[+] 10.0 great music

This is a great cd with lots of familiar disco tunes. I am using it for exercise and the "beat" is perfect. It also brought back memories of the disco balls and dances. If you buy it, you won't be disappointed.

[+] 10.0 Wanna throw a 70's Disco Party???
Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive, "YMCA" by the Village People, ABBA's "Dancing Queen," Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff" AND "I Feel Love," "You're the First, My Last, My Everything" by Barry White, "I Love the Nightlife" by Alicia Bridges, "Don't Leave Me This Way" by Thelma Houston, "If I Can't Have You" by Yvonne Elliman," and "That's the Way I Like it" by K.C. and the Sunshine Band???

There you have it. These 10 alone are worth the purchase of this seminal compilation. With the addition of the eleven remaining hits by the likes of Diana Ross, Teena Marie, Marvin Gaye, and others, "Pure Disco" is like a WOW collection of the era.

[+] 10.0 boogie on down TONIGHT !!!
Pure Disco has twenty-one great tracks on it that anyone from the days of disco will remember fondly! This is the music people heard in the clubs as they danced their cares away on many a Saturday night. The music on this CD is excellent; and the quality of the sound is also very good. The artwork is great!

The Village People start things off big with their smash disco hit entitled "Y.M.C.A." "Y.M.C.A." has an awesome beat and it just might even make your kids want to dance to it! "Y.M.C.A." is classic disco and a great choice to start off this album. Abba's "Dancing Queen" is yet another great number from the golden days of disco; it may have a somewhat slower beat than other songs do but it still is great dancing music. "Hot Stuff" by Donna Summer is also classic disco, Donna Summer made many contributions to the disco archives and we're all better off for her doing that! Listen also for Gloria Gaynor doing her awesome hit, "I Will Survive." "I Will Survive" had many, many people out there on the dance floor and this is sure to bring back great memories!

Barry White's "You're The First, The Last, My Everything" is one of the most joyful, triumphant songs I've ever heard; and "Knock On Wood" by Ami Stewart sure does have that disco beat! I love it! The percussion and musical special effects mark the beat for "Knock On Wood" and Ami Stewart sings this like a champ! There's also "That's The Way (I Like It)" by K.C. & The Sunshine Band; K.C. & The Sunshine Band made some VERY good music and quite a few people were really surprised when "K.C." turned out to be a white guy with long hair down his back! I always like hearing K.C. & The Sunshine Band sing and play their awesome tunes.

"Oops Upside Your Head (I Don't Believe You Want To Get Up And Dance)" by The Gap Band is disco; but if you listen carefully you just hear the very early beat of hip-hop music coming around the corner. Interesting! The beat is very good and "Oops Upside Your Head (I Don't Believe You Want To Get Up And Dance)" is good disco dance music even today. "Love Hangover" by Diana Ross had many people up and out onto a steamy dance floor--this is a great song and Diana Ross does this with all her heart and soul; she really delves into this song to turn out a terrific performance! The song has an unforgettable melody with a beat that makes you want to jump up and start dancing nearly wherever you are.

"Funkytown" by Lipps, Inc. scored a huge hit in the disco clubs; and the mix of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" is still perfect for dancing the night away! The CD ends strong with John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John doing "The Grease Megamix." "The Grease Megamix" ends things on a very upbeat note (no pun intended) and that's fantastic.

Pure Disco is great disco music; and it makes an excellent starter CD for people who want a strong single CD sampler of this type of music. Diehard fans may well already have most of these numbers in their disco box set collections already; but if they don't have these songs they should get this album.

[+] 2.0 Oh look at this! The wannabe goes to the disco!
That's right. The wannabe from the 1960's known as Diana Ross goes to the disco, and yes, she tries singing again, but she was, and is no legend. Everyone today knows her as a wannabe who has no clue about how she should be a diva. The song "Love Hangover" is one of the worst songs ever recorded.

Now to this album. This album is for people who live in the past, and who don't have much of a life. Songs like "YMCA" are the worst examples of music history. If you have a life, then I suggest you avoid this, and get the music from the WWE. There is more talent than what is on this disc. Even Donna Summer doesn't deserve any respect. Disco is dead. Accept it and move on!

Go to hell Diana Ross, unless you have the guts to face me like a real woman!

[+] 4.0 Pure Pop Culture..Cashing In On "Disco" Revival Of The 90s
This is more or less just another danceable pop hits of the mid - late 70s collection (with a few early 80s thrown in). Folks, lets be honest here...only maybe 2 or 3 tunes actually got heavy play in the actual clubs back when (which is the reason I even give this 2 stars). All these tunes are the same tunes for the most part that are on every other so called "disco" CD compilation. For one, "Grease" is FAR from anything disco or disco related (which im happy to see a few people actually noticed!).

Where's Cerrone "Supernature", Giorgio "From Here To Eternity", Alec R. Costandinos "Romeo & Juliet", Machine "There But For The Grace Of God Go I", Jumbo "Turn On To Love" and could go on and on (probably 90% of the folks reading this right now dont even know what those tunes I mentioned are).

Those tunes I mentioned are basic common club play disco from back when...im not even goin mega deep here, just mentioning a few of the REAL disco bilboard hit basics here. Sure, to promote the pop hits, most of these tunes on this comp were played in the corse of the night in 12" remixed format...but they were not the main attraction as pop culture believes!

If anyone is truely interested to hear what disco was really about and wants to get a small taste of the hard true disco sounds, if you can find it (since its out of print), look up the CD comps The Best Disco In Town vol 3 (whole CD) and The Best Disco In Town vol.2 (75% of this CD is true disco) put out by the now gone Hot Productions...there you'll get a small taste of the REAL disco hits from the 1976 - 1980 era which kept everyone dancin and havin fun (with a few early 80s ones thrown in). Forget this pop culture cash in on what the radio mainstream called disco (and if this is what disco really was, I wouldnt blame em one bit for the whole disco sucks movement...but this IS NOT REAL DISCO!).

Like I said, I DO give em credit for putting a few tracks on here that actually were REAL club hits and not on every pop comp (Gibson Brothers "Cuba" is the main one that stands out). But don't take my word for it, seek out the 2 comps I mentioned above and hear for yourself!

[+] 10.0 Get on up and Boogie!!!
Whether its 'pure disco' is debatable...but this is a first rate compilation of Classic Disco songs...every single one on this disc has 'outlived' the era just listen to Knock On Wood, Dont Leave Me This Way, Dancing Queen and of course I feel Love...fantastic compilation the first in the series.
Worthwhile.

[+] 10.0 Disco is NOT dead!
When I was in college disco was all the rage! Disco is timeless and when I hear those disco songs on the radio, normally on an oldie station, I just wanted to get up and dance. The problem was I only heard disco infrequently. This CD is the greatest! From the first song to the last, it will have you up and on your feet dancing. It will be music to your disco ears! The only song that I wish was on this cd is "Ring my Bell." This cd has most of the great disco dance songs that I love!

[+] 10.0 Awesome songs great to dance to!
This CD takes me right back to my high school days and relives the good times. There is something about the song selection that is so perfect for someone who grew up with these songs in high school when life was simple and fun, no worries and no bills to pay. The nostalga alone was worth it for me but then I found this to be a great CD for parties and others from all ages who like to dance and have a great time. The selections could not have been better! I have not bought the others in the series as well.

[+] 8.0 Nice beginning for the series, but #2 is better
The only reason this fails to pull down a 5 star rating is the fact that the compilers seem to have used "disco" to mean "music that has a good beat to dance to" as opposed to a particular style of dance music that was awash in strings typically that was at its most popular in the mid to late 1970s. Because of this, they include a few things that aren't really "disco" although they may prove good dancefloor fodder (Kool and the Gang's "Celebration" came out long after disco was dead...the Grease megamix has songs that sound closer in spirit to 50s rock and roll than disco...and the version of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" is remixed.

The other songs represented here are all the right timeframe and the right sound and very recognizable if you grew up when the battles between "disco ducks" and diehard rock 'n' rollers were being played out on the charts. During disco's day, these were some of the best songs to land there.

If you're getting started in the series, buy disc 2 first.

3 1/2 stars

[+] 10.0 disco's best cd
this cd is a genius mix of great disco songs. its hard not to like it. to understand why, just look at whats on it: celebration by kool & the gang (classic), funkytown by lipps inc, dancing queen by abba, ymca by the village people, and many more. i mean, who doesnt know YMCA? also on this cd are less popular songs, such as knock on wood and hot stuff, but they were still popular and you will most likely know them as soon as you listen to the cd. at the end is the awesome grease megamix that anyone who likes the movie grease will know all the words to. on the megamix are grease lightning, you better shape up, you're the one that i want, and summer nights. this cd is great for parties along with personal listening because once you turn it on, everyone will want to get up and dance. Pure disco is the best disco mix around.

[+] 8.0 What a great series!
Let me first go on record saying that my favorite artists of all time (at this point) are Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. In that vein, you wouldn't really expect a guy with a taste for that sort of music to dig disco. But I really do. Disco music defines "good times." If you've ever been to any sort of party in your life (hosted by a professional DJ, that is), the odds are you've heard a number of the songs on this compilation. And they're all great.

Some are better than others, of course, but each song is catchy and the bass lines are funky. Not to mention cheesy. If you're looking for a cool collection of disco music and don't want to splurge the cash for expensive box sets or individual artists' albums, the "Pure Disco" series is a great investment. Throw in the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack and you've got enough great disco songs to blister your feet up.

Why only four stars instead of five? That's easy. Barry White's "the First, the Last, My Everything" isn't the REAL version. Polygram omitted the spoken introduction and the phrasing is just a bit different from the original version. Must be some sort of radio edit.

Despite this, great compilation. Two other recommendations: "the Bee Gee's Greatest Hits: the Record" and "Barry White: the Ultimate Collection."
