Pretty Good except Text to Speech
I recently purchased a Tom Tom One at the same time that a friend bought a Navigon with Text to Speech for about $50 more. The text to speech is a huge advantage. We took both on a recent trip and it was amazing how often the Tom Tom "Turn Right" voice command led to confusion over which street to turn on. The Navigon telling us the street to turn on was much easier to follow.
I really wish I had done more research on GPS options.
The Tom Tom ONE 3rd Edition was our first GPS system. Some glitches, but it always got us to our destination. Would be nice to have the next turn announced sooner in case you were in the high speed
lane at speed. Would also be nice to have a consistant "recomputing"
message verbalized instead of briefly texted. "Turn right in two miles
in two miles" seems to be some default message when the unit is "confused". But, it is a base unit, and it always delivered the
goods, which is why I bought it in the first place. I would recommend
it to anybody that does not need all the doo-dads. It works fine.

Trip through the US
I'm doing a trip through the USA in September with my wife. Due to the fact that she is not the best scout I preferred to buy a navigator. I know that navigator from my company car and I ordered it to my mother in law.
For me this product is one of the best to the price alone with the maps you can update or buy other countries, like Europe for example.
WORKED REALLY WELL TOOK A TRIP FROM NY TO CANADA AND IT WAS GREAT... ALSO THE PRICE WAS GREAT AS WELL.
I previously had the TomTom Navigator 5 then Navigator 6 which I used with my Palm Treo phone and I loved them. Then I got a new job which required a GPS several times a day. That's when I realized how slow my old system was. It was great for one long trip, but took way too long for many short trips a day. So I started researching through Google and reading customer reviews on Amazon.com. Since I was only familiar with TomTom and happy with their products, most of my research was done on their products. I started reading up on the top of the line model which was like $900 which I could no way afford. Then I kept reading, moving down one model at a time. After checking them all out, I came to the conclusion that the quality of the product line was the same from the most expensive to the least. The 2 major differences were the options (which I didn't need) and the screen size (the smallest was considerably larger than what I had been using. So for the first time that I can remember, I bought the absolute entry level product and I couldn't possibly be happier. I've been using it daily for about a month and totally LOVE IT!!! In nearly 2,000 miles of daily driving to about 4 to 6 different addresses around a good sized metropolitan area and its outskirts, it has been not only quick and easy to use, but deadly accurate. I would whole heartedly recommend the TomTom One 3rd Edition to anyone looking for a no-frills navigation system!

Don't know how I lived without it!!
I ordered two of the TomTom's in January - one for myself and one as a gift. It was great to be able to find out where I was supposed to turn without having to look at a map. The routes that this system gives are great. A month ago I purchased a new Chrysler that had a built in navigation system...I tried using both of them at the same time and TomTom won hands down so even though I have the built in model I only use TomTom!!!! By the way, I just ordered yet another TomTom as a gift for a friend who always gets lost and never wants to stop for directions...he loves it too!!!

Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!!!
This is our first GPS device. My wife mentioned she might like to try one upon hearing the words of encouragement fron a friend of hers. We recently went on a trip to Portland, OR and let me tell you, if your not familiar with a big city,THIS WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE!!!!! It will do anything it is asked to do. Addresses were right on. Freeway routing and changeovers were perfect. The only downside we have found so far is when you are in rural areas, the house numbers and rural addresses are off. It shows our house abouy a block and a half from our actual location, but overall, for the money, you can't beat it.TomTom ONE 3rd Edition 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Vehicle Navigator

the ONE is the one!
Personal navigation systems seem to have popped up aplenty over the past year or two. Along with the marquee brands (TomTom, Garmin, Magellan etc) several Asian manufacturers also came to the fore flauting their 'brand-effectiveness' through value-priced models. Last Christmas season, I was close to purchasing the original ONE, but held on for the 'next-gen'. In hindsight, what a decision it turned out to be!
the ONE is arguably the best value-for-money personal navigation model in the market today. Extremely compact yet packing a full 3.5" screen, precise maps, 3D atlas renderings, and crisp turn-by-turn directions, the ONE is a pocket-sized dynamo that delivers great performance. I know friends that use Garmins and have a gripe or two about the accuracy of the maps. the ONE is pre-loaded with US/Canada maps that has not let me down once since I bought it.
Another great feature for the Tom Tom models is the map-correction feature through their application, which is available free of charge for download. I synch the ONE on a monthly basis and routinely get corrections made by users to POIs, street intersections etc. It's very convenient and not very time-consuming nor does it require much tech-savvy.
A couple of minor gripes I've had with the device are:
1) battery life - even with the audio turned off, the ONE hasn't given more than ~2 hours of juice. Not a show-stopper, just the hassle of purchasing multiple cigarette jacks if you switch between different cars the way I use it.
2) I've found that the ONE routinely takes a good minute or two to synch up with the GPS satellites when the device first powers up. I've had it happen on freeways as well, and don't believe it's the known handicap of GPS receivers around city roads.
3) Text-to-speech - All devices in the market today seem to have reserved this feature for higher end models at premium price points. It takes a little getting used to anticipate distances in the real world based on the timing of the voice-over lady. Well, you can't have the cake and eat it too!
All-in-all, if you're shopping for a navigation system that you can rely on to actually get you to wherever you're headed without denting your picket, look no further than the ONE.
Tom Tom has a nice GPS. Easy to use, and works very well. I have found that many of the maps are missing streets and have not been able to add them. But overall, a very good entry level GPS.

EXCELLENT TOOL; VERY HAPPY
What a great tool to have. I use it both when I know exactly where I'm going (to check TomTom and see if I agree) and when I don't know where I am. TomTom gets me where I need to go on every occasion. It screwed up in Boston so I gave it 4 stars and not 5 stars. I heard "you've reached your final destination" and I was on some street in Boston and where was the Westin? I was not happy. I drove aimlessly straight and saw a glimmer of something familiar and there was the hotel.
I agree that the battery life is not so great. Best to have cell phone already charged if you're going to be in the car with TomTom because there's only one cigarette lighter.
Yes, it does NOT tell you the name of the street to turn on. But THAT IS NOT A PROBLEM. TomTom tells you ahead of time "in 800 yards, turn right" and then at the top of the screen will be the NAME OF THE STREET. And you have the map with the BRIGHT GREEN ARROW showing you exactly where to turn. And then when you are AT THE STREET, it says "turn here" and says it AGAIN so you just KNOW when you're at the turn; plus the maps are pretty accurate as far as where the arrow is telling you to turn. Also, if you picked the wrong street to turn on, you'll see TomTom recalculating the route, so you can always turn around and keep going and wait for TomTom to say "TURN HERE." Or you can just listen to TomTom lead you to your destination from where you are. This time don't jump the gun and wait for TomTom to say "TURN HERE"!
I am very very pleased with my TomTom GPS. It's reasonably priced and very pleasant to use. I recommend it 100 percent. (I've had it for 5 months now and have used it a lot.)
I bought the TomTom 3rd edition & I love it! I use it primarily to deliver flowers around Cape Cod & I have to say that while I've lived here for over 40 yrs, we get orders for places/areas I've never heard of in our delivery area. I just put in the town, address and frequently ask for another route that does not take me on main roads. I have found places that were not in the Cape Cod Road Atlas! I would never have found them w/out this device. The only bad part is that a few more instructions included w/the product would be nice since it has taken me quite a while to figure out how to use it & I'm still learning. But overall, I'd highly recommend! PS: I did not install mine on the dash or windshield. I put it in a place I can hear it even though I can't nec see it. I would think having this on dash/windshield would be very distracting. I just listen to the instructions and follow them.

Good Product With Weaknesses
I've had a TomTom ONE 3rd Edition for about 2 months now & overall it's a fairly easy product to use & does navigate well. It's not unusual for it to say that you've arrived at your destination a half block away from the actual destination as there are quite a few map errors. Also, it does tend to route you via Interstate highways even if a different highway is more direct & much faster. There is a map correction feature that does take some getting used to as it's not overly intuitive. Probably the most annoying feature is that the unit has to be plugged into your computer's USB port when it's not being used or the battery will go completely dead within a week's time. I contacted tech support on this issue & was advised that this is normal. Other brands do not have this problem. The battery life is pretty good at about 2-2.5 hours. The navigation is pretty accurate & the map corrections are a real bonus. There is a lot of free content that you can download (voices, sounds, color schemes, etc.) to really personalize the unit. Overall it's a good unit--I bought it because it was listed in Consumer Reports as one of the best basic units for the money--but given the negatives I've observed I think I would probably go for a Garmin if I had it to do over again.

Pleased with purchase.
I received a 4.2" TomTom One for Father's Day based upon my son's extensive research into GPS units and this purchase was for my college age daughter for her birthday. It seems to be basically the same as my unit but has smaller screen and cost $100 less. Seems like a good buy. About the only complaint I have is that they won't save alternate routes to the "favorite" list.

TomTom 1 Disappointment
I used my new TomTom 1 for the first time on a 3,000 miles trip here in the USA. Right away, the thing kept falling off the dash base. I did not attach it to the windshield as I would be travelling through States where that is illegal. I'm not convinced it would have stayed on the windshield any better. After about 20 times of falling off, I finally just placed it in the ashtray and it seemed to get the signals just fine from there. Secondly, and probably most important, it tells you that you will be turning right or left at 1/2 mile & 1/4 mile ahead, BUT, IT DOES NOT TELL YOU THE NAME OF THE STREET TO TURN ON. The system worked OK other than these 2 annoyances. HINT: If it won't turn on in your car, check to be sure the charging adaptor is fully engaged in the cigarette lighter. I was at my wits end by the time I figured this out!

Good product, it's great that you can update it via internet. A couple of adresses were not precise though. It would be nice if it said out loud when it's relocating a route

Very good product.
It works as supposed but you must update using TomTom Home software.
Without this update the maps are not complete, missing several streets.
To decide among Garmin and TomTom I read other opinions at this site. There is
a very interesting report from one person that did a travel vacation using
both brands.

Does a nice job for the money
We already own a Garmin 350 but on occassion, my wife and I are out of town at the same time and could use a second GPS. Although the TomTom ONE 3rd Edition does not pronounce the names of the streets like the Garmin, it still gives plenty of warning time (2 miles) and once you get accustomed to its style of giving directions ("in 50 feet make a right and then stay right, followed by a left turn") it works like a gem. The routes selected by the unit make sense (only twice did it appear to get confused and that was AT the destination) and the satellite signal comes in much quicker than the Garmin. The screen display showing the remaining distance in large numbers in the lower left hand corner are extremely convenient.
If you want street recognition, go with a higher level product but if you want reliable directions with no bells and whistles at a good price, this product will do the job for you!
TomTom One Third Edition Auto Navigation System (Refurbished)
Biggest problem I have had with this device: If an off-street location is stored, cannot be used for navigation at a later date. Street addresses work best

Well, I loved it until it was stolen this week...
I agree with all the pros listed in the other reviews. We bought ours three months ago because my husband is from Sri Lanka and is not the best with getting around. To my surprise, I ended up using it and loving it too. We moved to a new city and it became even more useful. Well, we always hid it in the console between the seats but stupidly left the mount on the window. $670 later we have replaced our smashed window but not yet the GPS (it was so expensive because they leaned on the glass to break it and caused the window regulator to bend. Who knew?). Considering the hassle of really NEEDING to remove the mount every time to deter thieves, we're going to go with the slightly more expensive TomTom One 130 model that has the mount built-in and fold up into the back of the unit. I think it's worth the extra $6 for the TomTom One 130 model, otherwise you really need to remove and hide the bulky mount.

Good, but not excellent
Since a lot of people already gave detailed reviews, I'll just go with pros and cons:
Pros
- Easy to use (never even opened the manual so far)
- Cheap
- Has 2D, 3D and several compass options, helping a lot people without sense of direction (like my wife)
Cons:
-Several names of locations are different than normal names (Instead of Ellacoya State Park, you can find it as State Park-Ellacoya State Park) This makes it difficult to find things sometimes. Other state parks are missing.
- There are several streets not in the map in New Hampshire, streets that are more than 5 yrs old.
- I had read this before I bought it, but I hate the autozoom function on it. Why can't they let me lock the thing in the zoom I want?
For the price, I guess you can live with the cons..

The perfect GPS unit for under $200
I bought this unit when it was on sale for $140 (usual price is $200) at a local retailer. Took it home and had a heck of a time opening up the packaging which is made to stop thieves from breaking it open in the store... I turned it on and found that it already had a charged battery (very nice touch) and it asked me for my home address (so that it could sync up with the satellite for navigation). Next thing you know I am up and running!
I had to go to a family garthering that day and decided to let the TomTom direct me there (even though I knew where the place was). I attached the suction cup to the windshield and the TomTom took me all the way to the front door. I even made a wrong turn on purpose to see what would happen, without a hiccup it directed me to where I should be. I actually brought the unit inside with me to show my family. My mom was so impressed she asked if I would buy one for her the next day, which I did. (To which my Dad remarked "Thanks for making spend $140 dollars!")
Fast forward a few months and I am using this thing all the time. I go to Sandy Hook pretty much every weekend in the summer and the TomTom has been a blessing. They are doing construction on the bridge right by the beach and it takes forever to get on the Northbound side of Rt 36 coming out of the park. If you take the Southbound lane it's a lot quicker but you go through Rumson which I'm not familiar with. So as soon as I got over the Rumson bridge I powered up the TomTom and before you know it I was on Rt 35 and on the Garden State Parkway on my way home. I also have to mention that there were really no signs on the roads to show me how to get to the highway, so I would have been driving around for a while and would have had to stop and ask directions without it. (Also considering the price of gas these days it's nice to have something that will save you from wasting it driving around in circles)
One of the things I really like about it is that it will tell you your estimated time of arrival from where you are. A nice touch if you want to figure out how long it will take to get to a destination. (Great for making sure you're not late to a first date, or job interview).
It comes with a lighter plug so you'll never run out of juice on the road (A note, I find that the unit will work for about 60 mins before needing to be recharged or plugged into the lighter socket). You can also plug it into the USB port on your computer at home for recharging the battery.
I also hook it up to my Mac once a week and download map changes to keep it updated. That service is free for the first year I believe.
All in all, for the money you really can't ask for more. This is a simple yet effective GPS unit that anybody (even my Mom!) can use and enjoy! Go out and buy one now!
T
I got right to my destination. Much of the time it just sits on the shelf, but when I need it, I can count on it to get me there. One thing I really like is if I go off my planned route, the GPS will redirect me back on track. I can program it ahead and turn it on when I leave. One time I turned it on and the battery was dead, so I plugged it into the car cigarette lighter and it worked fine. It tells what time you should arrive at your destination and readjusts the time if you stop or are held up in traffic. I've only had one problem with it. At the end of a trip I turned it off about 5 miles from home because we didn't go right home. Next time I used it, it repeatedly wanted to finish that trip. Somehow I managed to clear it, after much time and effort. I thought I would have to drive back to where we shut it off and finish the trip. So now I just leave it on until I get home. I'm glad I bought it because sometimes you just have to be somewhere on time, or in my case you just have to get somewhere without driving through 5 states.
I bought this product for replacement when i bought a new vehicle, my other vehicle had a built in navigation. the thing i am most dissapointed about is that they advertise that the current traffic problems and gas station prices will be viewable. however they fail to mention that this requires an additional peice of equipment that cost over 150 dollars. as for the navigation itself it is great. has a few bugs, but is better than any other GPS i have dealt with. it is very user freindly and easy to understand. would reccomend to someone with basic navigational needs like myself.
I bought this specifically to help me find my way around Portland and Seattle so I wouldn't miss my cruise to Alaska. This made things SO much easier than trying to read printed map directions while in traffic. Even found myself talking to it...lol

Tom Tom One 3rd edition review
Great unit especially for the price. It's accurate about 95% of the time, but occasionally will lead you through stoplights when there is a faster way to get there. It occasionally will give non-sensical directions like take a left when driving down the interstate.
You can update over the USB port and download other voices. I've got the crocodile hunter up now, and it's entertaining to hear some of the comments that he makes.
I used it about anywhere I go now. I even take it with me in different cities when I've parked my car. Can set that location in memory, and the unit will direct you back to your car at the end of the evening.
Best money I've spent for a gadget in a long time!

Estimated arrival times WAY off!!!
I really enjoyed my Garmin GPS for the estimated arrival times when driving to visit family etc. This GPS has TERRIBLE estimated arrival times. Sometimes estimating over 45 minutes longer than it should take for only a 2 hour drive. ANNOYING!!! Also tha packaging is a beast to open, and now if I return it to Amazon I will be charged a restocking fee! Buy from a place you can easily return it if you are not 100% certain you want this GPS. Also mapshare is only free for a year. And the maps are only upgraded for free for the first 30 days after purchase. Very misleading. I am disappointed and will be going back to Garmin.

affordable but nice
I got the Tom Tom One 3rd addition two months ago after seeing it was recommended in Consumer Reports. I have used it on several small trips around the state and just recently returned from a 2000 mile trip to NY. It was invaluable on that trip because I was towing a trailer, much of the time in city traffic. It was really nice to have directions about which lane to be in and which way I was to turn with advance warning so I wasn't having to swerve across four lanes of traffic at the last minute. I paid about $140 and have really gotten my money's worth. I lent it to my Mom for a trip to Florida and she was thrilled with it as well. I would like to use a high-end model just to see if the $400-600 price would warrant the difference. In either case I think it would help anyone living in a new area, anyone doing sales or service calls, traveling for business, and those who just appreciate the added piece-of-mind when traveling and never being lost at an Exxon writing directions down on a napkin.
Product is a great tool for traveling.Especially in a unfamiliar area ,was able to find restaurants ,gas stations without a problem
I was unsure of this product, as my parents had purchased a different navigator and spent close to 600 dollars. This one cost me about 140 altogether. I actually like mine better!! Some of the voices are very "computerized" but a few are not, and that is much more pleasant. The screen is easy to use and entering destination addresses is equally easy. I would reccommend this to anyone who needs navigational help with work, or just likes to hit the road to new destinations. The mounting apparatus was extremely easy and very durable. I put it on the dashboard as opposed to the windshield.

Would send it back if I could.
I purchased this product about a month ago and have found it to be frustratingly disappointing. I've found that I lose signal A LOT and a few times it has been when I am approaching a turn and am not sure what the next step is... I drive in the city a lot and get absolutely no signal when I am near tall buildings so its useless there. The routes that it recommends are not always the best ones (I've tested it on local trips to see where it would take me) - and its driven me down a dead-end street more than once now. I've had experiences using more expensive models in friends cars (Magellan Maestro to be exact) and the "service" provided was just better. This model does NOT offer the spoken street name feature is a HUGE drawback, it just makes using it more difficult when you are driving, especially in fast moving traffic.
This is one case where I would say to spend the money on a better model or different brand. I am sorry that I went the bargain route here. I chose this one b/c it was a Consumer Reports Best Buy, I'm not sure what they were thinking.

I got mine right after New Year's 2008 and it worked great for a while, but suddenly last month I started having big problems with the downloaded updates. Now everytime I TRY to download updates I get error messages and it craps out! The error reporting systems sucks too! Its anonymous, so there is no real help to be had! Just like a throwback to the old 486 computers when you try to install anything. I now cant even seem to use it at all! Do yourself a favor and go for a Garmin! Very much worth the price.
This GPS is very much worth the price. It is probably the best GPS available for under $175 and I am VERY satisfied with the product after using it for about three months now.
Why only four stars? Because this GPS does NOT read street names out loud. This means that instead of saying: "Turn left at Elm Street in 200 yards," it will say: "Turn left in 200 yards." Most GPS systems that read street names out loud cost over $200. TomTom does make GPS systems that can read street names out loud but they cost significantly more than this one. While this particular model does NOT read street names out loud, you can look at the screen to see the street name. While spoken street names certainly makes navigation easier, I have not found the lack of this feature to be too much of a problem (and I have been navigating completely new territory having just moved to a new state.).
Other than the lack of spoken street names, I have nothing but praise for this device. It works great. The user interface is an extremely easy and intuitive touch screen menu. You can save favorite destinations, it automatically saves recent destinations, it calculates routes quickly, and you can change the voice. There are several cool voices available including a hilarious Austin Powers voice.
All in all, I would highly recommend this GPS model because you simply won't find a better one for the price (believe me, I searched extensively). If you absolutely need spoken street names, then this is not the model for you and unfortunately, you'll have to spend a bit more money.

Stay FAR FAR AWAY from this
TomTom ONE 3rd Edition 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Vehicle Navigator
I've had a TomTom ONE 2nd Edition for a bit over a year. Have used it extensively on the West Coast and a bit in Florida and New England. It has recent but not the very latest maps.
In short, it's a disaster. I've used it to navigate to popular tourist destinations in Florida (the Everglades) and Oregon and to many other destinations. The only reliable navigation I get is going to a built-in POI. When I enter addresses (for buildings that have been in their location for 15-100 years), TomTom misses by 0.1 mile to as much as 2.6 miles! Once it sent me ("fastest route") over rough gravel forest roads, ultimately ending in a closed road that forced me to retrace my track for 10 miles.
The routing engine seems to have problems as well. It will go out of its way (that's my gas and time) to avoid some left turns. It also doesn't consistently know when [old] center dividers prevent turns (wasting more of my gas and time). Also, the unit is off by a factor of 1.5-2x when estimating trip times greater than 15-30 minutes. It's as though the unit assumes you always travel at exactly 30mph, even on interstate highways and freeways. Miserable for planning trips.
TomTom support offered a solution: Take a chance and buy some new maps...
Best way I've found to navigate with TomTom ONE: Go to Google Maps and get a map, then use TomTom to get you close and finish up with your handy Google map. Once you're at the destination, you can create a Favorite by marking your current location, and TomTom will navigate there reliably from then on.
On the good side, I like its graphics and the fact that I can create my own POI categories. This is something important that I wish Garmin offered in their Nuvi. Also, satellite acquisition is very fast and route recalculations are acceptably fast.
My TomTom also requires hard reset every several times it's used. TomTom's support had a good solution for me: buy a new TomTom.
I'm sort of taking their advice: am buying a new unit, but it's going to be a Nuvi... I'd recommend the same for anyone considering a TomTom ONE.

Highly configurable GPS
If you're a bit of a computer geek, you can do a lot of easy customizations to the pictures, voices, and distinations. The screen is also comfortable to view. The one minor problem with this unit is that it can take a couple of minutes to achieve a satellite signal, which is rather annoying, otherwise everything works well.
PRO's
- If you are travelling in new territory, or need to plot your way around town for yard sales on saturday morning, this device can be useful! I loved it for driving around Toronto, Chicago etc.
- It is a nice size, the voice is loud enough, and it finds satilites and routes quickly.
CON's
- The rural Canadian maps are pathetic! 25% of the time the arrow representing my car is in some forest or field, and the unit is trying to figure out how to get me back on the rural Hwy that I am already on.
- TomTom need to improve the software for sharing map updates. There should be a mode where I (and others) record where we drive so they can fix the coordinates on maps.
- I should also be able to add a street by pressing a button and driving down it! I would love to hand my TomTom to a friend so they can use it to find our cottage, but since the road does not exist, I am out of luck.

Terrible Customer Service
I have the TomTom130. Since Day 1, the unit has been malfunctioning (failure to turn on, lost satellites, incorrect directions, etc.)
TomTom supports a 14-day warranty ONLY on this $200 electronic item. When I contacted them, they basically told me "tough luck". I would switch to a manufacturer that produces a higher quality product with a stronger warranty.

Decent portable device
I am pleased with this device so far. It's my first adventure into GPS units. I moved to Boston and realized why GPS devices were invented, so I grabbed one quickly. I think the TomTom ONE is a good deal for the price. Having true "text-to-speech" (by which I mean having road names voiced aloud) would be the extra feature I would wish for this device. Otherwise it holds its own.
For any Linux users, I tried the HOME software with WINE, which installs, but the device isn't recognized as anything but Mass Storage Device. So you can't use all the fun features provided by the HOME software.

Do not do business with this company
Do not do business with this company. I just bought this product and have had nothing but trouble with map updates and their technical support department. Their solution to everything is try and sell you upgrades and then you discover you have to purchase hardware updates to use the upgrades. They are the most disreputable company I have ever dealt with and have a total lack of customer service mentality. Be warned that these units come with very outdated maps.
