The redesigned Sony Mylo COM-2 (which stands for "my life online") enables you to stay in touch with all your IM and e-mail contacts without having to lug around a laptop. While still curvy along the sides for a comfortable feel in the palms of your hand, the top and bottom of the Mylo COM-2 have been given a sleeker straight edge. Other improvements include a larger 3.5-inch LCD (800 x 480-pixel resolution), a bump in Wi-Fi speed to 802.11g (in addition to 802.11b), and a built-in 1.3-megapixel camera. Other features include an easy-to-operate back-lit, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, an embedded microphone and speaker, multi-format digital audio player, and integrated Skype VoiP capabilities.

The redesigned Mylo COM-2 now includes faster Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11b/g), a 1.3-megapixel camera, and upload/download capabilities so you can share photos on the Web. |
With the integrated wireless LAN, you won't have to worry about monthly bills or long-term contracts--just connect to any open Wi-Fi network and start chatting with friends using AIM, Google Talk, or Yahoo! Messenger. You can also browse the Web as well as send and receive email. Enjoy free Internet phone calls to and from any Skype enabled device and PC anywhere in the world, or Skype-Out to any phone number for a nominal fee.
The built in 1.3-megapixel camera lets you capture photos, edit them on the built in photo editor and--because the COM-2 features upload and download capability--post them directly to your blog or even to your Facebook page.
Through its hi-resolution touch-screen, enhanced Web Browsing combined with Adobe Flash Lite 3 support means you now have access to websites like YouTube and others. Flash Lite support also means you can play compatible casual Flash games.
In addition to powerful communication features, the Mylo COM-2 also provides a wide variety of digital audio, video, and photo playback. Like it's predecessor, the COM-2 is compatible with MP3, ATRAC, WMA (including secure Windows Media DRM 10 tracks you've purchased from online music stores or downloaded from subscription services), and it now can also play un-secured AAC tracks. The improved video player supports both MPEG4 simple/advanced along with the improved video quality of MPEG4 AVC. And the Mylo COM-2 is all about multi-tasking: listen to music while you IM or surf the Web.
The rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides up to 20 hours of continuous music playback, up to 7 hours of video playback, and up to 6 hours of Internet calling. It comes with 1 GB of internal memory, which can be expanded via Memory Stick Duo media, and it offers USB 2.0 high-speed connectivity to your PC.
Mylo Widgets
The Mylo COM-2 comes with several pre-installed widgets that range from a Google search widget and the Facebook Notifier (tracking activity on your Facebook page) to more advanced apps like the My Contacts widget, which works as a consolidated buddy list for all the IM applications on the Mylo. In addition to the preinstalled widgets, you'll be able to download new widgets from the Mylo web site as well as register as a developer if you want to build your own widgets.
Note About Connectivity
The mylo Personal Communicator COM-1 requires a compatible wireless LAN access point to use the interactive IM, email, and Web features. It generally requires no additional monthly service charges as long as you are connected to free access points found in homes, cafes, businesses, and campuses. However, some access points and features may rely on Internet services which may require a fee.

Poor Mylo has missed it's window
The poor Sony Mylo. It was a great concept. However, it is made obsolete by the advent of the iPod Touch. The touch offers all of the features of Mylo that appeal to a younger generation plus much, much more and no proprietary memory cards to worry about. At the fringe of its development, Mylo is awesome. Now, it will simply fade to black.
Sorry, Sony.

Filled with regret
I can honestly say that I'm full of regret. Everything sounds so perfect, but trust me the iPod touch is so much better. The iPod touch is so much smaller, it runs so much smoother too.
Internet
The winner of this round goes to the iPod Touch!
You maybe thinking, "But it has a high res screen, the iPod touch's screen can't compete". Thats where your wrong. The iPod touch often displays the site perfectly. Where the mylo doesn't. Most sites look best at a higher res is the problem. But the iPod does a great job at scaling it. Zooming in is quick and easy to read pages. With the mylo you often have to wait a long time for everything to load again if you want to resize, which you will. Also pages run a lot quick on the iPod touch. An intense graphical page loads in 40 sec, where on the mylo the same page would take 2:30 Minutes. It doesn't matter how fast your connection is. The mylo simply cannot render the pages. When you scroll through pages it's very laggy. But on the ipod it's a very smooth experience.
Multimedia
iPod (Duh) is the winner
The fact is when you get this you are probably gonna want to use it's super pixel dense screen, right? Well wrong. It only supports resolution up to 320x240. Where the iPod supports it's full resolution 480x320. So videos on the iPod look like there supposed. You can even hook up your iPod to your TV.
Functions
Winner is iPod
With the app store it's not confusing why this is the winner. It does everything the Mylo does, but runs it faster and smoother. There really isn't much more to say.
Closing Statements
If you want something good pickup a Touch, there only 230 for there latest model, the Mylo isn't even worth my time. I wish I never bought it. I'm only 14, $300 is a lot of money. I'm filled with this terrible regret. I wish I could get rid of this thing. I wish there was a review like this that could have opened my eyes before it was to late. Don't make the same mistake I did.
Sony Com-2
To whom it ma concern:
I bought this Sony Com-2 three weeks ago. I can not get it to work. I have seven computers and run a computer repair service for a living. I have a Hewlett Packard Jornada 680 Handheld PC. it works just fine, but dose not have enough memory to bring up all my home pages. The Com-2 has three times the memory. But dose not work. You call Sony and they give you the run a round. Sony has a good product and I Owen five of there protects , but this one is not worth the time of day. Call for support and they will hang up on you or till you they will call you back and never do so. Sony You were the leader in the industry!! What happened? Put out stuff like this and people like me will go back to American made stuff. You lost a 20 year old customer. I will try to sell this junk on e-Bay.
I love it. That's something that I'm looking for. It has very good view at mobile web. If its volume is little bigger, it will be much better than now, when you make Skype phone call. Comparing to the similar products, it has nothing to complaint.
I bought the Mylo for my grandsons. I actually bought two of them. My 16 year old hates it because he cannot get online anywhere except at home and can only make phone calls from Skype at home. This is a complete waste of money for me as I bought them so that I could keep in touch with my boys when they were out and about and also my 16 year old wanted to be able to get online at his dad's without tying up their computer. He has no online capabilities or phone. I can call him and leave a voice mail that he can retrieve after he gets home, but that's a little silly. I paid for two phone numbers and plans that are a total waste of money. I am a very dissatisfied customer and would not recommend this product to anyone. I love Sony products but this one is worthless.

Worthless piece of s
I bought it and returned it to the store 5 days later. it does not work.
1) It will only find networks with access points as far away as 10 feet.
2) It will NOT connect to hotels wifi networks.
3) It is advertised as 1GB memory but download a web page and it will not have enough memory for it, it actually only uses about 40MB
4) It will not do Skype and Yahoo simultaneously, it does not have enough memory to do it.
DO NOT waste your time and money on this COM2 MYLO

A personal comunicator, not a computer.
The mylo COM2 is great, I had the first one and didn't like it so much, but made use of it anyway. I think this thing is great, it works all IM clients well and you can go on the net and actually upload stuff. The keyboard is backlit so it's always easy to work that, it's touch screen and easy to navigate. Websites load pretty fast for a handheld and you can scroll 3 different ways. You may not be able to have every one of the applications open but, it's NOT a computer, it's a personal communicator. Just wanted to mention that since some have that confused.

We tried, but no cigar
Purchased for yahoo mail and Skype. Purchased the extra memory module. After receipt, we brought up Skype (to determine login requirements) then Yahoo Messenger (also to determine login requirements). We then played music and attempted to look at a Video. Got an "out of memory" error and were directed to a MANUAL memory manager. Had to remove applications by hand to make room for Video. Apparently applications stay resident after they are started and DO NOT use the memory stick. Took to McDonalds (actually 3 of them). WiFi automatically connected and we make a Skype call. We could not hear the person called - he could hear us. Apparently you need to use the earphones. This takes it from a business situation to a teenager with earphones. Dorky. We got into Yahoo Messenger but then were asked to login into Mail on a postage stamp sized screen. No way to "full screen" the mail login. It's on it's way back to Amazon. If you want a phone with WiFi buy a Blackerry. If you want a small computer with WiFi buy a Eee or Everex or Cloudbook or Easynote. This is a joke !!!

It's really good
This product is actually really good. I got one for myself( white one) and another one for my fiance ( black one). They look very nice and everything else works great. The only problem I see is that you can't buy internet for this. And the hotspots are not that good, you can't use it on the bus or the car or the train... only where there is free access to internet and that gets me upset.

Good but expensive
I bought a Mylo Com-2 predominantly for Skype calling from wi-fi (802.11b/g) hotspots. My impression of the unit was that it was well put together and the software was easy to use. I'll cut to the chase on what I didn't like: (1) the Skype functionality can't be used in hands-free mode - a big no-no for me since I like to communicate whilst having hands free. It's a shame because the music player works through the speaker - I guess it's a firmware patch thing. (2) the fact that you have to use Sony's proprietary memory sticks. Wake up Sony. The world now uses SDCards. You lost the race! (3) The price. At $299 USD it's way over priced. If you consider that a Blackberry with Skype costs ~$200 and you get a relatively cheap data-plan from a cell phone carrier you're going to have similar costs plus you have a cell phone and the other MP3 capabilities etc. (4) the proprietary microphone attachment. Admittedly they have improved this model by having a standard headphone socket.
So being fair, the product is actually well designed and the concept is good. you get AIM/YIM, Facebook, Myspace and web access without the use of a laptop (which you could probably get for a similar price used). You also get a 1.3Mpixel Camera. It's aimed at the Social-Network generation. It has the standard very good Sony 'out of the box experience'. It's a shame that it's so late and I feel that it has missed the market window. However I see that the product is aimed at children, so it may be appropriate. The question you have to ask yourself is: Do you really want to spend ~$300 on a toy that has limited use ? Why not buy a cheap cell phone and a family cell phone plan (lot's of cell phones have IM/MP3 and web/email access and Facebook/Gmail plug-ins for free - heck the iPhone has all of the above and it's really cool with an 8Gb MP3 player default [for ~$400]!. With that you can keep in contact with your kids any time and they can call 911 or emergency services if needed !! (This is a big deal for most parents I know). My money would go with the Cell Phone Plan.
The reason for a 3 star rating is that the product is well designed and functions very well at what it was designed to do. I just wish it had a cell phone built in (which would be a killer product!). I just can't justify the cost of something like this. For $100 maybe. An expensive handset otherwise. Yes, Sony is probably using the argument that you will get free communications and you are cell-phone plan free. Guess what, you're also tied into wi-fi hot-spots (which is not everywhere!). That compromise doesn't justify the cost.
I have been using this sony mylo com-2 for a couple days. Let me start by saying that i feel alot of the reviews that are negative about this device are wrong. I use the sony mylo 2 to make skype calls and read and respond to emails also i use it to watch youtube videos. The skype application works great very good call quality and if your listening to music or surfing the web and a call comes in a skype screen comes up and you can answer the call.Email function is great and you can add photo attachements and view photo attachments.Web surfing is really fast but you have to turn off the power save feature(tools then network settings then click on advanced and uncheck the box that says power save) and if you do that the youtube videos are smooth and the surfing might be faster.
some of the reviews complained about the memory problem with multi tasking on the sony mylo com-2 if you are running three applications at the same time you can get this memory error screen and you have to shut down one of the apps. alot of pocket pc's have this memory problem i own the Dell Axim X51v and even though the dell goes for $455 you encounter the same problem and have to shut down apps.
I love the sony mylo-2 so far so good...
