AVOID THIS DVD PLAYER
DO NOT BUY THIS DVD PLAYER. I HAVE HAD IT FOR 6 MONTHS. 90% OF THE TIME WHEN WE ARE WATCHING A DVD, THE PLAYER WILL EITHER STOP PLAYING COMPLETELY OR, MORE FREQUENTLY, SUDDENLY THERE WILL BE NO SOUND. I HAVE TO STOP THE PLAYER, OPEN THE DRAWER AND/OR CHANGE THE SETTING FROM NORMAL TO PROGRESSIVE AND THEN BACK TO NORMAL. THEN IT WILL PLAY AGAIN AS NORMAL. THIS HAS HAPPENED AS MANY AS FIVE TIMES DURING A 90 MINUTE DVD. SONY WANTS ME TO SEND IT IN FOR REPAIR, AT MY EXPENSE. I SAY NO, THEY SHOULD REPLACE IT OR PAY FOR ALL COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH REPAIR. NEVER ANOTHER SONY PRODUCT. EVER. BE WARNED.

Awesome picture quality & sleek looks
I bought this Sony upscaling DVD player four months ago and have used it quite a lot in this time. First, it totally outscores all other DVD players in ine aspect for sure and that is the upscaling property & picture quality. It's not as high as Blu-Ray, but it surely reaches 1080p HD quality. I was about to buy a "Samsung 1080P8 upconverting player", since it was showing as bestselling on Amazon. the after reading one review I searched for "upscaling" player and found this one.
It's black sleek looks suit my Samsung LN46A750 and a sleek mounting balck stand. It is not noisy when DVD is inside and can remember the playback time of 6 DVDs. There are a variety of audio & video options to play with. The buttons on the player are a hard to see, but then I mostly use remote, which is very sleek and easy-to-use as well.
Overall, it is a good buy at this price till Blu-Ray prices take a dive.

Sony Upscaling DVD Player
Also happy with all aspects of this purchase. Very efficient, price was great as usual, and delivery prompt.
Reasonable Price, very compact, wonderful picture quality, would recommend to those looking for a very good up scaling DVD player.
I am very happy with this purchase. I was on the fence about making the jump to Blue-ray but based on the high reviews and the fact that this player is 1/4 of the price I give this one a shot.
It may not be blue-ray quality, but this DVD player was a major improvement over my 5 year old Sony progressive scan player. The picture is noticeably more clear and the sound quality is much improved. I'm no audio/video expert, but I can say that this player produces noticeably better picture and sound from the Standard Definition DVD's in my library.
This player is great. It displays an absolutely gorgeous picture, great sound output on the HDMI. Easy setup, remote is also easy to setup.
Recommend this DVD player to anyone looking for a great unit that upconverts. I would of course say nothing beats the blu ray, but if you just want to wait for prices to come down recommend this player.
First off let me say the delivery time was amazingly fast, 3 days from order to delivery. I just received and haven't had a chance to truly review this product(why the 4 stars). I have sampled a couple of movies with the hmdi cable installed the picture quality is amazing, not sure if there would be that great of a difference spending 200-300+ dollars on a bluray. Product looks great, very sleek. Just waiting delivery of optical cable to to check sound quality through my receiver. Thank you amazon, great service once again.
This player works just great. It does a good job of upconverting. It plays my DVDs made from a video camcorder & from VHS tapes that would NOT play on a Panasonic DVD recorder that I paid almost four times as much. Make sure you read the instructions as the Sony does require setting up. No big deal but it is important. Great player for a reasonable price. I would recommend it anytime.

Great DVD as well as CD player
I am using this dvd player in my bedroom with my sony bravia tv. I am very pleased with this unit. The picture, (clear and superior quality) would make you believe it is more expensive unit. The remote is user friendly. This is a much better constructed unit than the 50 dollar sony dvd player that amazon is selling. For the extra money, this one is very well worth it.

Visual Difference
Sony DVP-NS700H/B 1080p Upscaling DVD Player. I expected some improvement over my current DVD Player, but this player made a big difference. It is giving me a clean clear picture on my Hitachi 720P HDTV, I can only imagine what the difference would be on a 1080P resolution HDTV. This is a great way to go if you want to wait for the Blu Ray players to come down in price.
I also ordered a HDMI Cable at the same time and used it instead of Component cables.

Great little dvd player
This DVD player is a great value for the money. It is slim enough to fit right in the smallest spaces, yet delivers huge playback! I am very happy with this purchase and will definitely buy a Sony again.
This is the first review I've ever written. This player is THE best DVD player I have ever owned. The audio output on the player is fantastic. Never heard my surround set-up work so well. It even plays DVD Audio discs with superb separation.
Highly recommend this player from Sony and especailly at this price!
I have a Toshiba HD DVD player and it doesn't compare to the Sony.

Sony DVP-NS700H/B Review
Looking for an inexpensive (and reliable) upconvert DVD player which would give an improvement of the video quality on an HDTV. This model filled all of the items I was seeking.
I am very pleased with this product. While I am still learning about its features and settings, the only minor annoyance I can come up with is the player will not allow me to activate the movie's subtitles without first having defined it in the Setup menu. If I don't perform that and begin the movie, it will display some sort of security violation message if I should select the subtitle button on the remote.

Outstanding picture
Just purchased this model Sony DVP-NS700H to replace a Philips 3140 that I owned for less than 24 hours. The Philips was trash. I mean real junk. I had a $50 Samsung for 4 years before it gave up the ghost. Bought the Philips, returned the Philips, and bought this Sony. Very, very pleased with the DVP-NS700H and would recommend it to anyone looking for an inexpensive disc player with great performance.
I bought this on the recommendation from Amazon website. I am very pleased with the purchase. Picture quality is excellent. There are many features that can be tweaked if you want. Right out of the box the picture is great. I set mine up with a HDMI cable to my AV receiver then to the Flat Screen. Amazing.
Amazon is the best place to buy. Watch those prices for the next 30 days after you buy. :)
This DVD player was great and I was very satisfied. The DVD view was perfect picture and sound. It was working excellent. The DVD player was not too heavy. I was enjoying DVD movies and music DVD's. It was great.

WoW! Great picture quality
Picked up one of these units today to replace an ailing ten year-old Pioneer DV-414 DVD player. Was looking for something inexpensive and this Sony unit seemed to fit the bill. Was really impressed at how much better the picture quality was. Even with me still using old technology (CRT based television). My one and only complaint is a old pet peeve of mine - which is having the manual control buttons on the unit black with black icons. Would it really kill people to have icons/text you could see on consumer grade A/V equipment? Heck, I would even like to see the logos/letter being made out of glow-in-the-dark sort of plastic or paint. Remote control is a decent design - good size buttons and clearly labeled. Nice 70 page user manual - very easy to read and actually has a useful index for looking up specific information. Unit also came with a basic set of cables (RCA variety) and a set of AA batteries for the remote.

great quality image for the money
My Memorex DVD player bit the dust recently, and after a good search I settled on the Sony DVP-NS700H/B as its replacement. Good move! It can't deliver Blu-Ray quality--we're waiting on Blu-Ray prices to fall further--but its image quality on my 42" 1080p LCD TV is really good, better than I'd expected--and a HUGE improvement over the quality of the video from my old Memorex player. I think it's an excellent value. (Plus CDs played in it sound great through my home theater sound system.)

no divix but oh well. no usb, oh well.
yeah this DVD player is pretty sweet. i do like the way the samsungs are laid out, they are a bit more user friendly but ive found they can be a bit glitchy. sony products seem to be built better.
my only real requirements for an upscaling dvd player was optical outputs and this one had it. as the other players played divix, there was no optical output to be found. besides my xbox plays divix, so for me, i didnt care.
the features on the front on the dvd player were only open.power and play. no FFW or RWD but no biggie, the remote is big and the buttons are well spaced.
this DVD player is slow loading but has very detailed user settings which are cool once you get the hang of it.
i do hate that you cant change most of the user settings adjustments if theres a DVD in the tray which can be bothersome but once youve set everything up youre good to go anyway.
this isnt the prettiest dvd player but im sure its the best cause sony builds sturdy stuff. this is a DVD player for the audiophile and clarity obsessed because it really is clear! i upgraded from a 1080i output dvd player to this one and did notice a difference, its more crisp and colorful. for the people that say upgrading to 1080p doesnt make a difference just dont know what they are talking about.
for 80 bucks, its worth the upgrade for anyone looking for a clearer picture or anyone with a HDTV.
Just got this and so far so good. Watched my DVD of "The Birds" and I need to make color adjustments, etc, otherwise has a great picture. Easy to set up and to use. Great price.

I'm waiting for the cost of blu-ray to come down
I have a Sony DVP-NS57P/B Progressive Scan DVD Player, Black and it looks pretty good on my 1080p Panasonic plasma. I was going to buy this unit tonight at one of the large electronic retail stores. A guy with a blue shirt showed me a display with a standard dvd player, in fact I think it was the NS57P, this upscaling unit and a blu-ray side by side. The standard dvd looked terrible but they weren't using component video cables, just the yellow RCA. This unit was hooked up with an HDMI cable and it looked about like what I get with my standard dvd player ath home. The blue-ray looked awesome. I think I'm going to put the money I was going to spend tonight into a savings account labeled blu-ray and wait till Christmas and see where the prices are then. The jump from standard 480p and this is simply not worth it.

Huge step up from NS75 -- yes, I can see the improved quality
I had the very good Sony NS75 upconverting player, but when I saw this new NS700 at such a great price (same as the NS75 two years ago), I jumped on it. The old NS75 did only 1080i, while this new player does 1080p. In fact, it's the first HDTV peripheral I've bought that exploits my nearly two-year-old A2000's native 1080p.
Some may say, who can tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p? Well, between this player and my old one, I can. Not only is the progressive scan superior, Sony seems to have really improved upconversion processing in the two years since the NS75. Before, I was aware of the upconversion. Now, the NS700 does such a phenomenal job, it really does feel like watching true hi-def from a DVD.
This player is so good and such a good deal that I feel comfortable putting off a Blu-ray/PS3 player purchase for a while.

I borrow DVD'a from the local library and when they work they look really good. But the player rejects alot of them if they've been around a long time, so it's fussy. It's ok- I accept it. Relatively new DVD's really look terrific.

This player is a great compliment to my new Samsung LCD HDTV LN40A550. My entire DVD collection looks great. And at this price I can save some money for a future Blu-Ray player to get the most out of my TV. Great player for the money. Sony is the best!
Quality always seems to follow Sony products. Sony seems to remember the most important facit of sales that so many other companies, large and small, forget or just plain ignore; quality sells!
A side note about Sony electronics which makes life easy for the electronically impaired. The dvd player has a feature Sony calls Sony Link. The bottom line about this feature is that once connected to a Sony TV, all you need do to play a DVD is turn on the dvd player and put a DVD in the dvd player. The TV turns itself on and the DVD begins to play. When the dvd player is turned off, the TV automatically switches to a cable signal and broadcasts television. Sony makes life easy and delivers it with quality.

Outstanding Sony product
The usualy Sony quality is evident. Upscaling is the way to go if you have a library of DVDs and don't want to have to spend a furtune to upgrade to Blu-ray. Excellent value and with the HDMI connection (cord not included, so buy one online) it plugs directly into a HDTV.
I really like the picture quality using a HDMI cable hooked up to my Sony Bravia, and that is the main reason for my purchase.
But I am disapointed that there is no 75 ohm coax connecters, what this means if you want to hook the DVD Player up to your HD TV AND to the coax cable that is pre wired in your house feeding other TV's in other rooms (so you can watch movie's on your other TV's without purchasing additional DVD players or moving this one) you will also have to purchase an RF Modulator:
http://www.amazon.com/Philips-PH61159-RF-Modulator/dp/B0001GGXQI/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1217463202&sr=8-1
And also a A/B switch:
http://www.amazon.com/RCA-VH74-Deluxe-B-Switch/dp/B00009W3F3/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1217463302&sr=8-1
For your Antenna/Dish/Cable TV etc.
And also 2 coax jumper cables:
http://www.amazon.com/GE-AV93233-Video-Coax-Cable/dp/B00009UHAJ/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1217464428&sr=1-10
Something to consider.

Great little upverting DVD player
This little Sony is a real gem. It was extremely easy to set up, taking all of 5 minutes! Or less! The picture is great, working both on my HDMI TV, and the unit I purchased for my sister is great on her older TV which is slated to be replaced later this year.
The remote controls are obvious for use, and the layout of the remote is simple to learn. I enjoy the fact the player goes to black screen with moving windows to protect my TV if I'm interrupted longer than expected while watching a movie.
This is a great machine, especially for the price. A person can't go wrong with it!

SONY DVP-NS700H/B 1080p upscaling DVD player
Sony DVP-NS700H/B 1080p Upscaling DVD Player, Black
Although I don't consider myself a Hi-Tek geek who knows all the intricate details of DVD players, I am somewhat computer literate and know the difference between performance of electronic equipment good or bad. With that caveat, I can only describe my new purchase of a Sony DVD player (listed above) as a very satisfying experience in all respects.
From its sleek appearance to its ease of setup to its admirable performance, it's been flawless. Compared with the several past generational DVD players owned, this one is far and beyond superior in every way. Coupled with my new 32in. VIZIO plasma TV the viewing experience is nothing short of awesome. Sure, there are some programming delays, if 30 seconds counts for a delay and the little blue pilot light shines brightly and the remote probably could be more user friendly, but those just constitute griping. The picture and sound quality just blew me away and I may never attend another movie theater again (an exaggeration).
One of my favorite films which I've watched several times on my old-fashioned equipment, 2001 A Space Odyssey, came alive anew on my new rig.
Considering the nominal cost of the player (purchased with a gift certificate and shipped at no cost) this acquisition was most satisfying.

More than just a DVD Player (ultimate music player)
I had 1080p upscaling on my PS3, but I moved the PS3 to the game area. So I needed a DVD player for
my 1080p 70" Sony TV. I was quite pleased with the video picture. It is really stunning when you run
SuperBit DVDs in it.
(A SuperBit DVD doesn't have the same compressed picture as a typical DVD. They eliminated all of the previews and behind the scenes garbage and used the entire DVD's storage for picture and sound.)
Although Blue-Ray is stunning, I just can't pay $30 for a movie I can get for $10 that looks really good as well. I ran Disney's Cars side to side via BlueRay and 1080p upscale to compare the formats. There was a lot more dimension and better color on the BlueRay, but not anything that justified 3 times the cost. I keep my BlueRay purchases to just the movies that will benefit the most from the format, for example when Ironman comes out, I will spend the extra for that. (sound is entirely different issue that factors into what kind of speakers and receiver you own).
One thing that gets overlooked with this DVD player is the ability to play music. Most folks don't realize that you can drag up to 700MB of MP3s onto a blank CD-Rom (approx. 150 songs) and play them on this DVD player. That is better than any 5 disc CD player. If you use an application like iTunes, you can burn songs on a DVD-Rom (4.2GB of MP3s) that is almost 1,000 songs.
I always like to tell folks you can burn your entire Xmas song collection on one disc and let it play randomly. The same goes for the entire Beatles collection or every Sinatra song on one disc.
It is really simple to do this, you don't need to be a computer geek to figure it out. iTunes makes it super simple (PC or Mac).
Also note, it you are a tech geek and you have .avi files or mpegs on disc, this will play them as well.
If you have home movies on your computer, just burn them to a CD or DVD-Rom and this DVD player will play them. You don't have to convert them or format them to a "DVD Video". Just leave them as mpegs.
This DVD player is one heck of a machine.

Quality DVD - upconverts to 1080p
Have owned this for only 24hrs so far. It looks sleek and has a beautiful remote. I send audio via optical to my receiver and video via hdmi to my Panasonic plasma 42inch HDTV. For the technically challenged, use the user-friendly manual to set everything to your taste and this superb player will automatically upconvert your dvds for you. I have noticed that the sound quality is significantly improved over my 2yr old Toshiba dvd player even though I used optical for that too. Other bonus features in the remote include the ability to control your TV using the Dvd remote, changing the tv display, recall upto 6 dvds you've played in the past and continue from where you left off, audo presets and much more. I really love the remote. Fits snugly in your palm. Back to the dvd player. It has blue light which perfectly contrasts with the black color.

I dont want to spend $400.00+ for PS3 or other HD players.
With $80.00 i dont have to worry anymore, my HD dream come true!
This really works! I had my doubts, but this is great technology. I am an avid movie watcher and have owned a Sony Ps3 (which I partially purchased to play Bluray movies.)
The up sampling on this player works like a charm, with regular DVD's. As a matter of fact, in my opinion Bluray looks annoyingly like a video game and up sampling looks better!
Save your money and beat the system! This will make you happy you got a flat screen with an HDMI input! The price is very cheap and this will remind you why you purchased that big flat screen in the first place. (really)

An inexpensive way to greatly improve picture quality
I recently purchased a Panasonic 50" plasma 1080p HDTV. I have a fair number of DVD's and was slightly disappointed with the picture quality via my old DVD player. After becoming aware of these upconverting or upscaling DVD players, I began doing a little research, as I'm not quite ready to spring for a BluRay player, and purchased the Sony NS700H. The improvement in the picture quality is striking. I couldn't be more pleased, given the price of this unit.
I spoke with several video geeks, even a couple in the box stores, and all told me the same thing -- this type of DVD player will work best with a 1080p TV and an HDMI connection. Since this is the configuration I have, it works beautifully.

Nice DVD player replacement, lacking features though
Don't get me wrong, I love what it does to my DVDs but, common, cheap boxes are doing DivX since forever! No Divx/mpeg, no USB/Flashcard input, etc - shame on you Sony! Thanks for JPEG but hello, I take video with my camera too!!!
Too bad can't get rid of my old box yet :(
p.s. Can I download a newer firmware and upgrade it? Oh, forgot you don't have any means to comm with this box.
I got this because the blu-ray players are still too expensive.
This player works very good, the only thing I don't like is that it does not show the chapter # on the display on the dvd player itself , but if you press the DISPLAY button you can see it on the screen.
If you hook up yours through HDMI you also get sound through it on the tv, so no need to run any other wire other than hdmi(mine is hooked up through a receiver).
You get a nice blue led light as well.
I got a Phillips model 1 day before this one then replaced it with this sony one because it did not have a fiber optic out for the sound and when I tried to hook up the red/white rca to the receiver , my speakers and especially the sub made a very loud humming noise (the picture wasn't as good either).
With the fiber optic , it IS perfect !!!!!!!

Works great with my 32" LCD
I watch a lot of DVD's and always found it a little annoying that the entire screen of my high definition TV is not leveraged with a standard DVD player. This unit upscales standard DVD's so that the picture fills up the entire screen and with no loss in picture quality that I can see. I love it! With blu-ray players costing 5 times as much, this is a great bargain until blu-ray DVD's and players become the norm and their prices drop.
This player has handled every DVD I've thrown at it. Produces an excellent picture. No problems. Does an amazing job of upscaling. Couldn't be happier.

Best of the Pure DVD Players
I have gone through several DVD players and determined that Sony is consistently the best brand in terms of quality. I recently purchased they Sony DVP-NS700 as a last minute replacement for my Toshiba dual VHS/DVD player. Unfortunately the Toshiba developed the same malady as my previous Toshiba, which was the same affliction as my initial Philips Magnavox. The problem with these previous players was that they sometimes struggled with some DVDs. Random chapters would freeze or become choppy sometimes loosing the soundtrack all together. For a while I blamed this peculiarity on blemished DVD surfaces or laser-reader head needing cleaning. The truth of the matter was that the laser-reader units in other brands were just not up to tolerances in Sony products. For DVDs failing to operate correctly on other machines I would often retry them on my old reliable Sony player. Sure enough, in most cases, the DVDs would play perfectly.
Our upstairs Toshiba experienced the above-mentioned glitches on a regular enough basis that my son was concerned that his long planned DVD movie get-together would be ruined. In searching for a replacement I stumbled onto the DVD-only machines. Slim, lightweight, and affordable I was able to buy the DVP-NS700 to supplement the living room's sometimes ailing system. Instead of a 100 percent replacement I simply put the new machine on top After I hooked up the player I tried some of the known troubled DVDs on the machine as a test. All played without issue.
The only regret I have about installing the new player is that my two-year old Panasonic HD television does not have a dedicated HD cable hookup. As such I was forced to use the standard three-wire component cables to connect the player to the television. Despite this challenge the picture is the clearest I have ever seen from a DVD player.
For the most part this is a great dvd IF you get one that works. I had two that were play about 90% of the dvd and then lose the picture. Finally gave up and switched to a different player. Had hoped that since this was not a extreme low end player, that this wouldn't happen. Load times for dvd was long. When the dvd played, picture quality was great, upscaling was almost as good as bluray. Menu system is fairly intuitive.
