intended or not, it was very frustrating. If this was intentional, why not throw in at least a simple yellow composite cable? Otherwise, why include any cables at all? I ended up digging around and I was able to find some old component cables.

Once you have it all hooked up, however, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. The picture quality greatly surpasses any DVD player with similar features in this price range. There's no noticeable blurring during frantic action scenes unlike similarly priced DVD players. Colors are bright and vivid. Sound quality is excellent

This is a high quality unit that greatly surpassed my expectations. I don't think you could find anything remotely close to it in this price range. Build quality is high, whisper quiet if not silent while operating and picture quality is phenomenal.

[+] 10.0 Easy to use!
What a nice, compact easy to use player! It takes up a lot less room than my old one.

Yes, as some have said, it is a little slow in loading, but it's not that bad. The remote is quite nice! Black lettering on a light gray background is much easier to read than the reverse especially when you are looking for the pause button in a darkened room.

The price makes is all the more worth it.

[+] 2.0 Poor quality -- not living up to the Sony brand
I purchased this unit at the end of May 2008. My previous DVD player was a cheap Coby, which lasted about 2 years. I decided to pay extra for a name brand, hoping to have many years of trouble-free use. However, 3 months later, the player is no longer working. When I put a DVD in it, it spins and grinds for a few minutes then give up. I tried to contact Sony for warranty service, but I was told that they only cover labor for 3 months and parts for a year. Since I am just outside the 3-month window, I will have to pay $40 plus shipping to have it repaired. I am very disappointed at the quality of this product as well as the warranty term. Sony used to be a great brand, but I am afraid all the outsourcing(and possibly the price pressure of the competition) has forced them to cut corners in design and manufacturing.

[+] 8.0 Does the job
I bought 2 of them when I read it plays scratched and damaged dvd's since I rent allot of movies from Netflix. The only problem I had was when I want to play a dvd for the beginning it resumes where I left off then I realized I have to select stop first. My only other complaint is that the remote is large but the buttons are small otherwise I would say I'm happy with it.

[+] 10.0 sony dvd player
great product, I have had nothing but bad luck with dvd players for years. This one however is awesome, no skips, doesn't overheat, has a screan saver function, is easy to use and the price is great for a namebrand product. Highly recommend this player for anyone who just wants to sit and watch some movies with no hassles.

I haven't had this DVD player for very long, but it works perfectly. Very reasonable price. I appreciate the fact that the manufacturer included RCAs with the player. No problems yet. If I do have any problems, I'll change my review.

[+] 8.0 Tough to beat
The Sony DVP-NS57P/S DVD player turned out to be a perfect fit for our small Phillips flat screen. We just wanted to be able to watch DVDs in another room without a lot of hassle and expense. So far, so good! We set the TV right on top of the space-saving Sony DVD and the two of them take up no space at all. Performance of the player has been exemplary. And as usual, Amazon's ordering and shipping were terrific. The player arrived much sooner than expected, even choosing the free shipping option.
If you're looking for a basic, quality player from a top brand at a small price, I don't think you can go wrong.

[+] 8.0 Adequate good value

It is about time Sony figured out a way of delivering value to consumers instead of assuming the brand name allows the company to charge premium prices for mediocre goods. This DVD player is a fine unit, and delivers the functionality one needs from a secondary DVD player.

[+] 4.0 Bad Product
I bought the product because my old DVD player died. The message said it could not read any of the DVD's I put in and I tried a number of different types that is said it would play. Nothing worked. I don't know if I got a defective player or if the model is no good. On the good side, the refund was rather fast. I went to Walmart and bought a different brand instead.

[+] 10.0 Great Basic Player ~The Best For Analog TV Sets.
I got this to use in my bedroom with an old analog set that I do not plan to upgrade. I frist tried an upconverting VCR with it and the picture was all distored. My 20 yr old set needed just a regular DVD.

This DVD player is that and more. It is built well and feels quality. I have watched about 12 hours of movies now and it has worked pefrfect. It also has a lot of extra features. Like play fast and play slow with voice which can be very fun. Lots of searching modes...skip, advances, you name it and this has it.

The best thing is being albe to use and analog set with excellent picture. Hard to find one that is not upcoverting and you don't need that on a 20 year old set.

Great DVD player for the money.

[+] 10.0 Just bought my second of these
An excellent, reliable DVD player for the price. It doesn't play video files (AVI, MPG, etc.), but that's fine with me. My needs are simple, and this player meets them. It handles DVD+/-R and DVD+R DL discs as well as commercially produced DVDs, and -- a great convenience -- when I shut it off partway through a movie, it returns to that point in the movie when I turn it back on.

I now own two of these players, both going strong.

[+] 2.0 terrible
I bought this in early January 2008. For the first 3 months it has been fine, but over the last month it has progressed from freezing infrequently to not being able to play any disc at all. Now when I place a disc in the player disc it loads for about 10 minutes and then I get a message that the disc is dirty, even if the disc is brand new and absolutely pristine. It's going directly into the trash bin.

[+] 2.0 stops working
We loved this DVD player--while it lasted. It was easy to use and the sound and picture quality were both good. But after three months of fairly light use, when we tried to play anything, we got a message saying "no disc". Nothing we did to fix the problem worked. Sony offered to send us a reburbished model, which would cost $35 plus shipping, which was almost as much as it cost to begin with. Essentially the player and Sony customer support was worthless. But before we just threw the DVD player away, we thought we'd try it one more time. This time the message kept saying "cannot play disc." The tray that holds the disc is plastic and feels flimsy, which is probably the problem. So after such a short time will have to buy a new DVD player. It certainly won't be another SONY.

[+] 4.0 Buzzing noise
Purchased this player to replace an old one: after inserting a DVD and the image appeared, wherever there is high contrast there is an accompanying buzzing noise that cannot be eliminated. When the picture contrast is 'medium' or moderate, the buzz is not so apparent. I won't bother to return it because that would be more trouble than it is worth but will think twice when purchasing a second one for one of my other television locations.

[+] 6.0 Mediocre, flawed, and disappointing
Ok, so, it works. Fine. It plays DVDs, and it has taken some rough handling dished out by my two-year-old.

BUT, it claims to have a system for playing flawed discs -- granted, we get a lot of kids' DVDs from the library, but... this thing skips and freezes frequently. What's worse is that when it freezes, it JUST FREEZES -- you can't fast forward though the bad section.

AND, the buttons on the unit (since we have a two-year-old who hides remotes) only work once in a while. I'll push "play", and MAYBE it will play, maybe not. Plus, the display on the unit is so vague, that I can't tell if it's getting ready to play or not. And it's not just the one button, it's all four (power, play, stop, open) -- so I blame the design, rather than just a faulty switch.

But it works fine, as long as I use the remote and play better-than-library-quality discs. The ones from Blockbuster still have problems, but not as many.

All in all, it's disappointing for a Sony.

[+] 10.0 Very trusty dvd player!
Others have described the features well so I won't go into that myself. I'll just say that I have had this dvd player for 9 months and have put it through heavy-duty usage (at least 5-6 dvds per week) and it has never once failed me. It even plays dvds that my other more expensive player won't! How's that for satisfaction? You won't go wrong with this workhorse, trust me.

[+] 2.0 NOT SONY Quality I've Come to Expect
I just wanted a DVD player that didn't have the HD-up garbage or a VHS player/recorder on it. Not bad for $56 BUT:

Pros:

-Picture quality is fine.
-It'll play scratched DVDs (better than new ones if that makes sense).

Cons:
-My expensive TV (27 inch) does not get Stereo from it (that makes no sense since my TV says "Stereo" if getting it automatically).
-It says "No Disc" on brand new DVDs every time. Have to open and close it for it to read it 3 or more times. Can't hear that sound when a DVD is being read at the start. The DVD tray is not level I think. My PS2 plays DVDs better than this piece of junk.
-My TV is LOUD but this player takes NO advantage of it.
-Made in China (hate to say it but every DVD player, including a $300 one, was junk from China). My friend got a same model with "Made in Japan" and works far better.
-The remote must only work with SONY TVs. My expensive JVC said, "I don't work with junk." :)

I'm returning it tomorrow to the store I bought it from since it doesn't play DVDs a lot unless you eject and close the door again and again. No stereo sound even though it says "Stereo" on the box.

If it says, "Made in Japan" it is great. If "made in China," avoid since it no better than a $29.88 cheapie at WalMart.

Hate to say it, but the $279 Sony I bought 1 1/2 years ago didn't last buy 1 year on the DVD player. The VHS works fine. I think SONY's quality is going in the toilet.

[+] 10.0 Awsome Buy
Sometimes the saying that you get what you pay for is actually true. In the age of Blue Ray and other pending technology, the dvd player will surely follow the fate of the vhs player and therefore can be bought now a days for less than thirty dollars. I payed a little more for mine, and it was so worth it. I am completely pleased and couldn't have made a better purchase.

[+] 2.0 Great price, but broke 2 wks later.
Either I bought a lemon or it's not the best product.
This DVD player just stopped working 2 weeks after purchase.

However, Sony has a decent return policy and a re-furbished one is on it's way. We'll see how this one performs, hopefully I'll be changing my review.

TIP: Spend a little more and get a step or two "better" DVD player.

[+] 10.0 SONY DVD PLAYER
This is a great price on this DVD player. I already have this same model but I bought another one from Amazon for the 2nd tv. Amazon has a much better price then what it's selling for in a popular discount store. What is really nice about this DVD player is that it "remembers" where you stopped watching the DVD, and when you turn it back on it starts at where you last stopped. It can remember up to a couple DVDs. So you could stop watching one dvd in the middle of a movie, put in another dvd and stop watching that one half way. Then go back to the first movie, and start watching that movie from where you left off. The go to the 2nd movie and start watching that where you left off. It's really great when you have more then one person who watches movies, so you don't have to fast forward to get to where they left off watching.

[+] 10.0 Best I've found for scratched DVD's and DVD+/-R
My DVD player was several years old, and wouldn't play scratched DVD's, and frequently choked on my home-burned DVD's. After reading all the reviews about how well this model handles less-than-perfect DVD's and DVD-R/DVD+R, I bought this model.

I'm happy to report that this player doesn't miss a beat. It has successfully read ALL my scratched DVD's and home-made DVD's that my old player didn't like, without a single hiccup. I also have another decent DVD player that would choke on only 4 of my DVD/R's, and all 4 of those work perfectly in the Sony also.

If you use NetFlix, this is a great player since many of their DVD's are scratched by previous renters.

This is a great value for the money - since it plays all the DVD's that other players have problems with, it would still be a good deal if it cost twice as much. It doesn't have an S-video output, but it does have component output, which is better video quality than S-video anyway. One correction to a prior review - someone said this unit is not made in China - maybe that was true last year, but the new ones are made in China. It's hard to find ANYTHING which isn't made in China any more; as long as the manufacturer maintains quality control over it's products, it really doesn't matter in what country they place their factory.

[+] 10.0 Samsung LCD HDTV, Better than expected
We are very pleased with our 52" Samsung LCD/HDTV. Our living room is very bright and we worried that the glare would be a problem. So far no problem. We haven't changed the factory settings and the colors are gorgeous, very different from our 15 yr old set. Hooked right up to comcast HD/DVD box Played a DVD on our old KLH DVD player, and the difference was noticeable but still better than on the old TV. My husband watched football all weekend... this could become a problem.

[+] 10.0 Good choice, great value for price
NOTE: This review is a copy&paste of my review for the 2005 SKU/model/version of this player ... Sony DVPNS50P. After that it became the "55" model before this year when it became the "57" model.

DECEMBER 2005: I have only had this item for about three weeks or so. I am hoping that it "holds up" over time, unlike a lot of other DVD players on the market that apparently fail so quickly they are practically disposable in nature.

The "pros" on this item (so far) are:

* sleek, slim, uncluttered look of the unit

* comes in either black or silver, so you can match it up to your other devices.

* easy set up. There's a electrical plug, trip-RCA jacks and an S-video jack. Hook-up is a snap. Hardware-wise, the device, then, is really uncluttered.

* seems to be a good deal for the price.

The "cons" (so far) are:

* as said elsewhere by other reviewers... it IS slow. Slow to boot a disc. Slow to re-start a disc that has been stopped. Just slow.

* the display readout on the front of the box. It scrolls words like "welcome," "open" "close" and "no text." The firmware engineer was apparently out to lunch on this one. There's not even a clock display. It will display the time the DVD has played, thank goodness.

*the on-screen menu is pretty lame. Must have been the same engineer. The menu choices are only displayed as cryptic graphics, and the choices for each graphic are brief and uninformative (as in "on, off, auto" or similar types of statements). You will absolutely have to work through the manual to figure it out. And you won't find a lot of useful functionality after you do. It is a pretty bare-bones box.

* The remote control could use a good bit of improvement. The text is large enough to read ... but the buttons barely protrude from the face. You have to grasp this thing firmly, get your finger right on the button and apply a good bit of pressure to score. And a lot of the buttons can't be pushed while the thing is sitting on the coffee table ... the back of the device is beveled at the top, so if you press on the buttons near the top -- common usage buttons like TV on/off, box on/off and open/close -- while it is sitting on a level surface, the thing just flips up in the air. And the range is horrid. It can't handle getting its signal over the edge of my coffee table three feet away from the box. You've got to pick it up and aim it directly at the device if you want the box to respond. There's no facilitation for using the remote at night (no glow in the dark, backlighting, light-through, etc.) AND the remote came in silver. Who at Sony thought that I would want a silver remote if I bought a black box? Was molding cases for the remote in two different colors too big a challenge for them ... or did it just make it easier for Sony to manage its inventory?

* The box has already told me "no disc" incorrectly a couple of times. Jogging it opened and closed resolved the issue. Either the tray is not designed to align the disc 100% when inserted ... or this is an indication the device is going to have read problems down the road. Time will tell.

Still, IF it is quality, IF it is durable, then it's worth what I paid for it.

UPDATE: September, 2006. After owning one for almost a year ... and buying two more this summer ... I can still recommend this unit. Every once in a great while, it gets confused enough so that I have to unplug it from the wall to "reboot it." It has tracked flawlessly on almost every DVD ... just a freeze here and there on some heavily used Netflix rentals. I do not see any evidence of dual-layer freezing.

UPDATE December, 2007. All three units still working fine and still recommended.

NOTE: The "57" does NOT have S-video input; the "50" does. I replaced the remote with a Sony RM-VL600 'trainable' remote. $20 and well worth it. Check it out.
