What can I say? It's the Who
Good introducition to the band and probably the best compilation available to the casual fan. For a more complete collection of Who songs it would be better to buy some of their albums in addition to this one. Who's Next, Quadrophenia and Tommy are Essentials to any serious collector, but this collection will have pretty much all of the songs that anyone has heard on the radio. I'm not a fan of their 60's material, so that is the reason for the 4 stars. Otherwise, the Who made some great music. They have never been one of my favorite bands, but they were one of the biggest and most influential bands to come out of the 60's and into the 70's. Along with The Rolling Stones, Led Zepellin and Pink Floyd.
It brings back some memories. There is something missing. Not sure what it is.

Who are these jokers? And why don't they rap or sing about being dumped!
I was looking at my collection of great classic rock bands and felt like I could use a few more cds to through in the bunch. After listening to good classic rock bands like The Hives, The Darkness, Jet, The Vines, Green Day, and Offspring.. I figured I could check out 'The Who', they are always on the boring rock station near my house that plays junk like Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Boston, etc... So I kinda figured i wasn't going to like them from the start; BOY WAS I RIGHT! The Who did not attempt to rap nor sing songs about slicing wrists or your girlfriend leaving you! I was even ashamed that I bothered looking these losers up!
For good music with lyrics that matter check out:
Ricki Martin, Slipknot, Murderdolls, WHAM!, George Michael, Milli Vanilli, Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, New Metallica, Atreyu, and Korn.
For good classic rock just stick with Green Day, 3 Doors Down, The Darkness, Coldplay, and RadioHead.

A good starter for a compilation
A good started comp for total years. There are better for certain periods of the Who
This could have sounded better. Something was "off" with the sound on the cd. I still enjoyed this
Very nice album and very nice to have in the collection

The essence of Who excitement. Essential!
I've been a fan of theirs since the mid 60's and always felt their earlier recordings to be the most exuberant, spontaneous and whimsically creative. After their peak with Who's Next (1971), they took themselves way too seriously with Quadrophenia and then after that they sounded angry and lost their youthful innocence, which was so charmingly foppish to begin with. To me, the first CD is the best, it features early quirky gems like: The Kids Are Allright, Happy Jack, Boris The Spider, I'm a Boy, Pictures of Lilly, I Can See For Miles, Substitute, I Can't Explain and others through the Tommy opera and parts of Who's next. CD 2 picks up with some of Who's Next then finishes through Quadrophenia, By Numbers, and Who Are You. I hardly listen to CD 2. For me, early Who is the best. Keith Moon was a very original drummer. I could never understand however, why they would destroy their instruments. If someone put a smudge on my guitar, I couldn't sleep at night. Yet, Townsend would smash his Les Paul or Strat to bits for effect. Maybe back then, it was for rebellious shock value, but today it looks stupid, senseless, violent and wasteful. The music is still very cool however. In my opinion, the three Who CDs to own are this one, The Who Sell Out (1968) and Who's Next (1971). Live at Leeds (1970) is also highly recommened if you'd like to catch their live jamming at their peak too. This collection however is ESSENTIAL for any rock fan or historian.

A worthy collection of The Who's best
Recently, what's left of The Who (Daltrey and Townshend) showed that they could still produce interesting music, with their "Endless Wire." A great album? No, but a solid one. And this collection of 35 cuts in all provides a terrific introduction to The Who's oeuvre. There can be questions about why certain cuts were included and others were excluded, but this is not one of those flawed compendia with idiosyncratic selections. The 2 CD set begins with "I Can't Explain" and ends with "Eminence Front," with a lot of music in between.
A sampler:
"My Generation." An anthem of the 60s generation for many. A certain poignancy in this phrase:
"Talkin' bout my generation,
Hope I die before I get old."
Two of The Who did die before their time (Keith Moon and John Entwistle). The instrumental work is raw and pulsating. Roger Daltrey's vocal work is an exemplar of rock and roll. One of their earliest hits--and it still sounds good today!
"Boris the Spider." Come on, how could I leave this quirky song off this brief description of my reaction to a few cuts! An odd little number (one of the few not written by Townshend--in this case Entwistle did the job). The focus is on Boris the Spider, "crawling up the wall." Nice guitar work and cool singing.
Then, "Pinball Wizard." This is from the rock opera, "Tommy." What a toe tapper! Daltrey's singing is excellent; he shows a lot of growth as a singer from the early days of the group. This is about a character who "sure plays a mean pinball." Didn't Elton John later have a hit with a cover of this song? I recall his version being fine, but this is the real deal.
"Baba O'Riley." I used to think that the name of this song was "Teenage Wasteland," for references to that phrase in the latter part of this 5 minute piece of great music. The sound shows a maturing of The Who as a group. The keyboard in this song adds a delicious element t5o the music. The guitar work is neat, Moon's drumming is great, and Daltrey's singing measures up. Again, a great 5 minutes of rock and roll.
And on it goes. . . . "Won't Get Fooled Again," "The Kids Are Alright," "Happy Jack," "I Can See for Miles," "Summertime Blues," "Long Live Rock," "Squeeze Box," "You Better You Bet," "Who Are You?," and so on.
Who could resist such a plenitude of The Who?

Great music, completely unlistenable remastering
I was recommended this collection as the best compilation of The Who hits. And indeed, the selection of songs is great.
But what does that matter when the listening experience is dull and flat. If you turn it up, everything is getting loud and tiresome with no impact. If you turn it down there is still no impact, and it is still tiresome and dull. I simply can not listen to this. It may work as background noise when you are cleaning your house, but for an enjoyable listening experience, go digging for original, non-remastered releases.
True musical enjoyment is impossible with this release.

Great Start - Ignore the Battle
I have to say, I'm laying somewhere in the middle of these extremists, I know I'm not the only one. The Battle between classic music and contemporary will wage to the ends of the Earth. Note, I'm listening to Hooligans on vinyl as I'm writing this. Seems to be necessary to point this out, because this is the reason to buy this album.
I purchased this because I owned all of my Who albums on Vinyl and I was looking for something a little easy and portable and it did the trick, but I was a Who fan to begin with. If your looking to get into the Who, this is a good start, it is necessary to pick up Who's Next, Tommy, etc. And if your really curious about rock music history pick up some of their embarrassing albums like It's Hard. You'll get the true idea of a band, these guys were very talented (the surviving still are), and tried a lot, and were for the most part successful, some of their music doesn't translate well to today, nothing wrong with that, even the sacred Beatles made some missteps.
I just hope to help some people that want o see what the Who were all about, to decide if this is a worthwhile album, it is.
I just wanted to say a few things to the people warring on this review site. The Who are a great band, but they are not the end all of music, they had their influences (Buddy Holly, Muddy Waters), as well as influenced many others, Pete Townsend himself said that he feels that "Nevermind the Bollocks here's the Sex Pistols" was the best album ever made. Fact is, the Who influenced and they were in turn influenced themselves, they are an important cog in the ever moving machine that is modern music and art. This album is a decent introduction, by no means complete, but that's why it's an intoduction. Listen to it yourself and ignore all the hype of "best band ever" or "this sucks check out dire straits". These people just want attention. Check it out yourself and see if they appeal to you.
I know I've loved them for the better part of my life.

All the highlights!
Great collection. The only problem that I can hear is that some of the songs don't sound like thier mastered right. Some of Pete Townsends guitars sound like it was recorded in a freeway underpass compared to the more recent remasters from the actual albums the songs originate from. But still, this is a definitive collection, you can't go wrong.

Not quite the ultimate collection
Disc one is great for the most part with the exception of "Happy Jack" and "Call Me Lightning". However, I was disappointed by disc two. The only really great songs on this disc are "Won't Get Fooled Again", "Behind Blue Eyes", and "Who Are You".
"Sister Disco", "Happy Jack", and "Eminence Front" should not have been included on this collection.

Great selection, incredible band, unbelievably bad mastering!
You know there is a problem with the sound on a disk when:
1. It sounds good in the car with the windows down.
2. It sounds kind of grating with headphones on a decent portable.
3. It is brittle, metallic, and painful to listen to when you play it on a studio setup with Focusrite 24bit/192khz DAC's!
I agree completely with the reviewers who criticised the sound quality. This disk is insanely overcompressed, there is no sense of space between the instruments, and the highs are tinny and brittle.
This worked as an intro to the band, but I'm going to replace it with "Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy" and the remastered "Quadrophenia", which are supposed to have great sound.
The Who: The Ultimate CollectionFor those who like the music of The Who, it's hard to beat this set. It covers almost all of the band's hits that you've heard on the radio during their time, and perhaps some you don't remember hearing, but for Who fans, it is one of the best anthologies available on CDs. Enjoy!
though looking through some of these reviews i see the hardcore who fans bashing the tracklisting and sound quality. the truth is this is a good retrospective with all the hits and will be enough for most fans. so if your in the market for one who or are looking for a good starting point either way i recommend this cd

One of The Pillars of Rock
This collection will give you a real taste of one of rock's best bands ever. The power, the swagger, the grit, the excellent song writing, the carefully chosen instrumentation, it's all here. Listen to the soaring vocals on "I'm Free", the speed-acoustic intro to "Pinball Wizard"and you'll understand why the Who had all of what classic rock embodies. As collections go, this one is pretty comprehensive. There are a few ommissions. "Tommy" and "Quadrophenia" could have been better represented. But all the great AOR and earlier AM hits are here in earnest. This is a super collection by arguably one of rock's best bands.

It's Better, it's Better , It's Best.
After reading earlier reviews of this compilation, I was worried that some of the songs might sound "altered" by the remastering process. I was pleased to listen and find no discernible difference between these versions and the others that preceded them. I had lost my "Who'better..." CD somehow, but this is an upgrade, giving you some later material like "Eminence Front". Package it with "The Kids are Alright", and you have a great collection of one of rock's best. Very good introduction to one of the best Rock bands in the world - ever!
I must admit that one of my greatest mistakes as a Rock music fan, was missing to follow the career of The Who until TOMMY was issued as a movie (1975). Since then, I found that The Who is such a great British Rock band and a landmark in the story of Rock music, in the same level of the Beatles, the Stones, Led Zeppelin or other magnificent British Rock packs (Yes, ELP, the Kinks, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, etc.).
I'm sure there are other Who compilations still available, who will satisfy classic Rock purists more than this "Ultimate". However, if you're just trying to increase your knowledge of how good British Rock became in the 1960s and 1970s, this The Who collection at no doubt will lead you to get later their entire album collection. Enjoy it!

This Is Real Music.
The Who are one of the top 5 greatest rock groups ever. Thats just not debatable. Listen to this collection and you will see why they are now legends of music. There have been many greatest hits albums for The Who because they have made so many classics. But this one beats all the other ones by far. It's got everyone of there gigantic hits and every cult-fan favorite. Boris The Spider and Eminence Front were not big hits, but they are still very popular among Who fans(me being one of them). And then you have all the basics: Baba O'Riley,Long Live Rock,Who Are You,My Generation,Pinball Wizard and many more. Overall, this is 35 songs of rock greatness. There will never be another group like The Who. They changed the face of music. Just listen to this CD and you will feel better. You will just feel happier. Long Live The Who!

For those of us who grew up in the 60's and 70's, this is great recap of the Who's most productive years. All of the major hits of that era are here and listening to them now brings you back to those halcyon days of youth when My Generation et al were hits. Even if you were only a minor fan of this band, this collection is well recommended.
ESSENTIAL FOR ALL ROCK FANS! It is amazing how much material these guys put out and how great it was! Next to maybe the essential Clash and a few others I don't think there has ever been a compilation album i have listened to as much as this one. And what can I say? It's great! The Who is just one of those bands that has always seemed to me hard not to appreciate. And this particular compilation does an excellent job of covering the bands prime years from the 60's to the 80's. THIS IS THE WHO'S ULTIMATE COMPILATION COLLECTION MASTERPIECE!
I will be writing a review on the legendary brilliant masterpiece 3-CD set LIMITED EDITION compilation album entitled "THE WHO, THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION" by one of England's greatest Rock bands, I'm talkng about THE WHO! This legendary 3-CD set LIMITED EDITION compilation album was originally released on Compact Disc in 2002 on the MCA Records label in association with UTV Records. Both of these companies are a Universal Music Company. The matrix or ID number of this album is 088 112 877-2. For a limited time only in this LIMITED EDITION SET, there was a third CD which accompanied the original 2-CD set. This third Disc would only contain four early unreleased versions of THE WHO'S greatest songs! As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.
What can I say about THE WHO that hasn't already been said? When Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, the late John Entwistle and the late Keith Moon got together in the 60's, they had bad intentions of giving Rock n' Roll a good kick in the a*s! And THE WHO DID JUST THAT! When THE WHO joined THE BEATLES, GERRY AND THE PACEMAKERS, THE ROLLING STONES AND THE KINKS in coming to America as part of "THE 60'S BRITISH INVASION," Rock n' Roll would NEVER be the same again! Only THE WHO was NOTORIOUS for DESTROYING all of their instruments at the end of the show! Keith Moon (Moon the loon) was the ULTIMATE rock drummer in the sense that he was a complete lunatic on and off the stage! Guitar legend Pete Townshend was no saint at all by all means either! Like some of their fellow British counterparts or bands such as THE ROLLING STONES, PINK FLOYD and BLACK SABBATH, THE WHO are one of the many rare REAL BRITISH ROCK BANDS that were born out of the 60's that would persevere and stay together to this very day! That in itself, is ONE HELL OF AN ACCOMPLISHMENT! In my opinion, This legendary compilation album is a true testament to a great band that has accomplished, contributed and achieved so much in Rock n' Roll history that they have earned the right to be called TRUE icons! Every single song track in this legendary compilation album is GREAT! I promise to try to make my reviews very brief this time so this review won't extend into a book!
I will list and briefly review all of the song tracks in their original exact running order as follows: DISC ONE (1.) "I Can't Explain," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! A great early WHO ROCKER! Great song!) (2.) "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great early WHO ROCKER! Great song!) (3.) "My Generation," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! This priceless gem will always be around in this lifetime to be enjoyed and cherished for many more years to come, NOW AND FOREVER!
In closing, THE WHO'S legend has NEVER ENDED! With the deaths of original WHO'S Drummer and co-founder, the great Keith (Moon The Loon) Moon and the recent death of WHO'S original Bassist and co-founder, the great John Entwistle, THE WHO'S Guitarist and co-founder Pete Townshend and THE WHO'S ONLY Lead Vocalist and co-founder Roger Daltrey have kept THE WHO ALIVE AND BREATHING TO THIS VERY DAY! THE WHO HAS HAD MANY REUNION CONCERT TOURS IN THE 80'S AND 90'S BUT THE WHO has been touring very steady in the new Millennium! With Zak Starkey (Richard Starkey's son! AKA one RINGO STARR!) taking over the helm duties as THE WHO'S NEW DRUMMER, THE WHO has new life with new added youth and energy not seen or heard in THE WHO for years! And just think, it was Moon that bought Zak one of his very first drum kits ever! As we all know, Keith Moon and Ringo Starr were the best of friends! Zak used to call Moon "UNCLE KEITH!" It is only natural and very appropriate that Zak would take over the duties as Drummer for THE WHO! Also, Simon Townshend, Pete's son also plays back up rhythm guitar for the band! I truly believe that THE WHO are here to stay and will be around for a while longer, am I wrong? Here's to you Pete, Roger, Zak and Simon and the rest of the band too on a job well done! Keep persevering! R.I.P. Keith (Moon The Loon) Moon, Born 23 August 1946, Died 7 September 1978 and John Entwistle, Born 9 October 1944, Died 27 June 2002. Entwistle's Birthday is the same as John Lennon's who was born on 9 October 1940. Thanks for reading my long review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE WHO RULES! Keith Moon Lives! John Entwistle Lives! Long Live Rock n' Roll! Rock out always and take care. Forever in Rock, J.L.
The unfortunate experience of being a music lover is that back in the 80's & early 90's you thought you bought that CD forever. Scratch that. When remasters are done of this quality, you need to buy it. This is a nice 2 cd set worth the cost. The remaster quality being the driving force. You will hear The Who as they were meant to be heard back in the day it was made- as close to the original reel to reel recordings as possible.

The BEST Who collection!!!
Look no further. If you want a greatest hits collection by the WHo, this is the one to own. Not only has it been richly remastered, but the songs are numbered in chronologically order, so you get a sense of the history and the development of the band. IMHO, their peak years were 1969-1971, and this era is well represented by "Pinball Wizard," "Behind Blue Eyes," "Won't Get Fooled Again," "Baba O'Reilly," and "Bargain."
The collection concludes with "Eminence Front," and while I love this song, it makes me miss Keith Moon on drums, not that the replacement drummer isn't solid (he is), but he doesn't play with the liveliness and spontaneity that Keith had.
There is no reason to spend your money on single disc compilations that will inevitably be missing some of the band's big songs. Get this two disc set now!
The title says it all. All the major singles and key album tracks are included here. The recording quality and liner notes are excellent as well. Only completists and serious fans need to explore further.

The Ultimate Collection, Great one to own if you just need one.
This is an excellent collection of 35 tracks from the Who, clocking in at around 136 minutes of music, all of them solid, wall to wall tracks. Plus I got the 4 track bonus CD with it, another small delight. I was introduced to the who late in life via The Smithereens Live album, and thier cover of The Who song "THE SEEKER". That was the song that just did it for me, stuck in my head and made it impossible to survive without owning at least one who album. So I picked this up at the same time I picked up "Who's Next" (another must own for a light collector). The who was shows great origins of heavy rock, punk, and the power rock genres. They were also some of the first to do concept albums. Just a great band
Highlights: My Generation, the kids are alright, substitute, magic bus, The seeker, summertime blues, behind blue eyes, baba o'reiley, and who are you.
Low lights: NONE-strong all the way through, those are just my very favorites above.
An excellent value if you pick this up, you will enjoy it.
A great collection of music. 35 of The Who's best songs it's got em' all from "Won't Get Fooled Again" to my personal favorite "My Generation". This is a great greatest hits album. By one of the most talented bands ro ever come out of the UK. These guys are great. Buy this album NOW!
don't get me wrong, there's some great stuff here: Behind Blue Eyes, Substitute, Bargain, Won't gGet Fooled Again, Baba O'Reilly, a few others. But if the Who are going to be in the co. of the all time greats, there shouldn't be any filler on a 2 disk set anthology. They're the most overrated band in rock history. tried to be rockin' and rollin' rock and roll while at the same time putting a lot of effort into concept albums, didn't get the mix right. Pink Floyd mastered the concept album 'per se', David Bowie gave us the concept album that really wasn't (rise & fall of zig strdst & spdrs frm mrs), while tommy, 4ophenia, and the one that was aborted (I forget the working title)fall short, somewhere in between. Just as the Who fall short, somewhere in between the Beatles, Stones and Led Zep. Daltrey as a great frontman? gimme a break; not worthy of shining the shoes of Jagger or Plant, not even Ozzy (in his prime with Sabbath) or Ian Gillan (Deep Purple). He doesn't even sing on some of their most famous songs, and he didn't write any of them (to go by the liner notes that came with this disc, anyway). Many of their songs are described as quirky. 'silly' is closer to the mark. How 'bout just 'dumb'? The Stones declared that 'time was on their side' and marched defiantly in the face of all obstacles, including time itself . The Who promised that they would die before they got old, on the other hand, and failed to deliver. This was my last attempt to 'get into' a band that I USED TO feel guilty for never having 'gotten into'

Easily one of the most talented groups to come out of UK
This album demonstrates the musical mastery of the legendary Who. It's also interesting how today's groups like Green Day and Limp Bizkit don't even close to the Who. And to Orion, a reviewer on this forum, you're a sad case, my friend. I sincerely hope that you successfully seek out the psychological help that you so desperately are in need of.

WORST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME...THE WHO GREATEST HITS
The Who don't have any talent. They are overrated, and only made 1 decent song in Wont Get Fooled Again. Avoid this lousy compilation and get Dire Straits Making Movies insted.
